I think depictions of Anya being cruel to Curly or drawing out his suffering are artful and chilling but completely miss the point of the story and her character.
I'm not saying she doesn't deserve to have that "I told you so" moment with him but not in something callous or cold. Even if that is how it happened, she'd immediately feel guilty cause at that point she's not tormenting her tormenter or even the person truly at fault. She's doing something cathartic, similar to how Jimmy likely hits Curly to release rage he can't against the rest of the crew. She'd see herself as no different when she'd come back from the moment and see Curly cowering at her. She wants someone to take responsibility but how does being cruel to the defenseless help? Why would she want the power Jimmy has over her over Curly?
The idea of her extending someone else's pain is just so against the struggles she already faces and how she can't even bring herself to cause someone pain even to help them. Her very desire is to release herself from her own suffering and I doubt she'd even fine some sort of guilty release in being cruel to another.
#anya is not a character i see taking agency or indulging in cathartic behaviors#not knowingly like i see her as a character trapped in her head and maybe in the scenario she's cruel to Curly she is envisioning Jimmy#in his place but its not a story about justice or those deserving of punishment and those not like its the opposite of people projecting#their issues on the wrong people and saying things to the wrong people and doing things they shouldn't but anya uniquely falls out of it as#she is subjected to a lot of it but it is also not something she wants to subject another person to like you are doing what Jimmy does and#placing ur rage into another persons and viewing their actions through your eyes like she'd more likely yell at him than do harm or#cause him more pain like at least make it in character#but also she clearly doesn't want to see jimmy or curly in the same light and doesnt because she still repeatedly goes to Curly for comfort#and protection and god there's like concepts that need to be applied to characters individually and then the story as a whole#we can not view the game through only one themed lens less we forget to inspect the compounding factor of Anya is so much more than girl#that needs to be allowed to go off but a woman that simply wants right to be done by her and no more harm like she doesn't want to be aroun#the suffering like idk but some of yall would just benefit from like understanding that people are inherently grey with the capabilities of#black n white thinking or actions#mouthwashing#mouthwashing game#anya mouthwashing#i like her the most but then again i am defensive of all women in media and hate when people change the way the character would take agency#for themselves like yes I want her to tweak out but she just wouldn't and I like seeing realistic depictions of a woman suffering the way#she is like shes not the type at the end of the movie to have a one liner but feel a shallow freedom cause she needs to realistically heal#idk but its just like there is an obbsession forming with making her character her pain and not how she handles and navigates the issue

I think what really bothers me about fanon!Astarion isn't just the woobification. That happens to every problematic white boy. It's annoying, but not news. It's that almost every trait that the fandom assigns him is something that is already explored through a different character in this very game
You want a character that's too focused on the task at hand to want to stop and help innocents? That's Lae'zel! Astarion is cool with dicking around, but Lae'zel spends most act 1 actively in a panic about the tadpole and pushes you to just find a cure already
You want a trauma survivor that is mostly self-serving but can't help but care about people in a similar situation? Well, Astarion disaproves of you helping slaves, but Shadowheart really wants you to look out for kids! Even when she gets tortured for it!
You want someone who is prone to sympathizing with the monstrous? Despite being a monster hunter, it's Wyll that has that covered! Astarion doesn't even like you sympathizing with a recently orphaned goblin kid
You want a proper courtship with a prince charming? That's literally Wyll's romance!
You want a character that tries very hard to be bad, but deep down enjoys doing the right thing, and starts to accept that over the course of the game? Shadowheart again! A massive part of her story is just that
You want the angst of a character still having been a minor when entering their abusive situation? That's the case for literally everybody except for him and maybe Karlach! He was an adult with a job
None of this is meant to be an attack on Astarion as a character, but pushing all those traits on him does the game a massive disservice. All these character's storylines exist in conversation with each other, they all benefit from the existence of the others. To instead pretend all those things apply to one character, is just
Well, it's incredibly boring
#not to mention all the other characters mentioned are women and a black man#and it's a bad look if you have to apply their traits to a white man to find them interesting lol#but anyway can't stess enough that I do think Astarion is a great character#he's just not the character a lot of his fans think he is#and it's a shame how prevalent that version of him has gotten#bg3#astarion

