we've got a pinball cabinet at a local arcade that seems like an easy one to start off with. all the rules are super intuitive, there aren't too many complicated shots to worry about, and overall it seems like a good beginner's table. (smb mushroom world, for the record)

the reason we're sending an ask is mainly because of the flippers acting strange. sometimes when we try and make a shot near the edge of the flipper, it won't flip up all the way immediately and doesn't put much force into the ball. is this normal for pinball cabinets, or is this something we should bring up to arcade staff?

(btw they also have medieval madness so we've been playing that as well to help learn)

That’s definitely worth bringing up to the arcade staff. It sounds like the coil sleeve might need to be cleaned or replaced. The arcade should be able to handle it pretty easily, but it’s also fun to learn how things work, so….

Pinball flippers have solenoid coils that get activate when you hit the button.

That plastic sleeve in the middle of the solenoid is a coil sleeve. When the solenoid activates it becomes an electromagnet that pulls the flipper link through the center of the coil sleeve. This is what causes the flipper to actually flip up.

Over time these coil sleeves can get dirty. If the sleeve is too dirty then the flipper link can get stuck in the sleeve for a moment before slides all the way through the coil sleeve. This leads to a delay between when you hit the button and when the flipper actually flips. A dirty sleeve can also make the flipper weaker because the flipper link gets slowed down by the grime that has accumulated on the coil sleeve.

This is one of the most common flipper problems and it’s also extremely easy to fix. Coil sleeves usually cost 1 dollar or less and it takes a few seconds to swap them out.

There’s not enough people talking about how important Stephanie is to Damian’s growth pre-Flashpoint.

Damian is surrounded by people who were molded and shaped and torn down and broken to become the monoliths that they are, and then there’s this girl who seems so at peace with herself and is constantly making quips, and it’s so foreign to him.

And she tells him that she’s in his world because she believes people are worth fighting for.
