I slept so much Alhamdulilah
I only woke up now
I kept waking up around 8 thinking I needed to go to work and finally it clicked when I remembered, ah yes. On break.
So I let myself sleep til… 11 it seems.
I don’t know if it counts as bad dreams but I had some interesting dreams again. I was with my family, dealing with two of my uncles, one I used to love and one I deeply dislike, they hate each other, nodding along and listening to their stories of childhood trauma (from two different perspectives of course so that means never the same story) and attempting to hide my irritation at being around them. One mocks the other saying how he had a meltdown outside of the home, he’s so sensitive. I flinch internally because there’s plenty of reasons to hate the uncle I dislike, but calling him mad and mocking a broken mind isn’t one of them.
And it was also the end of the environmental world. In my eyes anyway, some evil force was hunting and taking away all the whales. Just hunting and taking them away, not killing them for food or to sell.
You know how dreams jump cut, it’s like that. I was in my uncle’s room listening to the one i dislike talk about going some place as a kid, we’re now in that place. A forest for some reason, and he’s… with us? That doesn’t sound right, he’s practically agoraphobic. He goes off on his own, to explore his memories I suppose and maybe find some way to heal.
I have visions of a whale, and we need to help her. I see it in my mind, she’s almost the last one. She’s hidden somehow in the seas around this… island?
I think I’m underwater now because I can see her, not as distinctly as some whales in my other dreams but I can see…. A fantasy
A white whale, pure white, a giant shimmering pearl found in the blue of the oceans, but the size of a blue whale, maybe even bigger. I see what happens if she and all the whales are taken, I see the sea levels drop and then, the sea start to lose life. The balance of an ecosystem is delicate and if you were to remove whales… so much would suffer. Life in the deep sea would be non existent, life in the other zones would be… irreversibly changed, a lack of krill and microscopic creatures and the seas would change colour. You know what we learnt in GCSE biology? The way an ecosystem is sustained and the loss of whales… is a loss to the earth, turning the oceans blue to grey and dull. And if nothing else, a loss of THEM, of whales and that is enough to lose, for their lives to mean something by their own merit of existence more than anything else.
I’m crying because I want to help her but unlike my other dreams I’m at a distance, she’s quite far off from me, casting a soft winter glow under the sea like a moon sunk below the waves, swimming at a distance just below the surface. I think I can’t come closer to her until I have a plan to help her and I promise I will.
I promise I will.

Finished up spinning this naturally dyed shetland gradient today. The bottom two were dyed by @mimsiical and the others by myself. Spun on my supported spindles and 2 plied. Each skein was 2 rolags; that's the extent of what I had in some colors and only a fraction of what I have for others. No particular plan for the yarn other than a few fanciful ideas. This ended up as 186 yards total (170 meters) and is from at least 3 different fleeces, but all were shetland.

Also. I'm so not sure which direction it's going to take with Damian liking ancient history. It could just be setup for this one chapter, sure, but it seemed like something he genuinely had passion for. But. Something about politics and history and learning from the mistakes of the past so they're not repeated

All Homophobic Navani jokes aside I do think she is really working on becoming more accepting of this kind of stuff and like it would be easy to say it’s because of the crab yuri or whatever but honestly I think she started rethinking things when, like, her husband asked her to teach him how to read and she had to get really cool about a lot of things really quickly

idk but at some point in the past couple of years I started really thinking about the amount of very human work that still goes into everything we own even if it's factory made. like, someone at some point had the idea to add a foot pedal to trash cans. someone decided to add fun lights to electric water kettles so you can see the water boil. someone designed the sticker with the picture of a pizza that's on my oven door. someone took that picture of the pizza. Ssomeone (lots of people actually) designs basic ikea furniture. someone (also, again, lots of people actually) designs all those silly or boring or cliche postcards. (well, not all of them anymore because AI but up until recently every single postcard ever that you could buy was, technically, a small piece of art made by a human). and even after having these ideas, someone had to actually engineer the foot pedal and then someone had to find the material to make them and someone has to ship those materials to the factory, and someone had to figure out how to configurate the machines in the factory to make them, and the list goes on
every bit of soulless junk available has involved a whole bunch of people not only to design and make but then to pack and send and deliver and sell (not to mention marketing and package design and webshop/catalogue design and maintenance and warehouses etc etc etc)
(also btw, I know no one thinks about this but the machines in factories that mass produce your stuff? those machines are man made. a human designs those machines and then other humans put them together and then someone ships them and someone puts them together in a building built by people and THEN they can start mass producing and even then humans are often involved in a lot of the steps even if they're not directly making the product.)
idk it's just so easy to dismiss products as soulless useless junk or to just simply not think about the sheer amount of human ingenuinety and effort and work by so many people that goes into getting your silly little everyday use product to your house. it's really made me appreciate and respect all these things so much more to really think about all the people and the resources involved before it actually gets to me. things are so precious and these production systems are so complex and fragile and we don't treat most things with nearly as much reverence and respect as we should (myself included)
also once you start thinking of these things and think about the billions of products being made every day and the amount of resources they use it absolutely boggles your mind and suddenly the whole "earth overshoot day" thing makes SO much more sense

