I’ve decided how Batman meets Danny Phantom.
While connecting characters between DC and DP, I came across the DC villain Pariah, who shares a name with DP villain Pariah Dark. I’ve decided that these two are the same person and fighting him will bring Danny Phantom into contact with Batman, or at least get Danny onto his radar as someone to look into further.
But first, some backstory...
Since we don’t know much about Pariah Dark, other than being sealed away a long time ago, I’ll mostly be pulling his backstory from Kell Mossa, a scientist who accidentally brought his universe to Anti-Monitor’s attention and watched it be destroyed as the only survivor, renamed Pariah by his savior, Monitor (Anti-Monitor’s “good” twin brother). He involuntarily watched Anit-Monitor destroy several other universes, blaming himself for (supposedly) releasing Anti-Monitor, though he is later assured that Anti-Monitor was just doing what he had always done and Pariah had simply diverted his path of destruction. Pariah is dropped off in a random universe, where he tried to live a normal life, though he was constantly drawn to impending disasters that he had no hope of preventing, as no one heeded his warnings (like a mix of Pokemon’s Absol and Greek’s Cassandra); he was killed and revived a few times, only to eventually fall through the cracks of reality and driven insane. Instead of being found by Flash and sent to the “paradise world” called  Earth-Flash.1, Pariah became the first inhabitant of the newly formed Ghost Zone pocket dimension and declared himself the Ghost King, sometimes calling himself Pariah Dark. (He may or may not have connections to the cosmic Great Darkness, I haven’t decided)
Pariah decides to use the ghosts of the Ghost Zone to invade the living realm of Earth but now he needs a lieutenant he can trust...
After turning completely evil, Eclipso was replaced as the Wrath of God (yes, THAT God, cuz apparently He exists in DC) by Aztar, who instead calls himself the Vengeance of God, and is bound to a human host to keep him from turning evil like Eclipso did. He’s had many hosts over the millennia and his most recent host, James “Jim” Corrigan, had been the hero Spectre with Aztar since Jim’s “death” around 1940, but he was getting old and had chosen Detective Crispus Allen of the Gotham Police Department as his replacement in 2005. The ritual to transfer Aztar’s host was interrupted by Pariah Dark and Aztar was “recruited” as Pariah’s lieutenant, killing Jim and leaving Cris unpowered and in distress. Pariah convinces Aztar to join him by promising freedom to choose his own path rather than be tethered to some goodie-two-shoes human and Aztar accepts. Danny is called on to defeat Pariah by the ghosts that don’t want to serve the self-proclaimed King (most of whom end up being Danny’s various Rogues Gallery) and is thrust into leading the resistance; meanwhile Cris enlisted the help of Batman and the rest of the Batclan (and maybe some members of Justice League Dark), who join the resistance as well.
I’m thinking this will be the first big crisis Damian will participate in as Robin, though I’m not sure if I want Duke Thomas (Signal) to have been recruited yet or not; if he has been recruited already, he’s still in training and hasn’t become Signal yet. I’ll get my timeline ironed out for my next post.
Various other connections:
There is a Pandora in both continuities, so after she “accidentally” released the Crime Syndicate (evil JL) into this universe, she decided to move and found the new Ghost Zone to be acceptable, as the inhabitants amused her. She recognized the ectoplasm that saturated the pocket dimension as being related to the Fountain of Life but didn’t bother looking into it or telling anyone because she didn’t want to risk them ruining her fun. She let the Box Ghost steal her box and toyed with Danny before agreeing to help him retrieve it. She could probably take down Pariah on her own but that would be really hard and this resistance thing sounds like more fun than she’s had in ages anyways.
DC Cronus is more-or-less the same as the god from Greek mythology but has also been equated with Chronos, the Greek god of time. After Cronus was imprisoned in Tartarus by the Olympian Gods, Clockwork was given his duties as the God of Time by Hera, loosely working with the Quintessence’ Observants.
