it's so funny to me that in once more with feeling spike goes off on buffy about not having broken into song yet but then immediately sings one about how buffy makes him feel alive. dude forgot why people in musicals sing. because they can't just say their feelings because it's too much. he will tell her more about his feelings for her but not yet. it's still too much right now.

💀👯📺📚✨🐐🗡️🧇🧨🧤.
You don't have to answer these questions if you don't want to. I hope you are having a lovely day.
I wanna say thank you to @brilligbroilledbooks for coming up with this!
Of course, I want to answer them! Thank you for taking the time to send in the ask! Also, I'm not sure if all the questions are in relation to the Grishaverse??? So I'm just going with whatever...I want lol oops
💀 Favorite villain?
I mean The Darkling was a pretty good goddamn villain but the best ones are when you start to agree with them. When their perspective starts making sense, that's when you know you have a good villain. So with that being said, I guess ... the Joker? I mean the Darkling is a DAMN good villain, so yeah he will always be one of my favourites. But also I love a good female villain so Jennifer Check from Jennifer's Body?
"Jennifer! You're killing people!"
"No, I'm killing boys-"
It really is a cult classic.
👯Favorite ships/duos/dynamics (friendships are also ships!)?
Me & Money (lol just kidding...👀), Katniss & Peeta, Nat & Wanda, Nikolai & Zoya, Jesper & Nikolai, Buffy & Faith, Sansa & Dany, Sansa & Margaery. These are all romantic ones though - friendship ones are; Inej & Nina, Genya, Alina & Zoya, Buffy & Willow, and Peeta & Finnick.
📺Favorite tv show quote/scene?
I think would have to be Carmy's scene in The Bear, when he's at the AA meeting and finally opens up. I just related so much, he says he didn't have friends growing up, he had a stutter, never had a girlfriend...here's the scene if you want to watch it. Trigger Warning though! And then at the end of the series ... god I don't want to spoil it for you, but I have never cried and laughed so loudly and so much at the same time.
For Grishaverse -
When Jesper and Kaz are taken to see Dresden (or whatever his name is) but it's really to see Nikolai and just ... god the interaction, the witty banter. Kaz's side eye with Jesper about knowing about him being a durast.
📚 Favorite book quote/scene?
In William Shakespeare's play, 'Much Ado About Nothing,' the scene where Beatrice and Benedick are talking and she yells, "O if I were a man! I would eat his heart in the marketplace!" (Here's the scene if you want to check it out). I got it tattooed actually, except it says "I'll eat his heart in the marketplace." To me, in the play, it means the social constructs are obstructing Beatrice from standing up for her cousin, but my tattoo means ... f*ck the social norm, f*ck tradition - I can and I will call anyone out. Let me know if anyone wants to see the tattoo... if no one cares, that's totally chill as well lol
For Grishaverse -
My favourite quote would be Genya talking about her abuse from the King. It's so much more hard-hitting than in the tv show. I cried and cried while reading it. Because I think the King was still alive, and she got to say it to his face while Nikolai was there as well.
✨Which Grisha order would you belong to?
Oh my god! I'm always thinking about this. On one hand, I would love to be a summoner, but one that doesn't exist - I wanna be the main character like that tehe oops. But then again, being a durast would come in handy!!! But then there's also being a Heartrender, and no one can survive without their heart so I just want to be the most powerful 👀
🐐Who/what is your emotional support goat?
Jesper - whenever I feel overwhelmed, I'm like 'Jesper would be laughing right now, I need to chill.' But also my pets - Baloo (my lab cross rottie) and Silly (my cat who is currently asleep on my bed). Also...The Hunger Games series is my emotional support movies??? I think that says a lot about me ...
🗡️Wraith, what are your knives' names? (Moral principles that you value - yes, also name the knives)
I would name my knives like they name their swords in Game of Thrones.
Maiden Death
Fate's End
Vicious Hope
...Bad Luck
My moral principles are:
Everyone is equal and has equal opportunities (except for those who have done unforgivable things - that's a whole other discussion).
I think we should Eat the Rich - no one needs that much money
Water should always be free - everywhere
Abortions need to be legal and accessible (everywhere and without hassle)
Religion has no place in government
Marriage equality is an obvious yes - I can't believe we're still arguing about this
Guns need to be banned
Education is free, yes that includes university degrees
Medical care also needs to be free as well
Okay so that turned into opinions rather than principles...
🧇Heartrender, if you had to betray your country for food what would it be?
