The cozy little restaurant on the edge of Manhattan buzzed with the soft hum of conversation and the occasional clink of glasses. Serena sat at a corner table, idly stirring her cup of tea. Snowflakes drifted lazily outside, settling on the windowsill, while holiday lights blinked cheerfully along the streets. Serena, however, hadn’t.

Her breath caught in her throat as the sounds around her blurred. A waiter accidentally dropped a tray nearby, the sharp clang of metal against tile echoing like an explosion in her ears. The walls of the restaurant seemed to close in, the warm air suddenly feeling oppressive.

The chatter around her faded into the background, replaced by the deafening roar of alien engines and the panicked screams of New Yorkers. Her chest tightened as if an invisible force had wrapped itself around her ribs, making it hard to breathe.

The fork slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering against the plate. She froze, eyes wide, her surroundings spinning.

With a sudden, panicked jolt, she shoved past the table, bumping into a waiter with a tray of drinks. The crash of the glasses hitting the floor seemed to echo in her skull, her heart hammering in her chest.

Monday, Los Angeles.

Serena Edwin Stark, Tony Stark’s eldest daughter, stood across the counter from her father in the infamous donut shop, arms crossed and eyes narrowed. She had inherited his sharp tongue and knack for making an entrance, but her genuine concern masked the playful bravado she often exuded.

“Dad, this whole palladium poisoning thing is getting out of hand. You can’t just—”

“Can’t what, Starkling? Wing it like I always do?” Tony retorted, smirking, though his pale complexion betrayed his weakening state.

Before the argument escalated, Nick Fury and Natasha Romanoff entered, their presence as foreboding as ever. Fury wasted no time delivering his pitch about the Avengers Initiative and the lithium dioxide antidote. Serena watched uneasily as Natasha prepared the injection.

"And you shouldn’t be working alone," Serena replied.

Together, they found Bruce Banner. But before they could plan their next steps, chaos erupted. Thaddeus Ross’ forces attacked, and Bruce transformed into the Hulk. Serena’s armor held its own, providing cover fire, but the tide shifted when Hulk began to swell unnaturally.

"What’s happening to him?" Serena shouted.

"It’s not natural!" Natasha replied.

“No!” Serena screamed as the enormous figure burst apart, showering the campus in destruction.

The Hulk exploded before their eyes, sending Serena flying into a nearby wall. Her suit absorbed most of the impact, but the shockwave left her disoriented.

Another potential Avenger had fallen.

Natasha was on the move, determined to avenge her fallen friends. But as she approached a secluded part of the base, the assassin struck. It was quick—too quick for her to react. Invisible, deadly, and relentless, the figure dragged Natasha into the shadows before she could even draw her weapon.

In the library, Natasha had managed to find the final clue. As she stumbled backward in the darkened hallway, she whispered the word “hope” into her comms, warning Fury.

But it was the last thing she ever said. Hank Pym—driven by grief and vengeance—struck her down, his small yet lethal attacks overwhelming her.

Friday, Los Angeles.

Fury reached out to Serena. "Natasha’s dead," he informed her.

Serena’s voice broke. "Who’s left, Fury? You? Me? Whoever this is—they’re winning."

She returned to her lab to analyze the evidence she’d gathered. "C.A.R.L.O.S., replay Natasha’s comms."

A single word caught her attention: Hope.

"What does that mean?" Serena muttered.

Before she could dig further, a shadow moved behind her. Serena barely had time to activate her armor before she was attacked. A force struck her chest, bypassing her defenses.

The tiny figure of Hank Pym materialized on her shoulder, a malicious grin on his face.

"You’re too much like your father," he sneered. "And just as dangerous."

Serena fought to stand, her hands shaking as she tried to summon magic, but it was useless. Her body betrayed her.

He planted a device on her Arc Reactor, and Serena’s suit short-circuited. She fell to her knees, gasping for air as the reactor overloaded.

