THE HOT MEDIEVAL & FANTASY MEN MELEE
QUALIFYING ROUND: 14th Tilt
William Thatcher, A Knight’s Tale (2001) VS. King Arthur Pendragon, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Propaganda
William Thatcher, A Knight’s Tale (2001) Portrayed by: Heath Ledger
“13-year-old me had such a HUGE crush on Will Thatcher / Ulrich von Liechtenstein, and you know what? 13-year-old me was RIGHT (and had much healthier taste in men). He's a dreamer, he's sweet (except maybe when you're dismissive about jousting...), he gives to others despite having little himself, he has the most charming, contagious smile. And to play us out... he's blonde! He's pissed! He'll see you in the lists! Lichtenstein! Lichtenstein!”
King Arthur Pendragon, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) Portrayed by: Charlie Hunnam
“He's buff, he's sexy; he respects women, children, and sex workers, and he hates cops; he's clever, he's driven, he's a little campy, he is OH SO SNARKY, and he looks pretty damn good wielding that sword of his... And he spends the majority of the movie looking confused and getting the shit beat out of him while still being the most respected person in the room”
Additional Propaganda Under the Cut
Additional Propaganda
For William Thatcher:
“HE'S SO CUTE AND BRAVE AND STUPID AND DETERMINED AND FUNNY AND POETIC AND HE HAS BIG BEAUTIFUL BROWN EYES AND FRECKLES AND HE'S BISEXUAL-CODED HE'S MY BOY I LOVE HIM SO MUCH”
“The only man that could have pulled off a David Bowie dance scene within a medieval ballroom.”
For King Arthur:

Speaking of wonderful, campy, scenery-chewing Dracula portrayals...
I just... I fucking love Richard Roxburgh in this role. Holy crap, he was so ridiculously entertaining. He understood the assignment - growl, hiss, roar, and devour every piece of scenery he could get his hands on. Look, there’s an unspoken rule that if you’re going to go over-the-top, you’d better be able to run to the moon and back. Richard did that with cartwheels galore.
The costume/hair design was pretty cool, too. That sort-of Adam Ant goth-punk-pirate look was quite sexy.
Van Helsing was basically a giant love-letter to the classic Universal Monster movies, and for all it’s flaws (heroes are dull as rocks, sorry), I love it so much.
Ok, so how’s the writing for this Drac? Um... well... it’s another case of “cool idea, but the execution could’ve been better”, at least with his rivalry with Van Helsing. BUT the whole “ffs, can I just let my kids stay alive for FIVE MINUTES?!” plot was pretty cool and I love how they incorporated Frankenstein into that plot.
But let’s be real... I don’t watch this film for the plot... I watch it for Drac and his brides.
(also Richard has been married to Silvia Colloca - Verona, on the left - since 2004 so I think that’s really cute)
Stephen Sommers films - the cause of many bisexual awakenings in the early 2000s.

The Most In-depth Analysis of Luca Marinelli’s Characters You’ll Ever Need
You’d think I was done with classifications, but I’m not! There’s so much more I can say about Luca Marinelli’s oeuvre and his magnificent roster of characters. And yes, I’ve made this post before where I highlighted specific tropes that show up in a lot of his movies, but that was surface-level shit. This is an actual exploration of what makes a Luca Marinelli character besides being a kinky little whore. And don’t worry, it’s still in that user-friendly question-answer format because I love you.
Here’s the thing: Luca is a chameleon but he also has a type, and this type is:
✨ a (likely) queer repressed addict with daddy issues ✨
That’s the skeleton. Let’s see how many of his major roles possess that skeleton at all and what flavors they add to the picture.
Disclaimer: I excluded characters with little screen time and Joseph from Mary of Nazareth because he doesn’t deserve rights. Also, instead of going in the boring chronological order, I’m gonna start with the least typical character for Luca and end with the crème de la crème. The results may not surprise you.
Nicky (The Old Guard)
Is he queer? Undeniably.
