i feel like sometimes when mitsuki and aya are listening to music together alone a certain kind of love song comes on and immediately wipes away their singing and laughter to reveal a tension that was always there under it. i don't mean to say they stop having fun! and also to give examples it's like... if fell in love with a girl came on that song is so raucous and full of energy i feel like they'd prob be too busy screaming the lyrics to mutually and presently acknowledge the lyrics they're sharing a space with, but if something like everlong came on. like. picture this:

last song ends (it was really punchy or grunge, just different from what's about to follow) and there's that split-second of silence that wouldn't matter UNLESS the next song starts off soft and kind of serious. it's a complete atmospheric reset. everlong does that-- the beginning notes are these kind of blurry guitar notes. it's like you can see them obscured behind a thick curtain. it's the kind of softness that if you were listening with headphones in public you wouldn't be able to hear over the crowd even with anc. unfiltered guitar starts with an urgent cymbal beat. guitar, drums, and cymbal are repetitive and grasping for something. the first words sung are a raspy "hello/i've waited here for you/everlong."

it doesn't have to be everlong, it's the first one that came to me off the top of my head but really any song that talks about wanting someone and is a clear musical contrast from everything before. i personally would not be ok if i was sitting there with my best friend who shared the same specific love of life that i had and this beast just rose out of the sea in the middle of us

Finally got brave enough to listen to Saviors and.....I don't hate it? It's kinda good? I suppose that's a win after I've hated everything they've put out for the last 15 years.

I didn't get into The Longshot until 2020 and I remember not understanding how Billie could write those really very good Longshot songs in 2018 or whenever and then regress into whatever the fuck he was doing with FOAMF. Saviors finally feels like the coherent Longshot album I was looking for, although it still doesn't sound like a Green Day album to me. But I'm not mad at it, so I'll let it slide.
