idk but at some point in the past couple of years I started really thinking about the amount of very human work that still goes into everything we own even if it's factory made. like, someone at some point had the idea to add a foot pedal to trash cans. someone decided to add fun lights to electric water kettles so you can see the water boil. someone designed the sticker with the picture of a pizza that's on my oven door. someone took that picture of the pizza. Ssomeone (lots of people actually) designs basic ikea furniture. someone (also, again, lots of people actually) designs all those silly or boring or cliche postcards. (well, not all of them anymore because AI but up until recently every single postcard ever that you could buy was, technically, a small piece of art made by a human). and even after having these ideas, someone had to actually engineer the foot pedal and then someone had to find the material to make them and someone has to ship those materials to the factory, and someone had to figure out how to configurate the machines in the factory to make them, and the list goes on
every bit of soulless junk available has involved a whole bunch of people not only to design and make but then to pack and send and deliver and sell (not to mention marketing and package design and webshop/catalogue design and maintenance and warehouses etc etc etc)
(also btw, I know no one thinks about this but the machines in factories that mass produce your stuff? those machines are man made. a human designs those machines and then other humans put them together and then someone ships them and someone puts them together in a building built by people and THEN they can start mass producing and even then humans are often involved in a lot of the steps even if they're not directly making the product.)
idk it's just so easy to dismiss products as soulless useless junk or to just simply not think about the sheer amount of human ingenuinety and effort and work by so many people that goes into getting your silly little everyday use product to your house. it's really made me appreciate and respect all these things so much more to really think about all the people and the resources involved before it actually gets to me. things are so precious and these production systems are so complex and fragile and we don't treat most things with nearly as much reverence and respect as we should (myself included)
also once you start thinking of these things and think about the billions of products being made every day and the amount of resources they use it absolutely boggles your mind and suddenly the whole "earth overshoot day" thing makes SO much more sense
#this is just me rambling about things other people probably figured out like 10 years ago but shush#idk man does it ever blow your mind just thinking about things like this#I was knitting earlier and thinking about how someone had to raise the sheep and sheer them#and then the wool had to be processed and cleaned and dyed and spun and packaged and shipped#and photographed and put onto webshops and catalogues#and the needles have to be designed and materials sourced and shipped and then the needles made and shipped#and man#there is SO MUCH stuff in the world#I'm just in awe at the sheer amount of STUFF in the world#this is not a pro-minimalism thing btw#just something I think about sometimes#anyway okay moving on now bye

Shameless holiday Etsy store plug!
It's that time of year again! Crafters, if you're looking for leather thimbles, I got you.
I've never been able to use metal thimbles and it was always a source of frustration because needles start to hurt your finger pretty quickly. A couple of years ago I learned how to make leather thimbles and it changed my sewing and embroidery game entirely. When I got a stack of leather offcuts, though, I ended up with way more material than I needed, so I started making extras and selling them. I started having fun with the kinds of leather I worked with and incorporating fun, colorful designs, and now I stock all sorts in my Etsy store:

I only use reclaimed leather scraps from other Etsy sellers who I've built personal relationships with, several of whom also use reclaimed leather before selling their own offcuts to me. Each thimble comes wrapped in tissue paper, packing slips are printed on recycled paper, and shipped in unbleached envelopes with labels made from recycled materials.
Whether these are your thing or not, I hope you'll keep independent artisans in mind when you're buying gifts this season! They work hard, are underpaid, and need your support more than corporations.
(Also, if you see an Etsy ad on google or in the ad space of a website, don't click on it! Search for the Etsy store's name through Etsy instead. When you make a purchase after clicking an advertising link, Etsy takes a percentage and keeps doing so every time you go back to that store. Etsy already takes 25%-33% of sellers' profits in fees, don't help them take more! Links like the above that are embedded in an individual person's post are fine, just look out for ads on the side or bottom of websites, blogs, and social media pages, as well as google ads.)

Persuasion (2022)
The Georgian era costume drama will always be as much an obsession of Hollywood and the British studio system as are the World Wars and Westerns. We will see adaptations of the works of the Brontë sisters and Jane Austen until the end of time. But as with our current crop of Revisionist Westerns, recent takes on the material have sought to say that, yes, this is still content for today. Autumn de Wilde captured effervescent female proclivities in a vibrant palette with her whip-smart take on Emma and Armando Iannucci’s satirical take on David Copperfield demonstrated how the failed grind of the “hustle” has been in place for centuries. Grading by this meter stick, Carrie Cracknell’s iteration of Persuasion falls short. It certainly reaches for these highs. Where Emma uses subtly modern silhouettes and aesthetics in its costume design, this Austen adaptation casts a wide net in costume design and seeks to put its characters in compromising situations. Copperfield brilliantly folds in on its own literary source by emphasizing in its structure how it is a story within a story. Persuasion opts for direct address, leaning on Dakota Johnson’s raw charisma to leverage its social commentary. But all the same, it doesn’t quite thread the needle. Anne is funny and winning, the situations she is thrust into ridiculous in their mannerisms. And yet we’re expected to weather countless Millenialisms like “I’m thriving” paired off with Anne pounding wine straight from the bottle or countless numerical ratings of eligible bachelors. Anne as a woman outside of her own time is winning enough; let her glance knowingly to the audience every now and again, bring them into her world as a means of release. Extra piling on of that sentiment just causes the ship to founder. All’s I’m saying is, let me look into Dakota Johnson’s eyes more.