Okay so I don't know if you guys have these outside of Australia but we have these chocolate bars called Picnics. They're a wafer covered in caramel, then nuts with Cadbury chocolate. They're what waffles are to Nina - I would eat these for the rest of my life. I can easily eat a bag of 12 in less than 30 minutes. They're ... delectable. I'm actually eating them right now ahahah oh my god
🧨Demo-expert, how do you code your experiments? (Favorite hobby)
My fav hobby is ... this. It's this account, writing for you guys, making moodboards, researching astrology signs, mbti, pair ups, headcanons. This, as well as learning about witchcraft and tarot. Reading, and extending my writing abilities.
🧤Dirtyhands, what's your weakness?
Um... being ridiculed/insulted. But also talk sh*t get hit amirite ladies?! I think it's being rejected, looked down on, and thought of as disgusting. That's my weakness. But if we're talking...how would the enemy get me to do anything, it would probably be kidnaping my family???

Shadow and Bone: Season 2 Review
Now that I’ve sat with my s2 feelings for a day, I want to put something a bit more coherent together.
Second seasons are always tricky. They tend to fall victim to a major quality drop; very often, a first season manages to be mindblowing and the second season falls completely flat. With how much I loved season 1, I spent the past year very afraid of what kind of quality season 2 might have.
The short of it: I was pleasantly surprised, I don’t think there was a quality drop, I think that quality-wise it was pretty much en-par with season 1.
Sadly, that does include the major flaw - cramming too much plot into too few episodes. Eight episodes are just not enough for just how much they make happen, watching it all is so overwhelming in how quickly everything happens and how nothing is allowed to breath because we have to rush to the next thing because we just don’t have the time to sit with anything. And that’s a shame.
At the very least they could have given this 10 episodes to allow it all to be loosened a little bit more, though I still think that this would have been the perfect jumping off point for a Six of Crows spin off and splitting the two major plotlines this season - the Shadow and Bone season 2 focusing on Alina’s story and giving the Crows their own spin-off. Simultaneous release and make them crossover, when Zoya and Tolya go visit the Crows and when the Crows come join SaB for the season finale, those interactions could have still happened, but I think there would have been less whiplash and more focus if the rest had been allowed to happen in two separate shows.
My favorite thing about this show has been and still is that it has great characters. The plot’s... questionable - I’m not gonna lie, I’m very happy they mixed the book series (despite what I literally just sad; I think it served s1 very well to mix them) - but the characters are so amazing? I’m the type of person who usually really latches onto one characters, that’s mine, and the others become secondary characters to my fave. I don’t think I’ve ever latched onto as many characters before.
I love and adore Aleksander so much, I don’t think I’ve ever felt this feral about and attached to a villain before in my life. Alina is the most compelling female lead I’ve met since Buffy Summers, honestly - she is strong, capable, soft, beautiful, amazing. I fell for Inej so very hard so quickly, she is so amazing. Jesper is absolutely brilliant, that balance of snark and soft coupled with canon bisexual. And I even latched onto Kaz in my own way, because his trauma-response in regards to touch made me project my asexuality onto him and there aren’t many characters that I headcanon as ace so I have a very, very soft spot for those characters in particular too.
That’s already more characters than usual and I genuinely that that would be it. I knew that season 2 would bring new characters and I had hoped they’d be nice additions but I actually grew unreasonably fond of them too.
Tolya and Tamar are absolutely amazing. I wish we could have had more focus on Tamar and particularly her romance - I didn’t like that the Tamar/Nadia basically only happened in the background, like I get that we are pressed for time, I do, but you are wasting so much time on so much straight relationship drama because this show is playing Noah’s Arc to degrees that are very rare to see outside of CW shows honestly, so it would have been nice if I had gotten at least a little focus on the one wlw ship on this show, especially since they did have great chemistry on their scenes together. And Tolya is adorable, the big, strong guy and then he loves poetry and I’m gone.
Nikolai actually makes me feel like someone tailor made that guy for me. The snark! The jokes! The insistence on not remembering Mal’s name! The high levels of chemistry with Alina and the fake marriage trope with Alina! He’s a pirate! He’s a prince! He’s handsome! He’s amazing! What can’t he do! Gotta love him.
Genuinely my favorite part really was on Nikolai’s pirate ship. I would have absolutely watched an entire season of Alina and Mal as parts of Nikolai’s crew. Just. Pirate stuff with Nikolai, Tolya, Tamar and Miradi.
I really thought I would be... disappointed this season. Maybe that’s why I’m not. Because I set my expectations incredibly low so they were hard to beat, but honestly? I genuinely enjoyed the season.
The costumes were absolutely stunning this season, the costume department went all out!
The new characters were great. The plot is still whatever to me, I have thoughts on that that may be worth a separate post at some point but the thoughts aren’t changes from season 1 so it’s not really impacted by season 2. Nothing in season 2 really did anything drastic that disappointed me plot-wise. Well, that’s maybe untrue, but... nothing disappointing in an unexpected manner, perhaps, would be a better way to put that?
