Another Masquerade, huh? Well, this time the nun made sure she wasn’t going to wear any masks, not go by any different aliases- just herself. As Aurelia Rivera. Nothing more, nothing less. Honestly, she just came here with a friend to help them conduct research over the potions and effects of turning a bunch of people into 16 year olds. Also, she heard that Ying may be at this thing too- and the woman worried about if the potions making the child older. Might as well keep an eye on her, don’t want no horny teenagers taking advantage of a child. Or there will be hell to pay.
“Down the hatch it goes.”
Upon taking the potion, Aurelia felt a rush of emotions she hadn’t had in ages. Her height was still the same, and her figure was smaller- more lean and lighter. The teen squinched her nose while she frowned at the image in the mirror. At least her outfit looked hella. As if she were ready to spray paint some walls and break in to some places to get some sweet, sweet, booze. Wait. That’s not responsible. Hopefully she’ll keep her wits about her. And no, she ain’t applying to be prom king or queen- that’s not her forte.

Summary: A parting from Lotus Pier and a therapeutic stay at the Cloud recesses.
As the morning sun rose steadily in the sky, the sound of cultivators waking from restless sleeps and the flurry of the previous evening filled the spacious halls of Lotus Pier. Disciples dressed in their robes and polished their blades while servants shuffled about the sect with crates of materials for the competition only hours away.
The gates to the pier were open as always; civilians also getting ready for the morning couldn’t help but peak inside the tall, polished wooden doors. The grounds of the sect were overloaded with disciples of some of the minor sects. Because of the events from yesterday, some had changed their minds about competing in the competition, feeling Lotus Pier was not a healthy environment for their juniors and opted to cut their losses and return home.
Most damning however, were the group of Lan sect members preparing to depart with Wei WuXian amongst them.
“Are you sure you want to ride on your sword back to the Cloud Recesses, Young Master Wei? One of us wouldn’t mind carrying you, “Lan XiChen stated while watching the young man unsheathe his sword
“No, no, I can fly just fine, no worries, “Wei WuXian replied, giving him a small smile in return
“We’re just worried about your wounds, “XiChen started but paused, walking over and placing a hand on the young man’s shoulder, “Don’t...be afraid to ask for help.”
Blinking in surprise, Wei WuXian could only nod slowly in acquiescence.
“The sooner we leave the better. We’ll have Lan Yu look over your wounds, “Lan Qiren spoke while fixing his qiankun bag over his shoulder
“So, you really are leaving, “Wei WuXian, hearing the familiar voice, turned to be faced with a glowering Jiang WanYin
The Jiang sect heir was covered in a cloak of envy and enmity, his eyes were alight, almost electrified with emotion. Dressed in rich robes befitting his station, the cast and sling around Jiang WanYin’s arm was as bright as a dead rat in a pile of jewels.
“Jiang Cheng, “Wei WuXian frowned
“Father told me I’d be head disciple until you decided to return, “Jiang WanYin sneered, “Guess I’m supposed to pick up your scraps from now on.”
“It’s only for a few months, Jiang Cheng, “Wei WuXian replied, “I’ll....I’ll be back before you know it.”
The sight of Jiang WanYin near Wei WuXian immediately put every cultivator on the grounds on alert; apprehension filled the air as they noticed that the young cultivator had once again acquired Zidian from his mother.
“I’m supposed to lead this competition now, “Jiang WanYin continued, “Though I suppose if you didn’t start whining about your wounds, you’d still do it before you left, huh? After all, it is your work father is showing off.”
Sighing, Wei WuXian sheathed his sword and walked a bit to Jiang WanYin, placing a hand on his shoulder, “You should be happy Uncle Jiang is giving you this opportunity. If he sees how capable you are, he might let you keep the title of head disciple by the time I get back.”
Slapping his hand away, Jiang WanYin growled, “What’s the use of being head disciple now! Now that everyone thinks your some amazing cultivator and I’m some useless twit. Everyone’s gonna think I’m only head disciple cause father’s pitying me, but I guess that’s what you want, isn’t it!?”
Face flushed red in anger, he truly was the spitting image of his mother. Breathing harshly and glaring down his shixiong, the sect heir twisted the ring on his finger, agitation in his eyes.
Bringing a couple a fingers to his head, Wei WuXian massaged his temples, “Jiang Cheng, just...*sigh* I...should go. I’ll see you in a few months.”
About to turn back to the Lans, Wei WuXian was caught in a harsh grip by his lapels.
“Leave? Leave so you can evade responsibility for the shit-show you created?!, “Jiang WanYin shouted at him
Grabbing his shidi’s wrist, Wei WuXian demanded, “Let me go.”
A few senior disciples of the minor sects made way to step forward, however, none were as close as the Lans, who moved together as one near the ensuing conflict.
“My mother went into seclusion because of you!, “Jiang WanYin screeched, “Have you heard what people are saying about her? They’re calling her a lunatic and a demented woman with authority! Am I just supposed to stand there and take it while her integrity is being slandered? How dare you try abandon responsibility and go off with the Lan Sect, have you no loyalty to YunmengJiang!?”
Lan WangJi stepped in front of Wei WuXian, blocking Jiang WanYin’s assault, “Yu-Furens actions are her own, “He said tersely, “She suffers her own consequences.”
“Suffering her own consequences? She’s being tormented because this snake couldn’t help but show off! But I guess that doesn’t matter to the Lan Sect, now does it? You have that big library filled with who knows what; you probably want this deserter to fill an entire new section, huh?, “Jiang WanYin sneered in Lan WangJi’s face
“Wei Ying may choose to share his knowledge with whomever he wishes. The Lan Sect will endeavor to support his research. He needn’t fear abuse for elevating our collective knowledge of cultivation, “Lan WangJi spoke low and deep
Eyes widening in anger, Zidian cracked against the Jiang heirs finger. For the slightest moment, the grounds were filled with the thoughts of a Jiang/Lan warfare if Jiang WanYin decided to strike the second heir to the notorious sect.
“Enough!, “Wei WuXian exclaimed, sensing the growing hostility between the two, “Lan Zhan, let’s just go. Please.”
“Mn, “Lan WangJi replied and raised an arm in the direction his clansmen were waiting, “After you.”
Giving a sideways glance at Jiang WanYin, Wei WuXian simply nodded at the man, knowing words would only escalate the situation. Jiang WanYin scoffed at him, doubling back to the inner halls of the sect.
Turning on their heels, Lan WangJi and Wei WuXian rejoined their group and mounted their swords. In seconds, a huddle of white - and one purple - clad disciples were flying through the air.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“How often did the Violet Spider whip you, Wei WuXian, “the Lan’s chief doctor, Lan Yu asked while running spiritual energy laced hands down the man’s back
Laying shirtless on an examining table, Wei WuXian said nothing while she examined his injuries, a look of indifference upon his face. Having unbandaged his wounds, his back was still bright in color, draining to a light pink over the many hours.
“I’ll remind you that gossip is forbidden amongst the Lans, Young Master Wei, “Lan Yu stated after there was no reply, “You do not have to concern yourself yourself with Madam Yu’s reputation while in our presence; I simply want to know more about my patient’s history.”
Pursing his lips, Wei WuXian still did not reply.
Giving a low hum, Lan Yu retracted their hands and step to the side to retrieve salve and new bandages.
“I hope that you will come to trust us, Young Master Wei, “Lan Yu replied in a low voice as they started to apply the salve, “We Lans haven’t invited you here simply because of your research.”
“I never said you did, “was the first thing Wei WuXian said the entire time he’d be there
“True, you didn’t, “the doctor unfurled the bandages and started to wrap them tight around his person, “I just hope you don’t think that’s the reason. Had anyone else been in your position, I’m sure our Twin Jades would have helped them all the same.”
“Yeah, that does sound like them, “Wei WuXian cracked his neck and then joked, “I thought there would’ve been rule forbidding interaction with me by now, though.”
Pinning the bandages with a couple of clips, Lan Yu gave Wei WuXian a final once over with their spiritual energy.
“Everything looks to be in working order, “they nodded in satisfaction
“That’s good, “Wei WuXian gave them a wide grin, “Now Lan Zhan can stop giving me that doe-eyed look.”
“Doe-eyed?, “Lan Yu raised a brow
A knock sounded at the door, “Lan Yu, may we enter?, “Lan XiChen’s voice was on the other side
“Yes, of course, “they replied while giving the Jiang cultivator another inquisitive glance
Stepping inside, the older jade nodded at the doctor before turning his smile toward the man on the table. Lan WangJi tentatively stepped into the room, standing side by side with his brother.
“Uncle had to head down to Caiyi to check on the Waterborne Abyss, but he promises to be back later today, “Lan XiChen started, “WangJi and I have a night-hunt to get to, but he wanted to check on Young Master Wei before we left.”
“Aw, Lan Zhan, “Wei WuXian said with a teasing lilt in this voice, “I told you I was fine, no need to hold up your night-hunt checking on little old me.”
Lan WangJi blinked at him before looking to Lan Yu, “Is he?”
Wei WuXian rolled his eyes while slipping off the examination table. Walking over to his robes set side and folded neatly by an assistant on a nearby chair, he began to dress.
“Infection has not set in and his meridians are stable, “Lan Yu stated more to the two other Lans than Wei WuXian, “I recommend Young Master Wei take some time out of his schedule to visit the Cold Springs to help accelerate his healing.”
Lan WangJi nodded and gave a bow to the doctor, “I will make him go there as much as possible.”
“Ai-ya, Lan Zhan, “Wei WuXian gaped at his words and put his hands on his hips, “You say that like I’m gonna run away or something.”
“Wei Ying declined Lan Yu’s treatment when we got here this morning, “Lan WangJi gave a glare to the other man, “I had to drag you here.”
The doctor turned to raise a concerned brow at him; Wei WuXian blushed and turned his head away.
“Young Master Wei..., “Lan Yu started
“I’m fine, I’m fine. All of you treating me like some porcelain vase, ah,what am I supposed to think, “Wei WuXian waved them away, “Didn’t you say you had a night-hunt? Best get going, hmm?”
“It shouldn’t take long, “Lan XiChen bowed to the doctor in thanks as well, “We should be back after breakfast tomorrow.”
Sliding on his outer robe, WeI WuXian replied, “Then....I’ll see you both tomorrow.”
...
The next day, Wei WuXian found himself in the Hanshi with Lan Xichen, a sea of cultivation notes strewn about the desk and themselves.
“I never thought you’d let me hold Liebeng, Zewu-jun, “Wei WuXian caressed the flute with a curious look on this face
To his side, Lan XiChen was giving the same amount of attention to Wei WuXian’s ChenQing.
“She’s beautiful; did you craft it yourself, “XiChen fiddled with the jade token on its tassel
“Mhmm, took me forever to find the right piece of bamboo, then even longer to purify and etch in blessings, “WuXian smiled twirling Liebeng
“Is there any specific song you want to play?, “WuXian handed the white xiao back to its owner while retrieving his dizi from the first jade’s hand
“We can play anything really, but I’d like to try a few of my clan’s techniques, “XiChen started, “I’m curious if it’s a instrumental difference or a personal difference in the effects of the song.”
“Right, right, so then we could start with Cleansing or Clarity?, “XiChen and WuXian started to shuffle through the mountain of notes they had accumulated
A light knock sounded at the door before a servant came in, “Young Master Wei, you have received some letters.”
“Already?, “the young man raised a brow while rising from the piles of parchments, “Well, thank you for bringing them.”
Taking the satchel from their hands, he shifted through the parcels. Prim folded letters filled the bag.
An uncomfortable frown found its way onto Wei WuXian’s face, “Ah, these people don’t know when to quit.”
Taking a letter from the tote, the official sign of the PingyangYao sect shined back at him.
XiChen had a bemused smiled watching as a cloud of frustration lined Wei WuXian’s brow.
“That seems like a lot to get through; I can help you pen a few replies, “he tried his best not to laugh
“Ah, Zewu-jun is a life saver.”
...
A few days later, Wei WuXian was asked to attend to a class with Lan Qiren. Being awoken at the ridiculous hour of six in the morning, Wei WuXian found himself in a room filled with juniors not unlike his own lectures seven years ago.
Resisting a yawn, he greeted them, “Morning Little Lans.”
“Good morning, Senior Wei, “the white clad disciples bowed in greeting before sitting down in perfect Lan posture, not reacting to his nickname for them
“We still have a few minutes before your Lan-laoshi gets here, “Wei WuXian started, sitting on Lan Qiren’s desk in the front of the classroom, “Before we’re all stuck in here for hours, any questions?”
The younger disciples suddenly piqued up, all rising from their seats, faces a light with curiosity. Being too young to attend the infamous lecture and banquet, they were left in the Cloud Recesses to read the materials. After, they were overwhelmed with gossip and tales from Caiyi town, and now the center of the commotion was right in front of them.
“Shouldn’t you be resting?”
“How are your back wounds, Senior Wei?”
“How many night-hunts did you have to go on to write all those books?”
Surrounding the older man, the disciples hammered on with their questions and didn’t notice Lan Qiren stepping into the room. A notch appeared on the older man’s forehead as he watched the tornado of students in the front of the class.
“How often were you whipped?”
“Do you plan on going back to your sect, or staying here?”
“Enough!, “Lan Qiren’s voice boomed making all of them flinch, “All of you will copy Etiquette fifty times after class.”
Wei WuXian chuckled at the now dejected faces of the students as they returned to their seats, “Ah, Lan-Laoshi, don’t you think that’s a bit much? They were just curious is all.”
“Should I assign you lines for corrupting our youth?, “The man was stern faced, taping his hand with a scroll, scowling at the younger man, “I also don’t think you finished from the last time you were here; shall I re-instate the punishment?”
Face suddenly covered with sweat, Wei WuXian addressed the students, “Now, now, listen to your Lan-laoshi. I’m....gonna go find your second young master. Where might he be? The library? The library. See you Little Lans.”
Striding out of the room, the students were agape as the Jiang cultivator made a quick escape.
“Senior Wei!, “they cried, “Aren’t you supposed to help teach today?”
“Don’t forget your essays tonight!, “Wei WuXian’s voice called from far off
...
A week later, Wei WuXian found himself in a field with Lan WangJi, along with a few hundred guests.
“Ah, do you really have an entire field of rabbits, Lan Zhan?, “Shuffling through the tall grass, the little balls of fluff jumped here and there to avoid the large human man
“Not mine, “Lan WangJi replied, “I only come to feed them everyone once in a while.”
“And to think that you refused the two I gave you..., “Turning with a large grin , Wei WuXian was suddenly awestruck, “Wait...are those?”
Cuddled in Lan WangJi’s arms were two rabbits, one black and one white. The black rabbit happily kicked its feet against Lan WangJi’s arms while crunching on a piece of lettuce. The white one, on the other hand, chewed sedately, nose twitching at it’s companion.
“Wei Ying’s rabbits, “Lan WangJi brought them closer to Wei WuXian
Taking the white rabbit with one hand, Wei WuXian felt his cheeks flaring up and rubbed the back of his neck, “Ah, Lan Zhan, you must really like rabbits, hmm?”
“ Xiongzhang brought the rest here; I feed them and play music sometimes, “WangJi said, bending down to sit primly in the grass
The Second Jade of Lan was immediately surrounded from all angles by the army of white fur.
Following suit, Wei WuXian was enamored to watch with his chin in his hands, Lan WangJi feed each and every rabbit their own piece of carrot or lettuce, tapping those trying to steal from others on their small little noses.
Covering his face with his hands, Wei WuXian entire body heated up, ‘Lan Zhan, you really are too cute!, ‘he thought
“Wei Ying?, “Peeking through his eyes, Lan WangJi was staring at him
“Huh, oh nothing, “taking the white rabbit back into his hands, he spoke, “so, what’s your name, hmm.”
The white rabbit didn’t seem to be impressed, eyes solely focused on its companion, watching as it claimed Lan WangJi’s lap as its throne, swatting away any other bunny that tried to join it.
“Eh, it’s ignoring me, “shaking the animal lightly, WuXian snarked, “It’s Lan Zhan in rabbit form!”
“Then Yin (Silver) is Wei Ying, “WangJi replied in a dead pan voice
“Yin?, “scratching the white rabbit behind the ears, WuXian gave WangJi a questioning glance
“Yin, “the Second Jade placed a gentle hand on the black rabbit running down its back, “Very energetic. Very mischievous. Ate one of Xiongzhang ’s letters from Chifeng-zun once.”
Snickering, he brought the white rabbit eye level, “So what’s rabbit Lan Zhan’s real name?”
“Yun (Cloud), “WangJi replied, “Only likes playing with Yin.”
The white rabbit illustrated this by swatting at Wei WuXian’s nose with its paw, almost glaring at him.
“Hmm, you want me to put you down, “WuXian grinned flopping the rabbits ears, “you want your friend? Well you can’t have him!”
Reaching over, Lan WangJi saved the rabbit from Wei WuXian’s grasp and placed it in his lap with it’s companion. Raising his arms once more, he captured Wei WuXian’s hands in his.
Wei WuXian grew quiet, staring down at their hands clasped together.
“Lan Zhan?, “was all he could say
“Wei Ying, “Lan WangJi said intertwining their fingers
Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi were once again staring into one another eyes. Silver and Golden eyes radiated with an untold amount of emotions.
Wei WuXian felt his cheeks heating up once more, "Lan Zhan...you-”
Letting go of his hands, Lan WangJi gently shoved the rabbits to the ground and stood with a flourish, “Lunch is in a few hours, let’s rest your wounds in the Cold Springs until then”
Turning around, Lan WangJi walked out of the field as fast as the Lan rules allowed him. Mouth agape, Wei WuXian could only stand on clumsy feet and hurry after him.
“Eh? Ah! Lan Zhan, what? Wait for me!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wei-Xiong How are you? Are you okay? I’ve been missing sleep over this whole thing, I can’t get that banquet out of my head. I knew Yu-Furen could be callous, but I didn’t think that she be that cruel. And to think that she’s been doing this to you for years, I’m sick.
I will say that I’m a bit angry at you; why didn’t you tell me what was happening? I’m your friend aren’t I? I care about you and want you to be okay. If you had said something, I would have tried to talk to Da-ge, maybe we could’ve, oh I don’t know....
Da-ge and I plan on coming to visit XiChen-ge in a few weeks. When I get there, I am taking you to Caiyi Town for some Emperors Smile. Wishing you well. --- Nie Huaisang
Nie-Xiong I am well and I admit I missed the beauty of the Cloud Recesses. The Lan Sect is as beautiful as ever, but, as expected, still no one can match up to the Twin Jades.
I do not wish to worry you, Nie-Xiong. I promise that I am fine and this situation is simply blown out of proportion.
You would not believe these Lans. I can’t go anywhere without someone asking me if I need assistance or worrying about my wounds - which are healing nicely and quickly might I add. Even Lan Zhan, our ever present piece of living jade, keeps around me. Not that I mind his company, but he’s never seemed to want to be around me before, always telling me to “get lost”. What am I supposed to do with this new Lan Zhan?
I will say though that the Cloud Recesses is lacking in the other sort of material that you and I enjoy. If you would be so inclined, dear friend, would you send me a package? I promise your discretion will be repaid in full. ---Wei WuXian
...
a-Xian It has only been a few weeks, but I can feel your absence greatly. I miss your smile; it always seemed to brighten my day. I cannot wait for your time in the Cloud Recesses to be over; I’ve bought some rare chilies from the market; I plan on making you a special pot of pork rib and lotus root soup when you get back.
a-Cheng has taken to pushing the shidis like mother; the other day he made them train with weights for six hours straight and then made them run the entire training grounds twenty times. He has been very gloomy ever since you left, and I think this is his way to vent. I think he’s still a bit sad that he can’t practice his sword forms, due to his cast.
Father rarely leaves his office these days other than to eat and sleep. A servant has told me that the minor sect leaders keep hounding him about his lack of action with mother. Sect Leader He even said that our clan was dishonorable for mother’s treatment of you. Father looks so haggard whenever we have dinner together.
And that’s not all. Last week, one of the merchants we normally trade with retracted their contract with us. We will no longer be receiving the amount of talisman paper, inkstones, and supplies that we normally get.
Mother is still in seclusion, but she converses with Madam Jin by letter. I happened upon one; Jin GuangShan is refusing to re-instate my betrothal to ZiXuan again. Due to the banquet, he believes that the Jiang Sect’s reputation would only taint LanlingJin’s; Madam Jin and mother are both enraged. --- Jiang Yanli
Shijie I am healing nicely, so nicely, I will probably end up leaving early. The Cloud Recesses are nice, but making sure my Shijie is happy is even nicer! I do not want you to be sad, and I’m sorry that this situation has stressed you so.
Tell Jiang Cheng that the shidis need positive reinforcement and breaks; otherwise they will strain themselves and possibly harm their cores. Do not tell him I said that.
I myself have been receiving letters from the minor sects. If Uncle Jiang wants, I could take on some of his work load, just send the letters to me here. It is unfortunate that the merchant has decided they no longer wish to work with us, but I’m certain we can find another in time. Since the minor sects are rallying against YunmengJiang it is only profitable to be one of the only merchants not on our payroll.
XianXian cannot wait to taste your extra spicy pork rib and and lotus root soup! I’ll even bring some jars of Emperor’s Smile back for us all to enjoy. There’s a vendor who sells loquats, so I’ll make sure to buy some baskets and pastries when I leave. ---Your Forever Three Year Old XianXian
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“WuXian, are you sure you’re up for a nighthunt?, “Lan XiChen raised a brow at the grinning man
“Zewu-jun, no offense, but if I don’t get off this mountain tonight, I’m going to scream, “Wei WuXian huffed in bemusement, “I can’t stay cooped up here forever; besides, it’s just some walking corpses, right?”
“Mm, “XiChen replied, “the villagers have barricaded themselves in the northern villages to escape, the southern town has been completely run over.”
Climbing upon their swords, the three cultivators and their entourage sailed through the night sky. The villages were only a couple hours away by sword, so it took no time at all to reach the deserted province.
XiChen took out a map, “Let’s all split up into groups. Lan Bao and I will cover the markets. Lan Ju and Bai An Na will cover the residential area. Gong JingYi and Lan Qing will perimeter the village, and WuXian and WangJi will clear the surrounding forest. Everyone understand? After you finish, head straight to the village center.”
Everyone nodded in in agree and sent off into their teams. Brandishing a Demon Wind Compass, WangJi and WuXian headed off the into the surrounding trees.
The forest was silent except for a few trilling insects and owls. The sound of their feet against the rough ground was like the constant thump of a beating heart.
“Lan Zhan?, “Looking to his side, Wei WuXian had a contemplative look on his face
Lan Wangji hummed in reply.
“We’re friends right?, “Wei WuXian gave a small smile
“Yes, “Lan WangJi replied without hesitation
“Good. That’s good, “WuXian said kicking a stray rock out of his way
The continued walking in silence for a few more minutes.
“I really wanted to be your friend when we were younger, “WuXian said to clear the silence, “I thought that if I could get past that cold exterior of yours, you’d be really fun to play with.”
“We are friends now, “WangJi stated
“Yeah, but we’ve missed so much time together, “WuXian countered, “There’s so much we missed out on! So many places in Yunmeng I wanted to take you to.”
“We can still go, “WangJi said, “After you are healed.”
WuXian let out a small huff, “Ah, Lan Zhan, how smart of you, but I’ll probably be very busy when I go back to the sect.”
“You intend to go back?, “WangJi questioned
“Hmm, of course I do. What other choice do I-”
*SCHREEEEEEECH*
“What was that, “shifting in defensive stances, the two were immediately on edge
*SCHREEEEEEECH* *SCHREEEEEEECH*
Sound blaring out into the night, birds and critters normally sleep at night startled and ran away from the piercing sound. Looking to his companion, WangJi and WuXian nodded at one another and unsheathed their blades.
“I’ll take left, “WuXian said hurriedly while rushing into the trees
The forest returned to its quiet state, but the calm air had long disappeared. The cool wing now felt harsh against his bare skin.
Taking out his compass once more, the needle pointed back towards the village.
“Not working? How’s that possible?, “he mumbled to himself
“Ying, ”a voice called out
“Who’s there, “raising Subian, he glared into the darkness
“Ying, ”it said once more
Throwing up a light talisman, the trees produced elongated shadows, towering around him. The branches were thin and prickly, almost like sharp nails.
“a-Ying~, ”it sang, almost taunting
“Lan Zhan?, “Wei WuXian turned in a circle and called out to his partner, “Lan Zhan, are you there?”
The wind laughed at him, leaves tearing from their branches showered down upon him.
“Who’s there, “ banishing talisman in hand, he gritted his teeth, “Come out right now.”
“Young Master Wei?, “a familiar voice called
“Zewu-jun?, “Wei WuXian said, confusion lining his voice
“Young Master Wei!?, “the voice called again, “Where are you?”
“Zewu-jun?, “Wei WuXian called back, “I’m over here!”
The wind blew harshly once more, branches crackling around him. Another sound shifted from behind him; the bushes rustled violently.
Turning rapidly in defense, Wei WuXian gasped as a black shroud covered his vision.
“!!!”
...
Lan WangJi sat against the wall of the village gate, posture perfect and face looking devoid of any emotion. The only sound he made was the rapid tapping of his fingers against the wall. Not facing his other group mates, his eyes laid perfectly on the surrounding forests of the village, searching.
“I hope Young Master Wei is alright, “Lan Bao said tapping their foot repeatedly against the ground, “it’s only been a couple hours, but what if his back wounds acted up?”
“He has a signal flare on him. If it were truly serious, he would have called for us, “Gong JingYi tried to placate them
“Young Master Gong is right, “Lan Qing agreed, “Besides, the Demon Wind Compass isn’t detecting anything dangerous from the forests.”
Lan Bao sighed and stopped their foot, “That’s why I’m worried. The villagers said the town and surrounding areas had been taken over, but Second Young Master Lan didn’t find anything before he came back.”
The three fell silent once more.
Lan WangJi paused his hand, taking his own compass out of his sleeves. Staring at the unmoving needle, he narrowed his eyes in question.
“Medic!, “the sound of Zewu-jun shouting had everyone’s head turning in alarm
“Xiongzhang?, “Lan WangJi was to his feet quickly, rushing towards his brother’s voice
The others followed, clamoring behind the second jade as he pushed through the tall trees. The came upon a clearing.
Lan Qing gasped, “Zewu-jun! Young Master Wei!”
Lan XiChen was pale faced, one arm slung around Wei WuXian’s waist and the other having slung his right arm around his shoulders. He wasn’t conscious from what they could see, feet dragging on the ground and head lolled forward, but most alarming....
blood was gushing out his neck!
“WuXian’s been injured; we need to leave now!”

Author’s Notes:
-The original draft of this entire fic was only four chapters long, you can see how that turned out.
-Yes, I know this chapter is almost 5k words, but you wouldn’t believe it was much longer before I re-wrote it, it was at least 8k in the first draft
-I made WWX a little bit terser with JC cause I feel like if No SSC happened and living with Madam Yu and JC’s shit for even longer would have him treating JC like his resurrected self does quicker. Also, no 22yr old man is gonna baby another 22yr old lol.
-However, I also wanted to show that the Jiang’s abuse and conditioning is still in affect/there with his interactions with others. Hope I did a good job of it.
-I feel like a no SSC Lan WangJi might try to get with Wei WuXian, especially since he’s had time to work over his feeling with no war in the way. And then especially if the man he loved was whipped right in front of him.

----
Since the day Wei Ying had confronted the different sects as they had planned his demise, the dark energy swirling around burial mount had grown several times heavier and harder to control – even though it had only been a few weeks.
Even Wei Ying himself could nearly not stand it anymore.
He kept seeing heart wrenching visions and haunting nightmares. His ears were filled with the wails of the dead. He could hear them pleading him to spare their lives. He could hear them cursing his name. He could even hear their blood rushing out of their bodies as the corpses he commanded ripped them to shreds.
Whenever he closed his eyes, he would see the murders he chose to commit – his acts as ‘war hero’ during the sunshot campaign, like the torturing and murder of worthless men like Wen Chao – and those he failed to prevent himself from causing – the murder of Jin Zixuan, Jiang Yanli and probably half of all his later kills, to be honest.
Only now did he understand that he had started to lose his senses somewhere along the path he had chosen.
