Hi so i usually don’t make posts like this but i wanted to bring attention to an important issue. if you didn’t know humboldt state university recently became a cal poly. This week they sent out an email letting the student body/parents know that they accepted over 1000 freshman. this is way more students than they can handle and because of this they are forcing all of the current students off campus. this means a few things 1. they have rented out hotels (including a motel 6) to have students stay there and they will have to be shuttled back and forth to campus and 2. students will have to find off campus housing. The problem with the second solution is that there simply is not enough housing in the towns surrounding the campus. This means that many students will either have to drop out or become homeless. The university has had many problems that it has not addressed but this had been the tipping point. These problems include but are not limited to: no covid housing(if you get covid you are forced to stay in your dorm with many other people and there is no way to get food without relying on friends), lack of disability resources (there is no disability housing and the disability shuttles are often late/unreliable), and a lack of communication between administration and the student body. The acceptance rate is too high for the new influx of people applying to the university and there is not enough space/resources for everyone. Students have been organizing and pushing back against this new policy. There have been efforts towards community outreach and media attention. There is a protest tomorrow and it is expected that most of the students will show up to send this message home. if you would like to help and support struggling students I have a few resources for you.
Here is a petition for the cause
Here is an article if you would like more information
You can also follow the instagram page @calpolyhomeless to follow the progress of this protest
Thank you so much for reading. Please help as students deserve safe housing!

As the police escalate violence, beat and attack students and professors, and conduct mass arrests, student protesters should know their rights.
Here is the link to the National Lawyer's Guild booklet for protesters.
If you plan on going out to support the protests, please take some time to read through this and know your rights.

Executed Renaissance extended
Writer Volodymyr Vakulenko hid his manuscripts describing the Russian occupation at home, in his garden under a cherry tree. The Russians killed him. The writer Victoria Amelina found those manuscripts. The Russians killed her. The Vivat publishing house published Vakulenko's manuscripts. The Russians attacked the printing house. They killed the workers. Thousands of books were destroyed. The Executed Renaissance of the 21st century was shot. The killers are the same.
"This is how you get used to everything. The main thing is who you remain in all this," Vakulenko wrote.
As a result of yesterday's Russian attack on the printing house in Kharkiv, 50,000 books were burned, - Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
If someone will be in Berlin from 27.05-16.06., you can visit this heart-wrenching exhibition.

Oren Root, a longtime New York City lawyer and Columbia University graduate who was at the school when anti-Vietnam War protests rocked it in 1968, said Shafik's summoning of police was "an extraordinary miscalculation."
"President Shafik and her advisers clearly didn't learn from history," said Root, who was a top editor at The Spectator, the Columbia student newspaper, in 1968 and 1969. “Calling in the cops was clearly a mistake. Things have not gotten any calmer.”

it's very annoying to me how many times I see people talking about the student protests at humboldt and they just call it "cal poly" like... which one?????? There are 3 cal poly schools you have to specify that it's cal poly humboldt!!!!! not cal poly san luis obispo or cal poly pomona... cal poly humboldt.... 😤
#also i will never call it cal poly humboldt it just sounds wrong to me#it will always be humboldt state university to me or just humboldt for short#~

Barricaded doors at the occupation of a campus administration building in California State Polytechnic University Humboldt.
The occupation of Siemens Hall was established after a violent clash with campus and local police in Monday night. The students and community members occupying the building have stated that they have no plans to leave until campus leadership supports a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and divests from companies that support the Israeli military.
Cal Poly Humboldt joins several college campuses across the U.S., including Columbia University in New York City, University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Southern California to occupy campus spaces in support of Palestine.

EDIT: the bail fund has been filled the local SDS is ensuring all money goes to the protesters in jail
its crazy logging in here and seeing nothing about the fact that 25 students were arrested on the cal poly humboldt campus during a sweep at 3am last night that came after days of psychological warfare from administrators and police, many of which were called in from outside the county. we’re a very isolated and small population up here in the redwoods and our student population is extremely poor with a huge percentage of students that don’t have a permanent place to live, especially after last year when a ton of students were displaced from campus after an administrative decision to clear upperclassmen from campus to make way for incoming students that never came. bails are being set at $10,000 for the students and faculty that were arrested!!!! cops here have a history of brutality and the president of the university is a sniveling little man who calls his students criminals and refuses to meet with or address them directly
#i havent been able to attend because to be arrested would be to lose my job my degree and pretty much everything ive been working for#for the past 4 years#but please spread this!! these students need our help

