on a binge of watching streamers play tcoaal and the flashback segment where the Graves visit Douglas's parents' house is living rent free in my head.

When Ashley bluntly asks "Why aren't you dead yet?" towards the Granpa, rather than just answering her, everyone is caught off guard, incredulous and offended. There's an exclamation point above the Granpa's head, Andrew nervously laughs it off as a joke while trying to lie and say Ashley is feeling something she's not in order to save himself from Renee's untoward wrath, the Grandma and Douglas say nothing at all, Renee is visibly displeased and shoos them away immediately.

That single interaction just paints such a vivid picture to me:

Nobody takes Ashley seriously, ever, to the point she gets ignored entirely.

Everyone is so obsessed with this hyper-specific facade of "normalcy" that Ashley's blunt and unfiltered way of speaking instantly ostracizes her and, unlike Andrew, she cannot mask it away. Cannot or doesn't want to.

It's made all the worse by the fact everyone else is just as crass/dark humored as Ashley but they think themselves better just by virtue of ~speaking nicely~ looking at you Renee and Andrew

Either way, it makes me gnaw at the bars of my cage.
