I'm not getting over them anytime soon:
Five: *Posts a low-quality image in the group chat* Duanphen: If I had a dollar for every pixel in this picture, I'd have 15 cents. Five: If I had a dollar for every once of range I felt in my body after reading this text I'd have enough money to buy a canon and fire at you. Caleb: Actually I did the math. Duanphen would have $225, not $0.15. Duanphen: Fam, I'm right here. Isabela: If I had a dollar, I'd buy a can of soda :). Five: While you're there, can you buy me apple juice too. Isabela: Sorry, I only have a dollar :( Caleb: Hey, I just realized Duanphen would have $22.500, not $225 because it's a dollar for every pixel, not a cent. Isabela: If I had $22,500, I'd buy soda and apple juice. Ran: You can buy anything with $22,500. Duanphen: Yeah, and she wants soda and apply juice. Ran: Apply juice to what? Five: Directly to the forehead. Einar: Great chat everyone. --- Einar: it's a package from my parents. Isabela: What's inside. Einar: It's heavy, must be their disappointment in me. --- Isabela: If you put 'violently' in front of anything to describe your action, it becomes funnier. Duanphen: Violently practices. Caleb: Violently studies. Isabela: Violently sleeps. Ran: Violently shoots pictures. Einar: Violently boxes. Five: Violently murders people. Caleb: Violently worries about the previous statement --- (Responses to "I love you") Duanphen: I know. Ran: I'm sorry. Caleb: Why? Einar: *Finger guns* Isabela: *Hair flip* Who doesn't. Five: If only there was someone out there who loves you. --- Isabela: truth or dare? Einar: Dare. Isabela: I dare you to kiss the hottest person in the Skimmer. Einar: ...Five? Five: Y-yes? Einar: Can you move aside? I'm trying to get to the mirror.

Isabela Dias at Mother Jones:
It didn’t take long for the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania to galvanize right-wing politicians and supporters of former far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil. About a month before the election in 2018, Bolsonaro, then the frontrunner, was stabbed on the campaign trail. While Trump seems to have recovered from the shot in the ear, his Brazilian counterpart had to undergo a colostomy and several abdominal surgeries in the aftermath of the stabbing. The incident with Bolsonaro has lessons for how the attempted assassination of Trump could affect this year’s US election. In Brazil afterward, false theories spread—both on the left and the right—of either a staged attack or a purposeful attempt to kill a dangerous threat to the establishment. Critics softened rheotric. Right-wing actors blamed the media for instigating the attack. And the discussion about Bolsonaro’s anti-democratic politics became notably more complex.
After the Trump news, Brazilians on the right were quick to see the similarities and decried the shooting as part of a systematic persecution against conservatives. On X, Eduardo Bolsonaro, a congressman and the third son of the one-time Brazilian president, shared a photo montage of a bloodied Trump and a pained Bolsonaro. “Trust me: he is already elected,” he wrote in English. “We have experience with a situation like that, we know the enemy—and you too.” Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son, also chimed in, blaming the left: “They tried to kill Trump, they tried to kill Bolsonaro, but the (extreme) right is the one accused of being violent. You may not like Trump or Bolsonaro, but ask yourself: why did they want to kill them?” A debunked video dubbed in Portuguese with a supposed message from Trump to Bolsonaro said, “They tried to do the same thing to me as they did to you.”
When asked about the shooting, Bolsonaro suggested “only conservatives suffer attacks.” Echoing talking points from some US Christian Nationalist groups, Bolsonaro said it was “a miracle from heaven” that Trump “was saved by a matter of a few centimeters,” just like it was a miracle that he survived in 2018. Calling the Republican nominee the “biggest world leader of the moment,” Bolsonaro, who has been barred from running for office until 2030, posted, “See you at the inauguration.” Earlier this year, the police confiscated Bolsonaro’s passport as part of a sweeping search-and-seizure operation linked to an ongoing federal investigation in Brazil—overseen by the Supreme Court—into Bolsonaro and his allies’ alleged coup-like efforts to overturn the results of the 2022 elections. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the attack as a loss for democracy.
[...] The shooting also resurfaced false theories, from both sides of the political spectrum, about the attack against Bolsonaro six years ago. In September 2018, Adélio Bispo, who had previously been a member of a left-wing party, stabbed Bolsonaro in the abdomen. Although police investigations concluded that the perpetrator, who was arrested on the spot, acted alone, Bolsonaro and his supporters insisted that the stabbing had been ordered by someone and tried to blame it on the left. At the time, Bolsonaro called the left “aggressive,” saying they “have tried to eliminate their opponents no matter how.” His supporters have continued to use the stabbing to cultivate an image of Bolsonaro as a “political martyr.” Meanwhile, some on the left raised doubts about the incident, suggesting it had been staged and calling it a “fake stabbing.” After Saturday, André Janones, one of Lula’s allies in Congress, joked about Bolsonaro having “taught” Trump how to fake an attack and questioned the seriousness of the attempted assassination, mentioning the fact that Trump asked for his shoes amidst the chaos. “At least this time they remembered to provide the ‘blood,'” he posted on X. In response, a far-right congressman aligned with Bolsonaro has vowed to send a letter to the US Embassy requesting the cancelation of Janones’ US visa.
The impact of the assassination attempt against Trump on the presidential race remains to be seen. But there could be hints in what happened with Bolsonaro. Some political analysts in Brazil believe that staying away from the public stage during recovery ultimately helped the far-right Brazilian candidate insulate himself from fiercer criticism and potential debate confrontations. A voter intention poll by the Economist from that time shows a rise in support for Bolsonaro and a decline for the opponent Fernando Haddad, from the Worker’s Party, after September.
