Below is a list of my favorite episodes from "SHOGUN", the F/X channel's Emmy-winning adaptation of James Clavell's 1975 novel. Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the limited series starred Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis and Anna Sawai:

TOP FAVORITE EPISODES OF "SHOGUN" (2024)

(1.03) "Tomorrow Is Tomorrow" - After English sailor/pilot John Blackthorne survives an assassination attempt, daimyo Lord Yoshii Toranaga realizes he must ferry his allies out of Osaka or risk certain defeat.

2. (1.09) "Crimson Sky" - Toranaga's interpreter, Lady Toda Mariko, arrives in Osaka for the fight of her life. Blackthorne and Kashigi Yabushige, who had accompanied her, scramble to save their own heads as their options dwindle.

3. (1.06) "Ladies of the Willow World" - Lady Ochiba no Kata, dowager consort of the late Taikō, returns to Osaka in order to accelerate the Regents' campaign against Toranaga. In Ajiro, Toranaga tests Lady Mariko's loyalty to his cause.

4. (1.02) "Servants of Two Masters" - Blackthorne's arrival in Osaka stirs up a hornet's nest of rivalries. Lady Mariko is trapped between her cause and her new Catholic faith when she must translate for the Protestant Blackthorne in Lord Toranaga's presence.

5. (1.07) "A Stick of Time" - Outplayed by new alliances in Osaka, Toranaga is forced to carve out a new deal with a long lost family member.

DRAMA REVIEW | SHŌGUN (2024)

Fans of period dramas, full of intrigues and political chess plays will find SHOGUN to be their cup of tea. This is an incredible story set in the change of eras which compounds the bushido culture and the arrival of western sailors to the shores of feudal Japan.

Shogun is based on a best selling novel, that fictionalizes real events about the rise of a Samurai Lord to becoming Shogun and the start of what we all know as the Edo Period. Around the end of the 1500s, the portuguese and spanish had arrived to Japan and the Peloponnese, establishing a treated that divided the region in ways that their countries could benefit from the commerce but also create colonies and spread their religion. Rumours about these lands spread among sailors for the next 50 years or so, and finally in the 1600s ships from other monarchies, such as Britain arrived in the region.

At the same time, years earlier there was a time of inner fights and civil war among the japanese. During this time, many peasants were able to socially clime in ranks thanks to their leadership as samurai and eventually became Lords. These new nobility has a hierarchy among them, of course, related to the lands they had won in battle, people and their family's history.

The story of Shogun starts during a period of peace among these Samurai Lords... or so it would seem.

One particular character, a british sailor, is supposed to be the audience placement in the story. As he is introduced and learns about japanese culture, the audience learns about it and what game the Samurai Lords are playing among themselves as the fight for power over the realm.

Legendary japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada is listed as actor and producer in this tv show. His first time, according to interviews, having a role and say behind the scenes and I have to say he has done an incredible job. This might be an american production but Sanada insisted, as producer, on having an almost all japanese crew and the end result is a 10 episode tv show where each episodes feels like watching a movie. The attention to detail from the cinematography, lighting, sets, locations, the fabrics and designs of the clothing, and performances are simply superb.

Sanada also took it upon himself to teach the younger actors how to speak the japanese from the period the story is set at, something none of them had done before. In western culture this would be equivalent of teaching Shakespeare's english. Maybe you don't know japanese and it doesn't matter to you, plenty of the audience members watching this tv show won't even know this, but I think it adds another layer to the level of commitment everyone involved in this production had when filming Shogun.

The performances are outstanding. Everyone brings their best game and the acting is very subtle, each of actor manages to deliver the strongest emotions through micro-expressions and even silence, a difficult feat when you think this is a story mainly about the art of appearances. Where everyone is holding their cards very close to their chest, so you never know what they are capable of and what will they do next.

