The Jiang family always impress me in how well-written of a dysfunctional family they are and how accurately the parents' issues project onto JYL, JC and WWX. It also makes me slightly worried about MXTX and her home life lol

#We know they came from the Yu sect along with YZY and described as 'young women' so did they likely were young when they left#And we know that YZY favours them immensely (to the point she lets them speak a lot more freely than she does her own children)#And they in turn are extremely loyal to herand very skilled fighters.#So what's up with that dynamic? Who are they to her? Who are they to each other? Who are they as individuals?#My theory is that they were initially servant girls YZY took in and trained (hence the whip proficiency)#I also very much love the idea of this double standard; that YZY has these surrogate 'children' she favours over her own#to shadow JFM's affection for WWX (child who is not his own).#Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli just keep losing!!! - absolutely fascinating.

also I think there's something to be said here for class/status cutting both ways -- that JFM feels like he can favor WWX and Yu Ziyuan allowing these liberties to her handmaids precisely because they aren't members of the gentry class and will never have the same expectations to meet? Because they don't have the same obligations to them that blood would confer? (I don't feel qualified to speak on Asian parenting styles but I have definitely read meta that implies that)

Me: part of my fascination with the Jiang family is how dysfunctional it is for everyone in it. How it's a perfect example of love being there but not fixing anything - the love was there but no one expressed it in ways the others understood or accepted, to the point that they all wondered if the love was even there at all. my dearest fellow mdzs stans, i really don't want to spoil anyone's fun but sometimes some things must be said. please do NOT mistake fanon characteristics for canon characteristics because by GOD is it frustrating to dissect a character when all anyone wants to do is blindly turn away from the very vivid and metastasizing flaws.

jiang cheng is an extremely complicated character, and that's why we love him. but by god, he is a jealous, self-victimizing asshole with a massive inferiority complex who likes to torture (probably) innocent look-a-likes of his (as far as he knew) dead adjacent family member. jesus christ this isn't some simple case of miscommunication (well it is but, you know no amount of communication will ever mend the giant chasm that developed between them. especially not with asians raised within the most classical case of asian parenting, i mean come on now) but a matter of deep and intense self-loathing developed since early childhood projecting violently outwards. let me be clear. he hates wei wuxian. he loathes him. he wants to kill him with his own hands again and again so some part of his convoluted sense of justice and superiority will be fulfilled. he's a classist, a bully, and abusive to everyone around him. ong at the end of mdzs, i was nearly crying tears of joy when jin guangyao flayed him flat on his ass bc that man needed to hear it. he needed to feel it. he needed to stop blaming others and blame himself.

and!! he's homophobic!! the entire cultivation world is, yes, but he's the only one we see give wei ying and lan zhan active shit for it!!

point is...his complexity makes him interesting. as a child, he was pretty alright tbh. he was understandably upset when three of his dogs got taken away and he saw his dad give a completely random kid such a gentle hug when jiang cheng never received one so far. he was a kid, and it was sad and helped the readers get a glimpse at the already dysfunctional family dynamics before wei ying came into the picture. as an adolescent/teen, yes he had a lot of unresolved rage and inferiority issues building up when he was constantly being compared to wei wuxian by his mother and not given enough reassurance from his father (once again, all present before wei ying...everyone just likes to dump the shit on him bc it's easier to point fingers at others than at yourself). perhaps he could have turned out differently if literally either of his parents stepped up and took accountability. however, after the burning of lotus pier? after the golden core transfer? after wei ying stuck around as his subordinate just as he promised, and protected jiang cheng like he promised, and defected just to save the yunmeng clan's reputation so jiang cheng doesn't have to put up with the other clan's shit, still continuing to keep his promise? after wei ying's death? idk abt y'all, but all bets are off bro.

mxtx makes it a point to make him so irredeemable. he's an exploration of what can go wrong if you let your traumas, self-hatred, and revenge fantasies blind you. he has the worst traits of his parents for a reason, directly contrasting with the other sibling, who is a perfect picture of eldest daughters born into a dysfunctional family. jiang yanli has the best traits of her parents (in terms of compassion and standing up for her family), but the family dynamics also made her the way she was. the responsible, the mediator, the occasional mother, stepping in where madam yu cannot.

there's just so much potential to hold him accountable buried under the pretense of misunderstandings and kinnie moments. he just had so many chances, more than any other character, to make a different choice. to actually look past his misgivings and unlearn the bad habits he used to protect himself as a child. i'm not saying he has to magically heal from all his traumas, but at the very least know not to be like his parents. but he wasn't written that way. because that is what happens when you give into your insecurities and generational trauma.

bottom line: jiang cheng is a fantastic archetype that needs to be explored in all his authenticity, including his moments of loyalty and cruelty.

