This is amazing and I hope we see more of it across the country.
"Across the country, thousands of public schools face closures due to low enrollment.
But Detroit, Michigan-based nonprofit Life Remodeled is welcoming vacant schools into a new era.
The organization, which has invested $51 million in revitalizing Detroit neighborhoods, primarily works to purchase vacant properties and work with dozens of area organizations to provide life-changing resources to community members.
Tumblr media
Its first remodel — the Durfee Innovation Society — opened in 2023. A former elementary and middle school, the building is now what the organization calls “an opportunity hub,” providing resources like after-school programs, career preparedness, and support in accessing healthcare, financial literacy, and more.
“The Durfee Innovation Society is an Opportunity Hub,” Brandy Haggins, the director of the project, told CBS News. “We call it that because we’ve taken an old school building that probably would have set back vacant, and we housed it with the best and brightest nonprofits in Detroit.”
She continued: “An Opportunity Hub is a place where individuals can come and get opportunities that they deserve, that they probably otherwise would not have access to.”
The building is home to over 35 organizations, including Nursing Detroit, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Starfish Family Services.
Since it opened, the Durfee Innovation Society has provided 3,400 Detroit students with after-school programming, 5,600 with job opportunities, and 13,400 children and families with resources and support.
Ultimately, the organization says, 22,000 Detroiters take part in Durfee’s programs every year.
These numbers represent exciting milestones, but they are also in competition with what Life Remodeled is up against.
According to the organization, 88% of third graders in Detroit read below grade level. 30% of Detroiters can’t access the healthcare they need. And Detroit residents’ median household income is 50% less than suburban residents.
School closures impact low-income communities hardest, with low enrollment rates causing school districts to consolidate resources — and infrastructure.
In 2017, Durfee Elementary School merged with a local high school, and Life Remodeled swooped in to save the space.
“It’s not just community history; It’s personal history for a lot of people,”  Haggins told CBS News in 2024. “What better way to work with the community than to reopen their school building into something that still belongs to them?”
Tumblr media
The services available at the hub are free to anyone in the community. Nonprofits housed there pay for their space “at cost,” meaning they only pay what it takes to keep the building up and running.
It’s a model that seems to be working.
“The best part about being involved is seeing the actual change be made,” Charles Spears, the youth alliance president for Durfee Innovation Society, told CBS News. “You know, a lot of people talk about it. But when you get to see first hand, you actually see what is happening. It’s just like, wow, there is literally opportunity for all.”
Now, Life Remodeled is onto their next project: another “opportunity hub” on the east side of Detroit. The new property, formerly Winans Performing Arts Academy, is a 90,000-square-foot space that plans to open in December of 2025.
It’s called Anchor Detroit, and it’s located in the Denby community — an area in which residents “face significant poverty and lack access to opportunities related to educational attainment, job opportunities, and health and wellness resources,” according to a press release from Life Remodeled.
More than 50,000 square feet of the space will be leased by nonprofit partners, who will bring more after-school youth programs, workforce development initiatives, and health resources to the area...
Anchor Detroit is currently being renovated to prepare for its reopening and will reportedly include a “significant presence” for arts and culture programs.
Tumblr media
Once it opens, Life Remodeled estimates the new space will support 18,000 community members per year.
“This should be a nationwide model for other schools that have closed across the country,” Haggins told CBS News. “I think taking a school building, or any historical building that means something to a community, and repurposing it into something that’s for the community — that’s huge and necessary.”"

"It's like, it's really like it got the whole family in like an uproar. It's like one of those things like you don't know what to feel. You wanna be angry, you wanna be sad, you wanna cry, you wanna scream,” Broom's aunt Patricia Bender explained.
Even after the arrest of the person police believe is responsible, there are still a lot of questions going through Bender's mind.
"That brought some peace, but that don't take away the pain,” Bender said. “You just wanna know why, like why did you do that? Why do you feel like she deserved for that to happen, you know, and then that way and that magnitude."
Bender says her niece loved making people laugh, was full of energy and confidence and loved Nicki Minaj.
"Funny, smart like one of those people that can walk into the darkest room and find some light in it," Bender said.

