The sun cast a warm glow on the quiet suburban neighborhood, its golden rays painting the houses in shades of amber and illuminating the few flowers that lined the streets. It was a picturesque scene, a scene that Beatrice loved to see every time she woke up.

Their neighborhood was nice, it was calm and it had the obvious ‘american dream’ feeling to it. She found it strange to not hear music during the weekends or loud voices on the street, unlike the ones she heard while growing up.

As she sips her morning…cocoa, because she couldn’t have coffee, she takes a quick look on her phone to check the time, she’d visit her dad in a few minutes, she just had to wait for Rooster to go to work. She taps her nails on the porcelain cup, chewing her lower lip because she was worried, albeit she shouldn’t be. She knew what his job was about, she had these thoughts many,many times before, she mentally prepared many times before…so why was she scared?

Why was she nervous?

She hears his footsteps going down the stairs, turning her torso in time to see his broad frame appear on the threshold, one arm stretched as he adjusted his watch on his wrist, looking up only when he noticed Beatrice staring at him, “Gorgeous,” he whispers, “So this is where you’ve been.”

“Well,I was preparing breakfast.” she laughs softly, nodding to the fresh toasts, tapping her fingers on the porcelain cup, “And um…I couldn’t sleep that well, so…”

“Again?” she nods quietly, “Oh,baby…” he wastes no time in walking up to her and kissing her forehead, “It’s okay, do you think you can nap at the hospital?”

“I think so,I’ll ask um, Bri to take Nikki out for a bit so I can sleep.” she rubs her eyes, the movement preventing her from saying how she ‘wasn’t sleepy at all’ when in fact she was really sleepy, “I’m okay though,it could be much worse.” she shrugs weakly, giving him a small smile, “I…I just…you know, life is–”

He hates when she rambles because of her anxiety, because he knows her brain is confused and her heart is about to burst. He could see the slight tremble on her fingers from sleep deprivation, “How long were you up?”

“Hm?”

“How long?”

She parts her lips, looking at the side guiltily.”I don’t know, it was still dark when I woke up.”

Rooster's concern deepens as he observes Beatrice's fatigue and the toll it's taking on her, gently taking the mug from her hands to set it aside, his wife makes a confused noise but stops when his hand reaches out to gently cup her face, his touch warm and comforting. "You need to take care of yourself, Bea," he says softly, his voice filled with genuine worry. "I know it's hard, but you can't keep pushing yourself like this. Your well-being is important."

Beatrice leans into Rooster's touch, closing her eyes. She takes a shaky breath, her voice filled with a mix of exhaustion and determination. "I know," she admits, her eyes welling up with tears. "But I feel guilty when I rest, especially with everything that's going on. I want to be there for Dad, for Nikki, for you."

Rooster's gaze softens, his thumb gently wiping away a tear that escapes her eye. "Bea…”

“I know.I know.I shouldn’t feel guilty,” she groans, “I know it’s my self doubt and my fear of disappointment being louder than normal and taking control of me, but…I-I can’t help it. I’m worried about my dad,I’m…trying to handle how I’ll be when you leave, and-and like I am pregnant and I can’t have these thoughts.”

Rooster's heart aches as Beatrice blurts out those words, they appear heavier than normal. He pulls her into a tight embrace, propping his chin on the top of her head. "You're allowed to have these thoughts, Bea," he says gently, “You know that very well.”

Beatrice clings to Rooster, seeking comfort in his strong arms. She sniffles softly, her voice muffled against his chest. "I know, but it's hard not to let the fear consume me sometimes," she admits, her voice trembling. "I know you said I don’t burden you but sometimes I still get these flashbacks and I can’t help it.”

Rooster pulls back slightly, his hands cupping Beatrice's face, his eyes locked with hers. "Ah,I forgive you.” he chuckles and she joins him seconds after, her cheeks reddening “ We're a team, remember? That's what being a couple is all about. Or did you just think I was just marrying you because you have an amazing ass?”

Beatrice’s eyes widen and she sputters a laugh, playfully shoving his shoulder, “Shut up!”

Rooster grins, the familiar lightness returning to his expression as he enjoys Beatrice's laughter. He wraps his arms around her once again, pulling her close. "Mmmmmmmmake me.," he purrs to her ear, playfully biting the curve of her jawline, his voice filled with affection. "You can try, we both know how that will go.”

