taz graphic novel thoughts… I’m putting it under the cut because… spoilers silly.

Forewarning this really got away from me and is unfortunately pretty negative. read at your own risk

Huh, this really is an adaption? After the eleventh hour this is a really big let down tbh. Just so much was cut and it felt SO rushed. In the first 3 scenes we lose taako’s “because I’m afraid no one else will have me” and practically ALL of Magnus and the void fish swimming.

Obviously things need to be cut, it’s a completely different medium, but all the emotional payoff was ruined. I was never scared they were going to lose something great, I didn’t even cheer for them when they killed Edward. All the sacrifices are so minimized FOR GOD SAKES MAGNUS AND GOVERNOR KALIN WAS CUT. Are you kidding me? One of the most important sacrifices and emotional moments of TAZ.

With every cut there is a cut to later payoff, in the eleventh hour that was balanced well but here it just doesn't work. So much is cut out of tsg that as a reader there were no stakes to win or lose. I knew they would win because its their story but i didn't care what would happen to them.

So Wonderland was too short, why do I care? because the very heart of the suffering game was lost.

This is the thesis of the suffering game summed up best.

What did they learn in wonderland? How did they change? They don't really. Taako doesn't choose the mission over himself, Magnus doesn't give up his main purpose in life, Merle doesnt lose his faith.

We don't get to see them at their worst because there is no one in Wonderland who their actions effect. I always, ALWAYS tear up at Rowen's "why?" after they go through their round with the monster factory. This catalyses Taako into later choosing to sacrifice his beauty. With the stakes cut we lose the emotional payoff of later scenes.

The solution of the suffering game being too long was not to cut out all of the spinning. It needed a restructuring. Heart attack has every interesting character moment cut, its barely a drive by of the original scene, why not just cut the moment entirely? It doesn't say anything about the character's emotional insights and True sight could have easily been cast at another moment.

Some moments have been adapted beautifully but they ended up reminding me what is lacking. Arms outstretched has great pacing that I had come to expect from the team. But compare that to Magnus's sacrifice and its just... nonexistant.

There was a way to trim down suffering game to fit it and the reunion tour that didn't require cutting every interesting sacrifice.

Now the reunion tour... what a mess. they cut out our narrator to show our plane being cut off, but this section dearly needed some narrative guiding. So much running back and forth in time and locations to make it run smoother but again, they needed a whole restructuring. Which some parts got but for all the wrong reasons.

I was happy that they cut the whole act with Magnus being dead when they get back to the campus because it barely works in audio form. But instead the campus is cleared because of the storm but then its packed for one panel when Carey and Killian cancel their side mission? why have the side mission at all? I'm assuming to drive Carey's and Magnus's friendship but it is a really clunky addition.

Everyone drinking the voidfish ichor separately is visually and narratively frustrating. It happens on a smaller scale in the show but by this point griffin has taken the reins back of the narrative and guides us through it seamlessly.

Griffin's final narration, has been separated and mutilated for what? it barely exists at all. its been replaced with an odd speech from Lucretia being happy about their return.

Its such a confusing moment to end on when you could have had idk THE ORIGINAL BELOVED ENDING?

"And from those pillars, the Hunger’s armies have begun to manifest, marching outward to raze the world below. It’s the end of the world. Again."

Tldr: bruh just read it, but seriously idk the changes made are clunky and dont make sense. and all the moments that are cut ruin the pacing of the rest of the book. It's especially confusing as this is probably one of the most straightforward arcs since petals to the metal and it is the most confusing adaption.

the fun thing about taako is he has very little in the ways of canon physical appearance other than "in-universe, he is seen as extremely beautiful" so you can give him whatever features you want and implicitly celebrate those features as beautiful

on the one hand i knew from the get go that realistically they were going to have to cut things from both the suffering game and lunar interludes IV and V if they were going to attempt to fit all three into one graphic novel, especially since reunion tour was a two parter

but, with all of that in mind, i did not think those cuts would include pivotal character developing moments for multiple main and side characters, so many fan favorite lines that at some point i gave up keeping track, key pieces of foreshadowing and themes that come into play during the finale, and literally every side character introduced in the original arc are you fucking kidding me

I expected Zoro to be sillier. I must say that the jokes he makes are good and I did laugh at those but when he got serious he probably got TOO serious and he was giving post-ts instead of pre-ts (if that makes any sense)???? Idk. Both Zoro and Nami deserved to be sillier.

I made the mistake of going on The Adventure Zone subreddit to see what people's thoughts were on TAZ Vs. Dracula episode 1 (I just started listening to the season).

Not only is it an overwhelmingly negative and complaint driven community, but the needless hate towards Travis McElroy is just astounding. Like I get that some people are sore at him over how he handled TAZ: Graduation, and that's fair, but it's turned into this culture of the guy being everyone's villain all the time. Makes it basically impossible to engage with the TAZ fandom at all outside of the fan art and similar.

And like. Dude what the fuck are you talking about?? I could go on and on about how each of these characters is so quirky and characterful and has so much going on that distinguishes them from one another (to varying degrees, obviously) but just on the face of it this is such a needlessly hyper-negative reading of the podcast, it bothered me so much and I needed to complain. Like calling Lup “Taako 2.0”?? Bro who pissed in your Cheerios?