He had believed to be in control of everything, but looking back, maybe he had already started going insane when he was first thrown into the abyss of the burial mount. He had just always been held back somewhere along the borders of being a genius before he could turn into a full-blown madman.
But now? What was there to ground him?
The sunshot campaign was over, Jiang Cheng wanted him dead just like everyone else, his shijie was dead – she had been slaughtered to save him and the people who had looked at him with admiration and called him the greatest war hero of the sunshot campaign, had all turned their backs on him now that they had started to fear his power. Even Wen Qing was gone, and Wen Ning had even died a second death.
And Wei Ying himself had lost all will to make the world understand, that he would not threaten them as long as they didn’t cross him.
Especially since they already gone ahead and crossed him anyway. After all they had dared to lay hands on the Wen-siblings, who had been innocent of all of Wen Rouhans’ crimes. They had even dared to continue trying to fault him for anything that went wrong anywhere – even though he and the Wens were only trying to live a peaceful life amongst themselves.
Besides, it was not like anyone would listen to him at this point of time anyway – after all he had killed a few thousands of cultivators a few weeks back.
And maybe the truth was simply cruel as life itself: A choice had to be made – there would be either the rest of the cultivation world or him. They didn’t want to live besides him. He couldn’t live besides them any longer either.
The hatred inside him had grown to strong – it overpowered all of his senses. It was numbing him, tempting him to do all the wrong things. No, at this rate he would just end up ending all of these cultivators miserable lives.
Wei Ying rose from his bed inside the demon slaughtering cave. He needed to get the rest of the Wens away from here. He needed to at least protect them from whatever war would follow between the world and himself.
Especially considering the fact that either the major sects would come here and try to kill him – taking the Wens down along with him even though they were only weakened people – or he himself would do something stupid and would end up endangering them, dragging them down to hell with him.
As he moved towards the mouth of the cave, Wei Ying found himself stumbling more than he was walking.
His head was full of noises again. His vision was dulled, the resentful energy gripped at his heart and mind. He could feel everything clouding up again.
Maybe the stygian tiger seal was partly at fault for that. It kept attracting the dark clouds around him even though he long since couldn’t deal with them anymore.
Maybe he had really created a weapon that no one should possess – him included.
Maybe Lan Zhan had been right. With everything. Maybe he should have listened to him. But then again, he hadn’t had a choice. He didn’t have a golden core anymore. He could only walk this narrow path in the darkness now – he could only rely on the dead and their hatred.
He had forfeited his humanity when he refused to die inside burial mount.
There was a saying befitting og this. And for him it had most definitely become true. ‘You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain’.
“Are you ok?”
Wei Ying looked up, his gaze found a strange red blotch of color in front of him. He blinked, trying to focus his eyes, trying to figure out who was standing on front of him.
But right now, couldn’t even identify the speakers voice – and suddenly panic kicked in. This could be an enemy!
Quickly reaching for Chenquin, all his senses kicked into an alarmed state of needing to kill the threat. He could feel the resentful energy bundling around the flute – and usually his targets fear would join the hatred he accumulated through his technique.
But right now, there was no fear. Who in their right mind could be stupid enough not to fear him? While he was off-guard due to shock, he felt something colliding with his right leg. A very familiar weight.
“A-Yuan?”
Suddenly his mind cleared again, his eyes free of whatever fog had blocked them before, his ears no longer filled with cries and death wishes directed at him.
Quickly looking at whomever he had nearly killed off, he saw granny Wen. His stomach churned. How could he have mistaken her for a threat? Especially when her lack of fear symbolized just how much trust she had in him, how strongly she believed he would not harm her.
“Sister, granny said I should come to you! She said you were looking out of it ever since you returned here!”
Looking down at the brightly smiling child twisted Wei Yings insides around even more. He quickly put Chenquin away, pushing his guild to the back of his mind so he could pick A-Yuan up, cuddling him close – already regretting having to send him far away to protect him.
“Is that so? What else did Granny say? Did she tell you how I returned?”
Trying to smile and not show that he did not at all remember his returning here, Wei Ying cast a short glance in the direction of granny Wen.
She smiled meekly, then uttered a sudden – and obviously fake – complaint about her back hurting and left.
Wait, what had she told the kid?
“She said you walked here looking like your soul had been sucked out! And you kept mumbling about random things like revenge, wanting to burn the world to the ground, oh and you talked about brother rich!”
The happy way the child chatted about all this made it obvious that he didn’t understand a single word of all that.
In fact A-Yuan seemed to only care about his dear ‘brother rich’, he nearly immediatly went over to telling Wei Ying just how much he wanted to see ‘brother rich’ again.
But Wei Ying didn’t listen anymore. He understood why he had been talking about the end of the world, or better yet: his wish to be that cause of the said event, but why would he talk about Lan Zhan?
Trying to think back on whatever may have made him talk about Lan Zhan, he remembered only bits and pieces of certain scenes.
Lan Zhan had stood among the rows of people discussing how to kill him – so Lan Zhan must want him to perish. Seemingly punishing Wei Ying by taking him back to Gusu was no longer enough to satisfy the man.
The ugly feeling of an all-consuming hatred boiled up inside Wei Ying. Why did Lan Zhan have to be this way? He had already wanted to punish Wei Ying when everyone else had still praised him. And now that everyone wanted him dead, even that overly honorable white marble statue of a man, decided killing him would be better than punishing him? And that even though the Gusu Lan Sect forbade killing?
But of course there would be exceptions. What a hypocrite!
“-mother and father.”
A-Yuans laughter ripped Wei Ying out of his thoughts. He had to blink a few times to progress what the child had just said.
“A-Yuan- what was that just now?”
The boy smiled even broader and ripped his small hands into the air, elated as he started to talk again – not at all minding that Wei Ying had seemingly not listened.
“Granny said you and brother rich had a special relationship! She always said you are happier whenever he is around – you will smile a lot more than usually. So I thought you must like brother rich just as much as me and that is why he should visit us more often!”
Still not comprehending what that had to do with the whole mother/father thing, Wie Ying shifted A-Yuans weight onto only one of his arms, so he could poke his nose with the other.
“Don’t talk such nonsense little radish. I am always a happy person, that has nothing to do with Lan Zhan. Besides, this has nothing to do with what you said before anyway, does it?”
A-Yuan scrunched his nose up, looking like a cute little bunny – especially when he went over to covering up his nose with his little hands – all in order to protect it from future assaults.
“It does! Granny said you liked brother rich like a mommy likes a daddy!”
Wei Yings teasing fingers, which had tried to catch A-Quan off guard and poke him again, froze in midair.
Wei Yings entire face fell and went pale.
What had A-Yuan just said? And why would granny Wen even tell such things to a child? What kind of old-people-joke was this?
Lan Zhan had never even just liked him, he even wanted him dead now!
So how could Wei Ying feel anything else than the desire to defeat Lan Zhan and be as far away from him as possible?
“Besides, he is my father, didn’t you say so yourself?”
A-Yuan may have been nothing but a child, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t smart enough to see when he could get a jab in. After all the kid had always been cheeky. And smart enough to use anything anyone ever said against them.
“I never said that!”
Not even knowing why he was defending himself against a mere toddler, Wei Ying went over to displaying a complete denial.
While he did so, a scene popped into his head.
Lan Zhan was walking through the village at the foot of burial mount with them. He was buying toys for A-Yuan – which earned him the nickname ‘brother rich’ from the child.
At some point A-Yuan had been hungry and-
Wei Yings memory flashed back to how he had found Lan Zhan that day in the first place. A-Yuan had run off somewhere. He had run straight into Lan Zhan.
And being panicked and the little child he was, he had started wailing at the man’s feet, clinging to his cloths.
A crowd had gathered, commenting about how ‘fathers would often be overstrained with their first child’.
And that scene, combined with the later one of them strolling around and Lan Zhan showering A-Yuan with presents, had brough a careless sentence out of Wei Yings mouth.
“The one with the money is the father, the one with the milk the mother.” – And in the context from back then, this made him the mother and Lan Zhan the father as Wei Ying normally provided A-Yuan with food and Lan Zhan provided the child with toys on this particular day.
Wei Ying flushed – God, why had he said that back then? That was super embarrassing!
“You should forget that again A-Yuan. Just call him brother rich, ok?” Wei Ying laughed it off, feeling a bit awkward. Looking back he was actually surprised Lan Zhan had taken all that so well back then. After all with his typical Lan-wits he probably hadn’t taken as long as Wei Ying to understand what his careless words had implied. The man really seemed to have a frightening self-control.
“Does that mean I should call you brother poor?”
The child had definitely seen Wei Ying losing control of the situation. And seemingly Wei Yings mischievousness and insolence had straight off been absorbed by the child.
“Just continue calling me brother. That is enough. And no, before you start calling me brother poor again, call me mommy. At least that gives me the image of someone pretty.”
Being jokingly diplomatic, Wei Ying shook his head, offhandedly noting how his conversation with A-Yuan, even though it most certainly had been a strange one, had somehow given him so much normality that his inner demons for once weren’t to be heard or seen.
Wei Ying smiled a bit more genuinely. The power this toddler had was unbelievable. It made it nearly inhumane to think about him being somewhere completely different than at his side someday soon.
But then again, that was the only way in which the boy had a chance to live and grow into a fine – or not so fine and more troublesome if he took after him – man someday.
“Oh well, never mind. Let’s join granny and the others for now.”
What followed wasn’t exactly what Wei Ying had expected. As soon as he had brought up the topic of the Wens leaving, he was hit with a hours long storm of ‘no’s and ‘we won’t leave you behind’s. Had A-Yuan not been there, the discussion would most likely have turned into a fight.
“Wei Ying, most of us are in no condition to travel anyway.” Uncle four gave Wei Ying a shrug. “We wouldn’t make it far anyway.”
Wei Ying had wanted to disagree, but before he could open his mouth, he felt a heatwave erupting in his left sleeve.
He quickly reached inside it, pulling out a burning talisman.
His face turned dark. The defenses of burial mound had been breached.
Someone was trying to sneak in. And ‘someone’ in this case was most probably an army of cultivators.
“Leave now!” Knowing it would be too late to run now but feeling more desperate to get the Wens out of harms way than ever, he rose up, making sure to make all of the Wens understand that the mount was under siege.
“We lived on borrowed time anyway. We have no issue with dying.” Granny Wen tried to calm Wei Yings down from his frenzied state but failed.
“And what about A-Yuan! Doesn’t he deserve to live!?”
Already holding Chenquin in an iron grip, Wei Ying could feel the resentful energy flowing into his body with the intent to swallow him whole and eating him alive.
And his soul offered no resistance. He wanted the strength, that the resentful energy could give him.
He needed it.
Else the Wens would die. A-Yuan would die.
“No, you must come with us then!” A-Yuan, even though he was much too young to understand what was going on, did so anyway. It broke Wei Yings heart and at the same time gave birth to even more hatred inside his body.
How dare the renown sects act as they pleased and even traumatize a child, making it understand the cruel twists of life much sooner than nature should ever have allowed.
“I will hold them up, I will follow you afterwards.”
Even though the darkness inside of him was starting to blur the lines of reality and hallucination already, Wei Ying made a last attempt on convincing the Wens too flee.
“You will only burden me if you stay around – my abilities aren’t suited to protect, they can only destroy!”
A ringing filled Wei Yings head. He could hear the resentful energy talking to him, updating him on how fast the enemies were closing in. They seemed to be numerous, intend on trampling everything down.
Wei Ying knew they didn’t have any more time to waste.
He turned, left the Wens and rushed towards the top of the demon slaughtering caves roof.
Overlooking the situation as much as possible, he took a deep breath and pushed all the air in his lungs into his flute.
A sharp shriek erupted from the instrument.
Hundreds of corpses rose inside the mounts abysses.
The already awakened dead bodies, which hadn’t already been fighting, lunged at the enemies.
Wei Ying played an aggressive, eerie tune, knowing full well that he was forcing too much resentful energy to move around.
With his instable state of mind and most importantly: his growing self-destructive tactics, he knew all this would backfire.
He suddenly knew he would die today.
All of his restraints broke – he decided to take as many his foes with him as possible, hoping to weaken them enough to give the Wens a last chance.
He closed his eyes, gave in to the darkness, surrendering in his inner struggle, letting the darkness eat away his conscience.
No cell inside him cared about the fact that he was about to murder about an estimated another few thousands count of cultivators just to save less than fifty elderly Wens and a child.
He didn’t care about truly becoming the devil they claimed him to be.
Whatever, in that case he would die as hollowed out shell of a man. This battle would turn him into a resentful spirit, his soul would have to be subdued by destroying it since cleansing would no longer be possible. But that was fine. May they shred his body and soul apart.
He drew even more piercing tones out of his flute, patching them into an ugly version of a beautiful melody.
He could hear the metal sounds of swords and sabers cutting through corpses drawing closer – music followed right after.
It was like an awful cacophony of war.
Wei Ying closed his eyes forcefully, focusing on producing wave after wave of corpses.
Finally, he had created so many of them that he could no longer control them with just Chenquin.
In a show of pure insanity, he fished for the two separated parts of the stygian tiger seal and put them together.
The resulting shockwave of dark energy blew even him off of his spot. He tumbled downwards, crashing down into the dirt, all air was knocked out of him. He tried to regain composure, but the seal was way too powerful.
He could feel the corpses breaking free from their reigns, he lost his control over them in a lapse.
Horror-filled screams filled the air.
The corpses now attacked everything in their way – may it be an enemy or another corpse.
Realising this, common sense suddenly kicked right into Wei Yings gut. The Wens! They wouldn’t be safe with the corpses going rouge!
Just like he had struggled back then – when his sister had run onto the battlefield in hopes of stopping him – he fought to get the corpses to calm down.
He fought to get back onto his feat, fought to clear his mind enough to overpower the resentment in himself, fought to fish out the full potential inside him to revoke whatever hell he had summoned forth.
But there was only one calming thing coming to his mind. A song. A song he had never seen the sheet music off. In fact, he couldn’t even remember where he had the melody from either.
But he focused on the music in his memories and started to put a few handfuls of corpses to sleep.
He needed to reduce their numbers to prevent losing control. He absolutely had to.
Then a scream ripped straight into his soul. Granny Wen.
Dread filled him.
As he rushed to where he had heard the scream coming from, he forgot all about repressing the dark energy. The seal started absorbing more and more resentment in his hand.
He could feel it starting to twist his mind.
Shortly before he could drown in whatever dark pool the seal was trying to pull him into, he was faced with the sight of Nie Mingjue towering above a split-up group of the Wen remnants. About seven of them were lying on the ground. – dead. They had not died peacefully. All of them had gruesome slashes on their bodies. Blood pooled around them, coloring the dark earth of the burial mount crimson like the blood pool.
Rage blinded Wei Ying, his inner pain killing his sanity.
He used the stygian tiger seal.
The Wens peoples corpses rose up – attacking the Nie sect leader.
Wei Yings insanity didn’t allow him to see whatever happened to the other Wens, he could only hear that voice inside his head.
Demanding him to kill everyone who stood against him.
And he gave in, commanding all corpses to go on a bloodly murder spree.
Letting the seal take over, then letting the corpses go loose, he rushed straight at Nie Mingjue, kicking him down onto the ground.
Never had he missed his sword this much. He wanted to slit the man’s throat and let him bleed out more than anything else. He wanted him to face the pain of a sword like he had made the Wens face his saber.
But since he couldn’t fight with a sword anymore and didn’t have it on himself either, he decided to go another path – one for which he did not need a golden core.
With his free hand he grasped for sect leader Nies face, pouring an endless stream of dark energy into the man’s body.
He could Feel Nie Mingjues golden core growing corrupt inside the his body as he went into qi deviation.
Wei Ying could feel the man dying underneath him, but he didn’t stop. He wanted him dead – even if he was the older brother of a guy he had once considered to be one of his closest friends.
“Elder brother!” The call may not have addressed Wei Ying, but it warned him of the incoming attack.
Letting go of Nie Mingjue, Wei Ying jumped backwards, in a quick movement pocketing the seal and getting out his flute, lifting it to his lips.
Lan Xichen, whose original intent it had been to save his elder sworn brother, was forced to dodge the incoming rain of three corpses attacks.
“WEI WUXAIN!”
The new voice didn’t reach Wei Ying anymore, the haze around his senses had become too heavy – Wei Ying could only tell that someone had screamed something.
He however felt an attack incoming and promptly twisted his flute away from his mouth and into the way of the incoming swords strike, effectively blocking it.
The flute didn’t crack or give way.
Instead, its dark energy transferred straightly onto the weapon, running along its blade and reaching for the attackers’ golden core, wanting to corrupt it.
Jiang Chengs sense of danger warned him before he had even understood the situation fully, his golden core alarming him quickly enough. He jumped back, sheeting his sword and summoning his mothers whip.
The ring on his finger quickly transformed into a violet, crackling manifest of a lightning bolt.
Making an attempt to hit Wei Ying with Zidian, Jiang Cheng failed to pay enough attention to his surroundings – as Wei Ying dodged, the whip hit a big rock, which promptly cracked into two halves, of which one nearly immediately tumbled down towards them.
Jiang Cheng moved to the side, Lan Xichen reached for Nie Mingjue and jumped out of the way as well. The boulder hit two unsuspecting cultivators who had been further behind of them, fending off the corpses that threatened to come too close to the sect leaders.
Both of them were crushed into a paste.
Even the resentful energy all around them could patch them up well enough for them to rise up as corpses.
“Wei Ying!”
Still hearing nothing, Wei Ying lifted the flute to his lips once again, playing the attack melody he had once written for Wen Ning. The music enhanced the corpses in a hundred-meter radius of his own position. Making them faster, stronger and most of all more resilient.
”Wei Ying!”
This time the call was paired with someone closing in on Wei Ying – and that he most definitely took note off.
“There is fire!”
Now that he was aware again, he recognized uncle fourths voice.
Summoning a bunch of corpses to keep the three sect leaders in front of him busy, Wei Ying worked on finding out from where the fire was coming.
He quickly noticed it crawling up the back of the mount.
What a great strategy – the sects waves of cultivators came from the front while a fire ate away the only escapes routes the inhabitants of the burial mount had.
Trying to assess how great the danger coming from the flames was, Wei Ying looked around.
He only saw uncle forth and A-yuan.
Neither of them looking good.
“Where is the rest!?”
Dreading the response, Wei Ying rushed over to the two, taking A-Yuan from uncle forth when he hunched over in a fit of coughs.
“Slaughtered, smoked out, burned, drowned in the blood pool, or pushed down into the abyss. And I don’t have too much air left, my old body won’t be able to survive this.”
Wei Ying didn’t even try to convince Uncle forth that he would live. He knew very well that the man wouldn’t live through the night – even without the cultivators threatening his life on top of the flames smoke poisoning the old mans system.
Instead, Wei Ying clutched A-Yuan to his chest, noticing that the boy to be unconscious and running a high fever already.
Again he reached for the stygian tiger seal.
Weij Ying clutched it harshly, using the force of all the resentment in the air, that it cracked.
The crack immediately loosened large bits of the control the seal held over the corpses, making them grow even more fierce and bloodthirsty.
Wei Ying allowed the side effect of the crack, a painful backlash, to shake his body, ripping at his mind and heart.
He knew this little crack was enough to make the corpses all over burial mount run wild – feed only by resentment and not restrained in any form or kind.
Even Wei Ying himself felt the resentment taking him over more and more. But he didn’t allow it to overpower him. Not while he had A-Yuan in his arms.
Forced to watch on as uncle forth drowned in the resentment and died at its hands, he looked on as uncle forth became one of his corpses.
Giving a short whistle, Wei Ying gave uncle forth the command to protect A-Yuan and escape with him – to bring him somewhere far away and put him down at some families doorstep. Wei Ying would just hope the best from there on.
After he was sure the corpse wouldn’t defy his orders, he laid the unconscious toddler into the corpse’s arms.
A few moments later he found himself engaged in a fight with Lan Xichen.
Since his mind was still rather clear, he could easily see through all of Lan Xichens attacks. He had crossed swords with Lan Zhan often enough to know all the Lan sects preferred moves.
And mind you, Lan Zhan was much better than Lan Xichen when it came to fighting.
Lan Xichen lacked the fierce determination to come out as the victor. He was too soft. He tried to reason things out. To bad, Wei Ying didn’t feel like reasoning things out.
In fact, he managed to gain the upper hand and push Lan Xichen back more and more.
Only a little bit more and he would have him-
“Don’t move Wei Ying!”
Turning, surprised to hear his adoptive brother behind him, as he had never noticed him move there, he was even more shocked when he saw A-Yuan in Jiang Chengs grasp.
The purple clad man was holding the poor child by his ancle, letting him dangle down from his hand.
“Let go of him!” Not watching Lan Xichen in his panic, Wei Ying suffered a sidewards incoming blow to his upper arm, a deep gash ripping his flesh wide open.
He only felt a dull pain, the resentful energy had taken most of his senses out already.
His eyes stayed on A-Yuan.
“So, this kid didn’t get kidnapped by you? Is he yours?”
The way Jiang Chengs voice went from gruesome to pleased in a sickening way.
Wei Ying growled.
“Let. Him. Go. This is between you people and me. A-Yuan has nothing to do with this.”
“Shijie had nothing to do with this either!”
With that Jiang Cheng lifted the blade of his sword, pointing it at A-Yuan dangling from his other arm.
Wei Ying blackened out.
Within a split second he had lifted his flute to his lips, commanding all dead spirits of burial mount forth at once.
Vengeful spirits didn’t take as much effort to summon as corpses did, so Jiang Cheng found himself drowning in them within a heartbeats time.
He had to let A-Yuan go unless he wanted to be corrupted right on the spot.
Wei Ying rushed forwards, moving to catch the child before he quickly distanced himself from the scene, not wanting to risk his own spirit being overwritten.
As soon as he was a safe distance away, he looked at A-Yuan.
His breathing had gone from labored to shallow.
The child was dying.
And that was when Wei Ying finally lost it completely.
Now not only were all of the Wens gone, no, even A-Yuan would be dead soon. And he himself too.
And that was when it hit him. Yes, he had known he would die along, but he hadn’t had what it took to end his life right on the spot.
But now he had gained exactly that.
So may the suicidal mass murder start.
He fished out the stygian tiger seal and slammed it into the ground, kneeling down next to it – holding A-Yuan cradled to his chest.
Drawing in all the resentful energy he could accumulate, Wei Ying gathered it where his golden core would usually have been sitting.
After he was sure he had bundled enough hatred, he then proceeded to push it directly into the stygian tiger seal, intending to crush it once and for all.
He could see Nie Mingjue, Lan Xichen, Jin Guangyao, Su She and a bunch of other cultivators close in on him. They seemed to have gotten past the corpses.
But that wouldn’t do them any good. The spirits around Juang Cheng quickly washed over to them as well, giving Wei Ying the time he needed to execute his plan.
He only had to obliterate that evil-summoning seal. That way no one would be able to use it ever again – not him and not anyone else.
And everyone on this mount would be whipped out as side effect.
A-Yuan and he himself would perish due to the backlash of the whole affair. The rest of the cultivators, who were further away from the seal, would die due to the fierce corpses going absolutely rampant.
And the corpses that were left standing after all this was over would roam burial mount for all times, keeping everyone else away from it – that way no one could ever come here again and start to accumulate this raw evil energy, like he had done it after being dropped here.
This would be the final battle – taking out the grandmaster of demonic cultivation and all the sects who had been stupid enough to come here on this day. Or at least all the cultivators of said sects who were present.
The seal started to crack more and more. Wei Ying watched on, his eyes cold, uncaring – in the face of death he found himself calmer than ever.
Then suddenly, he saw a flash of a memory.
He saw the seals memories.
He saw the times he had used it.
He saw… Lan Zhan?
Focusing on that particular frame, he saw the battle a few weeks ago.
He saw himself going wild, loosing all sense and even consciousness as he blacked out and fought simply fueled by resentment. He saw what happened after his memory had stopped keeping track of his doings.
He had murdered nearly everyone. No surprise there.
Only a few were left standing – and even they weren’t really standing anymore.
He could see the poor few still living crawling on the bloodied ground, trying to get up as he towered above them, crushing the hand of a cultivator reaching for his sword.
Then he saw Lan Zhan.
He was limping, his usually pristine white robes were dirtied and bloodied.
His headband was slightly crooked, his hair no longer neatly styled – he no longer looked like an untouchable god. He looked… exhausted. Human.
“Wei Ying”
Lan Zhans voice was still strong, but it sounded pleading. It sounded like a ‘Please stop’.
Wei Ying saw himself, saw how he didn’t even take note of it. Saw how he was attacked once more.
And then he saw the impossible.
It wasn’t him who blocked the blow. It was Lan Zhan.
“Traitor!”
Wei Ying had absolutely no idea who that ruffled up guy was, but he seemed familiar. Su She? Maybe?
Lan Zhan remained quiet.
Wei Ying himself as well. He watched the memory, saw how his past self remained unmoving, looking like an angered corpse that was somehow still shedding tears.
“How can you defend him again! I always knew you weren’t as upright as you always acted! You court the devil by keeping that man alive!”
“No.”
The way Lan Zhan spoke made it obvious that he did not think of Wei Ying as evil.
Wei Ying couldn’t help but be surprised.
He kept on pressing down onto the seal, hoping to see the rest of the memory before the seal broke and he perished along with it.
He needed to know why Lan Zhan had been defending him.
And he did find out.
The memory progressed with Lan Zhan bringing Wei Ying from the battlefield.
Wei Ying could see how out of it he was, he could see that nothing would have ever reached him in that state, but Lan Zhan kept trying.
He was taking Wei Ying to a safe spot – a cave far away from the battle.
And as though that was not already enough, Lan Zhan started to take care of Wei Yings wounds, speaking soft reassuring words while Wei Ying kept trying to push him away, even cursing him.
But Lan Zhan tolerated it all.
And that was when Wei Ying got a glimpse of Lan Zhans eyes – in that memory he looked different.
And suddenly something clicked inside Wei Ying. Lan Zhan didn’t hate him.
But before the stone, that had been kicked into motion, could turn into a landslide, the memory showed its last scene.
Thirty three men appeared behind Lan Zhan, they demanded him to hand over Wei Ying.
Lan Zhan blocked them, even though they were clearly all elders from his clan.
He told them to step back – they did not.
He warned them not to try and touch Wei Ying – they tried.
Lan Zhan fought them all, striking them all down. In the end he said he would accept punishment for his crimes, he would go with them, but he wouldn’t let them harm Wei Ying.
Seeing how little choice they truly had, the elders accepted. Otherwise Lan Zhan could and probably would have cut them apart.
Lan Zahn faded out of the memory, just like the elders.
Tears suddenly filled Wei Yings eyes. But not because of himself.
He had been a student at Gusu Lan for long enough to know what punishment someone would get for hurting an elder and defying them.
And hurting thirty-three of them would mean thirty-three times the punishment: thirty-three lashes from the disciplinary whip.
Lan Zhan couldn’t have survived that.
Wei Yings emotions scrambled into place, finally he understood.
Lan Zhan had never accepted anyone breaking the rules, touching him or calling him by his birth name – but Wei Ying always got away with it – even if he was punished.
Still: Lan Zhan had never punished him any more severe than the rules asked for.
And back then when they had fought the tortoise of slaughter, he had refused all ideas that would have ended in Wei Ying sacrificing himself.
And much, much later, when everyone had called him a genius, a war hero, Lan Zhan was the only one who had told him off.
He was the only one who told him how much Wei Ying was harming himself.
So looking back, Lan Zhans ‘Come back to Gusu with me’ had probably never referred to a punishment.
Lan Zhan had wanted to help him.
Only an Idiot wouldn’t get that after seeing that memory.
Lan Zhan had looked at him with so much fond caring, there was no way that Lan Zhan didn’t care for him in one way or another.
Suddenly Wei Ying wanted nothing more than to see Lan Zhan and apologize.
Hopefully they would meet in death.
He pushed down onto the seal a final time, watching it crashing apart, finally giving in underneath the pressure and breaking into a million tiny pieces.
Wei Ying closed his eyes, accepting his fate with the last few tears slipping down his cheeks.
“Here I come Lan Zhan, I hope you can ever forgive me.”
When the wave of resentment came, it felt different than Wei Ying had assumed.
He had assumed it would rip his body into thousands of shreds.
