i saw a post recently about how the whole “harry potter was never good anyways” argument does not actually matter in regards to jkr’s bigotry because quality of art does not correlate to the artist’s morality, and while i think that point still stands, a lot of people were arguing in the notes about how we don’t stop watching every single movie with a shitty director or writer or whatever, and i think it’s worth specifying that harry potter is a pretty unique case in that jkr is an extremely active and extremely violent bigot who directly uses the money she makes from harry potter to spread and fund real-life transphobia, and that’s why you shouldn’t be buying harry potter merch, not just because she’s shitty. harry potter is pretty unique in how incredibly culturally and financially successful it is as a franchise and how jkr still makes a fuck ton of money off of it, and she has directly stated herself that consumption of harry potter supports her and her bigoted actions. she’s heavily implied that one of the primary reasons she’s making a whole ass new harry potter series is because of the three main movie actors’ vocal support of trans people.

we can debate endlessly about whether reading or watching harry potter without buying a new copy and monetarily supporting jkr is morally sound or not, but the point still stands that hp merch, and harry potter world, and a whole ass new tv series still monetarily support jkr’s bigotry, and the reason you shouldn’t engage with harry potter isn’t just because the author is shitty or that the series itself is bad, but that the money you spend on it goes through jkr’s pockets and into funding real life transphobia. it genuinely is irrelevant how good or bad harry potter is when it comes to the real life harm that results from giving jkr your money, and it’s not quite the same as other instances of great art made by dogshit people. and for the record, harry potter is objectively quite flawed (although that doesn’t mean no one is allowed to enjoy the story), and harry potter definitely isn’t the only case in which you should stop spending money on the franchise in order to stop monetarily supporting the creator and their shitty actions, but like, we don’t have a theme park about the godfather or whatever.

and also, i do think it’s still worth examining the bigotry present in harry potter because it informs the bigotry that jkr still expresses. it’s always worth examining biases in anything, but it’s especially relevant when jkr is violently racist and transphobic to this degree.

Media using a character hitting another is always a topic of discussion and here it is with Caitlyn (cause god damn it).

Most of the times media uses it as a "one time thing" and in itself, like okay.

Is it weird?

Yeah.

Mostly, media wants it to be just that, though, a one time event. A character moment. Not a discussion about abuse. Which is a whole other topic to talk about.

Now the thing is; abuse in real life doesn't have to just start out in an extrem. It mostly (of course that is still always different and individual!!!!) starts slow and with tiny occurrences. Like taking away the other partners phone etc.

The advice is to ALWAYS immediately leave for a reason. Cause when the partner hits ONCE it won't just stay at one.

See and that's the thing with media doing this. Is the character who they made to hit the other person abusive? No. Because the writers have the story in their hands and they then say "this is a one time thing." But real life is in no ones hands. There is no god that says "and you will just do this once for ✨️character✨️"

Meaning if people call that fucking shit out it isn't because they necessarily think the character is now a vile abusive piece of shit but because they recognize a pattern. And fuck, if that's not the truth. Meaning people who cry "dumb idiots for calling this abusive" make me mad.

Because people aren't necessarily calling the character abusive but the pattern behind it and how it usually occurs in real life.

Is Antizionism Antisemitism? I’d argue it isn’t.

So, first of all, we should establish some facts.

1. Jews are not a monolith

2. Nation-states are not people

3. Governments, while in democratic countries (Israel, US, most of Europe, etc.) represent the people, don’t always do or are what the people want.

Now that I’ve gotten facists to disagree with me already, let’s begin in the 30’s

One of the many campaign strategies used by the nazis to get elected was the blaming of a certain group of people. They used terms like ‘cultural Bolshevism’ and ‘banking elite’ and said the Jews were these groups. Obviously, this is a load of bunk.

But there were some Jews that were in banking at the time. There were probably Jewish communists at the time. But let me ask you this. If there is indeed are a few Jews is the places that literally Hitler said, was or is that representative of all Jews?

Let us turn to the modern day. Israel holds about 48% of the Jewish population, granted. But the US holds like 40%-ish of us. Israel, whether we like it or not, has indeed done some shit they probably could have afforded to not do. They hold a government that is worldwide unpopular, propped up by the forever war the English and Americans started by (let’s face it) making a new state in an extremely strategic area for trade and the like.

But is Israel all Jews? No. We know this, we keep calling for the people to stop conflating Jews and Israel when there is a rise in antisemitic hate crimes, so why do we do it? We keep dismissing criticism of the path Israel is on as antizionist and antisemitic, but Israel isn’t perfect. I ask you, what has Israel done, in the context of the most recent war, that others have also done? Russia would certainly approve, considering they’re doing the same to Ukraine.

We have all heard of the alleged great soldier to civvie casualty rate. But who is our source? Israel? The government that is (1) involved and (2) has a solid reason to lie for their benefit? Israel, backed bipartisanly by the US (point one politician to me in government that criticizes Israel and what they say) has been using a lot of bombs. If they wanted their people home, maybe they could, I don’t know, use the satellite data America would give if they asked? Israel is looking at a tiny, tiny part of even their already small country, and the satellites America has are über powerful, enough to detect 0.5 litres of water per minute, so why can’t they be used to find a person, even the 50 remaining hostages (at last count)?

In summary, anti-zionism is not the same as antisemitism, because Jews are not a monolith and the criticism, even opposition to the actions of a state, don’t necessarily mean that the state’s official ethnicity is being wiped out.
