i'm not sure if it's just me but i'm so furious at the fact that the writers got "bored" of vi.
vi has so much potential and she's also gone through a lot. yes, she was one of the reasons powder turned into jinx but people dismiss the fact that vi is also a kid? she's seen as the leader. vander even states in season 1, episodes 1, "those kids look up to you." and "if you say run, they run. you say swim, they dive in. you say light a fire, they show up with oil." just the amount of pressure these sentences bro.
she had so much responsibility at such a young age. "whatever happens, it's on you." ???????hello?? she's also a kid too??????
and the fact that vi joined the enforcers? i know that she joined the wrong thing for the right reasons but they didn't go into depth about those other reasons. the reason vi hated the enforcers so much because they were the main reason her parents are dead. leaving her with just her little sister, powder, at such a young age.
throughout season 1 ( and maybe 2. when i'm typing this, i kinda forgot some details ) she never gives up on her baby sister. she cares so much for her powder. vi did not abandon powder. that's something i'll stand by forever. when we see vi "abandoning" her, it's in powder's perspective. she doesn't see marcus take vi.
vi lost her whole family. jinx/powder, vander, claggor, mylo. she lost everything. and people hate her because she didn't care enough??
honestly, i'm not saying that vi is the best character in arcane. she does have flaws like the others but hating her to the point that you say "she's the real jinx" makes me wanna choke. i understand if you dislike her and i respect your opinion. saying
( i'm sorry if this doesn't make sense... i'm not really good with my words but i hope you understand like a bit of it. just wanted to rant lol :p )

honestly i kinda wanna rewrite/reorder looloo land and seeing stars. mostly because i feel like it would work so much better thematically and especially with the final and what it was building up to. like okay hear me out on this one guys
in episode two we get introduced to octavia who is excited for something and she's trying to get stolas' attention so that they can go to see the meteor shower or the tears- whatever. but he can't do that because he's arguing with stella and... yeah she's emo and we quickly understand "oh she's sad because of this divorce" instead of her just seeming purely angsty at the start
so what does octavia do? well she runs off and decides to steal the book and then blah blah blah, stolas is worried about finding octavia because 1) thats his daughter and 2) he doesn't want stella finding out that octavia's lost and using that against him somehow
so anyways it plays out how "seeing stars" did for the most part and reunion! then we have loo loo land where basically stolas is trying to make it up to stella because of the whole thing that happened with him missing seeing the thing with her
she's not really excited and she doesn't want to go, especially because that was more of something she did as a kid AND now they're actually like more in the divorced stage and stuff and that's affecting her a lot more
so anyways same thing happens, stolas flirts with blitz causing her to run away and then he promises to never leave her for blitz... you guys see where im going with this?
yeah he leaves her for blitz at the trial. i feel like that works so much better because he just promised to never leave her and it would affect her so much more because her parents are literally split and stuff.
idk i just like this a lot better than what we got. i feel like switching the episodes around would make it a lot better but thats just me. i also feel like it would help us feel with octavia a little more because putting ocatvia's big forgiving stolas DIRECTLY (as in THEY resolve the issue) at the start made people kinda hate her later on and made her feel more repetitive
they shouldve have loona convincing octavia like "hey your dads going through a lot but he's trying and you should at least let him try" and stuff like that first because then it paints octavia in the forgiving matter that she DOES HAVE and then having her forgive stolas himself later on would only add onto that
THEN having her reject hearing him out again with the final would hit hard cause then it'd feel more like she was being pushed to her breaking point. especially with her song because she JUST forgave him for this and he JUST promised not to leave her for blitz
this was really repetitive okay sorry bye-
#octavia goetia#octavia helluva boss#octavia deserves better#stolas#stolas goetia#helluva boss#helluvaverse#helluva#hb octavia#hb#seeing stars#loo loo land#critisism#helluva boss critical#i feel like this would be better#idk tell me what you think-

Sorry, hijacking a post here. I wanted to add my own thoughts to this too. As some one who is largely a Dean fan but also as someone who also loves Sam.
I agree partly. I agree that Sam not looking for Dean or cas hurt him. I don't think he was upset with Sam because he decided to stop being a hunter but rather cause he expected Sam to look for him, to try to save him no matter what because that's kinda what they do for each other.
Despite their flaws, these brothers will go to hell and back for each other. That's what we know as an audience ever since Season 1 and that's what Dean knows too.
