I’m finally caught up on Till the End of the Moon (up to ep 24), and before everything goes to hell--something both that I’m looking forward to and that fills me with dread --I have some Susu thoughts. Yes, she’s done some dumb things to put herself in the situation in which she now finds herself (I haven’t read the novel, though it sounds like that’s in part an adaptation issue), but also, her situation was already fully impossible. A big part of that is because of how many versions of Tantai Jin she holds inside her head and her conflicting relationships with all of those different versions that this scene so beautifully invoked:

Anyway, I’m kind of obsessed with Susu, so here’s a character analysis that literally no one asked for. 

The first version of Tantai Jin Susu knows is the Devil God that not only essentially ended the world (stakes almost too big to wrap your brain around) but also killed all of her family and friends in front of her (more personal stakes). He also nearly killed her--she viscerally remembers both the feeling of his hand around her throat and the look in his eyes when he did. No matter what the past version of Tantai Jin does, that version came first and can pop up in her brain at literally any moment, especially as he gains power and becomes more of a potential threat. That leads to the first version of Susu that has to exist: the version that needs to prevent his rise as the Devil God at any cost. Her sect died to send her back in time and give her that chance. She cannot afford to forget her mission.

The second version of Tantai Jin Susu knows is Tantai Jin as how he is when she arrives in the past. He starts out as a poor, abused little mew mew, and Susu pretty quickly finds herself unable to punish Tantai Jin for his future crimes. She’s not even very good at being mean to him. At the same time, she needs to stop him from dying before she figures out how to deal with the whole evil bone situation. This Tantai Jin leads to the next layer of Susu’s relationship with Tantai Jin: she needs to keep him alive and, on the off chance that it’ll prevent him from becoming the Devil God, be nice to him, too. Since no one has cared whether Tantai Jin lives or dies before, or if they did probably preferred him dead, that little bit of kindness and care fully knock Tantai Jin off balance. And that leads to the first time Susu lies to Tantai Jin that she wants to protect him because she loves him, which is where their relationship starts to get messy. 

Then, plot things happens, Susu disappears for a few months, and when gets back, she meets essentially the third version of Tantai Jin: Tantai Jin has somehow become king of a whole ass country while she was gone, is fighting a war against her new “home” country, and has started using his demonic powers in a pretty big way. Yes, Tantai Jin is actually a pretty good ruler, but Susu remembers a version of him that’s capable of wiping out the entire world. His newfound access to power puts her on edge. She’s constantly afraid he’ll misuse it.

She also knows now what she needs to do in order to get rid of his evil bone: she has to make him fall in love with her in order to get the weapon that she needs to kill him (at least I think it’ll kill him, I’m a little unclear there--stabbing him in the heart with nine nails seems at least fairly unpleasant). So she embarks on the third and fourth versions of her relationship with Tantai Jin simultaneously: a growing loving, romantic relationship that she has to do a good enough job developing to get what she needs to utterly betray him. 

The thing is, Susu isn’t that good of an actress. As she does all the things she thinks she needs to do to get Tantai Jin to fall in love with her (shout out to our romance advice queen Pian Ran), she also falls for him. She also knows that Tantai Jin’s love for her is entirely real because every time his love for her grows, she gets another nail. He’s not faking it. He’s telling her the truth. To keep going, she has to lie to herself convincingly enough to imagine a future with him in which he’s a good person and they love each other, and do all the things she needs to do to bring that future into being. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be able to manage it. But she also has to be ready to destroy that imaginary future that feels more and more real to her as her relationship to Tantai Jin grows in order to prevent the worse future, the end-of-the-world future, from happening (or so she thinks). To do that, she has to be prepared to break his heart. And if she admits to herself that she loves him and she’s not just pretending for the mission, then she has to be prepared to break her own heart as well to do it. 

So, as things stand now: Susu hates, loves, fears, wants to protect, and has to kill Tantai Jin, all at the same time. It’s a wonder she’s not more of a mess. 

Also, I haven’t read the novel, but if/when Susu betrays Tantai Jin, not only will he have to deal with the immediate betrayal of the stabbing, if he ever finds out that she came back in time *solely* to stop him and that her love was all a ruse from the very beginning, it really is going to be the betrayal to end all betrayals. Should be fun.

Costume Cdramas I watched in 2023

My 2nd year with Chinese dramas as my love for costume drama continues.

The Blood of Youth (40 x 45min, filming started in Oct 2021, released Dec 2022) fun action drama with a good dose of comedy, not for people who want lots of romance because they are too busy (and the canon couples don't have enough chemistry, there I said it) to be making out. Good for bromance, ghost ships and/or ace character head canons. Xiao Se's fur collar wins fur collar of the year, Tang Lian is my blorbo of early 2023.

