(Spoilers for The Locked Tomb, esp Nona the Ninth)

I know a lot of folks were meh on the storyline with Nona and the schoolkids, and felt it didn’t really progress the plot much.

But I think that they might actually be the most important factor in the end. They were the purest, most human connections Nona had. And now that she has returned to being Alecto, that is vital. She is angry, she has been hurt and betrayed. House belief is that she will end Jod and the world. And maybe she would.

But you can’t take loved away.

And it is stated over and over that Nona loves those kids. Those scrappy, coarse, rough little survivors. And Noodle.

And its no mere chance that they are literal children. They are humanity’s future. And I think that love is what will be the deciding factor for Alecto. She won’t want to destroy them. She will want a better future for them. And Harrow will follow her in that goal. She will have found her true god, like Anastasia before her. And they will be what finally truly saves humanity.

Because you can’t take loved away. And Nona/Alecto loves those kids.

I had this AU archived off my accounts for a few years, but I'm thinking about it a lot more these days so I'm digging it up for sketches.

This is Kudari from Codebreaker, functionally the starting antagonist for the story when Emmet accidentally collides with him and takes parts of his body.

For a little debrief, the main idea of Codebreaker is that Emmet discovers that he exists in a false reality, and that there is a parallel plane where all of the instructions for his reality exist. He finds his way to this plane by accident after walking back from another lonely day at work, and is hellbent on learning how to manipulate it in the hopes that he can recover Ingo with that knowledge. Kudari is his own set of instructions, who he partly dismantles, allowing him to actually interact with the code. This leaves a hollowed out shell that starts trying to find his own way to get his body back from Emmet.

I'd been thinking about the Beta Submas leaks which lead me to sketching him again. Here's the first rough warmup sketch I did with a fight between him and Emmet.

From there I just started reworking his old design to be worse 💀

It's taking me ages to write this chapter because every time I look through old VODs / notes to check something, I come across moments like this that make me want to lie down face-first on the floor:

[Context: Pac commits to the idea of taking the Happy Pills so he can create a cure. He's about to write a note to Cellbit to explain his plan.]

Pac: If Cellbit puts himself in this position, it's worse for everyone, because Cellbit is smarter when it comes to coming up with strategic plans, so he is the thinking mind of the Favela Five group, so if he no longer has the mind, he’s not capable of solving this whole problem, you know? But if I put myself in this position to help Cellbit so he can get the cure... You understand? It's better if I'm the bait. Right? I can't- I can't carry things alone guys, I've already lost Mike [...] if I lose Cellbit and I alone had to carry things, I won't be able to. But I think Cellbit can manage better. He is more independent, and he has Roier. He has a husband. I'm trying to– to be lucid here, understand? That's all.

trying to gather my thoughts on unruhe. something about this exchange is so vital to me…about how scully maybe isn’t as natural a seeker as mulder. about how her work as a pathologist is focused on “how” rather than “why”…whereas mulder’s profiling is the inverse. a woman is dead and a man killed her and no amount of probing the inner workings of his psyche, his dreams, his nightmares will remedy that situation. discovering the why doesn’t bring about any deeper sense of justice or peace. because really, no why could ever really explain the mundane horror of a woman’s abduction and murder. if anything, it just more starkly reveals the ugly simplicity of the human capacity for cruelty.

but i also love how later, she leans on the why. she channels mulder and his profiler brain. schnauz even picks up on it (“great. now they got you talking like sigmund freud,” in reference to him calling mulder freud during his interrogation). she asks him why he does it. why her. why this. why did his sister kill herself. why did his father do what he did. part of it’s to keep schnauz talking but it’s also another example of how she reaches for him, even metaphorically, in moments of fear and difficulty.

i also love how this episode, with its themes of unrest and strife and trouble, focuses on scully. mulder is usually the more restless character, always searching and seeking and chasing and moving. but scully is just as, if not maybe even more so. her mother’s remaining daughter. her father’s disappointment. a catholic to her bones, even as she lapses. a woman in a man’s job. who imagines a life to be a husband and kids and big sunday dinners, but who can’t stop following the mad man in the basement. who always insists she’s fine, who locks it all away, who chafes and squirms and explodes in impulsive incendiary bursts. who is always always trying.

there are just some things we don’t or can’t look too deeply into. if god is real, or why the woman in front of us is dead. scully will dig and scrape for proof and explanations for many things, but some interrogations aren’t worth the effort, or the fear of what might be found. some things just are, and they’re too big to move or change or overcome. women die because men kill them. what the hell does it matter?

#the x files #does this say anything at all? you decide.#to me this is especially a specific moment that points out the difference is gender dynamic between mulder and scully #which is not to say that mulder fails to grasp the depth of vulnerability women particularly face - he often does #but there sometimes feels like there’s something a little more…academic? to his approach? as a profiler and an investigator #in the sense of like. seeking out reasons and building out the psyche of the perpetrator even once he’s caught #like there’s a woman lying dead on the road and her killers in custody so why are we talking about dreams and nightmares and psychic photos?#scully as a woman who has experienced gendered violence doesn’t need to go probing because this is how the world is #men kill women because they can.#there is something vital about living in a violent world as a woman that mulder cannot fully understand #idk if i’m articulating my thoughts on this clearly at all #like there’s so much here…the fact that it’s lobotomies…the loss of the mind and sense of self #and scully is or at least likes to think of herself as cerebral so that’s terrifying to contemplate #and then being confronted with how restless she is and refusing to look at it….#also i know at the end she says she sees the value in looking at why monsters do what they do in order to understand them #and ultimately stop them #but i think that still troubles her and #doesn’t come easily to her #IDK i’m just saying stuff ok bye

did not write as much as i liked today but i made the playlist for the nanowrimo 2023 project that has a specific order to reflect the tones of the story and that's the closest i get to outlining before a draft so

#idk how to explain this from a I Dont Actually Outline Before Drafting Usually POV but #making playlists with a specific order feels like the first layer to understanding a narrative bc its like i can hear the tone of it unfold #i dont need to know what it will look like on page but i can look at a playlists body #and it feels like i can see the ebbs and flows of the narrative's tone/vibes/etc. the emotional movement #which for the type of stories i write that helps a lot LOL #making playlists that way kind of feels like ive put the story into a heart monitor. its not showing me all the vitals but its showing me #the movement of the story's core #OKAY WAITTT i think the best way to explain it is #i'm a very vibe driven writer but also vibes are very sensory to me #when i make a playlist its not just songs that remind me of the wip its songs that SOUND like the wip to me #i have a very deep sensory relationship to stories + sensory things connect me to the Vibes #and the more familiar i am with the Vibes of a story the easier it is for me to enter the story and then figure out what actually happens #which is why i prefer to discovery write most of the time bc being deep in the story like that #feels like a similar level of immersion that i get from things like playlists #PERSONALLY!#so when i make playlists in a specific order the songs usually group themselves together and it feels like i can hear how the story moves #through those groups without knowing what the events look like yet #playlists and moodboards etc are literally integral to me because stories usually start very abstract/vibey in my brain #rather than a clear idea and i need something more tangible/sensory to flesh it out

oh my god. i just saw some of my OLD OLD digital art like before i made my art blog and holy fuck. suddenly faith in myself completely restored

I love laying down, literally doing nothing, and having my heartrate go up to 120 for 15+ minutes straight, having my chest hurt, and finding it hard to breathe :) but nooooo my ECGs and holter monitor and listening to my chest are all 100% normal and chill and nothing is wrong with my heart at all