They can always be sure that if the other was in danger, or dead that the other will fight tooth and nail to bring them back. Even if they aren't comfortable talking with each other, or having conversations without their walls and shields. (Mostly Dean because he doesn't like putting his feelings on Sam. 1. Because he was taught to help/take care of Sam. 2. Because his trauma made him believe that his feelings don't matter and he is there to help others. Which of course isn't true but John sucks)
The reason why I really dislike Season 8 Sam is because his decisions and actions don't match up with any other season of Sam. I was blind sighted. Completely baffled when I watched it.
Because the Sam we know WOULD of looked for Dean and Cas. From everything we know, he would of. There's so many examples of him desperately looking for ways to save Dean. From Season 1 to 5, then again in season 10 and on. Season 1 episode 12. All of season 3. Flashbacks in season 4 to when Dean was dead are all examples of this.
My favorite trait of Sam's, other than his snarkiness of course, is his stubborness and the things he's willing to do to get what he wants. It reminds me of John but not, because while John will push until he dies to get revenge even if it hurts his kids, even if HE hurts his kids in the process, Sam cares about Dean and those around him. He will hold back if it means itll hurt Dean. Exp: Season 1 finale. The exception being, if Dean is dying. The things he's willing to do to save his big brother is insane and I would do the same thing if I were him.
In Season 8, Sam was weirdly apathetic about Dean being gone. I was very confused. I thought he was possessed or something.
So I'm with Dean. I would be hurt too. Simply because saving each other from death is their love language. Really. Its how they show their love--- by protecting and saving each other. When Sam didn't do that it was odd. Even I as a viewer had to wonder if Sam still cared about Dean, even if it should be obvious he does. Cause Sam, as we know, cares about Dean alot. However, season 8 didn't feel like Sam so I didn't know what to expect.
If Sam just looked for Dean, even for a week I would of been totally fine. Dean probably too. I would literally give not two shits that he started a life with Amelia, because I too, if I was sure my brother was dead and I was still hurt by my time in hell, would also look for some simple peaceful times. Do I think Sam, as characterized previously would settle down? Um, actually maybe. With season 7 basically being the 'sam suffers' season I do think he might of wanted a break.
I also have opinions on Sam not looking for Kevin but it doesn't really have much to do about this discussion and it's so out of character I can't even-
Now, my opinion is quite different from yours later in your post. I do not think Dean is controlling. like at all. He's not upset about Sam's independent thinking. And it's not like Sam cares about Dean's opinion on the healthy food he eats. Dean calls the salads he eats 'rabbit food' but Sam also comments on the junk food Dean eats. Its just these brothers teasing each other. It doesn't really mean anything. They aren't deeply insecure about their food.
Sam is also a VERY independent thinker. Hes constantly doing what he wants to do. He went with Dean in season 1 because he wanted to get revenge on the demon. He wanted to do hunts in season 2 (at least in the second episode) because he thinks it's what his dad would want, sure it's because of someone's (his stupid father) opinion but ultimately it's what he wanted to do. John isn't even there. In Season 3 he wants to save Dean, even if Dean doesn't want him too. Season 4 is literally Sam just doing what he wants despite Dean's warnings (which were correct of course. 😌 I'm proud of my boy) In season 5 he wants to stop the apocalypse. It was even his choice to let Lucifer take over his body in the end. Then it was his choice to sacrifice himself.
Most of the time Dean is encouraging Sam to do normal things. Hes actually quite upset that Sam didn't get a normal life. Like in Season 1 in the Shtriga episode when he admits that he wanted Sam to have kept his innocence as a child.
Dean WANTS Sam to have a normal life. So that's not what he was upset about in season 8. It was cause Sam didn't even bother to look. Even for a bit. Even with the amount of energy and time it takes to do a simple hunt. He just decided that Dean was dead i guess and moved on.
However, Dean isn't insecure about Sam's independent thinking.
Man, season 8 Sam makes me mad.
I’m on S8 of my rewatch and man, Sam not looking for Dean after he disappeared into Purgatory really triggered Dean’s abandonment issues.
I mean, yeah, Dean was pissed off because Sam didn’t even bother looking for him, and just kind of started a new life for himself, which is understandable. But it just clicked for me how much that would have exacerbated Dean’s abandonment issues.
Dean’s abandonment issues are so severe, that he even has difficulty with Sam having independent thought. Sam thinking about things differently or viewing things differently set Dean off. So many times, Sam expresses his independent thought, and Dean takes it as a personal attack on his own views and quickly snaps at him.
I mean it even trickles down to the choices Sam makes about the food he eats or the fact that he likes jogging to stay fit.
Man…. that’s some serious shit right there.