My Uncanny Destiny (24 x 30min, filmed in autumn 2021, released Jan 2023) My favorite comedy of the year. Don't get turned off by the toilet jokes, it's a gem that spoofs drama tropes, gives you a coherent plot, silliness, fun side characters, a ML that is not afraid of being silly and a FL that plays capable and silly well. This might be a low budget production but they put that money to work. Politics, cross-dressing, found family, sisterhood, enemies to lovers, third wheel bisexual who reminds me of Wen Kexing, over the top villain, himbo villain who works out shirtless all the time, it got it all.

Wulin Heroes (22 x 45min, filming started Nov 2020, released Jan 2023) I watched this for Li Hongyi and he is incredibly beautiful in this so props to his stylist and cinematographer. BUT it is a badly written and edited low budget romp. If you are not watching for any actor then do not bother. FL is bearable once you realize she is very much of a lets see where this goes kind of character. 2nd ML is a suffering captive prince turned whiny regent played by Zhu Zanjin. So if you want to see Jin GuangYao suffer, you might like his scenes?? It can totally be read as a throuple especially with the New Tales of Wulin Heroes mini series add on. The choppiness might also be a result of the dangai ban??

No Doubt in us (24 x 14min, 2021, donghua) saw this on netflix and it roped me in with the body switch trope. It's sufficiently entertaining. Though I didn't enjoy the animation style apart from the chibi scenes.)

Heaven Official's Blessing (season 1, 11 x 26min, 2020, Donghua) It's THAT story and the art style is so pretty. I haven't read the books yet but still got what was going on most of the time. Liked it a lot. Haven't watched the 2nd season yet)

The Journey of Chong Zi (40 x 45min, filming started in June 2021, released Feb 2023) This xianxia is a mess! But it gave Scorpion King Li Daikun another memorable role with being the FL's protector. Watching Wang Zhoucheng having a ball with his role was fun. Immortal turned demon Wan Jie is so handsome and tragic. It did draw me in but the main couple is just ick so every time they were apart it immediately got better. ML's refusal to take the antidote to ease his obsession was lmao, FL is naive but charming and her demon styling rocks (do not get the hate on the actress, she is selfmade and there are many bad pretty face actresses around but I guess antis attract antis). Oh and there is a bromance between two of Chong Zi's harem members

Till the End of the Moon (40 x 55min, started filming in Nov 2021, released April 2023) aka my brain rot drama of the year. Drawn in from episode 1 on. Bai Li and Luo Yunxi <3 Pian Ran, Ye Qingyu, Nian Baiyu and Si Ying. <3 I was spamming tumblr with my screenshots, it was a jolly good time to watch this epic tale of love and suffering and saving the world dilemma with a great cast, characters, costumes, sets and soundtrack with the cdrama ppl of tumblr. If this weren't too complicated for cdrama newbies I'd recommend it to all my friends. Do not skip the dream arc (I ended up liking it) or later stuff will make less sense. I'm still annoyed that we didn't get a good extra episode that wraps up some lose ends for the main side characters and that reunion of the main characters but Youku really went nah we better play it safe with censors not liking happy ends for morally grey characters.

My Queen (24 x 45min, filmed in 2020, released Jul 2021) An FL enters a romance adventure VR game drama that I watched because I needed some fluff between TtEotM episodes. Why pick this among any other sufficiently entertaining dramas that are probably better written and not as forgetable? Because I wanted to watch Hu Wei (rich nepo baby in The Blood of Youth) in another comedy role >_> and ridiculous overacting he did deliver

The Trust (30 x 45min, filmed early 2021, released Apr 2023) The life action adaptation of the manhua No doubt in us is based on. I dunno why I finished this, I guess I'm not a quitter and needed silly stuff to balance TtEotM angst. For some reason the director thought it would be a good idea to film this like a donghua and it is causing 2nd hand embarrassment. The ML cannot pull off being a woman in a man's body, not even a martial arts nerd like Xu Yu. Like Wulin Heroes it was filmed before the dangai ban but that didn't stop them from having at least two bromances.

Wanru's Journey (24 x 35min, filming started in Jun 2021, released May 2023) A mess. So IQIYI released this simply to ride on the wave of Ao Ruipeng's The Blood of Youth popularity. Because this got so chopped down because of the dangai ban and it probably wasn't good to begin with. Basically an actress transmigrates into a dangai screenplay and gets between the leads while also making money by writing fic about them (ok this is my reading but she DID release fic and drawings of them). Of course it takes an unnecessarily dramatic turn, instead of staying on the comedy side, cannot remember more of the plot, oops.