As performance elevates this particular angle, so does performance lead to its demise. Again, Dakota Johnson is faultless. She seems exactly on the wavelength that the film needs her to be, just as self-aware as the script calls for. Always perfect, Richard E Grant is on a similar level, just as flighty and overbearing as that sort of patriarch ought to be. The issue comes more with the boyfriends. Wentworth, the object of Anne’s desires, is doe-eyed and giving that Jon Snow energy, but is he supposed to be in on the joke? Is Anne supposed to be self-aware and yet fall for some sort of Navy himbo? He says the right things, but just as often plays the weird sulky layabout who would take to the sea at any moment. His competition comes in Anne’s cousin Mr Elliot (ew British gentry marriage customs are gross), who just plays out chad-bro vibes and yet Anne falls for him at least a bit. At least they’re better than Louisa, who just yeets herself off a pier onto the concrete because apparently trust falls weren’t a thing yet.

Hello, tooooooootally anonymous ask here :D "I wish you would write a fic where…Three tries out different hobbies"!
I wrote this in under an hour, just to set expectations. Also, I am not sure I know Three’s voice well enough.
I’m standing next to a wall just inside one of ART’s recreation rooms, monitoring a situation. My assessment: Iris and Amena are playing a card-based game with very low stakes. The odds of Amena winning hover just around 11.3%.
I decide that perhaps I can assist. Ratthi told me earlier that a hobby might help me adjust, and this is a hobby according to the ship’s encyclopedia.
So, I walk over to where the two humans are seated across from each other and sit down on the floor next to Amena.
“You owe me ten credits,” the young woman tells her companion. “Are you interested in learning poker, Three?”
“Ratthi recommended hobbies.”
“Yeah. Hobbies are great for passing the time. All right, so…” Amena explains the rules while Iris procures more finger foods. They appear to be using vegetable crisps as a form of currency. I was not expecting this.
I can keep a lot of numbers in my head, and they are using a single deck of regular playing cards. It takes a matter of minutes to calculate permutations and start taking guesses at the contents of the humans’ hands.
When I say as much as Amena and Iris, the older human pouts. “You’re not supposed to use math. That takes all the fun out of it.”
“Also, ewww, math.” Amena pretends to gag. “Maybe a different, more relaxing hobby? Um, want to see a magic trick?”
She shuffles the cards and pretends to pull one from behind my ear. I can see her hand through both my eyes and the drone cameras.
“Tada!” Amena says.
“You had a card up your sleeve,” I say.
Iris slaps herself on the forehead. “I don’t think that’s going to work when it has eyes everywhere.”
Amena is not deterred. “I know! Second Mom brought an embroidery kit. Wanna see? It’s not cards, and it’s not quick, but it’s super relaxing when I don’t fall asleep. And I bet you have steady hands. Like SecUnit.”
There’s a momentary pause. I nod, so the human gets up and leaves the room. While she’s gone, Iris says, “Why don’t you watch media like Peri and SecUnit?”
“Watching media does not appear to be what Dr. Ratthi meant when he said hobbies.”
“I think he meant for you to do whatever you find interesting. That’s what hobbies are for.” Iris produces a display surface from her purse and shows me a couple of images. “My hobby is photography. See, I took these pictures.”
They’re black and white, and beautifully arranged. I don’t recognize most of the source material. One is of a large, furry fauna chasing what appears to be one of its own appendages. Another features Iris’s fathers, in a large room full of empty chairs.
“What do you do with them?” I ask.
“I don’t do anything with them. Show them to Seth occasionally, I guess? They’re not for anyone else.”
Amena comes back just as Iris is putting her surface away. “Here you go,” she says and hands me a bag.
“I can show you how to work with a needle if you want, but you can probably just ask Perihelion. I bet it has a book on it.”
I take the bag and decide to make a tactical retreat. “Thank you, Amena and Iris.”
“You’re welcome, Three. I hope you find something you like to do.” Iris grabs the card deck and stars shuffling. “Your turn to grab snacks,” she tells Amena as I leave the room.
---
A few hours later, I am sitting on my bunk in a room that has been designated for my use for the duration of this trip. I open the bag and look at the contents. The sheer number of needles concerns me. Why does Dr. Mensah provide so many sharp objects to her child? Is this an assassination attempt?
I decide it must not be because Perihelion would not allow bloodshed on its decks. Unless Murderbot/SecUnit/<hardware address> is the cause.
Perihelion is in the feed. I can feel it. Sewing is not complicated, it tells me and downloads instructions for me. I look at the available thread. These are colorful and non-standard. Any SecSystem with good heuristics would be suspicious if I used these.
Pick any two colors, the ship says.
I pick four colors out of the mix almost at random: purple, white, gray, and black.
With Peri hovering in the feed, I thread the purple one through one of the needles and create my first stitch. I’m learning the words as I go.
---
Seven hours later, I am almost done decorating the small, round piece of fabric attached to my hoop. There is someone at the door. I can see Amena through the video feed of a drone stationed outside, but even without it, she is not quiet.
“Can I come in?” she asked.
“Yes.” The door slides open. The idea that the human has to ask, and that I can decline is still novel.
A moment later, she’s standing next to me, staring down at the thing I’ve been working on. “Woah. You’re good. You should show this to Second Mom.”
I am reminded of what Iris said.
“Can I see another magic trick?” I ask.
