Hey this came up in my therapy group last night and it was a good reminder for me and I thought I'd share it with all my fellow chronic overthinkers and nervous systems <3
One of the most important pieces of advice I've ever received is to take people's words at face value. This ultimately means choosing to believe that people (generally) mean what they say, and doing your best not to "read between the lines" and let your anxieties and insecurities form unproven assumptions about someone's intentions.
It can be an extremely difficult skill to practice. It's taken me a literal decade to adhere to it and I'm still not perfect. But I promise you it's worth it. Setting your mind free of constant suspicions and expecting the worst from people is not naive, it's self-preservation. It can do wonders for your mental well-being.
And no, it doesn't mean you never listen to your intuition, or just blindly assume everyone everywhere is always telling you the truth and has only pristine outward intentions. It simply means that we can't truly get "bad vibes" from a text message, your close friends are almost 100% guaranteed to NOT be lying about wanting to hang out with you, a stranger giving you a compliment is probably not making a joke about you later, etc.
We make so many small judgments and assumptions about the people we interact with every day, and I'm begging you to just once, try to practice saying in your head, "that compliment was nice, I'm going to assume it's genuine." Or "my loved one has never told me they hate me or that I'm too much, so I will operate under the idea that they do actually like and love me." It doesn't even have to be that scripted or complicated. You get the gist, right?
Please choose to be kind to yourselves. Please choose not to sabotage your relationships and connections because your anxiety makes evil, angry lies about you and everyone around you.
You are loved, liked, valued, and worthy. I wish you the best in choosing self-love 💜
#idek how to tag this or anything i just wanted to get it out#it's so important to me that people understand this and i really think we would all be happier and healthier#if we could truly just. literally mind our own business. not make assumptions.#it can go in so many different directions. it doesn't just apply to anxiety#don't assume that asshole in traffic was intentionally being an asshole#maybe they got distracted. maybe something is wrong#like it applies to so many things guys#please give more people the benefit of the doubt. it will save your life#mental health#bpd

reading some of the book v audiobook discourse, and i’ll say this: come for the audiobook listeners if you want (i do both, idc) but i’ll die on the hill that listening to another person read is closer to actively engaging with literature than whatever those “””speed readers””” are up to
#they literally just like saying they’ve read a lot. you’re not critically interpreting anything at a sustained 800wpm or whatever#personally if i listen to an audiobook i’m pausing and rewinding so much bc i want to actually internalize the info#instead of letting it passively wash over me#i think a lot of this discourse comes with both negative presumptions about the listener and overly generous ones for the reader#not all readers are created equal either#i think engaging with literature—especially more challenging works—is the most important part and is possible with audiobooks#the cognitive/health benefits of specifically sitting in silence and fully devoting your brainpower to reading#are worth considering—especially in this low attention span world we live in.#but i think it would be naive to say#most people arguing strongly against audiobooks give a sincere fuck about the cognitive wellbeing of people who struggle to sit and read.#and i know it’s embarassing when people pathologize their lack of desire to challenge themselves#but i think it’s just as pathetic to self-soothe by developing a superiority complex over something so stupid#also you’ll notice i didn’t even touch the topic of disability#and that’s because we’re all on tumblr and it’s literally the most well-covered aspect of this discourse and i have nothing to add#you know and i know

How is your new job going so far?
Thanks for asking!! I'm doing okay, but it's kind of overwhelming. Not just because it's a new job, but because a lot of the processes are super convoluted (basically, people kept slapping on bandaids instead of actually trying to rebuild the systems to be more streamlined and coherent). It's also kinda hard because I only have 3 coworkers in this department (1 of which is very recent as well), so there aren't a ton of guides on how to do things bc it just wasn't needed until recently.
Despite feeling overwhelmed a lot of the time, I will say that my coworkers have been really great about emphasizing that we'll be taking things slowly. More of it is starting to make sense and it helps knowing that they don't expect me to know and do everything right off the bat. They're very willing to let me work and learn at my own pace.
#I will also say that the benefits aren't as great as I thought they were initially but it's pretty similar to my old job#so it's not like it's new to me#really my only big issue is the shitty PTO accrual system where we can't borrow time in advance#the healthcare plans seem pretty good which is VERY important to me as a person with disabilities and health issues#personal