hope you don’t mind my opinion!! but I think it would be so fun to have your version of Loguetown arc!! but I also agree that matching it to s2 would be amazing, so how about having your version as an extra or a spin-off?? tho it might not solve your problem with the connection it has to the story:’) or or or- you could have both of them and make it so they miraculously stayed for more than one day (or a day and a half) so you can have the parts you need and want to keep from your story for the first day and then add/accommodate the parts from OPLA s2 that will be shown as events of a later time?? these are just my silly suggestions tho, I know you’ll figure it out!! hope you’re having a nice day!!<3
Nonnie! I always love hearing what you guys think! This is a free and safe place to share what you want with me 🖤 because here is my other opinion lol
I just read an article that said Netflix released seven - SEVEN!!! - new characters that are being brought in this coming season. OPLA is about only 8 episodes for about an hour each. To give Robin and Tony Tony Chopper, along with all the others, appropriate run time there is just noooooo way, in my mind, that they are going to hit all of Loguetown arc and the others, ya know? So I might - MIGHT - a really big might, be safe when it comes to adding it in? Or it’s going to get glossed over. A lot of glossing is going to happen I think.
I’m 100000% sure when s2 does come out my ass will have to start over or fix some things, but I don’t plan on going too far. I just got a lot of thoughts about how they are going to add in 7 new characters for 8 episodes like this.
Rant over for now 🤣🤣🤣
#anon#answered#chaos in their bones#this is giving me literal chaos in my head#I just can’t comprehend how they are going to do it all#and like are they going to gloss over zoro seeing the Kuina look-a-like while shopping for swords??#cause I was going to have a scene like that and just#I got QUESTIONS and not enough answers#but I’m just gonna run with it and fix it when the time comes I think#I mean we know it’s Tashigi that reminds zoro of Kuina and they supposed to battle but damn#like is this going to be a 1 or 2 episode kinda thing???!#because alvida and buggy are also in Loguetown arc BUT chopper and Nico and viví are in a different one too#so like bro wtf

thinking about how eiji's a pole vaulter and how ash talks about eiji "flying" and how eiji's associated with bird imagery and how eiji's free (unlike ash) and how eiji comes in on a plane and leaves on a plane and how ash cannot fly, ash cannot be free, how nyc is ash's prison, and how ash is the leopard who dies climbing the mountain, unable to live at such elevation, how he was trying to reach the sky and be free but was always stuck to the earth, how he chose to die instead of climbing back down, how he chose to die where he could see the sky and hope and freedom almost like a bird with eiji's letter right in front of him rather than letting everything go wrong and ruin it once again, how eiji's a failed pole vaulter anyway, how a bad fall ruined his career and grounded him (physically and emotionally), how it took flying to america and meeting ash and needing to save him and skip for him to try flying again, how he landed hard and harsh and still the thought of that escape compelled ash to protect eiji at all costs because if he could fly that means something to him, even if he doesn't think he can fly, how eiji is the manifestation of his hope and how when he breaks and asks eiji to stay with him a while he folds himself over his legs and weighs him down and traps him and grounds him, how ash fights like hell to keep eiji alive not because he thinks he can be like him (hopeful, flying, innocent), but because he makes him forget the gravity of his situation, and so he can see eiji fly again. how he wants to see him escape. how eiji is a bird and ash is a wildcat and how ash never once saw eiji as prey. how eiji never saw ash as a predator. how it is eiji's naivete that first endears ash to him, how it is his freedom and flight and removal from darkness and his ability to leave that darkness that really roots eiji in ash's blood as something essential to him keeping on living in this hell of nyc. how it is that distance from the violence and that hope for the future that ash chooses to surround himself in as he dies. how ash dies in a dream because he feels more than anything that he can't fly like eiji, that he can never leave. how his violence is a part of him and will be forever, how it weighs him down. how he wants to enjoy the view from the mountainside rather than looking up from the ground below. as if they can both fly. as if he is with him up there and not grounded. eye-to-eye with what he can't have, seeing eiji's homeland: the sky. how he dies trying to reach the top because he couldn't take retreating and trying again. how ash, tired and tired and tired and convinced it will go on forever if he crawls back down the mountain, chooses to close his life deluged in eiji, in eiji's insistence that they can fly together, in eiji's hope for him and for them, in eiji's beautiful dream. how ash dies without trying to realize that dream. how ash, in dying, destroys it.
