HMS Excellent, 108 Guns, 1834–1835 (Art UK). The former first-rate line of battle ship served as a gunnery training school for decades of Royal Navy midshipmen.

Like his eighteenth-century counterpart, the early Victorian naval instructor does not seem to have featured prominently in the histories of the period, although he occasionally appears in biographies and memoirs and is invariably remembered with affection. Commodore J G Goodenough was taught by Naval Instructor William Johnstone, 'a man of cultivation and ability who possessed the rare talent of not only teaching well but of inspiring his pupils with interest in and liking for their studies'. Admiral John Moresby related brief details of his studies on board the gunnery ship HMS Excellent in 1849 where, 'under the poop was the mathematical study for all officers and here a menagerie of diverse pupils confronted dear old Stark, our Scottish instructor'. He also served in HMS Caledonia under the tuition of 'the most lovable of naval instructors' Michael Rainback, a man much admired and teased by his pupils and 'who might have served Dickens for the original of Mr Pickwick'.

Okay the reason I’m so intrigued by Rhaenyra and Alicent’s relationship and the love they have is because it almost has to exist solely within the subtext. Make no mistake, it is there. The tension it causes is, dare I say, what makes the entire show. But it is implicit for the most part because of course it is! In what world would either of them be able to fully confront what they have meant to each other? What they have continued to mean to each other despite everything? What would you have Rhaenyra say? “You have betrayed me in a way that has ruined me, but of course I can still voice how deeply I love and care for you without so much as a stutter” ? And Alicent, “This resentment I hold for you has bore itself so deeply it has made me a stranger even to myself, but even now my soul yearns for you” ? No. Of course they cannot say this. Yet it is still felt.

We feel it when Alicent refuses to accept the idea of killing Rhaenyra in front of the entire council. We feel it when she sends her ravens, and when we learn that she has kept the torn page from when they were girls. We feel it when Rhaenyra sneaks into KL to speak alone with Alicent. The tears that fall when Rhaenyra receives the torn page. It’s all there, yet it almost defies words.

It reminds me so much of how the relationship dynamic between Silver and Flint was handled on Black Sails. One of the writers for Black Sails, Jonathan E. Steinberg, said it best: “I think the moment you make them text, that’s the cop-out. Like, the cop-out is making it seem like it would be easy for him to address this. [...] We had to embrace the fact that there would have to be things that were left unsaid and were going to have to exist in subtext and performance and context in order for it to be honest. That felt right. There is, at least to me when I watch it, a significant amount happening between the two of them that is all under the surface. We relied on the audience a lot to fill in those blanks.”

for those who are slightly confused, this is for 'my' modern human au! well. modern-ish!

okay so when they were in freshman year / 9th grade, Barnaby and Wally are soldily Bonded. they are a set, do not separate. they receive a lot of shit for this, because some kids are assholes and that's especially true for 14yr olds. and it's 2006. so Wally and Barnaby get teased/bullied a lot for their closeness. at this point they're kind of used to it. they met early in 7th grade and have been inseparable ever since. most of it slides off of them

but what is Barnaby was having an especially stressful week? one of those weeks were everything is going wrong, nothing is working out. so Barn is at the end of his rope, and then one of the main kids who likes to bother them insults Wally specifically, and badly. like it's some next level So Bad Its Almost Impressive shit. at present Barnaby is walking to his next class with Wally and Poppy. so Barnaby just kind of stops in place, mentally chooses violence, turns, walks up to the kid, and punches him as hard as he can. it knocked the bully out instantly and broke his jaw.

and keep in mind that at this point in time, Barnaby isn't the big strong guy he is later on. he hasn't had his main growth spurt yet. and he still packed enough of a punch to do Damage - which makes him even more intimidating when he Does hit his growth spurt and towers over practically everyone

the pros of this event: Frank and Julie were watching, and Frank respected Barnaby's response so much that he allowed Julie to bring him to hang out with the growing friend group at lunch / asshole kids were less inclined to insult Wally and Barnaby (or his friends) to their faces

cons: Eddie was also watching and was too scared of Barnaby for the rest of their school career to try and talk to him or his friends / Barnaby nearly got expelled but did get suspended, and that's a permanent mark on his record

so the kid goes down, everyone freaks out. Barnaby is still too angry to feel anything other than pissed off vindication. naturally higher Authorities (teachers) come to get the unconscious student to the (i almost said vet) nurse's office, and to bring Barnaby to the principle's office. they call Ms. Beagle and have her come pick him up. Wally has stuck like glue to Barnaby pretty much the whole time, except for when Barnaby was in the office to get chewed out / interrogated. when Ms. Beagle is done w/ her conversation with the principle, she takes Barnaby and Wally home.