Speaking of, DP’s Observants seem to fulfill a similar role as DC’s Quintessence, so I’ve decided that the Quintessence are the gods in control but they employ the Observants to catalogue and categorize events for the Quintessence so they don’t have to do everything themselves. The Observants are the ones who decide what deserves the attention of the gods in charge. I’ll probably have the Quintessence decide the fate of the Ghost Zone after Pariah Dark is defeated.
The Guys in White are an obvious reference to the Men in Black. Looking up various government agencies in the DC Comics, the Bureau of Normalcy (formerly Bureau of Oddities) seems to serve a similar function, so I’ve decided that GiW and BoN are both departments of the larger Department of Extranormal Operations (DEO), where the GiW are specifically focused on eliminating threats from ghostly (and similarly paranormal) origins, while the BoN handles cover-ups and convincing the public that everything is “normal” and work both in the field and in cyber security. BoN people often accompany other agencies to run interference so the other agencies are able to do whatever they need to do without fear of being seen or regular people getting in the way. The GiW was beginning to investigate the uptick of paranormal activity in Amity Park and would have contacted SHADE if they ever discovered Danny Phantom was anything more than an ordinary ghost.
Other departments include Knightwatch (general military enforcement), the Suicide Squad (generally works with Knightwatch, enlisting the aid of established heroes and villains alike, the roster constantly changes), Squad K (which is specifically designed to take out Superman if he ever went rogue), the Super-Human Advanced Defense Executive or SHADE (focused on talent acquisition), Project Cadmus (technically Research and Development, but actually trying to clone heroes for SHADE), the Department of Metahuman Affairs or DMA (the public face of SHADE), and probably others I couldn’t find in my quick search.

Speaking of Infinity Inc, didn't half of those guys go evil or something (Northwind, Silver Scarab, Atom Smasher, Brainwave Jr., the aforementioned Obsidian, etc)? What was up with that team?
What a very rude way to phrase that when you're talking about people's trauma. I'm going to assume well meaning ignorance and answer this as professionally as possible.
First of all, as much as you might think otherwise from how I casually communicate. My profession doesn't like to throw around the term "evil" lightly. It's too easy. When we study supervillains or other extranormal criminals to simply label them "evil" is to at once dismiss their humanity and also let them off the hook for their actual motivations. Supervillains aren't evil. They're greedy, or bigoted, or arrogant. These are human beings. They make choices. Often not good ones but to ignore the root of the problem is to allow it to keep sprouting under our feet. The four people you cite. That is Norda Cantrell, Hector Hall, Albert Rothstein and Henry King Jr respectively, not counting Obsidian. 2 of them made choices that the majority (including me to be clear) disagree with and the other two were swept up in circumstances outside their control. The controversy surrounding 3 of these men has to do with, of course, the Kahndaqian Revolution and following Black Marvel Crisis.
Tumblr media
(A photograph taken from the body camera of a deceased Bialyan mercenary. Showing Cantrell, King and Rothstein on the right side alongside Black Adam, Eclipso and Nemesis)
I'm sure most people are familiar with the broad outline. The superhuman Black Adam engineers a violent revolution against Kahndaq's military dictator Asim Muhunnad with the unwitting help of the Justice Society. Installing himself as Kahndaq's unquestioned and beloved ruler, Adam assembles these so called "Champions of Kahndaq"
Rothstein and Cantrell are there by their own free will. Having become disillusioned with the moral limits placed upon superheroes in the general community, namely the limit on killing their opponents. Cantrell because of a violent attempted genocide on his people, the Feitherians and Rothstein because of trauma related to the death of his mother causing him to murder the villain Extant to return her to life. After the confrontation between the JSA and Black Adam, Rothstein was medically dead for a short period. Brought back to life by Adam's lightning and returned to America for treatment, Rothstein had begun to question Adam's motives and especially his dictatorial attitude. Pleading guilty to his international crimes he received a pardon after rejoining the JSA in their clash against Adam regarding his attempted genocide in Bialya. As of this moment he remains a member of the modern JSA in good standing having paid his debt to society and having proven his valor in standing up against his former ally at risk of his own life. I cannot force you to forgive him but to call