Started watching Undercover High School and it should be illegal to be as handsome as Seo Kang Joon. Like, I don't think a male face can get any more perfect than that.

Tiny Review: Uprising 2024. Korean Historical Class Allegory.

Though the marketing is on the two main characters, their arcs did not feel compelling to me. Feels a lot like hitting the beats for the sake of hitting beats.

I found it interesting that it took a Japanese invasion to potentially, inadvertently improve the slavery situation. But this was never fully explored 😓

Uprising is a 2024 South Korean historical war action film directed by Kim Sang-man, written by Shin Cheol and Park Chan-wook, and starring Gang Dong-won, Park Jeong-min, Kim Shin-rok, Jin Seon-kyu, Jung Sung-il, and Cha Seung-won.

UNDERCOVER HIGH SCHOOL

GENRES: Mystery, Action, Comedy

SUMMARY: Emperor Gojong’s gold is missing and it’s up to one sexy NIS agent to go undercover as a high school student to find it before anyone else.

THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Missing fathers, notebooks, GPA manipulation, chaebol entitlement, educational cities, secret bunkers, ghosts, student competition, meta manhwas, sedatives, childhood loves, and found families.

HOT TAKE: I am SO GLAD that the writers decided to ahve the characters reveal themselves as the same age sooner rather than later. Their flirtation was adorable and I did not want to get plot ick with a teacher/student romance.

This was a fun watch where all the characters were a little trope-y, but in great ways. The teachers looked out for the students, the students were appropriately teenager-y, and the antagonist was deeply, sadly broken. The plot is simple (perhaps too simple), but it gave the characters a chance to tell the story from several different angles, all of which were handled well.

More Jin Ki Joo and Kim Shin Rok, please! I haven't seen them in nearly enough projects lately!

Synopsis :

My thoughts on this drama :

This is a drama that made we go What The Hell at the end. Like, really.

It's a masterpiece. As far as modern, cheabol themed dramas go, this is by far one of the very best. We're again dealing with some big money revenge plot but it is so well executed! Song Joong Ki aced his role. I'm still stuned by his performance.

Highly recommended if you wish to enjoy a fast paced, well built story with interesting characters.

Mini-review:

I feel like I'm one of the few people who loved the first season of Hellbound. It used an original and terrifying concept to showcase a fascinating exploration of themes like religious fanaticism, sectarianism and media manipulation. And this second (and final?) season delivers the goods once again. Yeon Sang Ho continues to be a master director of action scenes, plus the performances he gets from this cast are simply superb. On top of that, the CGI is much better than it was in the first one; I'm glad they made an effort to improve on that. I'm sure many people will stay mad at the show for refusing to give clear answers until the very end, but I think that makes the viewer feel the same chaos as the characters. If this is really the end, I have to say I really enjoyed what this dark fantasy had to offer.
