The Infinite Forest
Sighs. This post has been on my mind since we saw the trailer for Echoes, because they showed us the gate to the Infinite Forest and I thought: how many people even recognise that? Let alone have been there? Or know stuff about it? It's not been in the game for over 4 years, outside of a few pvp maps.
The Infinite Forest was a victim of the yoinkening of planets at the end of Arrivals. Unlike Mars and Titan that have since returned, Mercury has not (and neither has Io) so there was really no reason to think about it until they decided to do something with that. And it appears they've decided, something I hoped they might do in Echoes, given that we've speculated from the start that it would be a Vex season.
But now that we did get the proof that we'll be dealing with it somehow, I want to get into it, and mostly because they gave us zero explanation about how is it even possible for us to consider the Forest. I'm going to have a normal time with this one. I know we'll get at least some answers in a few days, but I need to cook in the meantime so I don't descend into madness (too late). Obviously spoilers for this week under the cut, and also a long post:
What is the Infinite Forest?
How does it all work and why?
What happened to it?
Echoes
What is the Infinite Forest?
The best, and arguably only, source for this is unfortunately a vaulted campaign, Curse of Osiris. Here's a link to the campaign from Destiny Lore Vault, but there are also playthroughs around from the time it launched. It's not needed to watch the whole thing, although it is fairly short, but this is where most of the information about it comes from.
There's also the Osiris comics that accompanied the DLC; first two are available on Bungie's site. The third is only in the physical book, helpfully scanned here.
Probably the most concise explanations are from the campaign:
Reflection of Osiris: Behold â the Infinite Forest! A planet sized prediction engine, simulating trillions of realities in parallel, all geared towards a single Vex purpose. Keep going, and you'll see. Sagira: The Vex are simulating reality in here. Brute forcing the future. And before you ask: everything in here IS real enough to kill you.
And this entire lore tab:
Physically, I am beneath the surface of Mercury. That is what Sagira's sensors say. The Vex hollowed out the planet, replaced its molten heart with cold right angles. But that is not what I see. I see infinity. An infinity of possible worlds, so perfectly simulated as to be indistinguishable from the experiences I once called "reality." I can touch them, taste them, pass lifetimes in them! They grow within this machine like fruit upon a treeâno, a forest of trees, its fractal expansion nigh unmeasurable.
Essentially, the Infinite Forest is a simulation engine that the Vex use to make predictions and find possibilities that suit their goals. It's physically located inside of Mercury; the Vex dug into the planet and replaced its insides with the engine. So far it has only been accessible from Mercury, from a single gate. Putting my 7 year old screenshots here like grabbing pictures of loved ones from a photo album:
Ikora noted that Osiris spent a long time studying that gate back in the day, believing it's the entrance. And he was correct.
There is a Vex gateway near your location. Osiris spent years studying it. He was convinced it was the door to the infinite Forest. If it is still possible to find Osiris, we need to open that door.
Osiris, or rather, his reflection, also said:
First, I will show you where it all began. Mercury, untold centuries ago, before the Vex arrived. Here, the Vex planted the seed that became the Infinite Forest, and its Mind, Panoptes. Panoptes has a single purpose â reshape reality for the Vex.
To keep things simple, the campaign revolved around us stopping Panoptes from achieving the Vex' goals by using the Infinite Forest. We ended up killing it, of course. We did so by hopping around through the Forest, going to simulated pasts and futures.
But the Forest largely consists of a really weird constantly shifting space that looks like this:
Thank you past me for this really helpful screenshot. It looks like it's an open sky, but it's not; the ceiling is a solid flat surface. That is the surface of Mercury, seen from the inside of the planet. On the edges of the picture, there's two tall structures; one looks worn down and destroyed, the other looks newly built. These are the gates leading to the actual simulations. The left one leads to a simulated future and the right to a simulated past.
These structures are called "trees" and are the reason why this place is called the Infinite Forest. Each of these "trees" generates a simulation and leads there, but you have to go through this shifting reality with ever-changing platforms to reach them. This is the physical space needed to essentially "run" the Forest.
You can still see this on pvp maps Fragment and Convergence:
A lot of the stuff about how the Vex actually made this was not entirely confirmed at the time; the stuff about Mercury being converted back during the Collapse was something that's been in the lore since literally D1, but not much was known about how true any of that was or how it started and how it was done. This was somewhat cleared up later, in the first page of Trials and Tribulations (from Worthy). I say "somewhat" because like. Reading this page is an exercise for sanity:
Chrome-hooked appendages |breached sky, counted in triplets| stretched for miles through sun-soaked atmosphere. They bored |with deepest intentions| into the marigold sands. From the great temporal chasms |wailing mouths of creation| flowed an ocean |a second conception| of radiolarian fluid. Across the horizon |of definitive sprawl| the scene was |super-imposed design| resonant and |uniquely| multiplicative. Each injection site |form mirrored in the hundreds of thousands| fostered a new lineage in stone and steel and fluid. |They would live| the new age in sub-routine |sleep| and observation. They would foster the |metallic| seeds of a generation in |twilight| time. From the sites bubbled pools |progeny| of |endless possibility| that murmured chaotic, |lullabies of change| and wrung the Traveler's Light from Mercury. The Light coalesced |imbibed| within the pools. The planet transformed |reborn| into a |sleepless dream| machine of prediction.
Yeah. What this whole thing seems to be implying is a confirmation of Mercury being converted by the Vex during the Collapse. The Vex flooded the planet with radiolaria and drilled into it, changing its terraformed environment into a Vex world. Some of this is shown in Curse when we first visit the simulated past. The Vex appeared and started raising the spires and transforming the surface of Mercury into what we know it as. Its core was eventually fully replaced by the Infinite Forest.
After we killed Panoptes, Osiris essentially claimed the Forest for himself and returned there sort of indefinitely. He would leave years later, when he contacted us in Season of Dawn, though we know that he was periodically leaving anyway, since he was building the Sundial. It's not really been used for anything else, outside of various adventures and the quest for saving Saint which I went into in this post.
How does it all work and why?
It's always been kinda weird that the Forest was not a bigger deal, though it makes sense if we consider the out-of-game factors and the fans' general dislike of Mercury as a whole (which I personally think is a skill issue). The Forest was also difficult to work with so it was difficult to make new content for it which is probably why it was never really done, even though realistically, setting-wise, it should've.
It's mentioned in lore here and there, and Osiris spent his time there a lot up until Dawn. The Infinite Forest also alerted him that our actions drastically changed the Vex predictions which was serious and important enough for him to finally leave. So for all intents and purposes, the Forest was always a big deal, just difficult to implement into gameplay. This is quite unfortunate because it should've reasonably been something to use more, including explaining its danger a bit more in-depth over time. While Osiris did have a major influence over it post-Panoptes, the place was still largely Vex-controlled and they still had access to it.
So why is that dangerous in the first place? After all, it's just a simulation engine. That's true, but the danger is in how the Vex were using those simulations. By having access to a place that generates trillions of situations and possibilities, it allowed them to explore options that would normally be almost impossible to explore in-person, physically. Even the Vex, who can exist outside of time, would need to spend... well... time and resources to explore these options by simply time travelling. With the Forest, they could just generate them all at once, instantly, with no time passing outside of the Forest.
