As someone who grew up hunting, I think preppers love guns so much because there’s not much to them. A civilian gun safety course takes two days max, and most of it is common sense. Hunting game takes practice and skill, but like, shooting someone in self defense is as straightforward as it gets. Aim for center mass and pull.

Then you have people whose literal job revolves around using guns. Basic Training for Marines is like 13 weeks, only two of which are about marksmanship. The rest of their training is about survival, map reading, radios, chain of command, etc. Some of the best snipers in world history were teenage girls who were handed whatever piece of shit rifle the Soviet Union had at the time, and were told to take potshots at dudes in Nazi uniforms.

It just doesn’t take much to be kind of good at shooting, but it’s seen as a hetero masculine way for conservative men to bond with each other. But like, there’s other useful stuff that’s pointlessly gendered as masculine that preppers can get into. Go take a mechanics class or wood working or something. In an apocalyptic scenario I can hand any trustworthy dipshit a rifle and tell them to shoot bad guys, but if you can figure out how to hot wire a solar power system up to whatever house we’re squatting in I will suck your dick.

A thing I love to do is telling prepper dudes that one of my disaster readiness skills is making stuffed animals. They never get it. Like, my dude, when things get very bad and we're all sharing overcrowded shelters, you're gonna want the power to comfort children. Trust me.

there's this guy who was on the city council of aberdeen, WA and he was super right wing and made his whole thing about "getting drug addicts and criminals and sex perverts out of his town" like he would literally livestream himself driving around downtown talking about how he almost got attacked by an evil drug addict or talking about how many registered sex offenders live there. well it turns out this guy was SA'ing his 11 year old stepdaughter for several years. and the cognitive dissonance on display was genuinely illuminating to me in terms of showing how right wingers convince themselves that they're protecting children.

when he was caught the guy literally said something like "it's a shame this is happening now, right when I was just about to do some real good in the city and make some real change" and at first I was fucking flabbergasted but the more I thought about it the more it makes sense to me.

we already know that conservatives don't actually care about the nebulous concept of "protecting children" and that most of what they say is just straight up nonsense lightly concealing their bigotry towards trans people, gay people, the unhoused, addicts, etc. but to me this really solidified that when they're talking about the evil groomers or perverts the important thing here is that these are strangers, or Others. scary unknown people hiding in the shadows who are just crazy and unpredictable. they either don't want to address the fact that most abuse comes from within the family or they genuinely think that abuse from a parental figure is acceptable. either way it's insane to me

He watched the cigarette find its home between Steve’s lips and fought every urge to hold his lighter out, lit and desperate for the closeness it’d require. Instead, Steve stared off into the horizon and waited for the lighter in the van to warm up.

“That’s different. First of all," Eddie started, finger to the sky. "You asked me to make that. I didn’t do it for fun and I never sneakily cut your hair to use for realism.”

They were losing the last bits of daylight and Eddie started to feel a little anxious. They’d been there for far too long and they had a limited break in the weather. The longer they sat here the worse it was going to be when they finally got moving. Hanging out with Steve was starting to rub off on Eddie. He was thinking practically. It was awful.

A few brake lights ahead of them lit up and gave Eddie a bit of hope. He shook his head and said “Gross” to what Steve had said.

“So who are you kissing at midnight then? You’re not going to be doing any better than I am,” Steve poked. Eddie deserved this for getting him worked up but he didn’t enjoy it.

“I dunno, maybe our odds are about the same,” he said, feeling just a little brave as he refused to make eye contact. Even as he felt the cigarette offered again.

All of this was ramping up to something but Steve wasn’t following the script. He was on edge and quicker to fight than normal. Something Eddie usually loved and even now was enjoying a bit but that’s because it was better than thinking too hard about asking the man to be his New Year’s kiss.

To confess he’d been harboring a crush so big it was impacting everyone around them seemed the perfect road trip confession. Eddie was even blessed with traffic. Which did little more than give him more time not to pull the trigger. It shouldn't be this hard, yet Eddie stayed silent.

This is just something I've noticed when in spaces surrounding my interests:

A lot of leftists genuinely can't fathom how conservatives can and do enjoy content created by someone they disagree with. Often, posts will pop up that are along the lines of, "How can conservatives say they like this music or TV show or book series when the people behind these things (or the characters within the fictional content) would hate their guts and they're pro things conservatives aren't? There's no logic in that and it just shows how dumb the right is."