Beatrice's laughter subsides, and she looks up at Rooster, leaning back onto his chest, “Do we?”

“We do.” Rooster's smile softens, and he brushes his thumb gently across Beatrice's cheek. "We both know it can be…interesting." he says, his voice filled with tenderness, hearing her quiet ‘mhm’ "But hey, we’ll be alright, you know that.”

Beatrice nods, finding solace in Rooster's words and the warmth of his embrace. She takes a deep breath, allowing herself to relax in his arms. "Yeah, we'll be alright," she whispers, her voice filled with a mix of relief and gratitude, giggling when he smacks her cheek with a wet kiss before backing away to get his morning coffee. "So what’s going to happen today?" she asks with her arms crossed, “You uh, will talk to someone else about the deployment or…”

Rooster pours himself some coffee, blowing the steam before he takes a short sip, only answering her when he swallows, “Pretty much,I’ll also talk to new pilots,I need uh…a debrief, basically, since I’ll lead the whole thing.” he takes another sip of the warm beverage, allowing it to hit his stomach and heat him up from the inside, “And then we need to get ready to leave.”

“...right.” she quickly waves her hands when he looks back at her with worry in his eyes, “N-No, no it’s fine. I’m just,well I’ll just miss you…but I know you’ll be okay.” she smiles, waving her hands to break the tense atmosphere, “I swear I’ll be fine. I swear…do you think you’ll be able to call us?”

“I’d break the rules to do so.”

“Rooster.” she admonishes, but then smiles, “...you don’t have to break the rules to call us.”

“True,I don’t.” he laughs, “But even if I’m tired,I’d still call you.” he leans his lower back against the counter, holding himself upright with his hands so he could keep his eyes on her, “But I’d love to hear from you when I’m away…helps me sleep.”

“Mhm.”

“What about you?” he questions, tilting his head, “What are your plans today besides visiting your dad?”

“I think…those are the plans I’ll have.” she whispers, shrugging at him,”Then I’ll come back home and enjoy the night off…I appreciate Penny letting me stay home.She’s an amazing boss.” she smiles as she drinks more of her cocoa, “Maybe I’ll…take Nikki to the park,I don’t know.”

Rooster's eyes soften as he listens to Beatrice's plans for the day. He walks over to her, setting his coffee aside and taking her hand in his. "That sounds like a good plan," he says, his voice gentle. "Spending time with your dad and taking Nikki to the park will be wonderful. And don't forget to take care of yourself too, okay?"

Beatrice nods, intertwining her fingers with Rooster's. "I will," she assures him, her voice filled with determination. "I'll make sure to rest when I need to and take care of our little ones." She looks down at her belly, a loving smile on her face. "They're counting on me, after all."

Rooster's gaze shifts to Beatrice's belly, “So am I,gorgeous.” he says sweetly, then looks at his watch with a groan, “I gotta go.” his lips meet hers in a gentle kiss "I love you," he whispers, “Walk me to the door?"

Beatrice’s cheeks hurt from smiling, “Of course.” she does check on Nicole via the video app and she’s happy to see their little girl is still asleep, “I’ll give you a call,alright?” she tells him once they walk to the garage, her arms crossing over her bust to protect her front from the chilly winds, “Oohh it’s cold today.”

“A little.”

“You do know what cold is,Virginia Boy.”

Rooster laughs, he’s honestly so happy to see her joking and laughing, it was a nice break from the tense atmosphere from these past days. He watches as the garage door slowly rolls up and he drops his shades over his eyes, “I do.” he smirks, “But I also know how to warm my wife up if she so desires.”

“Stop.” she’s blushing,trying to hide her smile with her hand, “Go to work.”

“One more kiss and then I’ll go.” he smirks,pursing his lips, “I’m waitin’.”

Beatrice playfully rolls her eyes, but she can't deny the warmth that spreads through her at Rooster's words. She steps closer to him, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Alright, just one more," she teases, leaning in to press her lips against his, cupping his cheeks so their lips would meet.