They could use this to simulate anything and then explore what would happen if they followed that possibility, which allowed them to predict more accurately. It allowed them to essentially run a certain scenario through every single possible iteration and see the outcome of all of them, then pick the option that suits them best and act accordingly. It could also let them study their enemies; by simulating many situations and observing how the enemies react in those situations, they could learn about the strategies their enemies use.
This is incredibly powerful and dangerous. But are there limitations to their simulations? Sort of... As we know, the Vex can't simulate Light or any other paracausality, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they can't try. This is where things get complicated because we lack a lot of the details about how this all works.
From what we can tell, the Forest can include simulations that feature paracausality and Guardians; it's seen in the intro cutscene for Curse where Osiris casually wanders into the Guardians raiding the Vault of Glass. It was also briefly mentioned in Lightfall's CE (page 28), where Elsie explores different timelines. In one of them, she finds Osiris wielding Stasis who tells her that he saw her wielding it:
"I saw glimpses of you wielding this power during my time in the Infinite Forest."
This is where things get complicated because we don't truly know if there are meaningful differences between normal simulations and simulations produced by a planet-size machine. The Vex, for all intents and purposes, can't really simulate Light and Guardians, but could they create simulations based on what they've personally experienced? After all, the Vex from the Vault of Glass experienced the Guardians raiding them; can they load up their memories and simply replay it? Would that even count as a simulation or is that simply just a recording that you can access within the Forest?
Is it accessible in other Vex spaces or is the Infinite Forest unique in some way? After all, there is also the Vex network as well as corridors of time. There's also some sort of overlap between them, according to Osiris:
...Vex security measures where the network intersects with the corridors of time.
There's even the implication that a simulation from the Forest could potentially escape the engine and enter the real world.
Sagira: Hey, team! Copies of the Cabal invasion are trapped inside the Infinite Forest. On the, uh, off chance one of them escapes, possibly armed with world-breaking Vex tech⊠Ghost: Wouldnât be the first time. Weâll handle this.
There is also the whole question about timelines and realities and how that works in the Forest. Can you use the Forest to look into real timelines and realities, those that might be happening somewhere, or are they just projections and simulations of possibilities? Could you interact with them, and affect other timelines? This is an interesting question now that Echoes is going on with all the stuff about the Conductor and what's happening to Saint, but we currently don't know the answers.
What I think is the most likely is that the Infinite Forest is somehow unique and can offer a lot more than the normal Vex network; its simulation options are so well-developed and so powerful that it can genuinely simulate a lot more than the Vex usually would be able to, including showing glimpses of paracausality, especially glimpses that the Vex have themselves recorded in their interactions with Guardians. Then, they can use the Forest to try and build on that, essentially train the engine by feeding it trillions of data points to attempt to make accurate simulations that lead to good predictions.
And these seem to be the key words: accurate and prediction. The point of simulations is not just to look at things, it's to use them to be able to predict things, giving the Vex an advantage. This is directly referenced and discussed in the lore:
There's just one thing: if Osiris used the Infinite Forest to develop his prophecies, and the Infinite Forest cannot accurately simulate Light, how did Osiris predict the Traveler would wake? The Forest's very inability to predict this very thing is what prevented Panoptes from breaking ground with its apocalyptic calculations.
So what exactly is the Forest capable of? It can definitely show the past even if it involves paracausality. It can also show the future, though the accuracy of any future predictions may be in question, depending on the amount of paracausality involved. It's very much implied that it can also show other timelines and/or realities. And of course, it can simulate future possibilities, as well as show simulations of anything from the past; events or places alike. For example, Osiris simulated the Fundament, apparently:
Ghost: The Forest can generate so many Hive - it might as well be their homeworld. Sagira: We've thought about that. Ghost: Have you simulated the Hive homeworld? Sagira: Didn't go well.
If there are specific limitations, we're not sure what they may be. There probably are, but they're most likely deliberately not spelled out to prevent any kind of conflict with stuff they might want to add to the Forest later; like for example now, with Echoes. Because there's a lot of questions right now about the Forest now that Ikora has so casually told us we're going to be going back in there. So...
What happened to it?
As has been established, the Forest is physically located on Mercury. Or rather, in Mercury. Its one and only entrance is on Mercury as well. And Mercury has been eaten by the Witness over 4 years ago. So that's it then? Well no. Not only is the Forest on an inaccessible planet, it has actually been sealed, from the inside, before the planet was taken.
He struggled with his pack as a tempest beat on his eardrums. He withdrew his Infinite Simulacrum, impossibly small in this immense space, and with trembling fingers synchronized it to the frequency of the crack in the Forest. It ticked like a metronome and then⊠Silence. The Forest was sealed.
Instead of evacuating, Brother Vance decided to stay on Mercury, go into the Forest, and seal it. I go about it for a long time in this post, but basically he believed that it would be really bad if the Pyramids gained access to the Forest. He also believed that the Sundial did something to the timelines and that the Pyramids could exploit that, as well as the Infinite Forest being somehow "the key to all of this."
He also wanted to use the Forest to... spread hope. Through the timelines?
"I will walk into the Infinite Forest and spread hope, Guardian."
He essentially wanted to do something and prove that even Lightless people can still help. He appeared to be willing to die for this, which is quite strange mostly because this whole idea and endeavour wasn't in the name of Osiris. Hell, in a way, it was about doing something to fix the unknown consequences of Osiris' meddling with the timelines.
You notice Vance's hands are balled tightly at his sides. "The Pyramids draw close. Through this system and beyond, the Lightless are filled with fear. I am no Osiris, true, but in my small way, I will bring light to their darkness." There is clarity in his voice. "I will tell them they must believe."
Since I've gone into it in the other post in a lot more details, I won't go into it here again, although I could. But the point that I want to get across is that the sealing of the Infinite Forest was quite a significant part of Arrivals and the whole plot of the evacuation of Mercury (or rather the non-evacuation of Mercury; the sole reason for Vance staying was to seal the Forest).
In another post (you'll have to scroll through the back-and-forth insanity) I also mentioned how much of Vance's story in Arrivals seemed to be connected to him losing his mind about the effects of the Sundial on the timelines. It also directly links to the Perfect Paradox. All of these things have been quite prominently connected to this episode, especially the stuff with the Sundial and what Osiris has done with it and how it may or may not have affected the timelines and, most of all, Saint and the whole ordeal of saving him.
It's fairly unclear how many characters know what happened to the Forest though. The YW knows obviously because Vance told us directly. I do believe that Zavala would also know as we reported back to him, which also most likely extends to Ikora as well. Another issue is that we don't really have any specific proof that the sealing was successful or permanent. It seems like it was, but a lot of stuff could've happened in the past 4 years of Mercury being in an anomaly.
As I've mentioned many times before, Mercury is the last unsolved plot from Arrivals; as in, we genuinely don't know anything about it. Mars has returned in WQ and Ana's side of the story was concluded in Seraph. While Io is still gone, Asher's story was concluded in Defiance through Avalon. Titan returned in Deep, which solved the story of the planet and also Sloane. We know why these planets were taken (with the exception of Io, though it's fair to assume it had something to do with the Pyramidion because of Asher's story being tied to it), and we know what happened to all of the vendors. Except Mercury and Vance; two things inherently connected to the Infinite Forest.