Is he repressed? No.
Does he have an addiction? No.
Does he have daddy issues? I know we’re all deeply affected by our shitty father figures but I would genuinely question Nicky’s sanity if he were still on that shit at the ripe age of 951. A little tip for daddy-hating immortals out there: just do what Angel did and kill your shitty dad. Problem solved.
Is he violent? Despite doling out tons of violence, he doesn’t have a violent nature and seems uninterested in hating his enemy or delivering retribution.
Does he need a good night sleep? I’m sure nothing helps one sleep better than a Joe-shaped big spoon.
Does he need a good cry? Doesn’t seem like it.
Flavors: A perfect immortal warrior bean in a healthy relationship.
Conclusion: Ironically but unsurprisingly, Nicky is the least Luca-like character.
Guido (Tutti i santi giorni)
Is he queer? I don’t believe so but who knows? If someone told me he’s demisexual, I’d believe it.
Is he repressed? The movie may disagree, but I say yes, obviously.
Does he have an addiction? Not unless you count his romantic relationship.
Does he have daddy issues? His family is so supportive and wholesome it’s almost parodic.
Is he violent? He’s the opposite of a toxic macho dude, but then he has a violent outburst out of nowhere because the movie is bad.
Does he need a good night sleep? He doesn’t like sleeping at night.
Does he need a good cry? Naturally.
Flavors: An adorkable awkward nerd with flowery speech.
Conclusion: I can forgive straightness and wholesomeness but I can’t forgive lack of complexity.
Martin (Martin Eden)
Is he queer? I don’t believe so.
Is he repressed? Yes.
Does he have an addiction? No.
Does he have daddy issues? Not to my knowledge.
Is he violent? When he deems it necessary to be.
Does he need a good night sleep? Sure.
Does he need a good cry? Cry your little heart out, Martin!
Flavors: An arrogant, pretentious, politically confused writer.
Conclusion: A little too straight for your typical Luca, but he makes up for it with being complex and complicated.
Loris (Il mondo fino in fondo)
Is he queer? I don’t believe so.
Is he repressed? So fucking repressed!
Does he have an addiction? Nothing beyond his savior complex.
Does he have daddy issues? He has a shitty dad he’s spent his whole life trying to please, and also his mommy left, so like yeah, obviously.
Is he violent? He has his straight dude moments.
Does he need a good night sleep? Definitely.
Does he need a good cry? Oh yeah, let him cry, it’s good for him.
Flavors: A casually homophobic mother hen.
Conclusion: Ruined by heterosexual agenda.
Lui (Ricordi?)
Is he queer? I don’t believe so.
Is he repressed? Very.
Does he have an addiction? No.
Does he have daddy issues? A big sack of them.
Is he violent? No.
Does he need a good night sleep? Oh yes. To sleep, perchance to dream about anything other than his traumatic memories.
Does he need a good cry? So much.
Flavors: Up-his-butt and pensive.
Conclusion: Leave it to Luca to take a guy who would be an absolute nightmare in real life and turn him into someone I actually want to watch for two hours and see happy by the end.
Gabriele (Waves)
Is he queer? There’s evidence he might be gay.
Is he repressed? I’d bet on it.
Does he have an addiction? Doesn’t seem like it.
Does he have daddy issues? Nobody knows.
Is he violent? No.
Does he need a good night sleep? He probably will with how the movie ended.
Does he need a good cry? At least one.
Flavors: A sweet introverted guy who loves boats.
Conclusion: While not particularly complex, Gabriele has layers and nuances. Also give him a big muscular daddy.
Fabrizio (Fabrizio de André - Principe libero)
Is he queer? I don’t believe so.
Is he repressed? He was before music became his only career.
Does he have an addiction? Alcohol, cigarettes, sex, cheating - take your pick.
Does he have daddy issues? Not as bad as some of the other guys here but he’s heard his fair share of “I’m not mad, I’m disappointed” speeches.