#infidelity tw#cheating tw#I'm curious bc a lot of ppl on that poll were Very very heated one way or the other#and I'm wondering how that applies to fiction#I myself don't seek it out but I don't mind it and sometimes it can be compelling in a story#it adds some Flavor and it's not like these characters are real yk?#but I get the feeling some people avoid it in a way they might avoid like. dead dove shit

I love the idea of a yandere who gives you your own separate bedroom where you're being kept. If you behave, they might even let you decorate it exactly how you want, although this may depend on the yandere in question.
Even if it's not exactly to your liking, the bedroom is something like a comforting space. You're allowed to sleep in there sometimes, you're allowed to sit quietly and spent time alone if you say you want to recharge, you can sit and do little hobbies with the door shut and be yourself (whoever that is, anymore) for a little while.
But this freedom, this little sanctuary where you're allowed to retreat to, comes with a price.
They can give you that little comfort, that ounce of freedom--and they can take it away.
Run away, squirm, fight, yell, bite, or generally act out? Your bedroom door gets taken off. No more privacy, no more shut door, no more ounce of comfort that you get from being alone for a little bit.
Refuse to let them snuggle with you, argue about sleeping in their bed a few times a week? Your bed goes away, and you sleep with them until further notice.
In the end, the bedroom may be yours on the surface, but it's theirs to do with as they like. They can choose to yank away the comfort you get from it at moment's notice.
So do your best to be good for them, okay?

I had a post a while ago about making sure your dnd character WANTS to be an adventurer a while ago, something else I’ve been thinking about is the importance of making a dnd character that WANTS to be in a group and have some sort of relationship with other PCs. the Group Nature of ttrpgs means lone wolves just aren’t feasible. if you really want to play a lone wolf or antisocial character at the beginning then I highly recommend telling your dm and the others players that you plan on forming bonds along the way and growing out of that mindset. otherwise why are you playing dnd, a group activity that involves cooperation and building relationships? Just Write A Book if you don’t wanna be in a group
#the advice Just Write A Book goes out to DMs a lot but it also applies to PCs I think#I’ve had character ideas that I’ve moved from PC to Book Character for this reason!!#I do like lone wolves who don’t trust others but they’re way more fun to read about than actually play#pls cooperate with the other players and be friends at the table lol#dnd

Therapy talk in fics can be annoying but also 1) they're just fanfics and you don't have to read them and 2) sometimes the author is just using their favorite characters to work through their own shit.
#i have used therapy talk in fics#because they were basically mental conversations with myself applied to characters i like#this is not a vague i've just been getting a lot of recommended posts

Rereading Oathbringer, and it's once again so painfully clear to me that Lirin pushing Kaladin to become a surgeon was his desperate attempt to keep Kaladin from going to war. As a surgeon's assistant, Kaladin was exempt from being conscripted into the Alethi military, and sending him to Kharbranth would get him even further away from the war. I know Lirin gets a lot of flak for trying to push his views and desires onto Kaladin, but all I really see is a father trying his hardest to protect his son from the horrors of war while living in a society that venerates it.
#anecdotes by peachdoxie#Stormlight Archive#peachdoxie rereads Stormlight#i think the lirin criticism often strays into applying our social norms onto a fictional society#like yes it would be great if lirin had supported Kaladin's desire to be a solider#but like lirin didn't have a lot of options to keep Kaladin safe#like idk i just see lirin much more sympathetically than 'strict father forcing his views onto kaladin because he's Always Right '#i think there's a lot more nuance to lirin than that#and it's sometimes baffling how many people don't see the same things i do in his character#anyway lirin is my favorite minor character dont @ me

you ever get massively annoyed about how casually fandom culture accepts and even sometimes encourages ace/aro erasure, even in fandoms that are predominantly queer? because I do.
#fandom#asexuality#aromanticism#aroace#asexual#aromantic#this is mostly about#tolya yul bataar#and#yelena belova#but it probably applies to lots of other fandoms#oh! like how osemanverse fans consistently ignore tori being aroace#or how aroace characters are treated as an afterthought