Fast-forward a few years and he meets trans!wen ning through the school their sons attend.

At first he's majorly sipping vinegar: wen ning had short relationship in college with lan wangji's childhood crush wei wuxian. wen yuan, their son, was born shortly before wei wuxian disappeared.

Over time the knot in lan wangji's heart loosens as he spends more time with wen ning. Their sons became fast friends and enjoy playing together.

He tells himself it's for their sake but he knows the shared grief between them helps, a similar history.

In a shorter time than he'd like to admit, they grow close. Very close.

When wen ning loses his job and risks homelessness, lan wangji insists they move into his home. It's always been too big just for him and lan jingyi.

They cook together, share meals, get their children ready and out them to sleep together.

In no time they feel like a family.

So lan wangji endeavors to make it official. He skips a few steps and asks wen ning to marry him.

After wen ning recovers from the sudden proposal, he stammers out a "no, but we can try going on a date first?"

lwj: "mn, a date may be a wiser first step"

They share a laugh, a few shy kisses, then plan their date.

It takes lan wangi a month tops to convince wn to accept his proposal. Cue the future lans-in-law descending upon the house so that everything can be just right for them both.

what of jiang cheng and wei wuxian you ask??

Well, wei wuxian returns, confesses his undying love for jiang cheng and they live to annoy each other until they're old and gray.

Both wen ning and lan wangji made peace with their love for wei wuxian in the years he was gone, wishing them only the best.

wen ning eventually convinces lan wangji to tell jiang cheng the truth about their son, leading to some hurt feels and shouting matches. Ultimately they agree to joint custody. They're working on the tenuous friendship. For now they at least remain civil for lan jingyi.

As for wwx and his son, he promises to provide wn with all the finical support he needs. Many back payments for the years he was gone! It's clear he needs time to be directly involved with the kid he inadvertently abandoned.

Mostly he doesn't think he deserves it or that it's fair on wen yuan.

Slowly but surely, with jiang cheng shoving and wen ning coaxing, he takes a bigger role in wen yuan's life.

So they all become one big dysfunctional family

The question is quite interesting, because I hadn't never thought in detail about my reasons for choosing specific moments, it's the moment that draws my eyes.

Overlooking how this blog supports women's rights to do wrongs, I like to compare the source material with the web adaptation: like with jiang cheng' dream. Or the gifset I am most emotionally attacked to: this. I still remember that the first time I read jiang cheng smiling looking at his mother (he's the only one who seems truly happy to see her) and it caught my attention: he loves her so much! And she loves him too! I have a soft spot for mother & kid relationship, and I enjoy how their relationship is played in the drama, so, that's how the gifset is born. (the quality is so bad though. At the time I still was using YouTube videos :-/)

Other times, cql and the cast acting choices/interpretations have caught my attention. Like here: the camera shows us, even if briefly, jiang yanli's expression while lan xichen is congratulating jiang cheng: she opens in a little smile only to immediately drop it... What is she thinking? I had in mind another moment to add to the gifset, a parallel, but I felt it was unbiased/leaning toward an exact interpretation, and decided to focus on her expression during jiang cheng's speech to his disciples. Another gifset born due cql choices, is jiang yanli mourning jin zixuan: jin zixuan saying 'I'll take care of you' is a great foreshadowing! I like to think about jiang yanli, looking at jin zixuan's coffin, and remembering that specific moment (or, I've written scenes like this in my jiang yanli survives au lol). the jiang siblings inability to deal with rejection is still so funny.

Other times, mostly born from spite, my gifsets are about themes: love and hurt, jiang cheng protecting his family and being protected, deaths - 1, 2 (initially, I wanted to gif all mdzs's characters' deaths including novel quotes to enlighten the differences between the canon source and the web divergence. I still want to do it! I just need time).

Or I'll do a whole gifset because I want to gif one moment lmao. As in this ao3 tags gifset, I just wanted to include granny wen and wen yuan under the 'rated t for trauma' tag, because I think their past is quite overlooked! (if not to underline who is good and who's bad...) (like, seriously, the wen clan is *great* and I'll obsess over them all more if lotus pier and its dysfunction wasn't there too). Even retelling of jiang cheng and wei wuxian relationship is born due a gif... It is set post canon where the full events of the book play out: after the 13 years WWX comes back in MXY’s body and confronts JGY. The fic picks up a year or two after that with WWX coming back a second time in his own body and this WWX has no knowledge of the 13 years or JGY's meddling and the temple and such, he is as he was when he first died. There are thus then two WWX’s running around and people are like “which, or both, is the real one?” and I think one WWX ends up with LWJ and the other reconciles with JC. I would love to read this again, if anyone can point me to it I will love you forever and ever! Thank you!
