weirdest casualty of long Covid (besides. yk. the Incurable Disability) is in terms of linguistic processing I can truly no longer talk or sing as fast as I used to
not that I was super fast before, but one of the days I was sickest, words actually stopped... meaning anything? like I was at work, I was hitting my DT script, but was pushing through on pure muscle memory phonetically. I could process what I was hearing or reading just fine, but could not talk outside of this heavily repetitive workplace script, which is actually very dystopian now that I think about it. virus hitting the brain means I'm a zombie that can't speak except to say, "HIII :) whatcanIgetstartedferyouthismorning?"
anyway, thought it was just fatigue, but went to my car on my break, watched a trending video of people trying to rap along to Fergalicious at double speed. I could LIP SYNC to it just fine. I tested my theory. but I could NOT get my mouth and voice to work at the same time to actually sing/rap it. even now, tbh, I have to make myself NOT think about it while rapping it to get the words to flow out or I get stuck. like it's truly something in the brain for where you process speech, but not where you process just lyrical phonics like music. I have to consciously make a REAL effort to turn off the "word" part of my brain to be fast again.
I speak perfectly legibly, I can genuinely get up to decently fast normal talking speeds, just not Northeastern fast-fast. but it comes up in music a surprising amount, and it's kind of annoying to have lost as a skill.
#I honestly attribute some parts of my recovery to truly obnoxious vocal training...#like I HATE having blocked sinuses so I have a technique to basically forcibly drain them w face massage + finding the right notes to sing#that will resonate just enough to open up the back of those mfs and slide everything out#I am also a good one for hitting enunciation exercises as a stim#so shifting to Phonetic Mode in the brain was like... VERY NOTICED but it felt like the Princess Bride left handed duel scene#just switching swords to an equally equipped hand#I also read out loud to myself fairly often now just to re-sharpen the Linguistic side... stuff you'd do for reading & language mastery yk?#idk if I'll ever get the speed back fully except maybe phonetically again but fuck it we move#health

Stimming is when you smell. Chew. Listen to music. Whistle. Every form of embodied semiosis that’s not necessarily linguistic and/communicatively “functional”. Thank god there is a word for it.

hey! before I begin, I wanted to say how much I love your comics!! the style and palettes are really soothing, and it's always nice to read them, relate heavily, and not feel quite such an oddball!! so thanks :]
I (very recently) received the results of my diagnosis for autism and adhd (I got both, and a couple other smaller things) and was wondering what things you did differently immediately after diagnosis that helped you? I've tried things like proper organisation and cleaning, keeping on top of deadlines for college as much as I am able, and trying to study as much as I can (a levels are very stressful even though I've only just started the course, and while these solutions are what's considered "good" by the college, its not really helping me as much as I would like)
a large part of the diagnosis was dedicated to brain function (I had the privelidge of being assessed privately, so the evidence was very detailed and thorough), and I scored stupidly high on vocabulary and language study. However, I feel like there's somewhat of a disconnect between the effort I've put in on my foreign language studies and the progress I'm seeing- I'm trying so so hard to understand grammatical concepts and absorb a lot of vocabulary in preparation for some smaller tests in the near future, but I'm not seeing the reward during lessons or even with preparation. I am fully aware that with all the work and effort I'm spending, I am closer than I would like to be to a meltdown and probably burnout, which I desperately want to avoid. It just feels that although my brain is wired for linguistic study, I feel like I'm falling behind or failing
I guess if you have any advice or anything that helped you once your diagnosis was confirmed, or tips for study, I would be greatly appreciative :]
Tldr: struggling with study and fearful of failure, any advice?
hnng I remember the stress of A levels, you couldn't pay me to go through that again 🫠
After being diagnosed I started to allow myself to unmask and stim in more obvious ways. Previously my stims had generally been pretty small, like flicking my fingers or wiggling a bit, but now I allow myself to flap and rock and play with fidget toys as well and it genuinely does help release tension.