We don't truly know why Mercury was yoinked, though it's once again fair to assume it was most likely for the Forest. But you know. It got sealed so the Witness couldn't do anything with it and we have no idea what it was doing with Mercury all this time. We also don't know what the hell was Vance on about when he talked about the "anchored timelines" and how the Forest is incredibly important to everything. Due to how unreliable he is, it could just be his usual cringefail. After all, Osiris himself did not have any plans for the Forest himself; he was upset that he'd lose it, but he didn't think anything more about it, even if during Dawn he insisted that the Forest cannot be sealed or destroyed yet.
But also I think dismissing it all is an easy mistake to make, and possibly a deliberate one. Everything with Vance is written to be as easy to dismiss as possible, but he did know certain things that were absolutely correct and real. Not to go on about the tones again, but. Yeah. And given the current situation...
Echoes
Failsafe has come up with a plan for which she needs data from the Vex. She specifically needs data that can be compared to the altered Vex on Nessus, so we need large amounts of information that hasn't been changed or messed with. She concluded that the best source of that data would be Saint's dead body. It exists in a specific space (and time) and would have this information; information that has not been altered or influenced by anything else because that Saint is dead and preserved as is.
Failsafe explained this to Ikora and Ikora agreed that this is the best source, she's just worried about how this will affect Osiris and Saint. She doesn't want us to tell them. So next reset, we're going to the Infinite Forest to find Saint's tomb again. Yay!
But like. How?
They presented this so casually, with Ikora even saying that the best "accessible" source of this data is the Forest and Saint's tomb. And I know that they know that we know that Mercury is gone and that the Forest was sealed. But they've already showed us the gate to the Forest on Nessus, twice: in the mini showcase and then in the intro to the season in-game:
The first picture is showing the gate when it's open. And yes, this specific portal effect has only ever been used for the Forest. The second image shows the gate when it's closed with that impenetrable barrier. The structure itself is different from the original; it's worn down, coloured differently and doesn't have the same tip - instead there's the weird orb and the statue. It looks far more Nessus-like, and closer to present-day Vex, or maybe future Vex. But it's guarded by Precursors, so I don't know. It definitely doesn't look like the original however.
We clearly aren't going to Mercury. And even if we were, how would we enter? Neither Failsafe nor Ikora have mentioned this little problem and it seems as if they already know that the gate is on Nessus; I assume they'll discuss the details of this in the Act 2 finale next week. But the problem is that without all of this context, how do they even explain the issue with the Forest? They can always shorten this to some reasonable quick explanation, but they still have to explain how are we entering the Forest. There's a few key problems.
Obviously, number 1 is that the Forest is on Mercury and as of now Mercury is still in the anomaly.
The Forest itself is sealed from the inside.
So far it has not been possible (or at least not known to us) to enter the Forest from any other location. As we've seen, Osiris spent years looking for the entrance and back in Arrivals he was quite upset about losing the Forest. If he simply had the ability to enter it without being physically on Mercury, then why bother or lament Mercury's loss?
It is, to our knowledge, one of a kind. It took quite a tremendous effort to build it and it requires a lot of power to run; a whole planet.
Possible solutions:
Mercury is back and Ikora hasn't told anyone yet because she doesn't want anyone to go there yet; perhaps it's in quarantine. I don't think this is very likely, but it's possible.
Opening a gate to the Forest from another location IS possible and we just didn't know about it.
Opening a gate to the Forest from another location is possible only because of the situation with the Echo; a powerful source of paracausal power can maybe help us do this remotely. So this simply wasn't an option before the Echo's existence.
The Vex and the Conductor have built or are still building a new Forest inside of Nessus this time. The Vex lost access to the original, either simply because of the anomaly or because it was sealed or both, so now with the Echo they're just doing it again, and better. So the Forest we're going into is not the original, but a new one; the assumption being that the data from the old Forest is accessible to the Vex so the new Forest can essentially run the same code as the old one, allowing us access to Saint's tomb.
The Vex and the Conductor only have to build a new gate that can lead us to the old Forest, despite it being in an anomaly and despite it being sealed. It essentially just brute forced another door.
And the possibilities in regards to it being sealed:
As I mentioned before, maybe the sealing wasn't as successful as we (or Vance) thought.
Vance is somehow still alive and he will open it for us from the inside, essentially concluding his role from Arrivals.
Maybe the sealing wasn't permanent; either the Vex could eventually counteract this, or Vance couldn't hold it closed for very long. He's a Lightless man and it's quite dubious how long he could survive inside. Maybe the seal automatically broke when (if?) he died.
If we're going with the option that this is a new gate to the old Forest, then as I said before, this may simply be able to counteract the seal.
If we're dealing with a completely new Forest, the seal may simply not even be in effect. The old Forest is sealed, but we're not going to the old one so it doesn't matter.
What I'm assuming is that Osiris could open the gate if he saw one again, so if the gate is simply now on Nessus (either to a new Forest or connecting to the old one), Osiris can just use his cubes as he did before and open it again, counteracting the seal. Vance's device used to seal it was made from Osiris' notes anyway, so I'm assuming it's something similar to the cubes. In that case it can just be opened with the same thing.
Ikora will just blast it open like she did back in Curse. Seal or no seal, new or old Forest, she doesn't give a shit,
There's an option for all of these that's basically just they don't mention it all. I don't think this is very likely, but hey. It's possible!
I've been running these scenarios in my head for days. Actually, I've been running them ever since the showcase for Echoes showed us the gate to the Forest, but this significantly increased when this week confirmed that we are indeed heading in there. And it was delivered so matter-of-factly as if there aren't any of these problems and scenarios I listed above. This is baffling me. I know there will be some explanations offered, but the setup completely blindsided me with how it was delivered. Ikora with the simple "Oh yeah the best place to grab data from is the Infinite Forest. Pack it up boys." And I'm standing there with a 8 hours long presentation asking her to explain how. She blocks my number on vannet.
Perhaps the situation is far simpler than I'm making it out to be. It would be really easy to just write the old Forest and Mercury away as being permanently lost. That way you don't have to explain or deal with any of the stuff with the anomaly or the yoinkening or Vance's shenanigans. I will obviously remain forever unhinged about it if that's the case because I simply need to know what happened, but it's the easiest way to deal with this. The Echo allowed the Vex to make a new Forest, they're using massive amounts of radiolaria and the core of Nessus to just recreate it all, then they copied all the data from the old one into it, booted it up and that's it.
But what if the seal is in effect? Or what if we're dealing with the old Forest on Mercury that's still in the anomaly? How do they plan to deal with that in a single mission? Well... We have no clue.
Bungie article lore time, but back last year in the State of the Game article, they said this about the pvp map Multiplex:
Although many of us had been thinking about a lo-fi Vex map for the Crucible, the challenge of this palette was the possible lack of player orientation in the play space. We thought bringing the Mars palette into the Vex Network realm would be a great way to mitigate this while adding an evocative look. Narratively, the space is in the middle of compiling the Infinite Forest, so this is what youâll see in action.
