I read like one fic where Mike and Rick interact and now I need them to be brothers
Ooh! You mean like this?
~.~
And then they were five
Rick walked into the house and immediately spotted the grocery bags, the fancy ketchup, and—wait. The smell of burgers. Was Pat... grilling?
"Something’s wrong," Rick said flatly, dropping his backpack on the floor.
Mike looked up from the couch, a controller half-slipping from his hand. "Wait, you feel it too?"
Rick shut the television off with the remote, then tossed that to Pat’s recliner out of Mike’s reach.
“Hey!”
He gestured at the scene in front of them. "Pat only grills midweek when he wants to butter us up. I asked for steak on a Wednesday two weeks ago and he laughed in my face."
Pat poked his head in from the kitchen. "Hey boys! Dinner’ll be ready in a bit. Sit tight, alright?"
Rick and Mike exchanged a glance. “See?”
"He’s gonna tell us something awful," Mike agreed. "I bet I flunked math."
"You flunked math last year,” Rick said, lifting Mike from the couch with a solid yank.
"Yeah, but I bet he found out again."
They both sat stiffly at the kitchen table until Pat returned, drying his hands on a towel. He looked almost... nervous. Stacks of hamburger patties sat on a giant platter in front of the three, but no one took anything. Each one waited for someone to break the awkward silence.
"So," Pat finally began when it became clear there would be no semblance of small talk about how their day went in middle or high school. "I wanted to talk to you two about something important."
"Here it comes," Rick muttered under his breath.
"As you two know, I’ve been seeing Barbara for a while," Pat said.
Mike blinked. "Like... relationship-seeing? Not hallucinations-seeing?"
Rick groaned. "Shut up, Mike."
"Yes, relationship-seeing," Pat said, clearly trying not to laugh. "And... I’m going to ask her to marry me."
Mike’s jaw dropped.
Rick barked out a dry laugh. “Good one.” He reached for a hamburger and started fixing it with the dressings. It wasn’t until he had a thickly assembled meal on his plate that he looked up again to see Mike’s jaw still planted to the carpet and Pat looking like he had gas pains. "You’re serious."
"I am. I wanted to tell you both sooner, but—"
"But what?” Mike seemingly recovered. “You just ‘forgot’?” He lifted air-quotes, accentuating his sarcasm.
“He knew we’d be pissed,” Rick surmised. “So he conveniently omitted his life-altering plans until the last possible moment.”
“You’re gonna marry some lady we’ve known for six months and just expect us to... what? Be cool with it?"
"It’s been ten months," Pat said.
“So? It took you two years to find adoption papers!” Rick argued.
"I thought you liked her."
Mike choked. "Enough to ask her to tuck me in at night?! And get Courtney’s long curly hair stuck in our shower drains? Hell no!”
“How would that even work?” Rick asked, bouncing off his brother’s lament. “We don’t have another bedroom for Courtney.”
Mike’s eyes widened. “We are never, ever, ever, ever sharing a room. I know my human rights!”
Pat sighed, long and weary.
Rick narrowed his eyes. "What else aren’t you telling us?"
Pat hesitated. "Barbara intends to move to Nebraska. If all goes well, we’ll be moving there before the new school year. I just put a bid on a house in Blue Valley."
Silence.
Then, in perfect unison:
"What?!"
Mike stood up. "You’re moving us? Like—out of state?!"
"Is this some cruel joke?”
“No,” Pat replied. “I’m sorry, boys. I didn’t know how to tell you. I knew it would feel like another upheaval.” He finally began to eat as his sons abandoned their supper.
“This is our home!" Rick snapped. "You took me out of Blue Valley so I could escape my uncle, what makes you think I’d ever want to go back there? You can’t just uproot everything—"
"Rick might be a loser but I’ve got friends here!” Mike cut in, pacing ‘round the kitchen like a madman. “I’ve got clout at school. I have a high score at Pleaky’s arcade. We’ve got the garage!"
Pat held up his free hand. "I know it’s a big change. But I really care about Barbara, and we could all use the fresh start. She makes me happy."
Rick crossed his arms. "What about us?"
Mike added, "Yeah, what if we don’t want a stepsister?"
Rick’s voice dropped. "What if we don’t want everything to change again?"
That one hit harder than he meant.
Pat softened. "I’m not trying to replace anything. I just want you both to be part of this. Of something good."
“I’m almost 16, I don’t have to do what you say.”