It sounds like your're working really hard - if you feel close to burnout and/or meltdowns, you might be working too hard. I also found it really hard to take breaks when I was studying (...still do) but the truth is, by not allowing your mind to rest, you're actually making it harder for yourself to learn and retain information.
So my advice is, take a break! A real break, not 'I'm gonna scroll on my phone for a bit' or 'I went to the toilet that counts as a break right'. Get up, step away from your work for at least an hour, and do something you find relaxing and fun. Go for a walk or just sit outside. Make yourself a drink. Take a nap if you need to. Try to avoid looking at screens during your break if you can. And when you go back to studying, schedule times to have regular short breaks as well (eg a 10 minute break every hour). I set alarms for mine because otherwise I forget to move for five hours.
A break allows your brain to process the information and let it settle properly. When you go back to work you'll hopefully feel more refreshed and able to take in information again. Remember, if you've just started the course, then this is a marathon, not a sprint, so please try not to overdo it and burn yourself out right at the start. Conserve your energy for the long haul.
If you're still struggling, are you able to ask for help, maybe from a friend or a teacher? A teacher could give you some techniques on how to improve in the specific areas you find difficult, and sometimes just talking through the bit you're having trouble with or not understanding can help a lot.
Good luck with your studies and I hope you take some time to rest as well :)

i think some linguistic drift has happened with the word "stim" to include "motions i can't not make" and this has gotten kinda frustrating bc it coincides with a general awareness in the disabled blogosphere that stimming is also something autistics choose to do to self-regulate
so there'll be posts that include stuff abt what stims are acceptable vs what are breaking public boundaries, or like advice on how to choose stims that are acceptable around others, or stuff like that, but then simultaneously some things referred to as stims are involuntary and those things get seen as voluntary within disabled spaces and we reproduce a lot of ableist stuff wrt trying to control peoples bodies as a result?
like ive seen head-banging during meltdowns/overloads referred to as a self-injurious stim, frex, but thats definitely not a thing most autistics who do it can choose whether or not they're doing. on a smaller scale, like, i have a lot of involuntary movements due to bad brain-body wiring, and some of them will b things referred to as stims by other autistics (hand wringing, frex, or like, finger tapping, or my legs jerking/bouncing, or just like where im putting my fingers and how they move, idk how to describe it), and sometimes they will be done on someone elses body if we're cuddling or hugging or sitting next to each other, and thats not rlly controllable bc i cant control that im doing them to begin with (although ofc im happy to move to a different chair or the other side of the room or whatever if you ask).
(im aware that these are definitionally not tics bc ive been told by people who tic that tics are specifically not regulatory in nature, and cannot be used for self-regulation, whereas a lot of autistics have a more in-between experience of involuntary movements that still regulate our bodies, but we can't like, choose to do them when we're doing bad, and they also happen when we don't need regulation and they're not serving any purpose)
anyway im wondering if theres vocabulary for involuntary movements that might be self-regulatory in nature but can't be stopped or started at will like a stim can? bc i think we'd really benefit from using that more specific vocabulary.

with it officially being disability pride month, I wanna talk about my favorite disabled headcanon, which is for the one and only, my most beloved Poe Dameron. Buckle up, because this is a long post.
I actually have a few different disability headcanons, most of which hold up to canon/are extrapolated from canon, so we'll keep that in mind as we go through. I expect this to have about...four parts total. Let's go!
Hard of Hearing
I think a good case can be made that Poe is hard of hearing, with a few instances that could point to this fact, primarily the very beginning of the Rise of Skywalker. Even though Chewie is sitting right beside Poe, Poe does not understand what Chewie has said, because his head is turned (at no other point does Poe have any problem understanding Chewbacca, so we know it is not a linguistics issue)
It's only when he turns towards Chewie and Chewie repeats what he said that Poe understands what was said. There's also the frankly adorable moment in The Last Jedi that's extremely easy to miss, because it's a far away shot and we just barely catch what Poe says:
BB-8 is beeping so fast trying to catch Poe up that Poe has to request that he slow down so Poe can understand him. Other possible evidence of him being HoH (beyond the comical amount of explosions he's constantly caught in) is that there are several shots where we see Poe carefully watching the lips of the person he's speaking to as they're talking, as if that might help him keep up.