Thank you for making great posts about opla sanji. There isn’t much enthusiasm for opla online, especially Twitter/x. And it kind of gets disheartening to see some of the hate. So it’s really nice to see people genuinely talk about opla. My favorite character has always been Sanji. But some Sanji fans, on Twitter/x mostly, have been a little embarrassing and irritating with their negative posts. I’m glad that there are some Sanji fans, like you, out there that are a lot more appreciative and understanding, especially towards opla sanji since I also love Taz’s portrayal of Sanji. I need to follow more people who are fans of both og sanji and opla sanji. The way Taz portrayed Sanji has always been the version of Sanji I have always had in my head when I was first introduced to him in the manga and up until now. I don’t personally take his gags seriously, because they are literally just gags and I mostly blame Oda for his weird type of humor lol. But yeah it was such delight to see the version of who I think Sanji is come to life with Taz’s portrayal in opla. Fingers crossed that the writers know how to write his character in future seasons and consider his origins more because Sanji is one of the most complex characters in the manga and I would really love/look forward to seeing opla respect it and do it justice.

and thank you for listening! opla was my introduction to one piece, i watched it with zero knowledge of the anime or manga and so taz’s version of sanji was the first version of the character that i ever watched and what made me absolutely fall in love with him as a character and all his versions. i have so much love for opla in general but sanji in particular and the fact that you enjoying reading my thoughts on him as much as i enjoy talking about him means a lot, genuinely. i love animanga sanji so much because of opla sanji and how much i love him. he has my heart always

twitter is a cesspool at the best of times but op twitter in particular sucks, especially when it comes to opla and i very quickly learned that it is not the platform to talk about it. people are nasty and i genuinely just mute or block most people who i see hating on it for no reason because i don’t want to interact with people who i feel like would be rude to me simply because i’m a fan of it and the anime/manga (because to some people that’s an impossible concept) but even then i don’t talk about it over there because it’s not worth it, considering how many people hate it and will not hesitate to let you know. that’s what i love about being here on tumblr (and tiktok, where i post opla edits). i can ramble about opla to my hearts content without losers in my ear moaning about how bad they think it is like i asked.

as for season 2 and beyond when it comes to sanji i have complete faith in taz who you can tell both loves and gets the character and the writers, if season 1 and how he was handled is anything to go by (i have a post i keep meaning to get back to which is just me talking about opla baratie and the choices made which i’ll get to eventually). i just absolutely adore him and am so excited to see where his character goes

Taz Skylar as a Father:

How you found out you were pregnant: Ever since y/n and Taz got married, the two had been trying to start a family for a while. The two were both so excited about the possibility of becoming parents. One morning, when y/n woke up she went to the bathroom with a pregnancy test, just like every other morning for the past month. When she took it she expected it to be negative, just like every other one, but to her surprise it was positive! After a while of silent celebrating in the bathroom, she went into their bedroom to wake Taz up to tell him the good news. Taz was also excited. He smiled, hugged her, and told her how much he loved her. They spent the rest of the day talking about their future as parents and making plans for the baby. Y/n felt so lucky to have such a supportive husband who was always there for her.

During the pregnancy: Y/n was going through all the normal pregnancy symptoms, like morning sickness and a growing belly, and Taz was always there to take care of her. He would make sure she always had her favorite snacks, rub her feet when they started to hurt, and even take over all of her household chores. As the months went on, Y/n's belly was growing bigger and bigger. Taz was so proud of his wife, and he could barely wait to meet their little one. He started preparing the nursery and researching all the things Y/n would need once the baby arrived. He was determined to be the best father he could be. As the due date approached, Taz became more and more protective of his wife. He would make sure she always had everything she needed, and he would never leave her side for too long. Y/n appreciated his care and attention and knew that she was in good hands with Taz.

The due day: Y/n and Taz were ready to become parents. The due date was fast approaching, and they were both nervous but excited. Taz had prepared everything, from the nursery to all the essentials that they would need. Finally, the big day arrived. Taz took Y/n to the hospital, and they both breathed a sigh of relief as they got into the elevator. Once they reached the delivery room, the doctors and nurses immediately got to work. Y/N was feeling a little pain, but Taz was there to hold her hand and comfort her. As the hours went by, Y/n's contractions became more regular and intense. Taz was by her side, holding her hand and encouraging her. When it was finally time to push, Taz rubbed her back and helped her breathe. When the baby was born, it was a beautiful moment for both Y/n and Taz. They both couldn't stop smiling and looking at their little one. Y/n cried tears of happiness, and Taz was so proud of his wife. Taz was there for Y/n during every step of her labor, and he continued to be there for her and the baby.

How he is as a father: Taz is a loving and supportive father to his child. He spends time with them, reading stories and playing games, and is always there to comfort them when they are upset or scared. He helps them with their homework and drives them to their activities. He is a hands-on dad who is always looking for ways to make life better for his family. Taz is also a patient and understanding father. He listens to his child and tries to understand their point of view. He never yells or punishes them without first talking through the situation. He wants his child to feel safe and valued, and to know that he is there for them no matter what.