In reality, I think it just shows how close-minded the left can be. Many of the things I enjoy were created by left-leaning people, but that doesn't mean it's not good content. I keep my political views out of these spaces mostly because they're not relevant, y'know? (I'm also just introverted/shy lol - I barely interact as is). For example, my favorite genre of music is grunge. 99% of grunge musicians were openly left-leaning, but guess what? I don't care and I still like the music. The left puts so much weight on the opinions of celebrities and politicians (while trying to act like they're rebels/punk) that they think you have to agree with these completely disconnected strangers on everything.

Which is why it's always the left that are trying to cancel people. They can't separate politics from anything, which is why they are always unhappy, there's always a problem, they never enjoy anything and are impossible to please.

They can't appreciate art from other perspectives because everyone on earth has to have their exact positions on all issues or they are Bad People. So much for their "diversity is our strength" nonsense lmao.

I actively try to avoid hearing political takes from any artist I appreciate because I'm not here for a political or moral guide, I'm here for entertainment. And when you look to celebrities for guidance you are looking in the wrong place because no one is more out of touch than they are lol.

I just assume the artists I enjoy are all woke leftists because most people in those industries are and if they're not then I can be pleasantly surprised.

But if if I get told "you know so-and-so is a leftist and would probably hate you, right?" I literally could not care less because I'm not trying to be their friend. I find most of them, personality wise, to be pretty annoying myself.

Mortal sins are not so — you need the forgiveness of a cardinal (hence, cardinal sin) or higher to repent effectively.

That aside, let’s get back to the homosexual thing. For a long long long time, homosexual behavior was a PETTY SIN. It was something you paid a tiny tithe for and said a few words prayer and boom, you were good. But odds were that unless you went sleeping around or made a bad habit of getting caught and/or it interfered with normal duties (including marriage) that nobody would care. Certainly there was a lot more openness about it prior to the Schism. (Pre 1250’s)

And indeed this only changed on a broad scale after the whole Black Death thing, which fundamentally changed the church forever because people collectively had a crisis of faith and the church was losing control. So post 1350’s, they did what all powers who want control do, and targeted minorities and outcasts to try to band people together under their banner. It worked, eventually, which is how we got the nastiness of the renaissance period. But in that narrow space between the 1350’s solid medieval period to the second wave in the 1550’s that really set the motion for the church’s revival, there was a kind of odd quasi-modern greyness about a lot of that.

It’s true that the church did up the ante, and homosexual acts, along with every other kind of sodomy, were pressed up to Mortal Sin status by 1414, but there really wasn’t anyone hunting them down or anything. Yeah you could report them, but the church cared a whole lot more about heretics than homos, so good luck getting your annoying neighbor anything but mildly bothered by the local clergy.

The only place sodomy rules shined was in court, which is perhaps where the notion of its severity comes from. But sodomy as a sentencing was just a kind of Jure-plus thing — something tacked onto an existing sentence to make it weigh more. But mostly no one particularly cared as long as it didn’t get in the way.

But even when it DID get in the way, there were passes for it, if you were rich, or if you had a particularly necessary profession, etc. any reason anyone else would overlook a questionable pastime, essentially.

If you’re going to write actual period accurate homophobia, then worthwhile to include the notion that, simultaneously, 1. Love was not a sin unto itself, not in the catholic tradition, and 2. That in an effort to reconcile this with the notion that homosexual behavior (and other sodomy) was sinful, it was thus heavily implied that love only existed between husband and wife.

Ergo, two men couldn’t be in love — though it also meant that a man couldn’t love his side piece either. Evidence notwithstanding.

That all said, however, attitudes and prejudices depend EXTENSIVELY on the class, culture and location of where the story is set. A peasant is going to generally have far fewer qualms about sin than a noble, especially that sin, because they can afford to be more flexible in their marriage and relationship arrangements in general. A noble house can get away with sin if caught more easily, but there’s far more pressure to marry and have children to secure the line with, so homosexual deviance was more concerning.

Unless they’re French. Then it’s just par for the course. (And no, I don’t mean that racist-ly. The French entertained a lot more Roman customs a lot longer than anyone else and over time those ideas morphed, as they do — but in that, the notion of powerful men bedding other men as a status symbol remained. So not exactly sunshine and rainbows about it, but it wasn’t AS big of a deal, and in some areas and times was actually expected.)

it is totally okay to be hurt and tired and fed up with the american schooling system but i need you to understand that we need to be better about loudly and routinely defending public education.

yes, many teachers suck, many schools utterly suck. i also got bullied and was absolutely not given the right support for my needs. i am not defending public education because it was kind to me. i am defending it because it needs to exist.

right-wing republicans do not want an educated population. they want kids to be homeschooled or in private school. there is a huge religious undertone to this.