I think I like this new skill, but I think I also like magic tricks. When Amena nods and searches her pockets for a coin, I disconnect from my drones’ visual feeds. I won’t look this time.

Lost Lineage
Dofi hurried in the dark narrow corridors of the ship, in near pitch black darkness. They were surrounded by dead waiters and had to pull all the ship’s electrical power into the fight. He knew his brother Do, the Ship’s Chief Engineer, had designed the ship this way. This was a dragon-slaying ship. Every drop of fuel, every battery, every nuclear engine could reroute its full might into deadly weapons until the enemy was vanquished or the ship rested at the bottom of the sea.
Even now, the ship was loud with constant machine gun fire and thunderous booms from cannons.
His brother Foli was captaining this war at sea. He was the firstborn and the leader of the Aido-Hwedo, destined to be on the Council in the future. Dofi had no such destiny. He was a shadow merchant, supporting his brother in covert actions to protect him from the rear. Dofi kept this vow of secrecy close to his heart. Even though his brother acted like a naive little fool in the sun, he would be there, in the shadows like a ninja, destroying anyone who came at him from the shadows.
Now he felt his brother had played the ultimate fool. He had trusted Grant Baldwin to keep this operation secret and now they were surrounded by ships from the Secret Society. Someone had fired rockets at the dragon being awakened in the sky, awakening him early. How was he supposed to save him from this?
Foli should have known that the sons of that Dark King Betrayer could not be trusted. All four of the quadruplets went to the same school and heard the same stories.
Nidhogg and the White Queen Izanami were inseparable rulers. Together they produced one egg that hatched the ten great serpents into the world. Each one they granted authority over humans. Quetzocoatl, Nuwa, Anima, Minona, Legba, Ouroboros, and the twin headed serpents, Taipan-Typhon and Mawu-Lisa.
For centuries they ruled over humans, some harshly, some more gently. But the Dark King was always fickle and full of suspicious thoughts. The White Queen could take it no longer and rebelled against him. Ouroboros, Mawu-Lisa and Legba agreed. But the White Queen was defeated and her children were forced into hiding from their vengeful father.
They hid among their human hybrids in Africa. But were revealed when war broke out among them. The hybrids of Mawu-Lisa attacked the hybrid city of Ouroboros, but were defeated. In retaliation, Ouroboros devoured Mawu-Lisa. Then, strengthened greatly by the meal, turned on Legba.
Legba fled back to Nidhogg. He hoped to be protected by his father, so he betrayed Ouroboros’s location to him. But Nidhogg killed him anyway, and then went to find Ouroboros. But Ouroboros somehow vanished, him and his people. He was a master of the sacred arts of Nibelungen and could produce them at will. When the forces of Nidhogg arrived, there was nothing left but a crater.
Nidhogg never found Ouroboros and turned on the rest of his children. It didn’t matter how loyal they had been in the past. They were the White Queen’s children and couldn’t be trusted. One by one, every single serpent that had hatched from the egg was destroyed and all their hybrids were slaughtered. In their place, he created the Four Lords and forced them into eternal submission. He erased every vestige of the existence of the original ten and their mother.
Yet, knowing all this, that silly Foli still put his head into the palm of these elites of Cassell College. These sons of the Betrayer King!
“Foli… Foli, I tried to warn you…” The ship was rocking like a tree against the winds and the waves. Every joint groaned as the waves lifted it and shuddered violently as it crashed to the ocean. The sense of vertigo was immense and he put his hand to the wall to steady himself. He was almost there.
He had to protect his brother.
And the key was in his pocket, wrapped in gauze. The vial of that girl’s blood. The girl who wasn’t on the roster of the Action Team. The girl who came from Ace Commissioner parents with no past. Born in a dragonslayer Academy. And yet somehow had no dragonblood according to the dragonblood divination.
His brother originally had this suspicion of her, but he’d discarded it after a little sweet talk from that Betrayer son. But Dofi was not so easily fooled.
He’d reached the end of the corridor and swiped his card; the door slid open to reveal a darkened lab, faintly lit by an alternative power source. At the center was a server rack that blinked green and blue and red like festive lights in the dark. A single laptop controlled it all. On a table, along with a microscope and other tools, there was what looked like a box. Dofi braced himself on the table and pulled out the vial of blood from his pocket.
He carefully opened the metal box. Inside, was a spinning centrifuge. The divining plate could only work based on the Four Lord’s Lineage. If she was not of that line, then the alternative was that she was either human or not of the four lords. And she was not human.
He tucked the vial with trembling hands into the centrifuge and closed it and flipped the switch. The vial began to spin until it was a blur, to break up the blood and reveal the genetic material. The computer here had more than the lineage of the four lords but also of Legba and Mawu-Lisa, the Ancestors of the West African Hybrids.
The lights suddenly started to flicker. Dofi looked up at them as they swung. Their shifting pools of light moved over a scaly clawed foot, like the claw of a dinosaur. When they swung that pool of light away, gleaming eyes peered out from the dark. Those eyes were embedded in a massive dark shadow, about the size of a horse. It crouched on all fours, it’s body stretching into the hallway where he had just been.
Dofi’s heart squeezed painfully in his chest. He had thought he was alone in the corridor, safe and protected by his brother’s stalwart efforts outside, but he was being stalked by this unseen and quiet predator the whole way down. And now he had reached a dead end in every sense.
Unlike his brother, Dofi had no aggressive skills, only the Soul Skill Mirage that could distort his form as he saw fit. But how could he fool someone who had already seen him as he truly was? They faced each other now, each one as they were. Predator and prey.
