some brief advice for characters with small scars from a head injury (from my specific experience) since i do see people give these types of scars to characters sometimes

mine is like this for reference:

i didn't receive in-hospital treatment for it even though i lost consciousness i was kicked by a horse, the metal horseshoe is what did it it was a long time ago (over a decade now)

it doesn't effect me much day to day, it is always visible but it has become less prominent over time. certain expressions (anything eyebrow raising especially) make it very obvious.

it is physically raised and lacks pigment.

sensation wise, it used to itch but i haven't felt that for awhile now. if i pay attention when touching it, there's a slight difference in temperature from the rest of my skin. if i scrape it (even just lightly, like scratching with a fingernail) it feels like its bleeding even when its not.

if i accidentally hit it (i dont like doorways), it is extremely painful, it burns, my vision flashes white and i see stars, and it feels like its bleeding all over again of course. it feels like the irl equivalent of being stunned by an electric arrow. if your character has a scar like this, having them get hit on it in a fight is a good way to make them go down for a bit. the sensation also lingers for a decent amount of time afterwards, depending on how hard the hit was. the lingering feels like a heavy pulsing/throbbing, similar to a strong headache but localized on the scar. personally, it feels like even minor impacts can have a really strong effect still as long as its a pretty direct hit.

so yeah just my personal experience having a scar like this! i like seeing characters with similar scars but it often feels like it was just a cosmetic choice to show that they're tough. it's not something that is super high-impact for me, but it still has its effects, and when you aggravate them you can't really focus on anything else until it goes away.

Harding's got magic powers now that make her feel alienated even though they got on well. Bellara goes to Emmrich to talk about spirit related things now even though Ylva is also a Watcher. Neve says it's fine but it's obviously not, and Ylva has let her down not once but twice now. They started a book club without her. She even had that whole talk with Harding about how people in the Inquisition would have code names, but when they hung out they were just regular people who called each other their first names. And, well. She is just Rook, all the time.

Horikoshi taking the “leave it up to interpretation” approach and then proceeding to COMPLETELY AVOID ADDRESSING their relationship status is the problem.

Horikoshi failing to tie up that one last loose end for Uraraka’s character arc (not closing off her feelings) is the problem.

Again, I ship IzuOcha. Still do, because I’m stubborn. Would I have liked for them to end up together, even if it was only a somewhat blatant implication that could be handwaved? Obviously. But you know what? Maybe I would be upset if the story went out of its way to explicitly de-confirm any chance of Midoriya and Uraraka being a romantic pairing, but I’d at least respect it and understand it a lot more if the story let Midoriya and Uraraka actually talk about this, or at the very least SHOWED US them talking about this. I’d understand if Uraraka completed her character arc by having a heart to heart with Midoriya and telling him that her feelings have changed, her priorities have changed, and Midoriya understands and they remain good friends. Let’s be real, romance isn’t Horikoshi’s strong suit, despite his many attempts to leave romantic implications throughout the series. I’d completely understand if he just had Midoriya and Uraraka talk and they didn’t end up together, because at least then it still provides both of their characters with closure.

But no, that’s too simple. Let’s just “leave it up to interpretation,” because it clearly wasn’t that important, right?

Well, as many people on the internet have already brought up, if it wasn’t so important, why did you spend so much time putting emphasis on it? Why did you have Uraraka, up until the FINAL WAR, have her crush on Midoriya be a crucial part of her character (it wasn’t her only character trait, mind you, but it was still important)? Why did the penultimate chapter have the class come to comfort Uraraka and tell her that they can talk to her… and then come the next chapter, Uraraka apparently hasn’t done anything regarding her supposed crush on Midoriya? For literal YEARS!?

…see, this isn’t even a shipping problem anymore. This is a character problem.

Horikoshi, for whatever reason, chose not to include a romance for the main character and his supposed love interest. And again, that’s fine, not every story needs to be a romance. Two problems with it here though (well, one problem and an observation):

1) Choosing to not at least address the romantic subplot with a “I think we’re better off as friends” encounter, thus actually concluding the subplot and providing a sense of closure, not only leaves the result feeling underwhelming and frustrating, but also actively damages Uraraka’s character arc. We can have her address the problem that caused people like Toga to exist, but heaven forbid she talks about romance with Midoriya.

