JUSTIN MARKS: I think to me what's clear in the last two scenes between Alvito and Blackthorn is that first of all, in his own way, Alvito loved Mariko just as much as Blackthorne did. It may have been spiritual love, it may have been more than spiritual love, I don't know. But it's certainly his, his feelings for her were strong enough that he would make a promise to her and keep that promise to her, even if it meant sparing the life of a man who his own church and faith tells him must die. You know, so much of Blackthorne's fate relies on this central unseen twist moment between Alvito and Mariko where Mariko negotiated a deal to spare Blackthorne's life in exchange for giving access to, and allowing for the destruction of the Erasmus, Blackthorne's ship and, and the principle weapon that could be used against the church.
So in other words, save the man, but take the weapon out of his hands, maybe then try to find a way to kill him some other day. But for Alvito, I think the act of keeping that promise in Osaka where he could have been killed in those woods and no one would've ever known, but Mariko would've known, and Alvito wouldn't let that happen.
So I think it speaks to the depth of his love for Mariko that that's what he was willing to do.
EMILY YOSHIDA: Yeah. I'm very curious to find out if there's gonna be any contingent of online fan who is just shipping Alvito and and Mariko really, really hard. I know they'll be out there. Um.

TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Shōgun (2024, USA/Japan)
Creators: Rachel Kondo & Justin Marks (based on the novel by James Clavell)
Mini-review:
Damn, this is one masterful piece of television. It's outstanding in pretty much every regard (save for one, but I'll get to that later). From the very first episode, you can just tell the show's cast and crew poured all their passion into making this. The sets and costumes are amazingly detailed, and the writing is nothing short of spellbending; it's pretty much impossible to pry your eyes away from the screen. And the acting... just WOW. This is one superb ensemble. Everyone is so f**king good that I can't even pick an MVP. As for the one thing I didn't like, that would be the cinematography. This show falls prey to the Hollywood trend of making some scenes so dark that you can't see anything. But still, everything else is absolutely incredible, so I can forgive them for the darkness. Anyway, if you haven't started Shōgun already, you really should do it as soon as possible. It's a true must-watch.

Shōgun (prods. Rachel Kondo & Justin Marks).
How Shōgun sets up its multi-layered interpersonal political allegiances through different bitter rivalries between the lords and their houses feels more than vaguely reminiscent of the violent conflicts in pursuit of power Game of Thrones made famous. It thrillingly weaves in European Christian colonial influences of faith and greed against the brutal honour of Japanese tyranny effortlessly.

TV Review: SHŌGUN - A Masterful Visual Achievement
In the history of television, some shows remain as iconic today as when they were first released. Yet, with new technologies and craftsmen in the world, there are occasional reasons to revisit these iconic worlds. In the case of Shōgun, the budget and skill is finally here to make the iconic work on a grand scale. Based on the iconic book by James Clavell, Shōgun explores a fictionalized…

Here’s a parallel I noticed that highlights the difference between Cas relationship with Dean and Cas relationship with Sam pretty well. Episodes 10x22 vs 14x15
When MOC Dean is beating up Cas, Cas doesn’t hit back even once. The most he does is try to bear hug him from behind to calm him down. But not a single punch.
When Sam is Justin Smith, Cas says he won’t hurt him, but he actually does pick him up and slam him into the ground. It’s not a big deal, obviously he knows Sam can take it, but it’s something he wouldn’t even do with Dean.
Before the actual fighting, Cas tells dean, “I’m your friend… I’ll be the one that watches you murder the world.” And then when MOC Dean is on top of Cas holding the angel blade to him, Cas holds onto the wrist Dean has on his tie and the only thing he says is, “please”. He doesn’t even try to grab the hand holding the knife. And then Dean stops.
On the other hand, when Sam is on top of Cas trying to stab him, Cas uses an entirely different approach. He’s forcibly holding back Sam’s arm that’s holding the angel blade. He tells him he understands that he wants to be happy, but that if he does this he fails the people they lost. He says “if you do this you fail Jack. Sam, you fail Dean.” And that makes Sam stop.
The difference that’s so stark is that Cas has to appeal to Sam through talking about Dean. But Cas can appeal to Dean through his own relationship to him. He doesn’t need to bring up what it will do to Sam or anyone else, because their own relationship is powerful enough and he knows it.