Rooster deepens the kiss for a moment, savoring the connection before reluctantly pulling away, his lips curving into a satisfied smile. "Alright, now I really have to go," he says, sliding his lower lip into his mouth, almost savoring her taste one more time, “I love you.” He gives her a quick wink before turning to head towards the Bronco.

“I love you too.” Beatrice watches him go, a soft smile on her face. She wraps her arms around herself, shivering slightly in the cold, but her heart feels warm. She knows it won't be easy to say goodbye, but she takes comfort that she’ll still have a few hours with him before he leaves for real.

As Rooster gets into his truck, he rolls down the window and leans over, his eyes fixed on Beatrice. "Take care of yourself, Bea," he says, “And sleep a little too,gorgeous.”

"I will," Beatrice replies,”Take care of yourself too, handsome. I’ll be waiting for you."

Rooster nods, his eyes lingering on Beatrice for a moment longer before he starts the engine. "I will," he promises, giving her a two finger salute that turned into a wave, he drives away, leaving Beatrice standing in the chilly morning air, watching him go.

Beatrice takes a deep breath, her hand gently resting on her belly as she walks towards the sidewalk. She should’ve grabbed a jacket or one of her cardigans, because that wind made her regret walking out immediately. She turns back around in a hurry, meeting Jolene’s huge head peeking out of the door, “Inside Jojo! It’s too cold!”

The pitbull however waits for the brunette to close the garage and finally walk into the warm comfort of their home. Beatrice sighed, leaning her back against the door and slowly sliding to the floor, bringing her knees up to prop her arms on it, and then cup her face in her hands as she stares ahead.

She was okay.

Sort of.

As Beatrice sits on the floor, Jolene taps closer, flopping next to her with her head on her lap and those honey colored eyes giving her the biggest and cutest puppy dog eyes ever, “...thanks Jojo.” she smiles, her body begging to rest but she couldn’t. Hell she might call Michael to pick her up, she couldn’t drive. Her head feels so heavy. “...I’m scared,Jojo.” she whispers to the dog, scratching her behind the ears “...I…I am scared,” and the tears pool on the corners of her eyes, “I didn’t want him to go.”.

Jolene whines, still looking up at her human only to see Beatrice wiping her eyes with her fingertips, “Augh,I hate-” she sniffles, wiping her face with her sleeping shirt, “The hormones. I’ve been crying so much these past days.” with good reason, a voice in her head replies, “God I just…I…I don’t know if it’s my dad’s hospitalization plus Rooster’s deployment, but something feels so off.”

Jolene senses Beatrice's distress and presses herself closer, offering comfort in her own way. The pitbull's warm presence brings a small measure of solace to Beatrice as she continues to wrestle with her emotions. Tears stream down her face as she blows an angry raspberry out of frustration with…everything.

But after a while Beatrice takes a deep, shuddering breath, trying to steady herself. She knows she can't let her fears consume her completely. She reminds herself that it's normal to feel scared and overwhelmed in the face of such significant challenges, repeating it to herself over and over because she knows it’s true.Everything going on is undoubtedly taking a toll on her emotional well-being.

Resting her head against the door, Beatrice lets out a shaky sigh. "I just...I wish things were different," she whispers, her voice filled with longing. "I wish my dad didn't have to go through this, and I wish Rooster didn't have to leave." Her words hang in the air, her own voice coming back to her ears.

Jolene nudged Beatrice's hand with her snout, so it landed on top of her head and so Jolene could protect the growing bump with her massive frame. Beatrice takes comfort in the pittie’s presence, laughing tiredly, “I’m sorry Jojo…I’m a broken record sometimes.” she says, chewing the inside of her cheek as she looks back to the sink, where both of their mugs were. Hers was still steaming, “...you know,maybe I should take on a new hobby with Rooster gone,maybe it’ll help me.”

Jolene stays close to Beatrice, the little dot brows moving with interest at her owner’s suggestion. “I don’t know…anything.Really,anything...to make this whole thing stop.” she gestures to her head and then covers her eyes with her hands, “...nevermind,I need to call Mike so he can pick me up.” she gently moves Jolene’s head away, not before kissing the pittie’s snout in thanks, “So I can sleep in the hospital, for a little bit.”