And (I don't have a gif of this lmao I'm not giffing him getting hurt) when Poe gets shot in tros, @/dameronalone pointed out it could be evidence he didn't hear the approaching stormtroopers when he turned to look the other way. @/hermitmoss has also pointed to his line at the start of tfa while being snarky at Kylo as further possible evidence, about how it's hard to understand Ren with the voice modulator.
Essential Hand Tremor
Another fact pointed out to me by @/hermitmoss (thanks Braigwen) is that when Poe goes to cover Leia's hand with his own in the Last Jedi, we see that his hand is shaking:
I later noticed that this isn't the only time that we see Poe do this, we see it again in the Rise of Skywalker, where he cannot keep his blaster steady as Rey approaches the serpent at all.
These are the only two circumstances I can find of his hands trembling in the movies, though, and we know from plenty of other scenes that Poe ordinarily can keep a blaster extremely steady:
Autism & ADHD
Okay this one I don't consider to be a headcanon, lmfao. I genuinely believe that Poe was intentionally coded as autistic/ADHD by Oscar Isaac.
Oscar playing/coding Poe as something that is never explicitly confirmed by Disney is far from new: Poe is coded as a bisexual (or pansexual) man, because that's how Oscar Isaac saw Poe and chose to play him, and even if we weren't gifted with it being made explicit, it's still there in his performance.
If you happen to be a fan of Oscar Isaac, or just a Marvel and Star Wars fan both, you'll know he starred in the Disney+ series Moon Knight last year as the Moon Knight system (Steven Grant, Marc Spector, and Jake Lockley).
Shortly after the first episode premiered, Oscar Isaac revealed in an interview that while trying to figure out who Steven was as a person, he came up with the idea that the system be on the Autism Spectrum, and approached Marvel to see if he could include it into his performances, and it was green-lit.
The Lunar system is the best intentional autistic representation I've ever seen, there are so many things they do that are so minor that I doubt most people would ever consider to include, but they are things that me and my friends do.
And there's an overlap in how Oscar plays the various autistic habits and traits of the Lunar system in how he portrays Poe. Most notably, Poe and Marc have extremely similar meltdowns:
There's plenty more overlap (Poe does the same anxious stim Steven does, of rubbing the inside of his index finger with his thumb) but there's so much there I'm not sure where all to begin. I have gone more in depth on the various autistic traits Poe shows throughout the films in this gifset here, though.
I'll go ahead and include some of the moments we see him stimming, that I have evidence of:
(he also does this same hand thing when he starts to leave BB-8 and promises to come back.)
We also see him fidgeting anxiously with his hands during the briefing in the last jedi:
Poe also has a habit of running his tongue along his bottom lip while he's stressed or thinking something through. Here's three examples from across the trilogy (there are plenty more):
We're leaning a little closer into ADHD territory now. I don't really know how to explain why I think Poe is ADHD, to be quite honest, besides the fact that he just radiates ADHD energy to me and I heavily relate. This is a man who cannot stay still, and frequently talks with his hands:
But there's also the fact that Poe oftentimes has a tendency to not be able to fully see the potential of negative outcomes to his decisions - he sees point a to point b, and sometimes becomes laser focused on that. It's something I understand perfectly, because it's hard for me to pull away from something I've already fully committed to doing, and it's even more difficult sometimes for me to truly understand what (and what kind of) consequences my actions will have.
Other evidence of him being extremely autistic (and adhd) is just....that he makes autistic expressions?
Like this...is an autistic expression, I've seen my best friend make this exact fucking face before, I don't know how else to explain it.
Misc Thoughts
Aside from the above, it's pretty much canon that Poe has anxiety and depression — at the very least, Poe Dameron: Free Fall by Alex Segura certainly does not shy away from the suggestion, and is one of the most implicit portrayals we have of it outside the films — it is a series of catastrophizing his circumstances that leads Poe to joining Zorii for a little while as a teenager, following a joyride that ended in a crash that Poe explicitly wishes he had not survived.
