It's rather interesting that each of the Yuus so far in the manga have been foils of sort to the overblotter in question (disciplined vs strict, competitive vs lazy, seemingly okay in body image vs puts up a mask, in order). Makes me excited to see what future Yuus will be like!!

Yes, it seems that the pattern for the manga!Yuu is that each serves as a foil or a “mirror” to the Episode’s respective OB boy. The idea is super interesting, but I hope they go further with it and actually let the Yuus engage with the OB boy of their Episode in a meaningful way. There’s both similarities and key differences between them, and I think that would make for an excellent opportunity for them to learn from each other, but also for Yuu to have a more active role in the OB boy’s steady, gradual change of heart and character. The way things are currently set up, the manga!Yuus don’t seem to have character arcs of their own or develop in any significant way from start to end; they’re just there to be the “good” example of what each OB boy struggles to attain.

For the Episode of Heartslabyul, I think the distinction between Yuuken’s discipline and Riddle’s strictness is an important one to make. At first glance, you might think being “disciplined” and being “strict” are the same thing. They’re actually not! “Disciplined” refers to control and restraint of oneself. That’s what Yuuken is! He is stoic but knows when to step forward and get serious. Meanwhile, Riddle is “strict”—demanding that both he and others obey the rules to a staggeringly stringent degree. Riddle isn’t “disciplined” because he forces his ideals on others and does not control himself when his temper flares. He is serious all the time and unrelenting in his pursuit of upholding the rules. In this way, Yuuken is actually the kind of person Riddle works toward becoming post-OB: someone with good control of his words and actions, while also observing the rules within reasonable wiggle room.

Another thing!! Yuuken’s style of leadership also greatly contrasts with Riddle’s. Throughout the Episode of Heartslabyul, we see that Yuuken is thinking about his kendo team mates, which spurs him to act or to comfort other characters because they remind him of his teammates. This was the case during the scene when Deuce confessed to his past as an ex-delinquent and Yuuken encouraged him in his endeavors to improve—just as he encouraged his kendo kouhai at the start of the manga. In spite of his stoic face, Yuuken is compassionate and considers the people around him. Meanwhile, Riddle rules with an iron fist and it’s always his way or the highway. He never once considers his classmates, their POVs, or their circumstances, always holding up his own interpretation of the rules as absolute and remaining unwilling to compromise.

For Yuuka, I wouldn’t say the contrast between her and Leona is in competitiveness vs being lazy. From what I’ve seen of her, Yuuka isn’t particularly competitive or lazy. She’s usually the one keeping people (mostly Grim) out of competition or squabbles, and she’s not exactly eager to compete (she steps up when people challenge or threaten her). I would hesitate to slot Leona (based on his actions in book 2 alone) as one or the other as well. Like… how is he lazy if he’s putting forth the effort to enact this whole scheme? And how is he competitive if the point of his plan is to get Diasomnia out of the tournament? Wouldn’t it be truly more “competitive” if he wanted to square up against them anyway?

I would say maybe a more apt point of mirrored traits for Yuuka and Leona are in terms of morality—or, I guess, how far they’re willing to stretch the definition of “playing fair”. Leona is the one that plays loosely, willing to resort to dirty tactics and skirting the rules if it means getting what he wants. Yuuka, however, is more morally upright. She’s keeping her friends out of trouble and stepping up to fight Savanaclaw mobs only when they pose a threat to her. In these ways, she “plays by the book”. As a fellow athlete as well, Yuuka would be able to understand Leona in the struggle to perform and to be seen. Not only that, but they share scars. The reasoning for Leona’s is left unexplained, but Yuuka’s is from a sporting injury. They could totally relate not only in their lived experiences, but by their physical markers.

We’ve only just met Yuuta, so I don’t know if we can draw any definitive conclusions as to how he’s a foil to Azul. However, we can deduce some parallels from his one chapter appearance so far. Both Yuuya and Azul come from restaurants that their respective family operates. Furthermore, Yuuta is and Azul was, overweight. For Azul, this became one of the sources of shame for him. His peers underestimated his competence in part due to his size, and this would later lead to Azul changing a lot about himself to appear “stronger” (including a more restrictive diet in order to maintain his new body). This is not true of Yuuta, who still retains his extra weight and happily chows on food. In fact, I don’t believe weight is even brought up by Yuuta at all. He’s content with his life the way it is, much more chill rather than stoic.

I think another HUGE point that helps Yuuta serve as a foil to Azul is their attitudes on gratitude. Yuuta is thankful for such little things like having food—he even gets mad at Grim for not being thankful for it!! This is a departure from Azul, who, despite running what is basically a wish-granting service, is never satisfied with what he already has. He is always concerned with getting “more”, be it money, influence, information, or abilities robbed from other students. The insecurity especially shows in how he desperately tries to protect his valuable golden contracts with a clever ruse. He keeps collecting and collecting, viewing those physical signifiers (the things he collects) as proof of his “success”.