Jolene reluctantly moves her head away,standing up only to stretch her whole body as Beatrice walks upstairs to make the call. She does stop by Nicole’s door when she sees Eleanor and Jack up, their tails wagging and noses pointed to the crib, where a sleepy looking Nicole sat, squinting her eyes at nothing.

Beatrice smiles softly as she watches Eleanor and Jack, eagerly gathered around Nicole's crib. She walks over to them, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten as she takes in the adorable scene. "Hey there, little sleepyhead," Beatrice coos, reaching down to gently scoop up Nicole in her arms. "Did you have a good nap?"

Nicole blinks up at Beatrice, her tiny hand reaching out to grab onto one of Beatrice's fingers only to change target and move towards her eyes, rubbing her face instead. Beatrice's heart swells with love as she gazes down at her daughter, fixing the little onesie collar around her neck. "You're growing so fast," she whispers, pressing a gentle kiss to Nicole's forehead.

A sudden weird and dark thought shows up in her brain, making Beatrice still as if she was being hunted by something, and that something was inside her brain. She clenches her eyes, shaking her head “No, not this. Not now– come on Nikki, let’s call uncle Mike and…go visit your nonno.” she had to ease her mind, especially after that.

And she hated how her heart felt cold when that happened.

Some more intersting bbdw voiceline codes

100 - Extended/multiple new unit lines? not sure which is the case but there are definitely more to the new unit dialogue than what is on bbwiki

101-110 - Appears to be some sort of relationship building dialogue? Usually starts off as a formal introduction, contains characters talking about their powers, inner world, what they think of you, etc. and ends in a commitment of friendship of some sort. Shiori's sounded a little more like a love confession though LOL

122 - Seems like some sort of skill check failure? Not sure if it's an unused feature or if this is something that could have been triggered in the game

123-125 - (probably more for lower ranked units) Rank ascension dialogues

132-137 - Hobbies, likes, dislikes, characters seem to have more than one of some of these too!

I talked about the holiday dialogue codes a while ago but ig I'll repeat it

300+ - Dialogue about other characters they're close to! I've seen characters go up to 305 at the most I believe.

Anyway, documenting this for personal organization and also to kind of rally people to check out the characters they're interested in if they have any sort of translation know-how! This sort of dialogue is super interesting to me even for characters I don't like or care about and it feels like an injustice that so much characterization work has been nearly tossed away because it's in a game that didn't sell well and had to terminate service. I'm pretty sure you can find all the audio clips on BBWiki as well.

Continuing the timeline for the second half of Tokyo Ghoul!

There's a timeskip of 6 months, which brings us into June 2012.

Chapter 89 is specifically July 1st (Touka's Birthday).

And since only 9 chapters are before this, and it seems like not many days pass by in that time (personally I calculated 4-6 days), the timeskip must start in late June.

By Chapter 125, it's not quite Summer Vacation yet. And the Anteiku Raid either starts that very night, or the following night.

For Japanese schools, Summer Vacation starts mid to late July. (The dates change depending on the year and school, but I did see one example as being July 20th, which coincidentally lines up with a Friday for 2012, so I used that date here. But keep in mind this is just an estimate; it could have been sometime within the following 2 weeks)

Which means that the Kanou Lab Arc & Anteiku Raid Arc (Chapters 80-143) takes place over, at most, 1 month's time!

(Also, it's worth noting that Japanese schools begin in April. Summer Vacation is simply a school break, it doesn't separate the school years like it does in other countries. So Touka graduated from her 2nd high school year and began her 3rd (final) high school year over that 6 month timeskip. So when Anteiku was raided, her school year was still beginning; she still had several more months of school to go - until March.)

Notes:

Tokyo Ghoul takes place in 2011-2012, as seen on Kaneki's school notebook in chapter 23

September:

Kaneki's date with Rize is never given a calendar date in the manga, nor the exact amount of days between him scoring a date with Rize and going on the date itself, but between Rize's Takada Building kill being found on Sept 28th, and Kaneki's "weeks" spent in the hospital before his discharge on Oct 21, we can estimate their meeting and date sometime after Sept 28th through the first week-ish of October

October:

Based on the dates of Hide's texts to Kaneki in Chapter 2 (Oct 21) and Chapter 6 (Oct 31) we know that 10 days has passed in that time.