Normally, he could consider escaping, use his soul skill to frighten the enemy, confuse them, or vanish. But he could not leave this beast in this room and he had to stay here for the results of the DNA test. There was no clever escape this time. Only a fight until the monster was eliminated. He reached behind his back, his hand closing around a weapon there.
Dofi’s eyes moved first to the left, away from the computers. The monster’s limbs tightened and it rushed in, thinking Dofi was making his move. The split second error was all that was needed. Dofi pulled a grenade from behind him, yanked out the pin and threw it into the beast’s mouth, just as it closed. The creature’s teeth pierced the metal shell. Corrosive liquid, poisonous to dragons sprayed out under intense pressure right down the monster’s throat.
With the grenade stuck on his tooth, it could only shake its head. The silver solution spread all over the floor and under its claws and it slipped and fell. Its screaming as the solution burned its skin rattled the walls. Blood oozed from its mouth in a steady stream coloring the liquid on the floor. The vapors stung its eyes and sent blood weeping from there. Its scales loosened and hung from the skin of its neck.
But its target was gone. Disappeared from the room. Its nostrils flared to try to catch a scent of him, and then it coughed, jaw hanging open. A thin blade, like the foil of a fencer, had pierced its throat from the side. In comparison to its thick neck, it appeared like a hypodermic needle through the gap in its eroded scales. It wasn’t even a hole big enough to bleed through, but inside the throat, the jugular vein had been punctured, and the brain was quickly being starved of oxygen.
With such a precise attack, there was no need for a strong Soul Skill or Physical Strength.
Dofi revealed himself to be holding the end of the blade, having hidden himself when his Soul skill while the beast struggled with the grenade. He held a cloth to his face to guard himself from the noxious fumes, but he knew it was too late. Such powerful poison would be the end of him as well. Already, his skin was starting to turn soft and sore. It burned and turned a whitish grey as he staggered back to the laptop.
The Genetic test results were completed.
According to the blood test, this girl was a descendent of Nidhogg, as all dragons were. But unlike all dragons, she was also a descendent of the Whtie Queen Izanami. As he suspected, she really was of the stock of the original ten serpents out of the great egg.
She was not a descendent of Mawu-Lisa. She was not a descendant of Legba.
Leaning against the table, Dofi’s vision swam. He picked up the phone and put his brother on the speed dial. Despite the desperation of the situation, his brother picked up immediately.
“Dofi! What is it? Where are you?”
“Foli… my dearest brother. I have completed the investigation of the girl.”
“What? Dofi, I told you to stop. Where are you now? What are you doing?”
“The girl is of a Lost Lineage. She is not of Legba… or Mawu-Lisa.” He coughed and felt like he was drooling uncontrollably. But when he looked down, his shirt was stained red.
“Lost lineage…?” His brother’s voice was still in his head. “Where is the girl? Where are you?”
But Dofi couldn’t speak any more.

As Jidné got out of the castle, her stomach plummeted to her feet and her legs transformed into limp noodles—barely doing their job and instead dragged her along in every step. It was gradually sinking into her that the person who gave her the job was one of the most feared figures among the Jedi. She clutched her abdomen, crumpling the center of her jacket while waiting for the entry ramp to unfurl.
Not wanting to look back over her shoulder, she knew that she’d have the safety and privacy she needs within her vessel: a Dynamic-class freighter that she personally retrofitted and anointed the Crescent Scarab. It was a fine work of art that she greatly took pride in, so much so, that she has modified everything to her liking. She darted to the lounge of the ship, lousily putting down the canister and then splaying herself over the sofa.
Coming from the cockpit, an ID seeker droid acknowledged her arrival and greeted her. Its multiple claws on its tentacles flowed and twitched as its single eye panned left and right, scanning its owner.
“Hey, Eye-Dee Three,” Jidné greeted back.
The droid named ID-3, formerly Imperial property of another probe droid variant, is the only other passenger in the Scarab besides the pilot, Jidné herself. The droid chittered in its raspy, monotonous string of notes as it hovered closer towards its owner.
“Yeah, I’m okay, just… felt like jelly is all,” she brings her hand on the top of the black droid’s flat dome for a head.
The young bounty hunter detached the holster from her belt and set it down on the table, right next to the canister of credits. She stared at both objects for a good long minute, contemplating and pondering her strategy on how she’ll begin with this contract. Jidné reached out for her weapon holster first, taking it with both hands and then unbuttoning the flap—a polished, silver emitter pokes out of the lining.
She gently tilted the holster downward until an enough length of the weapon inside slid out. She caught the shaft before it could completely fall off. She rolled the hilt across her hand, feeling and tracing for the etchings, curves, and dips of the design. She held it high and proud, in the same way as she finished constructing it, the tassel that she knotted around the ring of her pommel caught her eye. Two strands, unequal in length, dangling at the very end of the hilt. The longer strand had seven turquoise beads, at the end of its thread is a cluster of feathers—three to be precise—though the wear and tear was very obvious; the short one had four beads of the same color but lacks a feather.
“Feathers are almost gone,” she hummed, fiddling the remaining tufts.
Her heart skipped a beat—it always does, even though she has done this many times. In her hand, the cold metal of the lightsaber’s sleeve stung the nerves of her palm. A small, somewhat satisfied smile curled along her lips—the weapon had brought her good memories, but also nightmares—and that smile became fleeting like a comet. Her thumb ran across the metal finish of the body and found the switch, the idea of igniting it was seductive—a temptation that she has no strength to fight back.
