Something I try to keep in mind when making art that looks vintage is keeping a limited color pallette. Digital art gives you a very wide, Crisp scope of colors, whereas traditional art-- especially older traditional art-- had a very limited and sometimes dulled use of color.

This is a modern riso ink swatch, but still you find a similar and limited selection of colors to mix with. (Mixing digitally as to emulate the layering of ink riso would be coloring on Multiply, and layering on top of eachother 👉)

If you find some old prints, take a closer look and see if you can tell what colors they used and which ones they layered... a lot of the time you'll find yellow as a base!

Misprints can really reveal what colors were used and where, I love misprints...

Something else I keep in the back of my mind is: how the human eye perceives color on paper vs. a screen. Ink and paint soaks into paper, it bleeds, stains, fades over time, smears, ect... the history of a piece can show in physical wear. What kind of history do you want to emulate? Misprinted? Stained? Kept as clean as possible, but unable to escape the bluing damages of the sun? It's one of my favorite things about making vintage art. Making it imperfect!

You can see the bleed, the wobble of the lines on the rug, the fading, the dirt... beautiful!!

Thinking in terms of traditional-method art while drawing digital can help open avenues to achieving that genuine, vintage look!

my plans by the end of summer are to draw more (and work on improving. ive felt very stagnant) and start doing commissions because. i need money badly. i also want to have a wishlist i can just park in my pinned post if anyone wants to kick a few bucks towards some stuff i need or want. im going on a little trip soon so this won't all be immediate lol but that's where i am rn!

The worst thing I see with free art education online is that the teachers are often so obsessed with not cheating in your art. Some of these dudes straight up say not to use reference at all ever because you need to be prepared for a time when a reference you want doesn't exist, or something. In illustration school, they taught us to cheat everything. Take photos for reference and trace them! Use royalty free images! Do literally anything you can to make sure your drawing gets done without causing you any legal trouble. I can promise you a ton of your favorite illustrators through history were CHEATERS!! I also can promise you every mangaka you like cheats thoroughly. Whatever glory you get by not cheating is not equal to the amount of trouble you put your body through with the extra effort

No funny shit I’m living less than paycheck to paycheck. It’s literally day to day for me, I have this thing at my job called daily pay which allows me to take money out and keep me and my femme fed instead of waiting 2 weeks. (Bc there’s rarely food in the house we can safely eat. Unless I bring it back.

yesterday our system went down before I clocked in and my manager said he would fix my time. (He hasn’t.) so I have $0.19 to my name until our system comes back. all I need is 20 bucks to feed myself at work and bring home groceries to feed me nd my femme.

Tl;dr im broke and gay and hungry let me hold 20 dollars.
