cloud wraps his arms around himself, cold but stubbornly refusing to accept that he is cold. he would take being under blankets, napping somewhere. but everyone is a pain. he nods at reno.

"That's unfortunate."

"Ahhh... The sweet solitude away from civilization," Reno sighs with delight. "I cleared the area out of monsters before bringing you here, so we needn't worry about anyone or anything interrupting our peace."

"Very delightful, yes... Were one to ignore this ceaseless downpour of rain, that is," Severian deadpans. "I did not take you for the type to spirit away his conquests out in such horrid weather conditions."

Reno laughs heartily to that.

"They say that like attracts like, sweetheart," Reno says with a smile, "And don't act like you didn't accept the offer willingly. Why, I only had to ask once this time for you to abandon that old desk of yours!"

"And as a result, I will no doubt return later and find said desk buried under a pile of overdue work," Severian Scoffs. "Remind me again why I ever thought this decision to be wise."

Reno hums in contemplation, though his expression clearly conveys the mischief intended.

"Could it perhaps be..." Reno says, and leans closer to Severian's ear as his voice drops then to the softest of whispers, "That you wanted to spend time alone with me that much?"

Severian shudders from the way Reno's breath gently tickles against his ear. "Shameless brat..." he murmurs.

Reno isn't wrong, per se... but Severian still isn't used to being open about such sentiments. Outside of the usual guild halls, Severian finds that he is out of his element, and it reminds him of just how much of Reno's life he does not have access to.

It's just how things are, of course. They are blessed to have their worlds overlap to this extent at all, lest they would never have met in the first place. It's been... nice, really, to find that this unintended change in his life didn't impact his love for her in any capacity. If anything, sharing the weight of losing her with someone he's this close to has been the relief Severian never knew he needed.

Perhaps in another life, Severian could have played a bigger role in Reno's life.

His thoughts come to a halt at the sensation of lips against his cheek. He looks up, and comes face to face with Reno grinning at him.

"I finally have you in my arms all for myself, and yet you won't even so much as look at me," Reno teases. "Might I inquire as to what work related matter occupies your mind to the point of ignoring me?"

It's all in jest, Reno's tone tells that much. His hand moves to gently grab a hold of Severian's own one, pulling it close to his lips to pepper light but lingering kisses over each knuckle. Severian chuckles.

"Spoiled, are we?" he says, and moves to hold Reno's hand properly, lacing their fingers together and squeezing firmly. "Worry not, my dear little assistant, for I am not thinking about anything related to work."

"Oh? Now that is unusual," Reno says, "What else could it be that haunt your thoughts, then?"

Their bodies press closer, and in the blink of an eye Reno's lips linger against Severian's, warming them with soft breaths that starkly contrasts the rains' biting chill. Severian feels that same warmth bloom on his cheeks, and he would chastise Reno for acting oblivious if he wasn't so hopelessly fond.

"Pah... You out of anyone ought to know the answer to that already."

"And what if I want to hear it from your lips?"

"Incorrigible brat..."

"Ya know, I think you're about good to go, brother."

Hanekoma looked up from the book he was writing in to glance at the man across from him. A good deal of time had passed since he'd first come under Hanekoma's care, and he could do just about anything he wanted or needed to now. He had taken some time to recover from the incident Shinra had pushed into his lap, but that almost seemed like a faint memory compared to everything that had been going on with Shinra since. The place was going to lose everything to its whistleblower, from the looks of things, and Reno would finally be free to do what he really wanted to with his life.

It would probably mean that he'd never see Reno again after this. He still wasn't sure where he had landed on what he really wanted to do with his life yet, but he was sure Reno was ready to make tracks and give himself some space to breathe. Hanekoma trusted that didn't mean he wasn't coming back, though. Reno liked the food in the café, so he would at least be coming back to the shop for that much at least.

Hanekoma held his arm to keep him from getting up and carefully pulled him back against his chest, cradling him carefully, "Hey, don't hurt yourself, brother. You don't gotta go anywhere to nap. I'll take care'a ya, so just let yourself drop out. If I think you're gonna get a crick or something I'll get ya to bed, but you're good for now. Just rest. I gotcha."

“I mean the most I ever did with those two was get dinner and drinks a few times a week at best. If we had to do a long term job together sometimes depending on the location Rude and I would either share a room or bed so Elena could have her own nothing really weird about that.” Reno mumbled half asleep as he heard the other ramble about how some people didn’t like it when friends were this close. Who was Reno to judge he’d slept in the same bed as another man plenty of times only in sleep pants out of respect for the lady. If it was just him and Rude in a room then maybe they’d both do boxers but thats about it. The offer of a nap had Reno blearily nodding his head in agreement. “Sounds nice.” He mumbled before attempting to stand up his legs like rubber at the moment.