Yes, while everyone was losing their mind about this article, I was looking for lore about the Infinite Forest. But yeah. It seems like they have information about it in the network and they were using it to compile that information; perhaps preparing to make a new one? Or simply using it for data.
So essentially, the Vex could have enough information about the Forest to recreate it, and better now with the Echo, which would allow us to simply bypass the anomaly and the Forest being locked, while allowing us to enter and still find Saint's tomb. This is by far the easiest solution.
But I want a conclusion on Mercury and Vance. I feel like this episode is the only time to really do that and they've been giving us so many Mercury things already, clearly showing that it was a big inspiration for it all. The music, the assets, the enemies. This includes the stuff about Saint and his grave, as well as the whole thing with the Perfect Paradox. There's still Act 3 of course and some still unknown exotic mission, but I feel like the quest that has us literally going into the Infinite Forest to revisit a place not even from Dawn, but from Curse, is the best spot to also deal with this.
I just have no idea how that's going to happen and I wanted to list out the stuff that would have to be somehow addressed and solved, even if the solution ends up being the simplest one. I also wanted to try and list some information about the Forest itself since this thing has not been in the game for years. I hope this was useful and that it explains things well.
Anyway, I've spent the whole week pacing around my room like a wild animal. Help.
In conclusion:
#destiny 2#echoes#infinite forest#vex#nessus#osiris#brother vance#long post#lore vibing#i've been having a normal one this week#and yes that's me in the photo. don't even worry about it#needed to get this out to prepare my brain with all scenarios for tuesday#most likely it'll be something wild that i've not considered#but i'm really really interested to see how they'll explain the forest stuff. i'm very excited for tuesday#and scared for my emotions of course

It's just that well simply put Gohan didnt have any time to himself ever. There was always bullshit happening. Then Goku died and Goten was born and Gohan had to keep his mother from falling apart and his baby brother healthy and happy. And it's rewarding work. But yknow
When he wasn't tending to the baby or helping with other domestic chores, he was in his room studying. It's nice to learn about the world he fought so hard to save. It's also nice to not have to have a relationship with his body (as with fighting) so that it's easier to dissociate from all the bullshit. Academia was a lifeline out. It was also a definitive "good" thing to be doing. It was also an escape. And also a source of the stress that he's so accustomed to. And yknow. Maybe the letters started to dance on the page after a while. A life unlived will find life in other places. Maybe the historical figures were his friends. Maybe he memorized chemicals like one would memorize constellations. Maybe different mathematical functions began to represent and facilitate different experiences of emotion. You know how it is
I mean maybe not. Maybe he got out enough and was present enough to not dip into that. If his time alone was really that needed, then I imagine that he would get angry if interrupted; but I don't imagine that he snapped often when his mother called him to attention or when his brother needed something from him. I think that he finds fulfillment and peace in his family and he wants to be there with them. But I think that he also finds habits of repression or self-denial.
I'm not saying that he represses all of his anger, because he doesn't. What he does repress is infinite amounts of survival rage. What he doesn't repress - and what seems like he's not even aware of when he expresses it - is sharp annoyance. A mild example would be when he snapped at Goten for bothering him during his training, which was super funny. A more poignant example is Every Time Somebody Insults his Great Saiyaman Persona somehow. First he was interjecting into his classmates' (strangers!) conversation to correct their misnaming of the new hero, and he didn't seem to notice how rude his tone was or how surprised his classmates were. Then later he stopped two reckless drivers, and they made fun of his goofy persona, and Gohan (without resistance) just threw a petulant fit - and he did not seem to notice how he was Destroying The Road by stamping his foot.
My favorite example was when Krillin told him he looked dumb. I should probably get screenshots. Gohan's Eyebrows Twitched and Reared like Rattlesnakes. And his passive aggression was enough to constituent manslaughter. Masked behind saccharine positivity. It was a vile display. What do YOU know about Fashion, Quiverin..! (<- What we sometimes call Krillin in my house becasue he's always cringing and quivering and being fearful lol.)
OK I didn't get screenshots but I have this timestamped video from the youtube.
youtube
And it makes sense that Gohan is super defensive about The Great Saiyaman. It's the first thing that he's gotten to do/be that was up to him.
I understand that Bulma designed the original get-up, but it was still collaborative; it's not like when Chichi dresses him in what she can afford to buy or make, or when Piccolo dresses him in what he himself likes to wear. And Gohan picked the name. He picked the poses. He picked the voice. He picked the personality. He picked the role.
You know that Oscar Wilde quote that goes something like "give a man a mask and he will tell you the truth"? Yeah. There's madness behind that mask.
It's also a very significant time for him because he's for the first time having the opportunity to associate with peers in a consistent way. And he wants so bad to be "normal" and that's also why the mask is so integral and alluring. And he wants to be a normal bloke and make normal friends, but at the same time, he's out of practice without really realizing it; he hasn't come to terms with how in order to make friends, you have to put yourself out there. He thinks that he can simply make friends while hiding himself and lying about everything. And when Videl starts trying to figure out who he is and pry the mask off, it's a horrifying inconvenience. And Gohan just isn't in the habit of receiving well others' companionship, having lived isolated for so long; when Videl makes him teach her how to fly, he's nice to her, but you can tell that he just wants her to leave.
Her insistence on drilling into him is why they become friends and eventually marry, though.
He seems like an optimistic fellow, and his appreciate for life must be sincere, as his history necessitates it - if life sucked, all of that would have been for nought. But remember, for a good seven years it was just him, his mother, and the new baby. No drama or adventure to bring him out into the world. No friends his age that he could connect and evolve with. Just him up there on Mt Paozu stagnating.
There was definitely a lot of goodness and happiness and stargazing and lovely dinners and hanging out with dinosaurs. But there was also a lot of boredom and avoidance and why-is-the-baby-crying and mom-please-put-the-wooden-spoon-down and mom-please-stop-crying and can-i-have-the-time-to-study-unbothered-please and an undercurrent of feeling bogged down that really isn't apparent until you get out and get moving.
Gohan never says this outloud or thinks this definitively, but it's a natural truth, like the wood that a house is made of - he is going to do everything he can to be a good brother and to protect his baby brother. And it's a given, too, that he'll do everything it takes to keep his mother sane and happy, because everybody else shies away from her, and it's SORT OF Gohan's fault that Goku had died, and he very much wants to give back for all of the nurturing that his mother has given him.
And when you want to be a force of Good that badly, it completely turns you away from the parts of you that may be Bad, and encourages you to be afraid of certain feelings or needs.
When Gohan snaps at people out of irritability or defensiveness, it really seems like he doesn't know that he's doing it, and it comes out in the way that a hurt child may just act out. Everything else that is ugly about him just gets buried deep. And that makes him a weirdo. That's what it seems like anyway

^^ Hi I've never seen or heard of you before in my life the above screenshot is the only post of yours I've ever seen but I DO that sounds so interesting is it too late
Nah, it's not late at all. I love talking about any AU whenever so don't be afraid to ask about any. This AU was mainly inspired by the era of "Steven Goes to Gravity Falls" comics and art and I just wanted to add my own little spin on things.