there, Barnaby is still worked up, and as "punishment" Ms. Beagle has him do some menial tasks alongside his usual after school chores. Wally tags along, of course, and asks why the hell Barnaby did that. in a nicer Wally way of asking. this is what breaks the camels back. Barnaby just sits down and starts crying, to which Wally is like "oh no. oh fuck. what do i do." cue a solid minute of him just standing and staring in panic before awkwardly sitting next to Barnaby in solidarity.

when they go inside, Ms. Beagle already has Barnaby's favorite dinner whipped up and ready. She gives him a talk where she's essentially says "blah blah blah violence isn't the answer. however, good job for standing up to that kid. he's an asshole and deserved a good wallop." (listen im a firm believer in ms beagle having been a Wild Youth that would have thrown bricks at cops). Moods are lightened, they have a good dinner. The next day or so they need to go have a meeting with the Injured Kid's parents. that's when they find out Barnaby fully broke the kids jaw (he feels a little bad for that) and that the parents are pushing for his expulsion and also juvie. Ms. Beagle manages to whittle down the sentence to a long suspension and then detention for the rest of the year, as well as her paying the kid's hospital bill.

tl;dr Barnaby punches a kid for insulting Wally, gets a new friend out of it, nearly gets expelled, and gains a mostly unfounded Reputation that dissuades most from outright messing with him or his pals

I've started my internship very recently and everytime I go, I have an irrational paranoia that everyone hates me and that they think that I'm incompetent. There's no proof to that being true, but it makes me anxious anyways. Any advice?

create an imaginary friend. pretend that everything your coworkers could possibly hate you for is actually something that your friend is causing, and you're just covering for her. a mistake was made in a report somewhere? she actually made ten mistakes and you caught nine of them. you had to take a long bathroom break and think people might be judging you? she was throwing up and you were tenderly holding back her hair. maybe she's trying her best and you're just protecting her, or maybe she's making your life difficult on purpose and you're busy putting out her fires as fast as she can set them. maybe she's a gremlin who would delete every cell in this goddamn spreadsheet if you weren't here to stop her. that's up to you. the point is that you have a SECRET and you're UNDERCOVER and you are angelically bearing the weight of hypothetical coworker side-eye in service of your GREATER, MORE NOBLE GOAL. none of these losers have any idea how important you are. you are the glue holding this place together.

Not that it's any of your business- He lied. He'd been lying to me for years, apparently, all while pretending to care about and support me. It was always "Whatever makes you happy!" and "I'm happy if my siblings are happy!" and all of it meant nothing, because he was lying to me the entire time! I had to find out he had brain damage from Gramps! He couldn't even have the courage to tell me himself, and he doesn't ever try on anything! His grades are awful, he barely passes - he's lazy, just like his stupid Dragon Tamer friend! He probably only got in on pity, and I'm making sure he knows that! He barely has any hobbies, he never does anything for himself - it's like he never wants to even try to be anything! And then there was everything with the Ogre - and of course he would know, the only class he ever seemed to put effort in was history, he worked with Gramps - he was Gramps' apprentice, and since he was already keeping secrets, what's one more secret?! One more secret, one more lie, despite knowing how much the Ogre meant to me! I thought he was better than Carmine, but he's been treating me like some stupid little kid behind my back, too! I hate him, I hate all of them!

i'm going to be honest i don't think any rpg where you create your character should have a voiced protagonist. games like rdr2 or the witcher are fine, those are set characters you're playing, it makes sense they'd have only a few set responses. but if it's a game where you completely customize your character then a voiced protagonist just takes away an element of choice from the player. it gives you limited dialogue options, and it means the dialogue tree is unhelpful and simplified to the extent that you don't know what you're talking about when you click the options at hand. yes this counts for dragon age and mass effect too.