Kaiju Number 8 AU ideas (Cuz' now I have several :-| ) [mostly KafHoshi flavored]

Genderbend AU: Kafka is a wholesome, supportive, big titty tomboy Blue collar girlfriend and Hoshina is a small titty, punk gf who runs a martial arts dojo and is a closeted manic pixie dream girl who need the emotional support to follow her dreams.

2. OOPS! All Kaiju!: Iharu (bright pink with wings), Aoi (navy blue with armor plating), Haruichi (sea foam green and spikes?/acid?/speedy? just double checked its definitely projectile spikes), and Kikoru (lemon yellow and blade creation/ manipulation) all undergo the same kaiju-ification process that Kafka went through and now he has to act as the Peter B. Parker of the group.

"Yes, you shed like a lizard does. It takes a month and it sucks the entire time. For the love of GOD, don't pick at it until it's ready otherwise you end up with rashes."

You could include Reno in there, I'm sure he'd have a badass design, but I didn't because I want to put him through the same mental downward spiral that I think Hoshina would go through when they realize they're into monsterf*cking.

Reno is just sitting there like "What is wrong with me?" and Hoshina is standing next to him with a blender bottle saying

"Bit of advice? Get over it soon because fighting the post nut clarity is not worth it."

To which Reno asks "How would you know?" as Hoshina's eyes pan over to Kafka who's teaching Iharu how to use his new kaiju tongue to eat out a pint sized ice cream container.

"O-oh...." Reno says as realization dawns on him.

"Yeah" Hoshina says as he smacks his lips, "That could be us right now."

"SI-SIR!"

"Hey, don't act like you weren't thinking it too."

3. Model AU: Mina runs a modeling agency and Hoshina is a talent scout. She sends him to find people that a modeling agency wouldn't typically consider for modeling in an attempt to showcase diversity in a positive light. Not knowing where to start, Hoshina heads to a bar and accidentally meets Kafka. The two talk and it comes up in conversation what Hoshina has been set out to do. As a joke, Kafka makes a bet that Hoshina can't make a garbage man be the next top model. (he's the garbage man in question.)

Kafka and Mina know each other. They fell out of contact when Mina made it into college and Kafka had to help support his grandparents through a rough time. Hoshina then hires Aoi (blasian) Haruichi (top surgery scars) and a delinquent brother-sister duo for the teen division (Iharu and Kikoru, who are orphans being raised by their successful gamer live-streamer older brother Narumi. I'm aware this part's a bit of a stretch, so just consider it a non-essential personal flair.) Reno was already a part of the modeling agency but had started to have problems dealing with body image, which Kafka helps correct and sets him on a healthier path. Iharu and Reno later become actors in a popular Power Rangers knock off show and become a canon couple on and off set.

FFVII Rebirth thoughts (Spoilers for everything)

I reemerge having finished Rebirth after four weeks and 92 hours in-game playtime. That’s an incredibly short but also massive amount of playtime for me, Yakuza 0 took me a year with pauses. I’m still reeling after finishing chapter 13, and since all my FF buddies from the old days are long gone, I’ll just vent here. I enjoy reading the reactions and thoughts of other players, so maybe someone else does too?

This post is full of spoilers and Shinra fangirling, but it’s about the whole game:

Shinra:

First, somebody on the team that wrote material for the Turks and Rufus must be some Shinra fandom veteran grown up with 20 years of fanon. Just Elena as a whole, Rude getting her that ice cream, Rufus in the Gold Saucer harassing fighting Cloud for fun, Dark Star not only obeying Rufus but also Tseng. Rufus complaining that Tseng is being overprotective… (faints) So much crack and shippy moments, I was grinning like an idiot.

(Is crack fic even a thing anymore? It feels like they’ve gotten rarer)

I expected maybe three or four scenes with the Turks, maybe less for Rufus. AND THEN SQUARE SHOVED THEM IN WHEREVER THEY COULD WITHOUT DERAILING THE PLOT. Elena was given so much room to breathe. Same for Rufus. Those little moments with Darkstar. I’m over the moon.

Okay, Rufus, so your father got stabbed, and the first thing you did after that was recording some motion-capturing and dialogue for a Turk recruitment hologram-video-thingy in an abandoned facility? It makes zero sense, but it’s my favourite protorelic mission and I’ll happily add it to my headcanon as a sign that Rufus gave Tseng his okay to recruit more Turks.