He had assumed it would make him feel like he was burned and eaten alive.
He had assumed it would be an oppressive force taking all his life force from him.
But instead, all the energy crawled into his body, seeking a spot where it could be assembled and bundled – it didn’t want to be destroyed.
In consequence it didn’t destroy him either, it made him a vessel once again – like he had been before he had created the seal.
And instead of killing him off with the sheer amount of resentment that now swam around in his body, it formed something that felt like a golden core inside him.
He lived.
A-Yuan survived too. Still looking sick and weak, but breathing nonetheless.
And –
Wei Ying couldn’t believe his eyes.
Before him sat the one person he had been dying to meet.
Lan Zhan.
Ok, maybe he was dead.
“…Wei…Ying?”
Hearing the mirage in front of him speaking, Wei Ying tumbled forward, throwing an arm around Lan Zhans neck, crying into the mans neck as he pulled himself closer, nearly squishing A-Yuan between them.
“I am so, so sorry Lan Zhan, I misunderstood you – I take everything back. You were right, I was wrong – with everything. Please forgive my insolence!”
Wei Ying could feel Lan Zhan freezing up, could feel him flinch, then he felt something wet on his arm. The arm that he was embracing Lan Zhan with.
Before Lan Zhan could say anything, Wei Ying moved himself away and took Lan Zhan in.
He was only clad in sleeping wear. He was looking pale and sweaty. He didn’t smell like sandalwood like usually, instead he smelled of blood and bitter medicine. And there was blood on Wei Yings arms. Meaning that blood had to have seeped through Lan Zhan’s robe in his back and neck.
In fact Lan Zhan looked like he should be in a med bay instead of sitting around in the dirty burial mounts where his wounds could infect.
“Lan Zhan, I-”
This time Lan Zhan cut him off. “Minor wound. Don’t worry.”
Wei Ying went numb.
Wait.
The blood had come from Lan Zhans back and neck, right? Had these heartless Gusu People really whipped him thirty-three times? If so, how had he survived that?
But that much was clear as day: if Lan Zhan could bleed then he must be alive – in consequence both of them were alive. And on burial mount. During a siege on nonother than him – Wei Wuxian the cultivator who became the devil.
Wait, that actually brought forth many more questions. For example: how had Lan Zhan even gotten here? He didn’t look like he had participated in the siege after all.
Was that something the seal had pulled off? Some sort of ‘fulfilling your last wish’ joke?
“Wangji.” The shocked voice behind Land Zhan riled Wei Ying up.
How could Lan Xichen permit his brother to be punished this much and then act worried only a bit later!?
Without thinking about it, Wei Ying rose up and moved around Lan Zhan to block him from his brothers view.
“Wangji, I have already seen you. And even if I don’t know how you got here, please listen to reason and come here. You have been punished enough. Ask yourself – is this worth all your pain?”
Wei Ying was indignified at Lan Xichen ignoring him like this, but unwillingly he saw that Lan Xichen had a point in his words.
After all this was a siege against Wei Ying. And if Lan Zhan sided with him – should he ever do so – he would be taken down as well. And that was not at all acceptable.
Especially not now that Wei Ying was aware of how good and noble Lan Zhan truly was.
“Brother, Wei Ying is good.”
Wei Ying froze. Lan Zhan sounded like he was accusing his brother and the rest of the cultivators for having pushed Wei Ying into a corner – he spoke like he saw no wrongdoings in Wei Yings actions – like he believes Wei Ying was just exercising his right to defend himself and live. Like Wei Ying was just using the wrong means for the correct causes.
“Wangji!”
“I am impressed, how did you manage to twist the esteemed Hanguang-Jun like that? Since when have you two been this close?”
When Jiang Wangji stepped in, Zidian crackling in his hand, Lan Zhan stepped besides Wei Ying, showing no sign of intending to justify anything or rectify any accusations Wei Yings brother had made.
Wei Ying himself didn’t bother with his brothers’ words either. Instead, he just found himself puzzled as to why the vengeful spirits seemed to have been destroyed by the few cultivators in front of them.
They shouldn’t have been that weak.
And no one other than him should have been able to call them back – and he definitely hat not done so.
“Wangji, please.” Never had anyone seen Lan Xichen this pleading. “Return home with me. You shouldn’t let your feelings lead you onto the wrong path.”
“Not the wrong path.” Lan Zhans tone was harsh, unforgiving. “My choices.”
“Then go down with Wei Wuxian for all I care!” Jiang Cheng flicked his wrist and like a snake, Zidian shot forward.
It didn’t take a genius to see that Lan Zhan wouldn’t be able to dodge. He couldn’t block either. He had no weapon.
Without thinking Wei Ying moved, standing in between the whip and Lan Zhan, letting his back being frayed open as he faced Lan Zhan – shielding A-Yuan and Lan Zhan.
“Wei Ying!” Lan Zhan made a move to reach for Wei Ying to stabilize him, but with his injuries the movement was too fast, forcing him back to his knees.
It had been a wonder for Lan Zhan to be able to stand in the first place anyway.
“Wangji!” While Lan Xichen only called out for his brother, Wei Ying went down with him, hugging the other man to his chest to help him take weight off his back. A-Yuan now lying across Wei Yings legs as he kept his back turned to his enemies so he could adjust Lan Zhans posture.
“It’s enough Lan Zhan. I understand. But that won’t change my crimes anymore. I will be convicted for them, so don’t involve yourself anymore. Thirty-three lashes are enough. I know you are the most righteous person in this world, but you shouldn’t have to suffer for my wrongdoings. Please don’t let your morals cause your death.”
“Don’t act like the generous hero here!”
A second lash came in, crackling down on Wei Yings back, but Wei Ying didn’t turn. He only looked at Lan Zhan. Trying to convince him of his words.
“Sect leader Jiang, let me handle this, please.” Lan Xichen spoke up, earning a huff from Jiang Cheng but the whip-lashes indeed stopped.
“Wei Wuxian, please let Wangji go. He has suffered enough on your accord.”
“Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan’s soft tone shocked all present people equally – just for very different reasons.
Nie Mingjue, who seemed to have been able to avoid qi deviation, was pretty sure that Lan Qiren would go into qi diviation pretty soon too. Now that he had heard the absolute devotion in Lan Wangjis voice, he suddenly understood why Lan Wagji and Wei Wuxian had continuously fought among themselves during the sunshot campaign. He may have been a savage man in his nature, but he wasn’t stupid. He could differentiate between fights caused by being too different and fights caused by emotional involvement and worry. He now understood their relationship to be of the second nature, not the first one like the world had always assumed.
Su She on the other hand saw the man he had assumed to be incapable of producing any positive emotion, an arrogant block of ice, speak as though he was trying to convey all his thoughts and feelings in just one name. And he remembered. Back then, when the Gusu Lan disciples had fought the waterborne abyss, Wei Ying had dived down to rescue Su She from said abyss. And when Wei Wuxian had been at risk of sinking as well, Lan Wangji had swoped down and dragged them both up even though that was just abut the most dangerous thing he could have done. Su She felt his insides go cold. Seemingly Lan Wangji had been all about Wei Wuxian even back then when they were all just kids – his weakness had never been studies or fighting, it had always been another man.
Jiang Cheng surprised himself: he couldn’t help but feel jealous. He suddenly saw how his own bond with Wei Ying had broken apart while Lan Zhan had managed to stick around even though his situation hadn’t been much different for Jiang Cheng’s own. It was an eye-opener. After all Jiang Cheng had faulted his brother for everything while Lan Wangji seemed to have chosen to believe in Wei Ying. Maybe this siege could have been avoided, had he chosen to have faith in his brother and given him backing instead of forcing him to go rouge.
Lan Xichen, in comparison to all others, was the only one who went downright pale. He could see his brothers love for Wei Wuxian so clearly, that he was sure everyone else would notice it as well. On top of that he saw his brother being more than just willing to die for his love. Right here. Right now.
“Lan Zhan, please don’t do this to me. Don’t make me watch you die.”
Even more than before, the surrounding people underwent sudden enlightenment.
Jiang Cheng’s reaction was immediate. He paled. He had never known his brother to be gay.
Nie Mingjue facepalmed. No wonder had that guy always flirted with every woman but never started anything. He had already suspected Wei Wuxian to be asexual during the war, but this? Yea, that certainly explained a lot.
Su She was more extreme in his reaction. He was simply and downright disgusted. But then again, he wasn’t surprised. Looking back at how Wei Wuxian had always clung to Lan Wangji nothing else would make sense as explanation. Wei Wuxian had wasted more breaths and eye battings at Lan Zhan than all the females around them. It was still a revolting discovery though – especially when Su She thought about the fact that Wei Ying had actually seen him naked once.
Lan Xichens stomach churned for another reason. So his brothers love wasn’t one sided. But even though this wasn’t intuitive: this actually made nothing better. Wei Wuxian would find his death after all. What about his brother then?
“Wei Ying.” I was amazing how Lan Zhan managed to convey so many things with just his name. Wei Ying found himself smiling even in this situation.
“’Then don’t make watch you die’? Aren’t you just too sweet?” Wei Wuxian belatedly noticed his tongue slipping up, but as always, he couldn’t stop his tongue anymore. “Well then lets both live happily ever after with our son?”
Before anyone could react to the ‘son-comment’, a sudden burst of resentful energy washed over them.
The destroyed stygian tiger seal had set the corpses into beast-mode after all.
The onlookers of the Lan Zhan-Wei Ying-scene turned, getting ready to fight.
Wei Ying lifted his flute as well, preparing for a draining attempt at subduing the corpses while moving A-Yuan off his lap.
“Wei Ying!” Lan Zhan reached for Wei Yings wrist as he stood up.
“Lan Zhan, please let me go, I am the only one who can call them back.” Wei Ying shook his wrist lightly, but Lan Zhan didn’t let go of him.
“Will you live?” Lan Zhan looked at him seriously. His eyes intense.
“Good question, I don’t know.” Wei Ying gave Lan Zhan an easy smile, trying to keep the mood light. “But if I do nothing, we will both die. We all will.”
Lan Zhan remained unmoving at first, then he reluctantly let Wei Ying go.
“Thank you for your trust.” Wei Ying gave another smile and turned to face the corpses. He let his senses reach out and tried to sense in what areas of the mount the corpses still roamed free.
The answer was quite frustrating: Everywhere.
Taking a deep breath – drawing all the dark energy in his body outside and into his breath – he started blowing air into the instrument.
The quickest cultivators ahead of him immediately turned towards him. Nie Mingjue, Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen attacked Wei Ying without second thought – assuming he was trying to aid and coordinate the corpses. A moment later Su She started playing some attack music on his gequin.
The other cultivators remained still and unmoving, still facing the front so that they could see the incoming corpses and hold them off, while the others dealt with the Yiling patriarch.
Wei Ying made no attempt to defend himself, he even closed his eyes as he continued playing a connecting melody – trying to tie the corpses energies into a single string so he could calm them all in one go later on.
But his goals weren’t visible to his attackers, so Jiang Cheng – the only one who could deal physical damage effectively from the distance – lashed out with his Zidian first – attempting to stop Wei Ying from whatever he was trying to do.
His plan didn’t work out though. Lan Zhan caught the whip without hesitation, letting his hand be seared and his body be shocked. He nearly dropped to the ground again – after all standing and fighting weren’t exactly a piece of cake after those thirty-three disciplinary whip lashes.
But he remained standing, showing the incoming attackers a straight up glare for daring to attack his beloved one.
In the end, Lan Xichen was the one who saw that his brother would protect Wei Ying until the bitter end or die trying – so he swooped in and fought off Nie Mingjue and Su She while Lan Zhan kept holding onto Zidian, hereby immobilizing Jiang Cheng until the man finally gave in and retracted the whip.
Lan Xichen still remeined standing in front of his brother and Wei Wuxian – not at all liking the fact that he had to defend a mass murderer, but he would gladly do so for now if that meant his brother got to live.
“I am done. I can deal with them.”
Surprised at Wei Wuxians tone Lan Xichen threw a single glance at the black clad man. He was smiling at Lan Zhan.
“How?” Lan Xichen didn’t miss out on the fact that his brother by no way doubted Wei Wuxian, in fact his brother seemed worried about the man at most.
“A secret melody.” Wei Ying winked at Lan Zhan. “It has been playing in my head whenever I needed to calm down – and let me tell you: it works miraculously well!”
Lan Zhan gave Wei Ying a questioning look but let the vague answer pass anyway.
“Go.”
“I will.” With another smile Wei Ying passed by the Lan brothers and all other cultivators around them – except Lan Zhan they all tailed him with suspicious glances.
Wei Ying didn’t care though. He was used to mistrust. Besides, if he wanted to calm those corpses down, he couldn’t let his mind be disturbed.
So, he stayed serene, thinking of the music in his heart, closed his eyes and started playing.
Behind him Lan Zhan wavered, his eyes shooting open as he had to steady himself against a boulder.
That was Wangxian – the song he had written for Wei Ying! And as far as he knew, he only hummed it to Wei Ying once while said man wasn’t even fully aware.
How had Wei Ying remembered the notes?
And-
His heart jumped. Wei Ying remembered. Wei Ying had said this song had clamed him when he needed it. Wei Ying must have carried this song in his heart.
And most importantly: he used it to calm down the corpses around them – showing that his heart must have a strong attachment which he could write onto the corpses by plying the song.
Lan Zhan burst with love for this man.
He couldn’t stand by, he brushed his worried brother off, who had attempted to steady him, walked straight at Su She, took the guys gequin and joined Wei Ying – on his way already starting to play his own song. Effectively shutting Su She’s screaming about Lan Zhan’s audacity to steal his instrument up.
The cultivators could only watch on in bewilderment as they witnessed Lan Zhan and Wei Ying duetting a song all of them had never heard before.
It was a song these two obviously shared in between themselves.
And watching it was nearly scary: Lan Zhan was obviously boosting the effect Wei Yings music had, his pure cultivation nourishing Wei Yings demonic one.
One after another the corpses were put to rest.
Not only did they lose all life, they even sank right back into the earth, vanishing like they had never been there.
The duo played the song twice until all corpses were subdued, the resentful energy in the air fading – just like the resentful energy within Wei Ying and the energy all-in-all within Lan Zhan.
Shortly after having played the last note, Wei Ying wavered and fell unconscious. Lan Zhan caught him and went down with him, landing straight on the ground with his arms wrapped around Wei Ying.
When the other cultivators closed in in them, Lan Zhan glared at them – warning them not to make a wrong move.
And that was how – against all intuitions – Lan Xichen ended up bringing the Yiling patriarch to Gusu. Otherwise, his brother wouldn’t have gone back there for treatment himself.
In fact, because of that, the remnants of the siege, the rests of the major sects and a few others, had come together to discuss what should be done from here on.
Most of them still wanted the Yiling patriarch dead and Lan Wangji punished until he dropped dead, but there were also those who suddenly weren’t in favor of destroying Wei Ying anymore.
Like Nie Mingjue – he had seen how little evil intent had been inside Wei Wuxians eyes after he wasn’t threatened by them anymore. He had been there when Wei Wuxian had called the corpses off, clearly defending all of them even though he could simply have escaped alone. So, if they left Wei Wuxian alone, he probably wouldn’t be an issue at all.
Jiang Cheng was the same. Now that someone else had stepped up for his brother, he couldn’t really remain standing against him. And even if he couldn’t forgive him for killing his sister and her husband, making Wei Ying live and take responsibility would probably be more satisfying than just killing him once anyway. Besides, he had not forgotten his jealousy from before either. He wasn’t blind – he wanted his brother around. He had just denied that up until now – all because of his stupid pride.
Lan Xichen opposed a severe punishment as well – even if he only did so to keep his brother alive and in the best case scenario also allow him a live with his love.
Naturally there also where those who wouldn’t listen. Su She and Jin Guangyao wanted to execute a punishment ‘to set an example’, while others wanted ‘the evil removed from the word’ – all the while not knowing, that said evil was currently inside the Gusu med bay, arguing with Lan Zhan.
“Stop being so petty! I know you hate others touching you but the head doctor isn’t here right now and your bandages must be soaked if your clothes look like that! Let me change them already!”
“Wei Ying-” It was a warning, clearly, but Wei Ying couldn’t have cared less. “No, you are being unreasonable. Do you want your wounds to infect?” Wei Ying crossed his arms, looking impatient. “Or are you afraid of letting me see your wounds?”
Lan Zhan didn’t answer.
“Whatever it is Lan Zhan, get over it and let me help you. Please. I want to do at least that much after all the trouble I caused you.”
Lan Zhan looked like he still wanted to say ‘no’, but he didn’t. He was clearly affected by Wei Yings display of guilt.
“Besides now that you are my husband it is my duty to take care of you!” Wei Ying realized what he has said belatedly once again. Well, he just had to go and ruin it, right? Him and his loose tongue. He really should get rid of that flirting habit.
“Husband?” Lan Zhan looked deadpanned. His voice devoid of anything. But contrary to his expression, his eyes had taken on a dark sparkle.
Was he angry? Or maybe just on the way to getting riled up like when they were teenagers?
Suddenly very much desiring to tease Lan Zhan like he had done when they were young Wei Ying gave an enthusiastic nod, speaking enthusiastically. “Yes, husband! I mean you saved me, right? With that I am the damsel in distress, and you are my prince – thus a wedding is in order, right?” Wei Ying winked at Lan Zhan, puckering his lips in an act of expecting a kiss before he added a sweet sounding, “Besides we have a son already. And A-Yuan remembers what I said back then. Plus he said I was looking at you like a mommy looks at a daddy, so-“
Ah yes, there it was: Wei Yings teasing backfiring on him. He had not watched his mouth and was punished for it. And he most definitely had to fix that. As in right now.
“But then again, forget it, what do kids know?” Laughing it off Wei Ying gave Lan Zhan a small shove, making him sit down on one of the beds in the med bay, acting as naturally as he could, as he acted like he still only cared about changing Lan Zhans bandages.
“Children are honest. You are not.”
Surprised Lan Zhan would actually say such a thing, Wei Ying stilled his hands before they could come into contact with Lan Zhans robes.
“What is that supposed to mean? I will have you know that I am a very serious, very honest guy. That is why everyone likes me!” Wei Ying paused, then signed and corrected himself. “Ok, why everyone liked me. Past tense. The demonic cultivation gave my image a little blow.”
“Wei Ying?” Asking his ‘Are you ok?’ in the manner that was so much like him, Lan Zhan looked at Wei Ying in mild worry. He did not like the undertone Wei Ying had just used.
“Ah, never mind. It is too bothersome to constantly be surrounded by people anyway.” Wei Ying closed his eyes. “Besides, most of the people I knew throughout my life and actually liked are gone by now, so…”
Lan Zhan fell silent, not knowing what to tell Wei Ying to make him feel better. Social contacts had never been his forte. That was always more of his brother’s talent.
“But you know Lan Zhan…when I understood that you didn’t hate me, that was good enough. It made me happy.”
Lan Zhan’s eyes widened. “Never hated Wei Ying.”
“I know that now.” Wei Ying signed, this time reaching for Lan Zhan’s robes for real. “But I didn’t get that for a long time. In fact, when we were young, I thought you at least liked me a bit but as time passed, I was surer and surer that you hated me for acting the way I acted, saying the things I said and in short, well just hated me being me.” Wei Ying undid the front of Lan Zhan’s belt, careful not to rip at it in case it would pull the fabric of Lan Zhan’s cloths and drag them over his wounds or the bandages. “But at burial mount I saw a memory of the stygian tiger seal. It showed me how you defended me and cared for me after the last battle before the siege.”
“You didn’t remember that?” Lan Zhan sounded surprised, he even sounded a bit pained.
“No, sorry. My cultivation tends to block things out whenever I am going through phases where I feel dark emotions very strongly.” Throwing the belts aside as their backs where bloodied, Wei Ying bent down a bit more so he could start taking Lan Zhan’s robes off.
“How much do you remember now?” Lan Zhan caught Wei Yings hands, not letting him touch his clothes any further.
“Well, you saved me, cared for my wounds, spoke some words I do not recall but remember to be spoken softly and then you were led away for-” Wei Ying nodded at Lan Zhan’s robes, clearly meaning the punishment. “And now do me a favor and set my hands free, I need them to undress you.”
“Don’t.” Lan Zhan’s voice sounded strained – quite apparently so.
“Oh, come on Lan Zhan, I already undid your belt, so we are halfway there anyway. Besides, it’s not like I will peel you out of your pants.”
Apparently, Lan Zhan didn’t take it the humorous way. His grasp on Wei Ying tightened even more.
“I will wait for the doctor.”
“You don’t trust me to do this properly, do you?” Wei Ying suddenly had lost all jokes and fun comments. He didn’t know why, but he was growing angry – the resentful energy escaping his body made that quite noticeable for Lan Zhan as well.
“Wei Ying-” That was a ‘no, that is not the issue’, a ‘I trust you’, an ‘I am sorry if I offended you’ – but Wei Ying wasn’t willing to listen. With Lan Zhan things always had to end like that. Ever since he had crawled back out of the burial mounts.
“Ok then, what is it if that’s not the issue? And don’t tell me it’s your hatred for touching as long you would let another touch you.” Wei Ying tried to pull himself free, but Lan Zhan didn’t let go of him. And Lan Zhan had always been stronger than Wei Ying.
Wei Ying still tried to free himself two more times. All the while Lan Zhan remained quiet, not willing to tell the truth.
“Yiling Patriarch!” Hearing the call of his title, Wei Ying finally managed to pull himself free, quickly using the chance to distance himself from Lan Zhan.
“Yes?”
“The child has woken up. He wants to see you.”
Wei Ying immediately forgot his anger, rushing towards where he knew A-Yuan to rest.
The boy had recuperated quite well. His fever had gone down, he had been clad in new clothes – and even through they sadly were the white mourning robes of the Gusu Lan sect and not something pretty, they were at the very least clean. A-Yuan had even had been provided with a few snacks.
By the time A-Yuan had finished them and gone back to sleep – strangely not asking for anyone of the Wens, which caused Wei Ying quite a few worries, even if it may just have been a trauma from the fever – the doctor had already changed Lan Zhan’s bandages.
That is how he ended in this situation: As he went back to join Lan Zhan again, feeling like he should inform him about A-Yuan’s health, the female doctor – who had just finished her work on Lan Zhan and clothed the man again – went straight up towards him and demanded him to take off his coat so she could change the bandage on his arm. The gash Lan Xichen had left there was quite nasty and bled quite a lot after all.
Not at all thinking about what he was doing, he undressed his clothes right on the spot – until he was only left with his pants.
“You aren’t exactly shy, are you?” The doctor smiled as she got to work.
“Me? No, I have never been the shy type.” Wei Ying send a semi-heartfelt glare into Lan Zhan’s direction, wanting to add a ‘not like the statue over there’ – he was taking the whole bandaging affair quite personally – but ended up with his words stuck in his throat.
Lan Zhan was looking straight at them – or him to be exact. With quite dark eyes. The look was close to an angry one but somehow different.
Anyhow, it went straight to Wei Yings gut, setting something alive in there.
Especially since Lan Zhan had his eyes everywhere but on Wei Yings eyes – he didn’t even know he had been caught staring.
“Oh, what is this? I didn’t notice it before when I wrapped you up for the first time.” The doctor ran a hand along the burn-mark on his chest. “It looks like the Qishan Wen sects coat of arms.”
“That’s because it is their coat of arms.” Wei Ying scratched his head, looking down at his own chest. “I got that mark when I pushed a girl out of the way. I haven’t seen her since though.”
“Do you want me to get you a cream for that? It may lighten up the scar.”
“That isn’t necessary. It has been healed for many years now anyway. Besides, I have so many scars that it doesn’t matter if this one if visible or not.”
“I see.” The doctor smiled. Her mien was a tat bit sad. “Take more care of yourself in the future. Your skin may heal but the tissue will never be the same once it was hurt that deeply.”
“Yes doctor!” Smiling in an easygoing way, Wei Ying watched the doctor disappear, then looked back at Lan Zhan, surprised to find him standing nearly directly in front of him.
“What is it?”
“When did you get so many scars?”
Blinking at Lan Zhan’s question, Wei Ying looked down at himself. “It’s not that bad you know.”
“There were a lot less.” Wei Ying looked up again, starring into Lan Zhan’s eyes.
“What? When did you ever see me naked before!”
Lan Zhan remained silent, instead just continuing to look at every single scar, his gaze hardening when his eyes found the burn mark on Wi Yings chest.
“You should have accepted that cream.”
“You sound like you really hate that scar.” Wei Ying laughed a bit, lifting his hand to feel over the scar. His skin had a strange texture there – much rougher and harder.
“I do.”
Surprised at Lan Zhan not only hating a scar, that was not even on his own body, and even admitting to it, Wei Ying looked at Lan Zhan again, this time moving into his line of sight so that Lan Zhan’s eyes meet his own instead of the scar. “What? Why? Didn’t we agree back then that it was better for me to have it, than for MianMian to have it on her face?”
Lan Zhan remained silent.
“Hey, I am talking to you! You are being rude, you know!” Making a scene was one of Wei Yings strongest suits, so he went and acted spoiled – just like he had done so many times before.
“Besides, I don’t see why you would hate something I got because I was selfless for once!”
“That is not the problem.”
Not having expected that Lan Zhan would actually entertain him by letting himself be teased, Wei Ying smirked, forming yet another glorious plan inside his head.
“Well, what is the problem then? The one who I got the scar for?” He wiggled his eyebrows, hinting how he had teased Lan Zhan for liking MianMian back then in the cave of the tortoise of slaughter. “Ah Lan Zhan, rest assured, I never did and never will love MianMian, she is all yours.” He snickered seeing how Lan Zhan’s face shifted into something akin to annoyance.
“Oh and one more secret-” Deciding to add another layer to the teasing, Wei Ying stood straight, coming closer and closer to Lan Zhan’s face before he finally moved to the side a bit and whispered straight into the other mans ears. “-I would have acted the same way if you were the one about to be burned, we can’t have the most beautiful cultivator disfigured, can we?”
Instead of getting Lan Zhan to turn bashful or turn red or anything else that was cute, Wei Ying was shocked to see Lan Zhan flinch.
He immediately felt something wasn’t right. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have come that close to you. Or said that. Or done whatever I did wrong.”
Wei Ying stepped backwards, lifting his hands upwards in a show of ‘I give up, it was my fault’.. Lan Zhan didn’t react. Now this was bad.
“Lan Zhan? What is it? Talk to me please?”
Lan Zhan turned around and went back to the bed, Wei Ying could see how he was forcing himself to walk straight and upright. It must have been hurting his back more than anyone else would ever been able to bear. Or at least more than Wei Ying himself could have been able to bear.
“Lan Zhan, please don’t ignore me, ok? You know I say and do a lot of things, but I don’t mean them, so please-” As Wei Ying hurried after him, completely disregarding the fact that he was still half naked, Lan Zhan let out a shaky breath.
“That is also a problem, yes.”
Wei Ying froze. Just what had he done to mess up this badly? Before Lan Zhan had often been angry at him, but the silent treatment was new – and he did not like it, not at all.
“Lan Zhan, you are making me feel disliked again, I-”
“Disliked?” Even though Wei Ying had only tried to fix the situation by telling Lan Zhan what kind of misunderstanding would come from this, he seemed to have worsened it all. Lan Zhan was definitely in a bad mood now.
“Ok sorry Lan Zhan, I didn’t think about what I just said, forget it. I just-” Wei Ying broke off. What had he wanted? Why were things this complicated right now anyway?
“You know Lan Zhan, I just like you, so I want to tease you, I am sorry.” Giving up, Wei Ying rubbed his face, not knowing how else he should tell Lan Zhan that he was someone he regarded highly and had always wanted to be friends with. He just couldn’t control his tongue. But that changed non of his feelings.
“Do not say things you do not mean.”
“But I do mean it!” Exasperated Wei Ying found himself, for the first time ever, thinking Lan Zhan to be blockheaded and stupid. What would it take for Lan Zhan to take him serious for once? Sure, he joked around a lot but even he had his honest moments! Then it hit him, a genius idea.
“I know what to do to show you the truth of my words!” Rushing past Lan Zhan, Wei Ying went to the doctors table, snatched a paper and a brush plus the liquid ink, and returned to Lan Zhan.
