Got my blood test results today. The doctor assumed that my quick weight gain might be due to a hormonal imbalance and asked if I was overeating. I admitted I might be, just a little. I didn’t tell him that, every day, for almost a year already, I’d been pumping myself with heavy cream and sugar. He pointed out that my LDL level is dangerously high and wanted to prescribe statins. How serious is that? Can statins slow down my weight gain?

When it comes to cholesterol, it's usually sorted into the 'good' kind and the 'bad' kind based on their effects on heart health – but now a new study has shown that the 'good' type of cholesterol could have other health risks attached. This is High-Density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and the latest research links an abundance of it with a higher risk of dementia in older adults. For those above 75 years of age, the risk increases by 42 percent, the analysis showed.

Lipid rafts are specialized microdomains within the plasma membrane, rich in cholesterol and sphingolipids, that play a critical role in organizing cellular processes. These dynamic structures act as platforms for signaling molecules, facilitating key functions such as immune responses, cell communication, and membrane trafficking.
Recent research has revealed the importance of lipid rafts in various diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and viral infections. Understanding how lipid rafts organize and modulate cellular activities opens up new possibilities for targeted therapies that could disrupt or harness these microdomains to treat diseases more effectively. As studies on lipid rafts advance, they are proving to be essential components of the plasma membrane's complex architecture and function.
