no one talks about how the main plot driver for season two of buffy the vampire slayer is that angel genuinely got the soul fucked out of him by buffy. like. that’s what happened. im generalizing a little bit but literally the sex was so good it made him the happiest he’d ever been and his soul fell out as a result. pussy so good it makes you evil. and you as the viewer are supposed to take this seriously. “erm well technically he was just so happy being with buffy-” ok well then the post nut clarity knocked his soul out. still hilarious. check mate.

It's so annoying when bangel antis bring up shit like their age difference, their experiences, Angel not understanding Buffy, whatever the flavour of bullshit of the week is, because if you just paid attention to season 2, they spend the entire season negotiating those issues, and finding their way to each other DESPITE those things. It's so obvious that Angel loves Buffy DESPITE her being a teenager, not because of it. Buffy requires more transparency and honesty from Angel, and he's obviously uncomfortable with it, not because he's trying to manipulate her, but because it reveals the ugly parts of himself he wants to hide from her, and is afraid she won't tolerate. The point is that Buffy loves him DESPITE those things, because her experience of him is one where he's searching for redemption. Like...it's all RIGHT there, so by the time we get to Surprise, Buffy and Angel consummating their love after almost losing each other on her birthday feels like the appropriate next step for them. She's talked to Willow about it, and feels ready, Angel finally isn't resisting how he feels about her, and they admit it to each other. THAT is how you build a believable relationship progression while also advancing the plot.

2x05: "Reptile Boy"

Oh look at them being kids and having fun and having a normal, non-traumatising evening! Why is Xander actually better at braiding hair than Buffy though?

Oh bless Giles, he's trying so hard. "Don't think sitting there pouting is going to get to me, because it won't!" (quietly, lying) "It's not getting to me." He's such a dad.

For once, this show is so on the ball. Of course the college guy showing an interest in a high school girl is up to no good, of course he's a predatory creep, of course the "nice guy" is actually the worst one

Why does Angel stand like a baby pangolin?

This episode always makes me more uneasy than the rest because it hammers home the reality that even for a girl like Buffy, who can fight vampires and demons, the thing that poses a real danger to her is That Kind of Man

"The reflection thing that you don't have... Angel, how do you shave?" Oh I love Willow so much

"You bitch. I'll serve you to him in pieces." "Tom, you talk too much!" Atta girl!!!

Another Giles dad talk! Not him admitting that he pushes her so hard because he just wants her to be able to protect herself because he knows what she has to face

2x06: "Halloween"

I forgot how fucking creepy Drusilla can be when she wants to. Sometimes I like to imagine a world where someone introduced her to the concept of Stockholm Syndrome and she got over her messed up attachment to Angel(us)

The obvious delight Jenny takes in just winding Giles up is my favourite thing. Girl, that man would literally walk to the ends of the earth just following you, he doesn't care where you take him

The way Giles fully takes a beat to notice Buffy and then he's just like, "Oh, hello child."

"Are you alright? You seem a little glum." Again, he's such a dad

"I don't see why everyone's always picking on Marie Antoinette" you know what, damn right Cordy!

Aw, how happy Buffy was to see Ford, my baby girl deserved better from all men

The fact that the first time Buffy tells Angel she loves him is because she's backed into a corner and grasping for any honesty and openness from him is really sad

Dru's story is so sad, I really wish she'd been able to heal.

Giles is so me-coded because if I loaned a girl a book and she pretended to have ruined it just to fuck with me, I would also be horrified but equally I would probably also fall in love with her just for having the audacity

thinking about how kendra is so insistent on doing things by the book. follow your watcher's orders, feel no emotion, kill quickly and efficiently. and yet right off the bat she shows such extreme sadism with angel when she chains him up to slowly burn to death. we never really see that from her again (in her two minutes total of screen time), but it's interesting that at that exact moment she was feeling something that made her go "off script." it really makes her place in the Amount Of Emotions line kinda shaky. yknow, buffy is supposed to be The Right Amount of emotional, faith is too much, and kendra should be too little. but she takes pleasure in torturing angel. either that or she's so angry and she needs something that she perceives as worthless to take it out on. in some ways that's Bigger Emotions than even faith has.

S2 Bangel

So I'm fresh off a rewatch of S2 and I want a universe where they continued the "it's toxic, don't" vibes rather than retconning Bangel into One Twu Love because for real, you have Buffy saying things like, "I am immature. I'm a teen. I have yet to mature" while Angel is calling Xander (who is Buffy's age) a kid and a whole episode about a predatory relationship between a student and teacher, FFS. Like, S2 isn't subtle in its "this dynamic is not healthy" message even before he goes evil. (Even if the blame for the predatory relationship in IOHEFY falls on the student, for some reason, when in the previous season, they made a literal predator a woman teacher lusting after young boys, which is a whole other rant. At the very least, though, you do have a direct, nonsubtle comparison to what few people have a problem calling a gross, inappropriate, predatory relationship in 2024 to Bangel. One where the adult should have known better.). Like, I know they wanted to give DB his own show, but they trounced all over their own metaphor to make it happen.

Spuffy Realizations: Seasons 2-4

A huge reason that I love Buffy and Spike together so much is that nearly every episode has one or both of them realizing something that draws them closer to having a relationship with each other. I noticed while making this that Spike had the most revelations that he's falling for Buffy in Seasons 2-4, and Buffy starts noticing things in Seasons 5-7.

02/03- Spike realizes that Buffy’s different from any other Slayer.

02/06- Spike realizes that Buffy looks really good as a brunette.

02/07- Buffy realizes that she’ll let Spike eat her betrayer, as a treat.

02/10- Spike realizes that Buffy is the gnat in his ear, the gristle in his teeth, the bloody thorn in his bloody side.

02/11- Spike and Buffy realize they’d rather be fighting each other.

02/14- Spike realizes that the only way to kill Buffy is to love her.

02/17- Spike realizes that going after Buffy’s friends only results in a brassed-off Slayer, not a weakened Slayer.

02/21- Spike realizes he can’t wait to tell his friends (Buffy) that he has a big rock. See this post by @disco-tea

02/22- Spike realizes that he’d like to partner up with Buffy to take down Angel. Buffy realizes that the enemy of her enemy is your friend is all she’s got.

04/07- Spike realizes that he holds Buffy in extremely high regard.

04/13- Buffy realizes that she really enjoys having sex right after fighting.

04/14- Spike realizes that Buffy has tragic taste in men which definitely doesn’t peak his interest.

04/15- Spike realizes that he has no interest in any Slayer that isn’t Buffy.

04/16- Spike realizes that he really likes Buffy getting in his personal space and describing what she could do to him.

04/17- Spike realizes that he would really like some alone time with Betty to face her one-on-one. Buffy realizes she doesn’t like Spike treating her like she’s not a threat.

04/18- Spike realizes he cares about Buffy’s wellbeing enough that he considers helping to rescue her (for a few seconds).

04/19- Buffy realizes she has a nuanced view of good and evil, and she doesn’t like people who see in black and white.

04/20- Spike realizes he doesn’t have a valid reason anymore for not killing Buffy. See this post.

04/21- Spike realizes he doesn’t want to get staked by Buffy or leave town because he’s in love with her just because, so he better make things right with her in the only way she’ll consider valid: saving her friends.
