Recently, I shared an article on the benefits of being fat-adapted, outlining compelling reasons and practical tips for readers.  One of the most common questions I received from new…

A study published this week in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition can at least put one diet debate to rest: the climate impact of our choices. Our food system is responsible for a third of global emissions—animal agriculture alone makes up 14%—and our diets could have a significant impact on what those emissions look like in the future. ... The diets with the lowest carbon footprint—vegan, at 0.7 kg of CO2, and vegetarian at 1.2 kg—were also generally healthier than their carbon intense, meat heavy alternatives, says lead author Diego Rose, the nutrition program director at Tulane University’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, calling it “a win-win for the environment and nutrition.” ... The report went on to note that were a third of the nation’s omnivores, who accounted for 86% of survey respondents, to give up meat on any given day, it would be equivalent to eliminating 340 million passenger vehicle miles-worth of carbon emissions. If a third gave up meat for a year, it would amount to 4.9% of total U.S. emissions reduction goals under the Paris climate accord, while substantially improving nutrition quality. “Giving up meat entirely is the easiest thing to do to improve your [carbon] footprint and your health,” says Rose. “But almost everyone can do better by just eating less of it.”

Carnivore diet: "Humans are HYPERCARNIVOROUS! We should not be eating that FOUL POISON known as vegetables!! Spinach and berries are BAD FOR YOU!!! Eat this barely seasoned slab of meat with no garlic and no spices."
Paleo diet: "We as a species NEED to eat like we did 10,000+ years ago! Dairy and bread are EVIL and are the root causes of modern illnesses! CURE your depression and ALL your physical woes by eliminating that horrid gunk!!"
Keto diet: "Carbs are KILLING YOU! They're killing everyone you've ever known and LOVED! Get rid of them or die of a THOUSAND maladies!! Fruit, pasta, bread? They're all plotting to MURDER you and your family!!"
Fad diets and diet culture can take a long walk off a short pier. Life is hard enough without having to force yourself to give up everything you enjoy. Humans are omnivores and have been cultivating grains and using dairy to help ourselves survive for millennia. Not eating a certain food group is not going to cure mental illness.

Grains. The Top Ingredient Keto, Paleo, Whole 30 Agree You Should Avoid
Tumblr media
What Is the Ingredient? Grains Yup, grains. You may have guessed it, also known as wheat, corn, rice, rye, barley, bulgur, sorghum, triticale, millet, oats, and teff. Or more commonly known as bread, pasta, processed foods, fast foods, baked goods, etc. It wasn't until recently that I realized all the "diets" like Keto, Paleo, Whole 30, and Wheat Belly lifestyles all agree on eliminating grains and of course sugar. But don't we already know that? I've noticed brain fog clears, energy levels go up, and mental wellness improves when removing grains. Recently, I fell back into poor eating habits. It happens to us all. You go out to eat once or twice and eat bread, fried food, etc., and it happens just like that, and you're back into your old routine. And just like that, you're feeling poorly again. But is it really the fried food or the grains? If you suffer from seasonal allergies, it may not be pollen but food allergies or sensitivities that are the real culprit. You may have gluten or corn sensitivity. You can try food allergy/sensitivity tests at home to determine if you have sensitivities. You can read more about that discovery in the 5 Day Cleanse -AHA moment. Below is the comparison of Paleo, Keto, Whole 30, Wheat Belly, and AIP lifestyles. It is easy to notice that all lifestyles agree that you should avoid grains and sugar. Of course, we all know at this point that sugar should be avoided. What are Paleo, Keto, Whole 30, Wheat Belly, and AIP? LifestyleMeatsDairyFruitVeggiesLegumesNuts/FatsAvoidAvoid Why avoid Grains? Grains can cause inflammation, digestion issues, gluten sensitivity, joint pain, and more. But let's focus on the many benefits of going grain-free. Benefits of Going Grain Free Improve your mood Reduce anxiety Clear brain fog Prevention of dementia - read Grain Brain for more on this and Alzheimers Relief from acid reflux Reduced joint pain Relief from allergies Improved skin Reduce inflammation Relief from digestion issues Recommended Reading - No Time To Read, Try Audible for on-the-go listening I am now proposing that we yank that big chunk out of our diets. This is because, by eliminating grains, you eliminate the appetite-stimulating effects that encourage consumption of junk carbohydrates. William Davis, MD, Wheat Belly Total Health The origin of brain disease is in many cases predominatly dietary. Although several factors play into the genesis and progression of brain disorders, to a large extent numerous neurological afflictions often reflect the mistake of consuming too many carbs and too few healthy fats. David Perlmutter, MD, Grain Brain Gluten has been linked to coronary disease, arthritic conditions, cancer, diabetes, and thyroid disease. You name the symptoms, gluten is likely the cause. Jack Wolfson, The Paleo Cardiologist Take Away The takeaway from these comparisons is that avoiding grains and sugar is beneficial, and most seem to agree. As I've said before, over and over, no two people are the same; therefore, no two people will have the same results or outcomes. Try an elimination diet to see how you feel after eliminating certain foods. Everyone will have an opinion on whether or not to eat meat or not. Eat grains or not. Be vegan/plant-based or be an omnivore. Both sides make claims about what you should or should not do. But none of them can say what will work for you. It's just a general theory on what they've seen. Not everyone is the same, so you must find what works for you by trying different eating habits and documenting how you feel. Take Your Time and Find What Works For You For instance, I know now that eating grains have caused me allergic reactions. Secondly, I know that I cannot eat a lot of red meat as it causes my triglycerides to rise and that I must take a high dose of fish oil to maintain healthy triglyceride levels. Knowing these things about your body will take effort, time, and focused energy to find what works for you. I encourage you to stick with it. Be your own advocate and detective in finding what is suitable for you. The efforts of my blog are to share my knowledge and experiences with you to see if something will work for you and not to tell you what you should or shouldn't do with your own body and health, but to be proactive in your wellness. Remember that other factors such as endocrine disruptors can also impact your health. You have to thoroughly assess contributing factors, including a food sensitivity test that can jump-start you in the right direction. Check out my course Health and Wellness Explained to start decoding what works for you and only you. I wish you peace and guidance on your journey. Take care and be well. Read the full article