Aside from maybe the book spoilers I knew, like that firebird thing. I read about that. I was expecting some epic shot, with an actual firebird, some cool reveal. Not an info-dump from Baghra, of all people. That was... anticlimactic. And it also honestly made no sense? In the books, Alina and Mal went and found the actual firebird, because they were looking for the firebird. Because Alina wanted to use the firebird as her amplifier. And then realized that Mal was the amplifier that would work for her. The show kind of... muddled that together and decided that Mal couldn’t find the firebird because he was the firebird. But he... he wasn’t? He wasn’t a bird, he may have been the amplifier, but he wasn’t the actual firebird. That was... weird, boring and also kind of illogical.
I do think the show’s biggest issue is its pacing. It’s like we’re running a sprint, but it’s actually the length of a marathon. I feel out of breath. Please slow down.
I liked the ending. The ending surprised me in a positive way. I did not see a corruption arc for Alina coming at all. I really didn’t. Been advocating for this since like episode 3, nobody told me there would be actual Alina corruption in canon so that’s a nice surprise. I like how this could be a final ending that would leave things open for interpretation while still wrapping up all major plotpoints, but it definitely invites season 3. A very sensible way to end a season when you write for a Netflix show and never know if you will be allowed to live or die.

CHARACTER PARALLELS
Crowley ( Good Omens ) , Kaz Brekker ( Six of Crows ) , Faith Lehane ( Buffy ) , Roy Kent ( Ted Lasso ) , Thomas Shelby ( Peaky Blinders ) , Berlin ( Money Heist ) , Annalise Keating ( HTGAWM )
TIDBITS:
Age : 20 ( Jan 13 )
Born : Limerick
Father : TBD
Mother : Azra
Step--Mother : TBD
Half-Brother : Rodolphus
SECOND-PERSON HISTORY BITS:
You were born into royalty the bastard son of a whore, but a Lestrange prince nonetheless, second only to your older half-brother, Rodolphus. Despite the dimpled smile and chubby cheeks, you were nothing but a spare. A safety net. A necessary mistake as your birth mother was sent away with a dark threat lingering over her. Should anyone ask: you were the product of a perfect marriage. You would call the woman who despised you, despised what you reminded her of, MOTHER.
Despite the circumstances, your father looked upon you with proud features. His chest stuck out and he held his head high as he appraised his two sons like a diamond he would consider buying. But when you burrowed deep within the sheets of your bed, or played those childish games with whatever nanny your mother hired that week, your father was busy appraising other avenues. You didn’t realize this when you were younger, but your father controlled an impressive legacy. He was the captain of a rich and beautiful figurative ship, compared only to the Flying Dutchman.
He produced fear like a billionaire entrepreneur.
It took a long time for you to realize what exactly your role in the family was. The cavalry, they called you. The warrior who would ride in and save whoever was lost or in danger. You see, as you grew older, and your temper began to surface, your proud parents no longer viewed you as a simple back-up plan. No, you were so much more than that. You were to act as a confidant to your brother an easy enough task, you thought ignorantly, seeing as you had already taken up the mantle. But the cavalry was a heavy crown to rest upon your head, and you began to feel the weight the more your parents discussed your future. Because even at eleven, or thirteen, or fifteen, you could see their definition of cavalry change. It adapted the more they viewed your growth. You were too smart, too tough to be thrown in the background. You were made to stand up front with the rest.
You began to feel separated from yourself. People would discuss you, in front of you, and you would think they were bragging about some stranger you never met. You even found yourself thinking, God, this bastard sounds like a total fucking tool. Though you couldn’t exactly blame them. It was your fault, too. Your mind was too curious, too far reaching to listen and merely agree. You read Machiavelli’s The Prince and found power to be something earned rather than inherited. Were you truly a Lestrange man if you sat back and let royalty wash over you? Or were you nothing but a figurehead without the brains to control them?
While most settled for flattery when it came to life, you settled for fear, because it was always safer than love. To care about someone was to owe them something in return, and you refused to owe anyone. Not your father, not your mother, and certainly not your brother (or so you liked to think). You were a machine: alone and angry, pulling at strings to unravel whatever bullshit people would throw your way. You acted like a proletariat sometimes, wishing your life wasn’t so luxurious and stiff. You wished your parents weren’t so perfect because then you would have a reason to slouch. It was all incredibly moronic. The crown was getting much too heavy and soon, you were drowning.
But then she gave you air to breathe. Harper Macmillan: the exception to every one of your rules.