i posted in detail once about how it feels like it's much more rare to some across sam fans who actually enjoy sam for sam but like. in the same vein it's interesting how over time, despite being in a very sam-centric part of the fandom since day one, my participation here has made me self conscious about the fact that i like sam. like i find myself censoring what i post about to minimise the likelihood of my posts reaching anyone apart of the majority audience

no girl tell us what you think about jegulily!! im so here for it (tone is weird but I mean that genuinely, I don't ship them so I'm not here to be weird)
dw bae ur tone is fine ! (i’ve been waiting for an ask like this 💀) i think jegulily is... yeah its…. like usually as long as its legal idgaf as long as shippers portray their characters right but regulus fans are literally incapable 😭🙏 WHY WOULD U PAIR A MUGGLEBORN AND A BLOOD SUPREMACIST IM SO DONE WITH DIS FANDOMMMM!! that actually goes for a lot of lily ships like bartylily as well (no clue where that came from either but it’s equally as stupid lmfao).
and jegulily just feels like shoving in lily because people feel bad for ditching her, or shoving in regulus because some people like jily and jegulus and want them (for some reason) to coincide even though it makes zeroooo sense for it to. like, idk if i said this with jegulus before (i yap sm on this account i forget what i say), but like it, jegulily can be done well if a realistic dynamic is taken into account, but the marauders fandom is allergic to nuance and so just chalks up everything regulus does and believes to his neglectful homelife. hes not all-bad, sure, i do feel bad for him, but im nowhere close to shipping him with a woman whos part of the people hes trying to eradicate, or with her man who purposefully went against all pureblood tradition (which is such a large part of james’ character— he is a pureblood that chooses to be seperate from that culture hellooooo plz wake uppppp).
marauders fandom has a chronic “i can fix him” mentality when it comes to wizard neo nazis, i have never understood it. but thats a topic for another day.
jegulily should be filled with envy, toxicity and prejudice stop nerfing it to be some fluffy feel-good polyamorous stable marriage where they raise harry together. yall are looking over the potential. this ship has blood and guts in it plz act like it or else idk what to say 😭 if it doesnt end with at least one of them getting murdered i dont want it.

did anne have the motto "me and mine" some time? i don't hear much discourse on it compared to the grudge one
oh, i've seen discourse about it...
(ahem,)
tracy borman (recently) cites a secondary source (book, published 20c) for this motto, but as i don't have access to that, i don't know what his source is...
"The falcon was often painted in silver, with a gold crown and sceptre, standing on a gold trunk out of which spouted red and white roses and the words 'Mihi et mea' ('Me and mine' or 'me and my love') ." Pinches, J.H. and R.V., the Royal Heraldry of England (London, 1974) p.146