The snarl of the ignition took her breath away. A vibrant purple blade bore out of the emitter, its glow colored the paleness of her cheeks and reflected against the gloss of her brown irises.
“Jedi, huh?” she muttered to herself.
“Beeee-deee, trill?”
“That’s right, ID, we’re after a Jedi,”
Jidné sighed, and then switched her saber off before tucking it back into the pouch.
When her legs finally regained their strength, she walked to the cockpit and beckoned her droid companion—who still hovered close to her side—and joined her in the seat. As she put herself into work mode, she recalled the very helpful detail that Darth Vader gave. She breathed out a resigned sigh that drowned in the hollow hum of the Scarab’s engine revving up.
In a galaxy that stretched a thousand times more than the eye could see, how is she going to narrow down to finding a single Jedi?
“Say, ID, how likely are we to stumble into a redheaded Jedi on the run?”
“Beee… chirp!”
Jidné chuckled at the response, “I figured as much.”
With little base information she has, she knew she had to be resourceful. Lately, she’s picked up murmurs from Baz’s stronghold—as well as the gossips in the cantinas she frequented in Modala—that bounty hunters were also after a Jedi, solely for the bounty on his head, not because Darth Vader had hired others behind Jidné’s back or the other way around.
While gossip wasn’t exactly the best source material, she had to make do. The young bounty hunter swallowed her pride and entered the coordinates of her first stop.
Upon seeing the coordinates on the computer, ID-3 erratically chittered in protest.
“We have no other choice, buddy. They’re the closest we can get to the target,”
ID-3 lowed in disagreement, submitting to Jidné’s decision and continued assisting her in the ship, much to his chagrin. His owner sensed the disdain and petted its flat dome again.
“Don’t worry, you’ll stay close to me, right?”
“Beeep!”
Jidné smiled and boosted the ship’s throttle, following their course to Ordo Eris.
——————————————————–
Jidné piloted the ship with great care, evading the rock debris and asteroids that floated within the orbit. Her destination was dead ahead: one of the biggest rocks in the field, a needle of the infrastructure built within, a fiery orange glow encircled the central crater’s inner rim.
“I really don’t like this place,” she complained to no one in particular—except herself.
She slowed down the speed of the freighter until she got close enough to the outpost. A red blip flashed on her screen and vanished seconds after spotting it. There was a noticeable gaping crack of the arena’s ray shield wall that protects the outpost from the elements outside the planetoid, the young hunter added that to her list of questions once she lands.
The Scarab docked on the empty arena. It wasn’t entirely new for her see it devoid of animals and sentient creatures fighting for dear life, though it was a better sight than the deafening chorus of wild cheers mingling with animal roars. The Scarab’s landing gears disturbed the floor of the arena, creating clouds of sand around its pads, the exit ramp unfurled for Jidné and ID-3 to alight the ship.
A trio of bounty hunters approached her, there were more standing by the arena’s walls as well. Shortly after, they gave way for their Umbaran boss clad in silken, luxurious violet robes—he stuck out like a sore thumb around the orange light that filled his colosseum. For someone with sallow, prominent cheekbones and paper-white skin, he moved quite flamboyantly—contrast to his sickly appearance—perfectly matching up to the vibrancy of his rich, violet robes.
“We need to talk, Sorc,” the bounty hunter abruptly began, not having time for the dilly-dallying.
“Well, well,” he spoke in a singsong manner. He rubbed his goatee as he swayed. “It’s been way too long, dove. Come, come!”
Jidné didn’t come closer, even though Sorc beckoned her with his fingers covered in rings, so much so that the fingernails were the only ones exposed.
“Oh come on now, little dove, you act like we didn’t have history together!”
The bounty hunter rolled her eyes and shook her head, “Don’t call me that. Plus, that history was basically me being your delivery girl of animals and captives. It’s no big contract, just a sideline.”
“Ah, but you gave me a lot of good stuff for my arena! When you worked for me back in the day, I never ran out of customers—always looking for some mauling, goring, and all that crazy stuff!”
Completely uninterested of Sorc’s rambling about his business of arena fights between humanoids, humans or sentient beings against wild, senseless animals, Jidné cut to the chase.
“I don’t have time for stories, Sorc,”
“Of course, you aren’t. But, you know, intel—”
“Isn’t your expertise,” Jidné finished the sentence, even though that wasn’t exactly what Sorc was going to say. She put her hands over her waist, “But you’re the only one I know who could give me just that. Think of it as a compliment.”
The Umbaran pursed his lips, he opened his palm right in front of her. Fishing two gold chips out of her pocket and then tossing them to the hand, his fingers greedily caged the money into his fist and hurriedly tucked them into his robes.
“Always so hasty,” he rolled his eyes and smacked his lips. “Alright, what do you wanna know?”
“A boy. Redheaded Jedi.”
Sorc Tormo purred a long “Ahh” and wagged his finger at the girl, a mischievous grin stretching ear-to-ear on his pale white face.
“Handsome?”
Jidné’s eyebrows pulled together, creasing her forehead.
“I don’t see how that’s relevant, but okay, I guess?”
A throaty snicker rumbled from the Umbaran, still wagging his finger at the girl in a more teasing manner—it was almost childlike.