I swear the mere act of buying cigarettes fixes things sometimes.
Which is not a good thought to have because I'm supposed to be quitting, and how do I not smoke if I have cigarettes, but this time around I was completely miserable about pretty much everything work-related. Like keeping myself from crying by the sheer force of will. And then I bought the pack, and within two hours at least 4 of my worries were alleviated, and it had nothing to do with the hit of nicotine. Things like, my supervisor talking to me like I matter. Things like, a colleague apologizing for things that went south the other day. Things that have nothing to do with me smoking or not.
Would things have turned around if I hadn't bought the pack? Probably yes, I should say, being a bit of an atheist. But apparently not enough of an atheist not to attach superstition to the whole thing.
#so how tf am i to quit smoking when i also get like this?#how tf am i supposed to unlearn using cigarettes as a coping mechanism#i know the health benefits of not smoking bc i always feel them when i quit#not to mention the long-term benefits of not smoking that can't really be felt but are actually important#i know all that#and yet#where's the reward )-:#and how do i detach all this extra shit i've piled on the stupid cancer sticks that don't even taste nice#maybe one day i'll be able to look back on this and somehow make use of it#ramblings

How Reading & Writing helps Mental Health | Solh Wellness
Reading and writing have been shown to provide numerous mental health benefits, such as stress reduction and improved cognitive function. These activities can assist individuals in processing their emotions, expressing themselves, and gaining new perspectives. In this blog, we'll look at how reading and writing can help with mental health.
What Is the Impact of Reading on Mental Health?
Reading has been shown to relax the brain and reduce stress and anxiety levels. Reading, according to University of Sussex research, can reduce stress by up to 68%. This is due to the fact that reading allows people to escape their current reality and immerse themselves in another world, providing a much-needed break from daily stressors.
Reading can also assist in the development of empathy and understanding for others. Reading about other people's experiences can help readers understand different points of view and improve their communication and social skills. It has been demonstrated that reading improves cognitive function and memory. Readers exercise their brains and improve their ability to retain information by engaging with complex texts. This week's Solh Talks guest, Mrs. Deepa Agarwal, discussed how reading can help people overcome mental disorders. It's time to watch the episode!
How to Make Reading a Part of Your Mental Health Routine
Many people require assistance in developing and sticking to a reading routine. The key to incorporating reading into a mental health routine is to start small. A healthy routine can be established by reading ten pages of a self-help book before going to bed or waking up. Reading can be very beneficial to someone who is suffering from a mental illness.
What Is the Impact of Writing on Mental Health?
There are numerous mental health benefits to writing. Individuals can express their emotions through expressive writing, which helps them understand their feelings and develop coping mechanisms. Journaling, in particular, can be an extremely effective tool for self-reflection and personal development.
The Advantages of Journal Writing
Writing in a journal has several advantages, including increased self-esteem and confidence. Individuals who write down their thoughts and feelings can gain a sense of accomplishment and ownership over their ideas, which can be especially helpful for those who have low self-esteem or self-doubt. Writing can be a therapeutic form of creative expression. Individuals can use creative or expressive writing to explore their imaginations and develop their distinct voices. This can be a very effective tool for personal growth and development. The advantages of keeping a journal can help a person overcome depression.

Hey, so I was not expecting this to get as popular as it is and I was very much not expecting the number of people who are now concerned because they like Earl Grey, so I wanted to clarify a few things
"Earl Grey will poison you" factoid actually just statistical error. Millions of people drink Earl Grey all the time and are fine. Earl Grey Georg, who drinks sixteen cups of it a day and nothing else, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
In case you have trouble picturing just how much tea this guy was drinking, here's a handy infographic made in MS Paint on the advice and with the feedback of @strictlyquadrilateral
ALT
More seriously, I'm not a doctor, much less your doctor! If you have symptoms and you want to cut out Earl Grey just to see if it helps go ahead, and I'm glad I could help! If you don't have symptoms and you drink less than 16 mugs a day of Earl Grey you're probably fine. This man was drinking a gallon of it and nothing else; case studies aren't solid proof of anything they're mostly just Hey This Weird Thing Happened. Almost anything can make you sick if you drink or eat enough of it, just do everything in moderation. In fact, some studies indicate that both bergamot and black tea may have health benefits, like these ones I found on a quick search: x x x (you can find a lot more on black tea specifically).
Re: blorbo from my research, here is my favorite ever case study. I'm obsessed with it.
Summary:
- Guy presents to neurology with muscle issues, very clearly has something going on but diagnostic tests are inconclusive
- History is mostly unremarkable. Key word, mostly. He drinks four liters of plain Earl Grey tea per day. For context this is nearly twice the recommended daily fluid intake. All fluids, to be clear, not just tea. He only drinks tea tho
- Bergamot is known to be phototoxic in high doses (reacts badly on your skin with sunlight)
- APPARENTLY nobody previously has consumed enough of it for it to be widely known that it is also, apparently, mildly toxic to ingest in high doses
- Guy starts drinking plain black tea again. Only 2 liters this time (he didn't have a medical reason to drink that much tea, he just liked it) and so now he's fully recovered
#replies#it told me to make an infographic and then#i spent an hour on google and pubmed getting increasingly peeved#that none of these 'health websites' adequately cite their sources#'three cups of earl grey has health benefits' okay i wouldnt be surprised#but all this study says is that 150 ml of bergamot extract has health benefits#where are you getting the three cups from. tell me#anyway thats not important#the important thing is that this guy is a very specific case

