#insomniac spider-man my beloved

ok incoming big spider-man rant bc I like complaining and this just sort of bothers me

I'm currently reading the original 1963 ASM comics, I've been slowly making my way through them for a couple of years now and I have to say considering how little time Peter Parker actually spends in high school and how many of his most iconic relationships and moments happen while he's in college or after he's graduated it becomes more and more frustrating that everyone continues to insist that he must remain a high school student forever

I mean, there are 441 issues in ASM (1963) and he graduates high school in issue #28, that's only about 6% of the run and not even mentioning the hundreds of other Spider-Man comics that come out alongside or after this series

most of the iconic Spider-Man characters are only introduced when he goes to college, he barely knows MJ all that well until college, he hasn't even met Gwen or Harry yet, he knows Flash but Flash is still just a bully and romantic rival to him, most major milestones for the character outside of Uncle Ben dying and joining the Bugle haven't even happened yet, his high school life is actually one of the least interesting aspects of the comics

Peter Parker as a character was kind of designed to grow and change over the years, he was made so you can watch him go through all these major life milestones gradually over time and relate to them, we watch him get a job, struggle with love, graduate high school, get engaged, grapple with the deaths of loved ones, graduate college, put his aunt in assisted living, struggle for money, get a shitty apartment, become a teacher, get married, and so on, and most of these things only happen after high school

despite this, so many adaptations and fan interpretations revolve around him in high school, but they still give him relationships with MJ, Harry, and Gwen, and storylines that only occur in the comics when he's an adult, it's almost as if there's this acknowledgement that he grows into a much more interesting character as he gets older yet they're still sort of trapped in this idyllic mindset that high school is the height of your life when, for most people, that's just not true, it's especially not true for Peter Parker who had no friends and was being bullied every day

like, idk, I just feel like people need to let go of this idea that because he started being Spider-Man at 15 that's the age he needs to stay forever because that's kind of antithetical to the point of the character

going through the research stations again in msm1 and while i really loved graham phillips’ performance in msm2, hearing scott porter again feels like a gut punch. “you know what bud…” i love him what the fuck. just one cutscene of him actually onscreen please god i would love to know what his harry felt like as a fully realized character bc the snippets leave a lot to be desired + scott’s performance as corrupted barry allen in suicide squad ktjl was one of the only redeeming parts of that game and makes my brain spin with possibilities for his venom

i almost feel like he really is more in line with the essence of john bubniak peter while the msm2 iteration of peter makes sense with graham. do you get it. do you get me

I am SO excited that you’re pulling from the Insomniac Spider-Man game, too! That’s my favorite Spider-Man content <3 and Spider-El my beloved!!!!! I am so excited to see where you all go with this! Especially since Spider-Man has such a wide array of villains to choose inspiration from!

(Also, if you are open to ideas- I’m pretty sure that at least in the Insomniac game, Peter has a favorite pizza place. Made me think of Argyle.)

Just your friendly daily reminder that Venom was created by the same guy who made Spawn back in the 90's, Todd McFarlane. Makes a lot of sense when you think about it, especially with how they're designed.

And believe it or not, Todd McFarlane is also one of the most influential comic artists in the industry, and he's one the of reasons that Spidy's webs are drawn with so much detail, and one of the reasons (at least I'm sure he was) why Spidy tends to be drawn and even animated so flexibly when he's web swinging.

Many Spider-Man comics especially once drawn by Todd McFarlane himself before he left Marvel, the Spider-Man games by Insomniac Games and Spider-Man 2003, and I would even say the Spider-verse movies, and are very good examples of that.