Is he violent? He’s soft.
Does he need a good night sleep? He’s an artist, what do you think?
Does he need a good cry? He’s an artist, what do you think?
Flavors: Fabrizio de André is the flavor.
Conclusion: Even though it’s a biopic, there are still many Luca-isms there. He’s just that kind of actor.
Milton (Una questione privata)
Is he queer? It could be argued that he is bisexual.
Is he repressed? Do you even need to ask?
Does he have an addiction? About half of the breaths he takes are filled with cigarette smoke.
Does he have daddy issues? He seems to have a good and loving relationship with both his parents.
Is he violent? Not by nature.
Does he need a good night sleep? Yep.
Does he need a good cry? He certainly does.
Flavors: A repressed bisexual feeling powerless in a horrible world.
Conclusion: This is proof that Luca can carry a whole entire movie on his sexy shoulders, alone. Also Milton needs a safe and loving triad.
Mattia (La solitudine dei numeri primi)
Is he queer? I personally read him as asexual. Though assigning asexuality to characters who are traumatized is a dangerous path so don’t quote me on this, okay?
Is he repressed? Just the most repressed.
Does he have an addiction? It’s debatable whether self-harm and eating disorders can be considered addictions, but they’re part of his character, and I thought you should know.
Does he have daddy issues? His parents played their part in messing him up which then led to the big thing that really messed him up, though other than that his dad is barely a presence.
Is he violent? Not at all.
Does he need a good night sleep? At least 17 hours.
Does he need a good cry? Oh, so much. He needs all the cry.
Flavors: A quiet genius with lots of guilt.
Conclusion: Can you believe this was his first film role? Our boy is talented af!
Fabio (Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot)
Is he queer? Undeniably.
Is he repressed? You could argue that he is repressed by being limited in his place in social hierarchy.
Does he have an addiction? Amazingly enough, no. He has fixations, though.
Does he have daddy issues? Thinking his father was a loser and not wanting to end up like him is textbook stuff.
Is he violent? Very.
Does he need a good night sleep? Yes please.
Does he need a good cry? He needs to purge his soul from all the bottled up stuff.
Flavors: A campy psycho.
Conclusion: Luca’s most iconic character, so of course he scored high on the list.
Paolo (Il padre d’Italia)
Is he queer? Undeniably.
Is he repressed? I can’t even start listing all the ways in which he’s repressed.
Does he have an addiction? He smokes a lot.
Does he have daddy issues? His issues are more of a mommy variety.
Is he violent? Not in the slightest.
Does he need a good night sleep? He’s the poster boy for needing a good night sleep.
Does he need a good cry? A good cry, a good weep, a good sob, a good bawl, *googles more synonyms* a good wail, a good squall...
Flavors: A self-loathing gay orphan in need of some life goodness.
Conclusion: What can I say about Paolo that all of you aren’t already thinking? Decent film, great character, excellent portrayal.
Mickey (Die Pfeiler der Macht)
Is he queer? Undeniably.
Is he repressed? It’s Victorian England, you guys.
Does he have an addiction? He smokes casually but other than that... eh. And don’t tell me he has sex addiction. He uses his body strategically.
Does he have daddy issues? If what he has isn’t daddy issues, I don’t know what is.
Is he violent? He’s got tons of bottled up aggression.
Does he need a good night sleep? It would be great if he could use the day’s darkest hours for sleeping.
Does he need a good cry? Undeniably.
Flavors: A conniving slut extraordinaire.
Conclusion: A major player in the book (says me who managed like 50 pages), Mickey Miranda was turned into such a nothing character in the miniseries that they needed a truly extraordinary actor to make him memorable. And guess what, Luca delivered.
Cesare (Non essere cattivo)
Is he queer? Not explicitly, but come on.
Is he repressed? Lethally.
Does he have an addiction? He’s an addiction textbook.
Does he have daddy issues? *Jake Peralta voice* Yeah, the guy without a daddy is the one with daddy issues. Explain that logic.