King is not Easy (20ep x 30min, released Aug 2017) I watched this for the body switch trope and Bai Lu. Nice to see her actual face before the fair skin filter got her, entertaining enough, badly written silly comedy with mind mindbogglingly contrived final 4 episodes. It's Bai Lu's drama debut so it's nice to see how far she got

Destined (40ep x 45min, filming started in Jun 2022, released June 2023) Highly enjoyable. Fell in love with Bai Jingting. What's not to love about a playboy getting put on his path by his wife and them becoming friends, sworn siblings and then lovers in the process? No this is actually about FL finding her thing (trade) and being wildly successful at it, then it's also political, revenge and more. The leads are extremely charming and have great chemistry (the drama suffers every time they are apart lbr) and the writing is good, though people are too perfect and I wasn't into the whole palace stuff.

My Journey to You (24 ep x 60min, filming started Dec 2022, released Sep 2023) Had me from episode 1 on. Made me buy IQIYI VIP so I can watch it in good quality. Fell in love with Zhang Linghe. Yu Shuxin needs to do all the wuxia while she is still fit. Why waste being able to do the splits on some modern drama? The director sent her mud wrestling and she went for it. Everyone knows she is pretty no need for her to be beautifully put together on screen 24/7. Love the style, the character introductions, the characters, the cast, the chemistry, the story, the way you expect something and something else is going on. While it started out gloomy and remained so for the most part, it surprised me with throwing in more comedy than I expected. The good old idle manchild gets thrown into a position of power story but it's a murderous martial arts clan against another murderous martial arts clan. It's giving you some information but often just enough for getting what's going on just to play with your expectations later, FUN! And I didn't even mention all the other characters because surprise! this is actually an ensemble drama with several intriguing characters. Do not expect for the two leads to be on screen all the time.

Hilarious Family (24ep x 45min, started filming in June 2022 (?), released Sept 2023) A fun ensemble comedy I watched for Jackie Li. A widow moves to another city to marry off her 4 daughters (a silly man-crazy one, a homely one, a scholar one and a tomboy one). No it's not Pride and Prejudice but yes of course this is a romcom and all women have a love interest. It kind of drops off later on tbh, but still good for the characters and side characters. The success of this in China hopefully means that Jackie Li will get to be getting more comedies to work in after the Queen Lau disaster and people having a problem with her artist alias in 2022.

Hello There (20ep x 30min, released Jan 2023) I stumbled on this on IQIYI while looking for a light fast watch that will let my brain relax. The ML's best acting moment is when he plays a wooden robot. FL is fun. There are some questionable scenes, standard low budget action comedy fare.

An Ancient Love Song (14ep x 30 min, released June 2023) A wonderfully written and executed grown up time traveling story, that shows once again that you don't need a big budget to tell a story that draws you in. Ended my palace politics blockade. All this time traveling and no reincarnation in sight. ;_;

Story of Kunning Palace (38ep x 45min, filming started in May 2022, released Nov 2023) Tieing 2nd with My Journey to You for brainrot drama of the year. The cinematography is questionable, the story is not for teaching perfect courting behavior but those two are just such a good cp in their awkward messy way. Their friends/sidekicks are fun too and bring some comedy to that story though crazy in love ML is serving some comedy too. Props to ZLH for actually trying to grasp the basics of playing qin and not just waving over the strings like other dramas deem it sufficient. Bai Lu is Bai Lu-ing, gathering her harem. Coming into this right after An Ancient Love Song the idea to defeat destiny this time around seemed hopeless to me but this is one of those they are good at making plans and they turn out mostly alright dramas. I hope those two's material for the next years is as good as the two dramas with them I watched in 2023, fingers crossed!

Currently watching: A Journey to Love and Taoism Grandmaster as well as 2/3 through a LbFaD rewatch that I started in summer.

I also watched a handful of modern dramas (made in Korea and Japan) and some mini-dramas, but that is for another post.

And yes my most watched actors are probably those uncles stuck in Hengdian, might look that up another day.

there's a lot of sonic cd dna in NiGHTS into dreams i feel

-both games were directed by naoto ohshima -both games get better the better you get at the game and the more you memorize level layouts on repeated playthroughs -kazuyuki hoshino character designs -naofumi hatatya worked on both soundtracks -a lot of effort put into things most players won't notice their first time playing (cd's 4 time periods for each act 1 and 2 of the game/each level in nights having 4 music tracks depending on the mood of the nightopians, and also nightopian and king pian mechanics in general) -the pian towers, the designs of twin seeds city and some promotional art you can see direct connections to sonic cd's art direction

On TTEOTM and That Ending

OI ok so I’m overall glad I finished watching Till the End of the Moon. I felt like Susu got her brain back. Overall I’m not terribly unhappy with the way the last ep went, except that the last 10 or so minutes were horribly smushed together.

