i think jiang yanli knew.

i think, of all the people close to wei wuxian, of all the people watching — with either worry or wariness or some combination of the two — it was wei wuxian's shijie who figured it out. figured him out.

jiang yanli who knew both of her brothers far better than they knew themselves.

jiang yanli who cared for them both as their power grew, outpacing her own, and watched them learn to shrug off the little inconveniences that once left them bedridden.

jiang yanli who has had a weak core for her entire life. who also felt the cold wei wuxian shivered against.

jiang yanli who knew well when her brother was overstating his own confidence. or when he was hiding something from her.

jiang yanli who knew what it was like to feel lesser-than, to feel left behind. to work to protect her family anyway.

jiang yanli who was a medic during the sunshot campaign. who stayed with wei wuxian after he collapsed. who made his bedside her home for three days. who would have known how to check spiritual power, would have seen a cultivator's wounds healing, would have remembered how jiang cheng looked on his sickbed when wen qing discovered his golden core had been crushed.

jiang yanli who knows wei wuxian can do anything he sets his mind to, and would do anything to protect her and jiang cheng.

i think jiang yanli spent three days at the end of the war knowing and wishing she didn't and unsure what she could do to help her brother— her brothers. i think she was too scared to ask lan wangji if his music would work on someone with low spiritual power, on a civilian, but i think she wanted to.

and i think she knew, just like wei wuxian did, that if she told jiang cheng, it would ruin everything.

i wonder when jiang yanli started to regret that decision, and why it was too late to fix it.

I hate how the responsibility is always given to Wei Wuxian. "Take care of Jiang Cheng and Yanli". "It's your fault". "You need to go to a certain place". He is always the one who needs to be responsible for every single thing and I can't address how much I despise it. He shouldn't be the one to carry the entire world in his back

something i would love to read, but definitely can't write it myself

a dark-ish yunmeng jiang sibs where they see 3zun pledging sworn brotherhood and go you know what fuck you all yunmeng is closed, no one allowed in without an official stamp (although we're only going to give those out to non-cultivators with family in the area or something to sell), tax for foreign boats are doubled as well as local products price (unless you a. have a stamp, b. live in yunmeng) and also, we're going to take these wens here without telling you first to "rebuild" for us, thanks for nothing, bye

and then they distribute official letters to pin it on all major cities notice walls, as well as pay for tropes around the jianghu to play some satirizing or just telling people in a funny way how the war went and how the jiang were humiliated etc

then they somehow ended up having jin zixuan running away from his sect to marry jiang yanli, and wei wuxian getting out one (too many) night(s and days) and coming back with a husband, and a new kid (or two! look, a-yuan, siblings for you!), and probably his shishu and his buddy too

and lan xichen, the one most criticized by yunmeng, is going to whine like "but it wasn't what i wanted!! you misunderstood" :(((( and be really shocked when his brother just says bye and never comes back (to stay, for tea, perhaps, with lots of judgemental flavored sweets)

Summary: With Wen Ruohan is interested in Wei Wuxian due to his talent with talismans, Gusu Lan and Yunmeng Jiang agree to an arranged marriage between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian to prevent Qishan Wen from growing more powerful (while there is still a threat of war looming). Things get off to the usual rocky start, with Lan Wangji and much of Gusu Lan (except for the younger Lans) looking down on Wei Wuxian. This disapproval eventually leads to a situation where Wei Wuxian is framed for a crime by Su Mishan and friends and is punished by the discipline whip and seclusion in the Cold Pond Cave. A cave that holds more than one secret that will impact Cloud Recesses and the Jianghu's future. Kay's comments: A story for fans of the "Wei Wuxian forced to marry into Gusu Lan Clan, Lan Wangji is not amused" storyline with an added bonus of letting the female characters live and safe the day while Wangxian slowly and inevitably fall in love despite a very rocky start. Bonus points for Lan Yi being Wei Wuxian's greatest ally in Gusu and his genius being appreciated. Excerpt: Inside, it was mostly open and divided into three distinct areas. After removing his shoes (somewhat difficult with all the robes), Wei Wuxian stepped into the main room, which seemed to be a receiving area, and stopped to look around. Lan Wangji quickly blocked his view of the sleeping area and pointed to a sliding door towards the back left of the main room. “Your room is there.” “Uhm, okay.” Wei Wuxian remained still for a few seconds until it became clear that his husband expected him to go to the room. “I guess I’ll check it out.” As soon as he turned around, Lan Wangji headed for his sleeping area and, once inside, closed the sliding doors between it and the main room with a resounding ‘snap.’ A moment later, the candles inside the house flickered out.