You never told her this, but the first time you noticed her was when you were fourteen years old. Sure, you watched her as she was placed in Hufflepuff, mentally noting how cute you thought she was - but it wasn’t until three months into your Charms lesson that she truly embedded herself within the recesses of your mind. Finally succeeding with her charm, she let out a contagious laugh and you couldn’t help but compare the shine of her smile to the stars above.
Harper was as tantalizing as she was beautiful, and you despised the way her surname left a bitter taste in your mouth. The Macmillan family were blood traitors and you could remember every shallow and disgusting thing your parents and their friends have said about them. They are trash, and we would rather them lay dead on the floor than have them so much as look our way, his parents snapped.
So you were fourteen and you ignored her. You were fifteen and you ignored her. You were sixteen and you ignored her. You were seventeen and your palms began to bleed because Thomas Peak, the stupid mudblood, asked her out. You clenched your fists so hard you barely noticed the way your fingernails dug into your skin. You couldn’t remember feeling so angry. So murderous.
Your jealousy continued to brew as you noticed how she and her blood traitor friends rarely ever parted. How come she could associate herself with someone so low, and you couldn’t? You complain to yourself, but you know, deep down, that you are held to a much higher standard. But still, the curiosity got the better of you, and when you were seventeen you approached her friend with a question about class, subtly looking over at Harper before saying hello. You pretended not to care. You pretended to acknowledge her with such little interest that you might as well have been speaking to a wall. And when she said hi back? You shrugged. Uncaring. But your heart practically ripped itself out of your chest right then and there, forcing you to rush off the moment her friend finished her answer.
One word. Just one fucking word. Harper Macmillan uttered one word to you and you were convinced she belonged to you. Like a possession. Like the gems your mother would polish, or the money your father would practically swim in. She was yours. Eventually you could look at nothing else, your eyes always washing over her lithe form whenever she walked into a room. She was the most beautiful thing you had ever seen, and you felt no desire to torture yourself by staying away. People swarmed you, treated you like a god, and yet you kept looking only at her.
And one day … she looked back.
No one knew of your relationship - or so you told yourself. You were smart enough to know when to be careful, smart enough to never mention her name. And sure, your anger got the better of you from time to time, resulting in a bloodied mess of any stupid fool who thought it smart to flirt with your girl - the same girl who appeared single to anyone curious enough to look.
It was your own fault, and you bloody knew it too.
Feeling this way was changing you and you didn’t like it. You felt more open to discussion, often keeping an eye out for Rodolphus simply to ask how he was doing. While a part of you always cared, despite your objections to the matter, you were never so open about it - once having been caught like a deer in headlights when claiming you were proud. A simple scoff and chuckle later and the matter was resolved. You were joking, of course. But you knew, deep down, if you didn’t get control of the matter, you wouldn’t be able to hide it much longer. Over the years, the blonde was slowly erasing what your parents so forcefully cast upon you: your inability to be a human fucking being.
To make matters worse, or better depending on who you asked, you have been secretly in contact with your birth mother. Having given up on ever knowing her, it was a surprise when an owl flew your way, dropping off a letter from the woman you thought was long gone. She never forgot about you - and unlike your other family members, she took a keen interest in your interests. She wanted to know everything about you. Naturally you kept out a lot, inwardly terrified she would be as disgusted with you as you were of yourself. But just like Harper, she was your connection to something safer. Something happier. And the greedy bastard in you won’t let her go.
Your family can never know.
PERSONALITY
The man is infamous and rightly so. But despite his reputation, Rab has been known to isolate himself more often than not. Reasonably eschewing human interaction, he uses this time to reflect on himself, his body and its warnings. This is called interoception, and Rab requires this level of perception in order to control his anger and shift it into something more positive. Helpful. With this understanding he is able to exercise full consciousness, therefore limiting the times he allows his temper to roam free. Furthering this point, this helps guide him when understanding others emotionally. When he is able to better understand his enemies, he is able to view their hopes and aspirations. To know them is to know how to defeat them.
He is constantly at odds with himself. He prides control over mostly everything and yet he struggles with intense anger issues. He becomes malicious and vindictive, almost blind to the world around him. When Rab sees red, no consequences exist. This is, once again, why he tries his best to remain isolated - until his services are needed, of course. Then he wears a twisted smirk and dances along the line that separates sanity and insanity. Switching back and forth is tiring, and he often disappears for long periods of time following an intense change. People are unaware of where he goes, and they don’t try to find him.
Even the most feared of students know to give him his space.