(But personally I find it unclear which manga scenes specifically fall on what days. Technically all that's important to know is that Kaneki's been starving on his own for 10 days, in addition to "weeks" in the hospital.)

November:

The Nishiki vs Kaneki fight doesn't have a canon date but based on the other dates we have, it must happen sometime between Oct 1 - Oct 4

Touka takes Kaneki to meet Uta on a Saturday (Ch 11)

As seen on Hinami's wanted poster in Ch 20, Ryoko died around 7:30pm on Nov 9

As stated in Ch 22, Kusaba was killed at 10:30pm on the 10th of the month.

Chapter 30 states that it's been about 10 days since Kusaba's death, which brings us to Nov 20, but given that its a school day I added 1 more day to make it Monday not Sunday.

In Chapter 33 Tsukiyama invites Kaneki on a "date" in 3 days' time on Sunday

I'm not entirely sure when Kimi's kidnapping and the resulting church fight happens. I think Kaneki says he's been staying days (plural?) in Anteiku after the restaurant ordeal, but visually it looks like its only been a single day? So its possible that might be pushed a few days further

December:

Kaneki's escape from Yamori is confirmed to be at 12am on Dec 20 (which is also his birthday). The other dates you can find by working backwards from this.

Yoshimura stated the CCG would need 18-20 days to prepare to raid Aogiri (Ch 66)

Banjou's escape plan needed to wait 5 days for the safest day, as of Kaneki joining them (Ch 55)

Kaneki was kidnapped in Ch 52, Ch 53 shows a full day has passed, up to 23:33 aka 11:33pm, which then transitions to Kaneki waking in ch 54 and being brought to Tatara.

My december estimates on the calendar are using the shorter estimate of 18 days (I mean, Hide did give the CCG the exact location of Aogiri for free so...)

Here’s a cheat sheet I made for myself to know the chapter numbers for when significant HakYona Moments occurred in the Akatsuki No Yona manga. I figured I’d just share it in case anyone else finds it useful.

“You know what people say when a pilot is looking at the sky don’t you?”

Rooster’s eyes drop from the said sky towards Payback, his friend offering him a steaming mug, muttering to be careful because of the heat, “How many birds are you looking at.” Rooster finishes it with a soft chuckle, dropping his gaze to the mug then back up at the sky, it was just now turning red because of sunlight with few birds flying in the distance, “I’m just thinking about Bea.”

“Figures.”

He narrowed his eyes in his friend’s direction, then chuckled briefly,”I can’t be blamed for that, now can I? I can’t help but miss my wife.”

“I am aware, Rooster. We all are. How is she by the way?”

Considering the last time they talked was three weeks ago, he sent her a message asking exactly that, he was still holding his phone awaiting for her reply this very moment after all, “I don’t know, she hasn’t answered.” it was what? Midnight back in Cali…he should’ve thought better and maybe send his message much later that day but he couldn’t help himself.

These past weeks involved a lot of debriefs, training, surveillance, more training and more surveillance. Whatever they had going on beyond their line of sight was absolutely well guarded, so much that not even the drones sent months back worked…hence why they asked actual,living pilots to do this mission.

Was Rooster annoyed?

A little.

Because whatever technology was hidden there, it was strong enough to break a military grade drone in a matter of seconds. He was nervous, he had to make sure they all got over this without hurting themselves.

The new pilots seemed to be excited, this base had enough room for them to train and burn all that energy from inside before they did go to the actual mission.

Rooster takes a sip of the steaming coffee, relishing its warmth and flavor as he contemplates his response to Payback's question. He takes a moment to gather his thoughts before speaking.

"I haven't heard from her in a while, and it's been eating at me," Rooster admits, his voice quiet. "I know she has her hands full taking care of Nicole and herself…and the house, but it's tough being away and not knowing how they're doing."

Payback nods sympathetically, understanding the weight of Rooster's words. "I can only imagine,buddy. Being away from family is never easy, especially in situations like this. My mom still messages me daily."

Rooster only met Payback’s mother once, she was a nice lady, shorter than her son but clearly the voice of reason in that household. She kinda reminded him of his own mother in a way.