Started thinking about how Dick lost the two most important people in his life at the age of 8 and since then death has never left him. It's just so heartbreaking because it will never stop affecting him. He can't stop caring, he can't possibly stop loving the people who enter his life no matter how high the chances he'll lose them too are. He could lose his whole family, all his friends ('s been close both, even if some eventually came back) and yet he would never stop welcoming people in his life because his heart is just so big and he has so much love to give.
#yeah yeah I know this could apply to a lot of dc characters#but dick grayson lives rent free in my head so you'll have to deal with it#dick grayson everytime he starts caring for someone#death: it's been a minute!#his parents#his closest friends (plural)#his brothers#his childhood home and family#his second dad#who's next dc? the love of his life?#man even people he just happened to know casually end up dying and he blames himself for it#dick grayson#nightwing#dc comics#dc

It's really funny imagining the idea that Dazai keeps ruining his clothes by jumping into rivers or getting blood all over himself and then just either hangs the SAME OUTFIT up to dry on a clothesline or goes out to the same store where he buys the same exact outfit all over again repeatedly because he couldn't be bothered anymore after a while.
You could handwave that away while he was in the Port Mafia because almost everyone wears tailored suits and nice clothes, but now with him in the ADA, he just keeps buying the same tan coat after getting seaweed and garbage all over it, and once he had to go hunting all over Yokohama in search of the EXACT bolo tie he wore because it turned out that the store he usually goes to doesn't sell it anymore.
He's late to the office one day while on the phone with Kunikida that he had to make an emergency stop at the department store for another vest.
#bungou stray dogs#bungo stray dogs#bsd#bsd dazai#headcanon#you could apply this to a lot of characters since most of their outfits are static#but dazai specifically is such a disaster

Imagine if Isabela got to visibly age. Just imagine how emotional it would be to see her with wrinkles and grey hair and all the body changes that come with getting older, knowing that DA2!Isabela’s life was about surviving from moment to moment and she probably never expected to live that long.
(Full disclosure: I haven’t played Veilguard, so this isn’t any kind of commentary on the game itself. This is just me being grumpy about Isabela’s design/outfit, because I’ve seen enough of that to know I Don’t Like It.)
#the same applies to morrigan#LET WOMEN (REAL & FICTIONAL) AGE#and stop mandating that they “age well”#whatever that means#also… some of us have been following these characters since we ourselves were a lot younger#i was twenty the first time i played dragon age origins#(fifteen years later…)#it would be super cool to feel like they were also getting to age out of their 20s/30s but apparently that feature is exclusive to men#isabela#bioware critical#veilguard critical#veilguard spoilers#i suppose??#again: i have not played the game so this is purely about character design

miss Toskarin you’re not convincing me that Skyrim was the ruin of all western rpgs. In fact you’re convincing me that the issues began with oblivion.
I'd better be careful or else I might convince you of my less loudly-held beliefs
#I liked oblivion well enough but it's got a lot of Very Serious problems that were never solved and instead festered forward into genre norm#although technically if you want to get more specific here#the problems that I complain most often about now actually started under the surface of morrowind's development#and intensified with the reception to tribunal#and then caught on fire with the lessons learned from bloodmoon (which is proto-oblivion in a lot of ways)#as with so many things the damage was more in the wrong lessons being learned from games with scrappy development cycles#and how those became incredibly toxic when applied as the standard for development rather than a freak accident of planning#consider how oblivion passively fucking up your character was a solution to people trying to play off-build in morrowind#and how skyrim being incredibly easy was a solution to oblivion's level-rotting#and how both of these solutions are solving a symptom by removing friction without replacing it#which is further incentivised because the game now has fewer features that would turn off someone who would otherwise not play an rpg