I do agree that it was frustrating that he took away her agency (her becoming a god, her choosing to die with him, etc.) It’s something in so many CDramas... but I also appreciate that she wound up in that place through a lot of her own choices - to believe in him, to demand answers, and to ultimately choose the heartless way, and then to believe in him again.

The ending in the tombs was a bit confusing at first, but I felt it was fairly obvious when we saw TTJ enter in the devil robes, choose to carve his name as an immortal, and then leave wearing red again. He was telling Susu that he meant to die, and was ok with it, but would (in a strange way) always be with her. Also I think it somewhat served as an explanation for why he was unwilling to let her die - he’d seen her die once and her tomb was already there. Anyway this bit had me crying.

The 500 years later did not answer what I wanted it to answer. I saw another post that explained the last shot of TTJ was him in the heart-guarding scale, so I guess that makes this an OE since his divine essence and memory are preserved. Plus Susu’s a goddess, she can cultivate him till he pops out.

My biggest gripe is - did we get resolutions for literally anyone else? They finally show us Ye Qingyu is the king of 500 years (which we already knew). So uh what happens after? His hair goes white? Maybe he dies? Any hope for Pian Ran? Her death scene was so brief and unsatisfying I was sure they would bring her back. What about Nian Baiyu? The last time we saw him wasn’t he waking up somewhere all confused? Gongye Jiwu/Xiao Lin - I mean I could talk about a character just completely doing a 180 that makes no sense, but I don’t think it needs to be said. I guess between Susu surviving and GYJW remembering how TTJ un-devilized him, TTJ’s name would be cleared. And assuming Mo Nv, having saved GYJW, and having not been convicted of murdering a clan leader (honestly her only good move in the whole show), would join him in his newly guilt-ridden immortal life?

No idea if we really are getting a special episode or audio but hopefully some of this is resolved.

Till the End of the Moon - Episode 11

When Susu comes back from the Huangyuan, it’s already been three months since war has started between Sheng and Jing. Ye Qingyu is meeting up with Tantai Jin that tries to make him switch sides, arguing that his king is trying to get rid of the Ye family, deeming it is too powerful. I mean, it makes sense, if the general of your armies is too powerful, it could be threat to your own power. So will Ye Qingyu agree and save people’s lives or not?

Tantai Jin manages to convince Ye Qingyu to order retreat with his arguments that it might hurt his family, but it will spare the lives of many innocents.  Tantai Jin sends some people to take the Ye family to Jing, were they won’t be hurt. This probably doesn’t include his elder sister, since she’s now married to the prince. Also, Tantai Jin wants to unite all the countries so there won’t be anymore need for war. Isn’t conquest some sort of war too? Ye Qingyu asks about Ye Xiwu, but Tantai Jin says he has no news of her since she left months ago.

Susu leaves the little girl with a new family and gives her new name, so no one will find her as Lan An’s daughter.

The king is really angry that everyone from the Ye family disappear. He send the 6th prince to the front, but promises not hurt his wife. She’s being bullied by the people in town, because she comes from the Ye family. Xiao Lin wants to let her stay in the capital, but she begs to go with him. He finally agrees to bring her on the battlefield and to protect her. This girl is really annoying. She’s pretty useless. Anyways.

This is going to be a short recap it seems. Tantai Jin needs to absorb more power so Pian Ran tracks a monster for him down the Mo river. One their way to retrieve the dragon sleep below the waters, Susu intercepts him first after talking to her brother. When she’s about to get caught by Tantai Jin’s soldiers, she’s saved by Xiao Lin and Master Pang. Tantai Jin tries to convince Xiao Lin to side with him, but he knows they can’t work alongside and admits that they can only be ennemies. Xiao Lin says he’ll stop him right there. They wake up the dragon. The animation on this is pretty bad. It looks like a plastic toy. Intricate toy, but still a toy.

Stupid Bingchang followed her husband. Meanwhile we learn that this dragon is on the verge of either becoming a god or a demon. He’s right in a dream. To stop him from becoming a demon, it should awaken. Susu jumps into his purple eye to try and awaken him. To be honest, this is the first time I think she isn’t being smart. She knows the first key is a dream. Anyone else thinking right away that this could be related to the first key to break the evil bone? She only thinks that this could be the beginning of everything and jumps in without thinking further ahead. Tantai Jin gets in too. Then Xiao Lin. And then Bingchang falls carelessly and ends inside too. Once in the dream, they won’t remember who they are.