(The real answer would probably be automatically generated AI shenanigans, but that’s not very exciting.)

Viceroy Saruf. Just … Rufus, you’re such a cheeky idiot and I love you. Is there any faction in this world you’re not manipulating from the background? I can’t shake the feeling that being the man in the shadows suits you more than actually openly running the company.

Tseng and Reeve were great, I would love more little moments like that, where the Shinra folks just interact outside of action scenes and dramatic moments. The talk Tseng had with Reno and Rufus in Remake after the Sector 7 collapse hit the same note for me. I want more Reeve in part 3.

The scene between Tseng and Aerith at the temple made my eyes misty, but I wish it had been longer. Tseng keeping it short and abruptly leaving to "make a report" was perfect, and I know Cloud being so cold and cutting Aerith off fits his behaviour, but something about the timing just felt off.

I was surprised that Heidegger would take a bullet for Rufus. For President Shinra, absolutely, but Rufus? Hmm… This makes great fanfic material. I’ve read a fanfic before that tried to reimagine the Shinra executives (even Palmer) as more realistic people, and I found it to be really interesting, but then I’m a weirdo with plot bunnies in my head that involve a younger President Shinra, his wife, Veld, Vincent and the older Shinra execs.

I’ve never been a fan of Hojo but his R re-imagining is one of the few that doesn’t work at all for me. OG Hojo was far more unsettling. R!Hojo is just your typical mad scientist, I just can’t care about him, which is a shame, because him taunting Aerith in Remake with how he dissected Ifalna hit me hard.

I still haven’t quite grasped why Rufus is so obsessed with the Promised Land. It probably all comes down to wanting to be more successful than his father, right? I’m probably forgetting or mixing up details from Remake, Rebirth or the OG here, but I assumed that Rufus would outright dismiss it as a fairy tale.

Apparently there is a Midgar DLC for Power Wash Simulator. Square Enix, where is Hitman: Tseng and a version of Yakuza where I can play the Turks dealing with dumb crap doing missions in Midgar? Give us Shinra fans something, I'm still waiting for the EC version of Before Crisis. And I don't even like gacha mobile games. >:(

General game thoughts:

The open world is fantastic, I want to live in Gongaga or Kalm. So pretty. People online seem to hate the Gongaga map, but the soundtrack and the jungle theme made it work for me. I found the gliding parts in Cosmo Canyon far harder to navigate.

Shinra Manor is terrible with Vincent being it’s only redeeming part. The actual mansion looked great (the portrait of President Shinra was a nice touch) but the upper levels being inaccessible and turning it into another lab dungeon was boring. Same for the box throwing mini-game.

Dio the archaeologist turned body-builder is great, but Shinra knowing about the keystone and just not bothering to use it when President Shinra was looking for the Promised Land is a weird plot hole. It would have been a lot easier than trying to convince Aerith to come to them. There were some other little details like that, that bothered me but it’s a blur now.

Remake Barett made me into a Barret fan, Rebirth Nanaki into a Nanaki fan. The writers are genius when it comes to rewriting these characters from the OG. I’m not really bothered by Cid not being grumpy and swearing all the time. Him reminiscing about Ifalna was cute. Vincent using his old Turk skills (and having some lingering loyalty to the job?) was cool. Really looking forward to seeing how they’ll handle Lucrecia, the one character in FFVII I'm so conflicted about.

I’m still confused about Aerith’s death scene, especially the cuts where she’s lying in her own blood and then isn’t. I understand that she’s dead in her current reality, but is the scene without blood (and Aerith "waking up" in Cloud’s arms) Cloud’s hallucination or just a different reality? I’m also utterly confused by how many Aeriths we’re dealing with. The Aerith and Cloud we’re playing with and the sleeping Aerith (and Cloud) from the dimension where Zack lives are one and the same? It’s tying my brain into knots, and not in a good way. That’s why I usually can’t stand stories involving elaborate time travel loops or parallel universes.

I first played the OG as a young teen. Cloud’s mind being fractured and hallucinating was a neat bit of storytelling back then that I hadn’t encountered in video games before. Twenty years later, I’ve dealt with loved ones who are ill but refuse help, and known plenty of people who have some form of psychosis or schizophrenia. Whilst I would never seriously compare Cloud’s problems with rl mental illnesses, I found the scenes where he sees Sephiroth and no one else, or is completely out of it hard to stomach. Interacting with somebody who has hallucinations (even "harmless" ones) or paranoid thoughts is unsettling at best, nightmarish at worst. The group trying to passively bear it and keep things together rings very true (especially Tifa) but I’m surprised that even Barett or Yuffie aren’t trying to confront Cloud about his behaviour at least once.