My prediction for book 3 is 🤔 Azul will definitely see bits of his old self in Yuuta. His old self, whom Azul personally deemed as a weak and inferior version of himself, a version which he has a hard time coming to accept. I don’t think Azul would hate Yuuta or something that extreme, but Azul would feel pity for him and think him pathetic. Going hand-in-hand with the events of book 3, I believe Azul will underestimate Yuuta’s capabilities in the same way that Azul’s old bullies underestimated him when he was little. It would be such a cool parallel because, in this way, we’d get the sense that Azul has become no different than his bullies, pushing around the weak and (arguably just as bad) taking advantage of them for his own gain. And it would ultimately be those traits of Yuuta’s that Azul may have deemed weaknesses of his old self that save the day and get Azul to recognize he’s been living in denial this whole time, thus helping him to better appreciate his old self.

Naoko Yamada, Bakeneko MagiMon, the "Calico Combatant". A friendly girl who cares too much about others. She values friendship a lot and claims to dislike competition while enjoying a competitive spirit. Her mother and her two sisters are also MagiMonsters.

Hikaru Katsushika, Chouchin-Obake MagiMon, heir to the Katsushika Industries corporations. She comes from a wealthy family, but she harbors a visceral hatred to everything surrounding her social class. She's the designated leader of operations and treasurer of the Team. She looks constantly angry at all times, but she is a very kind soul so long as you do not anger her... And she has a very short fuse.

Tsubame Fujimaru, Nukekubi MagiMonster. She doesn't like talking and she doesn't want to befriend anyone. So, there's not much known about her. One thing is apparent: she is strongly motivated by her sense of justice and will always be there to save people... To the point of self-destruction. She was reluctant to join the team, but conceded in the end due to feeling like she owes a debt to them.

Yuuka Morishita, Furutsubaki no Rei MagiMonster, "Lady Camellia". She seems dainty and polite, but there is a sadistic and ultraviolent nature underneath that facade. She is obsessed by the urban legend of Masked Hunter and claims he has "saved her life". She accepted to join the team under the condition of toning down her violence as a MagiMonster. She considers owing a lot to Yuzuki after she helped her in battle when she used to go solo.

Your eyes widened, ‘he’s not serious is he?’ you fiddled with the hem of your dress-shirt, slightly shaking, while you let out a nervous chuckle “F-funny!”, your words came out shaky and abrupt, something that displeased him, as he clicked his tongue, the sound loud to your ears, as your body became hyper aware of its surroundings. 

Thankfully, he let out a small airy chuckle that echoed across your ears, you followed after laughing along, doing your best to play along and praying that the hour would end soon. 

“Aha.. just kidding” his expression softened, as he settled down properly, a reaction which helped soothe your nerves. 

“It’s quite hot in here” you stated, feeling a bit off, your body temperature has risen quite a bit and your mind feels hazy, blurred even. “Oh really?” a moment of silence falls between the two of you, as you felt much more unsteady than before. “I find it cold in here, actually…”

He continued on and on, but your mind closed off as you tried to stay awake, a sudden feeling of slumber overcoming you and engulfing you in its embrace. 

“Would you like some cold water y/n?” he asked, only to receive silence in return, something that only resulted in aggravating him further, as he heightened his voice just a bit, repeating the previous sentence in a much sterner tone. After the third time, he turned around finally facing your form, which seemed barely alive, “Oh— maybe I overdid the drug usage..”

hi, do you have any idea as to why the novel Yuu has severe social anxiety as opposed to the other Yuus? The others definitely show to be introverted and reserved, but the novel Yuu seems to struggle a lot more with speaking up and asserting themself. I find it very interesting, but I guess it’s more apparent since we can read their thoughts in the novel. I’m just wondering what you think… Thanks so much for the blog! No one (including Yana) has really commented on the Yuus thus far, but I think your theory is very good!

It seems like a very shy person might be more difficult to portray in a manga than it is in a novel where, as you say, we can read his thoughts and understand where he is coming from, where in a manga we would just see someone panicking without knowing what is going through their head.

The manga team of Yuuken, Yuuka and Yuuta all seem like strong, confident characters who are comfortable with their own identities, whereas Yuuya seems to be trying to figure out who he is in real time.

One of the parts that has always stuck out to me is the dream sequence in the first novel, where it seems like Yuuya gets a brief look into how life at his school is continuing without him. It ends with:

"He is neither sad, nor angry. From the bottom of his heart, he feels a sense of relief.

It is fine, this way.

This is good.

This is what he’d wanted.

Because he has always, always..."

And there is also the end of the first novel where Ace calls Yuuya stubborn and Yuuya starts questioning every decision he has ever made:

"Watching Riddle-senpai throughout all of this, Yuuya thinks he may have come to understand something. Maybe he just prioritized his own principles over friendship. If that is the case, he may be far more self-centered than he’d realized."

We are repeatedly told that Yuuya's top priority has always been avoiding confrontation, and through the story he seems to be coming to terms with how that choice has formed who he is as a person, affected his interpersonal relationships, and the realization that maybe he isn't so different from the students of NRC.

