Okay guyss its that time of year again- Im once again participating in Linktober this year!! 💛💛 However, this year is definitely going to be different for a couple reasons- the first being Im mixing it up and alternating between both the main calendar and the shadow calendar! Every odd numbered day will be a prompt from the main calendar, and every even numbered day will be a prompt from the shadow calendar 🖤 And, now, for some brutal honesty, Idk how much Ill be able to actually post on time this year because I quit my last job at the end of July and I just started a new job (that I love, btw) at the beginning of this month, so its been quite hectic and overwhelming to say the least 😅 With that being said, I have the first 10 days done so those will be posted all on time for sure!! Im going to be working on Linktober even if it takes me well into November, and Im especially inspired because of Echoes of Wisdom coming out and being absolutely addicted to it- so Im extremely motivated to finish it this year!!! 💪🏻💪🏻

Inktober Day 01

And it's October now. I really wanted to participate in inktober but I can't do it properly this year (damn you exams). Maybe next year. I will try to post something almost every day (and almost all my art is traditional and I use pens and all so maybe that counts?), let's see how that'll go

AHHHHHH THIS ONE WAS SO FUN. fun fact: these guys actually are the evil fucked up universe versions of old regular ocs of mine!!! so this prompt was really perfect for them. this is 99% non-canon, fyi, but it's a really fun plot device for psychological torment and ~symbolism~. the gimmick is essentially: what if the guys encountered a mirror that showed them their life in a normal universe. and i am here to tell you: they would not react well to it

cws: lots of emotional/psychological angst, some self-hatred, one instance of injury, something that could be interpreted as disassociation

Milo stares at the mirror and sees...them. A different them, wearing different clothes, with different hair—it's dyed cotton-candy pink, which, fuck, that's such a cool color that Milo never even dreamed of trying—but it's unmistakably them. Just...different.

Milo feels the gaping hole in their chest open a little bit wider as they stare at the other-them in the mirror. Other-them isn't even doing anything. They're just curled up on a couch, texting something on their phone, a level of calm idleness that Milo has never been able to have.

Other-them giggles at something on their phone, face wrinkling in delight, and Milo feels something crack inside of them. They dissolve into white-hot, furious tears, unable to bear this vision of a version of them happier than they could ever dream of being.

Ray peers into the mirror and sees someone who, at first, she barely recognizes as herself. It's doubly hard because Other-Ray is in a crowd of people— it's only when he opens his eyes and glances in the direction of the "camera" that Ray recognizes himself. She looks... so different. What the hell? What is he wearing? Does Other-Ray not have any fashion sense at all?

Other-Ray laughs at something someone else is saying, bonking her head against their shoulder like a weird cat. Ray squints at the other people in the mirror, trying to recognize them; does he know these faces? Are these people who could be his friends? What did he do wrong—

No. He can't be thinking like that. It's the other Ray that's wrong, it has to be. She's the one dressed in brightly clashing colors that'd give anyone a headache, the one who he knows is talking way too much even if he can't hear what she's saying, she's the worst version of him.

So why is she—

(Other-Ray tugs on someone else's hand. Ray hates him.)

Why is she—

(Other-Ray playfully shoves someone away. Ray hates her.)

Why is she the one who gets to be loved?

Other-Ray bursts out laughing again, and Ray screams, rushes forward, and slams his fist into his double's face.

The mirror cracks. The vision vanishes. Ray hurts.

Coren blinks at the mirror and sees...hm. Who is that? Some stranger with...oh, nice hair, the kind Coren always secretly wants but knows they can't have, shaved short on one side and fluffy on the other. Coren imagines the texture would feel really nice. It raises its hand unconsciously to one side of its head, then laughs at itself for its silliness.

The stranger in the mirror is flopped on a couch, staring off into space. Just kind of...sitting there? Not doing anything? Coren itches just looking at them, seized with the sudden urge to reach through the mirror and shake them and shout no! stop! at least try to look busy, you're gonna get in trouble!

The stranger sits up suddenly and moves away, and Coren slumps in relief.

...Then they come back. Holding a guitar.

For some reason, seeing that guitar, in those hands, makes Coren's own hands start shaking. Makes all of Coren start shaking. There are tears in their eyes. They have no idea why. They're being so silly, they think, and yet, as the stranger sits back down and begins to pluck at the strings with a frown of concentration on their face—wait, is that what I look like when I'm—it hurts to look. It hurts, and Coren can't take it. They turn away from themself, and run.