As for the GF x IT x SU au (Infinite Falling Universe), I did make 2 posts giving some background here and here but that was way back before Book of Bill came out. Some things have changed but the basic concept is that Ryan and Min have spent a few months on the road, picking up the rest of the Infinity Train cast while looking for places to play as CCJ. After a brutal storm, they end up (literally) crashing into Gravity Falls where Steven and Soos find them and take them back to the shack. The van is wrecked and they're already pretty low on money, so they all take jobs at the shack and work there for the summer with Steven. Cue Dipper trying to find out more about the train, the author of the journal, and a few skeletons their new magic friends may have in their closet.
A few things have changed after reading Book of Bill (mostly with Ford studying on the Train, Amelia "helping" him use its science to bring his muse to life with the promise that he'll bring back her own muse, the backstabbing afterward, and Bill taking advantage of the fact that Lake and Hazel are denizens for his own needs) but I'd be happy to go into further detail with specifics (especially with Amelia and Hazel and Lake's side) if anyone else is interested. Thank you for asking!

Sonic and Infinite are so fucking GRAUGHHHHHHHH I want. To study them in a lab. I donât know how to convey the emotions I feel for this dog and hedgehog so please bare with me
Before I start my bs I just wanted to say this post actually goes out to @neurotypical-sonic and uh @beloved-user (and maybe a few other people but those were the only 2 that I saw had said anything at the time of writing this) because they wanted to see this content in the world so shoutout to them for giving me the courage to post about these cringe fail mobians (I am the sonic and infinite psychoanalysis anon btw)
thereâs so much under the cut please be careful also please be nice itâs 2 am and Iâm very emotionally fragile
The fact that sonic and infinite are 2 sides of the same coin yet also thematic foils to each other is just sending me over the deep end I canât take it ARGHHHHHHH (I am willingly taking it)
Youâre probably asking âwhat the actual fuck are you going on about dudeâ and to this I raise you all of this entire post (youâre gonna regret asking)
A few things before I start, this is obviously gonna be Forces bullshit because I Bear The Curseâąïžalso Iâm only gonna be talking about the English version of the game because sadly I have not been able to play or see the japanese dub yet, Iâll do that later thoughÂ
Also if thereâs photos with shit quality, sorry, thatâs on me
Ok autism activated letâs go
Letâs start with our obvious main man Sonic, the blue blur. Iâm gonna start with something that irked a lot of people, and that is the fact that Sonic seemingly came out fine after being tortured for 6 months.
The thing is, he was absolutely not fine, at all, it was just so subtle that it was genuinely hard to tell, but once you notice, you continue to notice. The first thing you can see is that he is acting a lot more brutal I guess I could say???Â
I mean, look at the end of the Zavok fight, he beats the ever loving shit out of Zavok with his hands, not a few homing attack or spin dashes, his fucking hands, I donât know how often that happens outside of games where the actual gimmick is hand to hand combat, but it seems pretty weird to me how he just keeps hitting Zavok and he just stares at him as he falls, panting and out of breath from how relentlessly he was attacking him
Second, heâs constantly talking about how he wants and will get revenge for what happened, he doesnât let up that heâs going to get revenge, and I was actually kind of shocked when he started saying that I was kinda like âwoah calm down buddyâ (note, one of these screenshots is from the wiki because I couldnât get the image from the game, also, these 2 are just from the cutscenes I could find, thereâs so much more, this hog can hold so much malice and rage)
Third? Now this one is my favorite to talk about, because it really shows just how drastic Sonic and Infinite really are, the scene it occurs in is during the infinite fight with sonic and the avatar character, during the first stage where itâs just sonic
You may say âok whatâs special about the reskinned metal sonic fight?â sarcastically but this is a very important fact to me, and the fact is that Sonic just straight up implies to Infiniteâs face that heâs gonna murder him!
The line he says is played off as a kinda joke, but the way Sonic says it is so genuine that itâs a little bit disturbing, itâs a fridge horror kind of moment where you look at the line, maybe giggle, but after a quick google you realize just how fucked the line is because of the inclusion of one word, one single word.
The word being âEpitaph.â An Epitaph being the phrase or words written on someoneâs tombstone in memory of them.
Now, you may know what line Iâm referring to if youâre like me and reply that fight alot, but if you donât know the line thatâs fine, Iâm gonna explain it either way because itâs very important to me!
So the fight starts and the first lines said are these;
Infinite: What would you like your epitaph to read? How about âHere lies the blue buffoonâ?
Sonic: Why not âHere dozes the masked clownâ? Might as well make it for the person who needs one, right?
I think you can see where Iâm going with this point, letâs move on now to the other point I wanted to make, which is also kind of a major tone shift from the point above
This point ties in with the â2 sides of the same coinâ bit, but the point I want to make is that Sonic needed companionship to win. (Take a drink of water every time I write the word âcompanionshipâ or anything similar starting now, see how hydrated you get)
He needed the avatar character to support him throughout that fight, he needed the avatar & classic to help him defeat the eggman and ruby as well, he needed companionship.Â
This theme of him needing support and a companion is echoed through the very song that is the theme of forces, I am, of course, referring to Fistbump
AGGHHHH I LOVE FISTBUMP SO MUCH ITâS SO GOOD THEMATICALLY AND ITâS ALSO JUST A GOOD SONGi want you to know Iâm snarling and biting and growling like a rabid animal but in a good way Iâm sorry I just needed to say that real quick back to the point I was trying to make
Now, the first indication that Sonic needs companionship is that Fistbump is literally him âspeakingâ to the avatar character, the lyrics portray this perfectly, but I am going to stop myself before I go on a tangent about this song for too long, so next um dot point
The second indication he needs companionship using Fistbump is that it plays whenever he double boosts with the Avatar and during the level Null Space, the double boost is self explanatory, itâs them working together, theyâre being friendly friends!
What people may not completely get is me bringing up Null Space, because, once again, thereâs seemingly nothing special but there is. There is to me. In my heart. I love Null Space as well as the other stuff mentioned here because it ties into this insane bs Iâm concocting for my viewing pleasure that just so happens to get to be on tumblr too!!
Null Space is a level where Infinite sends Sonic and, accidentally, the Avatar character to the levelâs namesake, Null Space. Null Space is devoid of substance or life, it is the loneliest place you could ever be, but here Sonic and the Avatar are, the complete antithesis of such a concept, they are together, they are safe with each other, they are going to get out of there together.
And so they escape, and what is playing in the background as they do so? A version of Fistbump dedicated specifically to that level.
Before I can make the rest of my points, we have to talk about the elephant, er⊠jackal, in the room; Infinite.
Letâs start with a general thingy like we did with sonic, now, Iâm not gonna go over his actions in game, they speak for themselves, I will, however, be talking about the implications of his actions; his morals, his values, all of that
First off letâs collectively discuss and by discuss I mean go âwhat the actual fuck is wrong with this dudeâ
Itâs very clear that heâs just not a âgoodâ person, he does morally frowned upon things like being a mercenary, of course, thatâs one of the big ones, but the one that really fucks with me and makes me really wanna pick his brain is that despite Shadow being the one who hurt him, he immediately clicks to Sonic and the best way I can describe it is him going âi NEED to beat the ever loving shit out of that kid right now.â
Like, even during Episode Shadow, he still mentions Sonic with this personal malice that you donât expect, stating that Sonic wonât be able to stop him, and itâs honestly just kind of weird tbh???Â
So he hates Sonic from the start, he gangs up on him, beats him to the point of unconsciousness, kidnaps him, is indirectly (at least) the cause of 6 months of torture, beats him again, tells him heâs not even worth killing, tries to kill him and the entire resistance by throwing the sun at them and then tries to kill him personally before Sonic can finally get the revenge he wanted.