While this may be difficult to see, Rabastan is a family man. Despite the endless deception and bullshit, he continues to side with his immediate relatives. They are his connection to ethos. His reminder that he is human and worthy of being loved. This can be seen as his ultimate weakness. For instance, his father threatened his mother and blackmailed her, and yet he still stands beside his father and shows a form of loyalty that could not be matched. He would die for his family - something they would be all too quick to accept. His devotion to the Lestrange family has nothing to do with their legacy or their name, but rather their blood relations. He has made the mistake of trusting them time and time again only to be disappointed in the end.
Rab expects disappointment and therefore always has a back-up plan. He can bounce back to an almost pathological degree, wiping figurative (or sometimes literal) blood from his face with nonchalance painted across his features. He uses his disappointments as a way to empower himself. His limits are constantly being challenged and he has repeatedly come out on top, showing a tenacity that is difficult, if not impossible to duplicate.

LATE! but for the fandom asks: BtVS and Shadow and Bone? 💖💖💖
BtVS
my favorite female character: At the moment it’s probably Faith. Her journey and her approach to slaying has always been fun and interesting, but I’ve been thinking more about the things that lead her there lately. The bad choices she made and what could’ve gone differently with a nudge here or there.
my favorite male character: Xander Harris. I know he’s grown some hate over the years, but I love him dearly. He still one of my favorite characters of all time to this day.
my favorite book/season/etc: Season five is the best in my opinion. I’m not even sure why, but its just so good. Or maybe it’s just the last really good season of BtVS, because I feel like the show went down hill after that.
my favorite episode (if its a tv show): Hush is just an amazing episode. They do a lot with so little spoken dialogue, and the misdirect with Tara was just awesome.
my favorite cast member: Anthony Stewart Head, I always like him in whatever I see him in.
my favorite ship: I have my OTP, Spike/Xander, but at the moment my favorite ship is Angel/Willow. Every now and then I get back on them and need content, I’m just so damn picky about them and they’re on the rarer side ship-wise in the fandom that I hardly ever find anything I like. :(
a character I’d die defending: Xander! >:( He gets way more hate than he deserves and I am not here for it. I won’t got into a big defense now, many people have done a better job than me at it anyways, but the amount of blind hatred he gets is staggering.
a character I just can’t sympathize with: Warren. It’s not just that he killed Tara, but he entire storyline is basically just him being bitter and angry that life isn’t “fair.” I’d argue that he got way more than deserved from life to begin with.
a character I grew to love: Cordelia Chase. During my first watch through, I didn’t care for Cordelia until about season three. I loved her after that, and she was probably my favorite part of AtS.
my anti otp I will call it notp until I die!: Spike and Buffy. I shipped them for a half a moment when I stumbled across a random season five episode before I ever started watching the show. Then I actually watched the show and just wasn’t into them at all. It’s not that I don’t see the appeal they could hold for others, but they hold absolutely no appeal to me and I really don’t like the subplot of Spike being in love with Buffy that happened in season five.
Shadow and Bone, possible spoilers ahead! You’re getting multiple answers for almost all of these, btw :P
my favorite female character:
In the Shadow and Bones trilogy it is my girl Genya. She had some amazing lines/moments and she put with so much all for the chance at a better life. And she was this subtle badass, fighting back in her own small ways, like the method she used to poison the king. I’m a little disappointed they didn’t show the Queen all fake and plastic looking in the show considering how Genya would purposely tailor her just a little off as revenge. I still like her in the show, but she hasn’t yet grabbed me the way she did in the books. I actually don’t think I have a favorite female character in the show at this point.
Nina and Inej mostly tied as my favorites in the Six of Crows books, but Nina made me laugh more which gives her just a little bit of an edge. She’s fun and flirty and doesn’t let anyone, even Kaz, keep her from being herself. She’s also a pretty good grifter, able to use her skills with languages and her ability to read people to get what she wants.
I didn’t actually like Zoya all that much until later on in the series (a mistake on my part because Zoya is awesome), but King of Scars made her one of my favorite characters. Yes, she’s prickly and prone to jealous sniping when her position is threatened, but she’s also unapologetic in who she is and genuinely wants what is best for her country and people and will do whatever it takes to get it. She learned a hard lesson at a young age that being nice won’t protect her and has fought to keep herself and those she loves/are loyal to safe.
my favorite male character:
I’m not positive he fits the label of “favorite” but I certainly found the Darkling the most compelling male character in the books, and he’s pretty far up there in the show as well. I probably enjoy watching him on screen the most as well, although I feel like in the show Jesper was my actual favorite male character. He was certainly my favorite in Six of Crows books, and the show version of him captures book!Jesper perfectly.