In front of Lan Zhan Wei Ying ripped a piece of the paper off and started to write something onto it. “There! A truth-talisman! I developed it so A-Yuan couldn’t lie to me whenever I asked whether or not he had brushed his teeth!”
Lan Zhan gave him an empty stare, clearly not believing him – once again.
So, Wei Ying took the liberty to take Lan Zhan’s hand and put the makeshift-talisman on top of his palm.
Then he asked a question, his eyes glinted mischievously. “I presented you with two rabbits back in our teen days. Did you like them?”
“Yes.” Lan Zhan’s eyes widened hearing his own answer, his ears started to turn pink in embarrassment.
“See, you can’t lie with that talisman!” Wei Ying snickered at Lan Zhan before taking the paper into his own hands again. “And now ask me all questions you want an honest answer to, I won’t be able to lie or evade the question for once so use this chance.”
And Lan Zhan did. It was nearly a surprise with him being such a goody-two-shoes.
“Did or do you like MianMian?”
Wei Ying laughed; Lan Zhan was way too cute asking that question even though the answer was so obvious. “No.”
“Why did you push her aside then?”
“Because I didn’t what her face to be marred.”
“Would you have done that for everyone else too?”
“Hell no” Wei Ying made a face. For all he cared Wen Chao for example could gladly have been burned. And Jiang Cheng would have had to save his ass himself, sorry not sorry, but being saved was a sweet-person-privilege not an angry-person-privilege.
“Then why did you say you would have taken that burn for me then?”
“Because you being burned would absolutely not be an option – ever. It was bad enough that the Wen sect dared to break your leg back then. I was already angry enough at them for that.” Wei Ying huffed, in fact, yes, his answer reminded him just how angry he had been back then. He would gladly have broken Wen Chaos legs as thank-you back then.
Lan Zhan fell quiet for a moment.
Wei Ying moved his head to the side, looking puzzled. “Wait, aren’t you going to ask me if I like you? I thought that was what you didn’t believe coming from me first and foremost.”
Lan Zhan hesitated for a moment. He didn’t know if the answer to that question would make him happy, even if Wei Ying did indeed like him as friend.
“Come on Lan Zhan, just ask me. Or else I will be sad because you will never believe me that I like you.”
Lan Zhan half-signed, finally giving in. “Fine. Do you like me?”
“I do. You always have been and always will be my favorite person.” At first Wei Ying smiled, glad to finally be asked the important question, but as he heard himself answer he nearly suffered a heart attack.
What was that with the favorite person? Hey, hey, the talisman was supposed to make him say the absolute truth – how did something that mushy come out?
And how could Lan Zhan always have been his favorite person when at some point his shijie had been around as well?
Or…wait a minute – the talisman was making him say the truth.
Wei Ying blinked. He had just realized he was seriously stupid.
He liked Lan Zhan more than his siter because he wasn’t just a friend.
Only now did he noticed how much more of his time he had always spend on Lan Zhan than on all others – girls included.
And he had always cared about Lan Zhan’s opinion more than anyone else’s.
Plus, he had only been this fierce in all his fights and arguments with Lan Zhan because he assumed Lan Zhan wanted to punish him for his ways or condemned him and that was the absolute last thing, he wanted Lan Zhan to desire when it came to himself.
So yes, he was in love with Lan Zhan. Which was kind of suboptimal.
Couldn’t he at least have fallen for someone who might like him back one day? Fate really was cruel.
“Do not lie.”
“Lan Zhan, I literally can’t lie right now!” Ah, good, Lan Zhan seemed to be stupid in this area – just like Wei Ying himself. He hadn’t realized what Wei Yings words had meant. Lucky him – that spared him the rejection and the awkward atmosphere afterwards – plus the heartbreak. Wei Ying however still averted his eyes, sitting down on the floor leaning back with his face directed at the roof instead of at Lan Zhan – who was seated on the bed across from him.
“You make it sound like you love me.” Ok correction: Lan Zhan was neither obvious nor stupid in this area. But he was stupid in another area. He said his words as statement, not as question: meaning Wei Ying could evade the truth since he frankly speaking would not be lying.
“Well I guess-” Wei Ying couldn’t help himself and sneaked a glance at Lan Zhan, wanting to see how Lan Zhan may or may not take a confession – just as theoretical knowledge. He however broke off when he saw Lan Zhan’s Face shifting through dozens of emotions.
“Are you ok?” Asking Lan Zhan that question had come naturally to him but since he was the one holding the talisman and not Lan Zhan, he may not get an honest answer anyway, even if he asked him. Then again Lan Zhan had probably not lied once in bis life. After all it was against the Gusu Lans sects rules.
“Wei Ying, put the talisman aside if you don’t want to tell me. Otherwise, I will ask.” Confused about what Lan Zhan was even talking about – especially since he had just completely ignored Wei Yings question, which could be counted as rude, which in turn would be against the Gusu Lan sect rules – Wei Ying failed to put the talisman aside.
“Wei Ying, did you ever like someone?”
“Yes.”
“Me too.” Now that Lan Zhan had already admitted that much, Wei Ying suddenly had the desire to turn tables – especially since Lan Zahn’s last question for him had hit too close to home. Thus, he quickly took the talisman and slapped it into Lan Zhan’s lap.
“How many people did you like in your life Lan Zhan? Romantically I mean.”
“One.” As Lan Zhan hadn’t been quick enough to get rid of the talisman, he was forced to answer. Even if he was visibly not comfortable with having been made to admit that.
Wei Ying decided to make it up to him with a bit of his own honesty. “Me too. I only loved one person as well. Even though it took me half my life to figure that out.”
Saying it out loud was kind of embarrassing but seeing Lan Zhan’s surprised reaction made it worth it.
And suddenly Wei Ying went devil-may-care. He wanted to know who the lucky one was, who Lan Zhan was in love with, even if he had to admit his own feelings in turn. He was sure Lan Zhan would be too nice to force him out of his life.
Good thing that Lan Zhan was still holding the talisman.
And yes, Wei Ying knew fully well that Lan Zhan would be angry at him for drawing the next bit of information out of him – but whatever, he was a fool in love so he was allowed to do stupid things.
“Who is the one you love?”
Wei Ying had never seen Lan Zhan cast a silencing spell this quickly. Especially not on himself.
“That is cheating!”
Lan Zhan gave Wei Ying a that-question-was-off-limits-look. Wei Ying pouted.
“Fine, fine. Then another question, ok?”
Lan Zhan didn’t lift the silencing spell, seemingly afraid of the prior questions answer tumbling past his lips – or he was simply burdened with serious trust issues now.
“Come on Lan Zhan, I promise to be good. I won’t pull such a trick again. I will even tell you something more intimate about me, that you want to know as apology. So, pretty please, forgive me?” Trying his best to look cute and lovable, Wei Ying gave Lan Zhan the puppy dog eyes – which was ironic given Wei Yings fear of dogs.
But Lan Zhan remained unmoved.
So, Wei Ying did the only thing he thought to be possible.
He played the game with and against himself to get back on Lan Zhan’s good side.
“Did you ever attempt serious advances at someone other the one you loved?” Quickly snatching the talisman from Lan Zhan, Wei Ying made himself force-answer the truth.
And he was quite glad he added the ‘except the one you loved’ clause – after all he was quite sure he had been serious to a certain degree when flirting with Lan Zhan at times. “No.”
Putting the talisman back into Lan Zhans lap, Wei Ying smiled again, trying to get Lan Zhan to loosen up. “There you have it, I am actually quite a sensible man. So please talk to me again?”
But instead of talking to him right away, Lan Zhan seemed to progress what he had just heard first. Then he picked up the talisman again and pushed it back at Wei Ying before lifting his silencing spell and asking his next question – quite obviously happy that the answer he had priorly hidden had not tumbled out along with the question.
“Did you ever kiss someone?”
To say Wei Ying was shocked at such an intimate question would have been a grand understatement but given the fact that he was holding the talisman, he had to answer. And actually, he was surprised at his own answer – wasn’t it a lie after all? “No.”
Lan Zhan froze. “You lied. How is that possible?”
Wei Ying, still under the effect of the talisman, answered right back. “I didn’t and it isn’t. I never kissed anyone.” Well ok, as long as he said it like that it was true. After all he had not done the kissing – he had been kissed.
Wei Ying had never seen Lan Zhan look so furious as he did right now. “Do not lie to me. I know you have kissed someone before.”
“Lan Zhan I really can’t lie right now as long as you ask me something! Besides, how would you know whether or not I had-” Wei Ying broke off. Wait, wait, wait. The only kiss he had had and thus the only kiss Lan Zhan could know of was that one – or rather the series of kisses – that was stolen from him at Phoenix mount. And no one except him and that overly strong girl should have witnessed that. The resentful energy inside him was way to weary of all people to not inform him about another presence had there been one. So that only left…the girl?
Oh. Wait: had that girl gone running around telling everyone about that!?
Well, that made it kind of embarrassing.
Or wait, no, right: After that kiss Wei Ying had meet Lan Zhan and they had talked about kisses. Or rather Wei Ying had told Lan Zhan about how many kisses he had had and teased Lan Zhan about how his lips would probably stay virgin for the rest of his life.
Suddenly Wei Ying had to laugh – so that was what this was about. “Ok, I admit it Lan Zhan, I lied to you back then.” Holding up the truth-talisman to empathize that he was indeed telling the truth right at this moment, Wei Ying smiled even broader, even now still feeling amusement at his teenager self’s way of acting. “Back then at Phoenix mount-”
Wei Ying definitely saw Lan Zhan’s eyes dodge his at that – which was strange. Hadn’t he wanted the truth in the first place after all?
Choosing to ignore that detail, Wei Ying continued with his explanation. “-I told you I had already kissed dozens of people dozens of times, right?”
Watching Lan Zhan turn back towards him, like he had not expected this but something else to be brought up, but now that it was something else than what he had feared, he was interested again, Wei Ying just had to smile again. How could anyone be this cute at Lan Zhan’s age and size?
“Well, my dear Lan Zhan, that was a lie.”
Lan Zhan’s eyes widened once again, suddenly the tip of his ears shone a bright red. “So, your first kiss was…?”
By the Lan Zhan trailed off, Wei Ying couldn’t stop himself from answering anymore. His reflexes of putting the talisman had been too slow and he couldn’t silence himself, so yes, he was in for an embarrassment.
“My first kiss was stolen from me just before I meet you on Phoenix mount. I don’t even know who it was.”
Lan Zhan didn’t move an inch – but the way his eyes suddenly seemed to have turned into deep, dark swirling pools of something powerful, made Wei Yings mouth go dry.
On instinct he licked his lips – not realizing how sensitive his lips seemed to be. His stomach however knew – if that flutter was any indication.
And Lan Zhan, who seemed to be tracking his tongues movement with his eyes, wasn’t helping to ease that feeling inside him either.
So, in order to get his attention somewhere else, he did what he always did. He started to ramble. “Well but you know, it was really strange. You know, I was already cultivation the dark path back then but the resentment inside of me made no move to defend me. Thus the one who kissed me must actually have been someone who the energy knew and knew of that I trusted them.”
Lan Zhan kept starring down at Wei Ying, making the other one’s mind grow even more chaotic, casing Wei Yings rambling to worsen – with the worst part being that Wei Ying still held onto the truth talisman.
“But I didn’t have that many people whom I trusted enough to let them come that close to me. Basically, there were only my shijie, and she wouldn’t have kissed me, just no, besides she loved the peacock back then already – my brother, and oh Lord, believe me, if he was the one who did that I would castrate him, but I think I am safe from that ever being a real danger, considering that he doesn’t know anything about love and will probably be a single for life anyway – and well, then there is…you?”
Wei Ying stopped at that. Wait a minute, did this truth talisman turn him into a detective? First off, he found out with whom he was in love with – and generally even just that he was in love with someone – and now he seemed to be finding out who had stolen his first kiss from him?
But Lan Zhan wouldn’t do something like that, right? After all-
All of Wei Yings thoughts skitter to a halt.
Lan Zhan was no longer sitting on his bed.
He was down on his knees in front of him. His hands on his cheeks. His lips on Wei Yings. And he wasn’t going slow either – in fact he was quite aggressive.
Lan Zhan was devouring Wei Yings mouth. He kept going in for more, not even waiting for Wei Ying to respond to him as he separated their lips by the tiniest fractions to bring them together at another angle just a split second later.
Lan Zhan made sure to move his lips from side to side, giving Wei Ying the feeling of their lips being inseparable even if they weren’t glued into one position.
There was no shyness, no hesitation – just an obvious hunger and passion that did not seem to be like Lan Zhan at all. But it was very much like the heated demanding kisses he had received on Phoenix mount.
So, it had been Lan Zhan!
Suddenly feeling as though the sun had decided to rise from within his body at this exact moment, Wei Ying threw his arms round Lan Zhan’s neck, responding as well as he could with his mind not being able to come up with a single coherent thought or course of action.
But it seemed to do the trick for Lan Zhan. He let out a low growl, his hand leaving Wei Yings face now that Wei Ying was pressing back so fiercely.
Possessively, he slid them down Wei Yings naked sides, one hand grasping his hipbone while the other traveled to his lower back, pulling him flush against Lan Zhan.
Wei Ying felt electrified, his whole body was buzzing. His mind went places that had never been explored before.
“God, I love you, Lan Zhan.” Not even realizing how he has started babbling again just moments after Lan Zhan had started to kiss down his neck, instead of shutting his stupid mouth up, he clutched the talisman – which he still held in his hand – even harder, withering under Lan Zhan’s lips.
But the very heartbeat that the words had come out of his mouth, Lan Zhan stopped his ministrations, lifting his face back up to look at Wei Ying.
To others, Lan Zhan may have looked normal, but to Wei Ying, there was a whole other dimension written over Lan Zhan’s features.
The usually golden suns that were his eyes, had turned into deep rich amber colored honey. And even if his face itself remained pretty much unchanged, his ears were red, his breathing a little quick, his lips parted, and there was a fervor written right onto his soul, which spoke volumes of how much and how long Lan Zhan had been dying to kiss Wei Ying like this.
“Repeat that.” Lan Zhan sounded like he was demanding it and yet was pleading for it at the same time.
And even in his dizziness, Wei Ying understood how fragile this moment was.
So, he loosened his hold around Lan Zhan’s neck – startling the man for a second, probably making him fear that Wei Ying had come back to himself and was filled with regret.
“Don’t let your mind come up with something ridiculous now Lan Zhan.” Speaking oh so lovingly, Wei Ying showed Lan Zhan the talisman once again before he held it to his heart.
“Lan Zhan, Lan Wangji, Hanguang-Jun, you are the love of my life. You have been since I came to Gusu, even if I only got it today.”
Lan Zhan didn’t move, but he was listening. And he was yearning for whatever Wei Ying was willing to give him.
So, Wei Ying decided to make his confession a grant one. Lan Zhan certainly deserved that. “Lan Zhan, you are not only my sun, you are my entire solar system – without you the sky isn’t infinite and the earth has no gravity. You are my oxygen, and I am dying to breath. I will walk to the end of this earth for you, I will go to and through hell if that means I can earn myself a place by your side.” Wei Ying couldn’t help himself, his lips just started smiling on their own accord. “I liked you when I first saw you, standing there in the moonlight with that regal countenance of yours, those all-seeing beautiful eyes of yours and that smooth voice, telling me about all the rules I broke. Then I came to adore you when you sat in class, all serious, and before I knew it, I loved you when you and I were alone in the library – I loved being around you so much that I took more than one month longer to copy all the texts than I would have needed.” Wei Ying gave Lan Zhan a peck to the lips. “And in case you didn’t notice – I flirted with many, but you were the only one I ever gave a present to. These bunnies were like us, weren’t they? A calm and responsible white one and a quirky, troublesome black one. And even they were lovers. We must truly be fated, I-”
Way Ying had no chance to sprout any more words of eternal love.
Lan Zhan had already shut him up, diving in for more and more of the only substance that could drive him mad with desire. “Like you, adore you, love you.” Lan Zhan was whispering against Wei Yings lips, staying so close to them that his lips dragged over Wei Yings as he spoke. “Want you so much. Always have. Back then too.” And suddenly Lan Zhan went even further, licking Wei Yings lips, biting them, pulling them and finally parting them as his tongue infiltrated Wei Yings mouth.
A wanton sound came out of Wei Yings throat, taking both of them by surprise. But while Wei Ying for once nearly fell into the pit of feeling shame, Lan Zhan seemed to have decided that just one of these sounds wasn’t enough.
He quickly turned Wei Ying into an instrument, pulling all his strings, making him use his voice to create all kids of new noises.
“Want to bed Wei Ying.”
These words shot straight down to Wei Yings lower half – not that that part of him hadn’t already come very much alive anyway.
“Want to bed Wei Ying every day.”
Nearly going insane from all the sensations and words, Wei Ying could only throw his head back, letting Lan Zhan do as he pleased as he sucked on his neck, making sure to lay a very visible claim on his beloved.
“Then marry me Lan Zhan, I’ll be the first and lace face you see every day.”
Wei Ying was only half aware of what he was saying, but Lan Zhan made up for Wei Ying’s lacking attention, by searing Wei Yings words into his mind, making sure to hold Wei Ying to them.
“Would Wei Ying want to marry me?” Lan Zhan pulled back after he had created a satisfactory mark, going back to kiss Wei Ying, talking to him at the same time – being cattier now than ever before.
“Yes, of course, I would marry you on the spot if I could. I have loved you for long already, I have no doubt I will love you for the rest of my life.”
Wei Ying kissed Lan Zhan back with an equal amount of passion, sneakily moving his arms while Lan Zhan was drowning in the sensation of his beloved kissing him back with no less affection or passion than he himself felt.
Then suddenly, Lan Zhan felt his robes parting, his belts and outer garments sliding open as Wei Ying moved his hands underneath them.
“But you will have to live with me being naughty and flirting with you all day and night long.”
Lan Zhan had no complaint regarding that.
His world, his life, was not only in love with him, no he wanted to touch him and marry him too – it made something in Lan Zhan roar in triumph. He bend over Wei Ying, covering the others entire sight. Wei Ying softly raked his nails up and down over his bandages.
Surprisingly Lan Zhan couldn’t feel his back at all – it might have been the pain killers or just his drunkenness of what was happening right now, but either way, he saw no reason to hold back,
For once he went against schedule, against plans and the proper order of things, giving himself to his racing heart and pulsing body.
He pushed Wei Ying down onto the floor, ridding himself of his upper and inner garments at the same, leaving him equally clad or rather naked as Wei Ying was.
Wei Ying drank in the sight of him, and even with the bandages, he saw the most perfect man he had ever laid eyes on.
“Gods, how did I land you – what have I ever done to deserve you.” And with that Wei Ying pulled Lan Zhan back down, demanding to be kissed senseless – Lan Zhan gladly obliged.
At least until Wei Ying drew a leg up and – whether accidentally or not – brushed against a rather neglected part of Lan Zhan’s body.
Lan Zhan’s breath came out in a strained puff. “Wei Ying, if you don’t what to be taken right here, right now, I would suggest you stop playing with fire.”
“And what if I do want it?” Wei Ying took a lock of Lan Zhan’s hair and twirled it in between them. “What will you do if I want my husband to make me his in all ways he can?” Traveling up the smooth lock of hair, Wei Ying grasped Lan Zhan’s ribbon. “Oh, and will I have a ribbon like that too after I marry you? I always liked it on you.”
Lan Zhan turned feral, ripping his ribbon off and tying it around Wei Yings wrists, tying him up before hooking Wei Yings bound-up arms around his neck. “You can have my ribbon right now. You are my husband; you are allowed to touch.”
Wei Ying suddenly paled. “Wait! That is what it means!? God, I am sorry for all the times I just touched it and even pulled it off without even thinking about it!”
“Have always loved you, have always loved the feeling and sight of you holding my ribbon, have always wanted you to take it after you knew the meaning.” Lan Zhan’s mouth didn’t stop forming words, making him talk so much that Wei Ying felt tears welling up – Lan Zhan was so obviously so in love with him, that it wrenched his heart.
“I know now. But I won’t take it off again.”
Lan Zhan froze. But then Wei Ying laughed happily, seeing his games being successful for once. “I’ll just straight up keep it. You are mine! Let the world see. You will get my headband in turn!”
“Then hurry up and get your headband.” Lan Zhan kissed Wei Ying again, relishing in the knowledge that whenever he felt like it in the future, he would be able to claim as many kisses as he craved for.
Wei Ying was finally his; Wei Ying had finally come back to Gusu. And this time Lan Zhan would make him stay – giving Wei Ying the life he wanted right her by his side.
Lan Zhan could feel Wei Ying looked arms around his neck pulling him down with even more force, making him feel like suddenly everything in this world had found it’s place.
He had certainly found his. He smiled a rare but honest. “Do you remember the song you played before? To calm the corpses?”
Taken off guard by the question, Wei Ying tried to figure out where this was going as he nodded.
“It is a song I composed for you. I hummed it for you in the Cave of the tortoise of slaughter.”
Wei Ying stopped moving all along, his mouth open, his eyes wide. “You composed that? For me?”
“Yes.” Lan Zhan gave Wei Ying an endearing look. “I not only loved you back then, I was also aware of my feelings.”
“Are you teasing me Lan Zhan!?” Seemingly not believing it, Wei Ying smiled that happy grin of his. “I can’t believe it! Ah wait- you never told me the songs name!”
Lan Zhan nuzzled Wei Ying as he said, “Combine our names.”
“Oh, so wait, the top comes first, right? And with us, you are definitely the top, I am very sure of that much. So it’s Wangxian?”
Lan Zhan couldn’t help but fall even more for the man in his arms. “Yes.”
“Did you compose any more songs dearest?”
Lan Zhan smiled again, completely besotted. “I will play them for you on our wedding night.”
“Then I will take you to Lotus pier for our honeymoon!”
Lan Zhan hummed in agreement, imagining them side by side, clad in red.
He hoped the wedding would be soon.
And that his uncle would not go into qi deviation over this matter.

Despair | XueXiao x Reader
I know. But don’t worry, it’s just angst. Pure angst. I’m sorry if it seems like a little bit of a mess, it’s 4:30am and I’m really tired but I really needed/wanted to finish this. Happy reading💖
WARNING: mentions of severe depression and suicidal thoughts!
Word count: 1.8k
Summary: After their deaths, you’re expected to continue on living. But how can you? You’re so alone now, all alone with your thoughts of despair.
Your eyes scanned the road where many people walked, busy with their daily lives. You watched as couples passed by, then children, then adults, then people who were by themselves, and so on.
Your emotionless face didn’t change as a little girl ran towards you and stopped. She stared at you for a moment, but you looked away giving her no reaction. She took the hint and ran off, but she reminded you of her.
A-Qing.
You shook your head and kept looking ahead, your eyes following each person that passed by. But none of it brought you any solace. It only worsened the ache in your heart. How were you supposed to continue like this? How were you supposed to stay strong? How were you supposed to move through life like this?
You were miserable. The world was so bland and tasteless. The colors were gone, the life was gone, everything that made your day worth living every single day was gone. Just like that, in the blink of an eye, everything had been taken from you.
What could you have done? A lot, actually. There was a lot you could’ve done, but you were just too naive. Things had been great, things had been so perfect… then HE came along. He ruined everything, he took away your happy little family.
What could you do now? Mourn. But it wasn’t enough. Every day was harder to deal with. Every day seemed like a hassle. Everyday was just another miserable reason to join them.
Even now, a full year later, you would still imagine looking up to see them walking towards you. Every time you’d hear your voice, your hope would spike and you’d feel like you’d see them laughing at you. Laughing the way you used to.
But you knew that was all a delusion. There was nothing to fix the void in your heart. There was nothing that could take the pain away. There was nothing that could fix you.
Your eyes fell to the cup in front of you. Your fingers reached around it and picked it up; you saw the liquid swirl inside. It was tea, you’d lost your taste for alcohol a while ago.
Not that it mattered, anything you ate or drank tasted like sand. Whether it was a delicious meal or the best alcohol around. It was all the same to you.
Sweets were also something you avoided. Especially the one Xingchen bought you. You remembered the days where you woke up and found a piece of candy beside you. You’d remember the smile on Xue Yang’s face every time you gave him some. You’d remember the pout on A-Qing’s face when you’d tease her about eating too many.
All of those were just memories. Annoying little memories that never went away. How could you enjoy them, anyway? Everything that brought you joy, was taken away from you.
Your hand touched your chest as the tears pooled in your eyes. Why? Why Xingchen? Why A-Qing? Why… why Xue Yang? He had changed his life around, he’d promised he would bring him back… he never got the chance.
You smiled as you finally saw your home in the distance. It wasn’t the prettiest, but you loved it. You lived there with the people you considered your family.
Xiao Xingchen, Xue Yang, and A-Qing. All three of them meant so much to you. You weren’t even sure when you began to fall in love with Xingchen and Xue Yang, but you didn’t hate it. Neither did they.
Nothing really changed between you three. There was a day where you three sat down and talked about your relationship. It was pleasant to admit your true feelings.
From that day forward, you three had been in a relationship. A-Qing caught it rather quickly, claiming even though she was blind she could practically smell the romance.
She treated you 3 like her family as well. Everything had been so perfect.
You walked in and saw a crying Xue Yang with no Xingchen or A-Qing. You were concerned, terrified even.
“Wh-what happened?” You asked, grabbing his arm. He was a mess, a sobbing mess with a pouch in his hands. “Xue Yang… Xue Yang!”
“(Y-Y/n)...” he murmured, tears steaming down his face.
“Where are they?” You asked, taking his shoulders. “Where are they? WHERE ARE THEY?!” You knew. You just knew.
Xue Yang moved aside and you looked behind him and felt your heart shatter. It almost felt like your heart stopped. In fact, it would’ve been better if it did.
You saw Xingchen laying there, still as a statue. You saw the large slit on his throat and your hand flew to your mouth. Your knees buckled and you fell to the ground, but almost immediately shot up and ran to the man in white.
“XINGCHEN!!” The scream that tore from your lips broke Xue Yang further than he’d already done so himself.
You fell to the ground beside Xingchen and reached out with shaky hands.
“Xi-Xingchen! W-wake up… pl-please. D-don’t le-leave me! Say something! Say s-something Xingchen!”
Xue Yang watched in horror as the words Xingchen cried out, you were crying out now. Your hands were hitting Xingchen’s chest in an attempt to wake him, but it wasn’t possible.
“XIAO XINGCHEN!!! WAKE UP!!!”
You felt arms around you and tried to shove them off, but they were firm.
“I’ll bring him back! I swear!” Xue Yang cried out, wanting any way to soothe your pain. “I swear! I promise you, I’ll bring him back!!”
You had believed him, knowing that he truly meant it. Xue Yang- whatever he’d done- had regretted it and wanted to make it better. He kept you in the dark with most things, but you accepted it, now only having him. Not like it was much different. Unlike Xingchen, you never knew of Xue Yang, so you couldn’t earn him or protect him.
In one day, everything had changed. Your family had been torn apart and you were too terrified to lose the last person you cared so deeply for.
So you believed him and went along with it. You didn’t stay with him, but he visited you every single night. He brought you candy- none of which you ate- and he often brought you food.
One day, Xue Yang didn’t return. You felt immense fear immediately and went out searching for him. You’d heard word that someone- matching Xiao Xingchen‘s description- was seen near Yi city.
Back home?
It didn’t matter. You went back in search of both of them, hoping to find either Xingchen or Xue Yang.
You found Xue Yang.
Dead on the ground, missing one arm, but a piece of candy in the other. It had happened all over again. You’d lost whatever was left of your family.
“Xue Yang? H-hey… Xue Yang…” you said, falling beside him. “Th-this isn’t f-funny. St-stop! Your jokes aren’t funny! Wake up! Wake up right now!” Tears streamed down your face and you let out a pained scream, one that echoed all around you.
You pulled Xue Yang into your arms, unable to handle what had just happened. His blood stained your clothes but you didn’t care.
When did this happen? Who killed him? Where were they? Would you be able to catch them? What would you do when you did catch them? Would you kill them too?
So many questions bombarded your mind but you had no answers. All you could do was pull Xue Yang all the way back to where Xingchen was and put him in a coffin beside him.
A-Qing was still missing. No matter what, you’d find her. You’d find her and keep her safe.
You poor fool.