Playing with ur fingers

Tumblr media
The night in the hotell room is quiet, the only sound coming from the distant hum of a car passing by and the slow, steady rhythm of Marshall’s breathing. You’re curled up to his left on the couch, his arm wrapped loosely around your waist, keeping you close. You’re using his torso as a pillow.
The TV plays some movie neither of you is really paying attention to, its glow casting a soft light over the dimly lit room.
Your hand rests on his chest, fingers tracing idle patterns over the fabric of his hoodie. His other hand finds yours, long fingers curling around yours, absentmindedly playing with them. He lifts your hand, running the pad of his thumb over your knuckles, then your fingertips, as if memorizing every line, every detail.
"You got small hands," he mutters, his voice rough from exhaustion but laced with something softer, something intimate.
You huff a small laugh. "Or maybe yours are just big."
He smirks at that but doesn’t argue. Instead, he intertwines your fingers with his, squeezing gently before bringing them to his lips. His breath is warm against your skin as he presses a slow, lingering kiss to your knuckles.
”Could write a whole song just about ur fingers”
You chuckled at that ”don’t think that would sell.” y/n said.
”Since when do I care about that?”
"You good?" he asks after a moment, his voice quieter now.
You nod, leaning in closer, letting your head rest against his chest. "Yeah. You?"
He exhales, his grip on your hand tightening just slightly. "Mhm. Better now."
The weight of the world always seems to disappear when you're like this—wrapped up in each other, his walls down, his touch gentle. You close your eyes, listening to the steady beat of his heart, and smile.
There’s nowhere else you’d rather be.

"According to National Coalition for the Homeless, 40% of the country’s homeless youth population is comprised of LGTBQ+ teens.
When New York native Austin Rivers took up knitting during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was this staggering figure that drove him towards action.
“I don’t have the capacity to build a shelter, the network or the connections to help in that way, but what I can do is knit,” Rivers told NBC News.
“And I know that New York City is cold, so I decided I would start knitting and create this nonprofit.”
That’s when he founded Knit the Rainbow, an organization that distributes free handmade garments to those in need.
And nearly five years after it was first created, Rivers’ knitting collective isn’t just serving the queer community in New York City.
Their nationwide network links local yarn stores and local nonprofits with over 550 volunteers from 45 states.
As of 2024, they have collected and distributed over 25,000 winter garments — including sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, and socks — throughout homeless communities in New Jersey, Chicago, Detroit, and beyond.
Once clothing items are shipped to Rivers’ apartment, he works with volunteers to unpack boxes, tag and sort donations, and pack and deliver them to local shelters that provide housing to LGBTQ+ and HIV+ homeless youth.
Tumblr media
Although the organization’s impact is wider, and the piles of mail have grown higher, Rivers still has a hand in day-to-day deliveries.
“We’re going to do it whether it’s rain, or snow, or shine,” Rivers said in his NBC News interview, pulling a handcart topped with boxes.
Those clothes could be the difference between frostbite and hospitalization, especially in cities that often drop below freezing in the wintertime.
But Rivers also noted that every handmade item — knitted, crocheted, or stitched — has a dual impact, because every piece of clothing is made with love.
“A lot of the times, the reason that they’re unhoused is because they were kicked out by their families,” Rivers said.
“We’re not just providing warmth, but we’re also providing that love and that compassion that they so often don’t have.”
To the members of the community Knit The Rainbow served, he had a clear message.
“There are thousands of people out here that are constantly thinking of you and using their hands to make things for you,” Rivers emphasized. “So don’t give up. Keep going.”
To download free knitting [and crochet] patterns, donate a garment, or sign up to volunteer, you can visit the organization's website to get started."