(I tried to format in html, but it somehow looked worse. I'm old. This is how Vincent must feel like every day.)

Dyne, Myrna and Tseng talking to Aerith at the temple had me tearing up, and I lost it at Aerith’s "date" with Cloud in Ch. 14. Hoo boy, I know Aerith stalling off the inevitable just for a little time, was the game having a very direct conversation with the player about what’s going to come, death and how we deal with it. But to me personally, it was more about how one gets caught up in trauma and repeat it over and over in your head, mulling about the point of where things went wrong and what you could have done to prevent it. I know it doesn’t fit, but that’s what my weird brain made out of it. Also Dyne’s and Aerith’s (at the temple) speeches about how they deal (or didn’t) with grief and trauma hit me hard.

Damn you, silly anime action game, you really shouldn’t affect me this deeply, but then a lot of fiction hits me harder than it used to.

Heard about the Kafka 10 idea and how Reno would become Kaiju No.8, you describes him as a fast ice lizard well I remembered Ultraman Max had a kaiju just like that called Lagoras or Ragoras

Honestly this is close to what I wanted to describe Kaiju!Reno as. Only he looks closer to a Plesiosaurus or Brachiosaurus when it comes to facial structure alongside the long ass neck. Think a mix of Lunk from Mixels and Plesiosurf from Megaman Starforce 2.

Happy New Year, everyone~ .. . with a post from last yr :P I didn't even greet you guys properly in the last post. Sorry. Hope everyone had a nice new year. For those in Edmonton, "winter" is finally gonna hit us in a few days! Stay warm :)

White Rabbit Ice Cream is a small ice cream shop tucked in behind the Grant MacEwan area. There's really nothing near there. When Susan & I went last yr (Sept? .. gosh what?! SEPTEMBER? o_O I think it was Sept. ..anyway.. .), there was a banh mi place that was reno-ing next door. Not sure if that's open now or not.

In any case, White Rabbit ice cream. They're basically a local ice cream shop - using local ingredients to create ice cream flavours that suit local taste. TBH, I'm not sure what that even means lol I understand using local ingredients.. . local taste? I don't know. I am skeptical.

On the left is Susan's - milk tea & banana dream pie. (yes, dream, not cream).

On the right = my milk tea & cookie monster (Oreos + home-made cookie dough bites)

They offered samples before you commit to you flavour(s). I tried the milk tea & really liked it. It reminded me of. .. instant milk tea powder haha tea flavour wasn't that strong but it was also not very sweet. A very mild choice.

The cookie monster was 9.1/10! I love Oreos & when I doubt, I choose cookies n cream anything. I liked the little cookie dough pieces in it. Chewy & flavour was quite rich. Would get again!

A Remembrance of my Father, posted by Eve Hill “The search for the meaning of life is the meaning of life.” This was who my father was. One of the questions I am most often asked is, “With Dr. Needleman as your dad, what were conversations like at the dinner table?” Questions were encouraged. Especially the unanswerable ones. When I was about six or seven years old, we had a houseguest staying with us, a Tibetan monk & scholar named Lobsang Lhalungpaa. My father said I could ask him a question, any question. I was very shy. I had a question but I couldn’t bring myself to say it out loud. So I wrote it down on a piece of paper – actually I wrote it down many, many times, all over the piece of paper, with lots of question marks and exclamation points, and then folded the paper up to make it small. “What happens when you die?” Lobsang told me to imagine a football. And then he told me to imagine there was a hole in the football, and all the air went out of it. He said he thought it was maybe something like that. Maybe it is. Maybe it‘s like what happens in that scene from one of my father’s books, “An Unknown World.” His younger self, Jerry, is experiencing the untimely death of his closest boyhood friend, Elias. The one he met often at the low stone wall, to discuss their love of science, ideas, and the universe. But Elias dies at fourteen. In the book, when Elias dies, Jerry cries out, “I’ll learn for both of us!” My father certainly seems to have taken this “I’ll learn for both of us” to heart. He was completely dedicated throughout his life - to his scholarly work and to The Work. Let’s face it - he worked. A lot. I mean, it seemed like he was either out teaching at San Francisco State, out at a Gurdjieff meeting, working in his office and not to be disturbed, or napping in his office & not to be disturbed. We did watch football games together. We played catch. We looked through his childhood sports autograph collection, several worn little books, tied together with rubber bands. In the pages, so many signatures, and stories behind the signatures. Him waiting outside the ballpark or the train station for Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, or Dizzy Dean. He bought us ice cream at Swensen’s and we rode the cable car. We made it to Playland a bunch of times before it got torn down, and when my Grandma Ida came to town from Florida, they took me along with them to Reno and let me pull a few slots when no one was looking. He made quarters appear out of our ears. Balls disappeared between his fingers, and he always knew every card we picked. My father was funny. My father was serious. My father was comfortable as the center of attention. And generous. I have come to realize more and more – ever since Gail died, just how generous he was with all of you. Because of how you all responded when that happened. You counseled him with patience. You kept calling, listening, visiting. Bringing food, sitting quietly with him, and reading to him. And then in June, when he had a fall and came home on hospice, you still kept calling, listening, & visiting. You still kept bringing food, sitting quietly, and reading to him. It meant a lot to me to see how much he meant to you. With all that he had, he nurtured the seeker in himself and in others. And I think he learned enough for all of us. Thank you.