#banana fish spoilers#I'M HAVING A FUCKING MOMENT#mutual reblogged exactly one (1) piece of ash fanart and sent me on A Multiple Hour Long Thing and now im rewatching it lol#yes i am only on episode 2 yes i am still going to write big long analysis posts ANYWAY#whatever hope this makes sense. anyway#banana fish#okumura eiji#ash lynx#asheiji#hhhhh i can't believe i've only watched this twice in like what 5.5 years?? sheesh#anywayyyyyyy i care about them a lot ok. god#and yes i DO kinda have beef with the decision to kill ash off at the end but it really does say so much About his character#that he chose to die in the way that he did even though he's been throwing his life away since episode 1#dying in peace in comfort in solitude rather than in some chaotic battlefield.... ough...... in the peace eiji alone could give him.....#anywayss i relate to ash a little more than i should so. this one's for us cool guy bottoms up#edit i uh.... i forgot it was a leopard.... in the story..... but whatever it doesn't really affect the symbolic meaning it's just embarras#ing that i forgot >;/

Almost done watching alabasta. It's even better than I remember
#PEAK#maria watches one piece#things netflix is likely going to cut from the last episodes:#1. thos dumb guards that tried to take croc by using a suicide drug#2. water luffy. i love it but its too goofy for live action#3. the bomb timer will probably be longer maybe an hour. no way all this is happening in less than 30 minutes#4. not a cut but im 100% sure they will make a vivi/koza romance i mean it kinda is implied already and it has that star crossed lovers vibe#i hate to think of straight vivi but if they were pushing for zoro and nami they will push for vivi and koza#5. i hope they dont cut that usopp was the one to give nami the clima tact I WILL KILL MYSELF if they take even more from me#they cant keep erasing the nami and usopp bond#6. shaka might not make it folks i can see them merging shaka and pell into one another to save time

Ok that's actually so fucking sweet? Tysm for the tag Dark ^^
1- last song: Drop pop Candy - Vivid BAD SQUAD and Internet Overdose
2- Last Book: well if manga counts I'd be Mob Psycho 100 volume 1 (love that manga and just got my hands on the first vol)
3- Last movie: the shining!! I actually wanna make lots of posts on it since I loved it, I definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a old horror movie experience and some psychological discomfort, like, not gonna extend much, but as a victim and someone who lived with someone similar to Jack, THIS MOVIE GOT ME ON THE EDGE OF MY SIT
4- last tv show: The midnight gospel!! I actually rewatched the last ep for inspiration for a podcast I'm writing myself, plus, it's a moment in my life I need to brace myself for imminent grief, of loss of people but also of changes in life, things that will never come back to be like they were before, and that episode just..helps me a lot, I definitely recommend the show and I'd LOOVE to discuss it with people
5- last thing searched: "does Adult Swim still exist as a Cartoon Network segment?" Yeah it's bc of an iceberg I was making
6- Favorite color: purple and crimson. Like purple is a color so tied to important aspects in my life but also a color that kinda always brought me comfort and defined me, so deep, so understanding, connected to creativity and spirituality...and well crimson is so elegant and unique, a shade of red no other shade can compare to
7- Sweet/Savory/Spicy: SWEEEEEEET like I have this gigantic sweet tooth, while I was studying I munched on chocolate chips to keep going, every weekend when I visit my dad, he lives in a japanese street, and in there there's this famous cafe and ALWAYS when I have enough money I run to the cafe and I get a new york roll pistachio flavored and a boba from a nearby store and eat it happily, sweets give me life.
Also spicy food can die in hell, it's just pain no joy.
8- relationship status: dating for almost a year now!! I'm very happy and do imagine a future with the person I'm with, we're actually going to an LGBT exposition, it'll be fun ^^
9- looking forward to: creating more things and talking more to my moots. I mean I know so many amazing people and I'd love to know more about them, show them I care and support their projects, and..include them in my own things, also I'd love to create more in terms of writing, streaming and cosplay
10- Current Obsession: oh boy..bleach, Rick and Morty, Epic the musical and Cult of the Lamb
I actually managed to watch all 7 seasons of Rick and Morty in 3 days (only skipping some terrible eps like the horse one and the dragon one bc wtf) and I can't wait to talk more abt the show!! I'm playing cult of the lamb like I'll die if I don't and I'm actually making a goat cosplay from scratch!!
Epic kinda ignited my love for history and mythology as a whole and I can't stop listening to it, my favorite saga? Circe's saga.