Serena’s final thoughts were of her father, Tony Stark, and the world he had tried so hard to save. She had failed, just like he had.

"Goodbye, Stark," Pym said coldly before vanishing.

The reactor exploded, taking Serena with it.

With Serena's death, Fury lost the last of his core allies. As Loki’s plans unfolded, Fury knew it wasn’t over. He still had one hope: Captain America in the ice, and the power of Captain Marvel.

“I’ll find them,” he whispered. “I’ll find a way to stop this.”

The fight wasn’t over. The Avengers might have fallen, but the spirit of their sacrifice would drive Fury to find a new way to fight, for the future of the Earth and for the heroes they had lost.

Previously... Serena Edwin Stark, a detective for S.H.I.E.L.D. in 1955, infiltrated a HYDRA base alongside her British companion, Carlos. After overhearing a heated discussion about the Winter Soldier, she faced an unexpected interruption—a voice calling her name from behind.

"Miss Stark."

The voice was calm but carried a weight that sent chills down Serena’s spine. She spun around, her hand hovering near her gun, her heart pounding in her chest. In the dim light of the hallway, the silhouette of a man emerged.

It was Carlos.

"For the love of—" she hissed, her hand dropping to her side. "You scared the hell out of me!"

"Want to test that theory?" she shot back, though the corner of her lips quirked upward. His levity was a welcome relief in the oppressive silence.

Carlos glanced at the locked door. "What’s behind there?"

"Not sure yet," Serena admitted, stepping back towards the door. "But they’re talking about the Winter Soldier. And it’s heated. We need to get in there."

Carlos raised an eyebrow. "And your plan is…?"

"Still working on that."

Carlos crouched near the door, inspecting the lock. "Let me guess: your plan involves barging in and hoping for the best?"

"More like winging it, but sure, let’s call it a plan," she muttered.

Carlos grinned, pulling a slim toolkit from his pocket. "How about we skip the ‘winging it’ part this time? Let me handle this."

"Shut it, Carlos," Serena muttered, though there was no bite in her words. She pressed her ear against the door again, straining to catch more details. The voices were still low, but the tension in them was unmistakable.

Carlos leaned against the wall, his sharp eyes scanning the hallway. "We don’t have much time. Someone could patrol through here any second. Let me handle this."

Before Serena could protest, Carlos knelt in front of the lock and pulled out a small set of tools from his pocket. Serena watched in surprise as he expertly began picking the lock.

Serena folded her arms, watching as Carlos began picking the lock with practiced precision. "Since when are you the lockpicking expert?"

"Since I realized S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t always provide keys," he replied, his tone light. With a soft click, the lock yielded. Carlos stepped back, motioning to the door.

Serena hesitated for only a moment before pushing the door open just enough to peek inside. The room was dimly lit, with a large table in the center surrounded by men in HYDRA uniforms. Blueprints and documents were scattered across the table, and on the far wall, a map of the city was pinned up with red strings connecting various locations.

Her eyes narrowed as she spotted a man sitting at the head of the table. His face was obscured by shadow, but his commanding presence made it clear he was in charge.

"That’s him," Serena whispered to Carlos.

"The Winter Soldier?" Carlos asked.

"No," she replied, her voice tense. "The puppeteer."

Carlos followed her gaze, his expression hardening. "What’s the plan?"

Serena’s mind worked quickly. "We need to get those documents. They’ll tell us what HYDRA’s planning, and maybe give us a clue about the Winter Soldier’s next move."

"And how do you propose we do that?"

Serena smirked. "Improvisation."

Carlos sighs. "Why do I even ask?"

Serena slipped inside, her footsteps soundless. She moved toward the table, her heartbeat thundering in her ears. The men were engrossed in their discussion, gesturing animatedly at the map.

She reached the edge of the table and scanned the papers. A treasure trove of intel lay before her: lists of targets, mission outlines, and cryptic notes about an operative called "The Asset." One document caught her eye—a list of names and locations, each marked with dates. At the bottom of the page, a single name stood out: Bucky Barnes.