Actors like Asano Tadanobu, Hira Takehiro, Nishioka Tokuma and Abbe Shinnosuke are incredible to watch on the screen. Their performances will leave you wanting more. But the true gems of this story are a women: Anna Sawai, Hoshi Moeka, Kouri Yuuka and Nikaido Fumi hold their own against veteran actors and play them like fiddles. They standout as Samurai women, trained in the arts of war and court alike, and play key roles into the events that develop through the ten episodes of the series. The weakest link, acting wise, is Cosmos Jarvis. I am sorry to say I have no cluewhy he was casted. His performance leaves much to be desired, like his character, and since the tv show was renew for two more seasons I am hoping he does better in the future.

This is also a slow burn, goes hand in hand with the nature of the story being told and the performances. Big things do happen in each episode but the tv show slowly builds up to the last two, that's when things really implode/explode and makes a shift to get you ready for the next season.

For all these and so much more that I can't tell you without spoiling the series, you should watch Shogun.

DEVONS-NOUS RESPECTER ABSOLUMENT LES ETHNICITÉS SUGGÉRÉES POUR LES GRANDES FAMILLES SUZERAINES ?

S'il est préférable de respecter les ethnicités suggérées pour chaque grande famille suzeraine du Royaume nous pouvons comprendre que dans un soucis de ressources, il soit parfois difficile de les respecter. 

Certes, dans un but de représentation (Westeros étant un monde vaste et riche), nous aimerions que le plus de gens puissent être représentés parmi les grandes familles du jeu. 

Ainsi, au moment de choisir votre personnage et la famille, nous vous demandons de faire un minimum d'effort avant de lui choisir une ethnicité différente de celle suggérée (auquel cas d'ailleurs, si une ethnicité différente est choisi, nous changerons alors l'ethnicité choisie par celle représentée, pour favoriser l'intégration de membres futurs et pour rester cohérent.e.s).

De plus, nous tenons à vous rappeler que nous jouons dans un univers fictif et que les ethnicités à proprement parler se compare différemment des nôtres (autant dire que même les ethnicités de Westeros sont fictives). Nous avons les Premiers Hommes, les andals, le style valyrien, les dorniens, les marchiens, les rhoynars, etc. Or, le métissage est donc forcément quelque chose de plus rependu qu'on peut le penser.

Prenons pour exemple le couple royal composé de Daeron II Targaryen et Mariah Martell. Heureux parents de quatre enfants, pourtant, leurs fils ne se ressemblent pas tous physiquement. 

Certains partagent les traits dorniens de leur mère, comme Baelor qui a, selon le lore officiel, des cheveux noirs de jais coupés courts, hérités de sa mère dornienne. Tandis que Maekar, quant à lui décrit comme un homme sévère, puissamment bâti, portant une barbe d'argent pâle parsemée d'or impeccablement taillée, partage le physique typiquement valyrien de la maison Targaryen. Nous souhaitons que cette diversité de physique soit conservée afin de conserver cette idée selon laquelle, puisque les héritiers de la maison Targaryen partagent de plus en plus de traits dorniens (qui, jusqu’à tout récemment étaient des ennemis de la couronne et du royaume), donne une certaine ‘’légitimité’’ aux prétentions de la Maison Feunoyr sur le Trône de Fer.

‘Shōgun’ Trailer: Hiroyuki Sanada Headlines FX’s Feudal Japan Epic, Which Brings James Clavell’s Novel to Ambitious Life

Based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, the 10-episode limited series is set in Japan in the year 1600 and follows Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada), who must fight for his life after his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him.

The official logline reads, “When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne (Jarvis), comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies — the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. Toranaga’s and Blackthorne’s fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father.”

Along with Sanada and Jarvis, “Shogun” stars Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroto Kanai, Takehiro Hira, Moeka Hoshi, Tokuma Nishioka, Shinnosuke Abe, Yuki Kura and Fumi Nikaido.

“Shogun” is created for television by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, with Marks serving as showrunner and executive producer. Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Lu and Kondo executive produce, while Sanada serves as producer. The series is produced by FX Productions.

“Shogun” is set to be released in February 2024. The series will stream on Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other territories. In addition to its day-and-date global streaming launch, the FX linear channel will telecast new episodes once each week.