He's also one of the reasons Image Comics exists, leaving Marvel with a bunch of other people to from the company and making very edgy and dark and violent comic books that were very popular and beloved in 90's. I'm giving a very simplified version of the story though, feel free to look up history of the subject yourselves if you feel like it. I'm just being a silly little fangirl and artist who wanted to post about one of my favorite artists and facts about three of my favorite characters as well.

which are you more excited for? Starfield or Spider-Man 2? They both seem to have pretty high ambitions. Starfield has to hold up to Skyrim and Fallout while also being incredibly varied. Spider-man 2 has to continue the story and mechanics of Insomniac's Spider-man, a game that is almost universally beloved for its story and mechanics

Well they're really not all too comparable aside from both being Games I'm Excited About in 2023. It really comes down to how they deliver yknow. I'm EXTREMELY excited for Starfield, I've been looking forward to it for years and it's generally been my most anticipated title for two years in a row. But the problem is that its quality is a bit up in the air. We've seen the story time and time again of a game of its scope crashing and burning because it was simply mismanaged and too ambitious for its own good. On the flip side, I would be SHOCKED if Spider-Man 2 is not about as good or even better than I expect it will be. It really has everything in its favor right now and that means I feel a much more reliable kind of hype for it. In theory, I'm more excited for the PROMISE of Starfield, but I'm more confident in Spider-Man 2.

Spider-Man 2 would have to surpass my expectations a TON in order to take the spot as my favorite game this year when taking into account some of the absolute bangers that have come out beforehand, but if Starfield is as good as I hope it is then I'd say it's almost certainly a contender for my personal GOTY. Again, they're operating on different scales in my mind. The stakes are very different haha.

Okay so I’m a relatively new fan of Harold and trying to get into the fanbase but man these acronyms are A Lot….. seeing USM and MSM and SSM and JMD and WOSM……. my dude I am lost……. one crumb of guidance I beg you……….

So a lot of the time if it’s acronyms relating to the names of comics writers, I am not helpful. But here is what I can tell you

The live action universes that feature Harry are going to be referred to as the Raimiverse (the original trilogy with Tobey Maguire) and either TASM or the Webbverse, used interchangeably, to refer to The Amazing Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield)

To my knowledge, whenever someone is referring to comics under the name The Amazing Spider Man, that’s going to be called ASM instead of TASM. TASM is for movies, ASM is for comics.

There are more animated series than I can count but the ones referred to most often in here are TSSM, The Spectacular Spider-Man featuring Josh Keaton and James Arnold Taylor as Peter and Harry, USM, Ultimate Spider-Man featuring Drake Bell and Matt Lanter as Peter and Harry respectively, and MSM or MSM 2017, Marvel’s Spider Man, featuring my beloved Robbie Daymond and Max Mittleman as Peter and Harry respectively.

Confusingly, MSM is also used to refer to the current insomniac game series, though they are often referred to with some variation of the word insomniac to differentiate them and keep the tags organized. However, if something is referring to MSM 2017 it’s almost always referring to the show and if it’s MSM2 or MSM2023 in my experience it’s almost always the game. Yes, this is confusing.

Just as confusing is the fact that despite SSM is used to refer to the spectacular spider man comics and separate them from the show similar to ASM, USM is the acronym used for both the show and the comics in most instances I’ve seen. So you’re just gonna have to use context clues. Most things referencing a comic are usually going to include issue numbers which helps.

Comics arcs that commonly have their own acronyms are OMD, aka One More Day, and TCW, aka The Child Within. Sometimes you’ll also see KLH to refer to Kravens Last Hunt but that’s not nearly as relevant to Harry so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

There’s also TNAS, The New Animated Series which came out near the release of Spider-Man 2002 and is intended to continue it, but because it’s kind of terrible you’re not gonna see it often. The 90’s animated series is much better but has no acronym and will usually be specified as specifically the 90’s Animated Series.

I believe WOSM is simply referring to the World Of Spider-Man but I could be wrong. (Edit: I was wrong, it’s Web Of Spider-Man. Everyone say thanks @theopolis)

I know JMD is referring to a specific comics writer but I’m not even confident of the name of the top of my head. Because I’m not terribly proficient in the comics quite yet, I’m probably gonna ask @oliveroctavius and/or @theopolis who are far more familiar with them than I am for that and any other comics acronyms I’m missing and I hope they don’t mind the tag.