Her stomach dropped. She’d heard whispers of the name, but seeing it here, linked to the infamous Winter Soldier, made it real.

Before she could grab another document, the man at the head of the table looked up. His sharp eyes locked onto hers, and the room fell silent.

"Well, well," he said, his voice smooth and dangerous. "It seems we have a guest."

Serena’s blood turned to ice. She snatched the paper and bolted for the door.

"Intruders!" the man roared, his voice reverberating through the room.

Carlos was already moving, his gun drawn. "Run!" he shouted as chaos erupted behind them.

Gunfire echoed in the narrow hallway as Serena and Carlos sprinted away. Serena clutched the stolen paper tightly, her mind racing. The Winter Soldier’s mystery had just deepened, but survival came first.

Carlos fired behind them, his shots precise. "You’d better have found something good!"

"Oh, I did!" Serena shouted. "But I’d prefer not to die before I can explain it!"

They rounded a corner, nearly colliding with a pair of HYDRA guards. Carlos didn’t hesitate, taking them down with quick, calculated shots. Serena led the way, navigating the base’s labyrinthine corridors with the blueprint layout she’d memorized earlier.

Boots thundered behind them, voices shouting orders. Serena’s breath came in ragged gasps, but she forced herself onward.

"This way!" she yelled, veering left into a maintenance tunnel.

Carlos followed, reloading his gun as they ran. "Any idea how to get out of this maze?"

"Working on it!" she replied.

The tunnel opened into a larger storage room. Serena scanned the space, her eyes landing on a stack of crates near a ventilation shaft.

"There!" she said, pointing.

Carlos nodded, boosting Serena up first. She squeezed into the shaft, pulling herself forward as fast as she could. Behind her, Carlos climbed in, slamming the grate shut just as their pursuers burst into the room.

For a moment, they were safe.

Serena crawled through the narrow space, the stolen paper was crumpled against her chest, she wasn't letting go of it any sooner.

"How much farther?" Carlos whispered from behind.

"Not far," she replied.

They emerged into a dimly lit alleyway, the cool night air hitting Serena’s face like a slap. For a moment, they simply stood there, catching their breath.

Carlos broke the silence. "What did you grab?"

Serena unfolded the paper, her hands trembling. "It’s a list of targets. Missions. And..." She hesitated.

"And?" Carlos pressed.

Serena’s voice dropped to a whisper. "A name. Bucky Barnes."

Carlos’s eyes widened, but before he could respond, the roar of an engine filled the air. A black HYDRA vehicle screeched to a halt at the alley’s entrance, its headlights piercing through the shadows.

"Move!" Serena yelled, shoving Carlos toward the opposite end of the alley.

“Yeah, well, you know me. Fashionably late and all that,” she teases lightly, though the concern in her dark eyes is evident. “You look... better than I expected, honestly.” She glances at the IV line and the machines before her gaze returns to Charcoal. “Not that I doubted you'd fight this thing. You're tougher than all of us combined.”

When Charcoal asks about the Avengers, Serena exhales, leaning back into the chair. “Oh, you know, the usual chaos. Steve’s still trying to keep everyone in line, and dad, well, dad is... dad. The new recruits have potential, but they’re like baby giraffes on ice most days.” She chuckles, shaking her head.

Her tone softens, and her smile fades just slightly. “It’s not the same without you, though. Feels like there’s this... piece missing. You’re missed, Charcoal. By all of us.”

You enter the hospital nervously. This is the first time you’ll be seeing Charcoal since she retired from the Avengers due to being diagnosed with stage one lung cancer.

You eventually reach her room. You’re hesitant about entering at first, but then you enter. Charcoal is lying in a hospital bed asleep. You sit in the chair next to her bed.

“It’s about time you came to visit me.” Charcoal remarks. She smiles, quite glad you finally found time to visit her. “So how are the Avengers doing?” Charcoal wonders, as she sits upright.