So Iâm sensing a lot of initially one-sided hostility between him and Sonic.
Another point is that his theme seems to be directed towards Sonic, it is mocking him, trying to tear down everything he establishes in Fistbump, stating that friendship will get you nowhere when you rely on it too much, asking who is going to save Sonic from Infinite when he is alone?
This is once again shown with how he interacts with Sonic, using Silver and Infiniteâs little tussle as a comparison, yeah, Infinite throws an insult, but itâs as a collective, he says heâs happy to crush a hero to keep the ârabbleâ (the resistance) in line, but when Sonic appears it becomes very personal
Heâs immediately on him, stating that Sonic is âback from the deadâ, calling him the âlittle blue saviorâ and insisting he can smell Sonicâs fear, glad heâs left an impression, noting that Sonic is âstill thrashing aroundâ, in his own words.
He speaks to Sonic so personally, hell, he waits for Sonic to quit talking before tossing Sonic to another part of the jungle to fight him alone. He very well could have gotten rid of Silver and then dealt with Sonic, but he instead decides dealing with Sonic immediately is more important than Silver is. He even says that he will meet Sonic again after that fight.
he also threatens to smash Sonic into blue jelly. I just wanted to mention that because itâs funny that he specifically said he would smash him into BLUE JELLY
So it makes me wonder, what is this dude's issue??? Why is he so obsessed with Sonic? And then it kind of hit me. Sonic is the antithesis of everything he values and believes in, of course heâd be intrigued.
Or, alternatively, heâs intrigued because Sonic is just like him.
Yep, Itâs the moment weâve (me) all been waiting for! Weâre finally discussing the âtwo sides of the same coinâ point!
Sonic and Infinite are exact opposites but they are also the exact same! They both so desperately need support and companionship (Iâve covered Sonicâs need, but we can see how Infinite needs support and companionship with how he handles the loss of his squad), they both have the same kind of goal (change the world to be a place they would want to live in, good or bad), theyâre both associated with the same people (Shadow and Robotnik)!
They are the exact same but they are exact opposites! They are each otherâs foils but they complement each other so well, they are two sides of the same tarnished, damaged coin!
I LOVE SONIC FORCES SO MUCH WHY AM I LIKE THIS
Sonic and Infinite are what they could have been based on how they responded to their own struggles. Infinite could have very well been just like Sonic, dedicated to helping people because of what happened at Mystic Jungle, and Sonic could have very well been just like Infinite, lashing out and hurting everyone in his way because of any of the copious losses heâs been forced to deal with.
But they donât, they become the person they are because of how they respond to their own struggles, trauma, losses and wins. And thatâs the beauty of their characters.Â
Sonic and Infinite are foils to each other, itâs a point you canât argue, but the reason they are foils to each other is because they are the same in some weird, messed up way.
But I wanted to add one more thing before I finish this off.
Infinite very well left an Impression on Sonic. Like it or not, somehow, someway, Infiniteâs concepts and ideals imprinted on Sonic and it made him and his own problems worse. So much worse.
I wonât go into too much about that because that links to other things outside of solely Forces, so yeah, tangent done. Thank you for listening
#infinite the jackal#sonic forces#sonic the hedgehog#sth#sonic#infinite#long post#what else should I tag#Sorry if you didnât want to be @âd I just love shouting out people because they are cool#*slaps roof of jackal and hedgehog* these bad boys can hold so much trauma and also rage apparently#*also slaps roof of shadow. ALSO I'M SO GLAD SOMEONE IS AS OBSESSED WITH TAIJU'S NOSE AS I AM this man is so perfectly designed like wakui had rent to pay and mouths to feed when he came up with him!!! actual masterpiece thank you wakui sensei for the feast đđ€đđ€đŠ
I love many many traits of him but I'm sure his nose is in the top 3. I just find his features so unique and aesthetically pleasing, I think I actually get high each time I draw him. Nose for side view, eyes for front view!
And we have so many side profile shots of him in the manga, bet Wakui-sensei knew what he was doing and I couldn't be happier!!!
I have so many screenshots of him from side view but I bet I don't have them all... was busy with other stuff during the last arc I guess.
And then Lindenfilms dropped this shot. Never, in my entire life, have I seen anything as beautiful as these angles and shapes. I have been studying art for most of my lifetime and there are a few things that just affect me so much I get in a blissful-meditative state whenever I look at them. Not in a simping but in a spiritual way, haha. I believe there is some math behind it. This seems to me like a universal truth to me. The key to understanding the infinite nature of outer space.
The other thing that affects me this way is a bike Honda recently released, the Rebel 1100. (Minus the exhaust pipe. We don't talk about the exhaust pipe.) Look at the curves. The angles. It's not the meanest, the fastest, nor the strongest. But no other bike has these proportions.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Do you know about formal logic? if so, do you know how defining a statement as a fixed point of a formula can make sense?
I do, but I haven't studied modal logic at all. I think that maybe @loving-n0t-heyting would be able to help you? Not sure though.
Anyway, just from the excerpt you sent, what it basically seems to be saying is that a proposition P is common knowledge if P is true, and everybody knows P is true, and everybody knows that everybody knows P is true, and so on ad infinitum. But this definition contains an infinite conjunction (infinitely many ands), which logical systems typically do not allow, instead requiring that all statements must be finite in length. So this presents a problem for trying to definite "common knowledge" as above in formal logic.
The solution that they present is to define it as the fixed point of a particular logical expression. So, I don't recall exactly what background you have in math, but I assume you know about fixed points in general. A fixed point of a given function f is an element x such that f(x)=x. So, speaking a bit informally, a fixed point of the expression x^2 would be an element x such that x=x^2. In this case, the equation has a solution because the function x^2 does indeed have a fixed point, in fact it has of two them: 1 and 0.
Anyway, very often, we can convert an "infinite" statement into a finite one by talking about fixed points. The classic example is the infinite fraction 1+1/(1+1/(1+1/(1+1...))). Uh, hold on, it's better if I can get a picture:
How can we interpret this infinite fraction? Well, we can notice that, because it repeats infinitely, just the part in the denominator is equal to the entire fraction x itself! So we can re-write this equation as x=1+1/x, and now the statement is finite! In order to solve it we just need to find a fixed point of the function f(x)=1+1/x, which turns out to be the golden ratio.
Sorry if this is all too basic and it's all stuff you already knowâagain, I don't recall exactly what your math background is, and even if you know it already hopefully it will be interesting to somebody else.
Anyway, this is the strategy that is being attempted in the screenshot in order to define common knowledge in a finite way. They have this operator E, where EP means "everyone knows that P". And they want to define a common knowledge operator C, where CP means "P and EP and EEP and EEEP and EEEEP and...", but they can't because that's infinitely long. But notice that, much like in the golden ratio example, "EP and EEP and EEEP and EEEEP and..." is equivalent to "E(P and EP and EEP and EEEP and...)". And guess what: that part in the parentheses, "P and EP and EEP and EEEP and...", is just the whole of CP again! So we can re-write
CP = P and EP and EEP and EEEP and...
as
CP = P and E(CP)
and now that's a finite expression. And it defines C as a fixed point x of the expression "P and E(xP)".