Enough time has passed and everyone's wrote their thought pieces about it so I'm gonna chip in with a little bit of my own.
NMH3 is kind of ass in spite of its limitations, not because of them. The priorities are all over the place.
The gameplay loop becomes incredibly repetitive very quickly. I've seen people try to play word games about the semantics of a hallway of enemies across multiple screens being the exact same as a gauntlet in one room, but at least the fucking environment changes instead of being the exact maybe 8 rooms over the course of 100 possible battles.
There's little in the realm of unlocks. You can play the game start to finish without even touching the chip crafting system or the stats tree. No new moves, death glove chips or weapons. All you really need is to raise your attack to deal with the same enemies with just a larger health pool later in the game. Your kit doesn't change from start to finish.
The open world does fucking nothing for me. You could have made one map with less to explore but more to interact with, instead of five barren and flat maps with nothing to do. I know why this is, but I'll get to that in a bit.
The narrative is significantly weaker than TSA which is a huge shame. I'm imagining that they didn't want the characters to be so wordy in fully voice acted cutscenes like they were in TSA, but I would have loved to see more of the IBM style cutscenes if it meant getting to know more about the characters. Everyone just feels so underwritten so you have to fill in the blanks with your own preconceived notions and the stereotypes they're supposed to convey, something people give NMH2 shit for doing with its characters.
Fu and Damon are NOT compelling characters, one's a brat and the other one is a boring evil CEO archetype. They have zero depth, and for the time that they do give them on screen, all they do is bitch about Travis or everyone around them. Travis doesn't seem even interested in either of them beyond killing them for being annoying. Badman was just fridged to establish Fu as a threat, as if fucking killing every single civilian wasn't enough.
The stuff with Henry could have been interesting if the story had given it any kind of significance or time to breathe. I'm with Travis on that one, I really don't fucking care anymore. There's a giant space alien ship up there dude, that seems a little more important right now than our sad crybaby backstory that will go nowhere because NMH4 is never getting made.
And lastly, I think this game is the most suffocated by all the pop culture references. The premise of the game is a reference, the intro of the game is a reference, many of the bosses, side missions and characters are references, the final boss is a reference. All of this is cool in small bits, but it makes me feel like NMH3 has no real identity of it's own. Which leads me to this conclusion:
Suda should really have doubled down and made something weird and different again. Instead we got a game that is flanderizing No More Heroes itself. People like the open world of 1, boom, open world. People hated the combat of TSA, here's 100 fights. Look, it's the mowing grass minigame. Look, it's Destroyman. Look, it's Henry. Look it's a Marvel reference. Look, it's a Miike reference.
It just feels like the weakest of all the games to me. It tries to do a lot, and what it does is not very good. I don't hate it, I've beaten it a couple of times. I just feel like it wasted a lot of it's potential appealing to the loud majority instead of just being a smaller but better experience, but that's just me.