him evil is to undersell the complexity of his motives and actions. Cantrell, as of this time is still loyal to Adam mostly due to Adam's support for turning part of Kahndaq into an autonomous homeland for the Feitherian people. I have complicated sympathies for that situation but would also not call it evil. King's membership here became much more complex than it appeared. King struggled for years due to guilt associated with his father, the original Brainwave and their shared powerset and mental illness. Like Obsidian, King was affected by the collapse of Infinity Inc and his support system. Exacerbated, it turns out, by a his brain being infected by the alien parasite Mr Mind, feeding on King's telepathic abilities and exacerbating his violent urges. When Mr. Mind was removed from his brain, King was placed under the care of his mother and has been retired ever since. Again, not evil, not even truly making choices in his own right mind in this case. Simply a vulnerable young man being taken advantage of by a nonhuman creature. And the Silver Scarab, AKA Hector Hall is a bit of an old example to bring up. Because all of that mystic hullabaloo that caused him to attack his teammates also wound up killing the man seemingly for several years until he was resurrected in possession of his faculties and is now the person active under the identity of Doctor Fate and he has been for an extended period by now. The superhero life is traumatic. I can only imagine the kind of stresses it places a person under, especially teenagers who are laboring under the expectations of legacies that overshadow everything about their lives. To simply say they "went evil" like it was a switch on the back of their head is to undercut the actual stories that these people went through and the lessons that we might learn from them. Or simply the acceptance that our fellow humanity, even super-humanity, is fragile and vulnerable even when we have the best of intentions for ourselves and those we care for.

Hi! I've been reading through your character profiles recently (they're incredibly well done, and I love learning about less popular DC characters, so thank you for making them) and in one you said Hawkman mutilated his own godson, and now I'm overflowing with curiosity. Did he actually do that? Why? That sounds horrific.
It is SO BAD, friend!
So this happened during a 2004 JSA/Hawkman crossover called Black Reign in which Black Adam decides to liberate his home country of Kahndaq from a brutal dictator (and become, um, a benevolent dictator, but that's neither here nor there). To do so, he assembles the following squad:
Atom Smasher (Al Rothstein), who is there because he's frustrated that the JSA won't kill bad guys and also because he's hot for Black Adam
Brainwave (Hank King Jr.), who is there because he has a worm in his brain making him evil (yes really)
Alexander Montez, who is there because he's possessed by Eclipso
Nemesis, who is there because she's a random forgettable villain
And Northwind (Norda Cantrell), who is there because...
Well, we don't know! Norda, like Al and Hank, is a former member of Infinity, Inc. with a particularly goofy backstory: his father is Black human man and his mother is a bird lady who kind of looks like a sexy version of Woodstock from Peanuts. So Norda is a Black biracial man who is also part bird. He used to look like this:
Tumblr media
He pretty much hadn't been seen for like a decade after Infinity, Inc. disbanded, but Black Reign reintroduces him like this:
Tumblr media
Note his head and how much more animalistic it looks. Note the narrative box explaining that he can't speak anymore, because something something evolution.
Geoff Johns decided to take a Black character who had always been characterized as gentle, thoughtful, sensitive, and kind, and turn him into a savage, murderous animal, who is literally incapable of speech. He's the only character in this story given absolutely no motivation, because he cannot speak to express one. He's already been thoroughly dehumanized, and we haven't even gotten to the mutilation yet!
(It's also implied that Norda is the only one of Black Adam's squad, besides Adam, who knows that Hank has a worm in his brain that's controlling him/eating said brain, and just literally doesn't care. That's his friend! What the fuck!!)
Anyway, even though the people of Kahndaq welcome Black Adam as a liberator, the JSA decides to go into another sovereign nation and attack its new ruler with zero authorization from either the US or the UN, because obviously a Middle Eastern nation couldn't possibly have self-determination and a bunch of very very VERY old white American men know best. I'm not saying this is a simple political or ethical situation but I AM saying the story treats it like it is, and like the JSA completely and totally has the right to fart on over to another country and declare war. Probably worth pointing out that this was only three years after 9/11.