If only you’d known. Only a few weeks after, you’d found out that A-Qing had become a ghost who begged other cultivators to ward them off. She even searched for someone to help kill Xue Yang, the cause of it all.
Learning the truth didn’t help anything. You’d learned everything overtime, piecing together some of your own thoughts.
Song Lan had appeared one day, he fought Xue Yang who cut out his tongue and turned him into a fierce corpse. A-Qing had seen it all and told Xiao Xingchen, who told her to run and hide.
Xingchen confronted Xue Yang, who lost it and taunted Xingchen with the one thing he couldn’t handle. Killing his own best friend, one who he’d given his own eyes to. Xingchen had taken his own sword and ended his life. You’d come home the next day.
Useless. You were so useless! You did nothing to save anyone! You couldn’t save Xue Yang, you couldn’t save A-Qing! You could save Xingchen! What good were you?
For someone who claimed family was so important, you sure as hell let your own down.
Ever since then, you’d been wandering the world. You didn’t know what to do. Would you go looking for Song Lan and kill him for ruining everything? Would you kill Wei Ying for daring to come back to life when no one you cared about could? What could you do?
Nothing.
As usual, you weren’t able to do anything. All you were good for was crying and regretting every life choice.
What would they want? What would they want you to do? Xingchen would probably want you to move on or something. A-Qing would probably suggest marrying some rich clan leader or something. Xue Yang might suggest you get revenge.
But you were tired. You were so tired and your mind kept replaying scenarios where your life would've been different. You kept wishing and begging for the universe to give you another chance but it never did.
Every day you woke up realizing your mistakes. Your inability to help anyone, your inability to do anything. Your mind replayed one thing and one thing only:
“Useless (y/n)...” you murmured as you took a sip of the tasteless tea. A tear slid down your cheek and you watched it hit the table below. It was soon followed by dozens more.
Even now, you couldn’t let go. You couldn’t move on. What was the point anyway? They’d all still be dead.
One thing you often wondered about was joining them. You tried. You tried living on your own. You tried for a whole year to continue without them, but it was so hard. It was almost as difficult as bringing them back to life.
But before you ended your time on this miserable planet… you needed two things.
Xingchen’s sword, Shuanghua, and his spirit pouch.
You glared up at the bright blue sky that taunted you, vowing to get both of them from Song Lan. There was nothing else left in the world for you… but those two things… you so desperately needed them.

Something Good, Part Seventeen
In which we get to the title
Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six, Part Seven, Part Eight, Part Nine, Part Ten, Part Eleven, Part Twelve, Part Thirteen, Part Fourteen, Part Fifteen, Part Sixteen
--
When Wei Wuxian wakes up, the sun is going down, and he is alone. For a few comfortable minutes he stretches and luxuriates in having a whole bed to himself. The bedclothes are far better quality than he’s become used to. It feels like he’s been asleep for ages, but it must have only been an hour, if that.
His stomach growls, startling him more awake. He’s likely missed dinner, but there’s sure to be some left over in the kitchen. Perhaps he’ll grab Lan Wangji something as well, to repay his kindness.
When he gets to the kitchen, Wang Xiaolu is there scrubbing out a wok.
“Ah, Wei Ying! How was your day off?”
“Day off?” he darts around her to grab a steamed bun. It’s not hot, but not unpleasantly cold yet, either. “I had the little ones all day.”
“Lady Wen has had the little ones all day in the medicine garden. Madam Xiao said you were sleeping in.”
Wei Wuxian drops the bun onto the bench. “I slept through an entire day?”
“Is that what you did with your day off? Ha, Wei Ying, what a lazy bones. It’s been a gorgeous day, you could at least have taken a walk up the mountain.”
“I don’t get days off, anyway.”
Wang Xiaolu tchs at him. “Servants in the Cloud Recesses get a day off after every ten days. Surely you know that.”
“I never— I’ve never had a day off before.”
She puts down the wok and spins around to face him. “Are you serious? You need to talk to Lin Biming! It must have been a mistake! If they skip your days off, then you’re entitled to them later, you know. You need to count up how many you’ve missed! Always keep records. You might have a whole vacation saved up!”
Wei Wuxian laughs, feeling awkward. “I don’t think prisoners get days off.”
Wang Xiaolu goes back to work. “Everyone gets days off. If anyone tells you different, then we’ll all go to Master Lin together, and if he doesn’t listen then we go to the Sect Leader. It’s happened before, you know. We’re stronger together—they forget how many of us there are until we all show up together. Anyway, Wei Ying, Master Lin told us this morning that today was your day off, so I did breakfast and Madam Xiao just did dinner, and Lady Wen has been in the garden all day. Even Second Master Lan was gone today. Must have been exhausted from all the guests. Nobles do get tired easily.”
“I’m not a noble!” he cries out, feeling defensive.
“Of course not!” she flicks soapy water at him. “You certainly earned your rest day. Go on, take another bun. They can’t make you work again until the morning, but stay out of the way just in case. You know when Madam gets on a tear she’ll grab anyone by the ear. And between us, the Wen guests wrecked the guest quarters. Liquor soaked all the way through the mattress, tch.”
“Wen Chao, I bet,” he says darkly.
“Makes no difference to me who it is, I just hope they aren’t invited to the wedding.”
Wei Wuxian sticks another bun in his pocket and wanders back to the Jingshi, detouring into the forest to play a few scales on Chenqing. When he returns to the room, Lan Wangji is still gone. Wei Wuxian tries to sit politely, but the shadows lengthen and his restlessness grows, so he starts poking around. Surely if Lan Wangji worried about him looking around the room he wouldn’t have left him alone here for the entire day.
The books on the shelves aren’t very surprising—a few political treatises, transcripts of cultivation lectures, a pocket version of the Lan Sect rules (as if Lan Wangji needs the reminder) and some bland classic poetry. No adventure stories or romances, just descriptions of peonies and snowdrifts. He reads a few poems over, wondering if perhaps there are metaphors he’s missing, then sets them back on the shelf.
There’s a nice wardrobe with identical sets of white and blue robes. Wei Wuxian considers trying one on, but imagines being caught with his shabby self in the perfect white silk and decides to err on the side of caution. He’s examining some musical scores on the floor when the door finally opens and Lan Wangji comes in.
“Lan Zhan!” He scrambles upright. “I’m sorry for prying, but in my defense you did leave me here for an entire day. Why didn’t you wake me? I must have really been deep asleep. You know, I think I could play this piece. I can see there’s an interval that would make a nice harmony at the bridge here. What do you think, Lan Zhan? Oh, I brought you a steamed bun from the kitchen. It’s probably cold by now, and a little squished, but—”
He finally looks at Lan Wangji and his voice cuts off in his throat. Lan Wangji’s eyes are red, swollen, and when Wei Wuxian manages to take in all of him together he looks wrecked, stricken, leaning against the door as if unable to hold himself upright.
“Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian breathes, dropping the score to the ground. “What’s happened? Is it Wen Ruohan? Who’s dead? Zewu Jun? Lan Zhan, what can I do?”
Lan Wangji says nothing, just keeps staring at him.
“Is it— Not the children, Lan Zhan?” Wei Wuxian runs to him and grabs his arms, desperate. “What’s happened? Tell me, tell me, please!”
Lan Wangji wraps his arms around him and pulls him tightly against his chest. Wei Wuxian can feel his damp face against the skin of his neck, and worries that he might faint from fear.
“Please, Lan Zhan, you’re scaring me. What’s happened?”
“I spoke to Wen Qing,” is all Lan Wangji says.
“What? Wen Qing? Is she all right? Has something—”
“She told me about the core transfer.”
Wei Wuxian pulls back, fighting against Lan Wangji’s arms.
“What?”
“She told me.”
“That’s it? She just told you about— Aiyah! Lan Zhan, you are really terrible. Feel my heart!” He presses Lan Wangji’s hand against his chest. “You nearly killed me! I thought something terrible had happened!”
He pulls away, shaking off Lan Wangji’s hands and collapsing down on the bed.
“The surgery—” Lan Wangji’s voice breaks off. Wei Wuxian crosses his arms over his chest.
“There’s no reason to cry about that old thing.”
Lan Wangji stays by the door, still looking destroyed.
“Two days. She told me you—”
“Yes, yes,” Wei Wuxian waves his hand. “I know, I was there.”
“How did you— How could you stand it?”
Wei Wuxian sits up, embarrassed and more than a little angry. “You don’t know what you can stand until you have to stand it. There’s no reason to dwell on it. What, do you want to see it? Will that calm you down?”
He pulls his shirt over his head, throws it on the ground, and leans back against the pillows. “There, are you happy? It’s ugly, but it’s closed. Everything is fine.”
Lan Wangji looks at him for a long time. Wei Wuxian’s skin starts to spring up in gooseflesh, but he fights down the shiver. Last night Lan Wangji had challenged him, so he’s challenging back. He’s a second away from giving in, saying something ridiculous to break the tension, when Lan Wangji comes over and sits next to him on the bed. He reaches out and hovers one finger over the scar, twisted and ugly and pink as raw meat. His gaze is so intense Wei Wuxian feels it like a blade, opening him back up.
“Lan Zhan,” he whispers. What do you want? he doesn’t ask. What is it you need?
Slowly, but still suddenly, Lan Wangji bends at the waist and presses his cheek to Wei Wuxian’s stomach. Wei Wuxian gasps but doesn’t move. He can feel Lan Wangji’s head move up and down with each shaky breath he takes. A tear slides down his side, soaks into the band of his trousers.
“Don’t cry, Lan Zhan. Please don’t cry.”
Lan Wangji shakes his head, smearing tears across his stomach.
“So contrary, Lan Zhan.”
Wei Wuxian reaches out tentatively to smooth a hand over his hair. He’s not sure why touching Lan Wangji’s hair seems more intimate than anything that’s happened between them so far.
“Kiss me, Lan Zhan?”
Lan Wangji sits up and wipes his face on his sleeve. Wei Wuxian wants to offer his shirt, something rough and durable and meant for soaking up messes. But before he can think anymore, Lan Wangji is leaning forward and kissing him, open and wet. Wei Wuxian takes a risk and pulls him down on top of himself, the weight of him calming down every shiver, every howling voice inside of him relaxing into a satisfied purr.
Lan Wangji pulls back, holding himself up with his elbows. Wei Wuxian pouts at him.
“What do you want, Wei Ying?” He’s looking through Wei Wuxian’s eyes into his brain, into his marrow, into the place his core used to be.
“This. I just want this, Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian runs a finger over Lan Wangji’s lower lip. “Just keep me.” He leans up to kiss him again.
Wei Wuxian has both arms wrapped around Lan Wangji’s neck when he’s released, left back on the pillow with Lan Wangji hovering over him and worrying his lip in his teeth.
“What is it, Lan Zhan?”
“I won’t keep you.”
Wei Wuxian’s stomach drops through the mattress. Why would anyone want you? You’re empty. (I’m not.)
Lan Wangji rolls off him to lay by his side. Wei Wuxian crosses his arms and holds onto his bare shoulders, suddenly feeling very cold.
“Has anyone told you about my father and my mother?” Lan Wangji asks.
“This is a very strange time to talk about your parents,” Wei Wuxian says, aiming for a joke but missing by a mile.
“My father loved my mother. Or that’s what everyone said. My mother committed a crime. She killed someone. Everyone said she was guilty, but I never heard her version of events. And my father married her, to protect her. I don’t know that she had a choice.”
Wei Wuxian turns to him and watches him swallow.
“She was a rogue cultivator when they met. The Lan Sect— There is a lot of power held by the Lan Sect, especially here in Gusu. They married, and she became a prisoner. Xichen and I were born, but we only saw her once every month. She remained locked in her room, serving a sentence with no trial.
“She was powerful, I think. My father—he was the Sect Leader, but I don’t believe he had exceptional spiritual power. And Xichen and I— It only makes sense that she was powerful. She could have broken out, left, gone off into the world. But she didn’t, because we were here. Not because of my father, not because of the laws or the rules. Because of us.
“I was just a child, I didn’t know what I was doing at the time. But I was her cage. We were her cage. And she died a very small woman. We made her small.”
“Lan Zhan.”
“I won’t do that to you. I will not be your cage, Wei Ying, even if you love me.”
“Lan—”
“I love you, but I will not keep you.”
Wei Wuxian leans up on an elbow. “You love me?”
“Yes.”
“Really?”
Lan Wangji glares at him. “Obviously.”
Wei Wuxian huffs out a laugh and rests his head on Lan Wangji’s shoulder. “I’m sorry about your mother, Lan Zhan.”
“That wasn’t the point.”
“I know. I’m still sorry though.”
“Wei Ying.”
“I do love you. Also.”
Lan Wangji relaxes and turns toward him, tucking an arm around his bare waist. “I’m glad.”
“How long?”
“Hm?”
“Have you loved me?”
“Caiyi Town.”
“Really?”
“Hmm.”
Wei Wuxian kisses his chin. “I don’t know how long I’ve loved you. I’ve only just been allowed to, after all. Oh, don’t argue. Just kiss me again.”
He does, again and again, and his robes disappear, and Wei Wuxian’s trousers, and night falls, and everything turns warm and honey-sweet.
Hours, years later, when Wei Wuxian comes back to himself, he’s laying on Lan Wangji’s chest with fingers tangled in his hair.
“I’ve done terrible things,” he says, but it’s not heavy, not guilty.
Lan Wangji grunts unhappily.
“No, I have. I’ve been wicked, miserable. I’ve been proud and arrogant and irresponsible. Since I was a kid, honestly, and I’ve only gotten worse. I’ve been nothing but a problem, and I’ve enjoyed it.”
“No.”
Wei Wuxian pinches his side. “Yes, I have. But here you are.”
“Hmm.”
“I may not be the demon everyone thinks I am, but I’m not innocent. And you know that. And still, here you are.”
“Always.”
Wei Wuxian rubs his forehead against the warm, smooth skin beneath him. “You shouldn’t, you know. But you don’t care. All those rules, Lan Zhan, and you don’t care.”
“You are good.”
“I must have done something. It’s the only thing that makes sense. You’re here, and you love me, in spite of everything. I must have done something so good to deserve it. Maybe when I was little, a long time ago. Something so, so good.” He leans up and traces a finger around Lan Wangji’s serious face. “Oh, look at you. It must have been something wonderful.”
Lan Wangji leans up and captures his mouth again, big hands sliding up over his back.
“I don’t know what I did,” Lan Wangji breathes into his ear. “But surely I’ve done something wonderful too.”
“Look at us,” Wei Wuxian laughs, shifting back on top of him. “We must be amazing.”
Lan Wangji smiles at him, wide and bright and shining like a waterfall in the sun, and the force of it knocks the breath out of Wei Wuxian. “We must.”

Summary: Wei Wuxian is determined. After seeing his Lan Zhan yawning, yawning of all things, he makes it his mission to let his husband take a rest. Though, as with many things in life, it doesn't go according to plan. Many years had passed since the esteemed Hanguang-Jun and the Yiling Patriarch had found themselves stuck in a cave on death's doorstep, confessing deeply rooted traumas to each other. Wei Ying would give everything he had and more to never let it happen again. Never. He was going to cherish Lan Wangji like he deserved, until the day he died.

"IT'S FREEZING OUT HERE!!! HUG ME LAN ZHAN!!!"
The snow was fierce, blowing in strong gusts of wind that changed directions every few seconds. Thick snowflakes sat in everyone's hair, from the lovers leading to the group, to the juniors being nearly blown away trailing behind. Clearly (or rather, unclearly- it was very hard to see), this day was not going as Wei Ying had hoped. Had it, and they might've been dancing through the white-coated streets of Caiyi, where the sky was calm now, and the sun shone to melt some of the snow. A blizzard in Yuanwei was certainly not in his planned itinerary for the day.
They'd been sent off when Zewu-Jun arrived back in the Cloud Recesses, visibly distressed with several delayed letters of aid coming from the townspeople. A blizzard of questionable origins had been raging for about two days now, judging by the dates on the papers. A collection of them had been found just outside the borders of the place. When recalling the events of the night before to the Lan Sect Leader, the worst was feared. Had the people been... were they gone?
If so, they were dealing with something, or someone, much more dangerous than they'd hoped.
So Zewu-Jun sent out his brother, accompanied by Wei Ying, and a group of their finest junior disciples to look for survivors, or bodies of the dead. Whatever was left at this point. Though, what had yet to be explained, was why Jin Ling was trotting around and rolling his eyes at Wei Ying snuggling against up his lover.
"Roll your eyes all you want! I'm cold! What are you even doing here?!" The former Jiang disciple hissed, head half-covered by Wangi's long sleeve he'd been wrapped in. "Shouldn't you be doing Sect Leader things?! If we needed a Sect Leader, Zewu-Jun would've come with us!"
"Mind your business!" The teen snapped back, crossing his arms. "I'm studying in Gusu right now! Did you forget? We literally see each other every day!" Jin Ling... in the Cloud Recesses? That would explain why a wild Jin would be wearing white. But it wasn't exactly ringing a bell. "Why didn't you dress warmer anyways? You knew where we were going!"
"I am dressed warm! I have my warmest clothes on mind you! But it's still cold!"
"Then you're a baby."
"A-Ling... Maybe fighting with Senior Wei isn't worth it?" Sizhui intervened, giving the softest nervous smile he could. "All of us are still cold, the temperatures are below what most of us are used to. We should try to get this done as soon as possible."
So it was A-Ling now? Interesting... He and Sizhui would be having a talk when they got home. Wangji seemed to pick up on this too, sharing a look with the other before nodding.
"Well said Sizhui!" Wei Ying exclaimed, pacing around the group. "What a polite disciple! You should try to be more like him! Your uncle has corrupted your brain to be so aggressive! It's scary!" He jumped back to his lover in exaggerated fear when Jin Ling practically growled at him as a response.
"Can we get going now? Some of us would like to keep all our fingers and toes by the end of this." Jingyi complained, sarcasm being second nature to him. It was almost impressive. "It's cold, and this place is almost buried. I don't wanna be buried with it."
Normally, the Second Jade would at least point out the rude behavior. But the boy was right. People's lives could be on the line. So he took off his outermost layer of winter robes, gently placing the clothing around Wei Ying's shoulders. His husband's golden core was still weak in comparison to what it used to be, Wangji could manage in the cold if it meant swaddling the other. White was not his color, but seeing Wei Ying with embellished clouds covering his typical black and red combination reminded him of their student days back in Gusu. Back when they were carefree teenagers.
They had to move now.
So they walked. Trudging through knee-deep snow as wind whipped their faces, snow blurring their vision, and hoping they were still headed towards the right direction. Wei Ying tried to protest giving the extra layer back, but would only be met with, "You need it more." At least, it was something along those lines. Perhaps it changed, Wei Ying didn't focus on it too much. All he wanted was for his beloved to be taking a break.
They hadn't slept in. There was no time for naps or any trips out to Caiyi. No buying loquats in the marketplace or relaxing by the cold pond (too cold to go in!) or catching up over a meal with the kids. It scared him. Wangji looked exhausted; scary to think about, scarier to see.
Is this what it felt like? Being worried for your one true love? Did Lan Zhan go through this all the time? Standing there, watching, knowing he's too stubborn to ask for help or properly take a rest? They were more alike than Wei Ying would like to admit... and that was... Miraculous. Even through his worry, Wei Ying couldn't help but be enamored by the graceful beauty Wangji had. Intoxicating in the best way.
Thick, frosty flakes sat in his hair, looking so natural. So pristine, so tranquil. "Lan Zhan! How dare you look like a regal, captivating snow prince while the rest of us look like drowned rats!" The Yiling Patriarch whined. He wasn't wrong, damp, half-frozen hair clung together wildly in almost everyone's face. Yet Lan Wangji was immune, so to speak, still looking as handsome as ever. Even tired, he was radiant.
"Mn. Not true." The Second Jade replied.
Ah, an opportunity. "Oh? Is that so?" Wei Ying smirked, bringing his palms to rest cutely onto his frigid, rosy cheeks. "So there's an exception then? Someone who gets to be labelled as breathtaking as Hanguang-Jun? I envy them~"
"Sizhui."
Eh!? "LAN ZHAN!!!" Wei Ying cried, throwing his arms back down in a fuss. He could already hear the muffled snickers coming from the juniors still following behind. "YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SAY ME!!!"
"Lying is forbidden."
"WHAT!?!? LAN WANGJI!!!"
Oh how they laughed. The lot of teens quite honestly couldn't contain it anymore. Senior Wei had just been delivered a critical blow- that was hilariously overdue. Anyone could hear the moment Jin Ling dropped to the ground with a loud thump, sinking into the fresh powder as hysterical laughter spread throughout the group. Jingyi was barely hunched over on his knees, trying his very best to stay upright in the frenzy, huffing loudly every few seconds to get more air. The ever-mannered Sizhui only meekly turned away, giggling in a sort of shame.
But Hanguang-Jun took a hand to his husband's face. "Wei Ying is too bright. Too warming. He cannot be a snow prince. Has to be the sun. "
The Yiling Patriarch smiled brightly, spitting out a "take that!" to the group. "Is it because I make you melt, Ji-xiong?" He asked, playfully sticking out his tongue.
Still laying in the snow, Jin Ling covered his eyes. "Ew. I did not want to see that. Please never do that again."
Hanguang-Jun didn't seem outwardly amused, but Wei Ying could tell he was snickering at the remark (on the inside!). That is, until the Second Master Lan stepped forward once more. "No time for this. Advance."
With that, the disciples scurried back and followed. Even his husband seemed to get the message that his teasing time was regretfully over. Maybe Lan Zhan WASN'T laughing on the inside? Actually, he seemed so tense all of a sudden. Stiff as a board. When they'd arrived, he was his usual smittenly sweet self. Now it was like he was in a cultivation conference listening to the nonsense being spit by anyone who craved a sliver of attention. But he had seen him amused by it! So what just happened?
Sizhui, covertly speeding up behind Wei Ying, tugged on his sleeve. If he hadn't been half-expecting the kid to notice, he might've flinched. But A-Yuan was attentive. The subtle frown on the teen's face, the way his eyebrows lowered, and his lip sunk just a bit- Sizhui was worried too. And maybe, just maybe, Wei Ying was close enough to now be able to decipher his kid too.
Before either of them could try to get to the bottom of this, a quiet thunk was heard. Thunking wasn't the typical crunch of the snow now was it? Heads turned to Lan Jingyi, the origin of the sound. At the disciple's feet, something was peeking out. The group gathered around the unidentified object like ducklings, before digging into the fresh powder.
"It's... It's some kind of box?" Someone announced. Three of them lifted it up, but whatever was inside was buried at this point. Tipping it over, parcels containing cloths and pendants fell out. Many of them held the same, if not similar design to the tapestry previously hung in the Jingshi, and the symbol on their map.
"Well!" Wei Ying bent down, grabbing one of the pendants and sweeping snow off its print. "At least we know we're getting close!" He perked up, "And this wasn't buried deep. Someone was carrying this recently. Maybe even a few hours ago. Could've been a merchant, could've been a shopkeeper desperate to preserve their valuables. But it was abandoned here within the last 24 hours, so there's at least one person nearby."
Wangji nodded. But he kept the grim look on his face. It was always a possibility, but no one was happy when he added, "Check for bodies."
They dug around. No bodies. That was a relief. Whoever was out here, well, hopefully this meant shelter was somewhere, and still intact. Townspeople didn't have golden cores, they wouldn't make it long in this.
So they kept going. Wei Ying kept his eyes on Lan Wangji, and through his peripheral vision, watched as Sizhui and now Jingyi seemed to fret at the sight of their beloved Hanguang-Jun. If Jin Ling had any suspicions, he was doing so from afar, trailing behind with the very end of the group.
What was especially concerning, was that Lan Zhan didn't notice them. Really, Lan Wangji wasn't noticing their not-so discreet eyes piercing into him. He just kept walking.
But a hut, a hut on the hill, would draw attention away from that. A hut on a hill with a fire nonetheless, as smoke came out of the side of the place. The teens cheered, scurrying up closer, but never going past their Second Jade, who kept his simple pace. Luckily he seemed relaxed at the sight. Thank goodness, it was unbearable to see that side of him! Oh Wei Ying was definitely having a conversation with his lover about this later.
Wangji lightly knocked on the door. The loud screech of the bitter wind nearly drowned the voices inside the cabin out. But the door swung open. A woman put a hand to her chest, sighing with relief. "The cultivators have arrived!" She cried out. "Oh you're here, we're saved! We're saved!"
She pushed the door out wider. Groups of people could be seen sitting on the floor, the younger of which appearing to be swaddled in thin, scarce blankets. There was enough people crowded in this tiny house to... To fill a village! Oh!
All of them huddled around a tiny bundle of wood lit aflame in the middle of the floor. Just barely, it seemed, as it was more of a flicker than a flame. The Juniors were already taking care of that, a fire talisman sweeping through the air to get a brighter flame on the already charred wood. "Jingyi, Jin Ling, gather some wood." Lan Wangji instructed. "Sizhui, keep feeding the flame as best as you can."
The three nodded, immediately doing as they were told. Sizhui shielded the fire when the other two had opened the door. Still, the fire wavered, hanging on by what could best be compared to a loose thread. "Miss, what happened?" Wangji asked, in as few, few words as possible. At least that was normal.
"Hanguang-Jun," She started, slowly. "Hanguang-Jun, a few days ago, one of our youngest here, A-Bao, had wandered off. When he came back into town, he said he'd met a little girl." The woman's breath hitched, eyes welling up with tears. "H-He said this girl was friendly, and she wanted to play with him. A-Bao talked to her and... and he mentioned he liked snow. So the little girl promised she'd make it snow for him the next day."
It sounded like a fairytale, almost. "We thought... we thought it was a joke. But the snow came the next day. At the time, it was a coincidence to us. It's winter, we don't usually get a lot of it but it's not uncommon. But the snow never stopped!" She cried out, causing a few gathered by the fire to groan, or cover their ears. "It never stopped! We tried sending requests for aid. But every time we sent someone out, they came back, halfway to death's doorstep! No one could bear the journey! The last person to go out never came back! Sang Meng, our most talented in cultivation! A-Bao is his brother... So he went to fix his mess! Oh please, please!" The woman was kneeling now, gripping her dress, tightly. "Please help us, Hanguang-Jun! The boy might've died! We can't last like this!"
A spirit, most definitely. No curse could do this, and last he'd checked, Wei Ying wasn't aware of any large scale weather changing talismans. However, it would be unlikely this spirit would attempt to freeze over the town, and send a signal while its people were still alive. If it was out to kill, no warnings would be given. Therefore, it was not the spirit to have burnt the tapestry last night. Wei Ying's eyes glimmered with a realization. "Has Sang Meng ever created any original talismans?"
The woman nodded, vigorously. "He's been working on an altered fire talisman last I'd heard. Why?"
"He's alive, or, was. Last night. He could still be out there."
Everyone gasped. Some pulled each other close, some remaining more distant. The juniors were surprised, especially. But hope, hope was in the eyes of the townspeople. It was an all too familiar feeling. Wangji nodded, catching onto what his husband had eluded to. "Incident in the Cloud Recesses." He confirmed, though giving no other details. "Sang Meng could be alive. Most likely with the spirit now. I need to go."
...I? When had there ever been an I with them? The one person Wei Ying did not want of this house, and he was volunteering. "Lan Zhan-" He tried, but honestly, it was no use. He also, in good conscience, did not want to send the kids out in this, possibly to retrieve a body. Besides, his husband was already halfway to the door. "Lan Zhan!!! I'm coming with you! Wait for Xian-gege!"
"Wei Ying will stay here."
"Wei Ying absolutely will not. Silly Lan-er-ge."
They were both impossible to sway from these kinds of things. Righteousness was as much of a curse as it was a blessing. The Second Master Lan sighed, taking his beloved's hand. "Wei Ying is cold. The juniors are cold. They will stay here and help keep warm." He insisted,
Wei Ying huffed. Were they fighting? Was this a fight? No, Wangji was looking at him with those sweet big eyes of his. Guilt trap. It was a guilt trap, do not fall for it. They weren't fighting, Lan Zhan was worried. The other hated that. "Lan Zhan is cold too, he just won't admit it. This Yiling Patriarch is coming with you, and you cannot stop him!" With that, he continued for the door.