the most common argument is that despite high costs, the "result" is not "good" enough. they point to failing schools as proof that public education is just never going to work out. there will be arguments made here that you actually agree with: that teachers can be bullies, that we taught online for 2 years and still charged the same amount of tuition, that we have no recourse for students to actually have agency or a voice, and that schools are now unsafe for kids due to risk of illness and gun violence.

these are all placing the blame in a fraudulent way, one intended to get your parents to homeschool you. the less kids in a school, the less federally-awarded funding for that school, the less any school succeeds. they will not mention the fact it is their legislation that takes away important funding opportunities, that teachers are living at or below the poverty line, that buildings are not kept up to code, that administration is overpaid and forces specific curriculums, that corporations like (my personal enemy) Pearson Education control certain classroom goals because teachers can't afford other options. they pretend to be ignorant of the gun violence and say "oh just get a gun" - but these are the same people who will be sending their child to a private school with a bulletproof backpack. they don't care if your kid dies, though. they "don't believe" in covid, but they did get their kid vaccinated, because of course they did.

it is a closed loop. conservative parents hear the fearmongering and remove children from the system. frequently these parents are also deeply religious. the kids are raised without access to other media & learn to parrot their parents. you have now created a new generation of conservatives. additionally, one of the parents/caregivers must stay home and homeschool the children, usually for free. i will give you 1 guess which parent tends to stay home to homeschool the children. these parents are encouraged to have many, many children. those children are most likely not getting access to safe sex ed.

we might laugh at fox news suggesting teachers are forcing children to use kitty litter but: first of all, there is kitty litter in the classroom. it's part of an emergency kit in case children are locked in due to a shooter. so that's fucking dystopian, and the fact they've completely reimagined the scenario to somehow make the teachers look bad when it's instead a fucking huge symbol of our failure as a country to protect our children.... it feels a little intentional.

and they want you to feel uncaring about this. they are aware that you will hate some parts of your school experience. pretty much everyone does. they want to lean into the parts that you hate so that you don't put up a fight about it when they take it away for not being "good enough."

But just like the brooks brothers riot in 2000 and the capitulation of RBG, people did fuck all about this in their social circles and communities. And now the few of us who tried are stuck trying to get folks to brace for figuring out how to pull a civil rights movement level amount of change and then some against a Nixon but worse level full Republican control. And we only got civil rights movement legislation because there were weak adversaries and sympathetic (usually same thing) in majorities in court and congress and White House back then.

So there’s no real recourse to stopping this steal because the election 24 years ago cemented it; republicans have t needed a majority sincereagan because of electoral college, senate and gerrymanders and now right wing top courts. So if we work hard maybe we will get where we could’ve gotten next year by the 2080’s. Or things fall a part and the Susan serandans of this country get the civil war they’ve been craving as “the only way to fix things.”

Or we all make political work and understanding our job time wise and action wise and we get lucky with the republicans being unable to work together long enough to fully convert us to a Hungary/Russia type sham democracy. We can’t afford to not work hard though. Literally

Literally nothing that he can make profit from. He doesn't care about profit AT ALL. Investing??? That's not in his vocabulary. And, btw, Bruce doesn't believe it should be a private company doing this. I'm going to use Future State: Dark Detective again, but in it, he states clearly that he thinks rich people should pay their big taxes instead of having lavishing lifestyles (he pays his, btw, and I'm sure he doesn't use the charity to pay less), and the gov should use this money to make everything better for others. And that's not the only time he says that stuff.

"But, if not capitalist, why Bruce keeps WE and money? Why doesn't he change the system?" For the latter, Bruce is one man, he cannot change the system on his own, but also, if he was able to change the evil capitalist way of the USA, the story would be over. It's just like how whatever he does, Gotham never gets better: the story would end. For the former, he keeps WE for two reasons. 1, it's his parents' legacy, that's explained multiple times, and he feels like he would disappoint them if he gives it up. 2, because he knows other rich people don't care and don't use their money for nobody but themselves, and if he gives WE up, all that money and power would end in the hands of an asshole. With him and his kids, he can trust that money to go to the people.

I don't have the energy to demonstrate again how Bruce hates rich people, just look up my posts about Bruce. I have used examples.

If you tell Bruce Wayne "The rich should be dry out, and their money should go to help people and make society better", he would say "Hell yes". That's that he CANONICALLY wants.

When you call Bruce Wayne capitalist, you are showing, at best, that you have so little reading comprehension skill that you cannot understand comic books, at worst, that you don't know shit about our economic and politic hellscape you lived in and the words you use.
