The Kunlun Mountains stretch across western China, extending 2,500 kilometers from the Pamir Plateau (at the Xinjiang-Tajikistan border) eastward into Qinghai and northern Sichuan. As one of Central Asia’s most significant mountain ranges, they form a natural barrier and hold deep mythological importance. Located in central Yunnan Province, the Ailao Mountains run 500 kilometers along a northwest-southeast axis, serving as a transitional zone between the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Hengduan Mountains. Their dense forests and rugged terrain have earned notoriety for real-world dangers. (A while back, a netizen livestreaming in the Ailao Mountains captured an unidentified creature. That video went viral and got taken down later.)