“You’re 15 and you’re my kid now. I have every right to tell you to do what I say,” Pat shot back.
Without a good retort, Rick stormed out of the house with an eloquent, “Fuck!”
“Language…!” Pat called after him, but Mike merely shook his head. “Think he earned that one.”
“He’ll be back when he realizes he’s starving with no cash.” He reached over and beckoned Mike over. “C’mere,” he said. “Do you really hate Barbara that much?”
Mike rolled his eyes and relented. “No,” he said. “She’s fine. She’s nice.” He pulled a face. “She’s not my mom.”
Pat licked ketchup from the corner of his mouth, and used the same thumb to smooth out a cowlick on Mike’s forehead. “It used to be the two of us for a long time.”
“Yeah.”
“But you love Rick.”
“I tolerate him,” Mike allowed.
Pat smiled. “You’ll learn to tolerate Barb and Courtney too.”
“Not if Barb says no, she won’t.”
“Great,” Pat deadpanned, shuffling Mike’s hair and ruining his earlier progress. “That’s some nice faith you got in your father, son.”
Later that night, the boys sat in the garage.
"So...Barbara, huh?"
Rick didn’t smile. "Weird, right?"
Mike swung his legs off the workbench. "Do you think she’ll respect us?"
"I guess. Her kid’s... loud."
Mike snorted. "She’s literally the same age as you."
Rick laid down on his back, eyes on the ceiling. “I don’t feel like I’m 15.”
"You think she’s gonna try and be our sister?"
Rick shrugged. "Doubt it. But Pat’s serious about this."
They sat in silence a while longer.
Then Mike said, quieter, "He looked happy though, didn’t he?"
Rick didn’t answer right away.
“Dude. You’re like talking to a NPC. Say something.”
“I know I’m supposed to care about Pat’s happiness and shit, but I don’t.”
"Well, damn. Don’t say something, then.”
“You asked.”
Mike sighed. "So we’re really moving to Nebraska?"
Rick nodded. "Looks like it. And trust me, Blue Valley is worse than it sounds."
Mike bumped his shoulder. "At least I’ll still have the grumpiest brother in the state."
Rick rolled his eyes. But this time, he smiled.
"Yeah," he said. "Lucky you."

Blue Valley metakitties?
Set in season 3 Mike and Jakeem brought the box to the Pitstop, because this was a Justice Society Issue to handle.
"And because I don't think Buddy would like having his house over run," Mike tacked on to the explanation. Pat peeked in the box and sighed.
"So we can overrun the pitstop instead? Mike, where did you even find this many kittens?"
Beth frowned. "Illegal dumping of feral cats in the woods has decreased 25% over the last three years, but--"
"Yeah, no, I didn't find them in the woods," Mike interrupted.
"Thunderbolt brought them to us!" Jakeem added helpfully.
Pat took a step back. "He what?"
"He said they were highly recommended as problem solvers! I don't think they can help us solve the murder, though." Jakeem stuck his finger in the box and yelped as an orange kitten bit his finger.
"No, I don't think... kittens.... can help with that. Look, Jakeem, why don't you just take them--"
"Awwww," Courtney peeked in the box and without waiting even for a moment scooped up a fuzzy tabby kitten. "You're so cute! Yes you are! Yes you--wow!"
The kitten wriggled out of her grip, but instead of dropping to the cement floor, she did not do that.
"Right," said Pat. "The Thunderbolt kittens can fly. Because of course they can. Beth?"
"Sorry, Mr. Dugan. Chuck's never seen anything like this."
"I'm keeping her," Courtney said. "I'm gonna name her Sparkle."
Mike pretended to gag.
"I think technically she's Jakeem's," Beth pointed out. Jakeem shook his head emphatically, "No, no, keep her. My parents say I'm not responsible enough for a pet. Everyone can have one. Are you sure you don't want the orange guy? He keeps biting me."
"I'll pass," Courtney said, scooping up Sparkle again. Sparkle wiggle free again and climbed to perch on Courtney's head. "Oh, you like to be tall, huh?"
"Hey Mike?" Jakeem asked after a moment. " Weren't there more kittens?"
"Awww, shoot."
They found one of them at the Shade's house, chewing on a shrubbery. Another, possibly the same bitey orange kitten, Yolanda managed to grab off the bridge before a car came. She scolded it gently, and it returned the favor by trying to steal her hairtie.