Is he violent? Oh yeah, he’s a rabid little trash goblin.
Does he need a good night sleep? So much.
Does he need a good cry? He’s had his fair share of good cries, but he could always use more.
Flavors: A aimless junkie.
Conclusion: The quintessential Luca. Beautiful.
Primo (Trust)
Is he queer? Listen, just because we don’t see him fuck a dude on screen it doesn’t mean he isn’t a motherfluffing queer icon. It’s not subtext; it’s TEXT.
Is he repressed? Where do I even fucking start?
Does he have an addiction? Oh yeah. And a coke nail to prove it.
Does he have daddy issues? I would need a whole separate post to unpack his daddy issues.
Is he violent? So very violent.
Does he need a good night sleep? Yes, please. On an actual bed in an actual bedroom.
Does he need a good cry? You can just tell.
Flavors: A ruthless criminal with a strong mafia boss potential.
Conclusion: The pièce de résistance of the Luca Marinelli filmography. Not only does he tick every box, he gets bonus points for the excellent wardrobe choices that emphasize Luca’s best features. Primo Nizzuto is everything great you want from Luca, except singing. (Though in my headcanon that whole white car in a snowstorm monologue was a musical number.)

if it’s not too late, 12 for episodes and ships, and 17!
its never too late! thankyou for the ask 🥰 oo damn this is gonna be a hefty one, just to prepare you this is gonna be long 😅😅😅
spoiler alert for my friends who are finishing up season 2 rn, be careful if you look at my top five episodes, pay attention the the episode numbers, i will put [ ] in bold at the beginning and end of spoilers!
12. Top 5 ships
5. faith x myself because have you seen faith? shes such a babe! spare consensual kiss maam?
4. willow x oz, i dont know if this is an unpopular or not but i feel like if the 90s had been more accepting of term then willow wouldve been bisexual, but like even now tv shows will rarely let characters say that word :( but anyway i love them! theyre both quirky and kinda awkward but its such a sweet relationship and you really see how they go from awkward crushes to an actual deep relationship, oz is one of my favourite characters too what a dude!
3. giles x jenny, mlmxwlw solidarity in this bisexual couple! there is no an ounce of straight between them and i love it, i love their dynamic, i love that giles *respects women* (im staring daggers at xander rn), also the original girlboss x malewife couple askdjaksjhd
2. drusilla x spike, these two!!!!!! once again a bisexual couple with zero straight between them, the vibes are off the charts. sexy vampires, goth x punk love, i just love them man, and their relationship is so interesting to delve into. like theyre vampires, theyre soulless and yet they have a capacity for love, they care deeply for eachother, theyre so tender towards eachother in season 2 in the way they take turns to care for one another, also drusilla picking spike up with one hand made me gay and thats on that
1. willow x tara!!!!! lesbians man lesbians! they have a beautiful relationship, until a certain point wink wink, they feel like a perfect match, willows become more outgoing due to buffy and xander snd having a proper group of friends, so its cool to see her as the more outgoing independant one in the relationship, and tara is such a honey 🥺 the biggest sweetheart in the world what a babe!!!! also like how groundbreaking was their relationship? as a queer couple, they had p much the dame amount of screentime as a aueer relationship today! and willow says the word lesbian so many times and is always making gay jokes which is something shows today are too scared to do, its honestly refreshing which is weird for a show in the 90/00s
12. Top 5 episodes
this is so hard because its such a damn good show so i had to rlly be picky about this but here we go
5. 6x22 ‘grave’- i watched buffy for the first time last year at work coz i worked with one other person just packing shit, and THIS was the episode that made us cry infront of eachother. the scene with willow and xander at the end is one of my all time favourite scenes and like legit we were watching and we starting going like ha.. this is so sad Q_Q and we looked at eachother and we were both crying akdjdjsjdhs its SO GOOD, like this is a friendship ive been so invested in and [seeing xander be able to pull her back from that dark place was so heart wrenching and amazing god its so good]
4. 3x12 ‘helpless’ - im finishing up s2 in my rewatch rn so i havent rewatched this one to double check but i remember loving it man. buffys father daughter relationship with giles is my favourite of the whole show they make my heart ache, so i love that this is an episode that really shows you how dedicated giles is to her, [its the breaking point where he finally disregards the fact that hes a watcher and acts as her father once and for all, its a turning point for their relationship where he is finally embracing the fact that shes like a daughter to him and i just love to see it Q_Q get you a dad who will leave his lifes calling for you]