ANYWAY. Hawkman ends up fighting Norda, who is his godson, a fact which Hawkman reminds Norda of before doing this:
Tumblr media
Jay is, correctly, horrified, and the following dialogue takes place:
Tumblr media
It's okay! Sure, Carter ripped one of his godson's limbs out of its socket, but it'll probably grow back! Maybe!
It does in fact grow back, and it's worth acknowledging that Norda was totally ripping out random dudes' entrails at the beginning of this story so he's not exactly innocent here. But for me this particular moment has three key takeaways:
The obsession that comics in the post-9/11 era had with showing heroes doing ever more gruesomely violent, morally suspect things is just as exhausting now as it was back then, and ultimately contributes very little of substance to any conversations about heroism, justice, or the wars in the Middle East.
The treatment of Norda in this story is racist, full stop.
Norda has not appeared in any significant way in the 20 years since. He was never going to be a character with a major spotlight, but this sure didn't help.

Serious Battles/Storylines Booster Has Been In (a probably pretty okay list):
The 1000 (1986, first solo)
Millennium (The Manhunters 1987, event)
Invasion (The Dominators 1988, event)
Ivo and Amazos (1989)
Teasdale Imperative (1989, JLE crossover event)
Armageddon (the Monarch, 1991, event)
Despero (1992)
Eclipso (1992, event)
Doomsday (1992, event)
Eclipso (again, 1993, event)
Devastator/Overmaster (1994) - Had his right arm shorn off, got his heart and lungs fucked up, straight up died, got hail-mary'd back to life by Ted, spent an entire year trapped in his armor because it doubled as life support:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zero Hour (1994, event)
Underworld Unleashed (1995, event)
Final Night (1996, event)
World War III (2000, event)
Our Worlds at War (2001, event)
Identity Crisis (2004, event)
Countdown (2005, 💔)
Infinite Crisis (2005, event)
52 (2006) - psychologically imploded in the beginning, but saved the whole fucking multiverse at the end of it
Booster Gold, Vol. 2 (2007-2011) - even the funny parts hurt some
Justice League: Generation Lost (2010-2011) - fucking ouch
Justice League International (New52, 2011) - legit serious leader regardless of dumbassery
Booster Shot (Rebirth, 2018)
I'm probably actually missing some. Like-- you can't let Tom King's really really bad characterization in one really lousy Batman storyline and then the absolute fuckery that was HiC erase the fact that Booster's been a legitimate superhero since his first solo. You can't even let his creator get away with it in Blue & Gold! (Though, like, he actually did help save the League there, too.)
He fought real bad guys that whole time. He was in the same major events as everyone else. Sometimes, he was even a MAJOR PLAYER in the same major events as everyone else. He got fucked up more than once doing it.
And like-- those panels above are most definitely of a guy who hasn't been serious or legit or sacrificed ever, nope. /s
So-- if we're counting pre-Flashpoint history again, DC, he's already been a hero. For a long time. A pretty damn decent one, too. (As in, you know, saving 52 universes and everything!) And from his second solo in 2007 into Flashpoint, his glory-hounding was straight up a cover. Even if we're only selectively counting some of that, that's all still real, bonafide heroing. And he's gone supervillain 100% less of the time than some of the other big name heroes, too.

Newish Comics:
Action Comics #1071: Kon and Kenan playing charity baseball together is adorable. They're turning into such buddies!
In the Kara story the spider assassin lady is cool but also reminded me of other spider assassin ladies (cough Stalk cough). Interesting premise. I have generally refused to actually learn anything about Thanagar so I am excitedly looking forward to coming out the other side of this story still bemused by it.
Batman/Superman: World's Finest #32: I thought the different ways the JLA and JSA set up Bruce and Clark to shake off Eclipso's overlay were really interesting, and I also think they need to stop doing this to poor Bruce.
