JUSTIN MARKS: I think to me what's clear in the last two scenes between Alvito and Blackthorn is that first of all, in his own way, Alvito loved Mariko just as much as Blackthorne did. It may have been spiritual love, it may have been more than spiritual love, I don't know. But it's certainly his, his feelings for her were strong enough that he would make a promise to her and keep that promise to her, even if it meant sparing the life of a man who his own church and faith tells him must die. You know, so much of Blackthorne's fate relies on this central unseen twist moment between Alvito and Mariko where Mariko negotiated a deal to spare Blackthorne's life in exchange for giving access to, and allowing for the destruction of the Erasmus, Blackthorne's ship and, and the principle weapon that could be used against the church.

So in other words, save the man, but take the weapon out of his hands, maybe then try to find a way to kill him some other day. But for Alvito, I think the act of keeping that promise in Osaka where he could have been killed in those woods and no one would've ever known, but Mariko would've known, and Alvito wouldn't let that happen.

So I think it speaks to the depth of his love for Mariko that that's what he was willing to do.

I think you're right in your interpretation of his line against the sand being a form of defiance in some way. I'm not sure if at this point he'll accept these customs as they are and not shake things up. I remember when they told him not to stand on the sand when he got his house with Fuji the first time because it was considered very rude. With that memory, I'd say he intentionally disrespected the garden. As a statement against the grain. He's going to stand out even more at this point 💀💀

I do not believe John knows more Japanese than he lets on.

I know Father Alvito really respected Mariko as a friend-- naturally, as a close friend of over a decade, I could see him being willing to translate for John despite what quarrels John sees between Catholics and Protestans. But I think John would have to set aside his pride, which I do NOT see him doing.

Even then, that's only in Osaka, in enemy territory. The problem with that is, if John gets back to Toranaga, he won't even accept Alvito's translation, right?! So who will translate for him in Toranaga's presence?!

Maybe Rodrigues, the Spaniard?! I know they hate each other at this point but c'monnn, their chemistry was good when they were buds for two seconds 🤣 and what occasion would bring a guy at that low of a level, to Toranaga's presence?!

Shogun ep 9 has me reeling with all the implications but one that struck me that I haven’t seen anyone talk about is that now John is stranded without a translator. I know he has some basic Japanese but he still seems lost in most meaningful conversations and now that Mariko has sacrificed herself, he has lost both his love and his way of communicating.

His only alternative is the Portuguese catholic priests and I imagine he would rather not be at their mercy…. I’m just curious how he’s going to survive in this world without her :( did Mariko confess to Alvito her feelings for John and will his friendship and admiration for her enable him to help John out?

Also if anyone has any ideas about the meaning of John drawing the line in the sand during Mariko’s confession scene… was he drawing a cross to pray to? Was he doing it as an act of defiance against the facade of structure and rules they are trapped in?? Im lost on that one…