3. 4x22 ‘restless’ - season 4 is interesting coz it has really good episodes and them some gd awful ones 😂😂 but this one just blew me away, i love a good character study episode and this is THE SHIT! its so weird and creepy but in the most perfect way, its not on the nose its so subtle, it feels like an uncanny valley version of buffy almost, i like that they finished the season first and then took this episode to do something out of the box and different i feel like it lets them fully explore this idea without the pressure of needing plot included. [also the cheese man is iconic. dont however like xander being all nasty with willow and tara but whats new there man]
2. 1x12 ‘The Prophecy Girl’ - for my first watch of buffy i wasnt that into the first season, like i enjoyed it but i didnt think it was anything super special? but this episode changed EVERYTHING for me. up until now buffy had been fun, witty, charming, but not anything new atleast for me, maybe in the 90s it was but right now its your average teen supernatural show. but this episode!!!! the emotion! buffy facing her death, her speech about how shes just 16 and shes scared and she doesnt want to die, that is what i wanna see!! its heartbreaking and it made me cry, and then it gives us the wonderful moment of giles trying to take her place and buffy realising that she has to be the one to do it, man its so good! basically anything with buffy and giles being a duo is gonna make it an automatic yes from me and this is indeed the case for this episode, i just love that the show remembers that shes a child! shes not brave all the time, shes not strong all the time, shes just doing her best and sometimes its overwhelming, 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 i bow to this episode
1. 2x17 ‘passion’ - i know i just sang praises about prophecy girl but THIS EPISODE IS THE SHIT, the best episode full stop. i wont accept any argument. angel is probably my favourite big bad, its so funny to see plain bread, mopey brooding angel become this charismatic, funny, poetic, blood thirsty angelus, hes everything i want in a villain and in this episode he delivers! rip jenny tho love her. i think the tension built around angel is so good, because of his drawings and notes left around, every scene youre worrying like is he here now? are they safe or what? its so tense! and also it is me and im a slag for buffy x giles father daughter moments and this episode fucking delivers! giles discovering jennys dead body is probably one of the best scenes on the show, the dramatic irony is heAVY, we know jenny is dead, we know that these flowers arent from her, but giles is so so happy, and i want to see him happy but you just know somehing horrific is about to happen and damn does it. its a masterpiece! i love jenny and giles so much it is so sad, but also the fact that it gave us that scene makes me almmmoost ok with it? i also love the moment where giles breaks down in buffys arms, hes been there for her and now shes returning the favour and hes accepting it i just 😭😭😭 also on a different note, angels narration of this episode is amazing! it gives us great insight to who he is as “evil angel” and like even though hes awful i was also kind of rooting for him coz hes just such a great villain
sorry this is so long lmao, last question!
17. Which characer do you wish had less of a focus on them in the show?
i dont wanna get yelled at butttttt i dont like the amount of focus on dawn. i think it makes sense for the her first season considering the story arc but that season really does double down its focus onto dawn and buffy and it barely leaves room for anyone else to have a storyline, it keeps the episodes super depressing too its like a constant level of just sadness the whole time because we’re so stuck in THEIR arc, theres no room to balance it out and have a breather, some people might like that its more serious but i really really didnt like, i love episodes like prophecy girl where it is campy and brings the more emotional notes in when the time comes, but dawns whole arc is just constantly depressing the whole time i just hate it, and also just shes not a character i felt i could connect to because of how suddenly shes introduced, so its weird to have her SO focused on in the first half of that season coz we dont know her yet so i feel like the emotional moments dont land the way that they should? basically they shouldve eased us into dawn or introduced her differently and maybe i would like her enough to want the focus on her but i really just dont
adksjakjshd apologies for the essay this is, thanks for the ask!