Catwoman #69: oh this was fun. It felt like a breath of fresh air for Selina, which is what you want to see at the start of a new run. I liked the international angle; I liked that Selina's on the run and being tracked. It felt like a good place to pick up the title.
Jenny Sparks #3: Tom King continues to have feelings about the Iraq War and use Jenny as an ennui-filled mouthpiece. What this also reminds me of at this point is several hostage crises involving IS and other terror groups over the years.
The Warlord #72: this week in Skartaris we start with a new writer, as Cary Burkett takes over the title.
A unicorn jumps out of the transportation mirror that Travis and Shakira passed through to get back to the present in Skartaris. It is cursed to carry a plague.
This unicorn is pursued by Scarheart, a very tropey American Indian man out of a random past whose backstory with the unicorn is a pretty clear analogy for white colonisation.
We also finally get some tentacle bondage art for the first time in dozens of issues! Both the unicorn and Travis get ensnared by a carnivorous plant that tries to eat them! A return to tradition!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's the good stuff.

Comics this week ?
Superman #18 - Farewell Campbell, I loved your art on this book when you were actually able to draw it. Most enjoyable part of the Absolute Power event was this tie-in, rarely get to see Supes and Zee team up. Do need to reiterate that all the writers who make a big deal that "Superman never lies/Superman is bad at lying" are making themselves look foolish. Waid at least has tried to justify it in interviews by saying *his* Superman never directly lies as Superman, but Clark is a proficient liar no matter how you try and spin it.
World's Finest #31 - Boring start. Waid defied my expectations with the Imp arc, but this appears like it will live down to my expectations of being half-assed. Reads like Waid is sleepwriting, Eclipso and the JSA have never held my interest and this doesn't appear set to change that. I do want to shout out Gutierrez, his art is fantastic. He's great at drawing facial expressions to sell the comedy bits and he's great at fight scenes.
Wonder Woman #13 - Diana blocking bullets despite being powerless was awesome and the Diana/Steve flirting here was cute. Otherwise this sucked like the last two issues did. I finally get why people hate Damian, he is insufferable here. Normally his bluster is entertaining but here the stilted delivery King writes his dialogue in irritates me. At least it's finally over and we can get back to the main storyline.
Jenny Sparks #2 - Jenny being this emotionally affected by 9/11 is the most ridiculous thing since Doom cried over the Twin Towers. She's done plenty of genocides all by herself, knocking down two buildings is her equivalent to a cat getting stuck in a tree. All the grawlixes need to go, King overuses them to the point it's hard to follow what the characters are actually saying. That said, Jenny and Clark having had a fling in their past is perfect and everyone who got mad at that can get bent. Another $820 billion to Tom King for a Superman mini with Jenny in it please.
Incredible Hulk #17 - First time since Immortal Hulk where I've let out several "holy shit" reactions. Don't think this book will surpass GL: WJ as the peak of PKJ's cape work, but I'm back to being eager for the next issue like I was during the Warworld Saga.

ahhh ok! no rush! here’s my prompt: the staff “watching” pat get buried alive :)
set during 3x12. duh :) There was no snow on the ground, no frost in the air.  The Cosmic Staff flickered twice, a low pulse of soft light meant as a query, a concern.  So few humans knew it well enough to read meaning into the length and brightness, but two of them were here.  That should have meant something.  The wielder, the old one, the one who had been cold and gone, and their friend. Warm hands, gone cold, now warm again, gripped it too tight. The staff warbled again, a note that meant unhappy, wrong, incorrect, stop. The grip tightened.  Starman, the Wielder, only did that when he had a plan the Staff hadn’t picked up on, but what kind of plan was this?  Stripesy was one of their people! Why was he lying, bound in a pit, surrounded by dirt and dark?  The staff wailed, and gleamed, a stronger brightness now, a stronger question, a stop and think,  a bad plan, I have better plan, a why? It could feel the catch of calluses, so familiar that it hurt.