We can only guess at what direction things are going and how it might all converge one day, and it is so exciting to be here for it :>

As someone who wishes for MC to play a bigger role, I do hope we get it in book 8.

And I agree that Yuu is mixture of the heroes who oppose the villains, this can be especially seen in the manga.

Yuuken and Riddle: Riddle who is a tyrannical versus Yuuken who is a good leader as well, but doesn’t necessarily follow every rule.

Leona and Yuuka: Yuuka is hard working and opposite to Leona, also she has a parallel scar.

Yuuta and Azul: Everything Azul hated about himself can be seen in Yuuta.

Each Yuu is a foil of the OB character, so I can see how the protagonist theory works.

Our MC in the game is a observer after all, but also the one who influences and forwards the events, little bit at a time.

I can also see the RSA being twst versions of the princess, it would be very cute honestly. Also nostalgic because of my kh history.

Summary: Ri wakes up in the middle of the night and goes to the kitchen to get a glass of water, only to find the Prefect of Ramshackle - Yuu - making Strawberry Cheesecake. The Overblot of Heartslabyul & Magicless Prefect have a conversation.

[Dark Crimson Eyes opened as Ri was pulled out of his nightmare, panting and gasping for air to flow into his lungs as he sat up in the bed that he had been given, running his hand through his dark red hair before he ran his hands down his face before looking around his room - he was still in Rmashackle; not...in the location where he was trapped in. Ri lowered his head for a while before his keen ears picked up on the sound of someone messing with the pots in Ramshackle's Kitchen. Ri threw the blankets off his body and walked out of the room, down the darkened hall, until he saw the light coming from the kitchen. Ri peeked around the corner to see Yuu making something.]

Ri (Looking at Yuu): Prefect?

Yuu: There are multiple types of cheesecake, but I love 5 flavors that I love to make: Plain, Strawberry, Blueberry, Cherry, and Cinnamon Roll Flavours.

Ri (Walking over to Yuu and looking at the 5 empty pie crusts): 5 Different Flavours? And...these pie crusts... Did you hand make these yourself, Prefect?

Yuu: Yes. It's so much better if you make the crusts yourself, instead of buying the pie crusts from TWST Mart.

Ri: What is the reason you are making all of these cakes? Are you hosting an event?

Yuu: No, these are for you guys.

Yuu (Slowly pouring the Plain Cheesecake Batter into the 1st Pie Crust): What are you talking about, Ri? None of you are my enemies.

Yuu: Ri, you share a body and life with the Housewarden of Heartslabyul, who is responsible for upholding the 810 Rules of the Queen of Hearts' Court. It's a highly stressful job. Moreover, your mother's strict upbringing must have added to the pressure. Therefore, I don't find it fair to blame you for anything you may have done.

Ri (Looks down and rubs his arm): You... You know about my upbringing?

Yuu (Turns to face Ri): During the Overblot Battle, I saw...something. I saw Riddle's Life - your life - and everything you have been through; your choices were made for you and you couldn't think for yourself. You were robbed of the childhood you were entitled to and even your friendships with Trey and Che'nya were taken away from you. It was fate that you and Trey were reunited....however, that was not fair to you.

[Ri looks down at the ground as Yuu's words sink and the kindness that Yuu has shown Riddle ever since the Overblot Accident, the kindness he is showing him... He doesn't understand this. How can the Magicless Prefect refuse to hate him? All the pain he caused the members of dorm members of his house... Why doesn't he hate him? Why?]

[Ri suddenly freezes up as he feels Yuu's arms wrapped around his smaller frame and holding him close, just as an elder brother would comfort his younger brother when he was close to breaking. Ri looked up at Yuu's face, the Prefect was silent and just wanted to show Ri that he didn't hate him. Ri felt his eyes building up with tears before he wrapped his smaller arms around Yuu, allowing his tears to fall and become soaked into Yuu's Nightshirt.]

[Once Ri managed to calm down, Yuu decided to share the last 2 slices of Strawberry Cheesecake with Ri and brewed some tea that helped him to get sleep. Ri sat at the table while Yuu was filling the other pie crusts with different flavors before placing them in the fridge just as the tea kettle was steaming. Yuu grabbed two cups and tea bags before preparing the tea and making it as Ri suggested.]

[The Prefect and the Overblot sat at the table, drinking their tea and eating their cheesecake, while having conversation for about an hour when Ri started to yawn; showing that the tea was starting to take effect. Yuu stood from his chair and lifted the smaller figure in his arms like a tender brother and carried him to his room, placed him on the bed, covered him in the blanket, and stood up to walk away but was stopped when Ri's hand reached out and grabbed his pants leg.]

Ri: Stay... Until I fall asleep... Please?

Yuu (Smies): Sure, Little Rose Bud. I got your back.

[Yuu sat on the end of the bed, using his large hand to caress Ri's Dark Red Hair and humming a song from his world until Ri drifted off into dreamland. The Prefect sat there for a while getting up and heading off to bed for a while before he had to get up to make breakfast.]