Wanted to send an ask as well to hopefully provide some distraction from…recent events.
Are there any parts of world building in the TF IDW universe that you wish were explored/expanded upon more? Or that you want to explore in your writing? Like certain aspects of pre-war Cybertron, cybertronian culture, post-war Cybertron, etc?
Okay this is actually perfectly timed for a rant I wanted to go on about the way mnemosurgery is written in IDW1 because I hate how JRO basically made it an ontologically evil field of medicine both intrinsically and in terms of the average person who does it, like
First of all I want to preface this by saying I'm not accusing JRO of having any particular beliefs, this is just my commentary on how things came off and how his writing style contributes to both virtues and flaws in his writing. So I might say "he's basically saying this" but in the sense of "unfortunate implications, accidental or purposeful, in his writing."
But like... it makes me so mad because the worldbuilding around mnemosurgery kind of makes no sense to me? It seems like a really fucking wasted opportunity to cast basically every mnemosurgeon in the continuity as evil and to make it so that even just doing mnemosurgery is basically a toxic, destructive act that will literally kill you? Honestly, I don't think JRO even came up with mnemosurgery as like, "here's a thing that exists in this world and how it works" so much as, he took a character-first approach to writing (as he always does) and wrote mnemosurgery to work whatever way would work best for Chromedome and other character-related conflicts and plot points.
Like, mnemosurgery can view/alter memories from a living person but from a dead person it can only get moments from right before death. Makes sense. Mnemosurgery slowly kills you every time you do it??? Uh... honestly that comes off more as a handwave to make it so that any time the LL needs information they can't just needle it straight out of whoever's mind they need bc of course Chromedome can only do it when it's really important after all. Mnemosurgery... is only ever used for brainwashing people? Like, literally every mnemosurgeon except Chromedome is evil (and cartoonishly so, for Trepan and Sunder, like literally unredeemable monsters in every way) and any time they actually enjoy their field of medicine it's bc they're a sadist that likes to manipulate and oppress people? Kind of... uncreative.
Mnemosurgery is ADDICTIVE?? You're addicted to needling people's brains because mnemosurgery is ontologically evil and then it literally kills you? Okay like... do I even need to explain how tone-deaf it is to incorporate addiction of all things into the worldbuilding here? "You're an addict which makes you dangerous to society. The good ones stop doing the addictive thing because they're morally strong/care about others/aren't hedonists, but the bad ones who only care about doing their drug of choice are evil because the fact that they don't quit shows that they don't care about other people and OF COURSE the main/only fate that awaits addicts is their inevitable death by their own addiction!" Like, we get enough of that shit in real life, JRO. Did you really have to take an already heavily stigmatized condition like ADDICTION and slap it onto your ontologically evil mnemosurgery where the evil ones are evil because they love abusing/manipulating people and don't care enough about dying to stop being addicted to mnemosurgery? Come the fuck on.
Like, I understand that "the science of studying/altering memories" is heavily laden with nightmare fuel as is, and I don't have a problem with that (and stuff like the Institute) because the mind/memories are an intrinsic part of personhood, so any scientific field around it (or any government that wants to sponsor it) will abuse that knowledge just like with any other field of medicine. But to use human examples, why the fuck does mnemosurgery have to be inherently evil? What about stuff like Alzheimer's that degrades ppl's memories to the point of not even remembering a few seconds ago? Wouldn't it be beautiful if mnemosurgery could help with that? What about psychological issues where maybe people with intense PTSD/trauma/etc could have their worst memories be removed/dulled so that they become mentally stable enough for psychiatric/therapeutic interventions to become effective? What if someone has a TBI and wants help recovering the memories they lost?
What about non-scary, non-medicinal applications of mnemosurgery? What if someone just really treasures the memory of a particular day with their best friend and visits a mnemosurgery every couple years so that information creep doesn't slowly alter their memories of that precious day? What if it was possible for mnemosurgeons to intensify memories, so that maybe someone could have a happy memory intensified and think of it any time they're sad, struggling, having mental health struggles, etc? What if mnemosurgeons could take/copy memories from people's brains and convert them to video format in a way that other people could watch it? Imagine the sheer potential present in that when it comes to preserving history through literal firsthand testimonials of what happened! What if a mnemosurgeon could transfer memories from one person to another-- what kinds of breakthroughs in empathy, communication, and understanding others could happen if you could LITERALLY see a conflict from another person's perspective? In those ways, mnemosurgeons would basically be able to act as a hybrid of doctor, psychologist, diplomat, mediator, and archivist all in one!
But no... instead we just got "Mnemosurgery is evil and pretty much only used for brainwashing, 99.8% of all mnemosurgeons are evil creeps, oh by the way it's also addicting and will literally kill you if you do it too much." SMFH.
#squiggle answers#meta#idk if my contempt for the addiction part comes off strongly enough. like#as it is addiction is already spun as a moral failing by ppl who only care about getting high and not about hurting themselves/others#so like. why would you take addiction and apply it as an element of worldbuilding where indulging that addiction literally makes you evil#(or rather where the only ppl who continuously indulge their addiction are evil and just like doing it)#you wanna know something? IRL more addicts get sober than die of overdoses. ODing and being addicted forever is THE MINORITY#BEING AN ADDICT DOESN'T DOOM YOU TO DYING BY YOUR OWN SUPPOSED VICES AND LACK OF SELF CONTROL#getting clean is THE NORM and not the exception! so why in the hell would you write it into your fictional story#and make it so that not only are most of these addicts evil people but they'll also all inevitably die bc of their addiction???#this sort of worldbuilding literally propagates the idea that addicts are doomed to die in the majority of cases (patently untrue)#and like frames the ppl who are addicted as basically being evil and choosing to continue needling people#that's not how real life addiction works. like at all. irl addicts don't destroy their health w drugs bc they love doing it#but yeah in general JRO kind of has this issue with black and white morality. you see it pop up everywhere in his writing#his depiction of mnemosurgery comes off as one of those trademark JRO#'here is your sign that this character is evil and unredeemable bc they do this thing that's inherently evil'#kind of things. and as someone recently getting into studying addiction as a social issue it sucks ass

(throws them into a modern AU)
So since Ymber wouldn't be a deity there are some things he lacks physically - such as no pointed ears and no bright blue undertones to his hair. Just the basic blue. (does he dye it in a modern AU ? who knows) Also while he doesn't have a collar to symbolize his servitude to humans I still think he should have a choker.
I had some help a while back brainstorming how there would be some form of "superior" dynamic could still exist and I really liked the idea given that he's a famous architect. (he does design all constructs for his city as a deity so it checks out - he likes buildings) And Deacon just admires all the guy's works and never expects to run into him but of course they do! Gotta have a very awkward "oh it's you I'm going to melt into the earth" and "I have no idea who you are but we should hang out".
Sooo Deacon still just really admires Ymber and feels like they're on totally different levels and doesn't understand why Ymber would want to associate with him since he's just a "boring human".
