Can You Learn to Sew Online? A Comprehensive Look at Your Options with ONSA
At ONSA - Online Sewing Academy, the world of stitching and garment construction should be accessible to everyone, regardless of location or schedule. In today's digital age, online learning has revolutionized how we acquire new skills, making it possible to master intricate crafts like sewing from the comfort of our homes. But can you truly become an expert stitcher through virtual classes alone? Let's explore the options available and how ONSA empowers you to embark on an enriching sewing journey.
The Beauty of Pre-Recorded Video Lessons
Ah, the world of pre-recorded tutorials - a treasure trove of knowledge at your fingertips! ONSA's extensive library of meticulously crafted video lessons offers a comprehensive exploration of sewing techniques, from the fundamentals of threading a needle to the intricacies of advanced garment construction. One of the most significant advantages of this format is the ability to learn at your own pace, rewinding and revisiting lessons as many times as needed until each stitch and seam becomes second nature.
Our pre-recorded videos are thoughtfully designed to cater to diverse learning styles, combining visual demonstrations with clear, concise explanations. Whether you're a visual learner who thrives on observing each step or an auditory learner who appreciates detailed verbal guidance, our lessons ensure that no aspect of the sewing process is left unexplained.
While budget-friendly and convenient, we understand that pre-recorded content may lack the human interaction that many pupils crave – the ability to ask questions, receive real-time feedback, and benefit from the personalized attention of an experienced instructor. This is where our live, interactive classes come into play.
The Magic of Live, Interactive Classes
Imagine having a seasoned ONSA instructor by your virtual side, guiding you through the intricate sewing world with patience and expertise. Our live, online classes provide an immersive, interactive experience replicating the intimacy of a physical classroom setting. Through video conferencing technology, you can follow along with your instructor, ask questions as they arise, and receive real-time feedback on your technique.
One of the most significant advantages of live classes at ONSA is the ability to learn at a pace that suits your individual needs. Our instructors are adept at adapting their teaching methods to accommodate varying skill levels, ensuring that every student feels included and supported. Whether you're a complete novice taking your first tentative stitches or a skilled stitcher seeking to elevate your art, our talented teachers can customize lesson plans to align with your unique goals and aspirations.
From mastering the art of inserting invisible zippers to acquiring advanced draping skills for haute couture designs, our live classes cover various topics, catering to hobbyists and aspiring professionals. Private one-on-one sessions and small group workshops provide ample opportunity for personalized guidance, fostering an environment where questions are welcomed, and challenges are addressed with patience and expertise.
The ONSA Edge: A Holistic Approach to Sewing Education
At ONSA, we understand that sewing is more than just a practical skill – it's an art form that combines technical precision with creative expression. Our approach to online sewing education is rooted in this philosophy, nurturing both the technical and artistic aspects of this timeless craft.
Our team of expert instructors, each with years of industry experience and a passion for teaching, has thoughtfully crafted a multifaceted curriculum that covers the entire spectrum of sewing, from understanding fabric properties and pattern drafting to mastering advanced construction techniques and exploring fashion design principles.
By combining our comprehensive library of pre-recorded video resources with live, interactive sessions, ONSA provides a 360-degree learning experience tailored to your schedule, skillset, and aspirations. Whether you prefer the convenience of self-paced learning or thrive on the dynamic energy of a virtual classroom, our blend of educational formats ensures that your sewing journey is enriching, engaging, and tailored to your unique needs.
Beyond the technical aspects of sewing, ONSA also emphasizes the importance of nurturing creativity and self-expression. Our lessons encourage students to experiment with fabric choices, color combinations, and design elements, fostering an environment where individuality is celebrated and personal style is cultivated.

At ONSA, we firmly believe that sewing mastery is a lifelong pursuit, a continuous learning and refinement journey. Our online academy is designed to support you at every stage of this journey, from your first tentative stitches to the creation of intricate, couture-worthy garments.
As you progress through our curriculum, you can participate in virtual sewing circles, where you can connect with fellow stitchers, share your creations, and seek inspiration from a community of like-minded individuals. Our instructors are not just teachers but mentors dedicated to your growth and success, offering guidance and encouragement every step of the way.