Rooster's gaze drifts back to the sky, his mind wandering as he envisions Beatrice's face and the sound of her laughter, it was so melodic and dreamy…and he was almost feeling sick by missing her so much. He can almost feel her presence beside him, providing comfort in the midst of uncertainty.

"I miss her so damn much," Rooster confesses, "I just want to be there, to hold her in my arms, to see our children grow up together…I feel like I’m losing it.”

Payback places a hand on Rooster's shoulder, offering silent support. "You’ll go back soon, the reunion will make every second apart worth it."

Rooster takes a deep breath, finding solace in Payback's words. He knows deep down that he and Beatrice share a bond that can withstand any distance or challenge, it was how it worked before and it’s how it works now. It's that unwavering love and connection that keeps him going, even in the toughest moments.

"I'll hold onto that," Rooster says, determination lacing his voice. "Anyway, you here for something else or,” he holds up his coffee mug, “Are you just being nice?”

“I’m always nice. But I’m here to let you know that tomorrow’s training is yours.”

“What? Isn’t it Coyote’s?”

“It was, but I think it’ll be much better if you go.”

Rooster furrows his brows, bringing the coffee to his lips and letting the warmth spread all over his body, “...huh. I can manage something, some of them are growing restless and that’s never good.” he flicks his eyes back towards the main hall, seeing one of the pilots walking by, “That one is too much of a hothead.”

Payback nods in agreement, following Rooster's gaze to the pilot who just walked by. "Yeah, I've noticed.It's a good opportunity for you to take the lead and guide these new recruits."

Rooster takes another sip of his coffee, considering Payback's suggestion. He knows that mentoring and training the new pilots is an important responsibility, and he’s honored he was chosen as the mission leader.

"You're right," Rooster says, a thoughtful expression crossing his face as he crosses one of his arm under the other. "I can take charge of tomorrow's training. Hopefully, I can instill some discipline and help them understand the importance of teamwork and focus. Especially that guy."

Payback smiles, knowing that Rooster is the perfect person for the job. "I have full confidence in you, buddy. “

“You do?”

“Yeah, have I ever lied to you? You are doing good,Rooster.”

Rooster's eyes crinkle with a hint of amusement. "Well, I wouldn't go that far, but I appreciate the vote of confidence.”

“Anytime,buddy.” Payback clinks his mug with Rooster’s. “Anytime.”

Rooster and Payback share a moment of brief silence, something rare and yet so…ominous considering the location they were in. There was ice and snow everywhere they looked, thankfully they were both warm, but Rooster had to admit it looked like a Stephen King movie.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy indeed.

Thankfully Payback breaks the silence, after licking his lips and humming happily because of the coffee, “How are you though? Excited for the double combo you guys are having?”

He blinks up at Payback in confusion, eyes locked on his friend before he relaxes “Ah, you know," Rooster starts, a soft smile playing on his lips, "I am very excited. So is Bea…I know it’s nerve wracking and I know the age difference is a matter of months for the kids but… it feels right? It wasn’t planned, or anything like that." he rubs the pad of his thumb over the mug’s rim, “But I think we’ll manage it,I know we will.”

Payback raises an eyebrow, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Oh, is that so? I hope you're ready for some serious daddy duty. Three kids can be quite the handful."

Rooster chuckles,"Believe me, I'm up for the challenge. I’ll need more than three little kids to scare me. I want to be the best father I can be."

Payback makes a face, looking to the side. "I have three nephews and four nieces, I know how hard it can be but…if there’s anyone that can do it is you.And I’m not saying that because I am Nicole’s favorite uncle."

“I think it’s the mustache,” Rooster adds, tapping his own, “Nicole connects it with me…so, you are her favorite because of that.”

Payback bursts into laughter, shaking his head. "Ah, yes, the mustache. It must hold some kind of magical power over kids. Not because I’m funny and I’m teaching her card tricks."

Rooster’s smile drops, “You are teaching my daughter card tricks?”

“It’s not that bad, it’s mainly UNO…but she has to know about it.”

Rooster chuckles, shaking his head in disbelief, “Unbelievable,I swear, y’all are just fuckin’ dangerous. I don’t trust any of y’all.” but he’s not being serious and he sighs, leaning his back against the wall, “...but she does have the best uncles and aunts she could ever ask for. So I’m glad, in reality, that you are all here.”

