[TRANS] 250806 Filmmaker R&K’s CEO Kang Hye Jung interview on YoonA and ‘Pretty Crazy’

Even amidst the Korean film market’s slump, the peak summer season has arrived. Major domestic distributors, who had been cautious about releasing films throughout the first half of the year, are now releasing some of their best films they have been saving. We will introduce the three films from major distributors that will dominate theaters this summer. The third film is ‘Pretty Crazy’.

“There will be a sense of resolution, laughter and drama, similar to ‘EXIT’.” Kang Hye Jung, CEO of Filmmaker R&K introduced the movie ‘Pretty Crazy. During the marketing process, there is a lot of talk about this being the director’s new work. Of course, it is definitely different from ‘EXIT’, but there are also some similarities.

In fact, ‘Pretty Crazy’ is a project that Director Lee had planned for quite some time, even before ‘EXIT’. After the success of ‘EXIT’, Director Lee handed the script to CEO Kang, who decided to produce it without hesitation. Even though there were physical constraints on undertaking a big budget film in the wake of the pandemic, it is the unique and vivid style of Director Lee that appealed to her.

“Typically, cultural art films often deal with dark themes, but Director Lee is different. He believes that the more you dig into humanity, the better it becomes. This connects with the protagonist of this film. He revealed the weakest link in human nature but did not present the weak as a sympathetic figure. It's a warm, humane perspective on the world. It is also the part that I love most about this film."

The connection to ‘EXIT’ is not just limited to Director Lee. Not only are the cinematographer, gaffer and arts director the same, Lim YoonA who led ‘EXIT’ as ‘Eui Joo’, has also joined the cast as the main character. Taking on the dual roles of an ordinary adult and a devil, Lim YoonA maximized the innocence and slickness she previously displayed on screen, bringing laughter to the audience.

“Director Lee said he wanted to give the role to YoonA the most. I was initially worried due to the dual roles and the occult setting as a devil, but YoonA readily accepted it. Unlike other movies, the devil in our movie is portrayed in a cute and playful way, and YoonA perfectly embodies that. Because of this, our film became uniquely different from the rest.”

‘Pretty Crazy’ experienced a change of male lead during the production process. Regardless of the reason, it must have been a difficult process for everyone involved. CEO Kang expressed her gratitude saying, “I am truly grateful to YoonA. Even back then, YoonA and her agency trusted us. Ahn Bo Hyun was recommended by Director Lee. I knew him from ‘Itaewon Class’ and at that time, clips of ‘Military Prosecutor Doberman’ were circulating. His image is completely different from his previous works. As this is his film debut, I thought that it would be refreshing. Most importantly, he has great chemistry with YoonA, as well as an innocent boyish look. After watching ‘Yumi’s Cells’, the choice turned into confidence. Of course, there was a visual gap (laughs).”

CEO Kang continued to give thumbs up to the two actors for their passionate performances. A particular memorable scene was the scene where they jumped into the Han River. In the movie, Seonji and Gilgu were strolling by the Han River park at dawn when they encountered an unexpected situation, and both of them end up diving into the river. The two actors performed this scene themselves.

“That scene, in a way, was absurd, but they pulled it off with such incredible humor. Besides, the diving scene was filmed by the actors themselves on Wonhyo Bridge. Of course, there were coaches and safety personnels around, but that doesn’t make it easy. YoonA, in particular, has tenacity, just like she did in ‘EXIT’. She will always say, ‘I will give it a try. Never have she say, ‘I can’t do it’.”

However, as with all films, ‘Pretty Crazy’ has met with mixed reactions from film enthusiasts after the release of the trailer. The most divisive aspect is the setting of Seonji, who becomes a devil at night. CEO Kang, who is aware of such reaction, stated, "We didn't make the movie without knowing that there would be an opinion that it was childish in the first place. However, the setting of this movie is basically a fantasy. The devil isn’t the possessed figure you often see in documentaries. I didn’t want to go with that tone. Although it bothers the owner of the body, but it is not an evil being. I see it as a fairy tale. I believe that it would be more convincing when it adhered to a fairy tale style. I completely excluded any elements of reality. I thought that if I pulled the brakes here, it would lose its original fun. Above all, there is also a a clear message to convey in this movie.

The message CEO Kang mentioned was ‘usefulness’. The movie conveys this message not through direct dialogue or actions, but through a series of events that unfold as Gilgu, who had been unaware of his own worth, met Seonji and experiences change and growth.

“I was truly impressed by Gilgu’s growth. I often thought that humans aren’t meant to live alone, but rather become worthy existence to someone. It is not something big like going to the moon or saving someone’s life like ‘EXIT’, rather, if there is something that I can truly do for someone or something, then I will do it.”

At the same time, CEO Kang hopes that this intention would be well communicated to the audience. Of course, the theatre situation remains challenging, but CEO Kang believes in the power of ‘Pretty Crazy’ and the power of storytelling.

“I felt sorry for the director and the actors because this movie could not be released in a slightly better (movie) market situation. But I think it is more about storytelling than the size of the movie market right now. I also produced ‘Pretty Crazy’ with the mindset that if the message I want to convey is clear, there is a chance of success. In that aspect, I think this movie will be a crucial turning point for Filmmaker R&K as well. Despite challenges from platform, I want to continue to challenge myself in movie and genre and continue to make good Korean movies until the end while waiting for directors with originality."