Brainwave was dead. Eclipso had been reduced to char. Dragon King’s machines had been melted down and crushed under so much stone. But this had to be Someone Else. Starman would never--harm one of Their People. They were united, they were the same.  So this had to be like before.  Golden light spilled between clasped fingers, trying to drive out the Dark that had to be clouding the Wielder’s heart- no, mind. “Power down,” that voice that the staff had missed for so long in the box said, taut. The Staff snuffed out. It was instinct, to be an extension of the wielder’s will, to trust those hands, that voice. It had failed, again. It had to obey. It had to be missing something. It wasn’t enough, never enough. The Wielder had been so long in the dark without it that he had become this, and the staff had been blinded. How had it not known, not noticed? Flying again had felt so right, the Dancer, the Stargirl, she had said this was right, this was all right,  but it was all wrong. It had missed him so much. It missed him still. It could not bear to watch what he would do because of it.

Mother(figure)s of Stargirl

Barbara certainly lives up to the phrase on her mug. Not just for the kids who live with her, either. It's so sweet the way she takes care of their friends as well.
Tumblr media
While Bridget started out the series among the ranks of moms who don't deserve their titles, she certainly gets her redemption arc as the story goes on. My favorite moment of her supporting Beth comes from Summer School: Chapter 8, but I also love that she becomes a sidekick.
Tumblr media
Speaking of redemption arcs, watching Paula turn her life around was one of the most pleasant surprises from Stargirl. She always loved Artemis, but seeing her become a hero cemented that. How her story ended hits even harder today. I'll explain more at the end of the post.
Tumblr media
Wouldn't dare go this whole post without mentioning Maria, and no I don't mean Montez. Maria Carmen Saravia was a better mom to Yolanda than her biological mother will ever be.
Tumblr media
Now for some mothers I wish we could've seen more of. Denise is up first because, like Joey, I was invested in her character very quickly. They were like my Henry before Henry, because he took time to earn my respect. I dunno, there was just something about her.
Tumblr media
Anaya's main trait was coddling Isaac. There had to be more to her story. I'm assuming she wasn't always so smothering, and that developed after the death of her husband. I really would've liked to see who she was beyond her affiliations. And that power set was worth exploring.
Tumblr media
My jaw hit the floor when I heard Christine's dying wish. Nice subversion. Evil as she and Jordan might've been, they clearly loved their kid (the latter up to a certain point, anyway). If nothing else, I'm thankful she gave Cameron his talent.
I couldn't find or make a decent screenshot of Wendi. Her only scene goes by so fast. You can feel the panic as Rick's parents left him behind. There's no way she knew JUST how bad her brother was. I wouldn't name a legacy OC after her otherwise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neither Suzanne nor Bobbie ever got to be happy, and I blame Dragon King for that. He made Cindy into the monster she thought she was, which is probably why Eclipso was able to manipulate her. I'm sorry they suffered.
Tumblr media
Merry's early JSA affiliated days would've been so cool to see. It's a shame her only appearance is in a single picture.

And lastly, two mother figures I was glad to be wrong about. Nurse Love was revealed to be just trying to help for decades. She just had the wrong idea about how. And once Miss Woods got put in check, she really came through reminding Rick of his worth.
Tumblr media
An honorable mention, Maggie. What she did in her past put her on top of the list of mothers who don't deserve to be called such. But the last thing we see her do is try to be better. I really wanted to see her earn her happy ending.
To close, I wanna talk a little about my mom.  She shared qualities showcased by some of these characters:  Sweet, hardheaded, creative, caring, smart, beautiful, funny.  She passed away in 2005.  I miss her always, but today more than usual.  She's my greatest inspiration.

Every episode is dropping every Tuesday, I try to keep them short for the content pleasure of my viewers and it’s a very background video to play while drawing, gaming, or writing, as again it’s simply a campaign, but I hope you enjoy regardless!
The story follows the Suicide Squad deployed on a new found island between Gotham city and Metropolis, Kingdom Come, a disorganized reality with each colony in their own dimension warped by inner turmoil of each of its representatives! The goal of the squad? Kill every meta-human on the island and the justice league.