“You are more than welcome.” Payback smiles, then flicks his eyes when Rooster’s phone lit up, “I think Bea just replied-” he didn’t even finish his sentence for Rooster to completely forget about his coffee and bring the phone to his ear, walking away. Payback blinked, still in the same spot, before shaking his head with a laugh, “Ah, young love.”

Rooster is walking away so quickly his hands are shaking, but he does bring the phone to his ear, “Hello? Gorgeous?” the video call is crackling a bit and he has to lift the phone up to show the screen better and find a good corner to hide and talk to Beatrice while it occurs. Beatrice’s big green eyes look back at him, she looked exhausted but she was there, right there, “Baby. Baby,hi, can you hear me?”

Her camera shakes a bit as she adjusts herself on the bed, bringing the cover to her face, “Yeah. Hi Roos.”

“Hi,gorgeous…did I wake you? I know it’s late there.”

Beatrice lets out a tired laugh, her voice laced with affection. "No, silly. I couldn't sleep anyway.I have…company.” Beatrice tilts the camera to show Nicole leaning against her leg, eyes locked on the laptop screen as Dr.Chimp runs on it, her teething ring loosely between her teeth because she was so enthused by the episode.

Rooster's worried expression softens as he listens to her. "Oh my God,she’s adorable, can she hear me?”."

Beatrice turns her head to Nicole, their daughter was too focused on the laptop to see what was going on. "I think she can but there’s something else in her mind." she giggles “Give it a few seconds…I mean, how long can you talk?”

Rooster brings the phone closer to his face "I can talk for a little bit, it’s fine, don’t worry. How are you? Are you okay? We haven’t spoken in a few weeks.”

Beatrice's tired eyes flicker as she tries to keep herself awake, shrugging at him and holding her head up "Well,I’m managing, Roos. I uh." she rubs her eyes with her fingers before stifling a yawn, “I’ve been working at the bar still,Penny agreed on letting me stay until I reach four months, then I can get maternity leave.”

“She let you do that?”

“You know,I think it involved a lot of crying on my part.” she mutters while looking to the side, “And some begging, but…I…the bar helps me work my brain. Y’know? Like,” three taps against her own forehead, ‘It’s been getting loud here.”

Rooster’s smile falters, “Are you going to Dr.Varma?”

“Yes,I am. She’s been helping me a lot and I leave Nikki with my parents when that happens- oh my dad is better, by the way, but he needs to keep the meds for a longer while.”

“Any mood swings or cravings?”

She thinks about it, pursing her lips, then looking to the side where his eyes couldn't follow, “Oh!Um..I ate some peach sorbet with chocolate sauce.” she pauses, “It shouldn’t be as good as it is,Rooster. Oh my God, it’s so good.” she holds up an empty bowl, “I’ve had it while Nikki was here after I got back from my parents…it’s really good.”

Rooster listens attentively to Beatrice, his concern growing with each word she speaks. He can see the exhaustion in her eyes, and it tugs at his heartstrings that she’s trying to stay awake to talk to him. "I'm glad you're seeking help from Dr. Varma, Bea. It's important to take care of yourself, especially during this time. And I'm relieved to hear that your dad is doing better, even if he still needs medication."

Beatrice lets out a weary sigh, scratching the side of her face "Yeah, it's been a rollercoaster, but we're getting through it. Having my parents' support has made a world of difference. And Nikki... she's just incredible.” Nicole finally looks back, her toy long forgotten when she sees who’s on the other side, already babbling happily.

“Dada!” she crawls forward, grabbing one side of the phone while Beatrice holds the other, bringing her mouth to the frontal camera and breathing on it. He was sure she was just trying to give him a kiss and it was precious. She pulls back, those chubby cheeks appearing chubbier when seen from below “Dada?”

“Yeah, it’s me honey.” he coos quietly, thankful that this room was meant for privacy, “Hi, hi birdie. Oh you look so nice.” Nicole gurgles, smiling with pure glee over his words, ‘Oh I see more teeth already.”

‘Yeah, they are growing fast.” Beatrice laughs, gently holding Nicole close to herself so she doesn’t fall forward, “It’s been better now that we are going from breastfeeding to the bottle, because ow. She’s got some strong chompers– no,Nikki,” said chompers appeared into view when she once again brought the phone close to her mouth, babbling something he could barely understand.

