The Ipswich Torcs
Gold Torcs Found Together Buried About 75 BCE, Near Ipswich, Suffolk, The British Museum, London
All were made from two twisted solid bars. Four have cast terminals ornamented in high relief: they can be paired but their patterns are not identical.

Horse's Chamfron from Hexham, England dated between the 1st and 2nd Centuries on display at Roman Vindolanda Fort and Museum in Hexham, England
This almost complete chamfron (a hourse's ceremonial face mask) was found amongst the remains of the Praetorium (residence of the Prefect) of Flavius Cerialis, the prefect of the 9th Cohort of Batavians. Many of the bronze fittings were removed in antiquity, presumably so that they could be fitted onto a replacement.

Incense burner
Iron, gold, lining of silver
c. 19th century
MET Museum
This little praying mantis is fully articulated, meaning its body hinges to move like a real bug. The 19th-century Japanese reproduction resembles incense burners made for samurai. Samurai collected novelty incense burners ranging in whimsical shapes and fantastical forms. Thanks to the export market, reproductions such as this were popularized.

meh HoT gifs (3/?)
#alek gifs#ninjago#ninjago krux#ninjago acronix#hands of time#time twins#alternate title to this series is : stuff i noticed after watching this season 10 whole times#okay actually thats a lie. i realized this the 3rd time around#i think of acronix and how he barely makes any decisions for himself and i go crazy#ppl equate that with him feeling forced to do stuff.. uh hes always been a follower guys!!#cue him calling wu “master wu” even after the twins betrayal. him liking machia bc shes “mean” and bossy#he has no issue with following orders lol. prepare for a long acronix rant one day#contexts -> gif 1 barely counts i just wanted to include him looking at krux. he does this a lot during that fight#gif 2 is before they kill blunck and raggmunk (idk how to spell their names still ... sorry)#gif 3 is before they were going to kill wu in the golden hour legacy short. which is canon !!#gif 4 is before they sent themselves into the temporal vortex#that one post that was like “are we still doing revenge? yeah? cool” bc thats basically acronix#there is something fundamentally wrong with these two's brains but idk how to describe it#krux who literally lost his mind after losing his brother to the point he adopted an entire identity#“he just needed to go undercover!!” counter point as soon as acronix came back he was unable to pretend to be saunders. he acted super weird#like when kai was in the museum he couldnt pretend to be this person he wasnt. acronix was back !!! so was he. krux was 100% going to kill#the smith sibs if maya and ray didnt comply. also.. canonly they knew him when they worked as teachers back in s3. he watched them grow up#and pretended all was well meanwhile their parents were being forced to work and slave away to build the iron doom. he is not normal#then you have acronix who thrives off of violence and is described as throwing himself into battle like a blunt object. has no regard#for himself as a person and just takes (almost) everything his brother says as gospel. s7 couldve done smthn really cool with how#the only thing the twins ever really disagreed on was technology. also ive went on a semirant about how krux's hatred for tech was misplaced#hatred for losing acronix. wanted to travel to the pre modern era? okay well whyd he pick 40 years ago specifically. also NOTE that they#went back after their past selves had lost. they wouldve faired better if they went and helped their past selves. also the reversal blade#had already fallen so when the twins went back in time there was two kruxes. he literally went back to when he had been all alone for the#for the first time. he went back to when his life was ruined and his brother was gone!! but he had nix with him this time . ughdhf

A DREAM OF SWORDS campaign
The Kickstarter for A DREAM OF SWORDS is one week in, and has hit all of its original stretch goals!
Tumblr media
So even though the book is an embossed 2-color hardcover now (with silver foil on the horizon) and has twenty-five more drawings in than it did when it launched, it's still going to only be $16 plus shipping for backers. The price will go up for retail after the campaign is over but one of the things that I think is really neat about kickstarter is, thanks to the stretch goals, the folks supporting it out of the gate get more for less.
Also, because I'm doing twenty-five more drawings, that means there are now plenty of original pieces left for backers at that level.
Thanks so very much to everyone who's supported this campaign, and who told others about it and shared it. I really, really appreciate it!

