I've been thinking a lot about the whole "kepler fell in love with jacobi right as jacobi was falling out of love with him" (source) and I can't stop thinking about all the ways their relationship could have looked like.

I think the most realistic version of events is that they were in love at different points and never acted on it. Isn't that just brutal? Jacobi fell head over heels the moment kepler showed up on his doorstep. We know for a fact that he was driven by nothing but kepler: the man who gave him purpose again. It's the defining piece of his life after being dropped from the military. He gave everything he had not to goddard but Warren. He let himself become a monster in pursuit of being loyal. And of course, he loves him, but it's a non-starter. Kepler is the "artist formerly known as"-- a man committed to being nothing anymore. The man who pulls rank on him DURING his anniversary surprise reveal (insane). Jacobi knows him well enough to never bring it up.

Meanwhile, Kepler uses Jacobi. He conditions him. Molds him. Trains him. Kepler is a weapon and Jacobi is whatever a weapon needs. So that's their relationship... until Alana dies.

Here's where I make two amendments on the og post. 1. Jacobi did not fall out of love with Kepler; he gave up on him. Alana was the only other thing in Jacobi's life. He's unable to maintain any other relationship outside of the two of them. So, once Alana is gone, all he's left with is the emotional dead end of his and Kepler's relationship. There's no more hoping. There's no more status quo. The balance-- the dynamic-- is shattered. So why not just be angry? Why not confront Kepler's weaknesses for what they are? Kepler's a hopeless, spineless tool who's given up on having any ambitions of his own.

All that said, is that falling out of love? Can you rewrite history that fast? It's such a powerful feeling of bitterness and resentment, but I think it just sits on top of the love. It feels even more bitter in contrast.

Amendment 2: Kepler did not fall in love with Jacobi; he realized that he'd loved Jacobi for a long time. There's nothing about the final act of Wolf 359 that would imply Kepler was seeing something new and attractive about Jacobi. Rather, he experienced a paradigm shift in their relationship. Once he loses his status-- his mission-- he is forced to reckon with reality. The "artist formerly known as" is a lie he told himself. There is no such thing. As much as he doesn't want to be, he is a person. He eats and sleeps and breathes. He needs other people and has built relationships that-- unbeknownst to him-- were about more than just work.

Alana wasn't just a good agent. She was kind, talented, and deserving. Jacobi wasn't just well-trained and obedient. He was... needed. They are the only two people who fit together. They are the only two people who understand this life. Every mission. Every atrocity. Every joke. Every long story short. Every holiday party. Every firework. Wasn't that love the whole time? Its not new, its just a "bigger picture."

I don't think Kepler fully knows. I don't think he can. Deprogramming takes far more work than that. But I think he has a guess. I think that's enough to throw himself out of an airlock in the hopes it saves Jacobi.

Maybe it's silly. It's been a long time since this podcast has been remotely popular but it's important to me that it was love the whole time. They were just never in agreement about it. They are so awful and beautiful.

I think it says a lot about Artemis’ relationship with his father that the first thing he thinks when Fowl Sr. pulls a philosophical 180 and starts talking about how family is everything and the fortune is irrelevant in comparison to that is “Ah, the fairy magic must have changed his personality.”

What kind of a man was Fowl Sr. before that the concept of him putting his family above his fortune was so bizarre, so alien to Artemis that his first assumption was not that the trauma of being held hostage for two years had caused a psychological shift, caused him to re-prioritize, but that it must be fairy magic?

I know he saw Angeline’s mental health recover, so it’s not too far of a jump to make that assumption, but for it to be the first thing he thinks of?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he was some kind of horrendous monster, but when you put things together, Fowl Sr.? Sucks as a father. Neglectful at best and (unintentionally) emotionally abusive at worst.

We learn in TTP that Artemis had to email and schedule appointments to spend time with his father, and such “appointments” were (presumably) usually work-related, and that Artemis went to such lengths as standing on a specific flagstone by the hearth just because his father did not want to crane his neck when they spoke. His childhood was a time of “order and discipline” as stated by himself.

Then we see how he acts with the twins, how he lets them barge into the master bedroom and climb all over him, how he allows this childish behavior in them because…well…they’re children. And how Artemis laments that it’s “too late” for him. That he’s “too old” (He’s fourteen now, not counting his time in limbo. fourteen. Seventeen if you do include it, which is still not great.) Even hugging is off the table for him in his own mind.

Angeline assures him in TEC that this “change of heart” is to who Artemis Sr. used  to be before he took over the family business but Artemis has such a hard time believing that that it just makes me wonder how their interactions must have gone before he left for Murmansk.

I also just wonder about Artemis’ thoughts on his place in the family as the Heir(TM) and as the remnants of a past they so desperately want to leave behind. The twins will never know their father as the head of a criminal empire the way Artemis did. The expectations placed on him, and what kind of effect that might have on his concept of a future family. I’ve always personally read him as demi both on the romantic and sexual spectrum, but for the sake of the (assuming prior) expectation of “continuing the empire” for lack of a better way to put it, what sort of reservations does he have with the concept of being a father? Does he fear becoming like his own? Obviously by the end of the series that’s not an issue, but earlier on? Did he even think about it? I mean knowing Artemis he probably would have made a clone or something, but still. That’s a different rant though.

My point is that Artemis and his father have such a strained relationship and it’s keeping me up at night.

outside of the fact that everyone who has sex is murdered by the narrative, this is a surprisingly chill portrayal of female sexuality? these teen girls are horny and actively enjoying Getting It On with their boytoys. no pushy boyfriends sneaking in through their bedroom windows--these ladies are taking the initiative to sneak out and GET SOME. one of them gets laid and then immediately orders her boyfriend to get her a beer. (yes she gets Slashered soon afterward, but so does the boyfriend so honestly, gender equality.) yes the Final Girl is the only one not having sex, but she's not bullied for that, nor are her friends slut shamed except possibly by being murdered by the narrative

actually the only character who is shown being morally condemned on-screen is michael myers. specifically FOR his violent overreaction to other people's sex lives. (people he is spying on). metaphorically, the villain is American Puritanism sticking its judgy nose into other people's business.

but actually the real villain is the doctor. guy's a judgemental, shaming, pathologizing asshole. and he's been in charge of michael's care since he was SIX YEARS OLD? kid never had a chance. i'd go on a killing spree too

also the parents. where are the parents? it's halloween night and all the teenage girls are home babysitting their younger siblings? come to think of it, michael's first victim was his own older sister, whom he killed while she was babysitting him. teen girls are really shouldering a labour burden here. maybe parentification is the true villain

side note: mike commits his first murder wearing a clown costume...which is never referenced again? his 'iconic' costume is a generic mask and wig and jumpsuit, when we coulda had a Killer Clown Michael Myers??? travesty
