Nobody 2 (dir. Timo Tjahjanto).
A mild-mannered Bob Odenkirk returns to kick more ass in his vacation sequel to the David Leitch/87North-produced, John Wick-adjacent suburban action franchise extender. We get right to things with a small-town Western setup where Hutch accidentally gets on the wrong side of the corrupt local forces in a tourist trap destination that doubles as an intersection of criminality led by Sharon Stone's ridiculous mob boss. It's eighty-nine minutes of broadly amusing nonsense, fronted by a talented B-level cast with A+ talent. There's much more of a family element as Odenkirk and Connie Nielsen's parent characters must reckon with the lasting effects of generational violence on their marriage and children. There's more than enough fun, but it's mostly a disposable experience with fine fight choreography.

Americana (dir. Tony Tost) x SXSW 2023.
It's a gritty, contemporary Western about interconnected strangers coming together over a shared crime involving a valuable Native American artifact. Many famous faces, highlighted by Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser, and Halsey, face off against one other while each is desperate to improve their station in life. Shot in New Mexico and set in South Dakota, the ensemble film stays true to genre roots by framing its violent conflict through wide-open landscapes, lawlessness, and retribution. Its portrayal of victimized women, Indigenous land rights, and white appropriation makes its modern reflection of the past all the more poignant.
Premiered at the 2023 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival (Austin, Texas) as part of the Narrative Spotlight section.

Eyes of Wakanda (prod. Todd Harris).
Marvel Animation's four-part animated anthology series expands its Black Panther lore through generations of Wakandan warriors tasked with retrieving stolen vibranium artifacts throughout their comic book history. It's a fun and novel use of the medium to deepen the fiction African kingdom's isolationist mythology built around the royal line of leaders. However, its narrative sometimes feels flat beyond the visual legacy of its characters.

Weapons (dir. Zach Cregger).
What's most satisfying about Weapons is its humour and earnest character reactions to the craziness of the plot developments. Despite the frenzied nightmare, Cregger's sophisticated storytelling maximizes the shocking revelations, leading to an odd tale of weaponized control.

Two Gentlemen of Verona x Vanier Park x Kitsilano. (via Tim Matheson).
Bard on the Beach takes an '80s throwback approach to the Shakespearean romantic comedy of errors. The talented cast makes the most of the show while injecting their own sense of humour and modern jokes along the way. From the musical interludes, period costuming, and pop culture references, the themed elements make the play about broken-hearted love, scheming, and double-crosses a little more digestible for contemporary audiences. It's a fun twist on the material.
Jacob Leonard (as Proteus) and Matthew Ip Shaw (as Valentine).
Running live on the BMO Mainstage until Sept. 19.

The Naked Gun (dir. Akiva Schaffer).
Aging star Liam Neeson hysterically parodies his own late-career, hard-boiled action filmography in a legacy sequel to the […] slapstick police comedy trilogy that was in turn based on the 1982 Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker-created Police Squad! television series..

King of the Hill (prod. Saladin K. Patterson).
It's refreshing to revisit these well-worn, authentic Texan characters years later in a changed world. The animated series' sweet emotional core remains alongside its unassuming humour about suburban American life, beyond a nostalgic tone. Its aged characters and humorous situations still feel like a warm, comforting blanket even after all these years. Everyone has made sure to maintain the humanity of those we often disagree with, look down upon, or underestimate based on differences of supposed cultural American values.

Heads of State (dir. Ilya Naishuller).
Amazon's throwback to 1990-era buddy action comedies amusingly pairs Idris Elba and John Cena as the British PM and U.S. President tasked with getting themselves out of global trouble after Air Force One is shot down. Everything to do with them dodging terrorist assassins alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Jack Quaid is mostly top-tier nonsense fun as they trek through Eastern Europe. Sadly, all the other geopolitical plot points about a greater anti-NATO conspiracy against US-UK relations masterminded by a wasted Paddy Considine should have been skipped almost entirely.

Together (dir. Michael Shanks) x Fantasia 2025.
Dave Franco and Alison Brie [build] a bizarre but intriguing romantic metaphor for sexual intimacy through its strong genre film elements. […] It's a terrifically inventive thriller that impressively doubles as an unhinged romance.
