"Cause Innaturali" di Patricia Cornwell
“Cause Innaturali”, il nuovo thriller di Patricia Cornwell, segna un ritorno avvincente per la regina del crimine. Con il suo stile inconfondibile, Cornwell riesce a catturare l’attenzione del lettore fin dalle prime pagine, intrecciando un’intensa storia di mistero e indagine. La protagonista, Kay Scarpetta, è nuovamente alle prese con un caso complesso, dove scienza e investigazione si…

January Reading Recap
What a month! Interstate trips, house moves, and soccer back into full swing. Unfortunately, Januarys are never that great for reading as I can’t get to the library. This was exasperated by the said interstate trips and house moves meaning I couldn’t even access my own books, so, in the end – I managed 5 books and I’ll just have to live with that.
Silent Voices – Ann Cleeves
Book 4 in Cleeves’ Vera Stanhope series (yes, these are the books that inspired the television show). Well written and structured, with Cleeves’ prose evocatively capturing the Norh-East of England. If you are a fan of the show, I would caution that your favs are probably unlikeable in a very cynical British fashion, but this is intentional to the type of story Cleeves is writing – overall any criticisms would be ones of personal taste, not technically directed.
Swordcrossed – Freya Marske
The standout of the month. There were sentences in this book that were so wonderful that I made actual noises of delight (and jealousy). A fun, romantic fantasy romp with a good helping of corporate espionage. Swordcrossed belongs to a genre often considered like lollies, but in this case, we’re talking high-quality, top-shelf chocolate; the world-building, the character work, and the prose itself are all superb. Marske has quickly become my favourite Aussie author.
[the 7th book about a boy wizard]
Look, my options were limited and I can’t not have a book. As it was, it has been years since I’ve reread any of this series, let alone this book, so it was an experience. Firstly, I understand now the many criticisms this book received in terms of pacing and plot. Last books are hard, but come on. Secondly, I can see where Tumblr’s obsession with a certain blond came from, but I think most of the potential his character had was squandered – a common theme throughout this series, imo. Thirdly, you can see the sorts of prejudices and lines of thinking in this book that were unremarkable in 2007, but underpin the sort of positions the author now takes. We were all given an option – recognise what was problematic about these ideas and become a better person for it, or double-down – and some people chose wrong. Fourthly, I have always hated how the protagonists exist in a bubble where world-building selectively interacts with them. Like, has the school just stopped handing out awards or is Harry seriously just not mentioning them?
Anyway, unfortunately the 3rd best book I read this month.
Unnatural Death and Identity Unknown – Patricia Cornwell
Oh god, these were just bad. A long, long time ago, I had read a few of the early Kay Scarpetta books and I expected more of the same. Either my memory misled me, or, twenty-odd books in this series has really gone off this rails. The pacing was woeful, the editing non-existent, there were no mysteries or cleverness, the good guys were arseholes and the bad guys were characters, the movement of the plot was contrived, the politics was gesturing vaguely left but completely failing, even when it wasn’t trying to defang itself. Oh, and apparently Bigfoot is real and we ought to just have a cake about it like we’re in a television show for five year olds.
Anyways, I’m so glad I can get back to the library.
Currently Reading
Library access restored, what am I currently ploughing through in joy?
Comes By Night- Isobelle Carmondy
The Final Empire – Brandon Sanderson

The Girl Who Was Taken by Charlie Donlea
The Girl Who Was Taken by Charlie Donlea My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was my 7th book read in 2025. I just found this author last year and have enjoyed all of his books and can't wait to read the next one. Starting out, I formed a quick opinion about where the plot was headed, but boy was I wrong. I enjoyed the pacing of the book as it was not one shock after another but he took the time to explai medical examiner teaching lessons, which reminds me of a favorite, Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series. The writing definitely makes you second guess everyone you encounter along the way. Donlea has a knack for making anyone feel creepy at times. I really appreciate Donlea's ability to write strong women. I've read a handful of his books and he's remarkable at making smart, fearless capable women shine! Thrilling and mysterios, this book kept me guessing from start to finish with a fresh aspect to a traditional trope. I can't wait to read the rest of this author's backlist. View all my reviews

The Treadmill Still Waits
My blood sugar was up this morning, to 141. Bouncing back and forth. After our coffee and brain games, we had a bite of coffee cake.
I left for my dental examination a little before 11 a.m. The cleaning comes this Friday at 7 a.m. For some reason it was not planned for today, which I did not realize heading in.
We submitted a request for help with the new treadmill through a new app, but it turned out not entirely helpful. One guy wanted $300 to help assemble it, but half of what we paid for the treadmill was a bit much. Another person couldn’t help move it because she recently had shoulder surgery.
So Nancy talked to Kalen about help with moving the treadmill into the house from the garage. Nancy’s grandson Kyle might be able to do it this Friday, when he comes for dinner with his wife, Seran, and new baby girl, Sophie. Once we get it moved, I’m pretty sure we can assemble it without too much trouble. There are, after all, directions included.
I got an email from our Medicare consultant. He thinks the billing issue should be cleared up within another week. I’ll be keeping an eye on my PeaceHealth account balance.
Nancy and I went out to Johnny Ocean’s Grille for lunch. Nancy had teriyaki chicken and rice, I had the padThai once again. Then we shopped for a few more items at Trader Joe’s, including more beef birria.
At home we started re-organizing the study in order to fit the treadmill in. We turned the desk 90 degrees, and moved the printer cart to the east wall. Most of the cat stuff got rearranged a bit as well.
BTW, I bought another David Housewright book the other day from Apple Books, “Man in the Water,” about PI McKenzie in Minnesota. I’m deep into it now. I recently finished the latest Michael Connelly (“The Waiting”) and the latest Jack Reacher (“In Too Deep”). The newest book Kay Scarpetta book from Patricia Cornwell (“Identity Unknown”) is still on the coffee table, waiting for me to return to it. Also waiting more down time is the Faye Kellerman book we got from a neighbor at their yard sale a while back.
Somebody from the rental agency is supposed to come tomorrow and fix the door from the kitchen into the garage. Let’s hope it only takes some longer screws, which is what Nancy’s son-in-law Kurt suggested was needed. Anything more than that might require a further delay in getting the job done.
We munched on chips and cheese and hummus for our evening repast. Then we streamed the Tuesday night Colbert, with guest Bill Clinton, the second episode of the new series of “Bad Sisters,” the most recent episode of “Shrinking,” and another episode of “Midsomer Murders.”