The surrounding bounty hunters subtly showed signs of hostility towards Jidné, her eyes already caught their movements with the slightest of side-glances: the ones standing closest to them were tightening their grips around their blasters, the ones who were a little far away but still within earshot had their hands slowly wandering towards their holsters.
She got the hint. Apparently, the Jedi was a prize indeed.
“Now that is an interesting subject—even for you, sweetheart!” Sorc Tormo guffawed, leaning to his knees while keeping his eyes on her.
She pointed at the damage with her thumb over her shoulder, without needing any words to make out the question, Sorc Tormo immediately has the answer.
“Ah!” he clicked his tongue. “We got a little… caught by surprise.”
“One hell of a surprise, if you ask me,”
“Oh honey, you don’t even know the start of it!” he swatted the air with his hand.
“He did that, didn’t he?”
Sorc Tormo’s boisterous guffaw startled the young girl as she awkwardly watched him laugh straight at her face. When he still hasn’t gotten all of the laughter of his system, he’s still chortling as he swings his arm at the air.
“Aww, ya shoulda see the baby go! Slashing away and getting chocked up by my pets and men. Crowd was wild, I had a full box that day!”
“You don’t know where he is, but you’ve seen him,” she insinuated.
Sorc got carried away with the compulsive need to tell it all, a force of habit, from the way she picked up his words, it was clear as the eye-straining color of his gaudy robes—the redheaded Jedi has engaged with the Haxion Brood.
“And you’re after him, too?”
“Hey, it pays the bills, sweetie!” he throws his arms to his sides, solely focusing on the topic of money. “Honestly, I could care less about the kid, but knowing the price on that pretty head of his, you really can’t blame us tryna make honest work, eh?”
“He’s mine!” she snarled, taking two steps towards Sorc.
Immediately, his bounty hunters became defensive of him, stopping her in her path by pointing the barrels of their rifles at her. That didn’t scare her, though, she takes another step close to the point that the holes of the blaster press against her body. She shot a dirty look at the pair of bounty hunters.
“If there’s one thing I hate: it’s competition.” She added.
Sorc chuckled, unintimidated and kept up his lurid façade, he gestured his hand in a circular motion that covered Jidné’s front.
“From what I could read in all this defensiveness, I strongly deduce that you have a contract out to get him.”
“Good job, man, do you want a prize for that?” she sardonically rebutted, keeping up with the Umbaran’s sarcasm with her own flavor.
There was no constructive reply from Sorc, other than another throaty chuckle. The girl’s patience is being stretched thin by the minute, not until she’s satisfied of filling the gaps that Darth Vader left in the job description.
Her sarcasm was quickly replaced with an imposing snarl through the clench of her teeth, “What else do you know?”
“He travels with that little gray grub that owes me a shitton of money!”
“A lot of little grubs owe you a shit-wad of money, Tormo, you’re gonna have to be much more specific.”
The syndicate boss sighed, often forgetting that this little bounty hunter was a persistent one—too persistent for her age rather. He shooed away his bounty hunters from being human barricades between Jidné and himself. They eased up, leaving a gap for Sorc and Jidné to converse with less distractions, but they still kept an eye on the girl—wary of her movements as she’s already starting to be aggressive.
“Alright, alright, fine! Your redhead is with the ship called the Mantis—it’s an S-161, you’ve been a mechanic part-time, right? You should know what that looks like. Now, for the grub that baby boy drives around with—he’s a stubby, little guy. Kinda old, wiry hair, bald on the top.”
“The companion—is he human too?”
“No, that grub is a Lateron. Stout, little thing. Four arms.”
Jidné tossed one last golden chip at Sorc, to which he skillfully caught into his hand; he fluidly slipped it into the inside pocket of his robes, making a soundless clink with the others, as he watched Jidné turn her back at him and walk away.
“Pleasure doing business with you, dove! Don’t be a stranger!”
“I plan to be!” Jidné clapped back before fully disappearing into the ship.
Sorc Tormo watched Jidné prep up the freighter, he even giddily waved goodbye at her to which she repaid with a fed-up rolling of the eye; she ignored him after that, focusing on the dashboard monitors of her ship as she eagerly flies the ship out of the rock. The freighter’s throttle blew at the entire arena—everyone’s capes and coattails flapped and smacked against their legs wildly as Jidné maneuvered the ship to face the gaping crack of the outpost’s wall.
“Are we gunna go after ‘er, boss?” one of the bounty hunters asked.
“Sure. It might be fun to have the baby boy and the baby girl together—they either kill each other or save each other, whatever and whichever works,” Sorc thought out loud, he rubbed his goatee with his ring-covered fingers and a grin stretched across his wrinkled, sallow face. “A ransom… no, a fugitive’s bounty on her head too! Yes, that would be very delicious. Go on now, SHOO!”
All of the bounty hunters dispersed, whooping in glee and greed as they gathered into their crude ships, bringing along the HURID-class droids for added muscle and brawn. Sorc Tormo stood idly in the exact spot he’s been staying in ever since Jidné came until she left, he listened to the barbaric laughter and chatter among his men; that greedy, coy grin never melted in his face—the only thing that ran around his brain was the idea of having sacks upon sacks of credits delivered to his private chambers, rewarded for the joint bounties of the Jedi and Jidné.

Incoming tag game post, where I'm going to be very indecisive about half of my responses.
I was tagged by @eldritch-crone
Thank you for that, I don't get to do these often.