A third turned out to be Sparkle, again, who'd gotten herself stuck on the roof, and wouldn't come down, floating out of reach even when Courtney went up there on Cosmo.
"What is this?" Cindy asked them when Jakeem and Mike turned up at her house to let her know about the Recent Additions to the Young Allstars. She pointed down. The tiniest kitten, a black fluffy thing that looked up at her with enormous eyes, sat on her shoe. It was roughly the size and shape of the pom-poms on winter hats worn by people like Beth Chapel.
"Uh... a kitten?" Mike said. "Jakeem wished for them."
"I did not! I wished for assistance! The Thunderbolt decided that meant kittens, not me."
"I know what a kitten is, I'm not stupid," Cindy said. "Why is it on my shoe?"
Mike reached down. The kitten hissed at him and climbed up Cindy's skinny jeans. Automatically Cindy shifted her arm so it wouldn't fall and shred her. The kitten had Teeth.
"Why is it vibrating?" she asked, suddenly concerned. "Did it break?"
"I think that means she likes you," Jakeem said, beaming.
"Yeah, she's purring. it means she feels safe."
"Why?" Cindy asked again. She pet the little kitten’s head with one finger. "If anything happens to her, I'm burning this entire town to the ground."
"Noted," Mike said.
The orange kitten wriggled out of the box again, and took off down the street, tail high.

growing pains
According to at least three teachers Mike's had, there’s no such thing as an original experience. Mike would like to formally tell all of those people to shove it, because there is no way that anyone in the history of the world has needed to get used to their parents dating supervillains that tried to kill them.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan expected to announce political future next week
Detroit, Michigan - Mayor Mike Duggan is expected to make an announcement next week about his political plans.
The third-term mayor told the Free Press Tuesday night at the Michigan Democratic Party election watch event that he will soon have more information to share. Duggan has been long-rumored to be eying a run for governor in the 2026 election. Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is barred from running again after finishing her current, second term.
"Next week, I'll have an announcement about the mayor's race, and we'll go from there," Duggan told news agencies.
Wayne County campaign records show that Duggan has not been actively fundraising for the 2025 election. His latest campaign statement from July through October shows an ending balance of more than $25,000, while others with candidate committees for mayor show having more than $100,000. Duggan raised more than $1 million for his 2021 reelection campaign.
Duggan has run Detroit for 10 years, immediately following the city’s municipal bankruptcy filing. He was confronted with restoring Detroit’s losses, driving revenue and businesses to invest in the city, and balancing the budget. The city’s budget fluctuated over the years during his tenure and dipped during the pandemic. However, he cited online gaming taxes and growing income taxes as revenue streams that helped offset losses.
One of his key indicators of success as a big city mayor is the ability to grow population. Detroit has significantly lost population since the 1960s. The latest decennial census results reported a 10.5% decline but Duggan legally fought to restore uncounted residents.
According to annual population estimates, which the bureau released in May, Detroit's population grew from 631,366 in 2022 to 633,218 residents in 2023. “This is the news we’ve been waiting for for 10 years,” Duggan said at the time.
Others who filed candidate committees for mayor include City Council President Mary Sheffield, former Councilwoman Saunteel Jenkins, Councilman Fred Durhal III and businessman Joel Haashiim.

Okay, sorry, I know this is really super random! But as I was making the yolanda gifset yesterday with the one where Yolanda shows up at Courtney's doorstep because her mom kicked her out, Mike's silent reaction is really quite fascinating. He is pretty stunned and it's almost as if he's just never quite considered that Yolanda's situation was so dire. And I just think that even though Mike's story was really sloppily done in season three, this was a really good moment for him to reconsider the gripes he has with Pat in a new perspective. Mike never had to worry about messing up so bad that Pat would kick him out. I think it's really understated.

Prompt: send Mike to the Shadowlands!
(set during the S2 fieldtrip to the shadowlands :) ) Mike took a shaking breath and looked at his wrist. The magenta watch was the only color in the entire world, and it hurt his eyes to look at it. One hour, the wavering second hand ticking backwards like a miniature bolt of lightning. He had one hour to find out what this place was, and get his sister back.