Wei Ying was set on this. These kids were absolutely not going to fight whatever was able to plague this whole place with a blizzard. It was definitely not the best idea to bring them, now that they had an idea of what was going on. But they could still help these people, hopefully not freezing in the meantime. "Oh, and A-Yuan, you're in charge. None of you are allowed to come with us, just make yourselves useful here. We're gonna go get the bad thing now! Don'tdoanythingstupidokaybyebye!" He beamed, ignoring the near horrified face of their son, and stepping out into the snow. His soulmate was already ten paces ahead.
Lan Wangji, just what was he not telling his A-Ying?
-
The woman, who Lan Sizhui now knew as Feng Jixiao, turned to face him. "So, are they always like this?"
A-Yuan laughed, timidly. There was only one word that came to mind to answer that, his beloved Hanguang-Jun's favorite phrase in the world. "Mn." He answered, closing his eyes. The disciple couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to go terribly wrong, and that he was missing something very important here. But what...
-
Wei Ying panted, holding himself up on his knees. "Lan... Zhan... not so fast." He mumbled, getting no response. Or rather, if he did get one, he couldn't hear. The wind had grown louder since they'd gone inside. But it was just the two of them out here now, and Wei Wuxian was determined to get to the bottom of whatever was going on with his husband. In this case, it had to come first. Spirit, rescue, whatever they were doing, his soulmate came first- and Wei Ying did not have a good feeling about this. No, not at all. Was Lan Zhan swaying?
They'd been walking for about an hour. Honestly, they probably strayed far away from their original direction long ago. Luckily, the two had a teleportation talisman to use if they started to freeze. Over an hour now, and still no sign of a boy. No taunting whispers of a spirit either. If they couldn't find this spirit, they would have to call for additional aid from the clan and evacuate the townspeople. The only reason they hadn't, well, those without a core had a slim chance of surviving long enough to get to safety. Yuanwei would bury itself, something that Wangji understood, and absolutely would not accep- Was Lan Zhan swaying?
No, Wei Ying couldn't give in to paranoia. The winds were strong, and his vision was blurred with snowflakes that would fall from his eyelashes as he blinked. He definitely was not seeing his husband sway as he walked. He wasn't noticing the way that his soulmate clenched his hands, stretching them in and out. What was it? Had he found A-Bao's brother? Was the sight too terrible to see? Wei Ying took his eyes off Hanguang-Jun for a moment, a fraction in time, to try and organize these frenzied thoughts of his...
Thud.
If a thousand snowflakes had fallen last evening, then the Heavens should be happy with what they'd brought down. The will of no deity or divine being ever deserved to take Hanguang-Jun down with it. But he was falling. By sheer adrenaline, Wei Wuixian was moving. As fast as any rules would forbid, he was moving. Across the sea of dusty white, he was going. But today, Wei Ying couldn't move fast enough. The Second Jade hit the ground, any and all color drained from his face. Lan Wangji was on the ground... a ground that began crackling and crunching underneath him. Snow didn't crackle like that. The Earth did not crackle.
They were walking on a lake. A fucking frozen lake for who knows how long. A frozen body of water they somehow had defied fate on until now. But now his soulmate was unconscious. He looked like he had DIED. How far out were they?! The ice was buried under the snow, Wei Ying couldn't tell! He couldn't see- FUCK!
"LAN ZHAN!"
An earth-shattering scream rang out, and god did he run. Wangji dipped below the surface and he ran. Wei Ying didn't even feel as though he was running. No, he was flying, as fast as humanly possible. The ice cracked beneath his feet as he ran, but he would not falter nor slip. The Yiling Patriarch did not stop as he dove just his hands into the freezing water. Thousands of needles shot through his every nerve, barely registering the white cloth he'd gotten ahold of. But once he saw it, he didn't hesitate. Wei Ying pulled. 'Please don't just be the headband,' he thought, desperately. He pulled and pulled with all the strength he'd worked to regain. Come on... come on! Lan Zhan!
Wei Ying fell back with a limp body in his arms. The former Jiang disciple didn't have time to even check if he was still breathing. They had to- he had to keep running! This ice absolutely not going to hold much longer. The teleportation talisman wouldn't be fast enough! He'd fucking play a life and death game of hopscotch across glaciers if he had to. Lan Wangji just fainted on him. He should've stopped him from coming. He should've said something sooner! This was all his fault!
Bichen. Wangji still had Bichen with him. Wei Ying was too weak to ride a sword, he didn't bring Suibian. But goddammit he was gonna ride this sword. WITH Lan Wangji. Unconcious. There were no other options. Bichen already had let him wield them once, a long time ago, so Wei Ying was eternally grateful when he was able to unsheathe the sword again. He threw it straight out, shaking hands gathering up the Second Jade, and hopping on.
Of course, he'd nearly fallen off right then and there. Bichen had taken a sharp swerve left to keep them on. Wei Ying adjusted his footing, and they were going at breakneck speed, on a dizzying, unclear path. He was on a moving tightrope, and could only hope when they eventually got to the ground, it was real ground. Solid, snow-covered ground. The wind hurt as they flew, but any pain in his hands was completely blocked out by frostbitten numbness and sheer determination.
They weren't high. He didn't feel like breaking any bones if they DID get lucky enough to not die from this. Wei Ying could only swing helplessly back and forth, trying to delay the inevitable for as long as possible. Eventually, he'd more or less gone dry of spiritual energy and lost his momentum, and they tumbled off the sword, which came to a halt. Wei Ying wasn't sure if he closed his eyes, or they'd done that by himself. He really didn't want to watch himself die again.
There wasn't any cracking. So, one eye peeked back open. Trembling, he slammed down on the ground with his arm. Not slippery. Hard. No cracking sounds. No breaking. Lan Wangji was in his arms. Panicked relief swept over him as though he'd never experienced before. He could cry, hell, he was already close. But it was too cold. Icicles hanging off his face wouldn't help. "Lan Zhan." He whispered pushing his body over to his husband, turning the Lan on his back. His voice was raspy, and god was he tired. "Lan Zhan." He shook. "A-Zhan. Wake up."
He didn't. Wei Ying hunched over him, breathing hard. He took his finger's to the other's wrist, hesitantly. He really, really couldn't feel, though. The Yiling Patriarch's hands were ghostly white. Was Lan Zhan breathing? He thinks so? Fuck it, he'd do it anyway. Wei Ying used his entire body to press into the other's chest. Deep, strong rounds of pushing, with the scarce bits of spiritual energy he had left being infused into his husband.
Before he could do any mouth to mouth (much to his dismay), a pained groan escaped the Second Jade's throat. Wei Ying quickly moved back, gasping. "Lan Zhan?" He asked, lacing his fingers into his soulmate's hand. He wanted to kiss him. He wanted to smack him too, but mostly kiss him. Instead, Wangji just turned over, harshly coughing. A small trail of water he'd breathed in fell onto the ground.
Glazed-over eyes stared back at him. The typical strong, striking gaze of the Lan's golden eyes looked more like they were dripping in honey. Wangji blinked, looking confused. "Wei Ying?" He asked, quietly. Wei Ying only nodded, bringing his unfeeling hand to Lan Zhan's face. Wangji looked as though he wanted to say more, but was simply too out of it. It didn't take much thinking to know that he was ice cold, colder than he was, even if Wei Ying couldn't feel it. They had to find shelter.
There was a tree nearby. Wei Ying trudged over with his own tired and bitterly freezing body and snapped off a thick, long branch. Leaning most of his weight onto his new walking stick, he swung Wangji's arm over his shoulders. "Lan Zhan, I'm going to carry you on my back, okay?" He spoke. Switching which hand he held his stick, he got the Second Jade's other arm around his neck. "Hang on for me, please."
Wei Ying had never said a genuine please in his life.
Wangji gave him no answer. Luckily, he seemed to comply, trying to hold his feet up, just a few centimeters off the ground, so they didn't drag. It was enough. Ideally, Wei Ying would be able to hold his legs, or just cradle the other bridal style in his arms once again. But this was not ideal, and he was exhausted. Wei Ying wasn't sure he'd stay upright without leaning against the stick. That, and he refused to stand on the ice again. If they were getting close, the stick would be the one being plunged into the frozen lake. Never would anyone think the Yiling Patriarch would be hunched over, stabbing the Earth with a walking stick with a frozen Hanguang-Jun on his back all those years ago. Yet here they were.
There was nothing to see but white. If only Wei Ying had more spiritual energy. The teleportation talisman they'd brought was just about useless now. Neither of them would have enough to use it- Lan Zhan's was far too important in keeping him alive. No signals would work in the blizzard either. Perhaps it wasn't the smartest decision for them to come alone. Then again, if all those kids had fallen into the ice... Wei Wuxian would never forgive himself. He'd never forgive himself for this.
...Wangji had closed his eyes again, head buried into Wei Ying's back as they walked. Was it a relief? Or was he- no, Wei Ying couldn't think about that. He was fine, for now. He WOULD be fine. When this was all over, fuck it, they were going on a break. A year-long break far away from any of this. No night hunting, no cultivation world. The Sects would just have to learn how to live without him and Lan Zhan solving all their problems. The world owed them it's kindness.
Heh, if he wasn't so blind, maybe things would be different. Maybe he could've married Lan Zhan all those years ago. Maybe the Burial Mounds could be the Yiling Wei Sect by now. Maybe Wen Qing and Granny Wen and Uncle Four would be sitting around a table as they feast. Or maybe they'd all be in the Cloud Recesses. Wen Ning would be perfect for this job, considering he's dead. He wanted to call him, in a desperate attempt, but Wei Ying knew he was in Lanling right now.
Maybe if he'd gotten Jiang Cheng out of that damn Wen prison earlier... They'd both have their cores. Maybe he wouldn't have walked his single-plank bridge. He could be sitting in Lotus Pier right now, and Shijie...
A cave. A cave?
He was hallucinating. That definitely wasn't the entrance to a cave. Oh, but it was too good to pass up. For Lan Zhan's sake, he'd have to hope it was real. Slowly sweeping through the mountains of white wet shit, Wei Ying put a hand to the outside rock wall of the hallucinated cave. Solid. Solid? It was real.
The inside was dark, damp, and depressing. Not the first cave they'd be stuck in, unfortunately. This one at least looked a little different, ice hanging from the ceiling in certain spots. But the cave- it was also deep. Deep enough to hide away from the whirring wind outside, and finally sit down with the Second Jade. He didn't waste a moment to pat his hand on the other's cheek, even if his own bones screamed at him. "Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan, you can't sleep anymore." Wei Ying spoke, soft, and hurriedly. "Lan Zhan. Open your eyes."
Those golden, honey glow eyes fluttered once more. "Wei Ying." Lan Wangji repeated, as if picking up where he'd left off before. Just by the way his head rested off the cave wall, Wei Ying could tell he was dizzy. "What-"
"I'd like to ask you the same question, Mister 'I'm fine I don't need a break' and 'let's faint on my husband'." The other bit, not exactly meaning to be harsh about it. Still, it probably came off that way. "You. You fainted. What the hell have you been doing? Why won't you talk to me?" Stop. He wasn't angry. Why was he saying these things?
'I'm sorry.' Wei Ying thought, his breath hitching. 'I'm so sorry for not doing something sooner. I let you fall.'
"I..." Wangji really, REALLY looked tired. But Wei Ying couldn't let him sleep. No, not until he warmed up, even just a little. Otherwise, he might never wake up again. "I can't tell... Wei Ying. I can't tell him." The Second Master suddenly shot upright, grasping at Wei Ying's clothes. "You won't tell him, will you? Please don't tell him."
Oh, that wasn't good. That wasn't good at all. Deliria? "...I won't tell him." Wei Ying answered back, sadly. He shuffled on the floor. That walking stick was about to come in hand. "I won't tell him anything... but we need to get you warmed up." Snapping the stick into three... four smaller sticks, he sprinkled them on a dry spot. Luckily, there was another tree right outside the cave entrance. So Wei Ying had taken Bichen once again, the sword being much heavier this time and chopped up bundles of logs. He came back to the same, mumbling Lan Zhan seated in the exact same place.
He had a fire talisman. Not that he couldn't start one on his own, but this was way easier. Plus, he didn't need spiritual energy for this one. A bit of his tinkering had come to the rescue. Fire talismans were one of the easiest to alter, he'd found. But if that kid had sent a strategic fire all the way to the Cloud Recesses, well, he was a bit of a genius. His rescue would have to wait, though.
The fire caught, blazingly. Sticking his hands over it made them feel as though they were melting back to some degree of normal. "Lan Zhan, I'm gonna move you closer to the fire, okay?"
He didn't get a verbal response. But he did get a pout, and puffed out cheeks. That couldn't help but make him laugh. "Ah Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan," He spoke, carrying his lover and plopping him on the ground, for him to then lean against Wei Ying's body. "Is Lan Zhan five? No, that can't be it. How about three?" He teased, trying to lighten the mood.
What didn't Wangji want to tell him? He couldn't be sure. All he could do was gather them up and throw them into the fire. Dissipate, burn and disintegrate and fly away. Make like a bird and fly away.
Hanguang-Jun was down. They had no idea where the spirit was. The Juniors and all the townspeople were waiting for them. Sang Meng's survival was looking less and less likely by the minute.
Lan Zhan was down.
"Shijie," He looks up, frowning, "Xianxian doesn't know what to do now."

Episode 21 - The PTSD is strong with this one & we need more braincells
Hello hello! Welcome to the commentary. How’s everyone? I’m frozen solid because it’s mid-June in Spain and yet we had 11°C yesterday. Fucking awesome!
I AM NOT WEARING MASCARA SO I CAN CRY ALL I WANT. I DONT KNOW IF THATS GOOD OR BAD THO.
Can I just take a second to appreciate how much this big strong powerful men emote? I mean, I know this isn’t western media where the tough guy can’t show emotions, and I don’t know that eastern media has the same hangups about men emoting but just... it’s so refreshing.
Huaisang bb you’re so sweet.
Oh, oh the PTSD is strong with this one.
Also, bless both JC and NHS, they absolutely noticed WWX flinch and, in their own ways, went and steamrolled over it so WWX wouldn’t feel scrutinised.
WE INTERRUPT THIS BROADCAST TO INFORM YALL THAT I GOT A KITTEN ON MY LAP. (She’s kneading my boob, which, ow, but...)
*BICHEN GRIIIIIIIP*
How do y’all think the guards go deliver bad news to WRH? Like do they paper-rock-scissor it? Draw straws?
NMJ did you have to?
And once again I wonder what would’ve happened if JFM had let sect leader Yao kick it.
Ughvhfnevus it’s this clown. Same as with Su She, if you see a bunch of screaming it’s just me not wanting to listen to Jin ZiXun.
The Nies: let’s throw a banquet to honour WWX’s return
Every asshole there: *gossips about WWX while in the room with him*
Once again I wish I could transmigrate (and speak mandarin lol) and just start delivering tongue lashings.
Listen, I have no idea how to play Guqin, but I did play the guitar for years and even from here I can see how much YiBo’s hands don’t match the melody. Nothing against him but why does this always happen? I know they got classes, so was the music not written by that time or something? Because one thing is not hitting the correct notes, another is plucking slow notes when the tempo is much faster.
JC: Since yours and LWJ’s unhappy separation...
My dumbass: do you mean breakup? *eyebrow waggle*
You will pry my “JC knows his brother is pinning after LWJ, he probably doesn’t want to know anything else” hc out of my cold dead hands thankyouverymuch.
WWX: *spouts a bunch of misdirection to avoid giving JC a straight answer*
JC: Bull-fucking-shit.
Should I count how many times WWX PTSDs all over the place or would you like me to leave your hearts intact? That’s two so far.
Ok ok, I feel that, if someone with a bit less trauma and a bit of insight (NHS maybe?) had seen the bit where ChenQing fucking hurts Shijie thing would’ve gone differently. I mean, yes, LWJ keeps warning WWX that this shit is gonna fuck him up, but as I said in my previous commentary LWJ also has the communication skills of a hermit crab so that wouldn’t work, and JC would be too wound up and WWX too busy trying to conceal his lack of golden core for that conversation to go anywhere. But if someone who WWX knows is a good egg (I’m not gonna say trusts bc paranoia) had sat him down and told him “your new instrument that you use for your new form of cultivation just hurt the person you love most please be careful when you use it.” I think it would’ve worked wonders towards his health overall.
I know Shijie says it’s like Zidian, but she’s not working with the fact that this thing is made for and by the Dark Side of the Force and I’m sorry but I can’t help but see ChenQing as a bit of a horrocrux almost. Or like, if you like me think the Burial Mounds is an Entity, something that’s a bit more sentient that it lets on.
Speaking of reputations and NHS being a good egg, I have oh-so-many ideas (I won’t say plot bunnies because I can’t write for shit) in which NHS for Reasons (time-travel? Letter from the future? His massive brain?) realises just how much damage WWX is doing to his public image. And he might be a sheltered dandy, but he saw what being the son of a sex worker did to Meng Yao despite how hard he worked (I’m assuming he doesn’t know about the whole betrayal business). This is way fucking worse, like hell is he going to let one of his best friends paint a target on his back. So he pulls back his sleeves, engages his slytherin brain and proceeds to lay down a plan to throughly destroy WWX’s reputation as a powerful genius.
I’m guessing LWJ and JC protest, and maybe WWX, and NHS just hits them with “do you want him respected or alive?” And they shut tf up. He glues himself to WWX, and brings up as many instances in which their behaviour can be compared as he can (we got drunk and punished at cloud recesses, we slept in class, we skipped to go fishing, I don’t carry my sword either). And, because assholes be assholes, people like Sect Leader Yao or Clown Cousin are quick to start spouting their own derogatory bullshit and thus WWX the untamed powerful prodigy dies a fiery death. Now he’s just a mouthy kid with a quick mind that “does tricks instead of battle” (I’ll never get bored of using that Thor quote). I also like to think that people who personally know WWX and are not pieces of shit go give NHS a tongue lashing for messing with what they thought was his friend, NHS takes that as a test of good eggness and bring them into the plan. Soon the whole Cloud Recesses class is swearing up, down, left, right and centre that all the shit WWX has ever successfully pulled is just an insane amount of luck and quick thinking.
I don’t know how would they work him into the battlefield (disguise? Mask?) to unleash his demonic cultivation but that’s Plot and I don’t do that.
Also, because I’m a terrible human being I want to say that people assume LWJ is on “pretty but useless” WWX like white on rice because *insert derogatory comment about being good in bed and sexual favours*. Because y’all know the assholes here are Like That. And WWX is horrified because holy fucking shit he’s gonna drag LWJ’s reputation down, he can’t have people thinking HGJ is ok with having him as a concubine pretty much. But before he can act LWJ politely all but confirms that yeah, he’s tapping that, y’all wish you were but he doesn’t share and none of y’all are good enough for his Wei Ying anyway. CUE FAKE/PRETEND RELATIONSHIP BECAUSE I AM INDEED TRASH FOR THAT TROPE.
Muahahahaha y’all thought I was gonna devolve into my personal hcs and not include my fave trope? Shouldn’t y’all know me better by now?
(Btw I like this bit ^ so I might polish it a little and post it separately as well, just a warning if you find yourself reading an eerily similar post by me)
WuJi is playing and LWJ is pining so much. Also, if LWJ did not just realise that, just like Yu the Great, WWX had no other option but tame resentful energy I’ll eat my blanket.
I refuse to believe Jiang Yanli didn’t become the unofficial war camp therapist/sounding board/only sane person/everyone’s mum/I just need a hug and a corner to cry in peace. There are not enough fics about Shijie being her gentle BAMF self while in the camp and it’s a pity. My crops are dying y’all!
Also, I will fight anyone who scoffs at Shijie being the epitome of the “gentle woman who cooks and waits for the men to come back from war”. Look at her mum, do you think it is easy for a kid (she was a kid in the flashback when WWX ran away) to see that day in and day out, to have that as a “role model” and decide that she was not going to be like her mum? That she didn’t like what she saw in her so she was going to be kind and gentle? And do you think it is easy for a person barely in their twenties to deal with years of verbal and psychological abuse for again, being gentle and kind, and not grow a hard shell of bitterness to protect themselves? And to keep being gentle and kind while at war, with your parents dead and your siblings unraveling before your very eyes? Shijie is so fucking strong and I love her.
Hey look, the White Walkers!
“Resentful energy is just energy” ok, valid. But my dude, you’ve got black ghost smoke coming out of you and can hear people screaming in your head. I’m not saying it is evil, like someone’s uptight set in his ways arrogant uncle; but it sure as shit ain’t healthy.
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH (that’s a Clown Cousin scream btw)
Ok ok, just one little thing: IF SOMEONE ELSE CALLS WWX WEI YING AS A SHOW OF DISRESPECT IMMA SCALP THEM.
...are those crows eating that man alive? Yikes on bikes.
(Assume my comment about YiBo’s Guqin playing also goes for Xiao Zhan and his flute. I can’t play the flute but the tempo doesn’t match his fingers)
I’m just gonna say it, I think 3zun (well, 2zun as of now) suspect shit went down badly for WWX, that’s two questions by both of them in a very soft conciliatory tone. They are genuinely interested/worried about the topic, and don’t seem to come off as chiding or judgemental. I mean WWX is a weirdo irreverent kid and they’re sect leaders, they outrank him so much it’s ridiculous. I’m also counting the fact that both their baby brothers like him towards them being so kind. But I also think WWX just triggers all their big brother instincts the second he walks in.
Oh there’s a thought, Shijie, Wen Qing, NMJ and LXC take a look at everyone’s shitty parents and just decide to adopt everyone.
What happened at Yiling was a traumatised teenager (is WWX even 20?) PTSDing all over the place with the Dark Side of the Force whispering in his ear and an all powerful trinket at his disposal. Not saying I approve of all the torture and murder but he clearly isn’t revelling in them.
That is some outstanding bit of big-brothering on LXC’s side and I love it. Also, my dumbass just realised LWJ probably wasn’t quoting WWX when he was being punished (what is white what is black?) I think he was quoting his big brother. Which is magnitudes deep too, but in a different direction and I might love that scene even more.
Ok fuck it, I’m gonna tangent. So I had a terrible boyfriend when I was 15-18. He alienated me from my friends, sunk my self-esteem to the molten core of the earth, tried to convince me my parents were abusive and encouraged (aka threatened manipulated and cajoled) the slow tanking of my high school marks. I have A Problem when I see media where someone latches onto their significant other and everything they are shifts towards that person. Now, love, true genuine love, is powerful, and I believe it can be the catalyst for shifting your world-view for the better. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t have a problem with people sticking with their romantic partner if it is clear their previous “family” is so much shit. I don’t have a problem with LWJ coming out of his shell and defying corrupt precepts because his love for WWX made them see they were wrong, or getting sassy and unrepentant during his punishment (I have a problem with the punishment bc that’s abuse but...). But I do side-eye WangXian being the only thing in their orbit. People need people, and WangXian have other good people around them. So I kind of love that yes, WWX showed him the system was corrupt, but it is the words of his brother he is sticking by to the defy said system.
Let’s go back to our scheduled slew of held pinning glances shall we?
LXC after That awkward run-in: WangJi I wasn’t gone that long, what the fuck did you two oblivious pining idiots do?
(LXC has “bitching” tea sessions with Shijie and you can’t convince me otherwise)
LWJ: *is being dramatic and not knocking on WWX’s door*
Me: oh my god you fucking idiot
Shijie: *walks in*
Me: oh thank god someone with a braincell.
Ah yes, there we go triggering WWX’s paranoia again. Why would he get a break.
OH MY GOD YOU PAIR OF FUCKING IDIOTS. THATS IT, FUCK THIS SHIT IM OUT.
@ LWJ: bitch wtf was that? I know you’re shit at talking but have you thought about writing it down? Letters anyone? It worked for mr. Darcy.
(Yes LWJ is mr darcy and now I want an au where LWJ writes WWX letters and just pours everything in them, WWX finds them, any everything is sunshine and rainbows)
While this bullshit fight/misunderstanding is all on LWJ’s shoulders, I’m also going to scream at WWX. Because yes, he is in PTSD hell, but he trusted LWJ before, and yet he can’t get past his perceived notion of LWJ’s character (and his own inadequacies) to trust him again and ask for help. Plus, you know, he thinks he doesn’t deserve he’ll bc *waves hand at WWX’s trauma conga line*
These episodes can’t be good for my BP.
Thanks for reading!

a story about blood
a small piece about xy and wwx’s relationship in an au in which xy met yunmeng jiang sect quite earlier in his story. written for @baebeyza for the yiling wei server exchange.
“Get lost, you damn brat!”
The child scrambles off the road just in time not to get crushed by the next cart, cradling his wounded hand. Whatever reply he had dies in his throat, replaced with white-hot hatred almost too violent for his body to contain.
When he makes to stand, a purple-clad arm grabs him and pulls him upright. “Hey, you alright?”
Xue Yang almost spits in the stranger’s face. Who is he, to offer his pity? He didn’t stop Chang Ci’An, or shove his words back down his slimy throat. Everything else is secondary.
The boy in the purple robes doesn’t seem to share his thoughts. Either he’s oblivious to the daggers Xue Yang glares at him, or he simply doesn’t care. When he drags Xue Yang along, he has no choice but to follow. The teenager is bigger and stronger than he is ⎯ though it’s not saying much, given an underfed street rat must weight about as much as a drenched kitten.
Before he can say anything, he’s sat down at an innkeeper’s table, facing another uniformed boy with a furrow between his brows, and the one who pulled him from the street has taken his maimed hand in his, pulling various bottles of salve from his sleeves.
Xue Yang snatches it back with a hiss. The nails of his good fingers rake across the back of the boy’s hand when he reaches for him, making him recoil in return. “Ow, what the hell?”
“That’ll teach you to pick up strays, Wei Ying,” the other grumbles. Xue Yang dislikes him on sight, with his lordling airs and the haughty purse of his lips.
His friend - Wei Ying - has already recovered, rubbing at his grazed skin. “Shut up, Jiang Cheng,” he snaps back, though not unkindly. His eyes - gray as storm clouds - drift over to Xue Yang again. “I’m just trying to help, you know? Stop the bleeding.”
“You’re a cultivator,” is all Xue Yang says. “Like the man in the cart.”
Wei Ying’s face falls. “Oh. Oh, no, I’m not like that.” He sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Listen, if you don’t want me to touch you, it’s fine, I’ll just hand you the bandages, okay?”
Xue Yang eyes him warily, then nods toward the steaming bowls set on the table before him. “And I want the soup too.”
Wei Ying throws his head back and laughs. “Okay, okay! Anyone ever told you you drive a hard bargain?” He slides a set of clean linen strips across the table at Xue Yang, who pounces upon them and stuffs most of them into his pockets before setting to wrapping up his still-bleeding hand. It’s a clumsy job, but better that than let some stranger move him around like a straw doll.
When he’s done, he unceremoniously grabs one of the bowls and all but dumps the contents down his throat. The soup burns his palate, but when the hunger that’s been hounding him around starts to wane, it’s more than worth it.
Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng watch him eat, one with bright-eyed fondness and the other with mild indifference.
“What do you want?” he asks when he’s done eating. It’s simple enough : in his life, no one has ever given something without asking for a favor in return. Though he fails to see what he could give some pampered young masters in exchange for his care, he has no doubt they have some ideas.
“Your name, first.”
“Xue Yang.” So he thinks, anyway. Whoever his mother was barely lived long enough for him to remember the sound of his own name in her voice.
Here comes the real demand, then. He tenses, bracing himself for some other thankless task, maybe even money.
Instead, Wei Ying leans forward, drumming his fingers on the table. Jiang Cheng opens his mouth as if to try and stop him, then seems to think better of it and closes it, staring off to the side with a sullen look. “We saw you fight earlier. You don’t have technique, but you’re pretty fast on your feet, right? Xue Yang, have you ever been to Yunmeng?”
-
Yunmeng is unlike anything Xue Yang has ever seen. The people there never sneer at him or kick him around, though that might be due to the new set of purple robes Wei Ying clumsily ties him into upon arrival.
They're the nicest clothes Xue Yang has ever owned, though he gets blood on them less than a week later, viciously knocking the teeth of a too-touchy disciple with his wooden sword during training. Wei Ying has to wrestle him away by the neck of his clothes, loudly apologizing all the while.
After, as he sullenly nurses the bruised cheek his opponent left him right after he got his hit in, Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng's shijie ( she's your shijie, too, Wei Ying told him solemnly, so you take care of her ) sits him down and serves him freshly steamed buns and a bowl of pork ribs and lotus soup.