I wanna say that Nikolai is my favorite somewhere, because I love him so much (he’s funny and sarcastic, which I’m always a sucker for in a character), but I feel like he doesn’t quite count for reasons I can’t put my finger one.
my favorite book/season/etc
Out of all of the Grishaverse, Six of Crows is hands down my favorite. It’s a heist! With young morally-gray criminals who don’t all have this nice heart of gold under it all, who break into-and out of -an unbreakable prison while spouting off witty dialogue!
There’s only been a single season in the show so far, but I’m excited to see more!
my favorite episode (if its a tv show)
Probably the episode two. There’s something about the way things were revealed and the subtle unfolding of many of the characters that I like.
my favorite cast member:
The only one’s who’s name I know is Ben Barnes and I only learned that when he was announced as the Darkling and Tumblr had a meltdown. *shrug* I mostly was like, “that’s the guy from The Punisher. He’s good at playing the villain, so yay.”
my favorite ship
I don’t want him redeemed in the slightest, nor do I particularly want a happy ending for them, but I love the dynamic between Alina and the Darkling. That push/pull they have, how very alike they are even as they are very opposite, and how she just can’t shake her draw to him and him to her, although he doesn’t try as hard as she does. They have this connection, are insanely compatible, and part of this tragic appeal of them is that in another life they could’ve had that happy ending together. It’s beautiful and tragic, to see how you’ve broken something before you even had it. And there’s something so appealing for me in that, in how their feelings are this tangled mess that can’t be undone and the way they really are the only people who can fully understand the other and the bond that forges between them.
On a lighter note, Nina/Matthias was my favorite ship in Six of Crows for a long time, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how much I love Kaz/Inej.
a character I’d die defending
Zoya maybe? Or Matthias?
a character I just can’t sympathize with
The apparat. I kept waiting to see if his motives were something I could relate with in the books. They weren’t. He’s just a creepy old man who wants Alina to die and become a martyr so he can lead the church in her name.
a character I grew to love
Probably Zoya. She seemed to be such a stereotypical mean girl in the first book, there only to make things hard on the main character, and I fell for it. She really is so much more than that.
my anti otp
I will accept the term anti-otp just this once because I don’t really have a notp for the show or books. The closest I have is Alina/Mal in the books. In the show I can actually see it and will probably aw over them when they get together, but in the books? He doesn’t seem to care of Alina at all, even as a friend for most of the first book, and gets downright petty and bitter when she’s revealed to be the Sun Summoner. But I can see their friendship in the show, on both sides, and that’s gone a long way for me. It’ll probably never be a ship I love, but I think I’ll probably grow to like it well enough.

Grishaverse on Netflix
So I’ve had some time today at work to come to terms with the fact that they are making a Six of Crows/Shadow and Bone Netflix series and these are my thoughts on it: No.
It would be one thing if it was a proper full series and it was just Six of Crows- I might hold out some hope because they’d have more than eight freaking episodes to flesh out the characters. Eight episodes for two different book series??? Especially one series that I didnt even like? I just don’t think they could do enough with that short a time frame to make anything I was satisfied with. You cant fit 5 books into eight episodes. You just cant. Unless they pull some seriously miraculous shit I don’t trust it. EDIT: I’ve been informed there may be multiple seasons. This has reduced my fear by a whopping 5%.
I’m not all that worried about the usual things- that they will cast Nina as a skinny girl or Inej as a white girl. Leigh has held out this long and I don’t think she’d accept a Movie/TV deal unless she had enough say in it to keep things like this from happening. There are a lot of ways they could screw this up just like they screw up almost every book series ever put on screen. The one thing that my mind kept wandering to though while I was digesting the big news, was one simple thing that is a deal-breaker for me. The thing that has made me NEVER actually want this series adapted to live action is that I don’t think it’s possible to adapt Kaz Brekker to screen. Or at the very least, what a fucking daunting prospect it would be. It’s one thing to cast him (and even fandom can’t agree on a damn fancast) and another to actually write him for television without it being a disaster.