Why do people assume that kids can't be passionate about things?
Every time I see a video on instagram of a kid being passionate about something or good at something, the comments are full of people going "😢how sad, just let the kid be a kid😢"
Like, that kid is having the time of their life or is a fucking Oscar worthy actor.
Kids can have hobbies, kids can be good at things, and kids can care about things. And the fact that you don't think so tells me you don't know many kids.
And like, the conversation around kids on social media and the exploitation of kids on social media is a valid discussion to have, but it doesn't mean every kid with a passion is being forced into it.
#this was specifically inspired by max alexander#who if you dont know#hold the world record for being the youngest runway fashion designer#hes 8#and his instagram is full of videos of him sewing and designing#or showing off his designs#etc.#his parents said when he was 4 he announced that he was a dress maker and needed a mannequin#so his mom made him a makeshift cardboard mannequin and he started learning to sew#and he loved it and is very good at it#they started his Instagram account as a way to show friends and family what he was doing during lockdown#and he went viral#his mom has said they're still figuring out how to balance that#and that they're very careful with him online#and about how much time hes allowed to spend sewing and whatnot#so that it doesnt interfere with school#this is not a kid being forced to do something he doesnt want to do#hes just very good at something amd cares a lot about it#and got incredibly lucky#leave him alone

Scrimbly Jacqueline 47/52: Every day Elle WAKES UP ready to unleash meme hell on Jacqueline, and Jacqueline is never ready.
Remember when everyone was drawing their ocs/blorbos a la this image:
That's where this came from lol. I forget if it was me or Ana who went "THE GIRLIES" or if perhaps this was an errant Dani thought that got tucked away? Regardless this isn't my first attempt at drawing the girlies like this...

It sucks so bad that having "traditionalist values" has gotta be code for being a stupid piece of shit cunt that sucks ass to be around instead of meaning, like. "I don't think I should have to download an app to do something I could easily do in my browser," or "I think everyone that has the dexterity to sew should try & learn to mend." Real missed opportunity, there.
#em.txt#yeah or like. if you are capable of it you should learn to make a couple of dishes#even something as simple as learning to fry an egg & make instant potatoes is enough in a pinch#etc etc. it sucks that it doesn't mean 'modern problems are sometimes caused by losing older solutions'#& instead it means 'i don't want there to be anyone that isn't a copy-cut-out of me to get to exist in this world'#also like. I don't think people who like. download an app bc it's easier or toss their clothes bc they can't sew#or eats all their meals frozen or from an eatery are bad people#most of that is planned obsolescence -- home ec was cut. many people didn't get to learn to sew or cook#& companies intentionally truncate their online services so you need to download an app so they can steal more date from you#i just think like. the feeling of chopping a vegetable or looking at my shitty stitching jobs#or when I don't download a stupid piece of shir bloatware app that sucks up all the info it can about me#i think all those things are pretty cool.#okaii bye

in theory there is a series of next classes on sewing machine use to take, featuring instructions on various techniques
but as far as i can tell learning to assemble a tote bag has taught me everything i need to assemble drawstring project bags, which is what i actually got into this to learn to make in the first place
so im just going to book sewing machine time for next week, pre-cut some fabric i already have at home according to a drawstring bag pattern i found, and just. try making things?
#the place where i took the class lets u rent sewing machine time so i. am just going to go for it#i like taking classes when im a complete beginner but for crafts i very quickly move to the stage where i would like to try generalizing#through a combination of Looking Online and Trying Stuff. and will come back for more direct instruction once i am truly stymied on a parti#ular skill or technique. i took one knitting class when i was 9 to make sure i could form stitches the right way round and otherwise am#committed to just finding stuff online and trying it and it always works out. and i feel this should work the same way.#box opener#feel free to recommend other things that i should feel ready to just try given that i have 'can sew a simple tote bag' capacities#is it too bold to make a run at an unlined pair of drawstring shorts? i have some to use as a model! does it definitely need elastic?? will#that be hard??? can i definitely not learn it from blogs do you think. because if i can im gonna

im not only planning out which monster high dolls i can get without taking out a loan but also eyeing a g3 cleo doll as a potential cuztomization project..... we could see a Sal Real in the next five years....
#ignore me#only problem is shes got WAY more hips than sal#my girlie is flat as a board <3#and i'd have to bulk out her nose and probably dye the hair black and then style it...#i watch a lotta dollightful and she does waaaaay more to her dolls than im planning#which kind of like. puts it perspective a little. much simpler than the dragons for example#even simpler than her typical faceup cos i ain't doin all that#i saw someone on twitter do a really simple custom on clawdeen and i was like oh! oh it can just be that easy#i... may have to learn to sew. but i imagine there are patterns online i could poke around for#model paints for the face maybe...#cleo's got the arm wraps molded onto the right arm which is so perfect#so like ideally i'd have her clothes be removable but that's a Lot for a newbie#WE'LL SEE!!! i don't even have the doll yet i'm just Plotting