At least, that's what he assumed. He'd been specific to Thunderbolt when he borrowed the pen from Jakeem, but he hadn't asked for a time limit. Maybe that was Yz's little extra. Or maybe Jakeem had tried to help…
"Ok," Mike said to himself, looking around the greyscale version of Blue Valley and setting off down Main Street. "If I were Courtney, where would I be?" The Pitstop, maybe? The house? Richie's?” He stopped in his tracks, one foot hovering in mid air.
"Wrong question," he said to himself. "If I were a freaky little demon thing, where would I put Courtney?"
He turned towards the High school.
Light flared as he opened the heavy main doors, but it wasn't the white and blue speckled linoleum under his shoes when it faded. it was the dull cement of the Pitstop.
"Mike, are you even listening to me?" his dad said.
"What?" Mike blinked, dazed. "Dad? What are---huh?"
"It's always the same with you, Mike. You expect me to tell you things, but you don't listen to a word I say."
Mike sputtered. "That's not true! You hide everything! You share it with Courtney, but not me!"
Pat shook his head, walking away from the doors. It felt familiar. Mike tried to place the moment. Had this already happened? It... had, right? The night Crusher broke in...
Pat shook his head. "You know what, Mike? Forget it. Why would I share any of this with you? You don't have an ounce of discipline or respect, you never follow through with anything. You can't even half-ass a paper route."
Mike staggered back, ignoring the lump in his throat, or trying to. "That's not fair," he said. This couldn't be real. His dad never swore.
"It's not about Fair," Pat said. "Life's not fair. Just forget it, go home. I'll deal with this myself."
"Home? are you crazy? There's JSA stuff to do--" Mike lunged past the cordless drill on the rolling cart. "You were going to show me STRIPE...." None of that mattered, Mike remembered. He needed to find Courtney. He needed to find her and get out of here.
He yanked the Employee's Only door open, and stepped into the blinding light.
~
He staggered through the doorway, trying to adjust his eyes to the sudden deeper darkness.
The shadows writhed.
"Mike, what did you do?" his father demanded.
Mike blinked again, harder. No, that was--this wasn't right. He could see Beth and Rick and Yolanda and-- "I was trying to help," he said, misery curling in his chest. The Shade's glare pierced the dark.
"Help?" they both scoffed at the same time.
Mike trembled. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. They hadn't died last time....they hadn't---
"No," he said, shaking. He fumbled for the door behind him. Courtney. He had to find Courtney...
"Look what you did," Pat said, and the disappointment cut Mike like one of Cindy's claws.
He fell backwards through the door.
~
The unseasonable chill in Blue Valley was replaced by uncomfortable warmth. Or at least, the feeling of warmth. It wasn't actually that hot. It just... felt like it was. Mike suddenly felt very small. The pink of the watch glittered on his wrist.
"Out you get," a bored voice said, holding open the car door. "Hop out, kid."
Mike did, glancing behind him at the police car. A firm hand pushed on his shoulder, then took his hand, guiding him up the walk. The Nevada dust pricked at his nose. He knew this place. Mike stared at the weathered front door as the cop knocked.
"Patrick Dugan?" the officer asked when his dad answered.
"What?" Pat asked, sounding exhausted.
"Dad," Mike exclaimed, but his dad didn't even look at him.
"Soup kitchen over on Romano said his mother left him there last night," the officer said. "Left this address."
Pat shook his head, leaning on the door frame. "Sorry," he said to the cop. "I'm--busy. Isn't there somewhere else that can take him?"
"Dad?" Mike asked, trying to scoot forward. "I--Mom left. You're--" all I've got, he didn't say.
"You're his father," the cop said. "unless you're terminating your parental rights and surrendering him to the state...."
"Yeah," he said. "Fine. I've --Sorry to waste your time, I've just got something important to take care of."
He closed the door.
Mike threw himself at it, slamming it so hard with his palm he could feel the slivers of chipped off paint pricking his palm. He didn't care. He didn't care. "Dad! Dad, no, wait!" He didn’t care if he was making a scene, he couldn’t--his dad couldn’t mean that. Could he?
The pink around his wrist shone brighter, catching in the light. Mike caught his breath, or tried to. He couldn't stop crying. Courtney. He--he was supposed to find Courtney, but she wasn't here. She wasn't here and he was out of time and he'd--
He ran, and there were no more doors. A bright pink light surrounded him anyways.
~
The house was empty. Mike crouched in the hall, wrapped his arms around his knees, and sniffled. He'd failed. He was supposed to find Courtney, find his sister and bring her home, and he'd messed it up. just like everything else. Just like always