I don’t think it can be done- not without being able to hear his inner voice. Who he is as a person and who he presents to the world are VASTLY different things- that’s like the point of him. No one ever knows what he’s actually thinking or secretly planning. He’s built up a specific image of himself in order to get the things he wants. If we cant hear his inner voice, what we are going to get on screen is either just his ‘persona’ as a sarcastic heartless criminal (who says a lot of weirdly poetic shit for a 17 year old btw- I’m sure that will translate well) or they are going to overshoot and end up with a flat “edgy dark brooding antihero with a tragic backstory” stereotype. He walks such a delicate line in the books to subvert this bad trope and Leigh Bardugo is a fucking genius in how she wrote him. I don’t trust any director to manage the same feat on screen. Hes going to end up an embarrassing badboy stereotype I fucking know it and I can’t fucking handle it haha. I’m also afraid they will “soften him up” or make him angsty to make him more likable as a protagonist (and make up for this lack of inner voice- which in the books is the only reason you can empathize with him). This is a gang leader and murderer who plucks people’s eyeballs out and threatens to kill people’s families/friends/dogs to get what he wants from them on a regular basis. He’s objectively a bad person and in any other series he’d be the damn villain and I don’t want them to shy away from that and make him something he’s not. He’s not an asshole with a secret heart of gold. Villains can fall in love and make friends too and they are still horrible people. The other big fear is of course that they will end it with him and Inej kissing (because on tv and movies the love interests always kiss at the end) which would be unfathomable for kaz due to his trauma. I don’t want him to be ‘cured by the power of love’ or some shit and If they try to turn him into fucking Angel from buffy I’m gonna set my hair on fire. I trust Netflix slightly more than the usual Hollywood asshats who love nothing more than to piss all over a good book series, but I don’t trust them that much. I’ll probably wait to see what other people have to say about it when it comes out before I watch. I can’t handle another ‘golden compass’ fiasco- I’d rather pretend it doesn’t fucking exist than be let down for the millionth time.
#six of crows#grishaverse#ok i got that out of my system#i really really really wish i could be excited for this#but im just scared#i love this series so goddamn much#im protective

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom: It Will Steal You Away, And Get Away With A Lot
Six of Crows and it’s sequel, Crooked Kingdom, by Leigh Bardugo are a treat to read, like watching Ocean’s 11 or The Italian Job. However, these characters are a bit more original then George Clooney being suave, or Marky Mark pretending to be George Clooney. I’m here because there is a gay romance subplot and an ace romance subplot.
These novels take place in Bardugo’s magical Grishaverse. Unlike her Shadow and Bone series, which mostly took place some time ago in Ravka (fantasy-Russia,) for these two books, we are in post-industrial revolution Kerch, (fantasy-Netherlands.) If you have read Bardugo’s original Grishaverse trilogy, you are rewarded, but they aren’t required reading.
Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom are heist books. Are they perfect? No. Will rereading them ever be as good? No. Do they adhere to a strict formula? Yes. That’s the genre.
Book one is about breaking into the impenetrable Fierdian Ice Court to retrieve a prisoner, and book two is about stealing from a prudish Kerch businessman. In the course of the two books, the crew inadvertently saves the world, very Suicide Squad, very need-little-evil-to-stop-big-evil.
If you are familiar with the heist genre, you know the structure. Act one: assemble the crew of outcasts. Act two: reveal the plan, using each outcast's skillset. Act three: everything goes wrong. End with a double-cross. Bardugo strays from the model about as far away as she can, while retaining a comfortable predictability. If you love Dungeons and Dragons, these might be your thing. The party is nothing, if not balanced.
One of my main gripes about these novels is the party is too balanced. We have six, (well, really five,) loveable, broken characters, each on their own redemption arcs. Each get romantically paired off, based on their mirroring baggage. It does the characters a disservice to make their love interests so very dichotomous to themselves. Zero main characters don’t fall in love. Really. Like a Shakespearian comedy.
We have team rogue, made of Kaz, the mastermind, pickpocket and lockpick, and Inej, the spy and assassin. (Jeez. Fifth edition much?) I could just as easily call them team no-touching. More on that latter.
We have team daddy-issues, made up of Wylan, the demo-expert, who’s got a rich dad that hates him, and Jesper, the gunslinger who’s got a poor dad who loves him. Spoilers: one of them gets a sugar daddy by the end of the book.
We have team WWII soldier, made up of Nina, who uses magic, and is from Ravka (fantasy-Russia,) and Matthias who hunts magic-users, and is from Fierda (fantasy Germany.)
Which brings me to my second gripe, Matthias, as a character, doesn’t work. When we first meet Matthias, he is trying to kill Nina, his beloved, with his bare hands. Cringy but not a deal-breaker. Even Buffy could make the whole “do-I-want-to-kill-you-or-kiss-you” thing work twice.
But Bardugo leans heavy into her Nazi-allegory, straight into gas-chambers. Bardugo wants you to fall in love with Matthias, a duty-bound soldier who got indoctrinated with hate, while Matthias deprograms himself from said hateful doctrine. But it’s unearned and it's uncomfortable. @reading-while-queer sums it up better than I can here: https://reading-while-queer.tumblr.com/post/168221649969/six-of-crows-leigh-bardugo
Those are big problems. Bardugo kinda gets away with it?
Give me the gay: His name is Kaz Brekker. Also called Dirty Hands. And he’s my touch-repulsed, sex-repulsed, hard-asexual boyfriend. He’s the second in command of The Crows, one of Ketterdam’s rising gangs. He’s canonically dashing, wears finely tailored charcoal suits, has a huge bad-boy thing going on, and he’s disabled. Yes! Give me a heart-throb, who is disabled and asexual. I’m here for it.