In the dream, Susu is reincarnated as the sister of Xiao Lin and is the princess of a water tribe. She’s admiring Tantai Jin, now reincarnated as the god of war while he fights against the demon lord. Bingchang seems to be Tantai Jin’s wife. I’m not going to explain any more than that, it was mostly Tantai Jin defeating everyone because he’s super badass in all versions of himself it seems.

That’s going to be it for today, hope you enjoyed this shorter recap. I’m trying to got straight to the point and only mention important part of the story, it’s taking less time to actually watch the episodes and also this drama is quite complicated with all the different characters and sub plotlines so I feel it’s easier for everyone if I skip some details and focus on the main events.

Okay I'm gonna sound unintelligible for a moment: NiGHTS Journey of Dreams is one of my fucking crack addict games on the Wii that is just THAT MUCH of a pain in the ass to beat. Like Sonic Colors? After I played Sonic Forces push over. Footwork. Easy. NiGHTS? THE MORE DELULU YOU ARE THE BETTER YOU BECOME TYPE SHIT. And oh what's this? A hot ass edgy sibling who is still sucking up to the toxic father being that's a god? YES PLEASE! I kid you not me and my sis couldn't have a better self comparison if we wanted as children. Even to this day we joke she's Reala and I'm NiGHTS. We held no bars nor movement on that for years. We were like 9 and 10 when we got the game. IT IS STILL KICKING OUR ASSES AND WE ARE STILL LEARNING SHIT ABOUT IT. Like how if you have one successful file it will slowly delete the data of the OTHER file.

I also learned it has a Chao like system, do you know how fucking creepy the child of a nightopian and a nightmare is? I can tell ya as someone who never saw them before until I did: ENOUGH TO MAKE WIZEMAN CRY!! They are called Mepians and there's a 1/4 chance of two Mepians of different Nightmarens body parts, yes you read that right, for them to give birth to a King Pian. A King Pian is a rare level addition that will make you play and fend off Nightmarens 10 times to build a castle.

Oh and don't get me STARTED on the Dream Drops. There are 60 of these gilded almost piss yellow looking fuckers I have to find to ENSURE NiGHTS won't die with Wizeman post game. Why do I know this without beating the game first? My hope was so low I thought I would NEVER beat the game. Yes I was THAT BAD at the game. I almost gave da fuck up.

That said, I for the longest time only knew of Journey of Dreams. When I learned of the older title Into Dreams I took a look and went "DAMN TWO TITLES AND YOU HAD A GLOW UP IN THE SECOND ONLY FOR YOU TO BE CONSIDERED FORGOTTEN???" Like honestly if you look between the two models of the two games JoD is so much more cleaner and refined. Hell between the two character design wise JoD is better. I honestly wish I could recreate the outfits because MMMMMMMMMM

Anyways the I have therapy I will be DEEP in this childhood obsession that I honestly wish there were fan songs for because this is so awesome imo but yeah crack game the more sleep deprived you are the better you become type shit.

Vi racconto la SAGA DELL' ESILIO NEL PLIOCENE di Julian May

Julian May è un'autrice di fantascienza statunitense operante soprattutto negli anni '80 e '90, che collaborò tra gli altri con Marion Zimmer Bradley, con cui scrisse una serie dedicata ad un pubblico giovanile, ma le sue due opere maggiori, e di maggior successo a livello internazionale furono certamente la saga Esilio nel Pliocene e il suo sequel spin off la serie Milieu Galattico.

Entrambe le serie contano quattro romanzi ciascuna e sono un affascinante mix di fantascienza, elementi fantasy e romanzo storico.

L'ambientazione in un epoca remota come il Pliocene dà al luogo dell'azione una profondità storica che mi ha ricordato la saga di Ayla di Jean Marie Auel. Julian May descrive con cura e dovizia i luoghi e la geografia di quel periodo provando di aver fatto ricerche molto accurate. Inoltre alcune caratteristiche tipiche del popolo Fae date agli alieni Tanu dona quel tocco di fantasy a questo romanzo di fantascienza veramente innovativo e diverso dal solito e lo differenzia da i molti altri libri di fantascienza che parlano di umani o alieni con poteri mentali.

Trovo sia, soprattutto la prima, la serie dell'Esilio, una serie adatta a molti tipi di lettori diversi, a chi ama i romanzi storici, il fantasy o la fantascienza.