As to how this definition is made, like, formally, I don't know. Maybe they're working in a logical system in which you can just axiomatically declare solutions to fixed-point equations to exist, so they're saying "it's an axiom that this expression has a fixed point C". I am really not sure. And if this is the question you were asking, sorry for all the fluff and then no actual answer. But hopefully someone else can help you out with this.

random ask: favourite shape?
-An sleep dancer
you made a mistake asking a maths student this /lh anyway youâre getting a top five :)
5. circle
đ¶ here is a circle, it knows how to get around, it has a radius from centre to rim. and the diameterâs a line that goes from side to side. while passing through the centre. now isnât that simple :D đ¶ <- literally the first thing i thought of reading this ask. circles are a pretty good shape, they have a catchy song as well, AND thereâs a fun debate to be had wrt to its sides. is it a one sided shape? does it have infinite sides? no one knows
4. square
overall a pretty solid shape!! iâm a little biased towards liking squares cause the polygon song makes me feel sorry for them. i cannot explain why it just makes me really emotional??
3. triangle
good shape. i like the variety with all the different types (isosceles supremacy btw). loses points due to the existence of trigonometry. to tie this back to vbs considering iâm a vbs account, akito canonically (as of letâs study hard) hates trigonometry. screenshot from lozy bugâs translation.
2. hexagon
itâs like six triangles all together. need i say more?
1. parallelogram
nothing bad to say about this shape itâs just a funky little guy. opposite sides are parallel and equal in length BUT unlike with squares or rectangles the angles arenât 90° and i personally think that makes them way cooler.
#not vbs#mod an speaks#asks!!#an sleep dancer anon#idk how i found this much to say about shapes i donât even LIKE maths#sorry for exposing my status as a complete loser on main /lh

I posted your ask before I could type it in đ So, sorry! Since I was working offline for a bit I had your screenshot luckily. I guess spirit knew I'd mess up đ
Helloo fren. You're very welcome đ Thank you for the song! Very unique MV. Also, for the reading, I needed the question form of it so I framed it myself. Here's the reading ~~~
đ» What do I need to focus on to improve myself đ»
Ace of Pentacles (clarifier 4 of Wands), 9 of Swords (clarifier VIII The Strength) + (bottom card) XVII The Star
The imagery of the stars and galaxy is prominent which reminds me of your Starseed query last time. A clashing imagery of earth and the galaxy. A focus on not only improving practical requirements but also beyond the material world. It could also mean that getting in touch with yourself on the physical plane can help you be connected with everything else. I'm getting the suggestion of following a wellness routine. Breaking down big goals into smaller milestons, if youre interested in learning a language, writing a book or advancing in studies. You need to create a focused environment for your learning. Another suggestion is a mental health routine - journalling. It doesn't have to be an obligation, but turn to it for really short, one line entries. Anyother practices that helps ease your anxieties is more than welcome. Any long-term vision (The Star), starts with small efforts. If you're someone into futuristic thinking, work on that. It could yield a lot of results. Wherever you have Aquarius and it's (modern) ruler Uranus could give you hints about what you can nurture. Stories and myths have power, so if you are inclined towards these, through creation or as an audience, find opportunities around that. But remember to start small and be focused.
đź From the Oracle of the Hidden Worlds
đ§ââïž The Hidden Worlds đ§ââïž
When i move into the worlds beyond my senses, i can truly begin to know the infinite possibilities of what we call reality. I expand my consciousness, and the hidden worlds within me and around me will open up, and i will be a part of the reawakening of the planet.
Okay, the last line pretty much sums up my reading. âš reawakening of the planet is your takeaway đŠ love it when spirit makes references to itself. Hope it resonated!!!đ

Okay hold up this is. I think some context is needed here.
1. I explicitly mentioned translational censorship of the Talmud. There was no "need I remind...?" I literally up front addressed that. That issue was part of why I explained the value of having the Talmud freely online meant antisemitic false quotations can be easily debunked as fake. It's not a perfect solution and the problem shouldn't exist, but that is part of the thinking, yes. Having it free online means you can quickly debunk bullshit.
[ slight edit here bc this is what I was remembering in reference to this:
The two childhood friends had lost touch for many years, but reconnected over a âshared frustrationâ that the Talmud and other important Jewish texts were not accessible online.
âAt that point, if you were to google the English Talmud, you would find pdfs from the Soncino edition published in England, you would get an anti-Semitic website and you would get a partial 1918 translation,â Foer told the Forward. âThat by itself was kind off pathetic.â
You Can Now Read the Whole Talmud Online for Free, Forward. 2017. This mention of half the search results being antisemitic garbage is repeated in a lot of stories about Sefaria's founding and public donation of the Talmud in translation.
Oh and I was also recalling this Tablet article about it which quotes Einstein. He doesn't say "make it palatable," he says make it accessible to fight lies, basically.]
2. Wait wait wait. Do....you think Sefaria is made by Christians?????
This Sefaria?? https://www.sefaria.org/texts
I'm so deeply deeply confused where you got this idea that I was referencing any kind of Christian website when I explicitly named Sefaria. There are multiple Jewish websites which contain the Talmud text online, Sefaria is just the biggest, best, and most comprehensive Jewish virtual library with the most robust platform for educators.
I was a beta tester for Sefaria's app. Nothing about that website is Christian. Sefaria is the same website op screenshot to illustrate what they meant.
Their about page includes statements such as:
Sefaria is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building the future of Jewish learning in an open and participatory way.
And:
For the Jewish people, our texts are our collective inheritance. They belong to everyone and we want them to be available to everyone, in the public domain or with free public licenses. Whether itâs copying a page of text for your classroom or downloading our entire database for research and new projects, youâll enjoy unfettered access to the canon.
The original founders are Joshua Foer, and Brett Lockspeiser, both of whom are Jewish. Lockspeiser was one of Forward's top 50 most influential American Jews.
Sefaria exists precisely because as you said, Jews value education.
"Ideally it would have been shared with you."
Okay but: My rabbis use Sefaria and pass out Sefaria sheets. So the odds are high this would've still been the method I was told in? And maybe I was told and forgot. Yes, we have a copy of the Talmud in the library at shul, but Sefaria is infinitely more portable and easier to cross reference.
Lots of people can save hundreds or thousands of dollars to invest in a personal and complete Jewish library including the Shulchan Arukh and Talmud for home study, but I am not one of them. Instead I use the $0 Jewish virtual library that everyone from academics to Jewish educators to rabbis to idk...Jewish camps â uses.
Also i really love how antisemites are like "the talmud is a secret text the jews hide from us that teaches them how to cheat christians" when the talmud is freely publicly accessible in its entirety and is like "does it count as something going from the private to the public domain if you throw it from your window into somebody else's window and it never touches the ground" and "Rabbi Yochanan said that Rabbi Yishmael, son of Rabbi Yosei, had a massive cock. The size of Rabbi Yochanan's cock was smaller than Rabbi Yishmael's, but the exact size is up for debate. Both sides agree that it was pretty huge, too, though."