Rules – Answer 11 questions from the person who tagged you, then ask 11 questions of your own and tag users to answer them.
Sadly I must confess that I thought about what 11 questions I could ask, nonstop, for almost two days.
1. If you could get two characters in asoiaf to switch their narratives with each other, who all would it be? Arya and Sansa is probably the standard reply, but I think switching Arya and Sansa's locations, while keeping the overall trajectory of their characters the same, would be really interesting. By which, I mean Sansa's circumstances would be radically different than Arya's, since Sansa's gender presentation isn't going to allow her to fake being a Night's Watch recruit, but an earlier version of the Brotherhood arc would still work and they'd make a good contrast to the tourney knights she met in the first book. So we'd get Sansa in contact with the commoners and petty nobles of her mother's homeland, while traveling with a band of outlaws, and getting her eyes opened to how false the codes of knighthood and nobility are along the way, instead of via Joffrey and his band of thugs, which I think would be neat. While meanwhile Arya is off surrounded by Lannisters, sneaking in and out of the city via the secret passages that only Varys and his spies know about, in a tamer version of her Harrenhal and Braavos arc both, as she develops the skills needed to restore justice for the people of King's Landing and reuinite with her family. There's also a good chance that Syrio lives, if Arya just gets arrested right away, and that Varys starts employing Arya as a spy if she naturally begins developing that skill set anyway (as in OTL), so she could have a fun list of mentor figures.
2. What is your endgame prediction for your favourite character? The prophesied betrayal “for love” is going to be Drogon, betraying Daenerys by disobeying her, in order to save her life. Prophesies like that always have to be the person their subject least expects and would most dread, so I feel like Drogon is the most satisfying option for Dany's final betrayer. And I like the idea of the betrayal for love being something meant genuinely as an act of love, that helps her.
3. What’s the one food item from asoiaf that you’d like to taste? I can't really think of any foods in Westeros that stood out, that didn't sound incredibly bland, and the meat and lamprey dishes probably wouldn't appeal to me anyway. Oberyn's chef makes an egg and pepper dish for Tyrion and Sansa that sounds like menemen, but that's about it, and it's not really unique to asoiaf. I've never really been clear on what Martin is describing when he talks about lemon cakes, though, so I'd be happy to at least see one. I'd be willing to try the locusts if they came in a non-poisoned variety.
4. What’s your favourite song in Westeros, and why? Rains of Castamere. I just think it sounds nice, and its structure seems to have lent cover artists more success in turning it into a real song than with the others.
5. If you could bring back one character from dead, who would it be? Oberyn Martell. I've always thought his early death was a mistake in light of the importance his family plays over the next two books, and I believe his presence in the fourth book would have made the way Martin thrust us into the Dorne plot less jarring for a lot of readers.
We would have also been spared several weird attempts to replace him with off-brand knockoff versions.
6. Which house’s words is the most iconic? Why? In universe, I think House Targaryen's words are treated the same way as we, as fans, tend to treat House Stark's. Between what we see in the fourth novel's prologue, the Dorne arc, and Brienne's adventures in the Crownlands, I see the Targaryen house words having taken on an air of grim promise to one another in the hearts of the masses. We, as readers, might find vowing “fire and blood” a bit strange and off-putting, but it's not any more extra than “winter is coming”/“the North remembers,” and it represents the only hope of justice and liberation that 90% of the people in this setting have.
7. If you could bring one fashion/stylistic choice from Essos to Westeros, what would it be? I love the hats they have in Braavos.
But I also really like how most of Dany's faction shaved their heads between books, presumably because they noticed she didn't have any hair either. In the end I can't really see that catching on in Westeros though, so I have to go with my initial instinct for more nice hats.
8. If you were a character in asoiaf, what do you think your occupation would be? There are some depressing similarities between jobs I've worked in the past, and what the assistant pyromancers are seen recounting of the hazardous chemicals their guild is always losing track of. Right down to some poor sub-auditor doing a routine inventory of a bunch of closets and storage cabinets, and incidentally finding misplaced explosives, pyrophoric liquids, and radioactive materials in strange and unexpected places. = /
9. What’s the one ship in asoiaf, that you wish didn’t happen?
I could live without the Arya/Gendry hints in the books. I can enjoy the show version of Arya/Gendry for their chemistry, but I would definitely be happier without the books' hints that Arya is destined to be romantically involved with a man that she smiled at when she was nine.
10. What’s your favourite quote from asoiaf? That's a bit difficult, upon realizing that most of my favorite lines were actually show only. I enjoy Martin's style of writing, but part of how easy he is to read, I think, prevents many individual lines from really standing out to me as particularly memorable. I liked most of Varys and Ned's last meeting, Ned tried a swallow. “Dregs.” He felt as though he were about to bring the wine back up. “All men must swallow the sour with the sweet. High lords and eunuchs alike. Your hour has come, my lord.” [...] “For fifteen years I protected him from his enemies, but I could not protect him from his friends. What strange fit of madness led you to tell the queen that you had learned the truth of Joffrey’s birth?”
“The madness of mercy,” Ned admitted.
but there's no one line in there that I'd be able to take apart from the whole, and still recognize.
Jon has one line in the first book that stuck with me for how creepy it was, “You’ll be sewing all through winter. When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers.”
but it's inseparable from the source material; it doesn't really work as a quote of its own. The show, on the other hand, had “What do we say to the god of death?” and “That's not a monster, that's just a baby,” which I find more quotable.