You just admitted that the plains people were traditionally omnivores. They didn't just gather seasonally either. They farmed vegetables as well.
Humans have never been carnivores. Early Homo sapiens was an omnivore. Homo heidelbergensis was an omnivore. Homo erectus was an omnivore. Homo habilis was an omnivore. Australopithecus was an omnivore. Primates are generally omnivores.
There is a reason we call the earliest human societies hunter-GATHERERS. It was never just hunting.
All these trendy diets are bull;shit, be they carnivore, vegan, keto, or even paleo. The "natural human diet" is just whatever is edible and available.

Why The Phrase "Everyone Can/Should Go Vegan" is Oversimplifying and Damaging.
1. It ignores disabled people.
Yes, your friend who's disabled is vegan and they're doing fine. No, this does not mean every disabled person can or should go vegan. Some of us have specific dietary needs like high-protein or keto that are hard to fulfill on a vegan diet. Some of us have sensory issues that limit us to certain (likely non-vegan) foods on bad days. Some of us just don't have the time or energy to cook for ourselves all the time. Vegan prepared food is becoming more available, but it's still not as widespread as non-vegan prepared food. Guilting disabled people for what they eat is ableism. You don't know what's going on in someone's personal life and it's completely out-of-line to question people's disabilities in order to deem them "worthy" of eating animal products.
2. It ignores houseless and extremely low-income people.
Yes, your food bill might have gone down when you became vegan. Many people's would. However, some people don't have the ability to do weekly shopping for food. Some people are barely scraping by, some people aren't scraping by. Chicken and turkey breast sandwiches are relatively allergen-free (as opposed to cheese or nut butter) and cheap so organizations that work with homeless people hand them out sometimes. If you're hungry, you're not going to turn that down. If you're going to a food pantry for your food and receive a can of tuna or chicken, you're going to use it. If you're starving and you find a five-dollar bill on the ground you're going to buy the cheapest fast food sandwich you can get, which is usually a hamburger. If someone buys or brings you food while you're struggling financially, you're likely not going to turn it down because it has meat in it. And you shouldn't. Animals deserve to be healthy and cared for, but people don't deserve to suffer to achieve that.
3. It ignores the root cause of animal suffering, which is capitalism.
The problem isn't that we eat animals. We're omnivores, it's what we do. The problem is that profit has been deemed more important than the welfare of the animals. Almost everyone wants animals to be treated better, but they're either a) unaware of how bad things are or b) unable to afford/prepare vegan food on a regular basis. Vegan fast food isn't really there yet, neither is vegan frozen food. And it doesn't need to be, because it's not inherently unethical to eat what we were designed to eat.
It's easy to target individuals. Individuals don't sue you. Individuals don't silence you. The worst you'll get from individuals is a hearty "fuck off". But you aren't going to get every single individual to cut meat out of their diet. It's just not possible, and moreover, it's not necessary. Eating meat isn't morally good or bad, it's neutral, in the same way a dog killing a squirrel is neutral. The ethical problem is when animals are given the bare minimum, and sometimes below that, in the name of profit.
Humans have the ability to understand the suffering of other animals, which means that we are in the unique situation of being able to improve the life and death of our prey. We can form mutually beneficial bonds with other animals in which we protect them from more brutal/painful predation and provide for all their needs in exchange for humanely killing and eating them when the time comes. That should be the goal of animal welfare, a goal that's being ignored in favor of trying to achieve something that just isn't going to happen.

“The human body can store only about 24 hours worth of glucose, the quickest, most accessible form of fuel. Unless you consume carbohydrates, your body is incapable of making more. When your natural supply of glucose is depleted, your cells turn to the next best thing and begun burning fat for fuel. Your system goes into a deeply restorative state known as KETOSIS.” Dr. Axe