And as for bleach..it never fully vanishes
Now I'mma tag blogs of people I'm not moot with but I'd love to meet, talk to, know more of (if it's not a problem) and then my actual moots

well basically like raise your hand if you’ve ever been blocked by a close mutual you though you were actually friends with and not just fandom-mates because you expressed an emotion they didn’t like because apparently they only want to interact with people who watch the same media as them and when you didn’t anymore they stopped talking to you and the media you DID have in common they gave up on once they found something more popular and seeing as that thing happened to be your favorite thing you graciously let them have because you believed you were friends and they would treat it with care and love but they didn’t and it made you feel like they didn’t respect you or like you or think of you as a person but rather as a faceless entity who sometimes could make Posts about tv shows you have in common. despite the fact they know what your face looks like because they’ve seen it because you’ve gotten together on zoom and watched movies together like friends do but that doesn’t mean anything i guess if you try to delicately have a conversation about how you feel because they just immediately dismiss you and start talking to you like you’re coworkers in a polite email chain because you said you didn’t like their tv show. which was a fact they already knew but didn’t take seriously because they were apparently never viewing you as a person! or has that only happened to me.
#and i’m not trying to make a callout post and start drama this is just my blog where i talk about my life#and i wouldn’t start drama because i’m not stupid enough to think anyone would take my side because no one likes me more than this other#person i’m pretty sure. due to the everything about me that kinda sucks i guess#but more so to do with the fact that there is a very small number of people on here i actually feel like. friends with. and everyone else#just follows the fandom posting they like best. which is fine and i do that as well#but i would probably be devastated if someone else i thought i was friends with didn’t pick me. so i’m not saying anything#i mean you could ask. but lately i’ve felt very fleabag season 2 episode 1 opening scene dinner. so#(‘no one’s asked me a question in 45 minutes’)#anyway. yeah. awesome. ok#um and it should go without saying that if there’s a traitor in my midst (dramatic way of saying that. i’m not actually like. beefing)#don’t like. send this post to who i’m talking about and make shit awkward. you’d think that’s common sense but it’s not#when i was ousted from stranger things fandom for committing the heinous crime of not liking steve there was a lot of insane shit that#happened. which i do not care to repeat. who sends someone’s vaguepost to the person they were vaguing that’s such bad etiquette fr 🙄#and i can’t believe how nice i was about it to those people i should have killed them that shit was so stupid#you had to be there#and also this isn’t fandom drama i’m just sad. so it’s completely different#because the fandom drama example i just gave was pure pettiness and bitchiness tbh. i was 20 what do you want from her

Congratulations to Never Let Me Go for being the second drama to get the highest rating from me this year. Currently preparing my mind and body to be insufferable about it forever.
#haha! sike! I've actually already started-#(list of things I did BEFORE finishing NLMG tonight:#1. downloaded the episodes to cherish and protect in case the downfall of internet is tomorrow/other disasters#2. bought a replica of Nueng's necklace for the price of two croissants in the not-very-legal market#3. included a shot from the series in a special gifset#4. had heated mental arguments with the people making negative comments about it#5. .......... considered giving FUTS another chance out of gratitude to PP (not sure yet but just the fact that I gave it a THOUGHT-))#//#well now that being said#I'm kinda disappointed there are only 2 new dramas in the annual list that got the ''I will definitely rewatch this'' badge#last year there were 3 BLs alone. not even counting OTHER genres!!! and in 2023 I watched many MORE dramas!!! what is this!!!!!!#was I unlucky. was I going after the wrong stuff. I keep thinking about that.#but there were also a good number of dramas that got the ''I might rewatch this'' badge#and even the ones I didn't really enjoy were important to give me perspective/parameter#so... no time was wasted. and I was doing what I like to do? so I guess it's ok...