11. If you could change one pre-asoiaf event, what would it be? Not a single event, but I would have Daenys the Dreamer be far more active, rather than being limited to a side character in her husband and father's stories, and then vanishing without a trace once she has children. It's really strange to me that a prophet-sorceress, who lives inside of a magic volcano, doesn't turn up in history more often; particularly since, unlike her husband and father, she's actually an important historical figure within the actual asoiaf narrative. Daenys seems to just get shuffled off to her room by the men in her life as soon as she finishes her prophesies, even though dragons were meant to be the great equalizer, among her people, that prevented that kind of thing from happening. The same should go for all of the pre-Dance women of House Targaryen, but given that Daenys played an important role in saving the world, I'd have really liked to have her be active in navigating the post-Doom of Valyria fallout.
My eleven questions:
1. Whose point-of-view do you think is most extraneous to the novels, or whose interiority is least necessary to the story?
2. If you could elevate a supporting character to a secondary point-of-view status, in what book would you have made this change?
3. Which coat of arms/achievement do you think is best designed?
4. Which is your favorite scenery/location description?
5. What would be your favorite city or town to visit?
6. Who is your favorite obscure character? (i.e. that doesn't appear in the show, or that most people would need the wiki to identify)
7. What is your favorite world-building element?
8. Show question: Is there any member of the cast that you'd cast as a different character?
9. Which minor house would you like to know more about?
10. How many books long do you think asoiaf should be in total?
11. What is your favorite religion?
Open to anyone who wants to participate, because I only know five other people who like asoiaf and I don't know if any of them like tag games!

Tools of the Craft: Build Your Sewing Station & Basket
Hello all!
This is probably my favorite part of the start-up process of sewing. Your materials will differ slightly based on whether you’re going to do hand-sewing or machine-sewing. So let’s get started with the materials you’ll need regardless of which method you’ll be using.
General Materials:
• Sewing Storage Container: I have a sewing basket that has built in pin cushions and little organization containers. Some baskets even have little sewing kits in them that can get you started while you’re acquiring your materials.
• Fabric Scissors: extremely important! These differ from general crafting scissors. They’re sharper and better for cutting fabrics. Be sure to never use your fabric scissors on paper or anything other than fabric or thread!
• Snippers: these are special scissors that are small and easy to carry out with you for shipping small threads away.
• Tape Measure: cloth one is best for measuring since you will be measuring curves.
• Hard ruler: great for making straight lines and measurements. You can also buy sewing rulers that are larger and more advanced than a standard 12”.
Cutting Board/Mat: you have to protect your surfaces! These cutting mats typically have measurements printed on them that can help you on the fly if you don't want to get your ruler out
• Pins and a pin cushion (or some storage for pins)
• Sewing Needles
• Sewing thread: there are so many different kinds, you could go mad trying to differentiate between every single brand and its pros and cons. I'd say start with Guterman threads and expand from there.
• Pencils: for marking on fabric (it washes out!) Chalk can also be used if you’d like to invest in some tailor’s chalk.
• Iron & Ironing Board: fabric should be cleaned, laundered, and ironed out before it is sewn onto. Ironing also allows you to press seams so they’re easier to sew and don’t flare out when you’re finished
Additional Materials for Machine-Sewing:
• Bobbins: you can never have too many! Seriously, buy a ton and keep them handy and loaded with all kinds of colors
• Sewing Machine: shop around and see what's the best fit for you. Nowadays there are so many different kinds of sewing machines at a variety of different price points. Joann's and other craft suppliers have quite a few on display that you can look at to see what would be the best fit
• Serger Machine (if you can afford it!): these are great for finishing off seams and really giving it that professional look
The Sewing Station
I think of my sewing station as my little haven of creativity and comfort. When you’re first starting you may not be able to invest in all of the things that can make your space cozy or as organized as possible. But that’s alright! Right now the focus should be on allocating funds on gathering materials that you like and fit you.
Here are some materials that I have slowly integrated into my sewing space that I have loved using:
• Comfy chair (so important!): you’ll be sitting in your chair for hours. Making sure you have proper back support and good comfort levels will make a world of difference.
• Thread & Spool Holders: honestly I find spool holders to be the best method of organization for threads, and I think that they are just absolutely precious as decor!
Crafting Desk or a simple Desk: you need somewhere to work, and there are so many different crafting desks out there that can transform your workstation when it comes to built-in organization and specific designs to fit sewing machines and sewing-specific materials
Ample Lighting: having a nice lamp so you can make sure you're never sewing in the dark or dim light is crucial. This avoids mistakes, eye strain, and even headaches. If you notice that your lighting system doesn't illuminate your workstation the way that you need it to, thrift or buy a small lamp (bendable necks are awesome for this) so you can manipulate all of the lighting you have.
Entertainment Source: when you're grinding out long hours of crafting and sewing, doing it in silence can start to feel pretty bothersome. For those of us who need some kind of background noise going, I'd recommend either using your phone and a nice phone stand and speaker, an Alexa device, or a small television that you can flip on. If you have a laptop, having it available to play a podcast or playlist can be really nice- with the added perk that you can look things up and watch tutorials as well!
As you start building your workstation and sewing supplies, keep in mind that you can always shop secondhand. And as always, as long as you have a spool and thread with a needle and fabric, you can sew! Have fun and create a space that clears your mind and allows the creative energy to come and stay as you design and make some amazing projects.
Happy Sewing! <3