over the past few days I've switched from watching lots of cleaning videos (which was good because they made me want to clean - though that effect is still there for now) to sewing videos (which is very very bad because now I want to sew more and get a sewing machine that actually works right (I got mine used for like 50€ and it's very basic and a lot of things just keep breaking/not working (which is probably at least in part because I don't know enough about using it correctly)))
#I'm not good at sewing#I don't know what I'm doing at all#but it's sooo much fun (until my stupid sewing machine breaks and I have to spend the rest of the day figuring that out)#I really want to learn how to make clothes and stuff but I won't even try with this sewing machine#now to be clear it's an alright sewing machine and it mostly works fine if you just want to sew a straight line on thin non-stretchy#fabric and never change the yarn.#*thread (I keep mixing those up because they're the same word in German so it's very confusing)#but anything even slightly more complicated or anything with thicker fabric does not work. I've tried so many needles and settings and#solutions I found online#and it just never works consistently#I'm not spending money to get it fixed professionally. no matter how little it would cost it's not worth it#unfortunately I've already found a beginner computer sewing machine and it's expensive (though much less expensive than I would have#thought) and I don't know if I'll be able to get it anytime soon but I really want it 😔😔😔#but ugh the thought of not having to thread the needle anymore and not putting the bobbin in in the front and fixing all the problems that#come with that is sooo nice#oh yeah my machine also refuses to work with thicker/stronger thread. I've figured out that it does work most of the time if it's just the#bobbin thread.#but like. I don't want to spend hours learning how to fix this stupid machine all the time! I want to learn how to use it to sew!#so yeah this isn't going to work long term.#ugh my dad's ex (the most awful person I've ever met) was a trained seamstress. damn I should have made her teach me 😔 then she would've#been good for something at least instead of just giving me a bunch of additional trauma 🙃#(but yay at least it seems like I finally don't associate sewing with her and feel terrified just thinking about it anymore!)#personal

i can't stand people who are like "if you want cool/cute whatever aesthetic clothes, just go to the thrift store or shops that sell by the pound and you'll find something (((:"
like yeah sure totally great advice! as long as you're under a size XL because none of those places ever have anything fucking decent in bigger sizes lmao
#like it's all ugly ass old church clothes nothing fun#and i do not have skills money or desire to learn to sew bc I shouldn't have to!!! i want to find this shit in stores like everyone else#and if there IS anything plus size and cute the fucking depop girlies are gonna snatch it up and resell it as “oversized” and overpriced#shut up moosh.vnt#and im not breaking the bank for a fucking pair of pants or a shirt fuck outta here with those $75 price tags @ online trendy stores

Aaaaand that's why I prefer charts tonwritten patterns. Itxs so much easier when you can just see what you're supposed to do. Also makes counting way easier, becaude you can just look at where you're supposed to be in the pattern instead of doing calculus in your head
Novice sewing pattern: Cut out shapes. Line up the little triangles on the edges. Stitch edges together. We've also included step-by-step assembly instructions with illustrations.
Novice knitting pattern: yOU MUSt uNDerstANd thE SECret cOdE CO67 (73, 87, 93) BO44 (63, 76, 90) 28 (32, 34) slip first pw repeat 7x K to end *kl (pl) 42 * until 13" (13, 13, 15) join new at 30 pl for 17 rows ssk 27 k2tog mattress lengthwise BO and sacrifice a goat to the knitting gods. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WANT "INSTRUCTIONS," I JUST GAVE THEM TO YOU
#knitting#no it's not a real pattern but I can't write one that makes sense because I have no freaking clue what any of that means#they're so right#How do you make things that aren't basic rectangles#Why has every knitter I've asked for help just said 'patterns are easy; you just have to know how to read them' & then refused to teach me#Where do I even find a goat to sacrifice#How do I join the pattern cult#I am so confused#I've been knitting for almost a decade but I can only make scarves and potholders#I learned one (1) stitch by watching a YouTube video and none of my friends or family knit so I have no IRL resources#And nobody I meet seems to want to take the time to explain the rest to me#I taught myself to sew through trial and error but that doesn't really work with knitting because error is pretty much just... Unraveling?#Anyway sorry for the tag rant I'm just frustrated that I see pretty things I want to make but the instructions are in an alien language#And the gap between 'absolute novice' and 'intermediate' seems to be about 20 years of experience and formal instruction#<- prev#i'm so glad my mom taught me the basiscs when i was like five#25 years of experience baby#also thank god for online tutorials#knitting is hell when you're just trying to learn