Her vocabulary was getting better and she was able to communicate more…and he loved hearing that cute voice. He only watched, completely enamored by his two girls, but especially how Beatrice looked at Nicole. She was so focused on holding their daughter up she looked up in surprise when he spoke again, “You are such a good mom.”

Her green eyes widened back at him, “Huh?”

“You.” he laughs gently, “Are such a good mom.” And cue the red cheeks “Oh i love I can make you blush after four years together, brings back lovely memories of me pining for you at the bar.”

Rooster grins mischievously, "Smooth? Me? I'm just stating the obvious, gorgeous.”

Beatrice's cheeks flush even more, her voice filled with affection but a bit muffled since she covers part of her face with her hand. "Gosh, you are unbelievable…well, I guess I'll accept the compliment, but only because it's coming from you. “

“Oooh, is it because I’m cute?”

“It’s because you are the cutest.” she smiles, “And you are an amazing dad too.”

Rooster's smile softens, his voice quiet as he replies. “Thank you, babe.” he whispers "I think I’m doing okay too. But we are a team so…maybe we can share that prize?"

Beatrice sputters a laugh, a tender expression on her face. "Alright, fine, I can handle a tie." Nicole babbles more, turning the camera towards her telling her father about everything her little seven years old mind could handle, “You know she’s pushing herself up more.”

“Is she?”

“Yesterday I saw her trying to stand up by the kitchen door, only to sit back on her butt.” Beatrice smiles, “...I think she’ll walk soon.”

Rooster is speechless for a few seconds. Nicole. Walking! She’s going to walk soon! And…and he wouldn’t be there to see her do it. His smile falters for a second and his eyes move away from Beatrice’s, a cold hand of guilt squeezing his stomach and immediately making him regret a lot…and Beatrice could see it, “Don’t blame yourself,Brad.”

“I’m not.” his wife raises her brows up, clearly not believing him, “I…well…”

"Rooster, I know you. I can see it in your eyes. Don't blame yourself for not being here. We both made this decision, and we knew the sacrifices that would come with it."

Rooster's gaze meets Beatrice's,damn she’s right, she’s so right, "I know, Bea, but it doesn't make it any easier. I want to be there for every milestone, every moment, and I hate that I'm missing out on this."

Beatrice reaches out her hand to hold the phone better, and it seems like she’s holding his face instead, her voice soothing. "I understand, Roos. It's not easy for me either. But remember, this is temporary. And when you come back, we'll have so many moments to cherish together...a lot more"

Rooster takes a deep breath, letting the cold air enter his lungs and make his heart feel lighter. "You're right, gorgeous. This is temporary. “ he smirks, “We gotta figure something we can all do when I come back.”

Beatrice gives him a reassuring smile, her voice filled with unwavering belief. "I agree…but remember: You're an incredible father, and I have no doubt that our little girl will have so many amazing moments with you. Right now, focus on what you need to do, and know that we're here supporting you every step of the way."

Rooster's grip tightens on the phone, voice shaking just a bit. "Thank you, Bea. I needed to hear that. I love you both so much, and I can't wait to be back with you." he looks down at the time and frowns, “Babe…I gotta go. I have stuff to do and you look ready to pass out.”

Beatrice's eyes shimmer with love,cheeks still dusted red. "You would be right, lieutenant.” his pupils enlarge and shrink immediately “But go ahead,okay? It’ll be fine…We love you too, Roos. Take care of yourself and stay safe. We'll be counting down the days until we're all together again."

“Me too.” he whispers, hesitating on finishing the call, “Already countin’.”

“Good.” Beatrice brings Nicole close, waving that chubby hand at him, ‘Say bye,Nikki. Byeee, I love you dada!”

“Buh-bah!”

“Good! Very good!” she gives Rooster one last look, her cheeks flexing as she smiles, “I love you…stay safe.” and she finished the call, mainly because she was too tired to notice, he could see her eyes blinking hard, trying to stay awake.

And he stares at the background, their wedding, on his phone for a few seconds. He squares his shoulders, rolls his neck and breathes out of his mouth, “...alright.” he clears his throat, “I got stuff to do.”