The attempted assassination of Donald Trump in 2024 in the US and the stabbing of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018 in Brazil have some things in common: they brought increased support for the person in polls (though it is too early to tell in Trump’s case).

Ea, Our Second Chance (12)
12. Species study: the Kurukshetran springbear
(Index)
(< 11. The early days) (> 13. Anatomy of Diplostomia)
(I messed up. At the stage of Ea’s history in which this story is set, all people outside should be wearing a carbon dioxide filter, which they clearly aren’t in the picture.)
(original link)
« Kurukshetran springbear (Barosternon carinatus; Diplostomia : Phoneida). Autochthonous of the red mosaic woodland of Kurukshetra land, in southwestern Inanna... It feeds mostly on mid-sized (30 to 300 kg) fauna. It awaits in a suitable place, typically the edges of a grove with a view on more open ground outside, and uses its powerful hindlimb to pounce on the prey, crushing it under its trunk. The chest of the springbear is reinforced by a thick "keel" of calcite plates. The forelimbs, extremely muscular, are used to prevent the prey from dodging the leap at the last moment, or to pummel it down if necessary. »
– fragment of encyclopedia, recovered from ruins in Toumai, circa 290 AL
« If ever find yourself losing your grasp on hope, remember: your very existence means that every single one of your billions of ancestors, from the dawn of life onward, pulled through against all odds. You have already survived hell countless times; what's one more? » – Isabela Silva, Survival Handbook
They say you never get used to it.
They say you might get used to seeing lions every day, or crocodiles, or sharks – even snakes and spiders and wasps – but the things that live on this planet, they look wrong in some horrible way, and once you've seen them out in the field you're going to see them every time you close your eyes. When you think of them, it's like a worm is gnawing in your brain. Every single Earthborn, every last one, says so.
I don't know. Spiders are pretty fucking scary, if you ask me. They really should have left them behind. But the Earthborns are always going on and on about how the blistertrees look so wrong, and the coilworms look so wrong, and the roofmoles look so wrong, and the color of the fucking sky looks so wrong. The hell does that even mean? How are they supposed to look instead? I've seen pictures of gorillas. Are you telling me those things don't "look so wrong"?
Are they being a bunch of babies? I'm sure they miss home, but goddamn it, it's been sixty years now. Or ten thousand, for all we can tell. Man the fuck up. Advisor Khand is one of them, though. And Commander Samirowa, and General Mansouri. And I don't think they need to man up more than I do. I'm just sick of it. I was born on this planet, my father was born on this planet. There is nothing wrong with being born on this planet. Give it a rest.
I'll say this, though: springbears are scary. Them and wormsharks. Giant dicks filled with teeth. They'll rip you apart one bite at a time. Imagine your flesh was made of jelly and someone came over and started tearing handfuls away, that's how wormsharks kill you. But they're not a problem as long as you stay on the dry. Springbears, though... You're walking through the woods minding your own business, with your smilk goats and whatnot, and then a rover-sized monsters falls out of the sky and crushes you. Just crushes you flat, like a boulder. Your bones snap, your guts splatter on the ground. It eats you chunk by chunk, and then licks you off its chest plates with that freaky tongue it has. You can't even see where some poor bastard was crushed before you, because everything is red and black anyway.
I think I'd rather be got by a scissorwolf. At least their jaws are sharp, they cut you in half and that's it. Thing is, predators don't actually care about killing you, just about keeping you still enough to eat you. If you can't fight back because you're dead, that's cool. If you can't fight back because all your limbs are broken, that's cool too.
I've seen two of them fighting, once. Frightful stuff. They rise on the back leg, lock their arms, and each tries to push the other on its back. I guess that's why they have armored backs; would hate to think what else they'd need to defend from. An Earthborn said they looked like bears when they locked arms like that. Wouldn't know – never seen a bear. But it's in their name, so it checks out. Anyway, you'd have to see the way their arms bulge when they're really giving everything they've got. That's the kind of strength a borehole miner should have, not a goddamn animal.
I've heard that the higher-ups, maybe Khand himself, plan to use them for training. You take a springbear that's sleeping over a meal, blindfold it (pretty sure they go by smell anyway), weigh it down, and tie it to a pillar – and I hope to God it's a well-planted pillar – with a smilk cord. Then you push some poor sod, with a weapon or not, in front of it. Juuust out of reach. If you can keep your position in front of a springbear jumping on you, you can keep your position in front of anything.
Turns out there's a trick to kill them. If you see them coming, that is. They've got their brain between their shoulders, so good luck reaching it, but there's a spot in their chest where a big blood vessel pokes out of the bone plates. If you hit it right, they lose their pressure and collapse, like shooting a football. The matter is that to do that you need to keep your cool in front of a motherfucking charging springbear. I'm not saying you can't do it, but I'd feel more comfortable on a treetop during a thunderstorm, waving a steel rod around, and saying terrible things about God's mom.
I don't look forward to my turn. But if I don't drop dead on the spot, a column of gunrovers won't look so scary anymore. Actually, you know what? Bring it on, you three-legged, slit-faced, freaky-tongued asshole. I bet YOU won't look so scary anymore. We got rid of worse stuff than you, back on Earth.
– Lieutenant Jahangir Turani, personal diary, 62 AL, late spring