The Best News of Last Week - March 20, 2023
🌱 - Okra to the Rescue and Other News You Can't 'Lettuce' Miss This Week
1. 4 day work week being pushed in Congress
Progressive Democrats, led by Rep. Mark Takano of California, are pushing for a four-day workweek to give Americans more time for leisure outside of work. The proposed Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to require overtime pay for any employee working more than 32 hours in a week at a rate of time and a half.
More than 70 British companies have started to test a four-day workweek, and halfway through the six-month trial, most respondents reported there has been no loss in productivity.
2. Governor Walz signs universal school meals bill into Minnesota law
Minnesota just became the fourth state in the US to provide breakfasts and lunches at no charge to students at participating schools! The bill was signed into law by Governor Tim Walz on Friday, and it's set to ease the burden on parents who struggle to provide meals for their children.
The new legislation will cover the cost of meals for all students, regardless of household income. This means that families who don't qualify for free and reduced meals but who struggle to pay for food will also be covered. The bill is also meant to prevent "lunch shaming" practices, where children are denied food or given substitutes that indicate their family is struggling financially.
3. Texas Researchers Use Okra to Remove Microplastics from Wastewater
Researchers from Tarleton State University in Fort Worth, Texas discovered that food-grade plant extracts from okra have the power to remove microplastics from wastewater. Polysaccharide extracts from plants like fenugreek, cactus, aloe vera, tamarind, and okra were found to be effective non-toxic flocculant alternatives to remove microplastics from water.
Polysaccharides from okra and fenugreek were best for removing microplastics from ocean water, while a combination of okra and tamarind worked best for freshwater. Furthermore, plant-based flocculants can be easily implemented in existing water treatment facilities.
4. In the northern California snow, stranded cows are getting emergency hay drops
The recent wave of unprecedented snowfall in California has left cattle stranded and starving. When rancher Robert Puga ran out of hay, neighboring Humboldt County officials put together an emergency rescue operation called "Operation Hay Drop." State, federal, and local officials airdropped stranded cattle bales of hay to feed them.
Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal went to the Coast Guard with the idea of a helicopter rescue, and by midday Sunday, March 5, Operation Hay Drop was underway. So far, Operation Hay Drop has been a success, said rancher Puga. The mission covers about 2,500 head of cattle over several miles.
5. Make-A-Wish Foundation no longer considers Cystic Fibrosis to be automatically qualifying due to improvements in life outcomes for patients
Given the ongoing life-changing advances in cystic fibrosis, beginning in January 2024, cystic fibrosis will no longer automatically qualify for a wish.
6. 1st woman given stem cell transplant to cure HIV is still virus-free 5 years later
In 2017, a woman known as the "New York patient" underwent a stem cell transplant to treat both her cancer and HIV. Now, about 30 months later, she has been virus-free and off her HIV medication, leading some researchers to suggest that she may have been cured of HIV.
The New York patient, received stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood that also had the HIV-resistance genes. However, it's important to note that there is no official distinction between being cured and being in long-term remission, and the medical team is waiting for longer-term follow-up before making any definitive statements.
7. Cheetahs Back in Wild in India After Seven Decades
Namibian cheetahs have been successfully reintroduced to India after the world's fastest land animal was declared extinct in the South Asian country more than 70 years ago. Two cheetahs, Obaan and Asha, were released into the wild of Kuno National Park after being brought to India last September.
The species is being reintroduced on an experimental basis as part of a major prestige project for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India aims to bring in about 100 of the big cats over the next decade. The African cheetah is a different subspecies from the extinct Asiatic cheetah, which once roamed the sub-continent in great numbers.
Lastly, I recently opened a Youtube channel. Subscribe for a weekly compilation of feel good videos.

happy to report that the student protests have spread to both ireland and to the universities here in berlin. the cops in berlin are, of course, citing "incitement to hatred" as they drag students out of the peaceful sit-in at humboldt university, because the state of berlin continues to be operating under this farcical bullshit where they run an authoritarian crackdown in the name of ~tolerance~
#they've barricaded the book of kells#which is like the one big tourist attraction at tcd#fucking power move right there

What happened to Christine Walters?
Christine Walters, a 23 year old botany and ethnobotany student at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, set out for a trip to Portland, Oregon to visit a friend during the summer of 2008. She wouldn’t return home to Wisconsin, and in fact, would never be found. Christine, along with 4 other missing women that have been labeled “The Humboldt Five,” would vanish in California’s Emerald Triangle: an area in the northern part of the state famous for growing marijuana.
What was originally supposed to be a two week trip to Oregon turned into a more permanent move for Christine, who decided to take a leave from her studies at the University of Wisconsin and remain on the west coast. She moved to Humboldt County, CA in September 2008. There is very little information about Christine’s life in California; however, her mother and other friends and family in Wisconsin reported that her calls became less frequent, and being without consistent work, she would often ask for money. Her mother reported a series of concerning phone calls in the months leading up to her disappearance, and her requests to return home to Wisconsin were returned with “I’m not ready yet.”
Christine had a genuine love and admiration for the natural world and California’s landscape. Having taught yoga and Pilates in Wisconsin, Christine’s passion for the environment and living naturally would also bring her to the Green Life Evolution Center. Now defunct, the center was known for its environmentalism and promotion of living a natural, vegan life. On November 7th, Christine would attend a “tea ceremony” or “cleansing ceremony” sponsored by the Center. A private investigator later hired by the family learned that Christine and others at the ceremony had ingested ayahuasca, a South American psychoactive. Known for its potential to invite "spiritual revelations," negative physical side effects can include nausea, tremors, and vomiting.
Four days later, on November 11th, Christine appears naked and disoriented on a couple’s porch in rural Arcata, CA. While Christine has scratches all over her body and is severely dehydrated, she also appears extremely paranoid and confused. From this point forward, eyewitness accounts remark on Christine’s unusual behavior. Unfortunately, it is unclear if Christine’s paranoia began directly following the tea ceremony, or had been developing over several weeks or months.
The couple calls the police and Christine is taken to a nearby hospital where she becomes evasive and refuses to answer questions about her injuries. Instead, she reports that she has “walked a long way” and that “demons … were trying to get her.” She is released and taken to the Red Lion Inn, where she calls her mother several times and repeats the same concerns about being followed.
On November 14th, Christine is seen for the last time while visiting a copy center. Having lost her ID, her mother faxes relevant documents to the copy center for Christine. It’s her mother’s hope that she will be able to book a flight home once she has acquired a new ID. It’s also reported by some sources that her father wires her $1,000.00 at this point, which remains untouched in her bank account. At the copy center, Christine appears disheveled and acts paranoid; she repeatedly looks over her shoulders, and asks for directions to a DMV approximately one mile from the copy center. She is never seen nor heard from again, and is reported missing by her family on November 17th, 2008.
Later, Christine’s missing backpack – with her identification and cash – is located at Green Life Evolution.
If you know anything about the disappearance of Christine Walters, please contact the Eureka Police Department at (707) 441-4060 or the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office at (707) 445-7251.
