A professional-looking professional antigen-presenting cell!
What are dendritic cells?
Dendritic cells are immune cells which display antigens on their surface to present these antigens to T cells. They do this through engulfing something such as a bacterium and breaking it down into lots of small parts. Then peptides (short proteins) are presented in specialised molecules on the surface of the dendritic cell.
Why are dendritic cells ‘professional’ antigen-presenting cells?
Almost all of our cells are able to present antigens, through displaying peptides from the proteins the cell is producing on the surface of the cell in specialised molecules. This allows the immune system to ‘look inside’ the cell to see whether it is producing any abnormal proteins - these may be due to mutated DNA or a viral infection. Professional antigen-presenting cells use slightly different molecules to present antigens and also provide an additional activating signal to T cells.

#shitpost#immunology#immunology shitposting#meme#mhc#b cell receptor#bcr crosslinking#this meme brought to you by my mom and I making fun of a question on a quiz I had for literature class#where one of the questions was ‘which of these is NOT a feature of the Greek underworld#and I guess the professor just picked a random Greek sounding word but the specific word they picked was leukocyte#so we were pretending that leukocytes were in different literary traditions#and that morphed into talking about ‘immuno-christian values’ and I got inspired to throw this nonsense together

sending a bunch for the emoji ask meme! ✨ 💖 🧐 🦅 🤗
Thank you!
✨ Give you and your writing a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it. 😉
Awww. I really just like my own writing. I read my own work all the time. I write exactly what I want to read, so I read it. And it makes me very happy.
💖 What made you start writing?
I've told stories my entire life. I don't remember a time when I didn't tell stories. My first fanfic was an illustrated tale of the Black Stallion going to space. I was the weird kid always wandering around in a daydream, forgetting there was a real world outside the ones I made in my head. My mom got me a t-shirt once that said, "I'm in my own little world, but don't worry, they know me here."
🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?
I am currently giving myself a crash course on blood chemistry and immunology to write an upcoming scene, so yes. Bonus! I am learning cool shit about horseshoe crabs.
If I can pull it off, it's gonna be so fucking cool.
🦅 Do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants?
A little of column A, a lot of column B. I usually put down some guide rails so I have things to aim for, but a lot of the journey to get there is a delightful surprise.
My outlines can get more detailed than this, but not usually:
The outline changes all the time as I discover the story. Mezzo has already gone in several directions I did not anticipate, and it's awesome.
🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?
Jump in. Feet first. Just do it, keep doing it, and don't let anyone rain on your parade. Love it and have fun with it. The only person you need to please is you.
I was a terrible writer when I started out. I wrote the cringiest, most eye rolling fic you can imagine. But I loved doing it, and I was lucky to get a mentor who understood that feeding my enthusiasm was a lot more important than setting a bar I had to reach. He coached me to seek out my own bar and leap over it.

Currently watching: nothing 😭 least thing i watched was across the spider/verse
Currently reading: also nothing unless you count my immunology lecture 💀
Currently obsessed with

[ It's 1 am, so I'll try to go back to sleep. I don't think I need to do much in the office today. My goal is to work on more asks including the science report meme. I'm debating on how to approach them since I worked in research and healthcare. I may do them depending on the other muse's verse instead of a general approach like as a full-fledged research report with your muse as a case study. I could do that if it's requested, but those would include things like a literature review and I wasn't sure if people wanted to read over a few pages. I also will have to switch between AMA or APA citation styles depending on the other muse and topics related to them. These also take more time depending on how I approach the full reports or case studies.
I am a researcher, but I'm an epidemiologist and PhD student in Indigenous health. I did some work in medical research (focus in infectious diseases, biosecurity, and immunology), genetic research, and also when I was a student at a med lab tech program and a nurse aide at a rehab facility (but these were from a long, long time ago). I haven't done much in psychiatry or nursing. I know a little, but I want to be careful. I worry I may not do them justice as full research reports.
I may write up lab reports or observation notes as npcs. I might write some as a research or lab journal too. Those can be lengthy too, but would not be as in-depth like papers or case studies with lit reviews for context and background. If you prefer a lit review on a paper based on your muse, please let me know via ask or im. Otherwise, I'll do a more brief ic approach as npcs as lab reports, journals, or observation notes from therapies or experiments. ]
[I might have fallen asleep after I got home from work…]
#ooc#mainly rambling about the science report meme and how I'm going to handle them#I can do full reports#but they take time since it requires searching for bg info and topics to apply to your muse as a case study#and there would have to be citations

In my biology textbook there are sidebars with case studies, additional information and some fairly standard stock images. However, sometimes there’s hilarious annotations and very strange images. The following images are from the chapter on immunity and disease :
[Image ID: A monochromatic photograph of Jon Snow, who founded modern disease containment in the 1854 cholera outbreak in London. There is a caption that reads “Find yourself a man who can cook, clean, and invent a whole new field of medicine.”]

Due to having some social contact outside work and school settings, my schedule has fallen apart and I don't know how I'll do
#another test coming up#have went through 37 slides out of 102#i can remember TCR structure#and the number of CDR on each chain but idk what cdr meant. complementarity determining region? god knows#the structure of CD4 and CD8 is 😭😭😭 like bestieesss why must i suffer#but i recall CD4 and CD8 binding sites on MHC#forgot what CD stands for#i know the difference between coreceptor and costimulating receptor. if thats what theyre called#so now i have to learn BCR (i know already smth) and CDR of them and then there was something.#was it the gene regions? it probably was. idk. something that is analogous for both TCR and BCR#anyway. i know i make no sense but this was a good review session for me#i cant even make a meme out of this#oh wait i have to know immunological synapse. i made a meme abt that before#yeah thats in the other bigger part of the presentation i havent covered#i have a day lol.#oof#if you read my tags. do you have immunology flashcards? do you want to share? do you love me?