213341 Art Studio IIIA â Interim - A Mad Dash
Beyond our Instagram group chat; a huge chunk of group organization takes place in our dedicated "Planning Slides" document.
Olivia had taken the reins with getting our progress and ideas jotted down; which has really helped keep us all on pace.
Alongside a timetable, these slides act as one big checklist - with sections for planning materials, room painting, and a moodboard.
We all invited friends and family to the exhibition, with an estimated 40 people checking it out at once - to which we've been informed could be on the unsafe side, as 2E Dark is not the most crowd friendly.
The room is also a little inconspicuous. Sandwiched between two studio spaces, we should aim to draw people in with wall text. There's also talks to remove the door in favor of a curtain.
On the first Tuesday of the study break, (almost) all of us met for a discussion. Written atop this note page is the 'pipeline' for getting our space primed and ready for presenting.
Two days later, we met up with Mike Bridgeman to lock in our equipment requests.
There were bundles of extension cords, a projector and three spotlights already in our space, so a lot of the borrowing would be on my end.
This was a little humbling. Turns out - I don't know much about mixing. There was an expectation that I would be practicing mixing in my own time - or in the very least learning more about it, and I watched Mike's smile quickly fade as he had to explain that there are different inputs for mono and stereo sound, and different audio jacks, too! If I wanted to play music from four different MP3 players, I'd need a very large, expensive mixer for the task! And amps are a thing that exist too! Jesus Christ.
It needed some more thought; and I have a lot to learn. From this, I started re-drafting my presentation. I was not letting go of my driving concept, but how could I adapt it?
I came up with an alternative, and emailed Mike.
Back at home, I started toying around with SM64 loops in Audacity, with the idea that I could load them onto my SP-202, and divvy the mono tracks up from there.
It's a unique challenge - create four 'songs' that can play over each other at different timing, all in the same key and timbral range.
I amassed seven loops in Audacity, and arranged them in a song format for your enjoyment.
While some of the more 'textural' sounds that came from this are worth looking at further, such things as drum beats and chord progressions quickly become a slippery slope.
The same problem forms as did back with my presentation back in Week 6 - where the processing is too clean, and the action of sampling is lost on the listener.
Instead, the loops have to be rougher. Simpler. More jarring. The SP-202 was going to be used regardless, but instead of Audacity being the middleman, the SP-202 is where the bulk of the composition takes place, and I'll load sounds right into it.
This was also the time that my group began drawing up our pamphlet. I let my creative desires get the better of me and largely left myself with designing the whole thing - however I did consult the group every step of the way, sending screenshots and drawn-ideas:
As a successor to our proposal document, I made sure to format the pages in Word, as this meant the formatting could actually transfer all the symbols over to a PDF. Microsoft Word also comes with some ancient, deep-down features that can still be used: like this palm tree border which really ups the tackiness factor.
The cat you see was picked by Ruby and I, when we were Googling 2004-2010-era cat images. This one is from 2010, and immediately struck us as representative of our shared concept.
To match the font-graphics theme, I gave the image similar treatment - using point-and-click-paths to give this clean look without any line wobbliness. I also turned the whole thing into a vector, allowing it to be infinitely scaled, like a font!
And I wonder why I'm sleep deprived.
I was battling a bit of music block at this point, but Em was a great motivator for getting my sampler back out and jumping back into it.
The workflow was straightforward. No pre-preparing samples in Audacity, just recording them straight in and going from there. Old school.
Samples used:
Koji Kondo - Lethal Lava Land
Koji Kondo - Inside The Castle Walls
Koji Kondo - File Select
Recording back into audacity, I would then trim-up the tracks, loop preferred sections, and bring up the volume. No further polish from there, this was time for the SP-202 to shine.
Listening back on Time Isn't Real Strategy, copying the mono tracks into each ear and pacing them slightly didn't cut it, and the resulting sound was hollow. With the mono inputs of the mixer in mind, it was best to let that mono goodness shine.
Mike got back in touch, and the ball was rolling once more. This time, he'd acquired four MP3 players, along with a mixer, which for the meantime, was still sitting in the Block 6 recording studio.
This meetup was a godsend. My two-MP3-player-audio-split idea could work, sure, but with the power of a stereo-to-mono jack converter, using four MP3 players was possible again.
We tested on the mixer, and I got a crash course for how I'd be wiring up my project in practice. I needed four 3.5-to-3.5mm (stereo) cables, two of which he could provide. An equal amount of 3.5mm-to-6.5mm (mono) jack converters were also needed, of which I'd also need to buy another two.
Hooking one MP3 player up with this 3.5-6.5mm, stereo-to-mono array, we tested the mixer audio - which was great! The cables, jacks and all four MP3 players were provided in a Tupperware container, and I head off to Jaycar to get the rest of my equipment.
Back with the team, I locked my attention into getting the pamphlet done, first and foremost. Olivia and the others went into our newly assigned space for some mapping, as we needed a top-down view. These were their notes, along with some format planning for our pamphlet.
By this point, the first page of the pamphlet had shaped out nicely, with all subsequent pages following suit.
Following another pamphlet-making session on Word, I got back around to my sampler, and loaded up all eight pads with enough material for three whole tracks.
Samples used:
Koji Kondo - Game Start
Koji Kondo - Peach's Message
Koji Kondo - Powerful Mario
Samples used:
Koji Kondo - Dire, Dire Docks
In-Game Ambience, "Outside Peach's Castle"
Samples used:
Koji Kondo - Cave Dungeon
Koji Kondo - Inside The Castle Walls
The text on the front of our pamphlet was tricky, as we all had a fair bit in common, but enough differences that making one big mission statement would not be easy. Olivia shared around a word document with the first draft I made, and we each had a hand in editing in/out parts that best represented our works, to which I made the final edit, which the others greenlit.
We went with the following:
"OH HI â we come from internet.âŻItâs been around for about two decades longer than we have. In that time, it has expanded exponentially alongside the development of the devices we now glue our minds and fingertips to. We frolicked freely in these pixelated fields, while the world played catch up. Where did those good times go? It was all so fun, but how much of it was real? At best, it was a lens. At worst, a mirror. "We didnât feel alone, but nobody else was in the room with us. It wasnât an exclusive experience, our consciousness was part of a collective, our realities fractured and sewn back together. The emotions of self and stranger were intertwined and projected back out; and as we retrospect, simulated familiarities pull us back into the maelstrom of bygone emotions, a haze of âbetter daysâ to feed into our past, present, and future. How do we get back there? "The digital age is a perpetual melancholy, the past unobtainable â but that is all the motivation we need to chase it endlessly. Each of our artworks follow memories and experiences in these real and virtual spaces; familiar motifs spoon-fed into our young minds, and the lives that are both fictional and our own. "From thereon, we are what we eat. "This is Personal Storage."
Stevee-Renee's portraits came in, and we each got to submitting our individual work profiles for adding into the pamphlet, to which I formatted like so:
I then got back into Audacity for the rest of the tracks...
âŠpushing through a couple late nights...
âŠuntil everything sounded just right!