2) Despite his supposed aversion to romance, Horikoshi still went out of his way to give Gentle and La Brava wedding rings… he’s willing to establish a side romantic pairing without bringing too much attention to it, but he can’t be bothered to do something similar for the arguable MAIN pairing? It’s the “Togata has special clothes so he doesn’t end up buck naked, but Hagakure’s still gotta go commando” debacle again…

I’ma go ahead and wrap this up ‘cause I don’t wanna keep y’all much longer, but like… being optimistic, this ending was… functional. I’ve got my problems with it, obviously, I don’t think it was BAD bad… but it certainly wasn’t good. It works. Barely. And it’s ‘cause of stuff like this.

Midoriya and Uraraka didn’t need to end up together, truly. All Horikoshi had to do was put the smallest amount of effort and give us something of substance, something with closure. Instead, we got what we got.

I get that he was exhausted and wanted the manga to be over… but that excuse only holds up for so long.

Some things are the same of both of them at first. Like imperfection leads to a slap (slice really) with the ruler (if you’re thinking muggle AU, slicing hex if not), it’s just the reason for the imperfection is sometimes different. Like for grades it’s the same, tardiness it’s the same, but regulus gets punished for imperfections in his appearance more often than Sirius who gets punished for imperfections in his actions than regulus. It’s very obvious they value showing regulus off like a trophy while they value taking in pride in Sirius building respect for their name. Regulus’s corset isn’t tight enough? Slice. Sirius decided to cuss in polite company? Slice. Regulus’ has kept his resting face too sullen for their liking? Slice. Sirius made their guest uncomfortable with too dry of a joke? Slice.

But anyway, more personal stuff.

As we know, for Sirius, his discipline was mostly physical. He got grounded, he got hit. It was about putting him in his place with the power she held over him while he was still smaller than her. He was rebellious and fought tooth and nail but she’s bigger, more powerful, for the time being and she wants to beat it into him ti be afraid of her so she’ll still hold that power when he’s the larger one. It’s very much about being afraid of the impending threat of his masculinity. One day he’ll be big and strong, he’ll take upon the money and power of the family, and he will outrank her in everything. She needs him to respect her, fear her, even when this happens so she can still maintain control and not be at his mercy. It’s making his pain, his punishment, a spectacle of weakness and shame.

But for regulus, who was born female, she has no such fear. Regulus is just like her: powerless. Every day ‘she’ grows older, ‘she’ only grows closer to being married off. Walburga’s punishments for Regulus reflect that. They bank on embarrassing him, reminding him of his place. It’s Walburga ordering Kreacher to not cook or clean for the day and making regulus do it so he knows how for a man(peep Kreacher and regulus bonding when he was younger and didn’t know how to cook yet but as forced to figured it out and would be punished if he didn’t so Kreacher pitied him and showed him how because wasn’t ordered not to teach the young master anything…), or holding him down and stripping him and then bathing him in scalding water and scrubbing at his skin until it’s bleeding and applied perfumed lotion like salt in the wound so he’s cleanly and soft for a man, forcing him to entertain suitors no matter how sleazy or old they are for ‘practice.’ All things to remind him that he should do good to remember she will be picking his husband. It’s making a shameful hideaway of punishment, suffering in silence and in duty like a ‘good woman.’ It’s important he knows how to done, after all. If she’s inclined to lean more in the family’s favor for than decision than his then things will get far worse than the ‘preparation’ she’s given him. Shes only looking out for her ‘daughter.’

(it’s my first time playing bg3, i know nothing about the plot; DO NOT SPOIL ANYTHING FOR ME. currently im at moonrise towers and the extent of gale’s plot is that he’s been stabilised by elminster and has also just made the shadow lantern. shoutout to astarion for being the only one not to tell me that was a bad idea, that’s when you know you’re making good life choices)

so what i’m getting from this is that the big moral choice in gale’s story is gonna be to get forgiveness and acceptance from mystra (presumably before/without using the orb) vs embracing his own ambitions and, having a vague idea of the intensity of some of the endings, possibly going way off the deep end with that

while i don’t know the full story for other companions, im feeling like gale was probably the best choice for me in terms of playing an origin because im an extreme completionist and im going to get sage inspiration points all over the place, but im also going to push *everything*. i want to follow every potentiality to its end, make dodgy deals, play all sides, etc.

and surface-level that sounds good for playing as astarion (definitely getting a lot of charlatan inspiration), but what it really means is that i get a lot of approval from astarion and also i feel like it’s gonna affect the way gale’s story ends a lot more. gonna try not to go too far off the deep end but it’s gonna be pretty tempting lmao. i’ll just keep downing these tadpoles and ‘trusting’ my hot dream guy. nothing can possibly go wrong!