#btvs#buffy the vampire slayer#why did i write a paragraph for everything im so sorry#i wish i knew how to add a read more link but i dont on mobile#my post#dawn fans please dont murder me#i dont hate her i just dont like her yanno#i am scared people are gonna hate me for not liking her but we all have our tastes

similarities between Dean Winchester and Michael Emerson
because I can't stop thinking about the fact that dean's favorite movie is a campy vampire movie famous for it's significance in the history of queer cinema
both have a younger brother who they care a lot about (sam and, well, sam!)
raised by a single parent (lucy and john)
also featuring a gruff, alcoholic father figure (grandpa and bobby)
dean has the impala, michael has his bike (that they both fixed up themselves!)
bad tempers + bad at talking about feelings
same taste in music
both wear leather jackets
kind of stupid but we love them anyway
bisexual
both in love with a sexy man in a long coat who says their names a lot but is a different species and also has a biblical name. who also dies in the end.
#probably no one cares but I just!!! cannot stop thinking about this!!!!!!#dean#dean winchester#supernatural#jensen ackles#the lost boys#lost boys#the lost boys 1987#michael Emerson#jason patrick#david#david lostboys#kiefer sutherland

First Kill isn't the first supernatural show with wlw protagonist, although it's first in a vampire genre, which is pretty cool. We need more of those.
But I'd recommend watching:
- Motheland: Fort Salem about witches with a lesbian protagonist. It's cheesy, campy, over the top, jumps the shark more than once, but it's a lot of fun.
- Lost Girl is another show with an lgbt protagonist. Bo is bisexual and a succubus who needs other people's energy in order to survive. It's campy, funny, with great characters, lots of sexy scenes, doesn't take itself too serious, musoc is awesome and the love triangle is pretty cool (although we all know team doccubus is a winner). It's in my top 5 favorite tv shows.
There's also Fear Street with a lesbian protagonist. Also, about witches and surprisingly, I found it to be a lot of fun, although I wasn't expecting much. But it's really well done, has good amount of drama, horror and some gore.
Bombarding my timeline with as much ‘First Kill’ as possible until Netflix updates with the information on whether they’re renewing for Season 2 or not.
I want this story to continue. We’ve never had a canon WLW main love story in the supernatural genre before.
And there’s too much left open-ended and on a cliffhanger. So if you’re not into it, too bad. You’ll have to mute or block me because I’m not talking about anything else until then. If you are into it, watch it.

Girl Reporter by Tansy Rayner Roberts Great for: Everyone 16+, but especially bisexual girls Is there an LGBT+ couple? Yes- multiple! 10/10
Obviously, you’re not used to seeing my ugly mug in my reviews, but I am too excited about unintentionally cosplaying my new favourite hero. Friday Valentina is amazing- she’s funny, confident, intelligent, proud of herself and her sexuality and so much fun to read. A huge well done and thank you to Tansy Rayner Roberts for creating Friday- she’s the greatest bisexual character that I have ever read.
I only wish this book had been around when I was younger- after years of homophobic bullying before I even questioned my sexuality, I was so scared of just thinking that I could be bi. It took years to accept and that was because I could see a bisexual character (Serena Campbell in Holby City) go through all the same thought process as me- not understanding the attraction to women as sexual, denying it and being scared of being thought of as gay. Seeing that was what helped me more than anything, but if I had met Friday when I was 16, I’d be on girlfriend number 10 by now (in my dreams).