Final Fantasy Record Keeper Free Relic Draws

In the Final Fantasy Record Keeper (FFRK) mobile game, we sometimes get free draws. This post is a list of the results of some of these free pulls.

One of these draws gave me a 7-star, fist-type weapon.

It’s been a really long while though so I can’t quite remember the reason for this particular free pull. I’d say the only reason why I even bothered to take note of this was because I actually ended up getting a Synchro Arcane Soul Break (SASB).

This is currently one of the best kinds of Soul Breaks in FFRK so of course, it’s pretty hard to get, especially since the rates here are utter trash and there’s no pity system like in the Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia (DFFOO) mobile game.

The Sync that I got belongs to Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII (#ad). This deals physical earth elemental damage.

This pull also gave me a new 5-star Legend Materia Relic (LMR) for a Final Fantasy XII char and a new Overstrike Soul Break (OSB) for a Final Fantasy VII char.

Pretty sure that OSB belongs to Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII, judging from the fact that the weapon in question is a greatsword and it’s called Ragnarok (VII). It also looks kinda, sorta similar to the Buster Sword.

Black Friday Free Relic Draw Banner

Just like with the aforementioned free relic draw, the only reason why I bothered to take note of this one was because I got a new Sync.

At least I know this came from the Black Friday event.

The Sync I got belongs to Celes Chere from Final Fantasy VI. This deals physical ice elemental damage.

Other than Celes’s Sync, this draw didn’t give me anything else that could be of use to me.

Final Fantasy Record Keeper 6th Anniversary Special Banner Free Relic Draws Results

I think these free relic draws are from the Final Fantasy Record Keeper 6th Anniversary special banner though I’m not entirely sure.

Anyway, I was pretty hyped when Dr. Mog showed up on this particular draw.

I was hoping to get a Synchro Arcane Soul Break (SASB), preferably one that I don’t have yet (I don’t have a lot yet so this isn’t that much of a tall order), but instead I got Agrias Oaks’s (from Final Fantasy Tactics) Limit Break Overstrike (LBO).

LBOs aren’t that good, especially if it’s the only relic you have for a char. Syncs are way better.

As you can guess, I don’t have a single decent relic for Agrias so this thing is just gonna be rotting in my inventory for now.

As if this draw wasn’t meh enough as it was, the only other gold relic I got was nothing more than a dupe of a char’s Ultra Soul Break (USB). The relic says it’s from Final Fantasy VII, and I’m pretty sure this Ultra belongs to Reno.

Dr. Mog also showed up for another one of my free relic draws. I tried not to be too hopeful since I might just end up getting another LBO again, but that was easier said than done. When I saw the gun-type weapon, I was already prepared to be disappointed.

Because I thought for sure that I was gonna be getting the Limit Break Overstrike of Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy VII and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. Again.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the case at all. The game has finally decided to give me a Synchro Arcane Soul Break. Yeah, just got Vincent’s Sync, and it’s new. Color me surprised. Really super pleased about this.

Also, come to think of it, do I even have Vincent’s Limit Break Overstrike on my Final Fantasy Record Keeper English game account?

I know for sure that I have it on my Japanese FFRK account and, AFAIK, I must have gotten it like twice already or something, so I’m really sick of seeing it there. But now I can’t remember for sure if I have this on my English account or not.

I do know that I have a lot more of Vincent’s relics on this account so acquiring his Sync here just makes him more usable, and I wouldn’t say no to getting his Limit Break Overstrike as well.

On the other hand, I think I only have his LBO on my Japanese account, which was why he isn’t part of any of my teams there.