rewatching under the oak and i know it’s bigger than all the other trees and the entire model is different but the idea that bugbo can just Know if something was put down deliberately rather than being there naturally apart of the globe is so cool to me and im adding it to my mental list of things i think bugbo can do
#the entire opening scene of that episode is my favourite part of the entire series i think#it’s either that or bugbo and gerbo’s entire first interaction in ep 1 where it goes from bugbo saying hi to him to going to get him the/#largest stones so they can build that stone structure they came up with together#OR the ending of familiar foe. that scene also means a lot to me because i think ive Said this before but Again it kinda flips the roles#and generally in that entire episode it’s gerbo doing the things bugbo usually does which was ALSO at the start of ep 2#i feel like it’s not far fetched to think that’ll be a continuing theme. anyway

my partner just finished deltarune chapter 1 :)
#we’ve been recording ~1 hour lets play sessions with a little post-game discussion for each episode#mostly for fun. breaking in a recording setup. he mostly shares the videos with his younger siblings#most of it probably isn’t super interesting to anyone who already knows the Lore. but things have come up here and there#i should go back through and summarize some of the more interesting points#kinda cool because he’s pretty much an outsider. i think he only played like an hour or two of undertale#especially interesting to see his impulses and reactions about stuff#he’s like. untainted lol. i had to remind him tonight who wd gaster is#anyway he’s excited about it. chapter 2 is gonna be fun

God I hope that new DMC anime is good because that first one was such dogshit
#the main thing that bugged me was the action scenes#Now I understand that since these are the smaller missions between the world ending shit Dante isn’t going to be challenged much at all by#these monsters of the week but why does the choreography have to be so average#the anime came on in a post DMC3 world the action outta look like a cutscene from that game#but instead it’s a blade clash here a bullet spam there just real milquetoast stuff#and that’s when you can actually SEE the action! Most times the anime cuts away from the combat or finds some other way to block it out#Even if the action wasn’t to the level of DMC3’s cutscenes this is still a poor showing for the studio that made Hellsing Ippo and OPM S1#that main grimace aside everything else was just…. kinda forgettable#the episodic story idea was pretty smart but it fell flat since most of the episodes were snoozefest#Seriously the only episodes I clearly remember are the first one and the one with Sparda’s apprentices#I can remember select MOMENTS from the other eps like Lady vs Trish or the strawberry sundae scene or the banshee rockstar lady fight#but I can’t actually remember the shit that led up to or followed any of that stuff#seriously how do you make the slice-of-life adventures of a Demon Hunter so uninteresting?#probably doesn’t help that said demon Hunter is pretty boring this time around. seriously all Dman does is mope about and complain#even if I subscribe to the whole “““hE’s dEpReSsEd!1!1!11””” thing I still feel there was a better way than making him#DMC2 Dante but moderately talkative.#(I don’t even hate how Dante is in 2 I just don’t like how y’all excuse one but not the other)#that said they should’ve had him be his typical cocky and explore how that demeanor is an unhealthy coping mechanism for his problems#or something like that#idk this anime just freakin sucks#to add some positivity: I like Patty. Her pestering little sister dynamic with Dman was pretty entertaining#and Morrison is p cool too being Dante’s agent and what not and I’m glad he came back in 5#huge melanin injection and all#devil may cry#devil may cry anime#dmc dante#patty lowell#J.D. carmy trapped in the freezer holy fuck i feel sick
#when richie called him donna i wanted to die#that episode um. well#i've been sitting here thinking about it and it's such a contrast to the last episode of season 1#that one had such a hopeful ending#the age old ''where do we go from here?'' felt exciting#now i kinda feel like ''..... well shit. we do we go from HERE?''#that's not a bad thing. i trust them to take me for whatever kind of ride they think is best#but i gotta admit i prefer the first season's conclusion so much more#i feel like i've just been emotionally edged lmao i'm being blue balled without catharsis or healing#aw hell i see why they don't show carmy stepping out of the freezer#because we're all still trapped in there with him. no resolution no closure#we better get a season 3 or i'm going ballistic#i didn't even want a season 2 bc i liked the contained full circle story of the first one#but now i need my closure

I have gotten a lot of messages saying that they really love the presentation of CURSE/KISS/CUTE. Often the commenter in question can’t say what exactly it is about the formatting that they appreciate, but that it just reads well and looks good. Well!!! Allow me to bare my wealth of secret knowledge for you once and for all:
I sorta just did some research into book typography...?
Here’s something you should know about web development, alright: typography on the web is really, really bad. The tools we have at our disposal—HTML and CSS—are incredibly powerful, but they are set up to fight you every step of the way towards Good Typography. When you know what you’re looking for, you can fix all the common issues quickly and easily. But it’s not easy to know what to look for, because
problematic typography is overwhelmingly the norm on the web, and
good typography is invisible.
Here’s a screenshot from CURSE/KISS/CUTE episode 0:
Now, I don’t want this post to come across as prescriptive. It is not my intention to tell you, “This is what good typography looks like, so follow my lead exactly.” I made a lot of choices with the typography of my web novel: many of those choices would not make sense in other contexts. What I want to convey to you is what those choices are, so that you will know they’re available to be made.
I mentioned that the web “fights you” when it comes to good typography. What do I mean by that? Well, check this out:
This is how that passage of text renders “by default.” In other words, this is how a web browser would render that text without any input from me about what styles to apply. It kind of sucks ass! But it also looks pretty familiar, right? This is not that far off from how a lot of websites—even websites full of prose (looking at you, AO3)—render text.
I think the most illustrative thing to do here would be to walk you through my thought process and show you, step by step, what decisions I made to turn this unstyled text into the styled version you see in the novel.
So, first things first:
1. We have got to shrink that text column.
Computer monitors... are wide. They are wider than they are tall. They are so wide, and they have so many pixels. This means you can fit a lot of characters on them. If you wanted, you could just have a wall of characters from the left side of the screen all the way to the right side. Talk about efficient!!