But what makes Friday so different to most queer protagonists is her confidence. In LGBT YA lit, it’s almost always a girl who’s really awkward, especially when she’s with her crush, and is forever being embarrassed by their forwardness. But not Friday. Firstly, she calls herself a ‘proud bisexual ’(!!!) early in the book, and neither her nor anyone else’s sexuality is questioned or treated as a narrative problem, which is basically unheard of. Secondly, Friday is pretty unshakeable- she’s super-cool when she’s getting with her long time crush, brags about having such a hot girlfriend in front of her mum and the notoriously scary ‘The Dark’, which is the amazing confidence that we need to see more of.
Friday is so happy in her sexuality that she shouts it from the rooftops and genuinely doesn’t care what other people say. Most LGBTQ+ books celebrate coming out, which is great, but I’ve never seen the pride that Friday has in her bisexuality in any other book. Saying that you should be confident and proud of your sexual orientation is an amazing message to send that is genuinely inspiring. And I won’t spoil anything, but Roberts shows this in 2 other queer relationships that are also incredible.
And an absolute first for me that was so welcome was a sex scene- but not like the normal ones. On the rare occasion that there is a sex scene in a book about queer women, it’s always tender, loving and emotional, which is great, but sex isn’t always like that. This sex scene is cheeky and hot- its the most genuine sex scene of a new couple that I’ve seen, and while it’s wierd to be saying that the sex scene is one of the best and original things about this fantastic book, I really do tip my hat to Roberts for it. And finally, it’s also amazing for being the second book (that I’ve read) in 2017 that’s shown a queer, disabled female superhero- I’m hoping that this is a trend that Marvel and DC will pick up.
Moving on from my huge crush on Friday, the rest of the book is great too. Every character is super lovable- Solar is really cute and inspiring, The Dark’s grumpiness at Friday’s constant quips is hilarious and his beautiful and heartbreaking back story was an amazing and original take on the superhero story, Griff’s love of Friday and Tina that he (adorably) fails to hide and his dedication to caring for others is lovely, and superstar reporter Tina, who raised her daughter to believe that you help other women on the ladder to success, that you never call a woman a bitch and whose integrity and love for her friends stop her (and Friday) from breaking the biggest superhero story, is an amazing example for all women and girls.
Girl Reporter is an outstanding example of a character-focused superhero story, that makes you fall in love with every character for their quirks, including the supervillain of the book. It ticks every box for me: A great protagonist✔ A fantastic, well-developed and individual team of superheroes ✔ A mature female character, who is a flawed single mother, is celebrated for her work ✔ A villain who is as funny as she is determined for victory ✔ AMAZING queer representation ✔ Brilliant disabled representation ✔ A bisexual protagonist ✔ A queer couple getting together and it not being a massive, life-changing moment ✔ Mature queer representation ✔ And so on- its a really good book.
Girl Reporter is a fantastic, campy, fun superhero story that is engaging and original. Tansy Rayner Roberts’ strength, though, is in her character writing: I really do commend her for producing such amazing queer characters who totally break out of the books for queer characters in young adult literature, and striking the perfect balance between a fun and sexy queer couple and an emotional and sincere queer couple. And on top of that, she’s written one of the best bisexual characters that I’ve ever seen. Oh, and she wrote that superhot sex scene.
All I can say is that I really hope that we can see more of Friday and her adventures!

Gay Appropriation
There are several side-by-side comparison videos on YouTube of Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round” music video with the remake that Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon did for the Tonight Show.
People seem to delight in the exactitude that Rudd and Fallon achieved and I admit when I first saw it I chuckled. It’s absurd and appealing to those who remember the song from our youths. I think it clear Rudd and Fallon sincerely like the song and are having a great time recreating it but upon reflection the whole spoof starts to rub me the wrong way.
Yes, the comedians took skill and time to do it but I really wonder why? Is it to say, “hey look at how campy this video is and how funny we look dressed up like these guys from the 80s”? Because if that’s the case this is lazy humor. After all, the video was ALWAYS campy. There is no doubt in my mind that Dead or Alive were fully aware of the absurdity of the video they were shooting from day one. I mean, Pete Burns is wearing an eyepatch and winking at the camera basically in drag.