Kaz delights in his well-earned monstrous persona. But when we see him interact with Inej, he stops to get active, verbal, enthusiastic consent. And boy gosh golly, it is everything to read about how much he loves Inej. Yes! Give me stories about asexual people where they are passionate, desperately in love, and not the robotic automatons they are so often portrayed as, if not completely ignored.
Both Kaz and Inej have their own trauma about being touched. I can’t personally speak to the authenticity of the ace experience, but I can tell you Bardugo got much of the PTSD right. And it was super cool reading about two characters struggling to navigate boundaries and trauma in the middle of a heist.
I have less to say about Inej’s queerness. I read her as demi, and figuring herself out. Nina and Inej have a trusting and affectionate relationship. Their romance is not canon, but popular on the internet, and not canonically untrue. Nina’s sexual appetite, much like her appetite for cuisine, delights in a lot of everything. Both Inej and Nina did some kind of sex work, which bonds them further. While Nina chose her profession based on a lack of better options, Inej was trafficked.
Inej talks about how being Suli, fantasy-Romani, she was actively fetishized and commodified before Kaz saved her from the whore-house. Bardugo really pushes her luck with that troupe. Arguably, Inej saved herself, using Kaz as an exit. Inbetween Inej’s agency and Kaz’s asexuality, Bardugo, the real master of misdirection in these books, gets away with it.
Wylan and Jesper are our canonically gay couple. Jesper is a useless bisexual and a corrupting force of Wylan, our innocent, soft, gay ray of sunshine. They do feel like more of an afterthought. But so does everyone compared to Kaz. While it’s fun to watch them flirt, if they were the only queerdos in these books, I wouldn’t bother reviewing them.
Big picture, Matthias is the only straight character of the main six. Both Inej and Jesper are people of color. While race affects the plot, whiter characters are not better, as we see with the fantasy-Nazis. Nina talks openly about enjoying food and being big, and no one doubts that she is both large and beautiful. Kaz’s disability affects the plot, but it’s impossible to predict how before reading. These books are delightfully anti-capitalist, which tastes queer to me.
They read like a straight-cis-white-woman writer doing her best to write diversity, queerness and body positivity into her fiction. And it mostly works, considering I have lower standards for straight-cis-white-women-writers. And heist novels. And New York Times Best Sellers.
Berdugo is a great world-builder if allegory doesn’t bother you. Her timing and tension were spot on. I could hardly put these books down. Yes to queer stories that are action-fantasy-adventure-heists. Overall, I give it 5/6 crows. Literally. Bardugo gets away with a lot but I draw the line at Matthias. Luckily, Kaz is everything.

Thanks for the tag!
Three ships - Kaz and Inej, Derek and Casey, Buffy and Spike
First ever ship - Han and Leia
Last song - Ruby Tuesday by The Rolling Stones
Last film - Encanto
Currently reading - Trevor Noah’s autobiography “Born a Crime” and the serial manga “Bleach”
Currently watching - The main one I’m invested in right now is Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but I’ve been watching Life With Derek on the side (almost done). Kind of watching the Bleach anime, but mostly just skipping to specific scenes I enjoyed in the manga instead of watching it all in order because I find the anime tends to drag out certain scenes that were only a few pages long in the manga (which is kind of irritating).
Next book I’m planning to read - I’m actually not sure yet!
Currently consuming - Also water
Currently craving - I’m actually not hungry
Tagging - @yiangchen @asongofhopeandjoy @stitch1830 @twinkle-toph @moonxkitsune @nevergonnabemuchmorethanweather @burst-of-iridescent

Three ships: Xena and Gabrielle, Catherine and Peter, Derek and Casey
First ever ship: I thought it was Pazu and Sheeta from Castle in the Sky (i think that was my first OTP/obsession) but then looking back, I actually think in terms of shipping, it was Doctor and Rose from Doctor Who
Last song: Can't Get Closer - Velvet
Last film: 'Flowers in the Attic' (2014) - Its such a deeply disturbing film. I wasn't quite right after watching it.
Currently reading: You funny.
The next book I planning to read: 'You will get through the Night' by Dan Howell
Currently watching: 'The Great' - Its Great!
Currently consuming: Water
Currently craving: Nutella on Toast
Tagging: @deckerstarareotp @twobrokenwyngs @illgiveyouahint @lovelybeautifulpretty @legendofnora @hackedxy0x @imaginaryhaydee @mrs-n-uzumaki @adamisalive and anyone who wants to do it IDK