The movies themselves also points to Poe having PTSD, partially through the writing but mostly due to the nuanced and thoughtful performance Oscar Isaac gives as Poe (that goes....woefully underappreciated, seriously he adds so much depth to every single scene as Poe, including the thread of anxiety in Poe's voice when Rey mentions Ren's ship is over Kijimi, or constantly looking out to make sure they're not being followed in tros).
(Good expanded material follows through on this, such as Poe's reluctance to discuss anything about what happened aboard the Finalizer in the Poe Dameron: Flight Log, and becoming irate at the thought of having to. He's an extremely traumatized man, and he certainly doesn't deserve to be thrown out of an airlock jfc and he isn't as arrogant as the fascist regime he is fighting, tbh he's not arrogant at all).
Conclusion
I believe that sums up the majority of my Poe is disabled thoughts, or at least the ones that I think holds up very well within the canon framework. He's extremely disabled and - in the case of being neurodivergent - this is critical to understanding him as a character, especially considering his arc ends up being focused on interdependence.
I wish all fellow disabled folk a happy pride month, and I wish all very ableds a very "please do not be ableist on this post". You will be blocked otherwise.

meow is continuing to overtake the linguistic centers in my brain. it’s only a matter of time before I start punctuating my actual speech with meows like I’m a video game mascot. I’ve started unironically using “sad meow :(“ in my internal monologue.
I have to say, this is the best stim I’ve randomly developed so far
#i’m curious if this is gonna subside in a week or become a permanent fixture of my vocab#from my very own mouth#meow

I HAVE AUTISM, PERCEIVE ME /lh
HI i'm gonna talk about communication and my sensory profile and verbal stims because i'm bored and they're things i experience with my autism.
alternative communication
i used to use BSL to communicate when nonspeaking as a kid but now the people i'm around don't understand BSL i tend to use other ways to communication
gesturing and mouthing words instead of saying them aloud work too
i also like speaking in toki pona (if u haven't heard of it, it's a minimalist constructed language made by linguist sonja lang, made to be easy to learn with simple grammar and help you focus on smaller concepts as it has only 130 words! current hyperfix haha) because it helps me a lot - the words feel easier for me to process and use, and the short words (most are 2-4 letters long) are easy to say and spell out.
verbal stims
my verbal stims change frequently! i often use echolalia to stim, so i repeat phrases that i've heard before. tiktok sounds often plague me in this way lmao.
my current most frequent verbal stims are french words! 'bonjour', 'oui' and 'au revoir' are some of my favourites.
i also like making beeping, buzzing and clicking like a dolphin.
my verbal stims can be voluntary or involuntary
sensory profile for me, it depends on what sense, but i'll do a quick run down:
taste - sensory seeking (i like spice/intense flavours)
food texture - DUDE DON'T GIVE ME ANY SOFT TEXTURES PLS. i like crunchy foods. i don't like inconsistently textured foods, so i avoid fruit and vegetables bc the texture is always different! my safe foods are chicken (my favourite are tenders or nuggets) and bread (i like most types of bread, but prefer the ones with a crunchy outside)
temperature - i don't like hot things generally. i don't like hot drinks or really hot foods. i prefer cooler temperatures in my room and prefer being cold - i can't stand the heat, summer is my nemesis /srs
clothing - i like big jumpers a lot, dresses that are spinny and clothes that don't restrict my movement. things like blazers or jackets stress me out cause i can't move freely.
sight - VISUAL STIMS ONLINE ARE DOPE!!! i love kinetic sand too. i have very visceral reactions to online stimboards lmao. i don't like bright lights - the dark is wayyy better.
sound - generally sound avoidant/adverse, i don't like loud noises, and i wear my ear defenders or earphones at all times bc i can't handle noise, especially in public. i like certain sounds like woodpecker drilling but i have to be in the mood for it. music is an exception to my sound avoidance because i love it omg - i memorise song lyrics really easily, usually from one listen.
touch - depends on my mood tbh. don't touch me w/o permission or i will reflex elbow you in the stomach /lh

For context, my girlfriend uses he/it pronouns.