Is there an art form more steeped in self-awareness and camp than drag? I find it hard to think of one. Drag performers have always embraced the concept that a man dressed as a woman is and must be “more” woman than a female. Thus the crazy makeup, outlandish outfits and the celebration of female icons. Drag is always over the top.
The uninitiated should be clear not to confuse this with the transgendered and those who seek real “realness” and normalcy as a woman. That motivation is different. Drag is a performance, even if there is catharsis for the performer to “become” a woman.
From the outside it seems Pete Burns had a turbulent life when it came to body image. In "You Spin Me Round” we see a young pre-surgery version of him in fabulous feminine kimonos, full makeup, and extreme hair that arguably was fashionable to both men and women at the time. He is having the same fun that Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon would have in their recreation, except Dead or Alive is creating something original and Burns is singing from his heart. For as flippant as the lyrics are this is a love song from a gay or bisexual man to his object of desire. This song is sexy.
Nothing is changed in the Rudd and Fallon version other than the obvious shortcuts like not casting the full band and the unshiny outfits. It’s extra lazy too because it’s not like the original has high production value. Dead or Alive were working with whatever studio budget their record label gave them and it probably wasn’t much. Kudos to Rudd and Fallon for fully covering the song and singing it themselves, but again we hear just how sub quality their version is. The original sounds much better from the drum machine tone to the synth sounds to Burns’s full throated voice.
In general I like Fallon’s music spoofs. His Neil Young singing “I Whip My Hair Around” is perfect because it is true juxtaposition. And I’m no hater of Paul Rudd. He’s cute and one of those actors who doesn’t need a starring role to shine. He can show up in a random scene and be memorable.
But what Rudd and Fallon have committed here is straight appropriation of gay culture. I don’t consider it homophobic nor offensive, but there is zero reason to watch it when the original provides better music and humor.
By the way, “You Spin Me Round” is a seminal karaoke song. If it’s available you should do it. You’ll have the whole joint dancing and you don’t need much of a vocal range. Go ahead and feel the pure joy of a man flaming out for the one he loves.

Braving the RS 500 Greatest Albums of All Time: #35, David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
Start date: April 19th, 2018 / Day 334)
From Rolling Stone:
This album documents one of the most elaborate self-mythologizing schemes in rock, as David Bowie created the glittery, messianic alter ego Ziggy Stardust ("well-hung and snow-white tan"). The glam rock Bowie made with guitarist Mick Ronson on tracks like "Hang on to Yourself" and "Suffragette City" is an irresistible blend of sexy, campy pop and blues power. The anthem "Ziggy Stardust" is one of rock's earliest, and best, power ballads. "I consider myself responsible for a whole new school of pretensions," Bowie said at the time. "They know who they are. Don't you, Elton? Just kidding. No, I'm not."
To contextualize a little bit, I’m a Gemini. I live for everything theatrical, whether it be in music, film, or my own personal life. It’s reflected in my taste a lot and Ziggy Stardust isn’t an exception.
An album about a bisexual alien rock superstar is already weirdly catered to me, but aside from that, Bowie’s affinity for theatrics really lead to an unparalleled immersion in the characters and roles he took on in each of his albums, and Ziggy Stardust is the apex of that. Even though the storyline of “a dying planet is revived by a rockstar messiah who eventually dies at the hands of his own fame” isn’t solidly established in the text of the album itself, Bowie was invested enough in his vision that this is still its widely accepted interpretation.
The music is incredible, but it functions more, to me, of a symbol of the amount of effort and love that Bowie put into his projects. It’s something that exists far beyond itself. People talk about albums being the sum of their parts or more than that, but it’s the sum of something much better, somehow condensed into 38 minutes.
Year: 1972 Standout Track(s): Five Years, Soul Love, Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City, Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide Rating: 5/5 - Nobody will ever make anything like this ever again