Xue Yang doesn't dislike Jiang Yanli. She doesn't look like much, but he can tell being mean to her is not a wise choice – not only because he's been here long enough for him to notice her brothers glaring daggers at anyone foolish enough to be even mildly rude to her, but also because he might actually feel bad if she gets that disappointed look about her again.
“You've got to get a hold of yourself, A-Yang,” she chides gently as she ladles another serving into his bowl. “One day, it'll have worse consequences than a bruised ego.”
“So what do I do?” He peers at her defiantly from behind his mop of dark hair. “Let people...do whatever they want? Like I'm small and–” Weak. Too weak to afford not being the first one to strike.
Jiang Yanli smiles a small, sad smile, and reaches to pat his head. She stops just short of touching his hair, her gaze interrogative.
Xue Yang huffs and doesn't duck away.
“It's alright, A-Yang.” Her voice is so soft, full of pity. Her hand is warm where it lays on top of his head. “You don't need to be strong all the time anymore. We'll be here to protect you.”
He wants her to shut up. He wants her to never stop talking again.
-
Jiang Yanli is a liar, Xue Yang thinks, as the Lotus Pier comes crashing down around him. Her words ring in his ears as he crawls through the smoke, close to coughing his lungs out, the only thing holding him back the looming presence of Wen troops among the ruins.
It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter that she isn't here, or that Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng's fates are uncertain, or that the people he reluctantly started calling his martial brothers and sisters lay in pools of their own blood around him. The other shoe had to drop eventually.
Not all of the cultivators involved in the massacre of the Lotus Pier die at the Yiling Patriarch's hands. Some breathe their last in the dark, as a sword called Jiangzai carves their flesh off their bones, piece by piece.
Wei Ying finds him again, a handful of months later. There is little left of Yunmeng in him, save for the silver bell he tied to Jiangzai's hilt in a fit of sentimentality.
“You’ve been busy,” his shixiong remarks. When his eyes sweep over the scene - gore strewn across the floor, the white of Wen robes almost entirely overtaken by grime -, his eyes glow red as coals.
Xue Yang shrugs. “No more than you have, apparently.” His sleeves are meticulously clean, though his boots have been steeped in blood for longer than he cares to count. Jiang Yanli would point out the change in him, the cruel edge he always carried with him sharpened to a fine point.
Then again, Wei Ying - Wei Wuxian, really, as few dare call him by his birth name now - is not the way he used to be either. Something about him reminds Xue Yang of a corpse risen from the grave, no longer afraid to die, inevitable.
He doesn't flinch when he looks down at the corpse Xue Yang made. It barely resembles a man anymore : lingchi has made a puddle of flesh out of him, white bones peeking out of the crimson wreck.
“I’m surprised no one’s come after you yet. Does everyone approve of your methods?” Even as Wei Wuxian speaks, he sounds like he already knows what answer to expect.
“Am I supposed to care whether they do?” Their home didn’t burn, as far as Xue Yang’s concerned. Well, the Cloud Recesses did, but he’s never known the Lans to be the vengeful type.
Wei Wuxian breaks into a grin. It should have been familiar, as the same lopsided smile he sported whenever his kite flew higher than any of the other disciples or when he pulled one of them into the lake by their ankles, but it is frightening now.
At least, Xue Yang imagines it should be. In it, he can only find a mirror of his own.
“Anyway,” Wei Wuxian continues with a tilt of his head towards the corpses at their feet, “I came to take care of these, but it looks like you’ve got everything handled.”
“I want to come with you.” The words slip past his lips before he can think them through. “That’s not all of them. Wen Chao’s not dead yet.”
Hatred stays with you, he realizes. After so many years without truly feeling it, Xue Yang finds that he hasn’t forgotten its taste.
For the first time since the beginning of their talk, Wei Wuxian seems to waver. “Are you sure?” His gaze takes on a wistful tinge, like the words in his mouth aren’t his own. “Whatever happens, no one will ever look at you the same. You’ll be walking the single-plank bridge with me.”
The implication hangs in the air between them : one stumble, and he will fall. And, of course, there will be no turning back from this.
“You think I don’t know that?” Xue Yang crosses his arms, chin raised, defiant. “I’ve already gone this far anyway. If you can do it, I can do it.”
Something tugs at the corners of Wei Wuxian’s lips, almost like a smile.
-
“Eat or I’ll pour it down your throat myself.”
“You’ve been spending too much time with Wen Qing.” Still, Wei Wuxian reaches for the bowl. Up close, Xue Yang can see what the man himself is refusing to admit : that he’s grown thinner and gaunter with every passing day, crumbling into a shell of himself.
Taking advantage of Wei Wuxian’s distraction, Xue Yang skirts around him and snatches up a page of his notes. It’s covered in scrambly handwriting, as if jotted down in a hurry, but he’s had enough practice by now to decipher the bare bones of it.
“What’s a…” He squints. “...Stygian Tiger Seal?”
Weu Wuxian whirls towards him, wild-eyed. “Put it back!”
Xue Yang raises his hands, cocking an eyebrow at the other. “Not until you tell me what it does.”
For a moment, he thinks Wei Wuxian might actually strike him. He draws himself up to his full height, resentful energy gathering around him quiet as thunder ⎯ and then the fight goes out of him, and he slumps onto the slab of stone he calls a chair again. “It’s supposed to help me,” he explains, running a hand through his soot-stained hair. “It should control the corpses better than I do on my own, like a catalyst.”
Xue Yang considers the notes with newfound interest. “It could change everything.”
“If I manage to do it,” Wei Wuxian points out. “And if I do, you’ll have to keep it to yourself.” At the lack of change in Xue Yang’s expression, he adds, “I mean it. In the wrong hands, it’ll be carnage.”
And what do you plan to bring with it, if not carnage?
He can see, though, that Wei Wuxian will not answer him. The Yiling Patriarch is already lost in thoughts again, half-emptied bowl abandoned on the side as he grabs a stick of charcoal and starts to sketch, muttering something about swords and giant tortoises.
For lack of something better to do, Xue Yang gathers a few more scrolls from under his nose, settles into one of of cave’s corners and starts to read.
-
For better or for worse, Wei Wuxian’s prediction comes true. When, under the cover of night, Xue Yang comes to see the remnants of Nightless City, he can find no other word to describe the scene but carnage.
-
On the last day of autumn, a young man boldly strolls into the Unclean Realm. The cultivators who first run into him will remember him grinning even as his throat bobbed against a saber’s blade, upper lip pulling up over little sharp teeth, until the Sect Leader steps in to break off the fight and announce - to everybody's surprise - he will receive his honored guest in his own desk.
“That artefact you mentioned...” Nie Huaisang starts, snapping his fan shut once the door closes behind them. For a moment, two beasts seize each other up, black against gold. “Do you have it?”
“I thought your being daft was only a facade, Headshaker,” the other snaps back. Still, he reaches into his sleeve. Nie Huaisang’s gaze follows his hand as it draws out a slab of stone shaped like a tiger’s head, crude in design yet unmistakable.
Half of the Stygian Tiger Seal dangles from the young man’s hand. Nie Huaisang has had the occasion to see the original once - granted, from a distance, and not for very long -, but he can tell that though this is a an attempt to recreate Wei Wuxian’s invention, it’s a skilled one. “It’s rather pretty, but does it work?”
His interlocutor shrugs. “You don’t have the other half, do you? I thought you’d have it ready, since you were only in the market for half of it.”
“I will procure it,” he says, perhaps a little more forcefully than he meant to. “In the meantime…”
Nie Huaisang considers the missing half, his eyes heavy-lidded. When he looks up, his gaze has taken on a sharper glint. “It seems we’ve got ourselves a deal, young master Xue.”

Cloud Recess Wrath
Chapter 26: So it goes on
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Beep* *Beep* *Beep* That was all that could be heard in the dead silent hospital room. Just that damn machine telling them their sister was barely clinging to life. When they had entered the room after that gun shot, the one who fired was gone but their sister laid their bleeding out before being transported to surgery.
It had taken 6 nurses to hold down Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng from tearing the hospital down to find the culprit and give them a relaxation medication. The doctors didn’t even allow Wen Ning into the surgery because despite him being a doctor, had too close of a relation with Yanli and his emotions would’ve gotten the better of him.
Now the three sat in the hospital room just waiting for Yanli to wake up, just any sign that she was still alive and it wasn’t just the machine breathing for her.
“Its my fault...” Said Jiang Cheng breaking the silence and surprising Wei Ying and Wen Ning. “I acted without thinking and agitated Wen Chao. And because of that, this happened.” He said.
Though Wen Ning was quick to rebuttal. “No its not your fault Jiang Cheng, I should’ve protected her better. If it’s anyone’s fault its min-“ Before Wen Ning could finish, both were whacked in the back of the head by Wei Ying.
“Its neither your faults so stop blaming yourselves. The only one to blame here is Wen Chao, this is probably all part of his plan. He’s trying to shake us and we can’t let him. And Jiang Cheng, you know Shejie as well as I do. You know she’s a fighter. She’ll wake up soon.” Said Wei Ying, trying to remain the optimistic one in the room.
“Normally I yell at you for whacking me again but I’m not in the mood right now. I know she’s strong but I still worry. Do you really want to me the one that has to tell Jin Ling his mother is dead if she doesn’t wake up?” Cheng said, not bearing that idea of going home to tell his nephew that.
“And we won’t have to tell him that because she’s going to wake up. How about you two go down to the cafeteria and get some air? I’ll stay here and watch Yanli, and I won’t take no for an answer.”
“Pfft, ever the persistent one.” Cheng said, as both him and Wen Ning were shoved out the door.
“Goooo, before I sick the nurse on you.” Wei Ying said, and then shutting the door. Listening as the two walked away and started having a conversation, moments like this he had to play the elder brother card. Once alone and knew they would be gone for a few minutes, his smile faded. “You can come out now. I know your not stupid enough to jump from a 6 story building.” He said, turning around and watching the culprit walk out from his hiding place.
“Well you are right about that. I thought those two would never leave.” Said Wen Chao, trying to get out the crink in his neck he got from hiding.
“What do you want Wen Chao? And why bring my sister into this? She has nothing to do with any of this.” Wei Ying interrogated.
“Isn’t obvious?” Wen Chao said with pride in his voice. “You. I want you.”
“Over my dead body. I’m married now and I highly doubt you wanna see Lan Zhan pissed off, not a pretty sight.”
“Not like that, if I wanted an early death again I would’ve gone after you earlier, I’ve seen your mate pissed off and never again. No I need a favor that only the great ‘Yiling Laozu’ can do.”
“If it’s bringing Wen Zhuliu back then forget it. And why would I help you with anything in the first place-“ Wen Chao cut off Wei Ying’s sentence by pulling out his phone and reading its content on the screen aloud.
“Lan Sizhui. Birth Name: Lan Yuan...no Wen Yuan. Age 15 going on 16. Omega, newly presented. Attends Gusu High School, Freshmen. Shall I continue?” Wen Chao said, enjoying the way the color drained from Wei Ying’s face and his eyes turned blood red.
“W-What are you...Don’t you dare touch my son! If you so much as lay a finger on my baby I’ll personally show you hell!!” Wei Ying yelled, the Yiling Laozu coming out.
“You see I’m not stupid enough to go after you or your alpha that could easily kill me. But your child? Now he’s an easier target. I won’t go after him if you do this one favor for me, and no you don’t have to kill anyone or bring anyone back to life. I just need information.” He said.
“Information on what?” Wei Ying asked, shaking with rage.
“Information on how you escaped death. Because if I remember correctly, you shouldn’t even be alive right now yet someone or something did what they did to me, to you. And I know I’m not crazy because I clearly remember my bullet meeting your head when you tried to leave me. So how?” Wen Chao asked.
“If I tell you will you leave? I don’t care what you do to me but leave my family out of this.”
“I promise, you tell me and I’ll leave your family alone.” Wen Chao said with a smile.
Wei Ying sighed before speaking again. “Mo Xuanyu. When you shot me, you did kill me. But he happened to be walking by and I guess he recognized me as Lan Zhan’s omega. So he performed the same technique used on you to bring me back. I guess he knew what Lan Zhan was capable of and gave up his existence for him.” Wei Ying explained.
“Heh, please. What can your mate do that’s so terrifying? I know this Mo Xuanyu so this doesn’t surprise me.” Wen Chao mocked, now it was Wei Ying’s turn to let out a chuckle.
“You really are stupid. Fine then, consider this bonus information: You may be blind to it but Lan Zhan is not a force to reckon with when pushed to his breaking point. Lan Zhan may look calm and collected, but you push him far enough Wen Chao like you did last time...and you will experience a true alpha’s wrath. Now get out, before you piss Me off.” Wei Ying threatened.
“Fine fine i can take a hint. I’m honestly more scared of you than your alpha so I’ll take my leave. Thanks for the information though, that clears many things up.” Wen Chao said and then he left.
‘Many things up indeed, you were too blinded by your need to protect your family to notice I was recording. You all just keep giving me more and more secrets to tell Huaisang. I wonder how he’ll react to learning what you all kept from him?’
what if lan zhan was in the role of yilling patriarch?
i wrote one about how lan zhan would react to losing wei ying (which you can read here) but now let’s consider if lan zhan were to die and how wei ying would cope w this situation
lan zhan was pushed off the mountain and into the fiery pit by his own brother while wei ying was trying to pull him out
after the fight was over the cultivators collected their dead disciples and in heavy silence headed off to rest for the night
wei ying’s jaw seemed to be wired shut and with every step away from where lan zhan had dissapeared he felt acid rising to his throat
how long has it been? the sun was starting to rise faintly... it hasn’t been a full day yet
wei ying feels the rush before he can stop and he can feel the acid burning it’s way up his throat painfully
he hacks up in the bushes, shijie rubbing his back
“a-xian, are you okay?” she sounds so worried
wei wuxian cant feel his fingers
he smiles faintly, saying the smell of blood made him dizzy
they stay at an inn and plan to return to lotus pier the next day
next day.. a day without lan zhan, huh?
wei ying feels the rush again but this time he swallows it down. coughing violently
his back itches, and he makes an effort of looking into the mirror and sees something peeking out from underneath his robes
he discards his outter robes and pulls out a folded piece of paper
when he opens it up a neat handwriting is staring back at him. he feels his heart slam against his rib age and he actually looks down to make sure it hasn’t burst out of him
“wei ying” the letter starts. wei wuxian feels his heart compress into smaller shape, he can hear the blood in his veins in his ears
AND ITS SO DAMN LOUD
“i write to you in case our separation time comes closer than i’d anticipate”
“i want to let you know, it wasn’t your fault. choosing this path. being this way. it’s my choice. please do not blame yourself”
“and do not mourn me. i will always watch over you, darling”
wei ying has been trying to silence himself but finally he flings himself out of the window and flies up to the roof of the inn, where he can get some privacy
he creates a silencing bubble around himself that stops the noises of dog barkings and also doesn’t let the world hear him
and then he sobs. so loudly. and so much. he cries to the moon. to the one he’s lost
to one and only he had been able to connect to
his hands trembling, his lips dry, and his shoulders missing the other like the separation has happened decades ago
wei wuxian lies down and clutches the letter to his chest, feeling his lungs expand and shrink. he doesn’t have a will to continue reading it
he feels so empty
and the tears just flow, with no indication of stopping
lan zhan is gone
lan zhan is GONE
LAN WANGJI IS GONE
HIS LAN ZHAN IS GONE
feeling like the weight of the world has sat atop his shoulders he continues reading it
“i want to thank you for all you’ve done for me. i want to thank you for staying by my side”
“when i was despised you stood by me. stood in front of me, waving your sword and threatening anyone who had intentions of harming me”
“wei ying. you’re so powerful. you’re so much bigger than you look and so incredibly kind”
“wei ying, i’m sorry”
you have nothing to be sorry for... lan zhan
“i’m sorry for not being worthy of standing by your side. i’m sorry you had to be hated because of me. you destroyed your reputation trying to protect me”
“you can’t do that. that just made it all harder for me to not yearn your closeness”
“i’m evil, wei ying, i’ve hurt many for right reasons, but they don’t view me as someone who freed wens. they view me as murderer”
“wei ying, please, i have one favor, no matter what they say. what kind of insults they mention towards me please... ignore it. wei ying, please, live your life to fullest”
“and one more thing, if there’s small space in your heart to keep me... please don’t forget about me”
“with respect, your lan zhan”
there was no reaction, wei ying just lay on his back. not allowing himself to react
because he knew he’d break down
instead he just lay there, pressing the letter into his chest, as if to pass it into his heart
and he sighed contently, missing someone who’ll be gone, but it’ll be okay
wei ying would be fine. he was told not to grieve because lan zhan would look over him and he believed lan zhan was with him this second
so he sat up, straightened his disheveled hair and spoke into the quiet night
“you don’t have to ask for small space in my heart, because you made the whole thing your home”
THE UNTAMED FAN FIC: THE TANGLED HEART
Chapter 11: FOR YOU, I WOULD
“It won't work. His spiritual power is too strong. Even if he is not using it right now, its power is still beyond our reach.”
In a pitched black colossal room, a big heptagon with a human-sized circle in the center were drawn on the damp ground. Judging from the color and smell, these geometric dimensional shapes were created using human’s blood.
A figure was on one’s knees inside the 7-edges shapes and was arranging a few things in the circle. Once the things were properly lay, the figure stood up with the right hand lifted up in the air and the wrist moved in a circular motion. The dark room suddenly got illuminated by a fire effusing through the splayed fingers. Then, the wrist flicked the fire off its finger into the circle’s perimeter. The belongings that were laid down there caught up in flames. During the process, the formation glowed red light just faintly before it fused, leaving the room pitch-blacked once again.
The same voice reverberated throughout the dark a second time. “I’ve told you. He was too strong. It won’t work this way.”
“Damn it! Why?! Despite the same dominant's blood running through our veins, why does he have to be better than me in everything? I won’t accept this.” The figure stood in the heptagon clenched the fists so tight that nails started to dig into the flesh, causing blood to trickle down the closed palm. “Since this way doesn’t work, I will need to use another way.”
"How?"
"If he is too strong as a whole, then I'll just have to break him into pieces."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the three Lans and Wei Wuxian mounted off their swords in front of Lotus Pier, Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng were already there waiting for them at the entrance. Jin Ling was standing with his arms behind his back looking serious whereas Jiang Cheng stood beside him with his arm folded along with an expression that said I-am-so-wanting-to-kill-somebody.
Since Sizhui couldn’t use his spiritual energy, he had to ride with Jingyi. Given Jingyi’s limited cultivation level combined with the weighting of two people on the sword, they arrived a bit later than their seniors. So when Sizhui got off, he already saw Wei Wuxian was bear-hugging both Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng tightly despite the struggles of the two hosts.
“Urgh…stop hugging every people you meet.” Jin Ling complained when he was fortunate enough to fight his way out of the hug.
“Jin Ling, I don’t just hug anyone. I only hug those I want.” Wei Wuxian pouted at his nephew.
“Which is almost every single living things you encounter.” Jiang Cheng pushed his brother away, his expression turned even grimmer.
“Oh my dear Jiang Cheng. Why do you always have such a scary expression on your face? No wonder you still can’t find yourself a wife.” Wei Wuxian teased his brother and put on an exaggerated sad face.
“You!”
Zidian was emitting purple sparks. Before Jiang Cheng unleashed it into a full form of a whip, Wei Wuxain had already run to hide behind Lan Wangji.
The tension in the air was relieved when Sizhui walked in and gave his greetings towards the hosts. “Greeting Sect leader Jiang. Greeting Sect leader Jin.” He smiled at Jin Ling when addressing him only to get back a diverted gaze in return. Did Jin Ling just avoid my eye contact? Sizhui thought. Still, it was more than suffice for Sizhui to be able to personally confirmed that Jin Ling was safe and sound.
When Zidian was no longer acting up, Wei Wuxian peeked from behind his husband’s back. “By the way Jiang Cheng, how could you kill that man? I mean, not that he doesn’t deserve to die but at least you should have given us a chance to ask him a few questions.”
“Who said I killed him?” Jiang Cheng chided.
“Well, your reputation proceeds you, you know.” Wei Wuxian muttered which caused Jiang Cheng’s eyebrows twitched in anger.
"I didn't kill him." Jiang Cheng said.
“Well, if you didn't kill him, then how did he die? Did his people come to assassinate him to prevent information leakage?”
“No.” Taken everyone by surprise, Jin Ling spoke up in an orotund voice. “I killed him.”
***
After all of them went to the dungeon to see the corpse and let both Sizhui and Jingyi confirmed the bulky man’s identity that he really was their attacker, the older generations went to the guest hall of Lotus Pier to have a discussion while the younger trio went to the pond to wait.
Inside the guest hall, the servants were bringing in snacks and teas for the three seniors. When a servant girl was placing a tea set in front of Wei Wuxian, he naughtily asked, “Hi beauty, do you have wine?”
The girl was bashful to speak when looking at Wei Wuxian’s flirty face. The act earned a clear-throat sound from Lan Wangji and a growl from Jiang Cheng. “Just ignore him and go back to your chores.” He told his servant. The girl did her curtsy and hurried out of the room with her entire face still red.
“Anyway, Jiang Cheng. Why did Jin Ling killed that man? I mean I know his temper but still, it was so unlike him to just kill the guy like that.” Wei Wuxian turned business mode.
“How do you expect me to know when that brat hasn’t told me anything yet? I am not a psychic you know.” Jiang Cheng replied with a gruff.
Like uncle, like nephew. Wei Wuxian’s mind talk to himself when he thought about Jin Ling’s and Jiang Cheng’s temper.
“Then while he was alive in your possession, did you get anything out from him?”
“No. He was unconscious the whole time until this morning.”
“He must have said something that pisses Jin Ling off badly to meet his end so soon then.”
There was a brief silence before Jiang Cheng spoke up. “That guy mentioned something about your son.”
“What? Sizhui?” Wei Wuxian was alarmed and turned to look at Lan Wangji, who changed nothing in either expression or posture. But Wei Wuxian knew his husband well enough from the look of his eyes that he too was appalling. “Well, what did he say then?” he turned to look back to his brother.
“I’d told you I didn’t know. Jin Ling asked me to let him talk alone with the man. So, I left. Then, when he came out of the dungeon, he just said that he had killed the man. What a preposterous brat. And here I’ve thought he is improving now that he becomes a Sect leader.” Jiang Cheng was livid when thinking about the situation back then.
Wei Wuxian was afraid that once Jiang Cheng was done with his anger, he would start to ask about SIzhui so he got up and grabbed Lan Zhan. “We have something urgent to take care of Jiang Cheng. See you later.” Wei Wuxian shouted his goodbye while walking out the guest hall without bothering to even look back.
Jiang Cheng was left fuming at his two blood-related people's unreasonable behaviors today.
Wei Wuxian asked his husband when they had walked passed the crowded place into quiet section in Lotus Pier. “Lan Zhan, can you play your qin to do the Inquiry? I want to know what that jackass has said about Sizhui.”
Lan Wangji shook his head. “I can’t, Wei Ying.”
“Why?”
“Jin Ling didn’t just kill him. He destroyed the soul as well.”
***
Along the way to the pond, Sizhui couldn’t help but felt that Jin Ling seemed to keep avoiding his eye contact. Even during their conversation, he would look anywhere: Sizhui’s feet, robes, hands. Except the eyes. Though he replied Sizhui’s questions and talked normally in his usual tone, Sizhui couldn’t wave off the feeling that something was off.
Jingyi, of course, noticed none of these details. He was being his talkative self, pulling pranks and making jokes. He claimed that today was the happiest day of all because first, he defeated the giant beast and earned a praise from Hanguang-Jun. Second, the man that attacked them was dead so Sizhui was no longer in danger. He kept on blabbering things the entire way. Only when they reached the pond full of lotuses did he stopped talking.
“Wow. It is beautiful." Jingyi stared at the pond with his mouth opened in amazement. They had been to Lotus Pier a few times but today the pond was full of blooming flowers. A sight that he had never seen just yet.
"Yes, it does." Sizhui was also captivated by the beautiful sight.
"Oh, I’ve heard from Senior Wei that lotus seeds in Lotus Pier are the best.” Jingyi said.
“Of course it is. It belonged to my uncle and my mother after all.” Jin Ling said proudly.
“Sizhui, do you want to try some? Senior Wei also said the freshly picked are the best of the bests.” Jingyi took off his outer robes and boots before proceeding to roll his sleeves up.
“W-What are you doing?” Jin Ling asked in astonishment when he saw Jingyi stripping.
“What do you think I am doing? Taking off my clothes of course. Do you expect me to go into the pond fully clothed?” Jingyi rolled his eyes.
Jin Ling turned his red face away.
“Jingyi, you’re not thinking of picking those lotus seeds right now, are you?” Sizhui asked.
“That’s right, Sizhui.”
“But this pond belongs to Sect Leader Jiang. You have to get his permission first or else we are breaking our Lan’s rule.”
“Rest assure Sizhui. I already got permission from Senior Wei. He also belongs to The Jiang Sect, remember?” Jingyi winked and went down to the pond. “Ow. So cold.” He murmured complain yet kept on going.
Shrugging, Sizhui turned to look at Jin Ling only to see that Jin Ling was already staring at him. But again, he quickly looked away when Sizhui’s eyes were on him. He could no longer stand this. He must find out the reason behind Jin Ling’s odd behavior.
“Sect leader Jin” Sizhui finally broke the silence. He sensed the other party’s body stiffen.
“Yeah?” a faint reply came out from Jin Ling’s mouth yet he still refused to turn his way.
“Did I do anything to offend you?” Sizhui asked.
“What make you think that?”
“Well, because you have been avoiding my eyes this whole time. So I thought you are angry with me.”
“If I were, I wouldn’t have had talked to you.”
“Then, can you tell me why you don’t look at me when we are having a conversation right now?”
Clicking his tongue, Jin Ling said. “You Lans people are so persistent. Do you really have to get an answer to every question?”
Sizhui felt a pinch in his chest. Why did it feel so painful upon hearing those words? This was a pain he had never experienced before. Sizhui went silent as he was analyzing the foreign illness that was infiltrating his heart.
When Jin Ling no longer heard Sizhui’s voice, he thought the boy wasn’t feeling assured, so he repeated again. “I really am not mad at you.”
It still didn’t put his heart at ease even with this second confirmation because Jin Ling was still looking away. He couldn’t see the expression on Jin Ling’s face at all so he had no idea if Jin Ling was telling the truth. But he accepted it anyway because at the very least, those words came from Jin Ling’s own mouth. Knowing that no one was able to see, he still put up a weak smile and said “It’s good that you are not mad then.”
Jin Ling took a deep breath. “Now that I have given answer to your question, can you also help with mine?”
“What is it that you want to know?”
“It’s about the man who attacked you.” Sizhui held his breath and waited for Jin Ling to continue. “Have you known each other before?”
Sizhui felt his hands trembling. Did he know? And this was why he had been acting strange? Sizhui thought to himself as he tried to hide his shaking hands under his sleeves and maintained his smile. “I don’t know him but I can’t say the same vice versa. His words and actions seemed to show that he has known me.”
“I see. Then…” For the first time today, Jin Ling turned to stare into Sizhui’s eyes without blinking. “Lan Sizhui, is there something else you wish to tell me?”
Sizhui’s weak smile faltered. He somehow got a glimpse of what Jin Ling was referring to. But the question still remained. Was he ready to tell?
Sozin´s curse - Dementophobia
It is a cool winter morning as Azula makes her Katas in the palace garden. She is clad in pure white robes, completed by gloves and fine white shoes, all made of the same, delicate fabric.
The only disruption in her attire are the golden Fire Nation crown, that holds the princess´s dark hair tightly under control and the golden necklace with the dark red ruby she received on the day of her first birthday from the Firelord.
The amber eyes of the princess narrow as she struggles with herself. She still remembers the first time she had to do this exercise, focus the Chi in her body for firebending, yet keep the energy under control so no flame forms.
She had burned her hand that day and her father had looked at her with disgust. Her mother had not even looked at her. The six year old girl had shivered under her father´s gaze more than from the pain and since that day never burned herself again.