In august I was on holiday in poland and I texted my girlfriend, telling him about some polish guy who I had talked to. I compared his way of speaking english to Käärija's english. And my girlfriend said: Yeah makes sense, Finnish and Polish are both slavic languages so that's probably why.
I just stared at him (metaphorically, we were texting) and said: No, no way Finnish is a slavic language. It didn’t believe me, because they sound so similar so I did some research and learnt about the existence of uralic languages.
I immediately texted my girlfriend "told you so", but then I started to dig a bit deeper and I realised how cool uralic languages are (they are so silly and make absolutely no sense, I love them)
Then, the school year starts and we learn about language history. I realise that I just generally really like linguistics. Each time uralic languages are mentioned my arm flies up at an embarrassing speed and I start to stim because I'm so excited.
I decide that I want to write my VWA (Vorwissenschaftliche Arbeit (basically a scientific paper that is a big part of your final exams and that can be about any topic)) about uralic languages.
I haven't started writing my VWA yet but I'm also thinking about studying linguistics once I finishe school.
This silly green man single-handedly changed the direction of my academic future and I couldn't be happier about it.

Silly Headcanons abt Arthur
𓈈⠀⠀ 𝅄 ⠀᧔◍᧓ ⠀⠀ 𝅄 𓈈
I've been brainrotting abt this man in the past 9 months. (I'm so normal abt him.)
So I'll share some of my useless headcanon of him (if you don't agree, pls do not spread hate. This is just my personal view. If you don't agree, it's definitely fine)
1- He is allergic to tomatoes.
My bro is totally allergic to tomatoes. He can't eat them or come into contact with them.
Which is a shame, cuz Penny likes it.
2- Arthur is a little afraid of birds
Don't ask me why. But I can just FEEL that Arthur is a little bit scared of birds. This man is not afraid of spiders or lizards (His mother is terrified of these things. Every time one of these shows up in their apartment, he takes it out for her.), but put a canary near him and watch the real meaning of discomfort.
3- He is obsessed with curly hair.
He definitely thinks curly hair is beautiful. He would even ask to touch someone's hair. But he is very shy and is afraid of hurting the person.
The only hair he touches is his own and his mother's. They have the same curl. So it's not really a big difference. But I can feel that he thinks afro hair is beautiful.
4- He's bisexual, period.
He doesn't call himself bisexual, obviously. It's the 80s. And Arthur is afraid of sexuality in general. But something tells me, that Arthur likes both men and women. But he doesn't think it's right for him to like men, because that's not the example he has. Arthur is desperate for romance, and all he knows about it is from movies. And in movies at the time, only heterosexual couples were shown. So I think Arthur would feel dirty because of this.
HaHa's has male strippers, and I'd say he's caught himself looking at them from time to time. But he doesn't know if he envies them, wanting to be like them, attractive to women, or if he wants to touch them.
(he wants both.
5- Arthur has dyslexia.
Throughout the movie, we see that Arthur's handwriting is rubbish. And in Joker 2, it is simply proven by himself that he didn't go to high school. However. In the last year of elementary school, you should already be literate and able to write. Which is not the case with Arthur. He doesn't know how to write properly and his handwriting is poor.
People with dyslexia have a peculiar brain functioning for linguistic processing related to reading. Dyslexics have difficulty associating the graphic symbol, the letters, with the sound they represent, and organize them, mentally, in a temporal sequence.
And I think Arthur fits that perfectly.
6- Arthur has level 2 support ASD.
Arthur is (undiagnosed) autistic, and you can't prove me otherwise. (Im autistic myself, so dont come at me☠️✋🏼)
My bro doesn't recognize irony, he's naive, has hyperfocus, do stimming, and doesn't know how to fit in with society, he feels love in a different way, etc.
He is an autistic man with a hyper focus on comedy and Murray Franklin, period.
Anyways, hope u all enjoy!