I just of a Night at the Museum AU where lightning strikes a comic store and despite all logic all the statues of heroes, villains, etc. just come alive and it's absolute chaos.
The Justice League is trying to crack the case why they are suddenly in a store where all their secret identities are on full display, the Avengers are running around and smashing things, somewhere Erik Lehnsherr and Charles Xavier are playing chess and arguing.
And the person on shift is a fan but is totally not getting paid enough for this sh*t.

A 2,000-Year-Old Child's Shoe Found in Austria
Deep underground, an ancient child toiled away in a salt mine.
Perhaps their job was to shovel up discarded rocks. Or perhaps they carried precious materials to the surface. Maybe they had a different job entirely.
The only clue they left behind was a 2,100-year-old shoe.
Archaeologists were excavating a tunnel of an Iron Age salt mine in Dürrnberg, Austria, when they found the child’s shoe, according to an Aug. 31 news release from the German Mining Museum.
The small shoe was incredibly well-preserved, photo show. The worn, brown material is open down the center with a series of U-shaped hooks. It almost looks like a modern-day ballet slipper.
The shoe still had remnants of flax or linen laces, the release said. Based on its lace-up pattern and design, archaeologists identified the footwear as being made in the second century B.C.
Archaeologists said the shoe roughly corresponds to a modern European size 30 shoe. In U.S. sizing, this ranges from a kid’s 11 to 12 shoe size, according to conversion charts from Kiwi Sizing and SizeGuide.net. Although these modern sizes are commonly worn by 5-year-old to 6-year-old children, archaeologists did not indicate the child miner’s age.
During previous excavations in the Dürrnberg salt mine, archaeologists found several leather shoes, the release said. Still, children’s shoes are considered special finds because they prove that Iron Age children were present underground.
Near the shoe in the Georgenberg tunnel, archaeologists found half of a wooden shovel blade and some fur with lacing. The material was likely part of a fur hood, the release said. Archaeologists did not specify if or how these artifacts were connected to the shoe.
Organic material — such as those used in the shoe and fur hood — usually decompose over time, head archaeologist Thomas Stoellner said in the release. At the Dürrnberg mine, the natural preserving effect of the salt helps save fabric artifacts that typically don’t survive in other environments.
Excavations in the Georgenberg tunnel are part of a long-term research project in DĂźrrnberg, the release said. Archaeologists will continue excavating the salt mine to better understand the Iron Age people who once worked there.
DĂźrrnberg is about 190 miles west of Vienna and along the Austria-Germany border.

Bronze Head of Sulis Minerva from the Bath, England dated to the Late 1st Century on display at the Roman Baths Museum in Bath, England
This bronze head was discovered in 1727 and was an early indication that the Roman site at Bath was not a typical settlement. Gilt bronze sculptures are rare finds from Roman Britain as only two other fragments are known.
The head is probably from the cult statue of the goddess which would have stood within her Temple beside the Sacred Spring. From there she may have looked out across the Temple courtyard to the site of the great altar, the site of sacrifice, which stood at the heart of that sacred space.  The statue may well be an original object from the foundation of the site in the later first century CE, which means that it was probably well over 300 years old when it met its demise.
The head is slightly larger than life size, suggesting that the original statue was an imposing sight. Hidden in the hair line are several small holes which once held rivets that fixed her tall Corinthian helmet to her head.
Examination of the head has revealed that it has six layers of gilding.  The first two use a technique known as fire gilding whilst the four later layers are applied as gold leaf.  The head has a number of imperfections. There is corrosion which has affected it in parts where it lay in the ground for over a thousand years.  There is also a strange rectangular cut beneath the chin.  It is thought that this may result from a flaw in the original casting process in which a bubble on the surface may have been cut out and filled with an inserted plate.  When gilded over it would not have been visible.  This plate has subsequently fallen out as a result of corrosion whilst in the ground.