You should never, ever, ever do this.
This is one choice that I actually will make a prescriptive statement about, because it’s supported by quite a lot of research: fairly narrow text columns are more legible. Specifically, research seems to support the idea that a width in the range of 50 to 70 characters per line is the most comfortable for people to read*. Every font is different, so it takes a little doing to turn that “characters” figure into a pixel measurement; I went with 512 CSS pixels for the maximum width of my text column:
Isn’t that just so much nicer to read already?
*A commenter reminds me that I’d be remiss not to point out that the research on column width legibility isn’t completely conclusive. You do want to limit the width of your text columns, but going over the 70 character-per-line recommendation isn’t necessarily the end of the world, and you might have good reasons to do so. I did not: as mentioned, one of my goals was to mimic book-style typography, and books by nature have fairly restrained column widths, on account of they’re books.
2. Picking a font.
I’m not going to give you the blow-by-blow on how I decided what font to use. The short story is that I asked some designers, and one of the recommendations I got was the free font Crimson Pro, which I took a liking to immediately:
It’s just an all-around attractive serif font, but one thing I really like about it for use in a novel is its highly-visible quotation marks. They’re just kinda jumbo! They’re real big! Easy to see! In a novel, those things aren’t just ornamentation. It makes a great deal of practical sense for them to stand out just a bit. It also has a fairly large x-height, unlike a lot of the more traditional options, which is good for legibility on a computer screen.
3. Adjusting the line-height
Web browsers default to a line-height of about 1.2em, which, as you can probably tell, is quite cramped. If you go and Google “optimal line height for legibility”, you’ll get a number of results right off the bat suggesting 1.5em. Sounds good! Let’s do that:
Well... hmm. That’s definitely an improvement, but between you and me, it actually looks a bit too spacey to my eyes. I wonder why?
I’ll cut to the chase: the 1.5em recommendation makes some assumptions about the font you’re using. In Arial, the letter “A” is about 0.6em tall; in Crimson Pro, it’s about 0.5em. That means that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to spacing your lines, because different fonts have different amounts of empty space baked in. How annoying!
Let me tell you something about the kind of nerd I am. When I had this realization, I grabbed some books off my shelf and pulled out a literal micrometer. I started measuring the line-heights against various font features to see if there were any patterns I could spot in professional typesetting. Here’s what I found:
Almost every book on my shelf spaces lines such that the distance between one baseline and the next is about three times the x-height. How cool is that? I clapped my hands like a seal when I put this together.
Adjusting the line-height to match what I observed in the wild gives us this:
It’s a subtle difference, but to my eyes it feels just right. It’s almost like magic!
4. Paragraph spacing...
Let’s address the elephant in the room. Probably the most controversial choice I made with CURSE/KISS/CUTE’s typography was to opt for book-style paragraph indentation rather than web-style paragraph spacing—like so:
I did this for a few reasons:
It’s what I’m used to. I’ve read a lot of books, and this is just the way that books are formatted. I think for something aspiring to the title of “novel”, there’s value in making it look the way a reader probably expects a novel to look.
A novel has a lot of paragraph breaks in it. A paragraph in, say, an encyclopedia entry might go on for half a page or more; whereas it is unusual for a paragraph in a modern work of narrative prose to run for more than a handful of sentences, especially in any scene with dialogue. Because paragraph breaks are so common, spacing between paragraphs in a novel results in a lot of wasted space. Also, subjectively speaking, the additional space seems to me to lend an undue amount of weight to paragraph breaks. I’m just starting a new thought; there’s no need for a 21-gun salute, you know?
Having said that, here are some good reasons you might decide not to do paragraph indentation anyway:
Doing it right requires a bit of extra legwork. Notice how the very first paragraph in the image above has no indentation. That’s because it’s the start of a new section, and the first paragraph in a section traditionally goes unindented. This is an easy detail to miss, and it can be difficult to wrangle CSS into doing it for you automatically.
Web users don’t expect it. For the first decade of the web’s existence, there was no good way to do paragraph indentation; by the time CSS rolled around and made it easy, paragraph spacing had already become the norm. And while CURSE/KISS/CUTE may be a novel, it is also, specifically, a web novel!
But it’s my house and I get to make the rules, so I went with indentation. Incidentally, there seems to be a dire lack of research into the question of whether indentation or spacing is more legible for readers—but the data that does exist appears inconclusive at best. So, the choice really does come down to vibes.
5. The tragedy of justification.
You’ll note that one way in which I did not make my web novel look like a paper novel is the text alignment. It’s un-justified: the right margin is ripsaw-ragged.
