Were they confusing Richmond with Atlanta lol
Must be. Atlanta is the most famous but it’s also kind of the only one that was on purpose burned out by the union. Most of the other big fire city destruction events during the Civil War were either literally just the confederacy like Richmond or mostly the confederacy like Columbia. They were setting their own cities fire rather then let black people live freely in the places they themselves built it’s really bleak.

“[President Obama] also said this, per a transcript from his office: Imagine if I had pulled Fox News’ credentials from the White House press corps…Imagine if I had said to law firms that were representing parties that were upset with policies my administration had initiated, that you will not be allowed into government buildings. We will punish you economically for dissenting from the Affordable Care Act or the Iran deal. We will ferret out students who protest against my policies. It’s unimaginable that the same parties that are silent now would have tolerated behavior like that from me, or a whole bunch of my predecessors. “People tend to think, eh, democracy, rule of law, an independent judiciary, freedom of the press—that’s all abstract stuff, because it’s not affecting the price of eggs,” Obama said. “Well, you know what? It’s about to affect the price of eggs.””

I def wanted to believe back when I thought they weren’t actually putting money behind anything showy except the “mammoth.” Their small press releases about getting funds to create a dna bank for endangered species which they wanted to then start cloning to help stave off extinctions was and is a promising idea/tool for dealing with the fall out from us taking so long to undo/stop the ravages of capitalism on the environment. But this is a grim sign that even if that is still their aim there’s not a line in the sand they won’t cross. There’s an argument to be made for helping with climate change and Rewilding by making a cold tolerant Asian elephant that can inhabit the steppe. Making weird looking wolves and calling them fire wolves who’re more related to lane wolves and jackals has no purpose besides money. And there’s no argument for bringing a modded out designer animal into an ecosystem where there’s already natural predators evolved within/for the area
Damn
It's hilarious to me how Colossal Biosciences wants to be movie-version John Hammond but are 100% book-version John Hammond. In the Jurassic Park novel, it's very clear: John Hammond is a con artist who gives people an illusion, not the truth. He knew from the beginning that what he was making weren't dinosaurs, but he didn't care because he had a story to sell. He wasn't just "filling in gaps" with the frog dna, his scientists were basically making things up from whole cloth and he had no pretence about it- but he also knew what the public wanted to believe.
Case in point: https://time.com/7274542/colossal-dire-wolf/
These are not dire wolves. These are GMO gray wolves. Dire wolves aren't even in the same genus as gray wolves, and we know this from genetics.
What Colossal is doing is scamming the public. They want you to believe that they can pull off miracles. They can't. It's the flea circus where everything is mechanised, but because you want to believe, you "see" the fleas. They might be good at genetic modification and they might be good at hyping themselves up, but they haven't de-extincted the dire wolf. They didn't activate mammoth genes in a mouse. They are lying to you and they're going to keep doing it. Don't believe the hype.

NC still brings people in despite our republicans and the conservative idiots who employ them. Part of it is that this state has periods of time where the state legislature is doing less to fuck things up than the common people are doing to help each other survive. Sometimes that adds in with the scenery and history to some good times. But too often we become Bizarro South Carolina. In my dreams NC becomes a real democracy
Amen
North Carolina is so beautiful I love the beaches and the mountains and the people and cookout and cheerwine and the general vibe it is just a lovely place to be. excepting duke university which is evil

There's a guy who I was really close with in high school and then sort of went our separate ways after college, who I wound up messaging on Instagram a few years ago when I saw he liked a Brennan Lee Mulligan post and asking if he was getting into Dimension 20. I learned that he was watching some DropOut content online but didn't have his own DropOut subscription, so I gave him mine.
He has been using my subscription for years. I don't recall exactly how long. We text <5 times a year, exclusively about DropOut.
He told me today that he's finally going to get his own household subscription so that he can share it with all the people in his life he wants to share it with.
So proud of him that he's graduating to being a Load Bearing Dropout Subscriber.

So Crawford won. Elon is, as far as I know, still being investigated for ~election crimes~ in Wisconsin. Canada is still investigating Tesla's alleged fraud with rebates. Illinois just elected a bunch of Democrats for local offices. Louisiana rejected a bunch of Republican proposed changes to their state constitution. Cory Booker held the floor of the Senate for 25 hours, breaking the record of racist shitheel Strom Thurmond and in the process, listing out the sins of the Trump administration in the Senate records and delaying their vote for some other Trump asshole. And Speaker of the House Mike Johnson got embarrassed by House Republicans joining Dems in opposing him and threw a baby hissy fit and shut down the House for a week.
We didn't get Florida. But look at all that up there.
Oh and tomorrow, Tesla has to share information about how many cars it actually delivered in the first three months of the year, which unless they fudge the books, is going to be a lower number than they would like, and might make their stock dip some more. Or just drop. Forbes has provided a little graph of their sales.
Edit: and oh shit! Mike Waltz fucked up again and got caught using fucking Gmail for work discussions. Gmail. Because Google never spied on anyone. (He has a government email address.)
Oh and in Hungary, the people have kept up their protests against Orban's move to ban Pride and, today at least, he basically fled the scene.

Are y'all seeing all these protests?
The people are clearly tired of billionaires trying to buy our democracy.

A prominent computer scientist who has spent 20 years publishing academic papers on cryptography, privacy, and cybersecurity has gone incommunicado, had his professor profile, email account, and phone number removed by his employer, Indiana University, and had his homes raided by the FBI. No one knows why. ... Fellow researchers took to social media over the weekend to register their concern over the series of events. "None of this is in any way normal," Matthew Green, a professor specializing in cryptography at Johns Hopkins University, wrote on Mastodon. He continued: "Has anyone been in contact? I hear he’s been missing for two weeks and his students can’t reach him. How does this not get noticed for two weeks???" In the same thread, Matt Blaze, a McDevitt professor of computer science and law at Georgetown University, said: "It's hard to imagine what reason there could be for the university to scrub its website as if he never worked there. And while there's a process for removing tenured faculty, it takes more than an afternoon to do it."