But something had changed these days. Azula was uneasy for some time now and it got worse. As long as the sun lit the world everything was fine, but with dusk came the feeling. It was like a cold, damp blanket that was thrown over her soul, as if her inner self lost its color and shape with the darkening world and turned grey and gloomy. The cool, calculating Azula that she had shaped herself into vanished. She managed to keep the outside look, but inside her the emotions boiled each night. The girl felt things that she could not explain. Some kind of sadness, that weakened her body and mind, drowned her inner strength and made her Chi flow slow down and almost cut her off. Then there were outburst of fury, fear, rage and then somehow moments of tranquility, where she could almost...see things that escaped the eye. It was as if something waits just outside the grasp of her mind for the right moment to slip into place, like a key in the lock.
The wind plays with the strands of Azula´s hair and carries with it the salty smell of the sea, that reminds her...
...of the crushed shipwrecks at Kyoshi Island as the dolphin piranhas preyed on the dead and wounded of her people
...of the long gone days at Ember Island. A faint huff escapes Azula´s lips as she pushes the thought aside and lets the Chi swell in her fingers, ready to burst out of her body in a stream of blue fire, there she balances the energy by sheer power of will and focus, as she spins around on one foot and elegantly points two fingers at the imaginary target, to then hop up and kick thin air, again making her firebending moves, with her Chi held at the edge of bursting out, never allowing it to leave of float back inside. The exercise is actually much more exhausting than real bending, what is one of the reasons for her to do it.
Long years of training allow her to move on the soft grass like a ghost, while she feels every stone and clump of grass through the thin shoes.
She makes a salto and bends without flames, sweat glistens on her forehead by now. The exercise is still taking and the focus hard to keep up while making all these moves, she will need in a real fight.
It is even harder as she had not much sleep this night.
A nightmare that she couldnt really recall as she opened her eyes had woken her early. And as she lay there in her bed, one had cramped around her own throat she had experienced a weird, scary moment where she didn´t even know who she was.
I am Azula, daughter of the Firelord and heir to the throne!
She recalls that moment against her own will. Panic that slowly faded back. Still the feeling of threat and danger remained.
Usually she could open her windows and let the rising sun burn away her newfound feelings.
This morning the feeling had withstood the sun and carried on till now.
And then it happenes. A small spark forms and turns the white glove on Azula´s left hand dark, then the fabric starts to burn.
She freezes in the bending pose, her eyes stare at the spreading flame.
"Azula!" she hears the two old hags behind her.
"You are starting..."
"...to loose it."
They say, finishing each other´s sentences as usually. And usually Azula doesn´t care. Li and Lo are trusted servants of her family and she has known them for her whole life.
But now they witness Azula fail at an exercise she has mastered years ago. That burns inside her as her will reaches out with the build up anger and frustration to push she heat of the flames outside, making the flames grow substantially.
The old women stare at Azula as she turns around to them, her hand now covered in the burning glove, yet she does not seem to notice...or care.
"I KNOW!" she shouts at them and blows at the burning glove, her breath is a faint, bluish flame that scorches the rest of the glove off her hand and turns it into flakes of ashes that are dancing in the wind. Her hand is soft and unscathed as the flames die out.
Then with blazing amber eyes she starts to walk over to the two, who stand near the pond next to a small tree. Zuko had loved that place...Azula can recall that picture of him...with mother. They had seemed so happy there, mother had smiled and laughed, hugged her son and been the perfect image of a loving parent...for Zuko.
"Enough of this nonsense for today!" she hisses at the two, who shake their heads in unison.
"You need..."
"...to finish your training."
"now more than ev...."
They stop as Azula suddenly starts to wave her arms in long, drawn out bows around her. Blue energy sizzles under her fingers as Azula seperates Ying and Yang.
"I´m quite ready!" she shouts out as she points her fingers at the two. Both women duck and hug each other as Azula´s lightning jumps of her fingers, over the two women´s heads and rips the upper half of the tree apart. Azula gives the view a cold smile. That was her first time with a working lightning and it made clear to the two, that Azula does not need any more of their useless exercises.
Still shocked Li and Lo watch with big eyes as Azula storms at them. Without stopping or even slowing down she raises one foot, slips the shoe off, repeats the same with the other one and then, again without slowing down a little, rips the robes and remaining glove off her body, so she is clad in nothing but her undergarments. The golden necklace with the delicately crafted flame of the Fire Nation seems to glow in the sunlight as she reaches the two, the dove egg sized ruby makes it look like a living flame that burns on her chest.
"Now excuse me" she says in a still angered, but mostly annoyed voice as she balls the cloth in her hands and throws it up in the air, where she obliterates her clothes with a flash of fire, that trickles over Li and Lo as fine ashes.
"But I need a change."
With that she turns around and leaves the intimidated old women alone, as the poor tree cracks behind them and falls into the pond, what makes the two women shriek out.
Still infuriated, mostly about herself, although she had no intention let anyone know that, Azula openes the door to her chambers.
The room is dark, the servants had, after they took care of the large bed, shut the heavy curtains and as Azula closes the door behind her, darkness takes reign. She still walkes through the room, she kows her own chambers well and her senses are sharp. Father would not approve of any carelessness of his daughter. Training had helpled to make the young girls easily find her path in dim light or even with her other senses. She should never be taken off guard by something as puny as darkness.
And in the twilight of her room she can see well enough...
...the corpses of the fallen. Burned, maimed and crushed in the brutal melee under the city.
...to find her desk near the window. She takes a seat at the chair standing next to it and looks into the mirror. A faint shiver makes the mirror image dance in front of her eyes. Azula frownes. The figure in the mirror looks like...
...the skeletonized body of her old teacher
...it is glowing softly. Startled by the view Azula bends forward as she thinks to see a glow in her mirror image´s eyes.
Terror
With a shriek the princess jumps on her feet.
Sadness
She stumbles backwards, the chair seems to have turned into a beast with arms that grabs her feet.
Loneliness
She falls on the heavy curtain with a loud thud, shivering helplessly.
HATE!
Darkness takes her away and she dreams of a dark, red sky and the cries of the dying air nomads.
Chapter 116: Family Feast 3
Final translation of the Family Feast extra, don’t forget the first two parts! You will also see how this ties in with the Yunmeng date extra that I translated before.
Enjoy! ٩(◦`꒳´◦)۶
This chapter contains some mild spoilers for the main story.
Family Feast 1 / Family Feast 2 / Family Feast 3
The more deadpan Lan Wangji was, the less Wei Wuxian was able to hold back his inner desire to cause mischief.
Fingers lightly tracing the small cup made in black pottery, he let out a minute sound audible only for the two of them. Hearing it, Lan Wangji's line of sight imperceptibly deviated a few inches in his direction.
Wei Wuxian knew that the change in Lan Wangji's line of sight meant that the latter could certainly follow his every move from the corner of his eyes while remaining proper in appearance. Thus, he lifted the small cup and shifted his posture as if he meant to drink. He turned the cup in his hand until he faced the same place where Lan Wangji had just drunk. Then, his lips covered the rim of the small cup.
Lan Wangji's hands were properly placed in his lap but as expected, his fingers curled slightly beneath the white sleeves in reaction while his posture was still unchanged.
Wei Wuxian felt smug at seeing this and momentarily relaxed. Returning to his former posture, he was on the verge of involuntarily slackening his bearing when a stern cough suddenly came through from Lan Qiren's direction. Wei Wuxian hurriedly straightened up and resumed a properly still and upright sitting position.
The soup finished, a moment of calm followed before the meals were formally served. On each table [1], there were three sorts of small side dishes and each tiny dish was either green or white. It was identical to the food Wei Wuxian ate during the time he studied there. In so many years, nothing has changed except the increased bitterness. One's taste was determined partly by one's region of origin, partly by one's innate nature. In Wei Wuxian's case, his tastes were decidedly marked, he enjoyed eating spicy and the lack of meat displeased him. Faced with these bland dishes, he lost all appetite. After two or three of these going down his stomach without him paying attention, he was completely unable to say what he has eaten. Meanwhile, Lan Qiren's gaze would occasionally flick in his direction, staring at him fiercely in the same way he did in the past during lectures, ready at any moment to yell his name and shout at him to get lost. But contrary to his expectations, Wei Wuxian quite uncharacteristically behaved himself. Left powerless, he had no other choice but to give up.
After finishing the insipid meal, the house servants removed the plates and tables. Lan Xichen began a customary summary of the recent family affairs. But after only a few sentences, Wei Wuxian noticed that preoccupation seemed to weigh on Lan Xichen's heart to the extent that he recalled wrong the places of two night hunts. He did not realise it even after finishing speaking despite the sidelong glances cast by Lan Qiren whose goatee quivered several times. After listening for a while, Lan Qiren couldn't refrain from finally opening his mouth to interrupt. Thus, the terrifying but ultimately harmless family feast was hastily brought to an end.
A gloomy beginning, a gloomy process, a gloomy end. Being forced to partake in the gloomy atmosphere for nearly two hours with neither delicacy to eat nor song for entertainment, Wei Wuxian felt as oppressed and restless as if he were covered with fleas. After the conclusion, Lan Qiren stubbornly called in a severe tone Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji, looking as if he wanted to admonish and lecture them. Without anyone to reproach him for acting wildly, Wei Wuxian wandered around. He saw several young disciples walking together in small groups of two or three. He was on the verge of greeting them and grabbing them to have fun when Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi and the others saw him, their faces changing abruptly. They turned round and left.
Wei Wuxian understood clearly and made his way to the deserted depths of the forest. He waited for a while before the same young disciples from before sneakily appeared. Lan Jingyi said, "Senior Wei, we didn't want to ignore you on purpose but Sir said that anyone speaking with you would copy the family rules of the Lan Sect again…"
'Sir' was the title used universally by the juniors and the disciples of the Gusu Lan Sect for Lan Qiren. The word 'Sir' could only refer to him alone. Pleased with himself, Wei Wuxian said, "It's fine, I already knew that. Your family's Sir has long been protecting you against fire, thieves and Wei Ying. Did you see that? He probably thinks of his own family members as carefully-nurtured cabbages in danger of being dug out by a pig [2]. It's unavoidable that he gets so angry, hahahaha…"
Lan Jingyi, "…"
Lan Sizhui, "… Hahaha."
After finishing laughing, Wei Wuxian said, "Oh, that's right, you were copying as punishment earlier. I heard it was because you went on a night hunt with Wen Ning." Addressing Lan Sizhui, he asked, "How is he these days?"
Lan Sizhui replied, "At the moment, he is probably hiding in some nook at the bottom of the mountain. He is waiting for us to find him the next time we go night hunting." After thinking a bit, he added in a worried tone, "Anyway, Sect Leader Jiang seemed extremely furious when we parted, I hope it didn't make things difficult for him."
Wei Wuxian, "What? Jiang Cheng? How come you ran into him during a night hunt?"
Lan Sizhui, "We decided last time to meet up with young master Jin for a night hunt together, so…"
Wei Wuxian understood straightaway.
He could guess that Wen Ning was unlikely to stay idle when Lan Sizhui went on a night hunt with the others. He must have followed them in secret to protect them with the intent to come to their help in case of an emergency during the night hunt. At the same time, Jiang Cheng definitely followed Jin Ling surreptitiously himself lest something might betide him. Thereupon, the two ran into each other during a moment of crisis. Wei Wuxian naturally wanted to inquire what happened next and was torn between amusement and dismay at the situation.
After a pause, he asked instead, "How are Sect Leader Jiang and Jin Ling?"
After Jin Guangyao's death, the only one close in lineage for the succession of the Lanling Jin Sect was Jin Ling. However, there were numerous old people belonging to branch families who eyed covetously from the sidelines and who were beginning to stir upon seeing an opportunity arise. The Lanling Jin Sect was met outside with the ridicule and scorn of a multitude of sects and every person within the Sect itself harboured sinister designs in their minds. Jin Ling was only a teenager, how could he keep the situation under control? In the end, it was Jiang Cheng who intervened by climbing up Golden Koi Tower raising Zidian. He settled things down by taking the position of head of the household for the time being. It was difficult to predict how the situation might evolve in the future.
Lan Jingyi pouted, "They seemed pretty well. Sect Leader Jiang is the same old, he loves taking out his whip at any change he gets. The young mistress' temper improved a lot. His uncle used to scold him for every three sentences he spouted, now it's ten sentences."
Lan Sizhui admonished him, "Jingyi, how can you speak of people like this behind their backs?"
Lan Jingyi defended himself, "I would obviously speak like this to their face."
Hearing Lan Jingyi's manner of speaking, Wei Wuxian let out a small sigh.
He knew inwardly that these were not the questions he truly wanted to ask but since it sounded like Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling were doing all right, there was nothing else to say.
He stood up and patted the hem of his clothes, "That's fine. It's pretty good this way, they can stay like this. You guys go on playing, I have something to do first."
Lan Jingyi blustered, "You have been idle the whole time you've been in the Cloud Recesses and now you have something to do!"
Without turning back, Wei Wuxian retorted, "I'm going to have a nibble of cabbage!"
Unused to waking up this early in the morning, he returned to the Jingshi and covered his head to sleep for a while. Day turned into night and it was already dusk by the time he woke up. He had missed dinner and there was nothing for him to eat. Wei Wuxian didn't feel hungry, while waiting he resumed rummaging around to find Lan Wangji's old copybooks and papers in order to take a look at them. He kept waiting until nightfall came and yet his cabbage still did not return.
At this moment, Wei Wuxian noticed the hollow feeling in his stomach. Estimating the time of the day, he realised that it was already past the curfew of the Cloud Recesses. According to the family rules, people without fixed duties couldn't go out during night time and even less venture beyond the walls. Wei Wuxian wished he could trade places with his younger self who didn't have to care about 'do not do this and that', 'this and that is forbidden' and whose only concerns were eating when he was hungry, sleeping when he was tired, running away when he got into trouble. But now the circumstances were different. If he did not abide by the rules, it would reflect badly on Lan Wangji who was the one accountable. No matter how hungry or tired he was, he had to endure it and could only let out a deep sigh.
A faint sound outside the Jingshi came through at this precise moment and the door was softly pushed open.
Lan Wangji had come back.
Wei Wuxian lay on the floor, pretending to be dead.
He could only hear the sounds of Lan Wangji's light footsteps as the latter went to the writing desk to place several objects on it, all without saying a word. Wei Wuxian wanted at first to keep playing dead but as Lan Wangji seemed to open the lids of the things he placed, a compellingly strong fragrance instantly overwhelmed the crisp scent of sandalwood that formerly pervaded the Jingshi.
Wei Wuxian rolled on the floor and got up, exclaiming, "Er-Gege! I'm forever grateful to you!"
Lan Wangji's expression was unchanged as he took out the dishes from their cases on the writing desk. Wei Wuxian fluttered to his side and saw five or six snow-white plates all containing fiery red bits and slices. At the sight, his heart was filled with joy and a red light was kindled in his eyes, he said, "Hanguang-Jun, you're way too polite, that's so thoughtful of you to bring dishes especially for me. Just call me if you need anything in the future."
Lan Wangji took out last a pair of chopsticks made of white ivory and lay them across the bowl. He intoned, "Eat without speaking."
Wei Wuxian, "You also say rest without speaking. Why don't you stop me when I speak so much and scream so loudly every night?"
Lan Wangji glanced at him. Wei Wuxian, "Fine, fine, I won't speak anymore. We're both the way we are, you are the easily flustered type who can't bear to lose face, that's how I like you. Did you bring them from the Hunan restaurant in Caiyi Town?"
Lan Wangji did not give an answer and Wei Wuxian understood it as tacit agreement. Taking a seat by the writing desk, he said, "I wasn't sure if that Hunan restaurant had closed or not. We used to go there to eat in the past, otherwise we could only have your Sect's food. I was afraid I wouldn't survive these few months. Hey, look at this, this is called a family feast."
Lan Wangji, " 'We?' "
Wei Wuxian, "Me and Jiang Cheng. Sometimes, there was Nie Huaisang and a few other people."
Casting a sidelong glance at Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian said with a smile, "Why are you looking at me like this? Hanguang-Jun, don't forget, I did invite you to eat with me at a restaurant in the past. I used so much enthusiasm and put so much effort. It was you yourself who refused. You would glare at me whenever I spoke to you and every one of your sentences would start with the word 'No'. I hit so many snags because of you. I haven't got even with you and yet you're actually displeased. Speaking of which…"
Rubbing against Lan Wangji's side, he said, "I was worried about breaking the rules at first so I had to resist the urge of sneaking off. I waited for you inside the room nicely and obediently. Who would have thought it would actually be you, Hanguang-Jun, who broke the rules by going out to find me something to eat. Your uncle will have a heart attack if he knows about this."
Lan Wangji bowed his head and embraced him, wrapping his waist. He stayed still without moving, looking peaceful. However, Wei Wuxian could feel distinctly the gentle strokes made intentionally or not by the fingers at his waist. The warm fingers left a burning hot trail that seeped through his clothes and into his skin. Wei Wuxian returned the embrace and whispered, "Hanguang-Jun… I drank your family's medicinal soup and now there's this bitter taste filling my mouth. I can't eat anything, what's to be done?"
Lan Wangji, "One sip."
Wei Wuxian, "Right. I only drank one sip. I don't know who made your family's soup but the aftertaste is really strong, the bitterness spread from the tip of my tongue to the back of it and into my throat. Tell me quick, what's to be done?"
After a moment of silence, Lan Wangji replied, "Neutralisation."
Wei Wuxian humbly asked for his advice, "How to neutralise it?"
Lan Wangji lifted his face.
There was a wisp of medicinal fragrance suffusing the space between their lips. The faint bitterness made the kiss linger even longer.
After separating with great difficulty, Wei Wuxian said softly, "Hanguang-Jun, I just remembered. You drank two cups of that medicinal soup, you should taste even bitterer than me."
Lan Wangji, "Mmh."
Wei Wuxian, "But what I taste is pretty sweet, that's really strange."
"…" Lan Wangji, "Eat first."
After a pause, he added, "After eating, we can do things."
Wei Wuxian, "I want to eat cabbage first."
Lan Wangji slightly knitted his eyebrows, appearing somewhat puzzled. Why the sudden mention of cabbage? Wei Wuxian laughed happily and wrapped his arms around his neck.
It was more appropriate to close the door of the so-called family feast than to open it.
Translator's notes
[1] What I translate as table looks more like a tray for one person sitting on the floor. I picture the scene as similar to this image.
[2] 'Cabbages dug out by a pig' (好白菜都让猪拱了) is an idiom referring to good things being wasted. Chinese cabbage (also called napa cabbage or bok choy) is a staple in Chinese cuisine and also a symbol of prosperity as it is pronounced similarly to 'one hundred wealth'.
Eve of Destruction
Summary: Everyone has a past, some more honorable than others. After a mission gone wrong, Bucky has no choice but to visit one of the darkest parts of his, the only glimmer of hope being you….if only you can forgive him after all this time..
Word Count: 2038
Song Pairing: Eve of Destruction- Berry McGuire
Authors note: This will be a mini-series so if you want to be tagged just comment below!
**if you comment or reblog my fics theres now a 110% chance I’d die for you**
You pulled out your dagger from the body laying at your feet, “Oh fuck me”. Cleaning your favorite weapon you rubbed it against your leg, the blood not showing against your black pants. Bucky continued to hold Steve up, “Doll I had too-”.
“Don’t doll me Barnes, it’s been five years. You really think bringing pretty boy here is a good idea?”.
Sam began to get a little ancy, knowing that Steve wouldn’t be able to hold on much longer. He parted his lips to speak but Bucky narrowed his eyes, silenting telling him to not make this any worse.
Bucky sighed, “Look, you want his blood on your hands? You know what he means to me (y/n)”. Looking up at the sky you groaned, knowing that this was a bad idea but you had too.
You began, “Within two seconds of you being here someone’s already tried to challenge you, and if I hadn’t been here to take em out it would’ve been your ass on the floor”.
For affect you nudged the dead body at your feet, hoping it would remind Bucky of the severity of this entire situation. He tried to answer but you continued, “You’re lucky nostalgia is a bitch..follow me and don’t say anything until we’re in my room okay?”.
Bucky nodded his head, and after you turned around he smirked. Under his breath Sam said, “If you’re wrong about this place, I’ll make sure it is your ass on the floor”. Taking a step toward he helped carry Steve, easing the weight.
The three of them were currently on a secret mission, Steve abandoning the title of Captain America and all its’ restrictions, and finally doing some dirty work. Following up on an old hydra lead from Bucky’s past had lead them here.
Hecate’s Crossroads. A safe haven for mercenaries and criminals alike, a sort of playground for the worst of the worst. In Greek mythology Hecate was a shapeshifter goddess of dark and forbade forces, it seemed only fit to name the place after her.
It hid in plain sight, what appeared to be a hotel to most was actually an oasis for those who lived on the darker side of life. It had been a second home to Bucky when he was the winter soldier, which was how he knew to bring an extremely injured Steve here.
The men followed behind you, watching you type in your six digit code to leave the back alley and enter the building, and then another four digit code to enter the elevator and go to your correct floor and room.
Sam had thought he’d seen it all, but everything he was witnessing now was completely new to him. There were your classic goons and thugs, drug pushers and dealers, but there were also people with super abilities.
If Steve hadn’t been going in and out of consciousness he would’ve been just as shocked and intrigued. After what seemed like the hundreth code the men finally entered your room, Sam shocked once again to see how nice it was.
“Do I even wanna know how you pay for this?”. The men hoisted Steve onto your huge marble kitchen countertop, an almost makeshift operating table. While beginning to get to work you teased, “Hmm let’s pretend I get paid a $100 for every confirmed kill”.
After seeing the look in Sam’s eyes while trying to do that math Bucky intervened, “She’s kidding Sam”. Sam calmed down for a moment until he watched you silently mouth “no I’m not”. He sighed and instead chose to focus on Steve.
As you rolled up your sleeves Bucky opened multiple cabinets getting various herbs and crystals, this wasn’t the first time you’d both done this. He laid them around and on top of Steve, hitting all the right areas.
You rolled your head in a circle and cracked various bones, prepping your body for what you were about to do. After closing your eyes you told Bucky, “You owe me big time James”. That was the first time Sam had ever heard anyone called Bucky by his real name, not even Steve did it.
Unfazed Bucky nodded his head and let you get to work. As you slowly began to repeat an incantation various patterns appeared on your skin and began to glow a vibrant blue. Sam marveled as he watched the same patterns appear on Steve.
The longer you spoke the more vibrant the colors became, and they also grew and expanded. Within no time Steve’s entire body was glowing, and so was yours. Bucky smiled as he looked at Sam and how amazed he was.
Bringing your hands closer together you moved your fingers, a now navy ball of energy forming between your palms. Looking to Steve again Sam saw that same ball of energy surround Steve’s heart before almost exploding and reaching every inch of Steve’s skin as it disappeared.
The room fell silent as Steve began to wake up, his eyes glowing an intense dark blue for a moment. Abruptly he sat up, just as shocked as Sam when he realized he didn’t need any recovery time.
You weren’t just any normal human, you were half terran and half something else. You didn’t know much about your mother, but your father hadn’t been lying when he’d said she’d been special.
She’d given you your powers; they were almost like a ying and yang kinda thing. You had the ability to heal just about anyone or anything, but that could just as easily shift as to inflicting an umberable amount of pain.
You past hadn’t been perfect, especially when people realized how much damage you could cause, so you refrained from using them as much as you could.
“All fixed, now get pretty boy out of here before anyone else realizes you’re back James”. Following the sound of your voice Steve turned toward you, not only wondering who the hell you were but why you’d just called Bucky by his real name.
The sound of the door beginning to unlock made everyone tense up, and once again you reached for your dagger. Quickly Steve got off of the counter and took his fighting stance between Bucky and Sam.
The door crashed open, “Honeybuns I’m home- holy fuck you didn’t tell daddypool you were bringing home America’s sweetheart and his emo boyfriend! I would’ve freshened up”. Everyone eased up when they realized it was only Wade.
Pulling off his mask Wade moaned, “God sometimes it feels like I’m trapped inside a big red condom..I know safe sex is great sex..but I’d rather let life fuck my raw”. Sighing in annoyance you left the kitchen and joined him.
“It looks like it already has”. Wade threw the nearest pillow at you, hoping to stop your laughter. He narrowed his eyes, “Laugh all you want, but I know I’m totally in your clit-flicks”.
“Did you just try to do the female version of spank-bank..what is wrong with you?”. After answering with pretty much everything, Wade jumped up from the couch and entered the kitchen.
Like a complete animal he started to rummage through the cabinets looking for food. After stuffing his mouth as soon as he could he pointed to the countertop, “I see you’ve started the virgin sacrifice without me”.
Sam genuinely laughed for the first time all day, loving the insinuation that Steve was still a virgin. You turned to Steve, “It’s nice to meet you but like I said, you guys can’t be here”.
Steve didn’t even know where here was, and as he looked to Bucky he saw an almost shameful look on his face. Sam was sold, “I’d like to listen to the scary lady, let’s go before the lights go off and we wake up without kidneys”.
“Don’t worry Tweety, we go straight for the heart around here because it’s worth the big bucks”. Wade finished his sentence with a smile before stuffing his mouth again. Bucky took a step forward, “We’ll be on our way doll, thank you”.
You didn’t know why, but you felt a pang of regret after hearing him say those words. He looked at you solemnly, and you wondered if he’d felt the same way you had. You’d both be lying if you said the first time he’d left had gone smoothly.
Before anyone could say anything, you heard the worst sound anyone could hear in Hecate’s Crossroads, the lockdown alarms sounded throughout the entire building. Knowing what that meant Bucky immediately tensed up.
“James what did I tell you? Now we’re all stuck here until he decides we can go”.
Looking around the room metal suddenly surrounded all the windows and exits, literally locking you in the building. It was part of the protocol, someone would press a button and all exits would be blocked off.
Steve grew impatient hearing you call Bucky by his real name, it wasn’t that he was jealous it was that you obviously meant something to Bucky and he’d had no idea who you were. Wade put his mask back on, “You went and pissed of the big guy, even I don’t wanna poke that bear”.
“Buck, you need to start talking”. As Bucky looked to Steve he was filled with guilt. Bucky knew that this was a huge secret to keep, but right now he couldn’t tell Steve everything. You stepped forward, “No. We all need to get suited up and find out what he wants”.
Steve’s annoyance was more visible, “Who”. Steve continued to hold Bucky’s gaze, surprised to see his friends entire expression change. Bucky opened the cabinets under the sink, happy to see that’s still where you’d stocked your weapons.
“Titan”, Bucky answered while cocking his old favorite gun that you’d somehow kept all these years. The fact that it was just a one word answer scared both Steve and Sam, as if solely his name explained how dangerous this all was.
Wade laughed almost insanely, “Oh you think we’re bad news? That guy makes Hitler look like as intimidating as one of the fucking teletubbies…Laa-Laa though not Tinky-Winky because he’s seen some shit you know?”.
Slapping Wade behind the head got him to shut right up. Steve put his emotions aside, “So, what’s the plan”. Suddenly everyone in the room looked to you, making you look up at the sky and curse again.
There was another announcement that sounded through the entire intercom, Steve thankful that all you swears were now muffled. The voice was Titan himself, something that rarely happened.
It appears someone has brought Captain America here, and no one is leaving until we find his star-spangled ass and see if he really bleeds red, white, and blue. The doors of your rooms will unlock in five, which means his ass better be brought to the penthouse in ten.
It was like you’d asked the universe if things could get any worse, and it was doing it’s best to show you they could. Titan’s announcement would result in nearly every goon hunting down Steve, and you.
Before anyone could say anything Bucky held your gaze, for a moment acting as if it was just the two of you. His expression was soft, “I promise I won’t let you lose control, I won’t leave this-”.
If you let him continue his sentence you would’ve started crying. You needed to fight all the memories that were trying to resurface, “Let’s just promise to all make it out alive”. It wasn’t much, but Bucky knew it was the best you could do.
It was more than you owed him really, given everything he’d done it was a miracle you’d even helped Steve for him. Wade looked down at his adventure time watch, “We can save the longing glances and eye-sex for a later date, we got four minutes until this turns into a real life game of saw”.
You nodded your head, daring not to even look at Bucky right now because all the emotions running through you. You’d been right, nastologia was a bitch and it was making you realize that maybe you’d never stopped loving Bucky to begin with…