Get Hydrated!
The Importance of Hydration Just Press PLAY! Good hydration is essential to our overall health, but many people find maintaining fluid intake challenging. I’ve never had this problem because I am very much a creature of habit. Two things that I do to ensure that I am sufficiently hydrated: 1: I have set times when I drink water. When I wake up, while waiting for the kettle to boil, I have my…

I was looking for a professional development course to start working on today and signed up for one called “Comprehensive Mental Health for Teachers” thinking it was a PD on taking care of your mental health as an educator… it’s about the kids. And taking care of their mental health. Which is important! But. Not what I was looking for lol
#could’ve been called something like ‘comprehensive ways of supporting student mental health’ idk#would’ve been clearer#maybe I’m just dumb lol but like. it said mental health for TEACHERS#actually yeah I am dumb why would I think the state would waste money developing a course to help teachers take care of themselves lmao#we’re just machines built for the betterment of children right???#again- yes this is an important topic and frankly I probably would’ve picked this course anyways!#but like. egg on my face for thinking I’d get to learn something for my own benefit lol

I'm currently off work for surgery. I'm on week 3 of being home. This is the longest I've been off work in almost ten years.
And you know what? I'm sewing again. im baking again. Im singing and playing piano again. Im playing online games and painting and doing everything I've been too exhausted to do. I'm ahead on my reading for the fall semester, since I know once work + school starts up again ill be back to being too stressed and exhausted to remember anything I read. I've opened a high-yield savings account. My house is clean, for once, which is a hell of an accomplishment considering I had ankle surgery less than a month ago and still can't walk properly.
If I had 3 months or 6 months off, imagine what I could do. If I had the financial stability to take a year off, I might actually finish the novel I've been writing for the last 5 years.
Turns out, having the mental and emotional space to rest really does help your mental health and motivation. I knew that intellectually, but experiencing it is...breathtaking.
i can't get over how evil it is that "gap in your resume" is considered a valid reason to not hire someone like "hmmm sorry you weren't working constantly every day of your life we need people who do nothing but work until they drop dead for us we just don't think you're right for the job" fuck youuuu
#rest is important#I can rent about part-time jobs and benefits#and about how without short-term disability and good health insurance id be completely fucked#But thats another post

USA please listen to me: the price of “teaching them a lesson” is too high. take it from New Zealand, who voted our Labour government out in the last election because they weren’t doing exactly what we wanted and got facism instead.
Trans rights are being attacked, public transport has been defunded, tax cuts issued for the wealthy, they've mass-defunded public services, cut and attacked the disability funding model, cut benefits, diverted transport funding to roads, cut all recent public transport subsidies, cancelled massive important infrastructure projects like damns and ferries (we are three ISLANDS), fast tracked mining, oil, and other massive environmentally detrimental projects and gave the power the to approve these projects singularly to three ministers who have been wined and dined by lobbyists of the companies that have put the bids in to approve them while one of the main minister infers he will not prioritise the protection of endangered species like the archeys frog over mining projects that do massive environmental harm. They have attacked indigenous rights in an attempt to negate the Treaty of Waitangi by “redefining it”; as a backup, they are also trying to remove all mentions of the treaty from legislation starting with our Child Protection laws no longer requiring social workers to consider the importance of Maori children’s culture when placing those children; when the Waitangi Tribunal who oversees indigenous matters sought to enquire about this, the Minister for Children blocked their enquiry in a breach of comity that was condemned in a ruling — too late to do anything — by our Supreme Court. They have repealed labour protections around pay and 90 day trials, reversed our smoking ban, cancelled our EV subsidy, cancelled our water infrastructure scheme that would have given Maori iwi a say in water asset management, cancelled our biggest city’s fuel tax, made our treasury and inland revenue departments less accountable, dispensed of our Productivity Commission, begun work on charter schools and military boot camps in an obvious push towards privatisation, cancelled grants for first home buyers, reduced access to emergency housing, allowed no cause evictions, cancelled our Maori health system that would have given Maori control over their own public medical care and funding, cut funding of services like budgeting advice and food banks, cancelled the consumer advocacy council, cancelled our medicine regulations, repealed free prescriptions, deferred multiple hospital builds, failed to deliver on pre-election medical promises, reversed a gun ban created in response to the mosque shootings, brought back three strikes = life sentence policy, increased minimum wage by half the recommended amount, cancelled fair pay for disabled workers, reduced wheelchair services, reversed our oil and gas exploration ban, cancelled our climate emergency fund, cut science research funding including climate research, removed limits on killing sea lions, cut funding for the climate change commission, weakened our methane targets, cancelled Significant National Areas protections, have begun reversing our ban on live exports. Much of this was passed under urgency.
It’s been six months.