This is because it is not possible to justify text on the web.
Oh, you can try. Look right here: there’s a CSS property for it and everything. Just turn on “text-align: justify” and...
Nightmare! The interword spacing on that first line is almost as wide as the indentation!
Reader, I’m afraid that your web browser is simply too dumb. That’s not the browser’s fault: robust algorithms for justifying text without creating these distractingly huge gaps between words have existed for many decades, and modern computers are powerful enough to run them in real time with little performance impact. It’s just, uh—nobody has ever bothered to implement them into web browsers. It is the damnedest thing.
I tried, I really did. You can mitigate this problem a bit if you enable automatic hyphenation, but browsers are unfortunately also kind of dumb at hyphenating. Firefox, for example, will refuse to hyphenate any word containing a capital letter, so any sentence with a lot of proper nouns in it is a lost cause. I tried manually inserting soft hyphens with a text preprocessor I wrote myself, but still these overjustified lines plagued me: when the text column narrows, for example on a phone, even hyphens can’t save you. The line-breaking algorithm is simply too naïve to optimize for well-justified text, and that’s not something you can fix as a web developer.
As a result, my heavy-hearted recommendation is to never use text justification. It’s just too distracting.
6. And then some extra stuff just for me
I added drop-caps because it looks neat and I made the ellipses spacier because I think it looks good when it, uh, when they are spacier. I think that looks pretty good that’s just my opinion though.
That’s all! Hope you learned something bye!!!

(im back, christmas break is here!!)
tw: mentions of abuse, violence, sexism (but secondary gender), omegaverse dynamics, crying, heavy angst no aftercare (again)
The uncomfortable tension in the room was palpable as they all sat in their usual debriefing room. Usually, the nest was a place for such a personal and volatile topic such as this, but none of them felt worthy of being there now. Not with how they’d treated you.
Soap was tapping his foot against the floor, the pattern uneven and sporadic, until Gaz snapped at him.
“Could you quit it, mate?” It had come out harsher than he’d meant. Soap huffed through his nose but obliged. They were all tense and on edge, their usually oh-so-controlled scents now sour and bitter with unease and anxiety.
In the field, they had their skills and weapons to fix problems, to take out the enemy. But here, back home? They had absolutely nothing in this fight. No amount of backup or fights could win this for them. In this fight, they were the enemy, and the only way to win this was by fixing the sacred little strand keeping you together that they had so carelessly unwound until it had snapped.
Ghost looked to Price. His hand was in his beard, thoughtfully running through the hair, stressed as Ghost has ever seen him. A sour pang of guilt shot through him. If he hadn’t tried forcing you to his scent gland, then you wouldn’t be in this position, and he wouldn’t have messed everything up, again—
“Y’re thinking too much.”
Price muttered, Simon’s feelings clear through the thick scent that somehow seemed to overpower everyone else’s in the air. He swallowed thickly. They needed a plan of action, some way to fix this, and the only way Price saw things being mended was by a lot of time and effort.
Gaz let the silence simmer for a moment, before speaking up.
“Cane Baker Syndrome, I looked it up yesterday night, it’s just like the med’ said. PTSD. Do you think…?”
An alpha being abused wasn’t as commonplace as it had used to be. Only 50 years ago, if you’d stepped into the common era, you’d see alpha’s being forced to work for a family they’d been forced into providing, their protective instincts abused. Among the more insane practices had been scratching out an alpha’s scent gland, so they couldn’t scent or get attached to their offspring, meaning the omega got the child all to themselves.
Awful things such as that had been outlawed years ago, but still happened in little forgotten corners of the world where loopholes existed.
“We can’t know for sure, but based on their reaction, I’d say we have a safe assumption. When they’re in a better….state of mind, we can ask a few questions.”
Price answered, voice heavy with an edge of guilt that seemed to grow richer by the second. Soap’s incessant tapping started up again, anxiety clearly chewing away at him. He couldn’t defuse you or the situation they’d created so easily like any other bomb he might during a mission.
“Could we get a background check on them?”
He asked, a hint of desperation in his tone. All he wanted was for you to be better again, for things to go back to normal, for a second chance.
But as they all split up, and he went to the nest, usually all so warm and comfortable and smelling of their sweet, rich scents combined, all he found was isolation among his team, sour scents mingling with rotten ones, a few sniffles and the salty scent of tears, he knew one thing.
They’d made their bed. Now they had to lie in it.
(sorry for the short part I’ve been playing cod bo6 multiplayer a lot and I’m kinda addicted + depressive episode, but there’ll be more soon I promise!!)
